120. He won't play?

121. You beat the shit outta him because crime is up.

122. Press loves it and you score.

123. The flip-side is that if he caves,

124. You get yourself a snitch in the mayor's inner-circle.

125. So, um...

126. What's my role in your little drama?

127. I thought you might broker a meeting.

128. You know, help your fearless leader see the light

129. About his new friend on the council.

130. And i should tell him, what?

131. Make nice or invest heavily in petroleum jelly?

132. Hey, his ass, his choice.

133. You didn't talk to him?

154. I want the olsen twins.

155. You got 'em.

156. Slaves.

157. All they live for is to get you off.

158. But so now who you gonna do for 'em?

159. One guy, one act, one time.

160. Right. And the minute i name a guy you're gonna be like,

161. "i knew you were a cocksucker

162. From the first time i laid eyes on you.

163. Steve mcqueen, huh?

164. That's your fantasy?

165. You fuckin' closet-case motherfucker."

166. Steve mcqueen?

184. Can't it just be like...

185. Like this unbearable-looking woman?

186. You know like that old tune from "the golden girls,"

187. The short one with the coke-bottle glasses.

188. A guy.

189. Hey, yo.

190. Huh?

191. Let me ask you a question.

192. Where do you guys get those hats

193. With the bills over the ears like that.

194. I go into all the city stores and the only ones i can find

195. Are the ones with the bills in the front.

196. Naw, it's the same.

197. Just turn it sideways on your head.

198. Thanks.

199. Thank you.

200. That's a knucklehead from the low-rises, right there.

201. Terrace's spreading out.

202. They got to go somewheres, i guess.

203. Don't think you ought needed to do that.

204. He turned cur on me, man.

205. Nah.

206. I think you got played.

207. So, i'm guessin' from the terrace being all cute

208. About the property line.

209. I just wanted to wait and see

210. What you wanted us to do about it.

211. So, what you want us to do?

212. Get back to work.

213. Alright.

214. Your boy really jammed me, that little prick.

215. It was all over the news.

216. You did not look particularly commissioner-like.

217. Mayor told me the same thing.

218. You can't have that shit every week,

219. Not if you want his honor to give you the job permanent.

220. Tommy's a good kid, usually.

221. An asspain when he wants something,

222. But mostly good people.

223. I don't give a shit what he is.

224. Well, you can't have him pounding on you, erv.

225. Throw him a bone...

226. He'll take care of you.

227. Alright, but i draw the line

228. At going behind the mayor for this guy.

229. You can't sit where i'm sitting

230. And backdoor the fucking mayor.

231. Sorry i'm late, guys.

232. My kid had a little league game. It started late.

233. Well, i'll leave you boys to it.

234. And what i have brought together,

235. Let no man tear asunder.

236. - He win? - Who?

237. Your kid, his team.

238. Oh shit, who keeps score?

239. Yeah, it's a little hectic, but everybody steppin' off

240. At the right time.

241. These corner boys we dealin' with?

242. I don't think they even listen to their own people.

243. Yeah, i'm gonna talk to peoples.

244. Where you at?

245. Marlo? I can't find him.

246. And you told us not to start nothin',

247. So i set-up in the middle of the block.

248. You know, even that got hard stares.

249. I don't know. It ain't gonna hold, i don't think.

250. This marlo.

251. How hard you lookin' for him?

252. Like, why ain't you out there

253. Looking for this motherfucker right now?

254. 'cause you called this meeting here.

