The X-Files 2x16

1. I have lived with a fragile faith

2. built on the ether of vague memories from an experience

3. that I could neither prove nor explain.

4. When I was 12, my sister was taken from me,

5. taken from our home by a force

6. that I came to believe was extraterrestrial.

7. This belief sustained me, fueling a quest for truths

8. that were as elusive as the memory itself.

9. To believe as passionately as I did

10. was not without sacrifice, but I always accepted the risks—

11. was not without sacrifice, but I always accepted the risks—

12. to my career, my reputation, my relationships,

13. to life itself.

14. We need a frostbite bay stat!

15. Let's get ready, please!

16. Basal temp's 86 degrees.

17. Right eye dilated.

18. Left eye dilated.

19. All right, people, let's get him into that tub

20. All right, people, let's get him into that tub

21. or we're going to lose him.

22. On three. One, two, three.

23. Hold it.

24. An Agent Mulder was brought here tonight?

25. This is an authorized area— military personnel only.

26. I'm a federal agent. Ma'am...

27. Hold on, you're not going anywhere

28. until we can see some I.D.

29. There is no time for this. A man is dying.

30. What happened to me out on the ice

31. has justified every belief.

32. If I should die now, it will be with a certainty

33. that my faith has been righteous.

34. And if through death, larger mysteries are revealed,

35. And if through death, larger mysteries are revealed,

36. I will have already learned the answer to the question

37. that has driven me here— that there is intelligent life

38. in the universe other than our own,

39. that they are here among us,

40. and that they have begun to colonize.

41. I'm Dana Scully.

42. I'm Agent Mulder's partner. What are his vitals?

43. He's suffering from extreme hypothermia.

44. No. You've got to get him out of the tub.

45. He's dying. He's lost all his body heat. You've got to listen to me!

46. If you keep him in there, you're going to kill him.

47. The cold is the only thing that's keeping him alive.

48. The cold is the only thing that's keeping him alive.

49. (monitor flatlines) His heart stopped.

50. Get me one amp of epinephrine and a cannula.

51. You got to see this, Captain.

52. We got a UFO or something buzzing us.

53. Right up here.

54. It's been just hovering up there for about 20 minutes.

55. Could be a helicopter.

56. Not the way it flew over us.

57. It's coming at us again.

58. It's going to crash.

59. It's going to crash.

60. Reverse engines!

61. We're going after it.

62. Two days ago,

63. the crew of an ice cutter working the Arctic Circle

64. thought they had seen a UFO

65. when a strange aircraft plunged into the Beaufort Sea.

66. But a short time later, they recovered

67. what is now believed to be a Russian fighter pilot

68. what is now believed to be a Russian fighter pilot

69. from the icy water, where he miraculously survived

70. the extreme arctic temperatures.

71. The man was airlifted to a military hospital in Alaska,

72. where he was listed in stable condition.

73. But while authorities have been trying to determine

74. just who the pilot is, we've learned

75. that he has apparently walked out of the hospital

76. and is now listed as missing.

77. Reporting from our...

78. Where is he?

79. I don't know.

80. Hey, I've been looking for you.

81. I was just down the street.

82. Someone fired more shots at the White House last night.

83. You got to wonder about a country

84. where even the president

85. has to worry about drive-by shootings.

86. What are you working on?

87. I found these in my e-mail this morning—

88. three obituaries.

89. three obituaries.

90. Sent by whom?

91. Nobody I know,

92. but obviously somebody that knows me.

93. Why?

94. The deceased are Dr. Landon Prince

95. of Scranton, Pennsylvania,

96. Dr. Dale Gayhart of New York City,

97. and Dr. Harvey Buchanon of Tea Neck, New Jersey.

