1. Previously on The West Wing.Copy !req
2. Mr. President?Copy !req
3. G.W.! Blue! Blue!Copy !req
4. Josh...Copy !req
5. didn't you hear me
shouting for you?Copy !req
6. I need a doctor!Copy !req
7. Pulse/ox is 92 on 15 liters.Copy !req
8. I need to get
to New Hampshire.Copy !req
9. Josh, I'd like you
to come to Nashua,
New HampshireCopy !req
10. Thursday night
and hear Jed
Bartlet speak.Copy !req
11. I work for Senator Hoynes.Copy !req
12. Come to Nashua
Thursday night.Copy !req
13. Why?Copy !req
14. Because that's whatCopy !req
15. sons do for old friends
of their father's.Copy !req
16. If I see the real thing
in Nashua, should I tell you?Copy !req
17. You won't have to.Copy !req
18. Why?Copy !req
19. You've got a pretty
bad poker face.Copy !req
20. Two shooters in that window.Copy !req
21. We got them both from the roof,
but there was a signal.Copy !req
22. There was somebody
on the ground?Copy !req
23. White male, 20, 25,
maybe five-ten.Copy !req
24. The White House is telling usCopy !req
25. that there will be a press
conference at 7:30 Eastern.Copy !req
26. That's about four hours
from now.Copy !req
27. Deputy White House
Chief of StaffCopy !req
28. Joshua Lyman
is currently undergoingCopy !req
29. extensive surgery
to repair a collapsed lungCopy !req
30. and to remove a bullet
that remains lodgedCopy !req
31. in his thoracic region.Copy !req
32. Now, for an update
on his conditionCopy !req
33. let's go live now
to Lynn BlakelyCopy !req
34. who's standing by
at George Washington Hospital.Copy !req
35. She's got the latest for us.Copy !req
36. Wait. We're not going
to Lynn just yet.Copy !req
37. Now, I'm being told that
authorities are reportingCopy !req
38. another gunshot victim,
a woman who had...Copy !req
39. FBI!Copy !req
40. Let me see those hands!Copy !req
41. Police! Hold it right there!Copy !req
42. Get down!Copy !req
43. Get on the ground!Copy !req
44. Get all the way down!Copy !req
45. Get on the ground!Copy !req
46. Get on the ground!Copy !req
47. Get on the ground!Copy !req
48. that a suspect has been taken
into custodyCopy !req
49. and is being questioned
by Federal law enforcement.Copy !req
50. At this time, we cannot,
we are not releasingCopy !req
51. any information whatsoever
about the suspect.Copy !req
52. C.J., can you tell us anything,
his name, where he's fromCopy !req
53. ethnicity, if you guys
suspect a motive?Copy !req
54. Yes, Steve, I can tell you
all those thingsCopy !req
55. because when I saidCopy !req
56. we weren't releasing
any information whatsoeverCopy !req
57. I meant except his name,
his address, his ethnicityCopy !req
58. and what we think
his motive was.Copy !req
59. C.J.!Copy !req
60. I am releasing the name
of Stephanie AbbottCopy !req
61. A-B-B-O-T-T, of Silver Spring,
Maryland, who was in the crowdCopy !req
62. and sustained an injury
to the left femurCopy !req
63. which is the thigh bone.Copy !req
64. The President remains
in stable conditionCopy !req
65. in the recovery roomCopy !req
66. and is expected to be released
sometime Wednesday.Copy !req
67. Josh Lyman is now in hisCopy !req
68. sixth hour of surgery
to repair a collapsed lungCopy !req
69. and a ruptured pulmonary artery.Copy !req
70. We likely won't have an update
on his conditionCopy !req
71. until the procedure is completeCopy !req
72. which they expect won't be
for another six or eight hours.Copy !req
73. We'll keep you updated
in the next hour.Copy !req
74. Thank you very much.Copy !req
75. Ma'am, does
the President knowCopy !req
76. they've arrested
a suspect?Copy !req
77. Yes. I told him.Copy !req
78. He's pretty groggyCopy !req
79. after the anesthesia.Copy !req
80. Sam. Toby. You've
got a phone callCopy !req
81. in the other room.Copy !req
82. Donna...Copy !req
83. do you want to throw
some water on your face?Copy !req
84. You know, I... I should ask:Copy !req
85. Is there anything I'm supposed
to be doing right now?Copy !req
86. No.Copy !req
87. I mean anything
that Josh's officeCopy !req
88. is supposed to be doing?Copy !req
89. Should I be making sure
it's farmed out?Copy !req
90. No. I'm sure
it's covered.Copy !req
91. You got them
on the phone?
