The X-Files 2x19

1. This is mutiny!

2. No, sir. It's survival.

3. They'll come for us!

4. They're sending help.

5. They're sending help.

6. By the time they get here, it'll be too late.

7. It may already be too late.

8. Don't do this.

9. That's an order!

10. Lieutenant Harper?

11. Shoot me if you want, Captain Barclay,

12. but I'm not waiting around

13. so I can wind up like the others.

14. Cast off!

15. Hit me.

16. It looks like she's just drifting out there.

17. Mm. We're heading straight for her.

18. This is the Lisette,

19. Canadian fishing vessel C-V-2-3-3.

20. Please identify.

21. This is the Lisette.

22. Come in, please.

23. Cut the engines and meet me up on deck.

24. Hello up there!

25. Hey!

26. We're throwing you a line!

27. We're throwing you a line!

28. Grab it and we'll pull you in!

29. Is everybody all right?

30. Is everybody all right?

31. Are there any injured...?

32. Scully, thanks for coming.

33. What was so urgent that you couldn't tell me over the phone?

34. I didn't want to waste any time.

35. A Navy destroyer escort,

36. the USS Ardent, has been missing

37. in the North Atlantic for past 42 hours. Missing?

38. Yeah, there has been no radio contact,

39. no distress signals picked up.

40. Search planes and satellites

41. haven't picked up anything either.

42. You're saying that a ship and its entire crew just vanished?

43. You're saying that a ship and its entire crew just vanished?

44. Well, that's what it looked like, until last night.

45. A Canadian trawler picked up 18 survivors.

46. Well, they must have reported what happened.

47. Only one of those survivors is still alive.

48. He's been taken into the ICU under heavy security.

49. What is wrong with him?

50. That's what I was hoping you could tell me.

51. They won't let me in to see him,

52. but because of your medical background,

53. I was able to get you a clearance code.

54. I want your opinion on this.

55. His name is Harper. Lieutenant Richard Harper.

56. But, Mulder...

57. Meet me back at my office when you're finished.

58. Thank you.

59. Thank you.

60. Excuse me, is this Lieutenant Richard Harper?

61. That's what his wristband says.

62. And he's been positively identified?

63. All military personnel are fingerprinted.

64. Those records were cross-checked at the time of admittance.

65. Then I think there's been some kind of a mistake here.

66. Then I think there's been some kind of a mistake here.

67. According to this report,

68. Lieutenant Harper is 28 years old.

69. Why hasn't a systemic workup

70. been ordered on this patient?

71. I wasn't aware that my diagnostic decisions

72. required your approval.

73. I'm the physician in charge of this patient.

74. Let me see your clearance.

75. Can you tell me what's going on here?

76. How can you explain what happened to this man?

77. This clearance code is invalid.

78. Where'd you get this?

79. Who are you?

80. I'm a medical doctor,

81. I'm a medical doctor,

82. and I would like to see the autopsy reports

83. on the remaining victims.

84. I haven't got time for this.

85. Give me my patient's chart and leave

86. before I have you removed.

87. Something very strange is going on here, Mulder.

88. Did they let you in to see Lieutenant Harper?

89. Yeah, I saw somebody,

90. but whether it was actually the lieutenant...

91. What do you mean?

92. He looked about 90 years old—

93. off by about half a century.

94. off by about half a century.

95. You don't seem too surprised.

96. I want to show you something, Scully.

97. This was the course of the USS Ardent

98. when she disappeared.

99. Now, I've been tracking the points

100. of departure and destination for each of these X Files.

101. On December 12, 1949,

102. a Royal Navy battleship disappeared

103. between Leeds and Cape Perry.

104. The sea was calm, the weather sunny.

105. In 1963, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis,

106. a fleet of Soviet mine sweepers

107. left from here for Havana.

108. All six vessels vanished without a trace.

109. All in all, I've counted nine unexplained disappearances.

110. All in all, I've counted nine unexplained disappearances.

111. Each of them passed through here— the 65th parallel.

112. Another Bermuda Triangle?

113. It's more like a wrinkle in time,

114. if Lieutenant Harper is any indication.

115. Wrinkle in time? What...?

116. Do you know anything

117. about the Philadelphia Experiment?

118. It was a program during World War Two

119. to render battleships invisible to radar.

120. But then the Manhattan Project heated up,

121. and it was discontinued,

122. and most of the scientists were relocated to Los Alamos.

123. Except none of those scientists ever made it to Los Alamos.

124. Where were they sent?

125. Where were they sent?

126. Roswell, New Mexico.

127. Are you suggesting that the Philadelphia Experiment

128. used alien technology?

129. Less than nine months

130. after the alleged crash of a UFO

131. in Roswell, New Mexico, the USS Eldridge

132. did more than just hide from radar screens,

133. it disappeared altogether from the Philadelphia Navy Yard,

134. only to reappear minutes later

135. hundreds of miles away in Norfolk, Virginia.