98. All worked in abortion clinics.

99. They died in separate arson fires.

100. Sounds like the work of militant right-to-lifers.

101. Sounds like it.

102. Why would somebody send them to you?

103. It's taken me all morning to figure that out.

104. What'd you find?

105. This is the latest victim—

106. This is the latest victim—

107. Dr. Landon Prince.

108. And these are the other two victims— Drs. Gayhart...

109. Mm-hmm. and Buchanon.

110. Triplets? Nope.

111. I can't find any blood connection between them.

112. In fact, I can't find any records on them at all.

113. It's as if before they died, they never existed.

114. What?

115. Dr. Prince performed legal, clinical abortions—

116. which seems to be having its own share

117. of occupational hazards these days.

118. You don't know anything else about him?

119. You don't know anything else about him?

120. He went about his work quietly.

121. None of his family's come forward.

122. What about a man you arrested, this, uh, preacher?

123. Reverend Calvin Sistrunk. He's got a motive.

124. He's threatened these abortion docs before.

125. He was carrying this when we arrested him.

126. We're hoping for an indictment.

127. As soon as you locate Dr. Prince's remains.

128. Yes. But that fact

129. hasn't been released.

130. There have been two identical fire deaths.

131. Neither body has been found.

132. Neither body has been found.

133. We're quite certain he was in the building.

134. His car was in the parking lot.

135. We found his keys in the stairwell

136. where the fire was started.

137. He's been missing since the incident.

138. Could be we'll just be finding teeth and bone.

139. Good afternoon.

140. Reverend Sistrunk,

141. these are Agents Scully and Mulder.

142. They want to ask you...

143. If Dr. Prince burns in hell's fire

144. for his murder of the unborn?

145. If his damnation is God's will?

146. Is that what you think, Reverend?

147. Is that what you think, Reverend?

148. I guess it's a question of opinion.

149. Well, it's my opinion that whoever killed Dr. Prince

150. will also be linked to two other murders.

151. How do you feel about that?

152. There are those

153. who endorse the killing of the heathen sinner in God's name,

154. but I, sir, am not one of them.

155. Have you been to New York and New Jersey

156. in the past two weeks?

157. No, sir.

158. This clipping, where'd you get it?

159. From the newspaper.

160. Obviously, there are more

161. of God's soldiers seeking this man for judgment.

162. Which newspaper?

163. Which newspaper?

164. The local paper up in Binghamton.

165. Oh, yeah, I remember this one.

166. The man who placed this paid cash.

167. Would you recognize his face?

168. I might.

169. No. That's not him.

170. Do you have a record of his name or address?

171. No, we don't. He wouldn't sign anything.

172. In fact, he called and asked to place that ad a second week,

173. so we did, but he never came back to pay.

174. Thank you. Sure.

175. I got a bad feeling about this case, Mulder.

176. What do you mean?

177. Well, nothing about it makes sense.

178. We've got three deaths of identical victims,

179. We've got three deaths of identical victims,

180. no bodies, a virtual non-suspect.

181. Sounds just like an X File.

182. You don't even know who sent you that information.

183. We've been set up before.

184. If somebody really wanted to set us up,

185. would they give us this little to go on?

186. There's something bigger here, Scully.

187. I'd be willing to bet there are more of these guys out there.

188. More victims?

189. Unless we get to them first.

190. The deaths follow a pattern.

191. New Jersey, New York, Scranton,

192. and then an ad is placed here in Binghamton

193. looking for a man exactly like the others.

194. looking for a man exactly like the others.

195. The killer's moving in a northerly direction.

196. Uh, excuse me.

197. Excuse me.

198. The number in the ad, would that be a voice mail?

199. Yes, it is.

200. How-how would you access that?

201. Well, you'd start by paying the bill.

202. Dial the number, then press 1236.

203. There's 24 messages responding to the ad.

204. First caller has seen the man in the photo in Syracuse.

205. That's north.

206. Special Agent Weiss.

207. Yeah, this is Agent Mulder.

208. I need to enlist your help.

209. Shoot.

210. Heading your way with Agent Scully.

211. We have reason to believe

212. We have reason to believe

213. a man in your area may be in danger.