255. Shut the door.

265. Alright, man.

266. Double the muscle on every stash we got.

267. And if the man comin',

268. Make ready for the man.

269. It's not personal.

270. I swear to god, it is never personal with me.

271. Truth is,

272. I've been a councilman for almost three years now.

273. And that's a long fucking time to be ignored.

274. And this being baltimore, a white boy doesn't stand

275. Much chance running citywide.

276. Maybe the legislature, if the right seat opens up.

277. But until then, i'm stuck in a job with no power

278. Except getting potholes filled.

279. All due respect, councilman,

280. You're fucking with me because, what, you're bored?

281. A little, yeah.

282. And what the fuck?

283. I mean, when it comes to the crime thing,

284. This city can use all the fucking help it can get.

285. If you're looking for dirt, there isn't any.

286. There's always fucking dirt.

287. But right now,

288. I'm just looking to know how we could do better.

289. You give me that much.

290. I can try and get you what you need privately.

291. No hearings, no press, no grandstanding.

292. And if i don't play ball?

293. You're gonna have my ass

294. Every time i'm in front of your committee, right?

295. One thing comes to mind.

296. Shoot.

297. I can't get my marked units back from dickman street

298. To save my life.

299. Cars that are shopped for service

300. Don't come back for weeks.

301. You tell the mayor?

302. Not that you heard it from me.

303. Of course not.

305. 10,000 a set.

306. Nigger show that on a ride, he hangin' a sign on himself.

311. That's avon.

312. I know.

313. And avon, he comin' home, too.

314. Well, if you inclined to work something out, that's one thing.

315. If not, avon can seriously handle up.

316. I know.

317. So if you want to hold onto what's yours,

318. You best be ready.

319. You remember that barksdale kid?

320. The one who took all the weight?

321. Mmm.

322. Tied his neck to a doorknob in the prison library

323. And sat his ass down.

324. I dunno.

325. Men of color usually don't do themselves.

326. I mean, take me, for instance...

327. Yeah, i mean. You got all the reason in the world...

328. And yet here i am,

329. Still standing.

330. Give or take.

331. You looked at the scene photos?

332. Nah, there ain't none.

333. State police dogged it.

334. My turn, bunk.

335. Come on, come on.

336. Go with number three.

377. What he do, hang himself twice?

378. He could have been leaning straight forward

379. Until he blacked out then slid down

380. Which would give you the vertical.

381. Or how about i come up at him from behind...

382. And then set him down, make it look like goodbye cruel world.

383. What do the scene shots show?

384. None taken.

385. The troopers really fucked the pooch on this one.

539. Close my eyes

540. And see him layin' there all bloody and shit?

541. Cheese.

542. Cheese on a platter.

543. He never talks like that.

544. Now, why would—

545. Because all good things come to those who wait.

546. Does mcnulty know?

547. I'll raise his ass.

548. We'll keep our ears to the wire,

549. Keep gathering string, no problem.

550. But if bodies keep falling in the eastern district,

551. We might have to give up this wire tap.

552. Now you comin' around?

553. Been more than a damn year.

554. Looks just like his dad, huh?

555. Let me ask you.

556. When you heard dee was a suicide, what'd you think?

557. Hey, little fellow.

558. Come here.

559. Here's the thing: We got a tip.

560. And the autopsy report, it backs us up.

561. Can you put him down please?

562. Sure.

563. You know, i'm sorry about your loss.

564. He seemed like a pretty decent guy, all things considered.

565. So when i found out about this,

566. I felt like i owed him.

567. The last thing i wanted to do was upset you

568. If there was no point to it, so...

569. If there's anything i can help with

570. Or any questions you need answered...

571. Or whatever.

572. Major, how many people are under your command?

573. 278, sir.

574. 278.

575. And how many felony arrests they make last month?

576. Don't bother.

577. You made 16.

578. 16.