Yeah.Copy !req
92. Guys?Copy !req
93. Yeah, we're here.Copy !req
94. Sam, I need you to come back
to the White HouseCopy !req
95. and speak to Nancy McNally
about a letter the PresidentCopy !req
96. was supposed to sign.Copy !req
97. She'll know
what you're talking about.Copy !req
98. Yeah, all right.Copy !req
99. And Toby?
Yeah?Copy !req
100. They're still asking
about the tent.Copy !req
101. Yeah.Copy !req
102. I'd be more comfortable
with the no commentCopy !req
103. coming from the Secret Service,
so...Copy !req
104. What's this?Copy !req
105. They want to know
why the PresidentCopy !req
106. exited the building
in the open air.Copy !req
107. I'll talk to somebody
at Treasury.Copy !req
108. I'll do it.
Let me.Copy !req
109. No.
Someone.Copy !req
110. Toby, we were all
in the meeting together.Copy !req
111. Go back to the office.Copy !req
112. Okay. Okay.Copy !req
113. Can the ships pass inspection?Copy !req
114. The ships will
be registered in
Libya and PanamaCopy !req
115. so they won't be subject
to the O.P.A.Copy !req
116. which wouldn't allow
an American companyCopy !req
117. to keep a tanker like this
in service very long.Copy !req
118. I think 2017.Copy !req
119. I think 2015,
and we'll check thatCopy !req
120. but you get the idea.Copy !req
121. I think all that's left,
then, is to dot the Ts, huh?Copy !req
122. Actually,
I have a thing.Copy !req
123. I have a thing
I was going to mention.Copy !req
124. Just a proposal
to throw out there.Copy !req
125. When I was
a Congressional aideCopy !req
126. we had an expression:Copy !req
127. "No idea was too stupid
to say out loud."Copy !req
128. So here it is, and bear me out:Copy !req
129. Instead of buying these ships,
don't buy these ships.Copy !req
130. Buy other ships.
Buy better ships.Copy !req
131. That's my idea.Copy !req
132. What's he talking about?Copy !req
133. That's a perfectly fair
question, Sam.Copy !req
134. What the hell
are you talking about?Copy !req
135. And the good news is,
we have a no-penalty clauseCopy !req
136. we can exercise if we pull out
before the first of December.Copy !req
137. But, Sam, we want
these ships.Copy !req
138. This is as little
as we've ever paid
for a fleet.Copy !req
139. Well, there's a reason why
they don't cost a lot of money.Copy !req
140. They're 20-year-old,
single-hulled VLCCs
that nobody else wants.Copy !req
141. When they hit things,
they will breakCopy !req
142. and they will hit things
because they don't haveCopy !req
143. state-of-the-art
navigation systems.Copy !req
144. They don't have
G-3 tank gaugingCopy !req
145. or EM-5000
engine monitoringCopy !req
146. the recommended staletronic
or electropneumatic ballast.Copy !req
147. And yesterday he didn't knowCopy !req
148. the difference
between a ship and a boat.Copy !req
149. Sam, I thought
you told usCopy !req
150. you covered our liability.Copy !req
151. I did. Strictly speaking, I did.Copy !req
152. But there's a broader liability
to think about.Copy !req
153. People drove past Exxon stations
after Valdez.Copy !req
154. We've got P.R. firms
for P.R. problems.Copy !req
155. There's a Suez tanker
ready to launchCopy !req
156. in the Koje Island Shipyard
in Korea.Copy !req
157. Chevron just dropped
the option.Copy !req
158. It's sitting in a cradle.
Let's go get it.Copy !req
159. Sam, could I talk to you
for a second?Copy !req
160. 308,000 deadweight tons,
carries 2.2 million gallons.Copy !req
161. You can have it today
for 46 million.Copy !req
162. Sam?Copy !req
163. $46 million?Copy !req
164. That's a good price.Copy !req
165. Sam, what are you doing?Copy !req
