1. Do you get
that you have MS?Copy !req
2. We're firming up strategy
on the futureCopy !req
3. of this presidency,
and we don't knowCopy !req
4. if this President
is interested in the future.Copy !req
5. What am I supposed to tell
my news director?Copy !req
6. That we need 30 minutes
Wednesday night.Copy !req
7. Order the Attorney General
to appoint a special prosecutor.Copy !req
8. Well, how many
are they estimating?Copy !req
9. They've got two Bradleys
with 120-millimeter cannonsCopy !req
10. and a couple of artillery tubes.Copy !req
11. What do we have?Copy !req
12. 37 Marines with M-14s.Copy !req
13. There was an accident
at 18th and Potomac.Copy !req
14. Mrs. Landingham was
driving her car back here.Copy !req
15. Is she all right?Copy !req
16. No.Copy !req
17. She's dead.Copy !req
18. Most of us are just
hearing the news now.Copy !req
19. From a
conference call.Copy !req
20. Yes.Copy !req
21. There hasn't been a lot
of time to digest this.Copy !req
22. but what we do know is
it's the House DemocratsCopy !req
23. who are going to take it
in the throat.
Yeah.Copy !req
24. You might be able
to get the votersCopy !req
25. to accept MS in some of
the suburban districtsCopy !req
26. but the whole House
is up for reelection.Copy !req
27. Yeah.Copy !req
28. It's not a matter
of accepting M...Copy !req
29. There was a cover...Copy !req
30. The point isCopy !req
31. even if you can squeeze
out an electoral...Copy !req
32. Even if you can
squeeze out a winCopy !req
33. this is what
the campaign's
going to be about.Copy !req
34. You're going
to have DemocratsCopy !req
35. telling the PresidentCopy !req
36. "Don't come to my district;
I got troubles enough"Copy !req
37. and your campaign
never gets outCopy !req
38. of the Rose Garden.Copy !req
39. Yes, and we're running
without a standard-bearer.Copy !req
40. At a time when
we've got policy cases
against the RepublicansCopy !req
41. on tax cuts,
environment, educationCopy !req
42. and this is what
the campaign's
going to be about.Copy !req
43. Now, Leo, most of us
are just hearing the newsCopy !req
44. and I don't like
being the first oneCopy !req
45. to say it, but I'm going to.Copy !req
46. I think the President has
got to strongly considerCopy !req
47. not running for reelection.Copy !req
48. You think
you're the first one to say it?Copy !req
49. Leo...Copy !req
50. You are, at minimumCopy !req
51. the 35th in the last two hours.Copy !req
52. Well, we're the ones
that are talking to you nowCopy !req
53. and we're the ones
that are asking.Copy !req
54. Is the President going
to run for reelection?Copy !req
55. Harry, Bill, there's going to be
a press conference tonight.Copy !req
56. I'd watch.Copy !req
57. [Captioning sponsored by
NBCCopy !req
58. WARNER BROS. TELEVISIONCopy !req
59. and "TOYOTACopy !req
60. More choices. Better selection.
Experience Toyota today."]Copy !req
61. with the First Lady
on his right.Copy !req
62. You don't want him in
front of the fireplace?Copy !req
63. The fireplace
is too much.Copy !req
64. He'll sit here,
which meansCopy !req
65. they're going to have
to light the roomCopy !req
66. from outside
the window.Copy !req
67. Do they know that?
We'll let them know.Copy !req
68. Last time they didn't know.Copy !req
69. The President taped
an Easter messageCopy !req
70. that looked like
it was lit by Ed Wood.Copy !req
71. Toby...
A pitcher of water,
but keep it offscreen.Copy !req
72. They know.
They got to light from
outside the window.Copy !req
73. Look... I don't care.Copy !req
74. Look, Toby,
has anyone consideredCopy !req
75. whether or not
he's up for this?Copy !req
76. Up for this?Copy !req
77. I mean, some stuff
has happened since...Copy !req
78. C.J. gave it
to the network.Copy !req
79. We're pretty much
locked in, so...Copy !req
80. When are we prepping with him?Copy !req
81. After the service.Copy !req
82. There's going to be time?Copy !req
83. We'll have
the afternoon.Copy !req
84. I think we should
consider taking...Copy !req
85. There aren't any options left.Copy !req
86. We're going on TV at 8:00!Copy !req
87. Toby?Copy !req
88. Yeah.Copy !req
89. I'm sorry, but I had to put
Greg SummerhaysCopy !req
90. back on your schedule.Copy !req
91. No, I took him off.Copy !req
92. Leo's office had me
put him back on.Copy !req
93. Why?Copy !req
94. They want you to
keep the appointment.Copy !req
95. We've got her funeral today.Copy !req
96. We've got these...Copy !req
97. I said 4:00.Copy !req
98. Yeah, all right.Copy !req
99. Carol?Copy !req
100. Yeah?Copy !req
101. AP, Reuters, Agence France.Copy !req
102. Something about seating
on Air Force One.Copy !req
103. Seating arrangements?Copy !req
104. Seating arrangements
on Air Force One.Copy !req
105. C.J.?Copy !req
106. Listen, I was thinkingCopy !req
107. since it's probably
going to be a light dayCopy !req
108. I'd maybe blow off work,
go shopping or something.Copy !req
109. What do you need?Copy !req
110. Uh, can I give you
a quick brief?Copy !req
111. Sure.Copy !req
112. The Justice Department's run
out of money in their suitCopy !req
113. against the
tobacco companies.Copy !req
114. Justice Department's
overmatched.Copy !req
115. Yeah, by hundreds of millions
of dollars.Copy !req
116. They're asking for $30 million,
and we thinkCopy !req
117. they should have it.Copy !req
118. Who disagrees with this?Copy !req
119. Eight of the 15 members
of the subcommitteeCopy !req
120. that controls the
budgets for Justice
and CommerceCopy !req
121. including Kalmbach,
who has significant
ties to tobaccoCopy !req
122. and Warren and RossitterCopy !req
123. who do not.Copy !req
124. We lost two Democrats?Copy !req
125. They have ideological
objections.Copy !req
126. Yeah, it's just not a good timeCopy !req
127. to be losing Democrats.Copy !req
128. You haven't been in my officeCopy !req
129. this morning.Copy !req
130. We'll get them back.Copy !req
131. Anyway, uhCopy !req
132. Leo felt pretty stronglyCopy !req
133. that we should
light a fire under itCopy !req
134. so I wrote up a pretty
strongly-worded release.Copy !req
135. "The White House...