136. That's not possible, Mulder,

137. not without defying all laws of time and space.

138. Those physicists may have been trying

139. to manipulate wormholes on Earth.

140. Wormholes?

141. Wormholes?

142. Actual portals where matter interfaces with time

143. at a relatively decelerated or accelerated rate.

144. I'm betting the military

145. never stopped the work it began 50 years ago.

146. And that's what you think happened to Lieutenant Harper?

147. I'll find out soon enough.

148. I'm booked on an 8:30 flight to Norway.

149. Have you let Skinner in on this?

150. I'm giving myself a 24-hour head start

151. before I give Skinner my report.

152. I want this one myself.

153. I'm going with you.

154. If that really was Lieutenant Harper,

155. I want to know what happened to him.

156. I want to know what happened to him.

157. Oh for five.

158. What is it, Mulder?

159. Why are they so afraid?

160. My father spent the better part

161. of his life at sea.

162. He had a healthy respect for the ocean,

163. but he never feared it.

164. I see fear in these men's eyes.

165. Brooklyn couldn't have taken you up there anyway.

166. Brooklyn couldn't have taken you up there anyway.

167. Your ship has to be classified ice class

168. before you can even go past the Lofoten Basin.

169. My name is Trondheim. Henry Trondheim.

170. The ship you want is the Zehar.

171. It's a 50-ton trawler with a double hull.

172. It's my ship.

173. You're American.

174. I was born and raised in Pensacola.

175. I ran a charter business there.

176. I got fed up with tourists.

177. How do you feel about the sea north of Beerenberg?

178. How do you feel about the sea north of Beerenberg?

179. This time of year, it would be ten hours minimum each way.

180. So you've been there.

181. A few times. Few times.

182. Got some of my best hauls out of there.

183. Why is everyone else so afraid to go there?

184. Well, legends.

185. They grew up on stories.

186. What stories?

187. A huge stone

188. came out of the sky, crashed into the pack ice.

189. A meteorite.

190. An evil god.

191. They worship it

192. by staying away.

193. So... exactly what is it

194. that you're looking for up there?

195. A number of things.

196. How good are you?

197. About as good as you're going to get,

198. considering no one else will take you there.

199. When can we leave?

200. As soon as we shake

201. on a price.

202. Feeling any better?

203. Oh... you're lucky you inherited your father's legs.

204. What?

205. His sea legs.

206. It's been about 12 hours.

207. You said it was only going to take ten.

208. You said it was only going to take ten.

209. What's going on?

210. I told you before, the visibility is lousy.

211. I've never seen it this thick.

212. How much longer till we get there?

213. Well, we're right where you want to be.

214. I even think we've got what you're looking for.

215. Except one minute it's right in front of us,

216. and the next minute it's not.

217. Like something's messing

218. with my radar.

219. And my navigation system.

220. I can't explain it...

221. Captain! (shouts in Norwegian)

222. We're going to hit!

223. Officer, check the hull for damage.

224. I don't get it.

225. This is what you're looking for?

226. It's the USS Ardent.

227. It's the USS Ardent.

228. It's a destroyer escort.

229. All right.

230. What do you want with it anyway?

231. It's a ghost ship.

232. I mean, look at all this corrosion.

233. No one's been aboard this vessel in 20, 30 years.

234. Scully.

235. Let's check the crew quarters first.

236. Let's check the crew quarters first.

237. Mulder.

238. They almost look mummified.

239. Like they've been dead a very long time.

240. Except for this strange residue.

241. What was that?

242. An engine.

243. My ship.

244. No! That's my ship!

245. Hey!

246. Taking my ship!

247. Hey!

248. Hey!

249. That's my ship!

250. No.

251. All right.

252. Try it again.

253. No.

254. What is it?

255. It's caked with the same residue that's covering everything.

256. So we can't even send a distress signal.

257. The engine's so corroded down there,

258. The engine's so corroded down there,

259. you can't even... can't even tell what it is.

260. I've never seen anything like it.

261. Halvorsen's trying to salvage some parts,

262. but basically what we are is dead in the water.

263. Well, the radio's dead, too.

264. Somebody's not telling me what's going on here.

265. Now, look, that ship was not just my livelihood.

266. That was my life.

267. I have a right to some straight answers.

268. What we're seeing here may be the result

269. of some kind of military experiment.

270. of some kind of military experiment.

271. Military experiment?

272. An artificial time band where matter moves

273. through time at an accelerated rate.

274. Tell me in English.

275. Time may be speeding up.

276. Right. That's almost as crazy

277. as Halvorsen's "There's a rock that comes down from the sky..."

278. This ship... this ship was launched in 1991.

279. I don't know how else to explain the extent of the corrosion

280. or the decay of the bodies down below.