214. His name is Dr. Aaron Baker.

215. He's living somewhere in Syracuse.

216. We need you to find him and sit on him

217. until we can get there.

218. You got it. I'll call you back with an address

219. as soon as I track him down.

220. where we could share in the entire planet.

221. But you seem to be...

222. you seem to be unwilling to share.

223. Your plans will not succeed.

224. Federal agent! Drop your weapon!

225. I said drop it!

226. What the hell?

227. Agent Mulder.

228. Yes. Agent Weiss?

229. Yes, sir.

230. Did you find Dr. Baker?

231. No, I'm afraid not.

232. No one's home.

233. No one's home.

234. There's two weeks worth of mail in the mailbox.

235. We may already be too late,

236. but we should take a look around anyway.

237. Not much to see.

238. Agent Mulder has arrived.

239. Send him right in.

240. Agent Mulder, please have a seat.

241. I'm sorry I'm late. I just flew in.

242. From?

243. Syracuse. Where you were doing what?

244. Agent Scully and I were following up a lead on a case.

245. Did anyone authorize this investigation, Agent Mulder?

246. No, sir.

247. Do you have paperwork on this case?

248. No, sir.

249. I'd assumed we had an understanding

250. I'd assumed we had an understanding

251. with respect to the X Files.

252. I'm sure it doesn't surprise you, Agent Mulder,

253. that the people I have to answer to

254. aren't quite so understanding, particularly when

255. one of their field agents is found dead.

256. What?

257. Special Agent Barrett Weiss,

258. out of the Syracuse office.

259. His body was found stuffed

260. in the trunk of a car in front of a house

261. that you sent him to!

262. It's impossible.

263. I spoke to Agent Weiss.

264. I saw him at the house. Save it, Agent Mulder!

265. Save it for your report, because until this matter

266. is cleared up, your butt and mine are in a sling,

267. and your investigation— official or otherwise—

268. is terminated!

269. is terminated!

270. Sir... Don't underestimate

271. the seriousness of this matter, Agent Mulder.

272. A man is dead.

273. I want a full accounting on my desk in the morning.

274. Mulder.

275. Mulder, it's me.

276. Where are you?

277. I'm at home.

278. Agent Weiss is dead, Scully.

279. What?

280. Somebody killed him, and Skinner hit the roof.

281. We're being grounded until he gets a full accounting.

282. I just wish I knew what the hell was going on.

283. Have you checked your e-mail this morning, Mulder?

284. No. Why?

285. Because I received something unsettling,

286. Because I received something unsettling,

287. and I wondered if you'd gotten it, too.

288. What is it?

289. It's a digitally scanned photograph.

290. There's another one, Mulder.

291. His name is Dr. James Dickens.

292. And, Mulder...

293. Yeah? he's right here in Washington.

294. Stay where you are, Scully; I'll be right there to pick you up.

295. Agent Mulder?

296. My name is Ambrose Chapel.

297. I work for the Central Intelligence Agency.

298. I need to talk you

299. about the case you're working on.

300. What case is that?

301. The murder of certain identical victims.

302. I have a story to tell, Agent Mulder.

303. Believe me, you want to hear it.

304. Believe me, you want to hear it.

305. We've known of their existence for a decade.

306. We had no idea they were in the country until last year.

307. Who are they?

308. We're working on vague intelligence reports,

309. but it appears that early in the Cold War,

310. Soviet scientists stumbled onto genetic anomaly

311. in sets of identical twins.

312. They were able to isolate the specific DNA material

313. that gave the twins their facial features,

314. hair color, texture,

315. and they were able to reproduce it.

316. Are you saying these men are clones?

317. By all outward appearances.

318. By all outward appearances.

319. How did they get here?

320. The program went by the code name "Gregor"--

321. the name given to every clone.

322. We believe the original Gregor came here

323. sometime in the mid '70s on a German passport.

324. Using that same document, they were able

325. to bring a small cadre of clones into the country.

