1. Hey, now.Copy !req
2. We called earlier, they said you were up...Copy !req
3. and by the time we get here,
you're back asleep.Copy !req
4. - Been there long?
- No.Copy !req
5. 20 minutes.Copy !req
6. You know, we didn't want to
exactly disturb you.Copy !req
7. I'm bored, is all.Copy !req
8. Yeah, but still.Copy !req
9. So, what you got for me?Copy !req
10. - Spreads?
- Yeah.Copy !req
11. Little Man. For sure.Copy !req
12. That's good. Are you able to write?Copy !req
13. Okay. Number two.Copy !req
14. I can make Little Man,
because he's in the front...Copy !req
15. trying to snatch the cash off the dashboard.Copy !req
16. But the other one, he's outside in the dark.Copy !req
17. - So...
- So, you know, it's okay.Copy !req
18. Is there anyone here that you do recognize?Copy !req
19. Sure. Wee-Bey.Copy !req
20. All right.Copy !req
21. Let me tell you where we're
coming from with the shooters.Copy !req
22. We tracked their escape route,
and Landsman came up with their hoodies.Copy !req
23. Now, DNA matched...Copy !req
24. human hair from one of the hoodies
to Wee-Bey.Copy !req
25. Freamon, he tracked
a call from the pay phone...Copy !req
26. near the scene, to Stringer Bell's pager.Copy !req
27. Now, the caller was
using Bey's beeper code.Copy !req
28. Crime lab, they lift a print...Copy !req
29. off a soda can near that phone,
and that matches Little Man.Copy !req
30. You know, so, you know, I'm saying...Copy !req
31. Okay, hear me out.Copy !req
32. There's a downside here.Copy !req
33. We don't have the guns...Copy !req
34. no prints from the scene, no witnesses.Copy !req
35. But worse, we're going to be dealing
with a Baltimore city jury...Copy !req
36. and a good man is hard to find in this town.Copy !req
37. Twelve of them together, especially.Copy !req
38. An ID of both your shooters...Copy !req
39. will play a whole lot easier come trial.Copy !req
40. Yeah.Copy !req
41. Sometimes things just got to play hard.Copy !req
42. We got everyone on our list except C.C.O.Copy !req
43. We hit his mama's house...Copy !req
44. and she says that he went up
to Wabash for some court date.Copy !req
45. You can get on the computer
and see if any of the Sheriff's deputies...Copy !req
46. can snatch him up in some courtroom.Copy !req
47. Yeah. No, we got Ronnie Moe.Copy !req
48. I'm looking at him
go in the jail van right now.Copy !req
49. All right.Copy !req
50. - Fished our limit. Let's go home.
- "Sir."Copy !req
51. - Huh?
- "Let's go home, sir."Copy !req
52. You're looking at
a soon-to-be-made sergeant.Copy !req
53. So what I'm saying is,
when we're around the troops...Copy !req
54. you got to get used to
showing the proper respect.Copy !req
55. So, "Let's go home, sir." All right?Copy !req
56. What's the count?Copy !req
57. So far we've picked up 12.
That leaves seven on the wing.Copy !req
58. Anything worthwhile?Copy !req
59. Some phone numbers that match,
scraps of nicknames, not much else.Copy !req
60. We need something now.Copy !req
61. They'll shut us down unless we come up
with something fresh to run with right now.Copy !req
62. The wires are dead.
The bug in the club is useless.Copy !req
63. They're moving out of there
even as we got up on them.Copy !req
64. - To where?
- No clue.Copy !req
65. But they're going to have to set up again.Copy !req
66. Either Barksdale moves
to reset his distribution...Copy !req
67. or he gives up the towers.Copy !req
68. - If not Avon, then Stringer.
- And why not Avon?Copy !req
69. With no priors, he's out
two hours after the bail review.Copy !req
70. What we put on Barksdale
barely makes him break stride.Copy !req
71. Okay, so we get a hint of
where they're setting back up.Copy !req
72. We ask the State's Attorney for a new bug...Copy !req
73. maybe even a wire if we get onto a phone.Copy !req
74. Not while the deputy breathes air.Copy !req
75. We'll be reassigned
before you finish typing up your affidavit.Copy !req
76. How about the feds?Copy !req
77. You think the Deputy's
going to let you take this mess federal?Copy !req
78. Why does the Deputy need to know?Copy !req
79. McNulty, you are a piece of work.Copy !req
80. McNulty.Copy !req
81. Yeah?Copy !req
82. No shit.Copy !req
83. No fucking shit.Copy !req
84. It's Rhonda Pearlman.Copy !req
85. She just got a call from an assistant
public defender in North Jersey...Copy !req
86. who claims to represent
a man by the name of D'Angelo Barksdale.Copy !req
87. Meet me in Homicide. Bring a tape recorder.Copy !req
88. No drug lawyers? No Levy?Copy !req
89. - Case got some legs on her, don't she?
- Don't she?Copy !req
90. Quarter of a million dollars bail.
You believe that shit?Copy !req
91. It hurts to even show that kind of money.Copy !req
92. - Where Levy at? He ain't at the club, is he?
- No, club's out. We can't talk there no more.Copy !req
93. - Come on, man, let's get out of here.
