The Wire 5x3

1. Huh.

2. Type quieter, asshole.

3. Early relief.

4. So get the fuck out of here.

5. Jesus, bunk. What time is it?

6. 4:30.

7. I couldn't sleep, so get the fuck gone.

8. What time did mcnulty leave last night?

9. He never did. He's in number one.

10. Pulling his hair out over some shit.

11. Think again about what the fuck you're doing.

12. Bunk, this can work.

13. It can.

14. Fuck you. I mean that.

15. Aw, jimmy, 4:00 in the fucking morning?

16. Oh, so it is.

17. All of these?

18. Homeless murders from the last five years.

19. Everything before that is on microfilm,

20. But we got enough right here.

21. - Jimmy. - Most of it open.

22. We don't do so well with homeless killings.

23. Transient locales, no nearest, no dearest.

24. No one who gives a fuck.

25. Cases stay open forever.

26. You're going to jail behind this shit.

27. Yes, you are.

28. You know what they do to police in jail?

29. Pretty police like yourself?

30. Motherfucker, we have kids.

31. Houses. Car payments. Furniture.

32. Jimmy, i just bought brand-new lawn chairs and a glass patio table.

33. Now, you don't buy no shit like that if you planning

34. To lose your job and go to prison.

35. You won't even get past the me.

36. Watch me.

37. You're dumping murders on us that we can't solve.

38. You're fucking the squad's clearance rate.

39. Fuck the fucking numbers already.

40. The fucking numbers destroyed this fucking department.

41. Landsman and his clearance rate can suck a hairy asshole.

42. Marlo ain't worth it, man. Nobody is.

43. Marlo's an asshole.

44. He does not get to win. We get to win.

45. This case doesn't go away just because the bosses can't find

46. The money to pay for it.

47. These are fucking murders— ghetto murders, but still.

48. I came back out of the western to work this case

49. 'cause they said it would be worked.

50. I came back out on a promise,

51. And they're gonna keep that promise.

52. Whether they know it or not.

53. I'm gonna tell landsman.

54. Yeah. You keep on with it, i'm gonna rat you out.

55. Well, you do what you got to do.

56. My name is nowhere in the file.

57. I don't want fuck to do with this.

58. Hey, bunk.

59. What're you doing?

60. Final is out.

61. - I want to see my story. - Now?

62. It's my first time out front.

63. I want to see it.

64. This is why we should get home delivery.

65. Why pay for it when i get it for free at the office?

66. Be back.

67. Brother ray.

68. God rest ye.

69. When does the "sun" get here?

70. Around now, usually.

71. Anybody got a working car?

72. I got one, but i'm going back out to my crime scene for a canvass.

73. Drop me at the me?

74. Jimmy.

75. My office now.

76. I'll get a lift over from one of the central cars.

77. This is way past any shit you ever pulled

78. In your life, jimmy. Think on it.

79. You see greggs out there, bagging evidence alone,

80. Then going back out to recanvass on a triple?

81. A triple fucking murder.

82. A home invasion, and she's working it alone.

83. They pulled crutchfield this morning,

84. Put him back in the rotation.

85. That's on them, but you can't come—

86. Fucking right, that's on them.

87. A triple murder, and 12 hours later

88. They leave one detective alone on it?

89. I guess she's lucky she has a car.

90. This shit won't work.

91. Then we're no worse than before.

92. Extra red name or two on the board.

93. Yeah, unless you got caught.

94. Who in this fucking unit is gonna catch me?

95. Most of the guys up here couldn't catch the clap

96. In a mexican whorehouse.

97. What's with the red ribbon?

98. Barlow had an open strangle

99. A few years back.

100. Homeless guy with a red ribbon tied around his wrist.

101. So that's two.

102. Also, i found an open homeless case which ray cole worked.

103. I wrote a ribbon into his office reports.

104. So there's three.

105. Our guy didn't have a red ribbon.

106. - That's where i'm headed. - Jesus.

107. Listen to yourself.

108. Upstairs wouldn't jump on a real serial killer—

109. Fucking marlo, who's got bodies all over him.

110. Well, maybe they need the make-believe.

111. Yeah, maybe you're the asshole who just lost his fucking mind.

112. Crutchfield.

113. Yeah, i'm locked in the box.

114. ( laughs ) in the box?

