1. Hi, you've reached
the Usher residence.Copy !req
2. Please leave a message at the tone.
Thank you.Copy !req
3. Hi, honey. It's about 8.30
and, um... I'm going to be here for a while.Copy !req
4. The presentation didn't go so well.Copy !req
5. Call me. I love you. Bye.Copy !req
6. Aghh!Copy !req
7. Guess who I ran into
from our class at Quantico?Copy !req
8. - Marty Neil.
- J Edgar Jr?Copy !req
9. Just got bumped up.Copy !req
10. Foreign Counterintelligence,
New York City Bureau.Copy !req
11. Supervisory Special Agent.Copy !req
12. - Supervisory?
- That's right.Copy !req
13. Two years out of the Academy.
How did he land that?Copy !req
14. Lucked into the World Trade Center
bombing.Copy !req
15. Well, good for Marty.Copy !req
16. Oh, come on, Dana! The guy is a loser.
Look where he is now.Copy !req
17. It's where we should be.Copy !req
18. Brad Wilson told me
the psychological profile you wrote...Copy !req
19. .. on the Washington Crossing killer
led them straight to the suspect.Copy !req
20. Word has it you're on
the Violent Crimes Section's fast track.Copy !req
21. So, how are you doing?Copy !req
22. Have you had any close encounters
of the third kind?Copy !req
23. Is that what everyone thinks I do?Copy !req
24. No, of course not.
But you do work with Spooky Mulder.Copy !req
25. Mulder's ideas may be a bit out there,
but he is a great agent.Copy !req
26. Yeah, well, I've got this case
that's out there.Copy !req
27. Baltimore PD calls.Copy !req
28. They want our help on a serial killer profile.Copy !req
29. Three murders. Began six weeks ago.
Victims vary in age, race, gender.Copy !req
30. - No known connections.
- I take it there's a pattern?Copy !req
31. Point of entry.
Actually, the lack of one.Copy !req
32. What do you mean?Copy !req
33. One victim, college girl,
killed in her dorm room.Copy !req
34. She was found with the windows locked
and the door chained from the inside.Copy !req
35. The last incident, two days ago.
High-security office building.Copy !req
36. Nothing on the security monitors.
Janitor spoke to the victim minutes before.Copy !req
37. Didn't hear or see a thing
out of the ordinary.Copy !req
38. Suicides?Copy !req
39. Each victim was found
with their liver ripped out.Copy !req
40. - No cutting tool was used.
- Bare hands?Copy !req
41. - This looks like an X-File.
- Let's not get carried away.Copy !req
42. I'm gonna solve these murders, but...Copy !req
43. ..I would like you
to go over the case histories.Copy !req
44. Maybe come down to the crime scene.Copy !req
45. Do you want me to ask Mulder?Copy !req
46. OK. If he wants to come
and do you a favour, great!Copy !req
47. But make sure he knows this is my case.Copy !req
48. Dana, if I can break a case like this one,Copy !req
49. ..I'll be getting my bump up the ladder.Copy !req
50. And you...Copy !req
51. Maybe you won't have to be
Mrs Spooky any more.Copy !req
52. - So why didn't they ask me?
- They're friends from the Academy.Copy !req
53. I'm sure they just felt
more comfortable talking to me.Copy !req
54. Why would I make them so uncomfortable?Copy !req
55. It probably has to do with your reputation.Copy !req
56. Reputation? I have a reputation?Copy !req
57. Colton plays by the book and you don't.
They feel your methods, your theories are...Copy !req
58. Spooky?Copy !req
59. - Do you think I'm spooky?
- Agent Scully's in here, sir.Copy !req
60. Dana!Copy !req
61. Sorry I'm late.Copy !req
62. We just got here.Copy !req
63. Uh... Fox Mulder. Tom Colton.Copy !req
64. So, Mulder, what do you think? Does this
look like the work of little green men?Copy !req
65. - Grey.