- What's up, baby?Copy !req
94. So, this is it?Copy !req
95. Look, before you go anyplace else,
before you talk anyplace else...Copy !req
96. we got to think this through.Copy !req
97. We're up to almost 20 arrests at last count.Copy !req
98. And if you look at the probable cause,
they all read just like yours:Copy !req
99. Information from a confidential source.Copy !req
100. Don't this seem way too much
for one snitch?Copy !req
101. I agree. My gut tells me a wire.Copy !req
102. Either a phone or two,
or maybe something in a room somewhere.Copy !req
103. Talked to your nephew
on the phone about the Jersey thing?Copy !req
104. No. Of course not, man. No phones.Copy !req
105. When I talk to him, I talk to him face-to-face,
in my office, in the back of the club.Copy !req
106. - Fuck.
- It's good you moved out of there.Copy !req
107. I don't know, man.
I mean, if they got a mike up in there...Copy !req
108. they got you and me saying all kind of shit.Copy !req
109. That reminds me. He said he'd be in tonight.Copy !req
110. - Thing is, they take you and leave me?
- That's what's fucking me up, too, man.Copy !req
111. Look, we'll know soon enough,
as soon as I start pressing for discovery.Copy !req
112. What do you want to do
about the people they locked up?Copy !req
113. - We got to pull them.
- That's showing a lot of money.Copy !req
114. If we don't,
we run the risk of making them enemies.Copy !req
115. Speaking of which,
where are you with your nephew?Copy !req
116. Is he going to see the light or what?Copy !req
117. Let me tell you something, man.
He family, all right?Copy !req
118. He not going to buck.Copy !req
119. A day or two in the New Jersey bullpen,
he gonna be crying...Copy !req
120. waiting for bail money like the rest of them.Copy !req
121. All right.Copy !req
122. So, let's run the money through the families,
that'll hide it some.Copy !req
123. - And don't use the same bondsman.
- All right.Copy !req
124. Look, gentlemen, I know it's early...Copy !req
125. I want you to start thinking
about who was charged...Copy !req
126. and what kind of time they can do.Copy !req
127. One of the ways to limit your exposure
is what's called a structured plea.Copy !req
128. That means that you're going to
have to deliver your people...Copy !req
129. all of them, down to a man.Copy !req
130. I saw your girl today, for the idents.Copy !req
131. How's she doing?Copy !req
132. Okay, I guess.Copy !req
133. She's out of the ICU.Copy !req
134. Moving slow, but moving, you know?Copy !req
135. Jimmy, you ain't been to see her?Copy !req
136. No. I couldn't go in.Copy !req
137. This ain't about you, right?Copy !req
138. I get back from Jersey, I will.Copy !req
139. I will.Copy !req
140. You know, Cole and me,
we showed her the spreads.Copy !req
141. Picked out Little Man, no problem.Copy !req
142. Wouldn't go for Wee-Bey.
So, I tried the fat finger.Copy !req
143. Damn near down on my knees begging her...Copy !req
144. to make this play easier in court.
You know what she said?Copy !req
145. "Sometimes things got to play hard."Copy !req
146. Real police.Copy !req
147. Oh, yeah.Copy !req
148. - What the fuck did you do to her?
- I don't know.Copy !req
149. You two in the same car
going to make for a long-ass drive to Jersey.Copy !req
150. Shit.Copy !req
151. Damn, man, it's just too still in here.Copy !req
152. You know what? We can—Copy !req
153. This place will be fine.Copy !req
154. All we really got to do
is put a little safe in here someplace...Copy !req
155. and let them know the count
comes here from now on.Copy !req
156. Period.Copy !req
157. Damn, boy, when y'all change up, y'all—Copy !req
158. Y'all that paranoid?
You ain't even been up in there before.Copy !req
159. I'm telling you, sis, this shit is different.Copy !req
160. We are not going to talk about
nothing indoors. It's a new day.Copy !req
161. Thing is, man,
we got to get back on our feet.Copy !req
162. You know, I mean, the longer we hold off...Copy !req
163. the harder it's going to be
to maintain the towers.Copy !req
164. You want to get it back up,
you lean to me and String here.Copy !req
165. - No, I ain't down yet.
- You need to step back.Copy !req
166. She's right, bro.
You can't take a second chance here.Copy !req
167. You know what I'm saying?Copy !req
168. Until you fixed,
sis going to handle that money...Copy !req
169. I'm going to handle the products.Copy !req
170. - We're here for you.
- All right.Copy !req
171. But you tell Roberto,
he got to make it a serious smoker.Copy !req
172. I want them motherfucking fiends
in the projects...Copy !req
173. I want them dropping like flies.
You feel me?Copy !req
174. You send out the word,
you let them know we ain't dead yet.Copy !req
175. - What about my nephew?
- Don't fret.Copy !req
176. Give me a chance to get with Roberto,
and I'll get up to Dee.Copy !req
177. Do what needs doing.Copy !req
178. Tell him I'm sorry for putting him
out there like that.Copy !req
179. And that I'm going to make it up to him.Copy !req
180. You going to make it up.Copy !req
181. Most def.Copy !req
182. But again, I want to make it clear...Copy !req
183. that all of this cooperation
is contingent on a commitment...Copy !req
184. that my client finds acceptable.Copy !req
185. Failing that...Copy !req
186. - everything said in here, stays in here.