281. You're not buying any of this, are you?

282. Oh, God.

283. What happened?

284. His skull's been fractured.

285. Who's that?

286. Halvorsen.

287. Who are you?

288. Captain Barclay,

289. commanding officer, USS Ardent.

290. commanding officer, USS Ardent.

291. Here you go.

292. Captain Barclay, um, according to your log,

293. shortly after the navigation system failed,

294. several of your crew members

295. saw something in the sea— a growing light.

296. It came up through the fog

297. in the middle of the night

298. in the middle of the night

299. like it was on fire.

300. Do you have any idea what it might have been?

301. Power loss.

302. Everything stopped.

303. Everything.

304. Even the sea.

305. Even the wind.

306. Then the ship— my ship—

307. she began to bleed from the hull

308. near the rivet seams.

309. He's a drunkard.

310. He's a drunkard!

311. He's a drunkard!

312. And he killed Halvorsen.

313. To hell with him.

314. I don't have to listen to his lies.

315. I'm no liar.

316. It happened—

317. first to some of my men, then to all of them.

318. What happened?

319. Time got lost.

320. It's okay, Captain. You can take it easy.

321. We're going to do whatever we can to help you out.

322. We're going to do whatever we can to help you out.

323. What can you do?

324. You can't do anything.

325. I'm 35 years old.

326. There's no way he killed Halvorsen.

327. Yeah. I'd have to agree with you.

328. The blow that killed Halvorsen

329. was delivered with considerable strength,

330. and he can't even hold a glass with two hands.

331. Yeah. That means

332. Yeah. That means

333. there's somebody else on board.

334. You were a good first mate.

335. You left me alone and you did your job.

336. It's a shame this had to happen to you so young.

337. Put it down!

338. Put down the pipe!

339. Put it down.

340. I could kill you for what you've done!

341. I could kill you for what you've done!

342. Back off, Trondheim! He killed Halvorsen!

343. He may be our only chance to figure out what happened.

344. Look at him. Look at him— he hasn't aged.

345. Now back off.

346. His name's Olafsson.

347. You know him?

348. Everybody in Gildeskal knows him.

349. He's a pirate whaler.

350. He's a wanted criminal.

351. He supplies whales to the Japanese black market—

352. blues, belugas, sperm.

353. Ask him how he got here.

354. All right, I need a translator for that.

355. We'll question him later.

356. I don't want to leave Scully alone,

357. in case there are others.

358. I think we found who killed Halvorsen.

359. He'd have killed me, too, if it wasn't for Mulder.

360. The ship's log said something about four Norwegian sailors

361. who were picked up when their vessel had sunk.

362. I guarantee it was Olafsson's men.

363. Took my boat, and left him stranded there.

364. It's just like these dogs to slit each other's throats.

365. It's just like these dogs to slit each other's throats.

366. Maybe we should ask the captain some more questions.

367. Mulder, Captain Barclay's dead.

368. I don't know how it happened.

369. It was just in the last 15 minutes.

370. It's just like those men below.

371. It's more than rapid aging, Mulder.

372. It's almost as if he's turning into a pillar of salt.

373. Is that what this substance is?

374. Well, it appears to be crystalline,

375. but beyond that...

376. All right. We're all tired.

377. All right. We're all tired.

378. Let's stow the captain's body, tie up Olafsson,

379. so we can all get some rest.

380. I'll take first watch, in case he's not alone.

381. Scully.

382. Hmm?

383. I just fell asleep.

384. You want a few more minutes?

385. No, I'm up.

386. Scully...

387. Mulder, what happened to you?

388. Time acceleration is an equation, Mulder, a theory.

389. Then theoretically it's possible.

390. What else could it be?

391. Well, whatever it is, it isn't a time warp.

392. None of us has directly observed

393. any of the phenomena recorded in the ship's log.

394. There is no hard evidence to indicate

395. that this is a time warp.

396. We're the evidence, Scully.

397. Look at us. We're aging by the minute.

398. Well, if this is rapid-aging phenomena,

399. then why hasn't our hair grayed or started to fall out?

400. Then what about him?

401. Huh?

402. What about him?

403. Why isn't he getting old?

404. Why isn't he getting old?

405. Relax.

406. Relax, Trondheim.

407. Save your energy.

408. I don't have to listen to you.

409. It's because of you that we got into this.

410. Nobody twisted your arm.

411. I signed on to bring you here, not to die.

412. Mulder, what do you know about free radicals?

413. Is this a quiz?

414. They're highly reactive chemicals

415. containing extra electrons.

416. Now, they can attack DNA proteins

417. Now, they can attack DNA proteins

418. that can cause our body tissue and cell membranes to oxidize.