For Immediate Release...Copy !req
136. "Office of the Press...Copy !req
137. "Today, the President
calls on Congress...Copy !req
138. "... deserve their day in courtCopy !req
139. "and this administration
won't sit on the benchCopy !req
140. "while well-fed members
of the Appropriations CommitteeCopy !req
141. "choke off funding for a lawsuitCopy !req
142. "aimed at perpetrators
of hundreds of thousandsCopy !req
143. "of negligent homicidesCopy !req
144. while filling their
campaign war chests."Copy !req
145. This is like the fire
we used to throwCopy !req
146. in the early primaries.Copy !req
147. Let Bartlet be Bartlet.Copy !req
148. You got to put it
away for awhile.Copy !req
149. You think?Copy !req
150. I'm going in there
now to tell themCopy !req
151. a landing ship
helicopter assault teamCopy !req
152. is steaming off
Port-au-Prince,
and after thatCopy !req
153. I'm bringing
in AP, Reuters
and Agence France.Copy !req
154. Nobody's going
to write about an
appropriations bill.Copy !req
155. Haiti is going to get bumpedCopy !req
156. to the Lifestyle Section.Copy !req
157. Yeah, I suppose.Copy !req
158. Listen...Copy !req
159. have you seen him today?Copy !req
160. No. Have you?Copy !req
161. No.Copy !req
162. All right, listen, I got to...Copy !req
163. Yeah. Thanks.Copy !req
164. Why are we assuming
it's Hoynes?Copy !req
165. Please.Copy !req
166. No, why are we assuming
it's got to be Hoynes?Copy !req
167. You don't think Wedland's
going to get into it?Copy !req
168. Hutchinson? Seth Gillette?Copy !req
169. Please.Copy !req
170. Gillette's lucky if he carries
his immediate family.Copy !req
171. It's Hoynes,
it's Hoynes.Copy !req
172. Sam, you understand
this conversationCopy !req
173. isn't ruling out Bartlet
as a candidate.Copy !req
174. It's a just what-if.Copy !req
175. We're party strategists.
It's what we're paid for.Copy !req
176. Yeah.Copy !req
177. Hoynes is the only oneCopy !req
178. who put together
the money this fast.Copy !req
179. He's the most successful
fund-raiserCopy !req
180. the party's ever had.Copy !req
181. Though obviously,
it'd be easierCopy !req
182. if Hoynes was running
as an incumbent.Copy !req
183. Sam...
Okay.Copy !req
184. Thanks.Copy !req
185. No, it was
an inappropriate...Copy !req
186. No, when I say
okay, that's it.Copy !req
187. Close your notebooks.Copy !req
188. You don't talk like that here.Copy !req
189. I don't give a damn
whose nephew you are.Copy !req
190. Tony, President Bartlet's
not a candidate.Copy !req
191. He's the President.Copy !req
192. What are the conditions
inside the embassy?Copy !req
193. They've still got
running waterCopy !req
194. but the power's been cut.Copy !req
195. The emergency generator's
got about 24 hours.Copy !req
196. Any injuries?Copy !req
197. There aren't any injuriesCopy !req
198. but the Deputy Chief's
a diabeticCopy !req
199. and he's running
out of insulin.Copy !req
200. The Red Cross
can help us out there?Copy !req
201. Yes, sir.Copy !req
202. What's outside?Copy !req
203. About 1200 troops
now with A-15sCopy !req
204. positioned outside
the gates.Copy !req
205. They've got four
105mm howitzers...Copy !req
206. Which are trained at...?Copy !req
207. Our front door.Copy !req
208. Mr. PresidentCopy !req
209. we want to send
Fitzwallace
down there.Copy !req
210. Why?Copy !req
211. There's a Haitian general
named Francis St. Jacques.Copy !req
212. He trained with Fitz
at Annapolis and...Copy !req
213. Jed.Copy !req
214. Jed!Copy !req
215. Jed, Jed,
your father's calling you.Copy !req
216. Jed!Copy !req
217. Didn't you hear me calling you?Copy !req
218. No, sir, I didn't.Copy !req
219. I was...
I didn't.Copy !req
220. Mr. Spence found
this cigarette buttCopy !req
221. on the floor in the
aisle of the chapel.Copy !req
222. People shouldn't put
their cigarettes outCopy !req
223. in the chapel, Mr. Spence.Copy !req
224. Well, people shouldn't
be smoking in the chapelCopy !req
225. I think is my point, Jed.Copy !req
226. Do you understand
what I'm saying?