115. It's no joke. Let me out.

116. Be right there.

117. Jimmy.

118. He fuck you?

119. He tried...

120. But mostly he just fucks himself.

121. You ain't seen those yet, huh?

122. I'll bet you didn't.

123. Fucking burrell's asshole must be so tight, you couldn't pull

124. A pin from it with a john deere tractor.

125. Here you're promising a double-digit drop,

126. And he gives you a 4% bump for two quarters in a row.

127. Thanks for bringing these by, stan.

128. Well, i wanted to give you a heads-up.

129. Truth is, looking at numbers like those, i'm thinking you

130. Could do a lot worse than give me a run

131. As acting commissioner.

132. I know you couldn't make me permanent, maybe six months

133. While you keep grooming your boy daniels.

134. I'd get a pension bump and you'd get a head start

135. On clearing out deadwood,

136. Beginning with burrell and rawls.

137. Thanks, stan.

138. Let me think on it.

139. You do that, tommy.

140. Even on an acting basis, can you imagine nerese

141. And the ministers dealing with commissioner valchek?

142. What are you gonna do about the numbers?

143. Fuck can i do? I cut the department budget to the bone, right?

144. Can't very well complain when the crime rate bumps.

145. Burrell comes in here and owns these,

146. I got to give him a pass—

147. At least until i can fix his money problems.

148. Your piece took a bad bite there.

149. 35 inches down to 12?

150. Yeah, well, it's my fault for giving it up to the a-section.

151. Page one editor made noises like it was gonna go out front.

152. Then he tossed it back to metro before the double-dot.

153. Night editor didn't have room to take it back, so...

154. Story deserved better. Sorry.

155. Three people murdered in a house,

156. And it gets 12 inches below the fold.

157. Explain that to me.

158. There's no explaining it.

159. Advertising's down, we got a smaller news hole,

160. We're not managing it well.

161. We messed up. That's all.

162. Wrong zip code.

163. They're dead where it doesn't count.

164. If they were white and murdered in timonium,

165. You'd have had 30 inches off the front.

166. Would have been my first front-pager where i didn't share a byline.

167. Yeah?

168. I drove down to the port covington plant

169. This morning to get a copy.

170. Well, you ain't the first to do that.

171. Our 10-7 on the floor yet?

172. He's by the overhead camera.

173. I need to grab prints, get him id'd.

174. Don't you want to wait for the post,

175. Keep his hands clean for trace?

176. I need to know who my victim is.

177. That's the priority.

178. Finish your breakfast. I got plenty of time.

179. Nothing under the nails that i can see.

180. - I think we can risk prints. - Hmm.

181. Something's up.

182. Please, gather 'round.

183. Steve, could someone get word across the hall to features and sports?

184. - Sure. - We want everyone on this.

185. What, did we get sold again?

186. First the "la times" buys us up, then the "tribune."

187. Law of the fish.

188. - We're the minnow. - Maybe we won a pulitzer.