419. Grow old, you mean?

420. It's the prevailing theory on how our bodies age.

421. So you think something

422. is triggering that reaction in us?

423. Well, this is just a theory,

424. but what if this ship is drifting towards

425. another massive metallic source like a meteor?

426. Maybe it's way down deep in the ocean

427. or imbedded into an iceberg.

428. But the two could effectively be acting

429. as positive and negative terminals,

430. with the ocean itself being a kind of giant battery.

431. with the ocean itself being a kind of giant battery.

432. That level of electromagnetic energy could be

433. exciting the free radicals and effectively oxidizing

434. every piece of matter in its field.

435. It makes sense, Scully.

436. The organic equivalent to rust would be rapid

437. premature senescence.

438. What the hell?

439. Captain Barclay said the ship was bleeding.

440. Captain Barclay said the ship was bleeding.

441. It's not blood, Scully.

442. It's rust.

443. Trondheim, keep an eye on Olafsson.

444. Where are you going?

445. Mulder, where are we going?

446. I'm not sure yet,

447. but we don't have much time to get there.

448. See this yellow pipe?

449. It's the only one that hasn't corroded through.

450. Olafsson and his men.

451. Why would they hole up here?

452. This is the only drinkable water on the ship.

453. We were both wrong, Scully.

454. It's the water.

455. All the other water has been contaminated.

456. Contaminated how?

457. Something must have got into the desalination tanks

458. where all the ship's potable water is stored.

459. But the water in the sewage system

460. is recycled again and again.

461. It's doesn't come from the sea.

462. Well, if you're right,

463. Well, if you're right,

464. then Captain Barclay's drinking binge

465. is what kept him alive.

466. The water from this tank may do the same for us.

467. It doesn't sound like there's very much left.

468. What happened?

469. You were supposed to watch him.

470. I feel pretty bad about it.

471. I shouldn't have dozed off.

472. Wh-What do you want me to say?

473. He's gone. He got away.

474. I want to know what happened!

475. I could ask the same of you; you were the one that tied him up.

476. There's nothing wrong with my knot!

477. This rope's been severed.

478. I don't like being interrogated.

479. I don't owe you any explanations.

480. Trondheim!

481. Let go of me.

482. Look, we have a lot of work to do here.

483. I'm going to need blood and urine samples

484. from both of you.

485. What for?

486. We found out what caused the aging.

487. What is it now?

488. The two of you are full of theories.

489. First it's one thing, then it's another.

490. By the time you figure out what it is, we'll all be dead.

491. It's the water, Trondheim.

492. Something got into the de-sal tanks,

493. but the water in the sewage system is untainted.

494. It kept Olafsson alive this long.

495. Maybe it'll slow the process in us.

496. This is good news, isn't it?

497. This is good news, isn't it?

498. So, what happens now?

499. It has been 18 hours, 45 minutes

500. since the onset of symptoms.

501. Rudimentary blood tests have revealed

502. impossibly high concentrations of sodium chloride— salt.

503. Though the contaminated water itself is not saline,

504. it appears to catalyze existing body fluids,

505. causing massive and rapid cellular damage.

506. causing massive and rapid cellular damage.

507. The untainted water has slowed the degenerative progression

508. in Trondheim and me, but Mulder has fared less well,

509. perhaps because of the dehydration he suffered

510. on the way here.

511. I think I just lapped George Burns.

512. I'll be right back.

513. If you've got something to say, say it,

514. but don't hover behind me like that.

515. The water isn't helping him.

516. Then maybe we should double his ration.

517. What for?

518. A lake full of water isn't going to bring him back.

519. We don't know that for sure.

520. Not yet.

521. Look at him.

522. We've wasted too much water on him as it is.

523. Who are you to decide?

524. You don't have to be a doctor to see that...

525. he isn't going to make it.

526. But you and me, Scully...

527. you and me, we better start looking out for ourselves.

528. Mulder's urinalysis continues to indicate

529. his kidneys' failure to excrete the substance

530. I am calling "heavy salt."

531. Whether the untainted water taken from the sewage system

532. Whether the untainted water taken from the sewage system

533. is even helping him at all is unclear.

534. What does remain clear to me is that I can't give up trying.

535. Trondheim.

536. What are you doing?

537. Listen to this.

538. You know what that is?

539. It's a funeral bell.

540. There's only a few gallons left, maybe less.

541. There's enough to keep us all alive

542. for a few more days.

543. Or one of us alive

544. long enough to be rescued.

545. Don't come any closer.

546. What are you going to do, shoot me?

547. What are you going to do, shoot me?

548. Trondheim...

549. listen to me.

550. The Navy knows where we are.

551. They know these coordinates,

552. and they're going to be here soon.

553. So why don't we just go back up into the mess hall...

554. Why don't you just go ahead and shoot me

555. if you think

556. that I'm going to let Mulder have another drop!