- Excuse me?Copy !req
66. Grey.Copy !req
67. You said green men.
A Reticulan skin tone is actually grey.Copy !req
68. They're notorious for their extraction
of terrestrial human livers,Copy !req
69. .. due to iron depletion
in the Reticulan galaxy.Copy !req
70. You can't be serious!Copy !req
71. Do you have any idea what
liver and onions go for on Reticula?Copy !req
72. Excuse me.Copy !req
73. Dana, I've been thinking about this
and I have a theory.Copy !req
74. It might explain a lot.
Tell me what you think.Copy !req
75. What if the guy enters the building...Copy !req
76. Hold on a second.
What in the hell is he doing?Copy !req
77. Uh, that vent is 6 inches by about 18.Copy !req
78. Even if a Reticulan could crawl through,
it's screwed in place.Copy !req
79. This is the print
I took from Usher's office.Copy !req
80. These others are from an X-File.Copy !req
81. Ten murders, Baltimore area,
undetermined points of entry.Copy !req
82. Each victim had their liver removed.Copy !req
83. These prints were found
at 5 of the 10 crime scenes.Copy !req
84. - Ten murders. Colton never mentioned...
- Most likely he's unaware of them.Copy !req
85. These two prints were lifted five years
before he was born at Powhattan Mill.Copy !req
86. And these three were lifted probably
five years before his mother was even born.Copy !req
87. Are you saying these prints
are from the 19605 and the 19305?Copy !req
88. Fingerprinting was just starting in 1903, but
there was a murder with an extracted liver.Copy !req
89. Now, that's five murders every 30 years.
That makes two more to go this year.Copy !req
90. You're saying these are copycats?Copy !req
91. What did we learn our first day
at the Academy?Copy !req
92. Each fingerprint is unique.
These are a perfect match.Copy !req
93. Are you suggesting I go before
the Violent Crimes Section...Copy !req
94. .. and present a profile saying
these murders are done by aliens?Copy !req
95. No! I find no evidence of alien involvement.Copy !req
96. What, then? This is the work
of a 100-year-old serial killer...Copy !req
97. .. who overpowered
a six-foot-two businessman?Copy !req
98. He'll stick out in a crowd
with ten-inch fingers!Copy !req
99. Look, bottom line.Copy !req
100. This is Colton's case.Copy !req
101. Our X-File dates back to 1903.
We had it first.Copy !req
102. Mulder, they don't want you involved.
They don't want to hear your theories.Copy !req
103. That's why Blevins
has you hidden away down here.Copy !req
104. You're down here, too.Copy !req
105. Look, why don't we agree to this?Copy !req
106. They have their investigation, we have ours.
And never the twain shall meet.Copy !req
107. Agreed?Copy !req
108. After a careful review of the violent
and powerful nature of these murders,Copy !req
109. ..I believe the killer to be a male, 25-35 years
of age, with above average intelligence.Copy !req
110. His manner of entry
has so far been undetectable.Copy !req
111. This may be due to his knowledgeCopy !req
112. of the inner structure
of buildings and duct works.Copy !req
113. Or that he in fact hides in plain sight
posing as deliver or maintenance workers.Copy !req
114. The extraction of the liver is the most
significant detail of these crimes.Copy !req
115. The liver possesses regenerative qualities.
It cleanses the blood.Copy !req
116. The taking of this trophy
is the transferring act for the killer to...Copy !req
117. .. cleanse himself of his own impurities.Copy !req
118. I think he is acting under the classic form
of obsessive-compulsive behaviour.Copy !req
119. Since the victims are unrelated
and we cannot predict who will be next,Copy !req
120. .. we must use the fact that a killer
won't always succeed in finding a victim.Copy !req
121. When this occurs...Copy !req
122. ..a serial killer may return to
the site of a previous murder,Copy !req
123. .. hoping to recapture the emotional high.Copy !req
124. I think our best course of action
is to target these sites.Copy !req
125. Good job, Agent Scully.Copy !req
126. If there are no objections, we'll begin
our stakeouts of the murder sites tonight.Copy !req
127. We're looking for a male, 25-35,
possibly wearing a uniform.Copy !req
128. Gas company, UPS, whatever. I know
you're assigned to another area, Scully,Copy !req
129. .. but you're welcome
to come aboard with us on this.Copy !req
130. That is if you don't mind working in an area
that's a bit more down to earth.Copy !req
131. Position ten. Station check.Copy !req
132. Position ten, I copy.Copy !req
133. You wouldn't shoot an unarmed man,
would you, copper?Copy !req
134. - Mulder, what are you doing here?
- He's not coming back.Copy !req
135. His thrill comes from the challenge
of a seemingly impossible entry.Copy !req
136. If you'd read the X-File,
you'd come to the same conclusion.Copy !req
137. - Mulder, you are jeopardising my stakeout.