189. Pulitzers are still a week away.

190. It just turned april.

191. Oh, look at whiting's pants.

192. If we won a pulitzer, the executive editor would be tumescent.

193. Toom-what?

194. Speak english. I'm just a police reporter.

195. Tumescent. Engorged.

196. Exactly.

197. It's a bad time for newspapers, as you all know.

198. The news hole is shrinking as advertising dollars

199. Continue to decline.

200. Our circulation numbers are also down as we compete

201. With a variety of media.

202. Technology is driving distribution,

203. And the internet

204. Is a free source of news and opinions.

205. Seeking a balance in this new world,

206. We're now faced with hard choices.

207. We opened our first foreign bureau in london in 1924.

208. The "sun"'s foreign coverage

209. Has been a source of pride ever since.

210. So it is with tremendous regret...

211. That i tell you that chicago has made it clear

212. That the bureaus in beijing,

213. Moscow, jerusalem,

214. Johannesburg, and london will all be shuttered.

215. Elsewhere in the newsroom,

216. There will be a fresh round of buyouts.

217. Chicago has given us some specific budgetary targets

218. That will require some hard choices

219. Throughout the newsroom.

220. We are, quite simply,

221. Going to have to find ways to do more with less.

222. So i guess i will turn this over to tom

223. Who will get into the specifics.

224. I know some of you have questions.

225. If you could just hold them for me until after i've had a chance to speak.

226. Pull your clipbook together. Time to find a new home.

227. First, chicago has sent us a memo

228. Outlining options that are available to those of you...

229. The aorta should have elasticity to it,

230. But it's rock hard.

231. Whoever strangled him could've just waited a month

232. Or two more.

233. This guy was on his last legs.

234. It is what it is.

235. In addition to the fractured hyoid and the bruising,

236. I got signs of a struggle around the body.

237. A couple of witnesses

238. Who thought they heard sounds of a struggle inside the house.

239. Also that ribbon you snipped off,

240. It might tie to other cases.

241. The ribbon my own investigator missed at the scene.

242. Well, that happens. It was high on the wrist.

243. Cause and manner is homicide by strangulation.

244. Good hunting, detective.

245. "and anyone requiring additional information

246. On cobra benefits and pension payout as part

247. Of the voluntary separation plan can schedule

248. An appointment with human resources."

249. Some of you will migrate into new positions

250. While others will, of course, be moving on

251. To other opportunities beyond the "sun."

252. But everyone in this room has done excellent work

253. And should be proud of their contributions.

254. Yeah?

255. How many buyouts are there?

256. That hasn't been determined yet.

257. We're talking to the union later today.

258. How will this affect the upcoming

259. Contract negotiations with the guild?

260. Badly. Kiss any raise good-bye.

261. How come there's cuts in the newsroom

262. - When the company's still profitable? - Yeah.

263. There's nobody that feels worse about this than i do.

264. I've seen the excellent work we've done here in baltimore.

265. The sooner we start meeting with you individually,

266. The sooner i can answer all of your questions.

267. - Not o'mara. - Yeah.

268. Aw, no.

269. Good luck everybody.

270. No increase in felonies and a 1% bump in total crime.

271. Do you vouch for these figures?

272. - Sir? - No increase in crime

273. Even after i cut you guys to the bone.

274. This is what you're telling me?

275. 'cause the one thing i'm asking of you guys—

276. The one thing that i'm asking above all—

277. Is that you bring me clean numbers.

278. Yes, mr. Mayor. You made that clear.

279. Very good, then.

280. Burrell is done.

281. He just killed himself.

282. We leak the real stats, hold the cooked ones in case he won't go quietly.

283. And replace him with who? Rawls?

284. He came in with the same stats.

285. If i know bill rawls, he'll be calling over here

286. As soon as he gets back to his office,

287. Telling us he warned burrell against cooking the books.

288. The ministers won't live with rawls.

289. Neither will nerese.

290. As acting commissioner they will, for a few months at least,

291. If we've got a black candidate to sell them.

292. Daniels isn't ready.

293. He's only been colonel for a year.

294. A year will do in a pinch.

295. You float it with one of your bunkies on calvert street.

296. See how it plays.

297. Burrell reads that, he'll shit melons.

298. I fucking hope so.

299. It's baltimore.

300. No one lives forever.

301. Andreas, right?

302. The russian sent me.

303. Need you to get a word to vondas.

304. He got a new friend.

305. I never hear the name.

306. Just let him know marlo came past with a gift.

307. Be at you same time tomorrow.

308. Any idea how long this could take?

309. Don't know.

310. Might be here all day.

311. I have meetings scheduled.

312. We've got to lay the foundation carefully.

313. Make it so the grand jurors understand all the ins and outs

314. So they don't get lost in the details.

315. Mr. Howard?

316. Is there any way i could go earlier?

317. If you're important enough, sure.

318. I'm the vice president of a major financial institution.

319. Who the fuck isn't?

320. Now, sir, directing your attention

321. To the document in your hand,

322. Is that also an account statement?

323. Yes, it is,

324. For a non-profit, interest-bearing account,

325. Organizational, with 501(c)(3) designation.

326. Can you begin by slowly explaining

327. In the most basic terms each of those things,

328. Beginning with the word non-profit?

329. - Man: Hey, is box two open? - Man 2: Not yet.