579. In a month.

580. Same time period.

581. How many handguns you pick up?

582. All shifts, all sectors.

583. Once again, don't bother.

584. The answer is none.

585. None.

586. You had four bodies last night in how many hours?

587. Shut the fucking book, how many hours?

588. Seven.

589. Try five.

590. Tell me about this kid.

591. I believe his name is james...

592. James toney.

593. When's the last time he was arrested?

594. With who?

595. Where's he sling?

596. How about this guy?

597. Or him?

598. Or him?

599. You know what?

600. You got four bodies, all within two blocks of each other

601. And you can't even start to connect the fucking dots.

602. You got eight hours to get a grip

603. On this mess or you're done. You hear me?

604. Done.

605. Marlo?

606. You know i'm with avon, right?

607. Stringer bell?

608. Can we talk?

609. I need you to walk back up there and pack up your people.

610. I'm being a gentleman about it for the moment.

611. You offer up what you have on this,

612. You start the clock running on yourselves.

613. The wiretap has to surface in court.

614. No way around it.

615. She's right.

616. We finally got something worth listening to

617. And you're talking about giving up the wire?

618. Makes no sense.

619. There's a war going on.

620. We might have four more bodies tonight.

621. This is baltimore, we might have six.

622. I watched marvin taylor from the eastern

623. Get his asshole ripped today because he has no fucking clue.

624. I don't believe this.

625. We got top lieutenants talking about murders,

626. And we can't figure out just to shut up and take notes?

627. We got bodies on the ground, jimmy.

628. That's gotta matter for something.

629. No, if we're at cheese then we're close to prop joe,

630. And if we're close to joe, then we're close to stringer.

631. That has to matter.

632. Look, i was right there with you when we left stringer

633. On the street and it grinds me, too.

634. But the fact is, we didn't create this unit

635. Just to lock up dope dealers.

636. There's a narcotics unit downtown for that.

637. We're about violence.

638. Have been from the jump.

639. Barksdale was violent.

640. But right now, stringer's quiet,

641. And over on the eastside, we got bodies.

642. Jimmy, we got enough from the tap

643. To take a real good shot at cheese.

644. You put a murder case or two together,

645. You may be able to roll someone up

646. At proposition joe or stringer.

647. As far as bodies go, four's a big number.

648. Okay, then.

649. As of now, we use the phones to work these murders.

650. Yo quiero mucho menos pastillas de secoya en eso.

651. Y muy mas ancho un poco.

652. Si? Gracias.

653. - Yo, we bracin' up, son. - Huh?

654. Gather yourself, nigga. We gotta bead on dazz.

655. Be at neesey's crib in a hour.

656. Dazz be with neesey?

657. I thought she was your girl.

658. Neesey, huh? Got it.

659. Bring your whistle, in a hour, one.

660. Mount up.

661. Caroline, call qrt with that 20 and stay on the wire.

662. - We're on channel two. - Alright.

663. Yo, tri, what size fries you want?

664. What?

665. - Go! - Police!

666. - Search warrant! - Freeze!

667. Hands up! Down on the ground!

668. Put your hands up! Put your hands up!

669. Hands on your head!

670. Okay, mary tyler moore. Buck-naked.

671. Open the door, here i come,

672. Drop my attaché case down,

673. Bend her over, give it to her on the ottoman, and she's like,

674. "oh, rob! Oh, rob!"

675. Who's rob?

676. From the show.

677. Done.

678. Mary-kate and ashley, i don't want to say.

679. Just accept whatever pictures are on my mind right now.

680. Anybody else?

681. Yeah, dozerman's girl, what's her name?

682. She's baking a cake. Naked.

683. White flour splotches all over her fine brown skin.

684. I come in in a chef's hat, nothing else on,

685. Johnson out to here and say,

686. "that's no way to stir a batter.