- Damn straight.Copy !req
187. I'm sure a proffer in Maryland
plays much the same in Jersey, counselor.Copy !req
188. And I do agree that with regard to matters...Copy !req
189. involving drug trafficking,
your client has been helpful.Copy !req
190. He's indicated a willingness to testify
that he was a lieutenant...Copy !req
191. in Avon Barksdale's
drug distribution organization...Copy !req
192. sold large quantities of drugs for his uncle.Copy !req
193. Delivered money,
attended organizational meetings...Copy !req
194. and on one occasion made a trip
to New York on the behest of his uncle.Copy !req
195. All of which corroborates
much of what we already know.Copy !req
196. What else is there?Copy !req
197. The murders.Copy !req
198. Man, why do you keep on that?Copy !req
199. I already told you...Copy !req
200. I don't know nothing about
that witness being killed.Copy !req
201. Which witness?Copy !req
202. Remember her?Copy !req
203. Jesus.Copy !req
204. - They did her?
- Yeah, about the same time they did the boy.Copy !req
205. All of them bodies.Copy !req
206. - They covering up, man.
- Yeah, that's what we think.Copy !req
207. - No loose ends.
- I can understand the guard.Copy !req
208. She got paid, so she had to go.Copy !req
209. Orlando, he knew too much,
got to snitching, so he had to go.Copy !req
210. But then there's the kid...Copy !req
211. Wallace.Copy !req
212. But I need to go past Argyle Street tonight.
Check in with Wallace.Copy !req
213. Wallace?Copy !req
214. He off the hook
since we helped the tower crew...Copy !req
215. get that stick-up boy.Copy !req
216. I'm telling you, man, Wallace is bugging.Copy !req
217. Don't hardly even come out
of that room no more.Copy !req
218. - Now, why he be like that?
- I'm thinking he might be getting high.Copy !req
219. - Wallace?
- The boy's scaring me with his shit.Copy !req
220. - All right, holler at me later.
- That'll work.Copy !req
221. You got that shit on tape?Copy !req
222. - God!
- His name is Brandon Wright.Copy !req
223. Burned him, broke fingers,
gouged an eye out, all kinds of fun.Copy !req
224. Wallace was the one who saw.Copy !req
225. He saw the boy.Copy !req
226. But he really didn't
think about what they'd do.Copy !req
227. You must have known.
You were standing there by that pay phone.Copy !req
228. - You knew.
- What was I going to do?Copy !req
229. I don't call String, word get back uptown,
what's going to happen then?Copy !req
230. So, you told Wallace to wait,
then you called Stringer...Copy !req
231. and Stringer, he gathered the troops.Copy !req
232. Yeah.Copy !req
233. And down at the Greek's,
they got Wallace to point the finger, right?Copy !req
234. Then they went in like cops with handcuffs,
so they could take their time on Brandon.Copy !req
235. They dropped the body where we'd see it.Copy !req
236. "Send a message to the 'jects," they said.Copy !req
237. Wallace...Copy !req
238. he couldn't handle that.Copy !req
239. After seeing that, he wanted to get out...Copy !req
240. go back to school.Copy !req
241. We even joked about it,
him being 16 and all...Copy !req
242. needing to go start back
over again as a freshman.Copy !req
243. About a week ago, my uncle and String,
they called me down to the club.Copy !req
244. Stringer, he's all worried about Wallace,
and I told him.Copy !req
245. I said, "Wallace ain't no snitch."Copy !req
246. Plus, he's out the fucking game.Copy !req
247. I told him that.Copy !req
248. But I needed to do more.Copy !req
249. I should've done more...Copy !req
250. but I didn't, and, fuck, that's on me.Copy !req
251. Any idea who they sent at Wallace?Copy !req
252. Come on, Dee, wild guess.Copy !req
253. Man, I don't know, could've been anybody.
You know, shooters come cheap.Copy !req
254. I don't think so. Not in the Pit.Copy !req
255. Not in his crib.
I counted seven beds when I was up there.Copy !req
256. - Where were the young'uns?
- Look, if I knew, I would tell you.Copy !req
257. All right? I swear to God, I would tell you.Copy !req
258. They've charged with Orlando
and the undercover cop...Copy !req
259. but we're still hunting.Copy !req
260. Him, he in Philly.Copy !req
261. - How you know?
