The Wire 2x2

1. 13 bodies, all female,

2. 11 white, two asian-looking,

3. All between the ages of maybe 20, 30, all very dead.

4. From eastern europe probably.

5. So, this is what, an accident?

6. Your air pipe's up top, crushed.

7. Probably during the off-load.

8. So, yeah, accidental, probably.

9. But that's his call, right?

10. Doctor...

11. Frazier.

12. Hey, how're we doing here?

13. How are we doing?

14. I mean, what are we doing?

15. What's the plan with all this?

16. Is this your first death investigation, officer?

17. Russell.

18. Yeah, first and onliest.

19. You got 13 for the price of one.

20. We're gonna start cutting this afternoon.

21. Anything you all got by way of identifications

22. Should come through my office.

23. What identification?

24. So far, we don't have a passport or visa in the bunch.

25. Whatever you find in this luggage, send it over,

26. Or they're all going to the anatomy board as jane does.

27. Who's the investigating agency?

28. If they were alive, they'd be illegals

29. And that would mean immigration.

30. But they're dead, so they're cargo.

31. Cargo, but no contraband.

32. There's nothing here to be seized as a customs violation.

33. - They're dead on port authority property, right? - Yeah.

34. - That's a state thing. - We'll eat it.

35. Hey, if it's accidental,

36. Then it's just about ids on the stowaways, right?

37. Good enough for me, brother.

38. No reason to open a full case folder that i can see.

39. Wait a minute. You cid guys are rolling out on this?

40. No crime, no investigation.

41. All you've got right here, officer russell,

42. Is a lot of paperwork.

43. And then there was one.

44. - Hey, you don't have to do this. - No?

45. No, anything you're gonna say, i already said to spiros.

46. You called him a greek asshole?

47. You think we wanted this?

48. I don't know what the fuck you people want and don't want.

49. All i know is i got a can full of young girls

50. Suffocating to death on my docks.

51. This was a mistake.

52. A mistake?

53. They fucking died in that can while this stupid son of a bitch

54. Sat there with his dick in his hands!

55. You know nothing.

56. We understand you're upset, frank.

57. We are upset too, okay?

58. Sergei was supposed to wait for our friend to come off the boat.

59. All right? Our friend was supposed to tell us

60. That there was no problem, you know, no customs.

61. - He did not come off the boat. - Why the fuck not?

62. This is what we're trying to find out. We don't know.

63. So, because you don't get the right message,

64. These girls are dying on my docks.

65. This is how it goes? On my docks, this happened!

66. I understand how you feel, but we're upset, too.

67. Everybody, we're all upset.

68. Nobody here wanted this.

69. Uncle frank, they're saying it wasn't on purpose.

70. You could've told me there were girls in that fucking can.

71. You could've told me so i didn't just shove 'em back

72. In the stacks like i did, right?

73. Why the fuck didn't you tell me

74. What was in that motherfucking can?

75. Now you want to know what's in the cans?

76. Before, you wanted to know nothing, now you ask.

77. Guns, okay?

78. Drugs, whores,

79. Vodka, bmws,

80. Beluga caviar...

81. Or bombs, maybe, hmm?

82. Bad terrorists with big nuclear bombs.

83. Boom.

84. I am kidding you, frank, it's a joke.

85. But you don't ask...

86. Because you don't want to know.

87. Tell the greek that next time he's got something breathing

88. In one of them cans, i need to know it.

89. I don't know.

90. Give him a couple of days, you know?

91. So, roberto been caught?

92. Yep, dea got him in new york.

93. Now, the shit makes some sense.

94. The money we sent for the last go-round came back.

95. All of it.

96. Damn, they ain't gonna touch us now?

97. Goddamn dominicans running around scared,

98. Acting like we the problem.

99. Roberto won't even see us.

100. String had to go to the lawyer up there.

101. They sayin' they have to be sure before they get back with us.

102. They seen you only got seven years, so...

103. So they think i'm a motherfucking snitch?

104. They ain't sayin' they thinkin'.

105. They just don't know how the feds got to roberto.

106. - So, we on the outside. - Yep.