- Seeds?Copy !req
138. You're wasting your time.Copy !req
139. I'm going home!Copy !req
140. Scully! Call for backup and get over here!Copy !req
141. Position ten requesting backup!Copy !req
142. In there.Copy !req
143. Federal Agent!Copy !req
144. I'm armed!Copy !req
145. Proceed down the vent. Slowly!Copy !req
146. Cover down to the corner!Copy !req
147. She's not by her car!Copy !req
148. - Take him!
- Move! Move! Move!Copy !req
149. FBI. Don't move! Don't move!
Get your hands up! Keep 'em up!Copy !req
150. You're under arrest.
You have the right to remain silent...Copy !req
151. You were right.Copy !req
152. You have a right to have
an attorney present during questioning.Copy !req
153. If you cannot afford an attorney,
one will be appointed for you.Copy !req
154. Is your full name Eugene Victor Tooms?Copy !req
155. Yes.Copy !req
156. Are you a resident of the state of Maryland?Copy !req
157. Yes.Copy !req
158. Are you an employee
of the Baltimore Municipal Animal Control?Copy !req
159. Yes.Copy !req
160. Is it your intent to lie to me
about anything here today?Copy !req
161. No.Copy !req
162. Were you ever enrolled in college?Copy !req
163. Yes.Copy !req
164. Were you ever enrolled in medical school?Copy !req
165. No.Copy !req
166. Have you ever removed a liver
from a human being?Copy !req
167. No.Copy !req
168. Have you ever killed a living creature?Copy !req
169. Yes.Copy !req
170. Have you ever killed a human being?Copy !req
171. No.Copy !req
172. Were you ever in George Usher's office?Copy !req
173. No.Copy !req
174. Did you kill George Usher?Copy !req
175. No.Copy !req
176. Are you over 100 years old?Copy !req
177. - That must be a control question.
- I had her ask it.Copy !req
178. No.Copy !req
179. Have you ever been to Powhattan Mill?Copy !req
180. Yes.Copy !req
181. In 1933?Copy !req
182. No.Copy !req
183. Are you afraid you might fall this test?Copy !req
184. Well...Copy !req
185. Yes. Because I didn't do anything.Copy !req
186. He nailed it... A+.Copy !req
187. As far as I'm concerned,
the subject did not kill those two people.Copy !req
188. Maintenance at the office building
confirmed the call to Animal Control...Copy !req
189. .. about a bad smell. They found a dead cat
in the second floor ventilation ducts.Copy !req
190. Still doesn't explain why he was there
that late at night.Copy !req
191. He's a civil servant with initiative
and we busted him for it.Copy !req
192. He was crawling up an air duct,
by himself, without alerting security.Copy !req
193. Dana, he passed the test.Copy !req
194. His story checks out. He's not the guy.
It doesn't mean your profile's incorrect.Copy !req
195. Scully's right. It is the guy.Copy !req
196. What have you got, Mulder?Copy !req
197. He lied on questions 11 and 13.Copy !req
198. His electrodermal and cardiographic
response nearly go off the chart.Copy !req
199. ls number 11 the 100-year-old question?Copy !req
200. Well, I had a reaction
to that stupid question.Copy !req
201. And what is this Powhattan Mill thing?Copy !req
202. Two murders with matching MOs occurred
in Powhattan Mill in 1933. Look at the chart.Copy !req
203. My interpretation of those reactions...Copy !req
204. I don't need you or that machine
telling me if Tooms was alive in '33!Copy !req
205. He's the guy.Copy !req
206. I'm letting him go.Copy !req
207. You coming?Copy !req
208. Tom, I want to thank you for letting me
put in some time with the VCS.Copy !req
209. - But I am officially assigned to the X-Files.
- I'll see what I can do about that.Copy !req
210. Tom, I can look out for myself.Copy !req
211. You said Mulder was out there.Copy !req
212. That guy's insane.Copy !req
213. You knew they wouldn't believe you.
Why did you push it?Copy !req
214. Maybe I thought you caught the right guy.Copy !req
215. And maybe I run into so many people
who are hostile...Copy !req
216. .. because they can't open their minds
to the possibilities...Copy !req
217. .. that sometimes
the need to mess with their heads...Copy !req
218. .. outweighs the millstone of humiliation.Copy !req
219. It seems like you were acting
very territorial.Copy !req
220. - I don't know...