326. Several of which have obtained strategic positions

327. in the medical establishment.

328. For what purpose?

329. In the event of war, they would mobilize simultaneously

330. at different facilities across the U.S.

331. at different facilities across the U.S.

332. to contaminate blood supplies,

333. sabotage pharmaceutical factories,

334. essentially destroy the country's immune system.

335. If you've known about this for a year,

336. why hasn't anything been done?

337. Well, this is where the story

338. gets perhaps even more incredible.

339. In a secret agreement,

340. someone is allowing the Gregors to be

341. systematically eliminated

342. by a man who I believe is a Russian spy killer,

343. in exchange for

344. the absolute suppression of the program's existence

345. and to obtain the science that created it.

346. and to obtain the science that created it.

347. What's your business in this?

348. I believe we share similar sentiments

349. on our government's policies of denial,

350. which is why they've been trying to contact you.

351. Who?

352. The Gregors.

353. You've obviously got a reputation

354. as someone who might protect them and bring

355. these misdeeds to light.

356. What makes you think we've been contacted?

357. Your inquiries into their deaths.

358. And your response to the ad I placed.

359. We're talking state-sanctioned murder.

360. If we can find them first, maybe the truth can be known.

361. We know where one of these men may be.

362. Okay, let's go.

363. Who is it?

364. Agents Scully and Mulder.

365. We're with the FBI.

366. Dr. Dickens?

367. Yes.

368. I believe you've been trying to contact us.

369. Uh...

370. May we come in, Dr. Dickens?

371. Uh...

372. Uh...

373. It's okay, sir, there's nothing

374. to be afraid of.

375. I'll call the paramedics.

376. He's moving.

377. He's getting up.

378. I'll call you back.

379. I'll call you back.

380. You okay?

381. I'm okay. I just got the wind knocked out of me.

382. Don't lose him. Go.

383. Okay.

384. Are you all right?

385. He's gone.

386. Where?

387. He blindsided me.

388. Went up the fire escape before I could grab him.

389. I'm going to go see if I can find a way

390. up on the roof.

391. How are you feeling?

392. Like I should have used the crosswalk.

393. A lot better than my phone.

394. Maybe we should have dropped this case when you were told.

395. Scully, if what our friend from the CIA says is true,

396. this could blow the lid off one of the biggest

397. national security conspiracies ever.

398. Our friend from the CIA is about as unbelievable as his story,

399. as is everything about this case.

400. I mean, what ever happened to "Trust no one," Mulder?

401. Oh, I changed it to "Trust everyone."

402. Oh, I changed it to "Trust everyone."

403. I didn't tell you?

404. I ran a full background check on this guy.

405. Ambrose Chapel is a 17-year veteran,

406. special intelligence clearance.

407. He's the real thing, Scully.

408. Why would a man with his experience need our help?

409. And how could he let a man that he's been looking so hard for

410. slip away so easily?

411. You know, that doctor wasn't running away from us, Mulder.

412. He was running away from Agent Chapel.

413. I think you're being overly paranoid about him, Scully.

414. Paranoid? Have you stopped to consider

415. that maybe it was Agent Chapel

416. who killed that field agent in Syracuse?

417. who killed that field agent in Syracuse?

418. Is that what you want me to put on my report to Skinner?

419. Because I'd be more than happy to have you explain that to him.

420. Damn it, Mulder, that is not my job.

421. You'll pursue a case at the expense of everything

422. to the point of insanity

423. and expect me to follow you.

424. There has to be somewhere to draw the line.

425. Three identical men are dead.

426. A fourth identical man is alive and on the lam.

427. If the pursuit of this case seems like insanity to you,

428. feel free to step away from it.

429. An FBI agent died because of our pursuit of this case.

430. Those are the risks we take.

431. You either accept them, or you don't.

432. We all draw our own lines.

433. We all draw our own lines.

434. I have to show you something.

435. I got these a week ago.

436. I stepped in something last night

437. that ate clean through the sole.