330. What about three?

331. Someone's killing homeless men.

332. Medical examiner says so.

333. Weird thing about my case, bunk.

334. Dead man was homeless, but he had a red ribbon

335. Tied around his wrist.

336. I mean, what does a homeless guy have to remember

337. That he should have a red ribbon tied around his wrist?

338. ( farts ) oh!

339. Barlow.

340. - What? - Nice out.

341. Oh, like chanel no. 5 comes out of your ass, moreland.

342. If you got a problem, then i got a problem.

343. That's how the co-op work.

344. What's the problem?

345. I got too much money.

346. Son, believe me, you ain't alone.

347. What to do with the shit we sell ain't no thing.

348. In baltimore, dope and coke sell themselves,

349. But the money that come back?

350. Ain't enough mattresses, is there, now?

351. You got any ideas?

352. Yeah, a few.

353. If you asking.

354. Not twigg. Damn.

355. Guy gives 20 years to the paper,

356. And this how it ends?

357. Fact of the matter is, it's more profitable

358. These days to run a worse paper for less money.

359. Cut back people and pages, you increase revenue.

360. If we're lucky, they'll just get rid of deadwood.

361. How'd it go?

362. - "you've done excellent work." - oh, jeez.

363. Without being explicit, they gave me a choice.

364. Either the copy desk or the buyout.

365. You're kidding, right?

366. Apparently, they can hire one-and-a-half twentysomethings

367. For what it costs to keep me in print, so...

368. Damn, roger. Sorry, man.

369. Fuck it. I might as well get to work on the great american novel.

370. Yeah.

371. Gus, come on in.

372. Have a seat.

373. Relax, gus. We need you here.

374. We value your dedication.

375. You've done excellent work.

376. We're counting on you to transition the new team.

377. There's still going to be excellent talent out there

378. That needs to be developed.

379. What kind of team's going to be left?

380. We're losing good people, but we expect to retain

381. The core of a solid staff.

382. Doing more with less.

383. That's what we have to contemplate going forward.

384. More with less, huh?

385. Huh, look at this.

386. A red ribbon in one of ray cole's files.

387. Cole left a note with it.

388. "found on left wrist of victim.

389. Check against other cases."

390. - Hey, hon. - Hi.

391. How's the stain look on the cabinets? They dry yet?

392. They look great. They're just about dry.

393. Great. I'm on my way.

394. This is the hard part, getting these guys to give a shit.

395. Let's get a taste. I'm buying.

396. You think i'm drinking with you?

397. Go home, jimmy.

398. Think your weak shit through, man.

399. Go home?

400. For the love of god, i'm working a serial killer.

401. You want to talk on it?

402. Went with chris and them,

403. Set up on this family.

404. Everything so serious now.

405. Yo, little man, you finish your homework?

406. 'cause it's late now, and it's only gonna get later

407. If we don't roll home soon.

408. Ain't no school tomorrow. Teacher meetings.

409. We should do something, mike.

410. Got my corner to run, man.

411. What?

412. What, nigga?

413. Six flags be open again.

414. That shit's taking forever.

415. Complicated stuff, i suppose.

416. More like joe make it complicated.

417. That nigga got a thing for conversation.

418. Not like marlo.

419. Definitely not.

420. Now, see, pastor here,

421. He one of about three i like to give money to.

422. Help with his good works and all that.

423. Good works?

424. Oh, he down with all kind of missionary work

425. Going on down in the islands.

426. You know, building a church for some folk,

427. A schoolhouse for some other folks,

428. All kind of good shit like that.

429. - And what else y'all building? - A hospital.

430. Hospital, yeah.

431. Except they've been building that mess for about 10 years now,

432. And nothing ever actually get finished.

433. How you gonna clean my money?

434. Got accounts at some of the banks down there.

435. Donations come in as cash, cashier's checks come out.

436. Tiny-ass caribbean island don't truck with no subpoenas,

437. No court orders, none of that.

438. You pay 10 on the dollar.

439. Anything beyond that depends on your generosity,

440. To save those who want to be saved.

441. I'm back.

442. I can see that.

443. Again.

444. I saw your text message on my cell phone today.

445. It took me a minute to remember who the hell you were.

446. - It ain't been that long. - Shit.