687. Here, let me try to get—"

688. Hey, doze, what's up?

689. Done, now the guy.

690. This is a hard one for anybody to understand.

691. I mean it's got nothing to do with sex.

692. It's about...

693. Sympathy.

694. It's about giving a guy a break.

695. Yeah, okay, okay.

696. Gus triandos.

697. Who's gus triandos?

698. He was a catcher with the orioles back in the day.

699. My brother had his card,

700. Sorry lookin' motherfucker.

701. I mean, he looked like this little kid

702. Who got left at a bus station by his parents.

703. You know why?

704. Because he had to catch hoyt wilhelm's knuckleball.

705. Five fucking years, the worst gig in baseball.

706. It was like trying to catch a greased pig with wings.

707. He even told a reporter once "wilhelm nearly ruined me."

708. Gus triandos.

709. Big slow guy.

710. Good choice.

711. Go ahead, say it.

712. I know you want to say it.

713. Say what? There's nothing to say.

714. Nothing?

715. You put a lot of thought into it.

716. It's cool.

717. Okay.

718. Okay.

719. Tonight, three things.

720. Number one.

721. Keep your incident numbers sequential

722. Or it's gonna be a stone mess tomorrow.

723. Number two.

724. We'll be photographing evidence at the scene.

725. That means don't bag anything until you get the shot off.

726. And number three, don't embarrass yourselves.

727. Make sure your camera's loaded with film.

728. Okay, mount up.

729. So cheese, who's your dawg?

730. You my dawg.

731. I just wanna know who's your dawg, dawg.

732. What's this, some psychology, huh?

733. Yeah, okay, uh, "yo, please stop, stop.

734. I'll tell you everything i know."

735. C'mon, cheese.

736. Who's your dawg?

737. Oh, hell, no.

738. Y'all ain't layin' no bodies on me, man.

739. Lawyer time.

740. "he was my dawg, man.

741. I ain't sleep since i capped his ass.

742. Lookin' up at me all bloody and shit?

743. Had much love for me even then.

744. I ain't never gonna find another."

745. Man, y'all some cold-ass motherfuckers, man.

746. We got you on tape.

747. So what happened, cheese?

748. I thought he punked me, alright?

749. So i did what i had to do.

750. Which was?

751. Lit him up.

752. Well, he's talking anyway.

753. Well, what's done is done.

754. But, maybe we can help you on this.

755. How?

756. You gonna bring him back?

757. No, on the consequences.

758. Help us help you.

759. - What? - Maybe we can trade up.

760. Trade up for what, man?

761. For this? The fuck...

762. Proposition joe.

763. You give us prop joe and maybe we look at this whole thing

764. With dawg differently.

765. Now, why would i be talkin' about prop joe behind—

766. You know what, man?

767. I don't even know no prop joe.

768. Okay, dawg...

769. Which one of these is he?

770. Where's that body?

771. Where i left it most likely.

772. Warehouse on the east side.

773. And he still there?

774. Far as i know.

775. Unless the spca come around.

776. What?

777. Looks like they broke him.

778. I got to say.

779. You really showed me something on this.

780. What can i possibly add to that

781. Except i owe you one, cedric.

782. You ever have one of those

783. Have-your-cake- and-eat-it-too days?

784. I believe this could be my first.

785. Tell me something good.

786. We're charging him.

787. Improper disposal of an animal.

788. Discharging a firearm in city limits.

789. Animal cruelty, if you wanna run wild with it.

790. Go ahead. Call me a cocksucker.

791. You know you wanna.

792. Excuse me?

793. You know, i actually looked up the stats on gus triandos.

794. Power hitter, right?

795. Fuck the both of you.

796. Later, dawg.

797. Kiss my ass.

798. - Night, bunk. - Night.

799. Funny day.

800. I'm the new departmental pet for shutting down a drug war,

801. But i blew my wire for a dead terrier.

802. You remember how you said

803. You hoped today would be your first

804. Have-your-cake- and-eat-it-too day?

805. What about it?

806. Okay, gents.

807. You see the brake lights pump twice,

808. You know we got a clean hand-to-hand.

809. So i get in this morning and i'm looking at three phone messages

810. From buddy ferraro over at dpw

811. All assuring me that i'll have 20 radio cars back in service

812. At the end of the week.

813. Buddy and my old man go way back.

814. Made their first communion together at st. Leo's.

815. So...

816. What else do you need?

817. You didn't go to the mayor with it?

818. Did you get your cars?

819. Did anyone get fucked over it?

820. Or did your job just get a little easier?

821. I got 70 cops retiring at the end of the year

822. That i know of

823. And no money for an academy class.

824. The mayor fucked you

825. 'cause i know that money was in the budget.

826. The mayor delayed it till next summer.

827. Less troops, less salary, less bennies.

828. Even a six-month delay

829. Saves the city two, three million.

830. Let me talk to some people.

831. Yeah.

832. - Major colvin? - Yeah.