- I know 'cause I dropped him there.Copy !req
262. Where?Copy !req
263. I don't know, a corner, North end,
I don't know where he be staying.Copy !req
264. Did Wee-Bey say anything
to you about the shootings?Copy !req
265. We don't talk shop in the car.
It's a rule we got.Copy !req
266. So, is that it?Copy !req
267. Your client must realize
that any agreement...Copy !req
268. is dependent on his full cooperation.Copy !req
269. There ain't nothing else.Copy !req
270. Deidre.Copy !req
271. Tap, tap, tap.Copy !req
272. She was one of my uncle's girls.Copy !req
273. But we got people who put you with her
the night she's killed.Copy !req
274. Yeah, I didn't know
that he was going to do her.Copy !req
275. I swear. They played me.Copy !req
276. How so?Copy !req
277. My uncle gave me an eight-ball of coke.Copy !req
278. Told me to take it over there to her.Copy !req
279. I was surprised, 'cause, you know,
I thought he dumped her.Copy !req
280. But he said, no, it wasn't like that no more.Copy !req
281. So, he had Wee-Bey take me over there.Copy !req
282. You know, I walked up,
knocked on the door...Copy !req
283. she came to the door, all naked and shit,
with this little-ass robe on.Copy !req
284. So, she's your uncle's girl,
but she comes to the door for you naked?Copy !req
285. She used to do that shit
with me all the time, man.Copy !req
286. Teasing. You know how girls do.
Maybe you don't.Copy !req
287. I don't know.Copy !req
288. Anyway, I'm like,
"Ain't you going to let me come in?"Copy !req
289. She says "No,"
because she got to get ready...Copy !req
290. for my uncle to come by later.Copy !req
291. So, I give her the coke.Copy !req
292. She laughs about how she's going to
put that shit on ice, for later on.Copy !req
293. Refrigerate it.Copy !req
294. I don't know shit about no refrigerator.
Like I said, I didn't go in.Copy !req
295. I turned around,
started walking back to the truck...Copy !req
296. and I heard this shot.Copy !req
297. Wee-Bey, he come running back with
this big-ass.45 he liked to use so much.Copy !req
298. Tells me how he was tapping
on the window, real soft.Copy !req
299. How with the lights on,
she had to walk all the way up...Copy !req
300. because she couldn't see
what was on the outside.Copy !req
301. And when she gets up
to the window and looks out...Copy !req
302. You did good, D'Angelo.Copy !req
303. Yeah, you did.Copy !req
304. Y'all don't understand, man.Copy !req
305. Y'all don't get it.Copy !req
306. You grow up in this shit.Copy !req
307. My grandfather was Butch Stamford.Copy !req
308. You know who Butch Stamford
was in this town?Copy !req
309. All my people, man,
my father, my uncles, my cousins...Copy !req
310. it's just what we do.Copy !req
311. You just live with this shit...Copy !req
312. until you can't breathe no more.Copy !req
313. I swear to God,
I was courtside for eight months...Copy !req
314. and I was freer in jail than I was at home.Copy !req
315. What are you looking for?Copy !req
316. I want it to go away.Copy !req
317. - I can't—
- I want what Wallace wanted.Copy !req
318. I want to start over.Copy !req
319. That's what I want. I don't care where.Copy !req
320. Anywhere. I don't give a fuck.Copy !req
321. I just want to go somewhere
where I can breathe like regular folk.Copy !req
322. You give me that...Copy !req
323. and I'll give you them.Copy !req
324. No, that's great. Really great.Copy !req
325. No, that's great. Really great.Copy !req
326. Yeah.Copy !req
327. That's our move.Copy !req
328. Okay.Copy !req
329. We broke it open tonight. Wide open.Copy !req
330. I'm bringing this case in big.Copy !req
331. So, this squares things with Burrell, right?Copy !req
332. To hell with the man.Copy !req
333. But I think we might have enough
to reach out to the feds...Copy !req
334. try to run this thing through them.Copy !req
335. Cedric.Copy !req
336. He knows about the money, Marla.Copy !req
337. He's known for a long while.Copy !req
338. Fact is, I wouldn't be surprised
if it's why he picked me for this case.Copy !req
339. What does he... What are you going to—Copy !req
340. He's got me if he wants me.
Thing is, I don't think he wants me.Copy !req
341. Too much at stake.Copy !req
342. Too much mess.Copy !req
343. Kind of like this case.Copy !req
344. I have to admit it, Jimmy,
this is a great case.Copy !req
345. Not just because of Greggs,
because it goes to that and answers that...Copy !req
346. but because of how deep it goes.Copy !req
347. I mean, the murders, the money—Copy !req
348. Jesus, I feel like I've been drunk
ever since that kid started talking to us.Copy !req
349. You okay to drive?Copy !req
350. I can drop you home.
You can pick up your car tomorrow.Copy !req
351. No, I'm good.
I'm great, this was fucking great!Copy !req
352. You want to try to go federal with this?
I am up for it.Copy !req
353. I get cross-designated as an AUSA,
and we can really run with it, you know?Copy !req
354. Career fucking case.Copy !req
355. Anyway...Copy !req
356. Ronnie, the thing at...Copy !req
357. Levy's the other day, I was...Copy !req
358. I was—Copy !req
359. Jesus, Ronnie, not here.
What are you doing?Copy !req
360. Like you never did it
in the headquarters garage before?Copy !req
361. Jesus, Mary and Joseph.Copy !req
362. Look what just walked in
without a fucking escort.Copy !req
363. Downtown Roy Brown, the living legend...Copy !req
364. in his own mind.Copy !req
365. Uptown Lester Freamon.Copy !req
366. Fuck me, how long's it been?Copy !req
367. Your retirement party, wasn't it?
And this is retirement?Copy !req
368. Yeah. Nice fucking digs?Copy !req
369. I asked my supervisor when
I'll see a little sunlight.Copy !req
370. Runt cocksucker says,
"When your unit turns a profit."Copy !req
371. But enough of my joy.Copy !req
372. What do you guys need?Copy !req
373. We need a trap and trace,
but not in Maryland.Copy !req
374. - Pennsylvania, Philly.
- You got to go through them.Copy !req
375. We try that, we lose a week,
they tell us it can't be done...Copy !req
376. then another week to okay our subpoena.Copy !req
377. It's a little more complicated
than just a straight-up trace.Copy !req
378. We actually need a list of phones in Philly
that called this number in the past week.Copy !req
379. - What's the number?