Yes, sir.Copy !req
227. Could you tell your friends,
please?Copy !req
228. Yeah.Copy !req
229. Jed, hang on.Copy !req
230. I want you to meet someone.Copy !req
231. She's going to be taking over
in my officeCopy !req
232. for Mrs. Tillinghouse.Copy !req
233. Excuse me.Copy !req
234. This is Delores Landingham.Copy !req
235. Mrs. Landingham,
this is my eldest sonCopy !req
236. Jed.Copy !req
237. So, what happens?Copy !req
238. Basically we thinkCopy !req
239. we can get
St. JacquesCopy !req
240. to fracture
Bazan's army.Copy !req
241. So if we invade...?Copy !req
242. It becomes
peacekeeping.Copy !req
243. Okay, send Fitzwallace down.Copy !req
244. Anything else?Copy !req
245. No, sir.Copy !req
246. Thank you, Mr. President.Copy !req
247. Thank you,
Mr. President.Copy !req
248. Thank you, sir.Copy !req
249. They've been in there 48 hours.Copy !req
250. Yes, sir.Copy !req
251. The guy's been
President of his
country for two days.Copy !req
252. He's spent them
both at gunpoint.Copy !req
253. Yeah.Copy !req
254. What do you know
about this storm?Copy !req
255. The one...?
It's moving from FloridaCopy !req
256. to South Carolina.Copy !req
257. Yeah, it's
supposed to be bad.Copy !req
258. It's a tropical storm.
Yes, sir.Copy !req
259. No, I mean, it's been designated
a tropical storm.Copy !req
260. That means it has a surface
wind speed of something.Copy !req
261. Yes, sir.Copy !req
262. Isn't it strange to have
a tropical storm in May?Copy !req
263. I'm not certain.Copy !req
264. I'm pretty sure
there's a seasonCopy !req
265. and this isn't it.Copy !req
266. I can have someone
find out for you,
Mr. President.Copy !req
267. I mean,
it's not a big deal.Copy !req
268. It's just that
I'm pretty sure it's strange.Copy !req
269. The motorcade will leave
for the cathedral in an hour.Copy !req
270. You ever been to
National Cathedral?Copy !req
271. Yes, sir.Copy !req
272. You know, you can lay
the Washington MonumentCopy !req
273. down on its side
in that church.Copy !req
274. I did, actually.Copy !req
275. We should try it.Copy !req
276. You only have two meetings
between now and then.Copy !req
277. Is there anything else
you need, sir?Copy !req
278. I need pallbearers.Copy !req
279. Yes, sir.Copy !req
280. and a Battalion Landing Team.Copy !req
281. They'll cover that
at the Pentagon briefing.Copy !req
282. Does the fact that the OAS
has passed a resolutionCopy !req
283. allowing you to explore
military optionsCopy !req
284. mean you've exhaustedCopy !req
285. the diplomatic ones?
Of course it doesn'tCopy !req
286. but it should underline
the consequences for BazanCopy !req
287. should he decide
to enter our embassyCopy !req
288. and/or arrest the democratically
elected President of Haiti.Copy !req
289. That's all I have for now.
Thank you.Copy !req
290. C.J.!
Before you all go,
C.J. needs to seeCopy !req
291. AP, Reuters and Agence France
in the office.Copy !req
292. She needs to discuss seating
arrangements on Air Force One.Copy !req
293. C.J.
Yeah?Copy !req
294. We've got a problem.Copy !req
295. That's pretty hard
to believe.Copy !req
296. We can't have the
press conference
in the East Room.Copy !req
297. What are you talking about?Copy !req
298. I just got off the phone
with Brian CoburnCopy !req
299. and we can't have it
in the East Room.
Why not?Copy !req
300. They've been pulling
the wiring and they
found asbestosCopy !req
301. and they have
to seal it off.Copy !req
302. There's been asbestos
in the East Room
this whole time?Copy !req
303. Yeah. So I'm going
to make a list...