166. I think I have
an obligation.Copy !req
167. What are you doing?Copy !req
168. Maybe they want
to buy safer boatsCopy !req
169. but we never gave
them the option.Copy !req
170. Are you trying
to get fired?Copy !req
171. Maybe they're really
going to thank usCopy !req
172. for this suggestion.Copy !req
173. Knock it off, Sam.Copy !req
174. Look...
Knock it off!Copy !req
175. I'm looking, uh, operator...Copy !req
176. I'm looking for the number
of a law firm in Manhattan.Copy !req
177. Here's the thing:Copy !req
178. I can't quite remember
the name of the firm...Copy !req
179. No, wait, wait, wait!Copy !req
180. I just got back
from New HampshireCopy !req
181. where I saw this guy,
and now I have to...Copy !req
182. Listen, it's a very famous firm.Copy !req
183. They handled Shearson.Copy !req
184. You must know...Copy !req
185. Okay. You know what?Copy !req
186. I'm just going...Copy !req
187. Okay. Bye.Copy !req
188. Aah!Copy !req
189. That's amortized over...Copy !req
190. 15 years.Copy !req
191. Pretax?Copy !req
192. Sam?Copy !req
193. Hmm?Copy !req
194. 15-year pretax
amortization?Copy !req
195. 11 million extra dollars.Copy !req
196. We're back to this.
Money will be spent.Copy !req
197. You can spend it now
or spend it laterCopy !req
198. but it's cheaper
to spend it now.Copy !req
199. Sam...
It's also the
right thing to do.Copy !req
200. Spend 11 million
extra dollars.
Sam...Copy !req
201. Spend it on
a better boat.
Damn it!Copy !req
202. The Amoco Cadiz:
68 million gallonsCopy !req
203. of crude oil
off Brittany, France.Copy !req
204. Braer, a Liberian tankerCopy !req
205. 26 million gallons
off the Shetland Islands.Copy !req
206. I just pulled these off
the Internet last night.Copy !req
207. The Exxon Valdez,
the Aegean Sea,
The Argo Merchant—Copy !req
208. Look it up.
I'm sure they're...Copy !req
209. Spend 11 million
extra dollars.
Sam, that's enough.Copy !req
210. You don't want
to pay for it?Copy !req
211. Sam!
Pass the expense
on us.Copy !req
212. A half a penny
at the tank.
Here's five bucks.Copy !req
213. Sam!
A thousand people
are on me.Copy !req
214. Sam, we are
in the middle of a meeting.Copy !req
215. Yeah.Copy !req
216. Sam, we're not indifferent
to the concerns of the
environmentalists...Copy !req
217. Excuse me, Sam?Copy !req
218. Yeah.Copy !req
219. It doesn't quite feel like
I have your attention.Copy !req
220. Yeah?Copy !req
221. Yeah.Copy !req
222. Yeah.Copy !req
223. I'm not going to need that.Copy !req
224. Sam?Copy !req
225. Sam?Copy !req
226. Sam, please keep your seat.Copy !req
227. Sam, where are you going?Copy !req
228. New Hampshire!Copy !req
229. If you'll just follow me.Copy !req
230. Sam.
Yeah.Copy !req
231. I wanted to see if...Copy !req
232. How's your head?
Oh, fine.Copy !req
233. I wanted to see if you
talked to Nancy McNally.Copy !req
234. Yeah, and she talked
to Counsel's OfficeCopy !req
235. and they're going
to work on a few thingsCopy !req
236. to see what we like,
but I can tell you...Copy !req
237. Sam, you didn't
happen to notice...Copy !req
238. When the shooting started,
you didn't happen to noticeCopy !req
239. who pulled me to
the ground, did you?Copy !req
240. They pulled me down
No. behind a police carCopy !req
241. and my necklace
came off.Copy !req
242. Oh.Copy !req
243. You talked to
Nancy McNally?Copy !req
244. Yeah.
Okay.Copy !req
245. Oh, C.J.--
Yeah.Copy !req
246. You need to call back
Debbie at the Today Show.
Why?Copy !req
247. We said you might be willing
to do the morning showsCopy !req
248. when they go on
the air at 7:00.Copy !req
249. No, that's
not a good...