107. Look...

108. We hangin' on to them projects with scraps.

109. Avon, you gotta have somebody for us.

110. A friend in atlanta,

111. Own a rim shop, name of vargus.

112. Have string fly down there tomorrow and meet him.

113. You seen d'angelo lately?

114. He on the j-tier, you know what i mean?

115. It's very difficult for me to get over there, you know?

116. So you ain't checkin' on him, and donette's out-and-about.

117. I don't know what's what anymore.

118. Now what's up with donette?

119. I leave messages, she ain't calling back.

120. Well, she ain't had her ass down here regular neither.

121. We need to tighten shit up, avon.

122. I mean, she should be bringing his son by every week.

123. Yeah, i'm gonna put string on that too.

124. After all he has done for us,

125. Dee needs to be cared for, avon.

126. - Promises were made. - I know.

127. He took the 20, he ain't complainin'.

128. But he is carryin' a lot of weight for this family.

129. And we keepin' him close.

130. Dee being cold toward me right now.

131. He in this motherfucker tryin' to make adjustments and shit.

132. - Adjustments? - Brianna.

133. You know damn well i ain't gonna let shit happen to him, right?

134. You got these off the boat?

135. What, in winter? In a couple of months.

136. Fringe benefit.

137. - Can't catch crabs in homicide, right? - Uh-uh.

138. Except maybe the occasional emergency room nurse

139. Every now and again.

140. Ooh. Need some air in here.

141. Leave it, leave it, leave it.

142. I don't need the hassle if rawls comes past.

143. You're not the run-of-the-mill kind of asshole,

144. Are you, jimmy?

145. You're a special kind of asshole.

146. I'm special, right.

147. How long did it take you to figure out the tides

148. Took that girl over the county line?

149. Three hours.

150. Three hours...

151. With your little harbor maps

152. And your tide tables just to stick rawls with an extra body.

153. Never mind that you just fucked cole with a stone "whodunit".

154. - That's collateral damage. - Yeah.

155. Are you gonna waste that crab gut?

156. You're a pussy, besides, jimmy.

157. We...

158. We need omar, jimmy.

159. You see this? 13 girls?

160. Yeah, i heard about it.

161. Who caught it?

162. It ain't ours.

163. Port police has jurisdiction over patapsco.

164. Ain't gonna be a murder either, so who gives a fuck?

165. Listen, jimmy, i ain't got no case on bird

166. Unless that crazy motherfucker omar testifies.

167. You hear me?

168. It's time you show bunk the love.

169. You want love, you come and sit on my lap.

170. Shit.

171. So, this pretty motherfucker comes over and tells me

172. The customs seal got broke on the dock and i'm responsible.

173. Can you fuckin' believe that?

174. I mean, i seen the goddamn thing on the crane,

175. The seal's already broke.

176. - Who got to it? - The crew probably.

177. Some goddamn ordinary seaman.

178. What was it?

179. Vodka, i think.

180. I ain't sayin' we didn't squeeze a case or two, but fuck it,

181. Frank, the can was already opened.

182. Come on, tommy, i didn't come down to the union hall today

183. On the back of no bread truck?

184. I swear, frank, we grabbed a couple cases at the end,

185. After everyone of them sailor boys damn near raped it.

186. A couple cases?

187. Yeah, it was four. Yeah.

188. What the fuck is up with the police?

189. What?

190. They're strokin' tickets on every fuckin' car.

191. "rear tag not entirely visible"?

192. You got the tow-bar set high.

193. "emergency access blocked," are you kidding me?

194. We've been parking on the side of the building

195. Since the fuckin' ships had sails.

196. Come on, pal, what the fuck?

197. It ain't me, it's my boss.

198. Who's your boss?

199. Valchek, southeast district.

200. - Stan valchek? - The district commander, yeah.