Put together, okay...Copy !req
304. Yeah.
Put together a list
of alternatives.Copy !req
305. Come on in.Copy !req
306. C.J., I don't have
any problem with
my seat on the plane.Copy !req
307. Get inside.Copy !req
308. Seriously, I complained
that one timeCopy !req
309. 'cause, I don't know,
I was in a bad mood.Copy !req
310. This isn't about
seating arrangements.Copy !req
311. Notebooks,
no tape recordersCopy !req
312. the story's embargoed
for an hourCopy !req
313. and you'll identify me as
a senior White House official.Copy !req
314. What about Chicago?Copy !req
315. What about Tokyo?Copy !req
316. That depends. When's
it going to leak?Copy !req
317. I'm sorry?Copy !req
318. When are we leaking
the story?Copy !req
319. C.J.'s doing it right now.Copy !req
320. Wall Street'll
have it in an hour.Copy !req
321. In two hours, sellers
will outnumber buyers.Copy !req
322. Excuse me, keep going.Copy !req
323. In what sectors?Copy !req
324. In all sectors of the
New York Stock Exchange...Copy !req
325. Charlie.
Yes, sir?Copy !req
326. Do you have any ideaCopy !req
327. why the door to the portico
keeps swinging open?Copy !req
328. It's a little annoying.Copy !req
329. They're replacing
the latch.Copy !req
330. It's swinging open
from the wind.Copy !req
331. But the door opens out.Copy !req
332. When the right sequence
of doors are open
in the buildingCopy !req
333. there's a wind tunnel
into the Oval Office.Copy !req
334. No kidding.Copy !req
335. What about Europe and Japan?Copy !req
336. Well, Japan's going
to be up and tradingCopy !req
337. by the time we go on TV.Copy !req
338. Charlie says there's a wind
tunnel created by something.Copy !req
339. They're fixing the latch.Copy !req
340. Mr. President?
Yeah.Copy !req
341. Is the motorcade
ready?
Yes, sir.Copy !req
342. Okay. Well, we've got to go.Copy !req
343. I don't know what to say.Copy !req
344. Leo's pretty rich.Copy !req
345. Maybe he can buy
some tech stocksCopy !req
346. jack up the price.Copy !req
347. Keep me posted on
the bellwethers, okay?Copy !req
348. Yeah. Thank you,
Mr. President.Copy !req
349. Is the First Lady
meeting us in the car?Copy !req
350. Yes. It's a
nondenominational service.Copy !req
351. What'd she say?Copy !req
352. She said
the First Lady's meeting usCopy !req
353. in the car.Copy !req
354. It wasn't
a nondenominational service.Copy !req
355. MRS.
Of course it was.Copy !req
356. It wouldn't have
felt nondenominationalCopy !req
357. if you were Jewish.Copy !req
358. It was a
nondenominational
Christian service.Copy !req
359. Attendance at Chapel
is required...Copy !req
360. It was a
nondenominational service.Copy !req
361. "Our Father" is not
nondenominational.Copy !req
362. Everyone says
"Our Father."
Catholics don't.Copy !req
363. Catholics don't sayCopy !req
364. "For thine is the
kingdom and the powerCopy !req
365. and the glory
forever and ever."Copy !req
366. You know,
I'm just saying.Copy !req
367. Why do you
work here?