They just wanted...Copy !req
250. I'm not going to do
any interviews just yet.Copy !req
251. I'm not doing it.Copy !req
252. I'll take care of it.
Which one
of our people...Copy !req
253. It was a mistake.
I'll take care of it.Copy !req
254. C.J.?
Yeah.Copy !req
255. I really don't want
to be this guy, so...Copy !req
256. Somebody around here thought
I should do the morning shows.Copy !req
257. I still don't
have an answer.Copy !req
258. Who was in charge?Copy !req
259. 31/2 hours, the
President
was under anesthesia.Copy !req
260. Danny, it's...
a little complicated.Copy !req
261. There's something called the
National Security Act of 1947.Copy !req
262. There's the 25th.Copy !req
263. Nancy McNally, Bill Hutchinson,
the White House CounselCopy !req
264. they're all working on it
right now.Copy !req
265. Yeah, but they're
going to tell meCopy !req
266. who was supposed
to be in charge.Copy !req
267. I want to know
who was in charge.Copy !req
268. And we are working
on that information.Copy !req
269. We're working on it.Copy !req
270. Hello?Copy !req
271. Yeah.Copy !req
272. Isobel, it's 6:30
in the morning.Copy !req
273. Yeah.Copy !req
274. Excuse me. C.J.'s here.Copy !req
275. Thank you.Copy !req
276. Good morning, Isobel.Copy !req
277. Hello, Roger.Copy !req
278. I asked her to be
here 45 minutes ago.Copy !req
279. I'm sorry.Copy !req
280. I said,
I asked you...Copy !req
281. Roger...
It was 6:30
in the morning.Copy !req
282. I wasn't quite ready for work,
but I am now.Copy !req
283. How can I help you?Copy !req
284. Are you aware that
the Golden Globe nominationsCopy !req
285. were announced this morning?Copy !req
286. I wasn't.Copy !req
287. Am I up for something?Copy !req
288. C.J., Atlantis only got
two nominations.Copy !req
289. For the entire studio.Copy !req
290. Best Comedy ScoreCopy !req
291. and Supporting Actor
for the kid.Copy !req
292. That's what $20,000
a month bought us.Copy !req
293. Roger, I think we
put together a very
aggressive campaign.Copy !req
294. Two nominations.Copy !req
295. That's two nominations more
than a lot of people got.Copy !req
296. Are you aware
that the newCopy !req
297. Premiere magazine list
is coming out Monday?Copy !req
298. The hundred most powerful
people in Hollywood.Copy !req
299. Yeah.Copy !req
300. Yes, I am.Copy !req
301. And I can tell you
that you're on itCopy !req
302. and congratulations,
and it must, you knowCopy !req
303. feel... good being
that powerful.Copy !req
304. I went from third to ninth.Copy !req
305. I dropped to ninth.
Do you know how that looks?Copy !req
306. Do you know how many other
people were ahead of me?Copy !req
307. Eight?Copy !req
308. Lady, you're...Copy !req
309. The movies were bad,
Roger. All of them.Copy !req
310. Even the little kid
was bad, but he's
a little kid.Copy !req
311. He had a couple
of scenesCopy !req
312. big eyeglasses,
little lisp.Copy !req
313. He's going to
the Golden Globes.Copy !req
314. You know why the New Coke
marketing campaign failed?Copy !req
315. Because nobody
liked New Coke.Copy !req
316. The movies were bad.Copy !req
317. If the movies
were unknown,
I could help you.Copy !req
318. But they weren't.Copy !req
319. They were just bad.Copy !req
320. Roger, would you excuse us
for just a second, please?Copy !req
321. Sorry I talked
to him like thatCopy !req
322. but did he really thinkCopy !req
323. he had The Maltese
Falcon out there?Copy !req
324. The thing is, C.J.,
he's big business for me.Copy !req
325. I'll apologize
to him, Isobel.Copy !req
326. I'll find someone
to make him Man
of the Year.Copy !req
327. I'll ask around
in Vegas.Copy !req
328. He wants you fired.Copy !req
329. He thinks you're
a smart-mouth.Copy !req
330. He's going to
pull his business
unless you fire me?Copy !req
331. This was never what you
wanted to be doing, C.J.Copy !req
332. You've always felt
it was beneath you.Copy !req
333. It is beneath me.Copy !req
334. C.J...
So take me off
film and television.Copy !req
335. I don't know anything
about it anyway.Copy !req
336. We have plenty
of accounts...Copy !req
337. I need to keep his business.
I'm sorry.Copy !req
338. You're firing me?Copy !req
339. I'm sorry.Copy !req
340. Out here in the hallway?Copy !req
341. C.J...
I need someone
to call me a cab.Copy !req
342. I'm sorry?Copy !req
343. I couldn't get my
contacts in this morningCopy !req
344. and I broke my glasses
getting out of the car.Copy !req
345. I can't drive
myself home.Copy !req
346. I need someone
to call me a cab.Copy !req
347. Could you call a taxi
for C.J., please?Copy !req
348. I have to go back in.Copy !req
349. Mmm.Copy !req
350. It was a bad
movie, Isobel.Copy !req
351. Yes, I need a taxi