- Drug lawyer, downtown office.Copy !req
380. Thought Billing would be the place to look.Copy !req
381. If we can do it, and I'm not saying we can...Copy !req
382. it's going to be a fucking week, maybe two.Copy !req
383. Thanks, Roy.Copy !req
384. Lester, isn't this supposed to be the time...Copy !req
385. you tell me how
all-fired fucking important this is?Copy !req
386. The Philly number gives us the mope
who shot that female undercover.Copy !req
387. I'm telling you, Fitz, it's the perfect case.Copy !req
388. - You'll love it.
- It sounds great.Copy !req
389. But like I said, Jimmy,
we're not fishing for drug cases anymore.Copy !req
390. Try DEA.Copy !req
391. No, that field office is too close to our CID.Copy !req
392. We go there, our bosses know it
before a meeting is scheduled.Copy !req
393. Your bosses don't know you're doing this?Copy !req
394. Who'll be coming?Copy !req
395. Me, a detective name of Freamon,
and Daniels.Copy !req
396. I can speak for Daniels, brother.
He's played this thing out with real heart.Copy !req
397. Come on, set something up.Copy !req
398. All right.Copy !req
399. Could I get 10 copies?Copy !req
400. - 10 copies?
- 10, right.Copy !req
401. No problems?Copy !req
402. No.Copy !req
403. No?Copy !req
404. All right, man, I'll get at you.Copy !req
405. You locked that door, right?Copy !req
406. Yeah? All right, so listen.
It's not street-ready, all right?Copy !req
407. So, everybody got to work
on their own cut and vial up.Copy !req
408. Now, listen to me,
tell them to get this straight.Copy !req
409. Three parts of this, all right?
To one of raw, all right?Copy !req
410. And that's how we gonna do
until we get the new stash.Copy !req
411. And I want you to put the word out there
that we're back up.Copy !req
412. Understand me?Copy !req
413. We're back up.Copy !req
414. It's a good target.Copy !req
415. You guys have a pretty good case here.Copy !req
416. Look at the violence alone.Copy !req
417. There's at least a dozen murders,
including state's witnesses.Copy !req
418. If you can help us squeeze the Barksdale kid
into a witness protection program...Copy !req
419. we can run wild with this thing.Copy !req
420. - No suppliers though.
- We're still looking for a way into that.Copy !req
421. There was nothing on the wire
that took us toward New York.Copy !req
422. The trouble is,
we have these post-9l1 protocols.Copy !req
423. We can't pick up any new narcotics work...Copy !req
424. unless it goes to priority
organized-crime targets.Copy !req
425. Meaning Cosa Nostra or Colombians.
Or Russians maybe.Copy !req
426. We don't have any Colombians in Baltimore.Copy !req
427. We don't have any wise guys.Copy !req
428. All we got is a whole lot of locals
a little busy tearing the Westside apart.Copy !req
429. I hear you,
but the Bureau-wide protocol applies.Copy !req
430. To run with you on this,
we need a recognized OC target...Copy !req
431. or, even better, a connect to
counterterrorism or corruption.Copy !req
432. You go near stuff like that...Copy !req
433. we have something
we can bring to our ASAC.Copy !req
434. What kind of corruption?Copy !req
435. Don't know.Copy !req
436. What kind you got?Copy !req
437. Poot, we up yet?Copy !req
438. - Where Roc-Roc at with the shit?
- Package in.Copy !req
439. Who is it?Copy !req
440. - Onion and them off-brand niggers.
- Onion?Copy !req
441. - What the fuck they got?
- Some shit they call yellow tops.Copy !req
442. Yellow tops?Copy !req
443. Got them yellow tops, y'all, yellow tops.Copy !req
444. Yellows tops.Copy !req
445. - Got them yellow tops.
- Motherfucker, what the fuck is up?Copy !req
446. Fuck is y'all doing?Copy !req
447. Do what you feel.
But be ready to finish what you start.Copy !req
448. What you doing?
This ain't no open market, you know that.Copy !req
449. Ain't no market at all, nigger.Copy !req
450. You ain't got shit to sell.
Back that ass up for those that do.Copy !req
451. - You know what?
- What?Copy !req
452. Get the fuck out of here, bitch!Copy !req
453. - See, that's why we can't win.
- Why not?Copy !req
454. - They fuck up, they get beat.
- We fuck up, they give us pensions.Copy !req
455. Close it! Get the fuck out of here!Copy !req
456. Heard you ain't much as an eyeball witness.Copy !req
457. Bad as any civilian.Copy !req
458. Guess so.Copy !req
459. Where we at?Copy !req
460. With what?Copy !req
461. With the case, fool.Copy !req
462. Jesus, give it a rest.Copy !req
463. What's on the wire?Copy !req
464. - Come on, man.