438. Now, maybe I'm being paranoid, but it was in the exact spot

439. where this man Chapel said the doctor escaped.

440. Why don't you send it to our lab guys for analysis.

441. Why don't you send it to our lab guys for analysis.

442. And while you're at it, why don't you arrange for

443. an autopsy bay. An autopsy bay?

444. In putting together my report for Skinner,

445. I came across something I think you'll appreciate.

446. Whoever killed that field agent in Syracuse

447. was so clever, no clear cause of death can be established.

448. There's no penetrating knife or gunshot wounds,

449. no ligature marks or abrasions from strangulation.

450. The toxicological is clean, and the blood work—

451. well, the blood work is strange.

452. Strange how?

453. Strange how?

454. Well, there's evidence of polycythemia—

455. excessive production of red blood cells.

456. How excessive?

457. Extremely. The doctor who made this report

458. has it in here that the blood was curdled like jelly,

459. as if something caused the blood to thicken or clot

460. prior to death.

461. Due to what?

462. Possibly a coagulating agent

463. introduced into the body,

464. but it would have shown up in the toxicological.

465. Didn't Agent Chapel say something

466. about these doctors being able

467. to contaminate the blood supply?

468. Couldn't one of those contaminants

469. have been used to kill this man?

470. have been used to kill this man?

471. I don't know, Mulder. I...

472. There was a doctor's bag I took as evidence

473. from the apartment.

474. Agent Mulder? Yeah?

475. Assistant Director Skinner's been looking for you.

476. All right, I'll be right there.

477. Check the bag.

478. See if you can find anything that'll connect.

479. Skinner's going to want to know

480. why you didn't file your report.

481. What are you going to say?

482. Just the truth.

483. I got hit by a car.

484. I'm sorry this is so late.

485. I had trouble with the data from the autopsy...

486. That's not why I called you in here, Agent Mulder.

487. Uh... your father's been trying to reach you.

488. There's been a family emergency.

489. Thank you.

490. Hello?

491. Mom?

492. Mom?

493. Fox. Is that you?

494. Yeah. I-I didn't expect you to answer.

495. What are you doing at Dad's?

496. Is he all right?

497. Yes. Let me put him on.

498. Hello?

499. Dad?

500. I got a message there was a family emergency.

501. Yes. I received a very strange phone call this afternoon.

502. I called your mother.

503. We think it's important that you come up here

504. as soon as possible.

505. Can you tell me what this is about?

506. I'll know more when you get here.

507. I didn't find anything much to go on,

508. I didn't find anything much to go on,

509. but we've got an address.

510. Check it out. I'll call you as soon as I can.

511. Where you going? Home.

512. This is Fox Mulder.

513. Leave me a message, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

514. Mulder, it's me.

515. I need to talk to you immediately.

516. I've got some new information on this case.

517. Mulder, I think I'm in danger.

518. I'm in my apartment, and I think I've been followed.

519. Your mother needs some time.

520. You said it was an emergency.

521. She wanted you to come.

522. It's a difficult time.

523. I appreciate you coming on such short notice.

524. What is it, Dad?

525. The certainty...

526. becomes a comfort

527. that allows you to move on.

528. We bury our memories so deep

529. after all that has been destroyed,

530. never expecting...

531. Who is Mom talking to?

532. Your sister.

533. Fox.

534. Fox.

535. After all those sleepless nights,

536. now I can hardly keep my eyes open.

537. You're exhausted.

538. We all are.

539. It's after 5:30.

540. Oh, I just need a couple of hours.

541. Try and get some sleep.

542. Fox?

543. Yeah, Mom?

544. It is really her...

545. It is really her...

546. isn't it?

547. I...

548. I don't see who else it could be.

549. Go on. Go to sleep.

550. Is it too late for a game of Stratego?

551. It's 22 years too late.

552. I don't think Dad can think of anything to say.