- Of course I was.Copy !req
221. In our investigations,
you may not always agree with me,Copy !req
222. .. but at least you respect the journey.Copy !req
223. And if you want to continue working
with them, I won't hold it against you.Copy !req
224. I don't know. You must have something
more than your polygraph interpretation...Copy !req
225. ..to back up this bizarre theory
and I have to see what it is.Copy !req
226. These are Eugene Tooms's prints.Copy !req
227. This is the fingerprint
they took from Usher's office.Copy !req
228. It matches the old ones from the X-Files.Copy !req
229. Obviously no match.Copy !req
230. What if...Copy !req
231. .. somehow...Copy !req
232. How could that be?Copy !req
233. The only thing I know for certain is...
they let him go.Copy !req
234. Ahh! Agh!Copy !req
235. 64 inches from the south wall.Copy !req
236. Let's check on liver transplants
in the next 24 hours.Copy !req
237. - Maybe this is black market.
- Come on! It was ripped outta there.Copy !req
238. Look, at this point I'm willing
to give any theory a shot!Copy !req
239. Any sane theory. Dana, I only want qualified
members of the team at the crime scene.Copy !req
240. What's the matter?
You worried I'm going to solve your case?Copy !req
241. Tom, we have authorised access
to this crime scene.Copy !req
242. A report of you obstructing another officer's
investigation might stick out on your file.Copy !req
243. Look, Dana, whose side are you on?Copy !req
244. The victim's.Copy !req
245. 105 inches from the fireplace.Copy !req
246. The victim is a Thomas Werner,
single, white...Copy !req
247. It's Tooms.Copy !req
248. And he took something.Copy !req
249. Baltimore PD checked out
Tooms's apartment. It was a cover.Copy !req
250. No one has ever lived there and he hasn't
shown up for work since the arrest.Copy !req
251. I found him.Copy !req
252. How do we learn about the present?
We look to the past.Copy !req
253. I think this is where it all began
in 1903, on Exeter Street.Copy !req
254. Look at the address
of that first murder in 1903.Copy !req
255. Apartment 203.Copy !req
256. He killed the guy above him.Copy !req
257. Maybe he played the Victrola too loud.Copy !req
258. - This must be Tooms's great-grandfather.
- What about the prints?Copy !req
259. Genetics might explain the patterns.Copy !req
260. It also might explain
the sociopathic attitudes and behaviours.Copy !req
261. It begins with one family memberCopy !req
262. who raises an offspring
who raises the next child...Copy !req
263. What is this? The Anti-Waltons?Copy !req
264. What do you think?Copy !req
265. I think we have to track Eugene Tooms.
There's four down and one to go this year.Copy !req
266. If we don't get him right now,
the next chance will be in...Copy !req
267. 2023.Copy !req
268. You'll be head of the Bureau by then.
You go through the census.Copy !req
269. I'll plough through this century's
marriage, birth, death certificates and...Copy !req
270. Do you have any Dramamine on you?
These things make me seasick.Copy !req
271. - Anything?
- Nope.Copy !req
272. He disappeared off the face of the earth.
You?Copy !req
273. Never was born. Never married. Never died.Copy !req
274. At least in Baltimore County.Copy !req
275. Oh, I did find one thing, though.Copy !req
276. It's the current address
of the investigating officerCopy !req
277. of the Powhattan Mill murders in 1933.Copy !req
278. I've been waiting 25 years for you.Copy !req
279. Sir?Copy !req
280. I called it quits in 1968...Copy !req
281. .. after 45 years as a cop.Copy !req
282. And those killings at Powhattan Mill...Copy !req
283. I was a sheriff then
and I'd seen my share of murders.Copy !req
284. Bloody ones.Copy !req
285. But I could go home and...Copy !req
286. .. pitch a few baseballs to my kid
and never give it a second thought.Copy !req
287. You gotta be able to do that.
You... you'd go crazy, right?Copy !req
288. But those murders in Powhattan Mill...Copy !req
289. When I walked into that room,
my heart went cold.Copy !req
290. My hands... numbed.Copy !req
291. I could feel...Copy !req
292. ..it!Copy !req
293. Feel what, Frank?Copy !req
294. When I first heard about
the death camps in 1945,Copy !req
295. ..I remembered Powhattan Mill.Copy !req
296. And I see the Kurds and the Bosnians.Copy !req
297. That room is there, I tell you.Copy !req
298. It's like all the horrible acts
that humans are capable of...Copy !req
299. .. somehow gave birth to some kind of...Copy !req
300. .. human monster.Copy !req
301. That's why I say
I've been waiting for you.Copy !req
302. Uh...Copy !req
303. There's a box in the trunk here.
Get it for me, would you, please?Copy !req
304. Now, this is all the evidence I've collected.Copy !req
305. - Officially and unofficially.