201. That sawed-off piece of shit.

202. Why the hell is he fucking with us?

203. Hey listen, whatever it's about,

204. You definitely got the man's attention.

205. 'cause word comes down this morning from my shift lieutenant,

206. We're supposed to ride past your union hall

207. Twice a day and paper cars.

208. You work for a gaping asshole.

209. More than one, actually.

210. You know we're not gonna put up with this shit, right?

211. You know we're gonna go downtown on it.

212. Take it all the way to the mayor's office,

213. I can't blame you, but leave me out of it.

214. It's chain-of-command.

215. I mean, i gotta live with the son of a bitch too, right?

216. Man, you can't tell me this place ain't clean.

217. You talk when i say you can.

218. Who told you to decorate, nigger?

219. Cell look pretty fucked up to me.

220. - What you callin' clean? - Man, i ain't done shit.

221. Don't say that to me, motherfucker, huh?

222. Pets, too?

223. No, no, you see, they plastic.

224. They got little motors and all, man.

225. Clean this shit before lock-down.

226. That's four in a row, bitch!

227. Man on p.A.: Lock-down in 10 minutes.

228. Wait here, this won't take long.

229. What the fuck do you want from me?

230. He's an e-rate and you're a g.

231. He wants the ship, he gets the ship.

232. Seniority, mims, seniority.

233. There ain't no union without it, brother.

234. Your sweetheart's out there.

235. Who?

236. I gotta go, mims. I got to.

237. Kinda empty in here.

238. Everyone's working.

239. Ha, you gettin' the message?

240. The message?

241. I had people working on a window for the nave up st. Casimir's

242. Since easter, you know that?

243. I took money from half a dozen different people,

244. Told 'em where it was gonna go.

245. You tell father lewandowski?

246. I was gonna surprise him.

247. Yeah, you surprised everybody.

248. Now there's one window too many, right?

249. Well, here's the thing, father lew says,

250. He could take another window in the rectory

251. On the second floor.

252. Good for you.

253. No, good for you, frank.

254. You don't want my finger in your eye,

255. You better do what's right here.

256. What's right, huh?

257. What's right would be for you to come down here to my house

258. Like a decent human being and ask a common courtesy.

259. But that's not you, it's not your way.

260. My old man always said you were a half-ass punk

261. Over at holy redeemer as a kid

262. And my sister said you were a pain in the ass pest

263. At all them cyo dances when none of the girls would even look at you.

264. And damn near everyone down the point said when you got your badge

265. It was too much for anybody named valchek

266. To have even a patrolman's drag, and sure enough,

267. You been an official asshole every day since.

268. Fuck you and your window!

269. Where you gonna be?

270. Well, i'm gonna go find some lunch somewhere, maybe.

271. - Gimme an hour, yeah? - Yeah.

272. Hey, what the fuck is this?

273. A knot.

274. Why don't you just do bunny ears?

275. So, what else we got?

276. Cosmetics, clothes, bedrolls, that's it.

277. Here's a letter though.

278. A letter, what language?

279. Who knows? Same backwards-ass writing, though.

280. It's like russian or something, i'm telling you.

281. Yeah, can't figure the name or the address,

282. But the stamp says "magyar" on it.

283. Where's "magyar"?

284. The hell do i look like, rand mcnally?

285. Hey, which one of your detectives

286. Caught all the dead girls?

287. Detectives? They're at the bar already.

288. These yours?

289. They chalked it up as an accidental

290. And dumped the paperwork on us.

291. She found 'em, she writes on it.

292. I'm mcnulty, city marine unit.

293. Beatrice russell.

294. You got any ids yet?

295. No visas or passports.

296. A few scraps of paper, but nothing to make sense of.

297. Russian alphabet on most of it.

298. You just curious?

299. - Yeah. - Why?