I'm sorry?Copy !req
368. Why do you work here
after classes?Copy !req
369. I can't imagine anyone
in your family's
on work-study.Copy !req
370. No, I get free tuition.Copy !req
371. So, you know, I guess
it's a good idea to
give something back.Copy !req
372. Why do you call
your father "sir"?Copy !req
373. Is this going to be
a whole afternoon
of questions?Copy !req
374. Actually, you've
been talking for
quite some time.Copy !req
375. I'm sorry. Am I
boring you, Delores?Copy !req
376. Mrs. Landingham,
please.Copy !req
377. My father's the Headmaster.Copy !req
378. Yeah, but before he
was your HeadmasterCopy !req
379. he was your father,
right?Copy !req
380. I don't want to make
the other guysCopy !req
381. feel uncomfortable.Copy !req
382. So you call him "sir."Copy !req
383. Yeah.
Oh.Copy !req
384. You know they
released the girlCopy !req
385. from the hospital
this morning.Copy !req
386. The driver?
Yeah.Copy !req
387. She fractured her wrist,
some stitches over her eyeCopy !req
388. and the other two have
some scrapes and bruises.Copy !req
389. It looks like they're
going to charge herCopy !req
390. with vehicular manslaughter.Copy !req
391. Frank MitchelCopy !req
392. Joanna, Bill Carney...Copy !req
393. they told me they
were in meetings
the whole morning.Copy !req
394. Yeah.Copy !req
395. The consensus seems to be
that if you step backCopy !req
396. and put your support
behind HoynesCopy !req
397. there's a decent chanceCopy !req
398. the Democrats can keep
the White House.Copy !req
399. The world'll rest easier.Copy !req
400. We're here.Copy !req
401. "I am the Resurrection
and I am life," says the Lord.Copy !req
402. "Whoever believes in me
shall live even though he die."Copy !req
403. God of Mercy, you are the hope
of sinners, the joy of saints.Copy !req
404. We pray for our sister DeloresCopy !req
405. whose body we honor
with Christian burial.Copy !req
406. Give her happiness with your
saints, and raise up her bodyCopy !req
407. with the saints at the last day
to be in your presence forever.Copy !req
408. As for me, I know
that my Redeemer livesCopy !req
409. and that at the last,
he will stand upon the Earth.Copy !req
410. After my awaking,
he will raise me up...Copy !req
411. Jed.Copy !req
412. and in my body
I shall see God...Copy !req
413. Jed!Copy !req
414. I myself shall seeCopy !req
415. and my eyes behold him
who is my friend...Copy !req
416. Jed.Copy !req
417. Jed!Copy !req
418. I'm trying to get throughCopy !req
419. an honest day's work,
Mrs. Landingham.Copy !req
420. You missed a spot.Copy !req
421. I didn't miss it.
I just haven't
gotten to it yet.Copy !req
422. Okay.Copy !req
423. You have a habit of
doing that, you know.Copy !req
424. What's that?
Telling me I'm doing
something wrongCopy !req
425. before I've had a chance
to do it at all.Copy !req
426. Well, that must be
a little annoying.Copy !req
427. Yeah.Copy !req
428. I got a project for you.Copy !req
429. Really.Copy !req
430. You can show the courage
and the intellectCopy !req
431. and the leadership skills
everyone talks about.Copy !req
432. I'm a little busy
hosing down the boats.Copy !req
433. You know the women
who work at this schoolCopy !req
434. are paid less money
than the men?Copy !req
435. Sorry?
The women are paid
less money than the men.Copy !req
436. No, I didn't know that.Copy !req
437. You think your father does?Copy !req
438. First reading will be
from Mr. Charles YoungCopy !req
439. from the Book of Wisdom,
Chapter III.Copy !req
440. I'd like an opportunity
to make my case.Copy !req
441. What are you doing here?Copy !req
442. I'm raising an issue.Copy !req
443. You've been raising this
issue for a week now.Copy !req
444. I can tell it's had
quite an effect on you.Copy !req
445. Don't you have
a husband?Copy !req
446. What does that have
to do with anything?Copy !req
447. I'm saying shouldn't
you go homeCopy !req
448. when you're done
with work?Copy !req
449. Shouldn't you be minding
your own business?Copy !req
450. I just thought
since you're minding
everybody else's...Copy !req
451. What is that
supposed to mean?Copy !req
452. In my family, we don't
talk about money.Copy !req
453. That's because
you have money.Copy !req
454. Numbers,
Mrs. Landingham.