- Unofficially?Copy !req
306. I knew that the murders in '63
were by the same... person as in '33.Copy !req
307. But by then they had me
on a desk pushing papers...Copy !req
308. .. and they wouldn't let me
anywhere near the case.Copy !req
309. - A piece of the removed liver?
- Yes.Copy !req
310. But, you know, that's not
the only trophy he took with him.Copy !req
311. Family members reported small
personal effects missing in each case.Copy !req
312. A hairbrush in the Walters murder.
A coffee mug in the Taylor murder.Copy !req
313. Have you ever heard
the name Eugene Victor Tooms?Copy !req
314. When they wouldn't bring me aboard in '63,
I... I did some of my own work.Copy !req
315. I took these surveillance pictures.Copy !req
316. This...Copy !req
317. ..is Tooms.Copy !req
318. Of course, that was him 30 years ago.Copy !req
319. And this...Copy !req
320. ..is the apartment where he lived.Copy !req
321. - It was located at...
- 66 Exeter Street?Copy !req
322. Right.Copy !req
323. That's it. Right there.Copy !req
324. Here's 103.Copy !req
325. The old man was right.Copy !req
326. You can feel it.Copy !req
327. There's nothing here.Copy !req
328. Check this out.Copy !req
329. What's down here?Copy !req
330. I don't know.Copy !req
331. Let's find out.Copy !req
332. Just an old coal cellar.Copy !req
333. Somebody having a garage sale?Copy !req
334. - This is the shape on Werner's mantel.
- Frank said he collected trophies.Copy !req
335. - Does he live in here?
- It looks like the wall's deteriorating.Copy !req
336. No. Somebody made it.Copy !req
337. This is a nest.Copy !req
338. Look.Copy !req
339. It's made out of rags and newspapers.Copy !req
340. This looks like the opening.
Think there's anything inside?Copy !req
341. Oh, my God, Mulder. It smells like...Copy !req
342. I think it's bile.Copy !req
343. Is there any way I can get it off my fingers
quickly without betraying my cool exterior?Copy !req
344. - No one could live in this.
- I don't think it's where he lives.Copy !req
345. I think it's where he hibernates.Copy !req
346. - Hibernates?
- Just listen.Copy !req
347. What if some genetic mutationCopy !req
348. could allow a man to awaken
every 30 years?Copy !req
349. Mulder...Copy !req
350. And what if the five livers could provide him
sustenance for that period?Copy !req
351. What if Tooms is some kind of
20th century... genetic mutant?Copy !req
352. In any case, he's not here now
and he's gotta come back.Copy !req
353. - We'll need a surveillance team.
- That'll take some finagling.Copy !req
354. You go downtown and see what
you can finagle and I'll keep watch.Copy !req
355. Oh, wait. I'm snagged on something.Copy !req
356. Oh, it's OK. I got it.Copy !req
357. It's about time.Copy !req
358. So... who we looking for again?Copy !req
359. Eugene Tooms. He's unarmed
but consider him dangerous.Copy !req
360. Scully and I will be back to relieve you
in eight hours if he doesn't show.Copy !req
361. Right here.Copy !req
362. You got it... Spooky.Copy !req
363. We have to talk.Copy !req
364. - I have to meet Mulder.
- That's why we have to talk.Copy !req
365. You're using two of my men
to sit in front of a condemned building!Copy !req
366. It isn't interfering with your investigation.Copy !req
367. When we had lunch, I looked forward
to working with you. You are a good agent.Copy !req
368. But, after Mulder,
I couldn't have you far enough away.Copy !req
369. Don't go down there.
I had the stakeout called off.Copy !req
370. You can't do that!Copy !req
371. No, I can't! But my Regional ASA did itCopy !req
372. once I told him
about the waste in man-hours.Copy !req
373. Uh-uh. Let me call Mulder.
Let me tell him the news.Copy !req
374. Is this what it takes
to climb the ladder, Colton?Copy !req
375. All the way to the top.Copy !req
376. Then I can't wait till you fall off
and land on your ass.Copy !req
377. This is Fox Mulder.
I'm not here. Leave a message.Copy !req
378. Where is everyone?Copy !req
379. Scully?Copy !req