300. Day before yesterday, i fished out a jane doe from near the bridge.

301. There's no missing person report on file.

302. We got 14 bedrolls and 13 bodies.

303. Mine was a murder.

304. A murder? You're kidding me.

305. We got some photos if you wanna take a look.

306. I called down the morgue this morning,

307. The only thing they can say is the dental work isn't local.

308. Overseas, they think.

309. - Is that your girl? - Think so.

310. Looks better here.

311. You got her in the water day before yesterday out by the bridge?

312. Yeah, 0900 hours, by the fort armistead dock.

313. Why would you have a murdered girl in the water

314. And the rest of them are suffocating in a can at patapsco?

315. What went wrong?

316. Air pipe up top got crushed.

317. Happened when cargo shifted around, most likely.

318. They had cargo up front of the container

319. With a false back after about 25 feet.

320. You had cartons stacked in front,

321. But a tight passage to a small door in the false wall.

322. Opens from the outside only.

323. They're in here the whole trip?

324. Probably not.

325. Once they're at sea, there's usually someone

326. In the crew who's in on it, you know, a shepherd.

327. He let's 'em out to eat, move around,

328. Use the bathroom, whatever.

329. They were clawing at the wall for air.

330. That's what the medical examiner said anyway.

331. Where's the air pipe?

332. That's the hole.

333. Pipe's up top.

334. - You get a lot of stowaways? - Some.

335. Usually it's customs or ins that finds 'em.

336. Most are dominicans or haitians,

337. Or from that part of the world, anyway.

338. Not so much from europe?

339. A bit more since 9/11, actually.

340. I think because people can't get in on visas anymore

341. Like they used to. There you go.

342. Usually, if the shepherd is doing his job,

343. He tries to put a can like this on bottom of a stack

344. So they can pop it and the girls just walk out

345. On the floor of the hold.

346. Where was this one?

347. - Huh. - What?

348. That look right to you?

349. What do you mean?

350. You said you were with the marine unit?

351. Yeah.

352. What does the marine unit have to do with a bunch

353. Of dead girls in a can?

354. Not a thing.

355. What do you want me to do?

356. You can go to father lew,

357. Ask him to give sobotka back his money.

358. Switch the windows, maybe.

359. Stash, you ever in your life seen a priest give money back?

360. The guy pays for a window, he gets a window.

361. I thought you had suction.

362. At city hall, i got suction.

363. Down annapolis, i got suction.

364. But who but the pope has any drag with the cardinal?

365. Get over it, stash.

366. How the fuck's he get that kinda money anyway?

367. Now, that's a good question.

368. I mean, the whole ibs can't have 1500 guys left in this town,

369. And they're ain't 100 checkers.

370. They got the car ships coming in,

371. That roll-on-roll-off cargo is keeping them afloat.

372. That's all they got?

373. Pretty much.

374. Past six months, ibs hired bruce dibiago's people

375. To lobby for them down in annapolis,

376. And they've been good with the political contributions.

377. They're throwing around a lot of cash.

378. - How can they? - You tell me.

379. Dibiago does not come cheap, stash.

380. This is real money we're talking.

381. You know what i think?

382. I think francis sobotka's into some dirt.

383. You're the cop, not me, stanoosh.

384. "the granary"?