Excuse me?Copy !req
455. If you want to convince
me of somethingCopy !req
456. show me numbers.Copy !req
457. "But the souls of the virtuous
are in the hands of God.Copy !req
458. "No torment
shall ever touch them.Copy !req
459. "In the eyes of the unwise,
they did appear to dieCopy !req
460. "but they are at peace.Copy !req
461. "For though in the sight
of others, they were punishedCopy !req
462. their hope is full
of immortality."Copy !req
463. Car won't start.Copy !req
464. Yes.Copy !req
465. What's wrong with it?Copy !req
466. It's possibly
the starter motor
or the fan belt.Copy !req
467. Do you know
anything about cars?Copy !req
468. No.Copy !req
469. Then how do you know...?Copy !req
470. 'Cause those are
the two things
I've heard of.Copy !req
471. You fix your car and pretend
you're not listening.Copy !req
472. I'm just going to stand
here and talk to youCopy !req
473. because I know
you are.Copy !req
474. What could you
possibly want?Copy !req
475. I've got numbers.Copy !req
476. Something abnormal
about you.Copy !req
477. Florence Chadwick
in the English Department'sCopy !req
478. been here 13 years.Copy !req
479. She makes $5,900 a year.Copy !req
480. Mr. Hopkins in
the English Department'sCopy !req
481. been here four years
fewer and makes $7,100.Copy !req
482. Is this really
the best time for this?Copy !req
483. You don't seem
to be going anywhere.Copy !req
484. A female cook makes $3,200Copy !req
485. compared to a male electrician
who makes $3,900.Copy !req
486. "... channel of your peaceCopy !req
487. "where there is hatred,
let us sow loveCopy !req
488. "where there is injury,
harmonyCopy !req
489. "and where there is doubt,
let there be faith in you.Copy !req
490. Amen."Copy !req
491. The Chaplain makes $4,100Copy !req
492. the nurse makes $3,100.Copy !req
493. Miss Mueller gets paid
an additional $200 a yearCopy !req
494. to conduct the choir and bandCopy !req
495. while Mr. Ryan gets paid
an additional $400 a yearCopy !req
496. to coach the rowing team.Copy !req
497. Crew.Copy !req
498. What?
It's not rowing, it's crewCopy !req
499. and Florence ChadwickCopy !req
500. is a married woman
with no dependentsCopy !req
501. and Mr. Hopkins has
a family of four
to support.Copy !req
502. If we paid people accordingCopy !req
503. to how many children
they had to supportCopy !req
504. then Malcolm Bundy
the groundskeeperCopy !req
505. would get triple
what the Headmaster gets.Copy !req
506. Mrs. Landingham...
You know I'm right.Copy !req
507. You've known it
since I brought it up.Copy !req
508. Wh-What do you want me
to do about it?Copy !req
509. I want you
to bring it upCopy !req
510. with your father.Copy !req
511. I'm not a woman
and I don't work here.Copy !req
512. The women who do,
if they bring it upCopy !req
513. they're afraid
for their jobs.Copy !req
514. What is it
you're afraid of?Copy !req
515. Why do you talk
to me like this?Copy !req
516. 'Cause you never had
a big sisterCopy !req
517. and you need one.Copy !req
518. Look at you.Copy !req
519. You're a boy king.Copy !req
520. You're a foot smarterCopy !req
521. than the smartest kids
in the class.Copy !req
522. You're blessed
with inspiration.Copy !req
523. You must know this by now.Copy !req
524. You must have
sensed it.Copy !req
525. Look...Copy !req
526. if you think we're wrongCopy !req
527. if you think Mr. HopkinsCopy !req
528. should honestly get paid
more than Mrs. ChadwickCopy !req
529. then I respect that.Copy !req
530. But if you think we're rightCopy !req
531. and you won't speak up
'cause you can't be botheredCopy !req
532. then God, Jed,
I don't even want to know you.Copy !req
533. Come inside.Copy !req
534. I'll call Triple-A.Copy !req
535. Miss Mueller gets half
as much to teach musicCopy !req
536. as Mr. Ryan gets
to coach crew?Copy !req
537. You're going
to do it.Copy !req
538. Oh, I didn't
say that.Copy !req
539. Yes, you did.
When?Copy !req
540. Just then.Copy !req
541. You stuck your hands
in your pocketsCopy !req
542. you looked away
and smiled.Copy !req
543. That means you
made up your mind.Copy !req
544. That doesn't
mean anything.Copy !req
545. Oh, yes, it does.Copy !req
546. I-I stuck my hands
in my pockets.Copy !req
547. And looked away and smiled.Copy !req
548. We're in.Copy !req
549. It was a beautiful service,
I thought.Copy !req
550. I thought it was
a beautiful service.Copy !req
551. Yeah.Copy !req
552. She was a real dame,
old friendCopy !req
553. a real broad.Copy !req
554. Yeah.Copy !req
555. We've got to go back
to the office now, sir.Copy !req
556. Yeah.Copy !req
557. We've got some
decisions to make now.Copy !req
558. Leo, would you
do me a favor?Copy !req
559. Yeah.Copy !req
560. Would you ask
the agentsCopy !req
561. to seal the cathedral
for a minute?Copy !req
562. Yeah.Copy !req
563. You're a son of a bitch,
you know that?Copy !req
564. She bought her first new carCopy !req
565. and you hit her
with a drunk driver.Copy !req
566. What?Copy !req
567. Was that supposed
to be funny?Copy !req
568. "You can't conceive,
nor can ICopy !req
569. the appalling strangeness
of the mercy of God"Copy !req
570. says Graham Greene.Copy !req
571. I don't know whose ass
he was kissing thereCopy !req
572. 'cause I think
you're just vindictive.Copy !req
573. What was Josh Lyman,
a warning shot?Copy !req
574. That was my son.Copy !req
575. What did I ever do to yours
but praise his gloryCopy !req
576. and praise his name?Copy !req
577. There's a tropical storm
that's gaining speed and power.Copy !req
578. They say we haven't had
a storm this badCopy !req
579. since you took out
that tender ship of mineCopy !req
580. in the North Atlantic last year.Copy !req
581. 68 crew.Copy !req
582. You know what
a tender ship does?Copy !req
583. Fixes the other ships.Copy !req
584. Doesn't even carry guns.Copy !req
585. It just goes around,
fixes the other shipsCopy !req
586. and delivers the mail.Copy !req
587. That's all it can do.Copy !req
588. Gratias tibi ago, domine.Copy !req
589. Yes, I lied.Copy !req
590. It was a sin.
I've committed many sins.Copy !req
591. Have I displeased you,
you feckless thug?Copy !req
592. 3.8 million new jobs,
that wasn't good?Copy !req
593. Bailed out Mexico,
increased foreign tradeCopy !req
594. 30 million new acres
of land for conservationCopy !req
595. put Mendoza on the benchCopy !req
596. we're not fighting a war,
I've raised three children...Copy !req
597. That's not enough
to buy me out of the doghouse?Copy !req
598. Haec credam a deo pioCopy !req
599. a deo iusto, a deo scito.Copy !req
600. Cruciatus in crucem.Copy !req
601. Trus in terra servus,
nuntuis fui, officum perfeci.Copy !req
602. Cruciatus in crucem,
eas in crucem.Copy !req
603. You get Hoynes.Copy !req
604. C.J.:
We'll call them
Answer "A" and Answer "B."Copy !req
605. Yeah.Copy !req
606. "Mr. President,
does this meanCopy !req
607. you won't be seeking
a second term?"Copy !req
608. Answer "A" is
"You bet."Copy !req
609. "I will absolutely be seeking
a second term.Copy !req
610. "I'm looking forward
to the campaign.Copy !req
611. There is great work
that is yet to be done."Copy !req
612. Yes.Copy !req
613. Answer "B"...
"Are you out
of your mind?Copy !req
614. "I can't possibly
win reelection.Copy !req
615. "I lied about
a degenerative illnessCopy !req
616. "I'm the targetCopy !req
617. "of a Grand Jury
investigationCopy !req
618. "and Congress is aboutCopy !req
619. "to take me out to lunch.Copy !req
620. "I'd sooner have my family
take their clothes offCopy !req
621. "and dance the tarantella
on the Truman BalconyCopy !req
622. "than go through a campaignCopy !req
623. with this
around my neck."Copy !req
624. Think that's too on the nose?Copy !req
625. I do.Copy !req
626. I want to
bring it up again.
Why?Copy !req
627. 'Cause I got shouted
down the first three timesCopy !req
628. and I work here
just like you do.Copy !req
629. Can I help you?Copy !req
630. Sorry.Copy !req
631. I think we have to explore ways
of calling this off.Copy !req
632. Sam...
I think it might
be a mistakeCopy !req
633. to send him on
at a momentCopy !req
634. when we're trying
to demonstrate...