- Wire's dead.Copy !req
465. They changed up after we
hit them with raids.Copy !req
466. Daniels didn't tell you?Copy !req
467. Hell, no.Copy !req
468. He only talks to me about the good shit.Copy !req
469. About how y'all were
onto my shooters and stuff.Copy !req
470. Yeah, well, we lost the wire,
but the good news is D'Angelo's flipped...Copy !req
471. - and we're talking to the feds about maybe—
- Fuck both y'all.Copy !req
472. She wants me to quit.Copy !req
473. Says there ain't nothing worth this.Copy !req
474. So, I promised her I'd think about it.Copy !req
475. What do you say?Copy !req
476. I don't know.Copy !req
477. I guess you should do what you need to.Copy !req
478. But she's right.Copy !req
479. It isn't worth it.Copy !req
480. No?Copy !req
481. Yeah. Probably not.Copy !req
482. Anyway, what took you so long
getting up in here?Copy !req
483. Shit, no cards, no flowers.Copy !req
484. I mean, what the fuck, Jimmy?Copy !req
485. I couldn't, I...Copy !req
486. I felt...Copy !req
487. A case like this, it's always you or Sydnor...Copy !req
488. or some other black cop
who ends up going undercover.Copy !req
489. I swear, if I could do it over...Copy !req
490. If l...Copy !req
491. If I could do it over...Copy !req
492. you know what I'd do?Copy !req
493. Put more tape on that fucking gun.Copy !req
494. I'm sorry, Kima.Copy !req
495. I'm sorry.Copy !req
496. Anyway, since I got you up in here...Copy !req
497. acting like my bitch and shit...Copy !req
498. with all your guilty-ass crying
and whatnot...Copy !req
499. maybe you can do something for me.Copy !req
500. She said you were doing good.
Said she was proud of you.Copy !req
501. How's she doing?Copy !req
502. Still shook.Copy !req
503. But she wanted you to have that...Copy !req
504. and told me to tell you
she's sorry to be late with it.Copy !req
505. Girl got such heart, you know?Copy !req
506. Yeah.Copy !req
507. This is enough for what
I got going now, man.Copy !req
508. You give the rest back to her.Copy !req
509. Are you sure?Copy !req
510. Give her my love.Copy !req
511. Right.Copy !req
512. McNulty.Copy !req
513. Don't tell her.Copy !req
514. - What you got, man?
- Over there, man.Copy !req
515. Un-fucking-believable.
Five guys got jumped. Not just you.Copy !req
516. - Four other guys jumped me.
- I'm sorry, man.Copy !req
517. It's got to be all the brutality complaints...Copy !req
518. which means it ain't never gonna matter
how well I do on no fucking test.Copy !req
519. You don't know that.
You might make the next list, you know?Copy !req
520. You don't know.Copy !req
521. Guess I ain't leadership material.Copy !req
522. - Congratulations, Carv.
- Thanks.Copy !req
523. Yeah?Copy !req
524. The world is on its ass.Copy !req
525. Guy called for you from the phone company.Copy !req
526. Says he's got the number you wanted
for a house in Philadelphia.Copy !req
527. Beautiful, thank you.Copy !req
528. - Good casework.
- Thank you.Copy !req
529. I don't think I'm giving anything away...Copy !req
530. by telling that Arnold here
has had a file on Senator Davis...Copy !req
531. for two and a half years.Copy !req
532. It took us a while to see it,
but the quid pro quo is right there...Copy !req
533. in that Westside redevelopment mess.Copy !req
534. Barksdale, or his fronts,
grease enough city politicians...Copy !req
535. and word comes back years in advance
where the development zone's going to be.Copy !req
536. He buys up every piece
of garbage real estate he can...Copy !req
537. flips it three or four times,
exaggerating the values.Copy !req
538. The city's gonna pay him millions...Copy !req
539. to condemn the properties
for the renewal project.Copy !req
540. It's a lot to work with, but we're willing.Copy !req
541. The question is,
can your cooperator give us the senator...Copy !req
542. or any other political figure?Copy !req
543. - The cooperator?
- D'Angelo Barksdale.Copy !req
544. What does he have for us on the money?Copy !req
545. Nothing.Copy !req
546. He gives you the drugs and the violence.Copy !req
547. He gives you Avon Barksdale, Stringer Bell.Copy !req
548. - And they give us the senator.
- Maybe, yeah.Copy !req
549. You're talking about turning Barksdale
and Bell into cooperators...Copy !req
550. and making the politicians
the primary target?Copy !req
551. Of course.Copy !req
552. No, fuck the politicians.
It's Barksdale and Bell.Copy !req
553. No, fuck the politicians.
It's Barksdale and Bell.Copy !req
554. Those guys have
turned West Baltimore into a free-fire zone.Copy !req
555. No one's saying they walk.Copy !req
556. What you are saying is that
if we bring you the case...Copy !req
557. it's your intention to let Barksdale
and Bell reduce any sentence...Copy !req
558. they get through cooperation?Copy !req
559. Jesus Christ, are you kidding?
You're seeing all this ass-backwards.Copy !req
560. Detective, in this office we have a mandate
to pursue political corruption.Copy !req
561. Can you believe these guys?Copy !req
562. - Jimmy, look.
- What?Copy !req
563. Drugs and murder don't cut it anymore?
How about terrorism?Copy !req
564. These guys have dropped 14, 15 bodies.
The witnesses, cooperators—Copy !req
565. That kind of hyperbole
doesn't serve anyone, detective.Copy !req
566. I think we're going with
a different direction on this.Copy !req
567. Thank you for your time.Copy !req
568. West Baltimore is dying,
and you empty suits...Copy !req
569. are running around trying to pin
some politician's pelt to the wall.Copy !req
570. Thought you was real police, brother.Copy !req
571. So, they got you all the way out here?Copy !req
572. I started out thinking you was in Jersey.Copy !req
573. You ain't in Jersey.Copy !req
574. I figured they still got you
down in Central Booking.Copy !req
575. But, all the way out here...Copy !req
576. Do send a message, though.Copy !req
577. Yeah, a message needs sending.Copy !req
578. How y'all even find me?Copy !req
579. Ain't no one going to keep
a mother from her son, right?Copy !req
580. You know, he's always talking family.Copy !req
581. "Family is the heart," he say.Copy !req
582. Well, I'm family...Copy !req
583. ain't I?Copy !req
584. What about me for once?Copy !req
585. It ain't right.Copy !req
586. What's right?Copy !req
587. You like for him to step up,
take all the weight, and let you walk?Copy !req
588. Because he will. You know he will.Copy !req
589. But if he got to go away...Copy !req
590. that mean you got to step up
and fill his shoes.Copy !req
591. You ready for that?Copy !req
592. Ma, you know I ain't.Copy !req
593. I ain't ready,
and I'm never gonna be ready for this game.Copy !req
594. - Dee, come on.