447. When you left, i was still covering the labor beat.

448. We ain't had a labor reporter around here in three years.

449. Yeah, well, now you the big, bad city editor,

450. And i'm whoring myself for politicians.

451. You got out just at the right time, too.

452. - That bad, huh? - Chicago is killing us.

453. One buyout after another.

454. I can't even begin to think what our next round

455. Of guild negotiations is gonna be like.

456. Enough of me crying.

457. What are you selling tonight, dear norman?

458. Carcetti's planning to shitcan burrell.

459. He's talking to people and considering replacements.

460. City hall source?

461. Who's the leading candidate?

462. Rawls, deputy of operations,

463. Might have the job for a few months,

464. But there's a frontrunner from deeper in the department.

465. Cedric daniels.

466. It's been a while since i've been on the street there, norman.

467. Who's this daniels?

468. Chief of detectives. Polished.

469. Holds a law degree.

470. Brought closure to some high-level cases.

471. His ex-wife got herself elected to the council last go-round.

472. I always like photos with my stories.

473. And this is aimed at who? Huh?

474. The ministers? Nerese?

475. You want to see if they can live with this fella here, right?

476. A'ight.

477. From one whore to another.

478. Whoa, what the fuck?

479. Check this shit out.

480. - ( police radio chatter ) - that's beautiful.

481. Holy shit. Look at this motherfucker.

482. Hit him with the spot.

483. Cid. Figures, don't it?

484. Where y'all need to go?

485. Down six flags.

486. You talking roundtrip?

487. Run you 200 plus gas.

488. Where you at?

489. I got 150, gas included if it even get us there.

490. Don't be fretting on the ride, now.

491. This motherfucker tried and true.

492. A'ight.

493. I got half when we get there and half on the way back.

494. Guess you're not up for a story.

495. I need some work done right away.

496. What do you got?

497. Mayor's thinking about firing the police commissioner.

498. He's floating the idea, anyway.

499. Yeah, no problem. I'm all over it.

500. What do you know about daniels?

501. - Who is he? - Twigg: Cid commander.

502. Came out of the eastern deu,

503. Married to the daniels that won the council seat in '06.

504. Brought in a couple of big wiretap cases.

505. They gave him the western, hoping to clean up that district

506. After they shitcanned bunny colvin.

507. Since getting separated, he's been shacked up

508. With ronnie pearlman over at the state's attorney's office.

509. No suction early in his career,

510. But now that he's got carcetti's ear,

511. Now the brass stay out of his way.

512. What's the man's favorite color?

513. You sure?

514. Yeah, what the hell? I'm already on the clock.

515. - Ops bureau. - Hi, darlin'.

516. It's roger twigg with the "sunpapers."

517. - Hey, roger. - Is the deputy around?

518. - Sure. - Thanks, hon.

519. Hey, an hour or two, i'd have had it surrounded.

520. No doubt.

521. While mr. Deadwood here's working the story,

522. See if you can feed him some react quotes.

523. A generous gift, but your money,

700. And every morning before he went to work,

701. He'd sit at the table, reading the newspaper

702. With a cup of coffee,

703. And no one could interrupt him for that 15 minutes

704. Before he walked out the door.

705. And i remember watching him, thinking,

706. "what the hell is so important about that damned paper?

707. I want to be part of that."

708. Made me want to be a newspaperman.

709. One day, i was cutting class at patterson,

756. And then you're back in the rotation.

757. You done with this stupid shit?

758. Who the fuck do you need to hear it from, jimmy?

759. You have to let burrell know that this isn't coming from you.

760. That won't matter.

761. After what he read today, i'm the threat.

762. Well, then you have to tell him that you won't take the job,

763. That you don't want his chair.

764. And he believes me?

765. The alternative is that he goes public with what he knows,

766. Whatever he has about the old days.

767. He sat on it this long.

768. You said yourself he'd rather bury that file

769. Than to embarrass the department on his watch,

770. But if it's between you and him surviving,

771. What do you think he'll do, then?

772. How much could even be in that file?

773. An assets investigation?

774. Some loose talk?

775. It was so long ago.

776. Most of those guys have moved on.

777. He only needs smoke.

778. He doesn't even need fire to drag you down,

845. Give the killer some fucked-up fantasy,

846. Something bad, real bad.

847. It's got to grip the hearts and minds,

848. Give the people what they want from a serial killer.