Listen...Copy !req
635. We don't know what the hellCopy !req
636. they're talking
about in there, Toby!Copy !req
637. We don't know
whether he's running or not.Copy !req
638. I think we have...
There are no ways.Copy !req
639. The story's leakedCopy !req
640. it's out there,
we're doing this.Copy !req
641. Don't worry.
It's going to be fine.Copy !req
642. They're lighting himCopy !req
643. from outside the window.Copy !req
644. Toby.Copy !req
645. I have a meeting,
believe it or notCopy !req
646. with Greg SummerhaysCopy !req
647. for reasons passing
understanding.Copy !req
648. Hello.Copy !req
649. Toby.Copy !req
650. It's good to see you.Copy !req
651. How are you, Greg?Copy !req
652. I was sorry about
the President's secretary.Copy !req
653. Thank you.Copy !req
654. Did you know her well?Copy !req
655. Yeah.Copy !req
656. Let me get to why I'm here.Copy !req
657. I want to...Copy !req
658. You want to buy
Atlantic Intermedia.Copy !req
659. Yeah...Copy !req
660. Greg, there's a reason
the FCC...Copy !req
661. I'm not here about the FCC.Copy !req
662. Why are you here?Copy !req
663. I'm launching a 24-hour
cable news channelCopy !req
664. and I'm building it to compete.Copy !req
665. And I'd like you
to be the news director.Copy !req
666. Okay.Copy !req
667. Thanks for coming in.Copy !req
668. Excuse me.Copy !req
669. It was a nice service,
don't you think?Copy !req
670. Yeah.Copy !req
671. Yeah, it was.Copy !req
672. I'm going to run
across the streetCopy !req
673. to the OEOB
for a minute.Copy !req
674. The President's still
after information
on the storm.Copy !req
675. I'm not sure why he's
got it in his teeth.Copy !req
676. Yeah.Copy !req
677. Josh, can this really
be how it works?Copy !req
678. We have no idea if
he's going to run againCopy !req
679. he's in a room with
Leo making a decision?Copy !req
680. Two people, in
a matter of minutes?Copy !req
681. This is how it works?Copy !req
682. It's how it works today.Copy !req
683. Josh Lyman.Copy !req
684. It's Leo.Copy !req
685. Hey, Toby.Copy !req
686. Don't anybody talk to me
right now.Copy !req
687. Josh, Greg SummerhaysCopy !req
688. was here
to offer me a job.Copy !req
689. Leo got me a lifeboat.Copy !req
690. I'm going to rip
his arms offCopy !req
691. and beat him
with his own...Copy !req
692. That was Leo.Copy !req
693. He wants us over there.Copy !req
694. It's Answer "B."Copy !req
695. and First Lady
having just concludedCopy !req
696. the interviewCopy !req
697. President Bartlet
is expected to be arrivingCopy !req
698. at the State Department
for a press conference.Copy !req
699. Typically, a press conference,
particularly of this sizeCopy !req
700. would be held in the East Room
of the White HouseCopy !req
701. but we're told there are
some repairs going on thereCopy !req
702. and so the change of venue.Copy !req
703. Chris Watson, can you tell us
what we might expect to hearCopy !req
704. from the President
in a few minutes?Copy !req
705. Wait. All right.Copy !req
706. Our apologies.Copy !req
707. We'll have Chris in a moment.Copy !req
708. Let's go to...Copy !req
709. Why don't you sit in here
for a few minutes?Copy !req
710. Yeah.Copy !req
711. I'm going to get C.J.Copy !req
712. You two do a last-minute review.Copy !req
713. I'm fine.Copy !req
714. I'm going to get C.J.Copy !req
715. Yeah.Copy !req
716. Sit here.Copy !req
717. Close your eyes
a few minutes.Copy !req
718. Charlie will get you
when we're ready.Copy !req
719. Yeah.Copy !req
720. Two years agoCopy !req
721. I began experiencing
blurred visionCopy !req
722. and numbness in my legs.Copy !req
723. Two years and many tests laterCopy !req
724. I was diagnosed with a courseCopy !req
725. of relapsing/remitting
multiple sclerosis.Copy !req
726. That startling admissionCopy !req
727. made just moments ago
from President Bartlet.Copy !req
728. Toby.
Yeah?Copy !req
729. Where's C.J.?Copy !req
730. She ran back
to her office.Copy !req
731. They're going to run
this clip forever.Copy !req
732. No, we're about to give them
clips to beat it.Copy !req
733. Leo, you got me a lifeboat?Copy !req
734. Greg Summerhays.Copy !req
735. Yeah.Copy !req
736. Yeah.Copy !req
737. I got you a lifeboat.Copy !req
738. Did you imagineCopy !req
739. that there were
any circumstancesCopy !req
740. under which I would use it?Copy !req
741. No.Copy !req
742. Then why?Copy !req
743. To show him that.Copy !req
744. C.J.'s in her office.Copy !req
745. You think he's
going to change his
mind, don't you?Copy !req
746. Hmm?Copy !req
747. You think he's
going to run.Copy !req
748. C.J.'s in her office.Copy !req
749. Yeah.Copy !req
750. Yeah?Copy !req
751. Mr. President,
you wanted to
see Donna Moss?Copy !req
752. Yeah.Copy !req
753. Good evening, sir.