- Look.Copy !req
595. They're giving me a chance to walk away...Copy !req
596. to start again someplace else.Copy !req
597. And what you giving them?Copy !req
598. Look...Copy !req
599. He messed up, Dee, he knows it.Copy !req
600. Now if you want to get even
with him, you can.Copy !req
601. But if you hurt him,
you hurt this whole family.Copy !req
602. All of us. Me and Trina and the cousins.Copy !req
603. And Donette, too. And your baby.Copy !req
604. Your own baby boy.Copy !req
605. This right here is part of the game, Dee.Copy !req
606. And without the game...Copy !req
607. this whole family would be
down in the fucking Terrace...Copy !req
608. living off scraps.Copy !req
609. Shit, we probably wouldn't even be a family.Copy !req
610. Start over?Copy !req
611. How the fuck you going to
start over without your peoples?Copy !req
612. Without your own child, even?Copy !req
613. If you ain't got family in this world...Copy !req
614. what the hell you got?Copy !req
615. This motherfucker Wee-Bey twitches,
there won't even be a trial.Copy !req
616. Detective Carver, a word?Copy !req
617. Shut the door.Copy !req
618. What's up, Lieutenant?Copy !req
619. Anything you want to tell me?Copy !req
620. Been weeks now...Copy !req
621. the Deputy Ops knows what's going on
in this unit almost before I do.Copy !req
622. Except last week...Copy !req
623. we run the bug up
into Barksdale's club office...Copy !req
624. and Burrell, for once, he's a step behind.Copy !req
625. You see it?Copy !req
626. - Maybe he—
- I see it.Copy !req
627. I look around the office...Copy !req
628. and I see that one of my people
is at the academy for in-service.Copy !req
629. Lieutenant, I swear, it wasn't my idea.Copy !req
630. I'm minding my business,
doing my fucking job...Copy !req
631. when the man calls me upstairs
for coffee and a Danish.Copy !req
632. I mean, I never even been on
the eighth floor of that fucking building.Copy !req
633. And there's the Deputy fucking Ops...Copy !req
634. telling me how concerned
he is about the case...Copy !req
635. how he needs to be informed.Copy !req
636. I mean, he's the Deputy fucking Ops, man.Copy !req
637. Couple weeks from now...Copy !req
638. you're gonna be
in some district somewhere...Copy !req
639. with 11 or 12 uniforms
looking to you for everything.Copy !req
640. And some of them
are going to be good police.Copy !req
641. Some of them are going to
be young and stupid.Copy !req
642. A few are going to be pieces of shit.Copy !req
643. But all of them will take their cue from you.Copy !req
644. You show loyalty, they learn loyalty.Copy !req
645. You show them it's about the work,
it'll be about the work.Copy !req
646. You show them some other kind of game,
then that's the game they'll play.Copy !req
647. I came on in the Eastern...Copy !req
648. and there was a piece-of-shit lieutenant
hoping to be a captain...Copy !req
649. piece-of-shit sergeants
hoping to be lieutenants.Copy !req
650. Pretty soon we had piece-of-shit patrolmen
trying to figure the job for themselves.Copy !req
651. And some of what happens then
is hard as hell to live down.Copy !req
652. Comes a day you're going to have to decide
whether it's about you or about the work.Copy !req
653. Grand jury came in Tuesday.Copy !req
654. But you knew that, right?Copy !req
655. We're working a flight warrant today.Copy !req
656. There's a lot to do here, in-office.Copy !req
657. I'd be careful with that, though.Copy !req
658. I understand the trigger pull
used to be light.Copy !req
659. Keep him down, keep him down.Copy !req
660. You got him? Get him up there, get him up.Copy !req
661. Bunch of low-bottom bitches.Copy !req
662. - Get his wrists.
- Y'all didn't have to fuck with my ride.Copy !req
663. Motherfuckers got lucky.Copy !req
664. Yeah?Copy !req
665. Podunk lawyer in Denton's
giving the guards a hard time...Copy !req
666. about moving D'Angelo
from original jurisdiction.Copy !req
667. Put the call through.Copy !req
668. Okay.Copy !req
669. Officer Mace, ASA Pearlman,
you got a problem with the lawyer?Copy !req
670. Okay, put the asshole on.Copy !req
671. This is he.Copy !req
672. You do not make it easy, Jimmy.
I have to admit, I am deeply ambivalent.Copy !req
673. - Excuse me?
- Sit.Copy !req
674. Sit!Copy !req
675. - Here.