833. This is the com center. I'm sorry to call you, sir,

834. But we have an officer down in your district.

835. Which hospital?

836. I, uh,

837. Just got the lease, so...

838. Fucking solo cars!

839. I shoulda teamed him. I fucked up.

840. Dead-ass motherfucker's dead.

841. We catch up to him, he don't come in alive.

842. Right?

843. Nicked jugular, shattered jaw.

844. He'll live.

845. Give me one of those.

846. I just got back from shock-trauma.

847. You guys saved his ass getting him down as fast as you did.

848. So who we got for a suspect?

849. Number one male, white t-shirt,

850. Baggy jeans, tennis shoes.

851. In the wind, but we're locking it down out there.

852. So what's this i hear about the gun?

853. Doze tried to return fire, he dropped his piece.

854. Some fuck picks it up and books.

855. I mean i can't believe this shit.

856. I'll take it.

857. No, no, no...

858. It'll be nicer when i fix the place up.

859. Cedric...

860. I don't care.

861. No, tell him i'm cooked.

862. I just got done at the hospital, i'm all in.

863. Well, he was asking if you could maybe talk to the reporters.

864. No, he doesn't want me talking to reporters right now.

865. - Alright. - That would truly be unwise.

866. Alright, alright, i'll tell him.

867. Alright.

868. Bunny.

869. You look hellacious.

870. You got any coffee going in there?

871. You know what i was thinking?

872. Tonight's a good night.

873. Why?

874. Because my shot cop didn't die.

875. Then it hit me...

876. This is what makes a good night on my watch:

877. Absence of a negative.

878. That was a good night.

879. Here's the thing.

880. Six months from now?

881. I'm gone.

882. I put in my 30 and the only thing

883. That'll be left of me on that job is an

884. Eight-by-eleven framed picture in the western hallway.

885. But you know what?

886. The shit out there,

887. The city,

888. It's worse than when i first came on.

889. So what does that say about me?

890. About my life?

891. Aw, c'mon, man. You're talking about drugs.

892. That's a force of nature.

893. That's sweeping leaves on a windy day

894. Whoever the hell you are.

895. You fought the good fight.

896. Not a call since we gave it up to cheese.

897. What did you expect?

898. Attention.

899. Be seated.

900. Regarding officer dozerman,

901. His condition has been upgraded to guarded.

902. 'till he can receive visits,

903. He's been moved to the recovery unit.

904. As of this tour,

905. All hand-to-hand undercover buys of cds

906. Are suspended in the western district.

907. Somewhere

908. Back in the dawn of time,

909. This district had itself a civic dilemma

910. Of epic proportions.

911. The city council had just passed a law

912. That forbid alcoholic consumption in public places.

913. On the streets and on the corners.

914. But the corner is,

915. And it was and it always will be

916. The poor man's lounge.

917. It's where a man wants to be on a hot summer's night.

918. It's cheaper than a bar, catch a nice breeze,

919. Watch the girls go by.

920. But the law's the law

921. And the western cops rollin' by,

922. What were they gonna do?

923. If they arrested every dude out there

924. For tipping back a high life, there'd be no other time

925. For any other kind of police work.

926. And if they looked the other way,

927. They'd open themselves to all kinds of flaunting...

928. All kinds of disrespect.

929. Now, this is before my time when it happened,

930. But somewheres back in the '50s or '60s,

931. There was a small moment of goddamn genius

932. By some nameless smokehound

933. Who comes out the cut-rate one day

934. And on his way to the corner,

935. He slips that just-bought pint of elderberry

936. Into a paper bag.

937. A great moment of civic compromise.

938. That small wrinkled-ass paper bag

939. Allowed the corner boys to have their drink in peace

940. And gave us permission

941. To go and do police work.

942. The kind of police work

943. That's actually worth the effort,

944. That's worth actually

945. Taking a bullet for.

946. Dozerman,

947. He got shot last night trying to buy...

948. Three vials.

949. Three!

950. There's never been a paper bag

951. For drugs.

952. Until now.

953. If we ain't doing hand-to-hands, then what the fuck?

954. And that shit with the bag?

955. What the fuck is that?