How are you?Copy !req
754. Fine, thank you, sir.Copy !req
755. We all thought
you did very well.Copy !req
756. That was the easy part.Copy !req
757. Didn't look that easy.Copy !req
758. Talk about the weather.Copy !req
759. A tropical storm
is a cycloneCopy !req
760. in which the maximum
sustained surface
speed of the windCopy !req
761. is 34 nautical
miles per hour.Copy !req
762. And there's a tropical storm
season, right?Copy !req
763. Yes, sir— it's June 1
to November 30.Copy !req
764. Okay, and how many times,
say, in the last 100 yearsCopy !req
765. has a tropical stormCopy !req
766. come up
the Atlantic seaboardCopy !req
767. to Washington
in the middle of May?Copy !req
768. According to
the National OceanicCopy !req
769. and Atmospheric AdministrationCopy !req
770. it hasn't happened
in the last century.Copy !req
771. At all?
No, sir.Copy !req
772. Yeah?Copy !req
773. C.J.:
Excuse me, sir.Copy !req
774. Yeah, thanks, Donna.Copy !req
775. Thank you, Mr. President.Copy !req
776. According to the NOAA,
the storm isCopy !req
777. a nonrecurring phenomenon,
which is science's termCopy !req
778. for "We don't know
what in the world is going onCopy !req
779. but we're stocking up
on canned goods."Copy !req
780. I just wanted to
review a few things.Copy !req
781. Is this stuff you don't think
I can remember from an hour ago?Copy !req
782. You'll want to take
the first question
from Lawrence AltmanCopy !req
783. the Times Chief
Medical Correspondent.Copy !req
784. Why?
!
Because if you
call on anyone elseCopy !req
785. the first question will
be about reelection.Copy !req
786. Call on Altman; it'll
be a medical questionCopy !req
787. and he'll have two
or three follow-ups.Copy !req
788. It will allow you
to feel comfortableCopy !req
789. a little before you start
with the political mess.Copy !req
790. Altman will be in
the front row, first
seat on your right.Copy !req
791. Okay.Copy !req
792. Mr. President?Copy !req
793. Yeah?Copy !req
794. Where's Altman going to be?Copy !req
795. C.J.Copy !req
796. Mr. President,
I'm going there right now.Copy !req
797. This is the last time
I'll see youCopy !req
798. before you step up. Please.Copy !req
799. Front row, first
seat on the right.Copy !req
800. Whose right?Copy !req
801. My right.Copy !req
802. Thank you, sir.Copy !req
803. DR.
Come in.Copy !req
804. "If you hide your ignorance,
no one will hit youCopy !req
805. and you will never learn."Copy !req
806. Is this your quote?Copy !req
807. Dad, I wanted to mention
something to youCopy !req
808. that maybe you
weren't aware ofCopy !req
809. regarding
salary equity.Copy !req
810. Is this your quote?Copy !req
811. "If you hide your ignorance,
no one will hit youCopy !req
812. and you'll never learn."Copy !req
813. It's actually Ray Bradbury.Copy !req
814. And you quoted Ray Bradbury.Copy !req
815. Yes.
In an articleCopy !req
816. you and your friends wrote
condemning Professor Loomis.Copy !req
817. For banning certain books
from the library, yeah.Copy !req
818. He's a professor of literature.Copy !req
819. He banned
Henry Miller.Copy !req
820. He banned D.H. Lawrence.Copy !req
821. Giovanni's Room
'cause it's too homosexual.Copy !req
822. Stop it right now.Copy !req
823. You're a guest at this school.Copy !req
824. I'm a student.Copy !req
825. He banned Fahrenheit 451Copy !req
826. which is about banning books.Copy !req
827. Was that supposed
to be funny?Copy !req
828. That wordplay
that you just
did there—Copy !req
829. was that meant
to be funny?Copy !req
830. That was supposed...Copy !req
831. Was there anything else?Copy !req
832. It's not
a nondenominational service.Copy !req
833. Don't start with this.Copy !req
834. Catholics don't believe man
is saved through faith alone.Copy !req
835. Catholics believe that
faith has to be joinedCopy !req
836. with good works.Copy !req
837. You're the only one
who seems to mind the service.Copy !req
838. I'm the only one who's Catholic.Copy !req
839. You're Catholic
because your mother isCopy !req
840. and you're at this school
because I'm the headmaster.Copy !req
841. How's that
for clever with words?Copy !req
842. Now, what was it
you came in hereCopy !req
843. to talk to me about?Copy !req
844. Nothing.Copy !req
845. Please close the door
behind you.Copy !req
846. Damn it!Copy !req
847. Mrs. Landingham!Copy !req
848. I really wish you
wouldn't shout, Mr. President.Copy !req
849. The door keeps blowing open.Copy !req
850. Yes, but there's an intercom,
and you could use itCopy !req
851. to call me
at my desk.Copy !req
852. I was...
You don't knowCopy !req
853. how to use the intercom.Copy !req
854. It's not that
I don't know how to use it.Copy !req
855. It's just that ICopy !req
856. haven't learned yet.Copy !req
857. I have MS,