- I heard from Bunk.Copy !req
676. Philly. Great work.Copy !req
677. You all did great work.Copy !req
678. And the number of clearances
I'm looking at here...Copy !req
679. Christ, for the first time this year,
we got the clearance rate up over 40%.Copy !req
680. That's on the one hand.Copy !req
681. On the other hand, I know the Deputy Ops
got a call from the first deputy...Copy !req
682. U.S. Attorney this morning...Copy !req
683. asking whether an asshole such as yourself
really works for us.Copy !req
684. Of course, this is the first the Deputy
hears his troops...Copy !req
685. are creeping behind his back
to take a case federal...Copy !req
686. when they've already been told
the case is closed.Copy !req
687. You're a good detective.Copy !req
688. And I've got to admit
you got some stones on you.Copy !req
689. Did you actually call
the first deputy an empty suit?Copy !req
690. I want to see you land okay, Jimmy.Copy !req
691. So, tell me, where don't you want to go?Copy !req
692. You all know that Baltimore city jurors
are capable of just about anything.Copy !req
693. Now, look, you want to sit
around for months on end...Copy !req
694. going through a bunch of half-heard...Copy !req
695. half-said telephone conversations
and see how well you do...Copy !req
696. - I'll certainly respect the effort.
- It's not just talk on the wire.Copy !req
697. We've got seized money
and lot of dope on the table.Copy !req
698. And a lot of violence.Copy !req
699. All of which stops
way short of Mr. Barksdale.Copy !req
700. You know this.Copy !req
701. All of it except for the New Jersey bust.
That one he eats.Copy !req
702. Maybe he does.Copy !req
703. Maybe he pleads to one count
of attempted possession...Copy !req
704. and takes, I don't know, maybe three, four.Copy !req
705. Maybe he can arrange
for everyone you have...Copy !req
706. on those tapes to follow suit.Copy !req
707. Maybe you get five-year pleas from those
with no prior felony convictions...Copy !req
708. 10 years for those with one prior,
15 for two or more.Copy !req
709. What about the murders?Copy !req
710. Maybe we acknowledge
you've got Mr. Brice cold for...Copy !req
711. murder of Orlando Blocker
and wounding of the police officer.Copy !req
712. - Who?
- Wee-Bey.Copy !req
713. Representing Mr. Brice...Copy !req
714. I'm fairly confident that
to avoid the death penalty...Copy !req
715. he'll proffer to at least a half dozen
of your open murders.Copy !req
716. Naming co-conspirators?Copy !req
717. For that kind of cooperation,
I'd be willing to consider straight life.Copy !req
718. No, indeed.Copy !req
719. I believe Mr. Brice is ready
to take sole responsibility...Copy !req
720. for all of his crimes.Copy !req
721. Still, you walk away
with at least a half-dozen clearances.Copy !req
722. Assets.Copy !req
723. You take the strip club,
you take whatever trucks and cars...Copy !req
724. you can link to the drug trafficking,
and also whatever cash you've seized.Copy !req
725. He's got dozens of other properties:
the funeral parlor, the towing company.Copy !req
726. No. You get the cars,
because you can tie them to illegal activity.Copy !req
727. No. You get the cars,
because you can tie them to illegal activity.Copy !req
728. But there's nothing else of his to take.Copy !req
729. So, you keep most of the money,
most of the real estate...Copy !req
730. and Stringer Bell stays on the street
with his hand on the throttle.Copy !req
731. If you have a charge against Mr. Bell, file it.Copy !req
732. Otherwise, it's my understanding that nothing
in all those hours of tape implicates him.Copy !req
733. Three or four years ain't enough, Maury.Copy !req
734. Not for Avon Barksdale.Copy !req
735. No?Copy !req
736. Make an offer.Copy !req
737. Part 14 of the circuit court
of Baltimore City now in session.Copy !req
738. - Be seated.
- First up.Copy !req
739. - Be seated.
- First up.Copy !req
740. State versus Avon Randolph Barksdale,
Your Honor.Copy !req
741. One count of possession
with intent to distribute...Copy !req
742. to wit, a kilogram of heroin.Copy !req
743. - You have a statement of facts?
- Yes, Your Honor.Copy !req
744. Mr. Barksdale is offering a plea of guilty...Copy !req
745. in exchange for a maximum
of seven years in DOC...Copy !req
746. in consideration of
the following agreed-upon facts:Copy !req
747. On or about the date
of September 17, 2002...Copy !req
748. in the jurisdiction
of Essex County, New Jersey...Copy !req
749. Trooper Robert Warren
of the Newark barracks...Copy !req
750. effected a traffic stop
on a rented Ford Taurus...Copy !req
751. traveling southbound near Exit 13.Copy !req
752. That traffic stop resulted
from information gleaned...Copy !req
753. from electronic surveillance of Mr. Barksdale
and his nephew, D'Angelo Barksdale...Copy !req
754. by detectives assigned to a special detail...Copy !req
755. under the command
of a city narcotics supervisor.Copy !req
756. A search of the vehicle, rented
from the Avis location at B.W.I. Airport...Copy !req
757. revealed that a kilogram
of nearly pure heroin...Copy !req
758. was concealed beneath
the spare tire in the car trunk.Copy !req
759. In accepting this plea, Mr. Barksdale
acknowledges his role in procuring...Copy !req
760. those drugs with the intent to dilute,
package, and sell retail amounts of heroin...Copy !req
761. Deidre Kresson, Roland Leggett,
Toreen Boyd, all tied to the same gun.Copy !req
762. Plus, we got the stick-up boys,
Brandon Wright, John Bailey.Copy !req
763. With Orlando, that makes six.Copy !req