385. So, i hear burrell's gonna be the next police commissioner.

386. Yeah, i've seen worse.

387. See, if it's crushed by another container,

388. It should've been one single movement,

389. Maybe two if something shifts then shifts back again.

390. This looks like someone has been pounding on it in a bunch of spots.

391. See?

392. Before i rule it,

393. I wanna go down with a metallurgist to be sure,

394. But yeah, from the look of it...

395. You just bought yourself 13 homicides.

396. Congratulations.

397. If the commissioner goes down to washington, it's you, right?

398. That's for the mayor to decide.

399. I'd have to clear the council, too.

400. Well, if the mayor wants you, that's not much of a problem.

401. You been around as long as me, you make a few enemies.

402. What, the first district guys?

403. They're not gonna start nothing.

404. They're pushing shipley.

405. See, that's racist.

406. You know it personally offends me

407. That anybody would reach down past you

408. To elevate some colonel just because he happens to be white.

409. You know what i'm gonna do?

410. I'm gonna get on the phone and call my friends at the hall.

411. That'll bring the first district in line.

412. That's very kind. And what, if anything,

413. Is there that i can do for you, major valchek?

414. Funny you should ask. I need a detail.

415. Cid people mostly.

416. Though i can spare some bodies out of my district too.

417. What for?

418. I got some guys in the southeast that are showing a lot of money.

419. Port guys, longshoremen.

420. Ibs?

421. Oh, i'm not talking about going after the whole union.

422. Just a couple of guys in one local that look fat.

423. Drugs, maybe or the usual thieving.

424. Frank sobotka, you heard the name?

425. No.

426. And i'm not saying the problem even goes past him.

427. What's he to you, stan?

428. - To me? - Uh-huh.

429. He's an asshole.

430. Six men for six weeks.

431. Rawls will pick 'em.

432. You ordered more than you ate.

433. It's cold out here.

434. Cedric, i shouldn't have brought it up again, i'm sorry.

435. You're right.

436. You're always right.

437. I'm just saying you have to be realistic.

438. You did what you did and now you are where you are.

439. In the basement.

440. If they buried you any deeper,

441. You'd be under the damn building.

442. Burrell won't be there forever.

443. Burrell is going to be the next police commissioner

444. And you know it.

445. But you've got the law degree.

446. And with the police experience, half a dozen firms

447. Would think you're a prize.

448. You've got options.

449. Just because they don't—

450. You're right.

451. You're right.

452. I'll put in my papers.

453. Hey, who wants breakfast?

454. Christ, it's about time.

455. Lucky's was closed. I had to go to the metro.

456. I thought mutt be working northpoint today.

457. He like them ro-ro ships.

458. Naw, his wife is having some kinda operation,

459. So, he gave back his hours.

460. Who got 'em?

461. New charles works for mutt.

462. Yo, zig. You workin' today?

463. No, came down here to have breakfast

464. With you dupa-faced fucks.

465. Most important goddamn meal of the goddamn day, right?

466. Set 'em up, dolores, ziggy's thirsty.

467. That's right, i'm thirsty.

468. Hey, you know what?

469. Bottoms up, you ugly whores.

470. - Yo, nick. - What's up?

471. Come here.

472. I got a line on something.

473. Oh, yeah?

474. You know white mike from down curtis bay?

475. Yeah.

476. He's gonna stake me to a package.

477. A package?

478. Dope, nicky, dope.

479. I got work today, zig.

480. Yeah, and i'm gonna make as much money not working,

481. You see what i'm saying?

482. So, why the fuck you coming to me?

483. I want you to come in on it with me.

484. You bring a little cash as money-down,

485. My man might give us a bigger package.

486. We turn it around, we both get paid.

487. All right, ship's in, gentlemen.

488. - Fuck that shit, zig. - Time to work!

489. Nicky, come on, man...

490. - Ott, can i ride with you? - Yeah.

491. Will ya think about it?

492. Hey, delores, can i get another shot?

493. What's up?

494. Dwi checkpoint.

495. Step out of the car for a breathalyzer.

496. Who the— it's 8:00—

497. It's 8:00 in the goddamn morning.

498. Who the—

499. Who the fuck gets drunk at 8:00 in the morning?

500. Sir.

501. Bill, i'm not arguing that the jurisdiction's not technically ours.

502. Patapsco's definitely port authority property

503. And the port police have the jurisdiction.

504. That's not in dispute here.

505. Good.

506. But they're not equipped for a death investigation.

507. I mean, you dump 13 bodies on them,

508. You're dumping them on us.

509. Msp is gonna have to pick up that slack,

510. Overburdened as we are.