to Beverly Hills, please.Copy !req
352. Hello?Copy !req
353. Hey, C.J.Copy !req
354. Who is that?Copy !req
355. It's me.Copy !req
356. Toby?Copy !req
357. Yeah.Copy !req
358. What the hell are you...?Copy !req
359. C.J., you fell
into the pool, there.Copy !req
360. I can't see.Copy !req
361. Yeah, well, maybeCopy !req
362. uh, kind of try and feel
your way to dry land.Copy !req
363. Want a hand?Copy !req
364. Shut up.Copy !req
365. Avert your eyes.Copy !req
366. What?Copy !req
367. I'm climbing
out of the pool.Copy !req
368. My clothes will be clingy.Copy !req
369. Avert your eyes.Copy !req
370. C.J., I really didn't
come here...Copy !req
371. Avert your eyes!Copy !req
372. Okay.Copy !req
373. Oh, turn around.Copy !req
374. I tried calling you
at your office.Copy !req
375. They said you were fired.Copy !req
376. Were you stealing things?Copy !req
377. Roger Becker dropped
from third most powerful
person in HollywoodCopy !req
378. to ninth most powerful person
in Hollywood.Copy !req
379. Does he still make the playoffs
or is the cutoff line...?Copy !req
380. They take it seriously.Copy !req
381. C.J., Jed Bartlet's
very impressed with you.Copy !req
382. He likes the
work you didCopy !req
383. with that girls' group
with the stupid name.Copy !req
384. Emily's List?
Yes.Copy !req
385. That girls' group
with the stupid name?
Yes.Copy !req
386. Emily's List.
Early money is like Yeast?Copy !req
387. It helps raise
the dough.
Yeah. I get it.Copy !req
388. They raise money
for women candidates.Copy !req
389. Early money is like yeast.Copy !req
390. It helps raise the dough...
for the candidates.Copy !req
391. I really do get it.Copy !req
392. Bartlet's impressed with me?Copy !req
393. Very impressed.Copy !req
394. And one of the big
keys to his game planCopy !req
395. is bringing you on
as Press Secretary.Copy !req
396. He's never heard
of me, has he?Copy !req
397. No.Copy !req
398. Toby...Copy !req
399. I'm here on instructions
from Leo McGarry.Copy !req
400. McGarry wants me?Copy !req
401. Yes. Come join the campaign.Copy !req
402. How much does it pay?Copy !req
403. How much were you
making before?Copy !req
404. $550,000 a year.Copy !req
405. This pays $600 a week.Copy !req
406. So this is less.
Yes.Copy !req
407. Toby... does he know
I've only ever worked statewide?Copy !req
408. Does he know I've never worked
on a national campaign?Copy !req
409. Yes. It's graduation day.Copy !req
410. You really think
I can do this?Copy !req
411. Yeah.Copy !req
412. Is Jed Bartlet a good man?Copy !req
413. Yeah.Copy !req
414. Toby?Copy !req
415. Yes.Copy !req
416. Then... let's go into the houseCopy !req
417. so I can change
my clothesCopy !req
418. and we'll talk about it.Copy !req
419. C.J.?
Yeah?Copy !req
420. The house is over there.Copy !req
421. Okay.Copy !req
422. One of them was usingCopy !req
423. a nine-millimeter Beretta.Copy !req
424. The other had a
.357 Desert Eagle.Copy !req
425. Ron's saying that these are
absolutely the wrong weaponsCopy !req
426. to use for a shooting
of this kindCopy !req
427. and that's why the injury count
was as low as it was.Copy !req
428. We don't know
what the injury count is yet.Copy !req
429. ( door opens )
Yeah, but his point is...Copy !req
430. Excuse me, sir.Copy !req
431. I was told
you wanted to see me.Copy !req
432. Yeah.Copy !req
433. Charlie, the guy the Secret
Service have in custodyCopy !req
434. is named Carl LeRoy.Copy !req
435. He gives a statement
in which he saysCopy !req
436. that he and the two shooters
were members of an organizationCopy !req
437. called West Virginia
White Pride.Copy !req
438. They tried to kill the President
'cause Zoey and I are together?Copy !req
439. No.Copy !req
440. Why did...?Copy !req
441. Charlie, the President
wasn't the target.Copy !req
442. According to
the statementCopy !req
443. the President
wasn't the target.Copy !req
444. Oh.Copy !req
445. Okay.Copy !req
446. Okay, well...Copy !req
447. Okay.Copy !req
448. Thank you, Mr. President.Copy !req
449. Sure.Copy !req
450. Dad, I'm going to...Copy !req
451. Go.Copy !req
452. We don't know
what the injury
count is yet.Copy !req
453. He was supposed
to sign a letter?Copy !req
454. If the President is going
under general anesthesiaCopy !req
455. he usually signs a letterCopy !req
456. handing over executive powers
to the Vice President.Copy !req
457. And the President
didn't sign a letter?Copy !req
458. Nope. We blew that play.Copy !req
459. Is there going
to be trouble?Copy !req
460. We'll see.Copy !req
461. To be honest with youCopy !req
462. I don't really care
right now.Copy !req
463. Can... can I just say something,
you know, for the future?Copy !req
464. Yeah.Copy !req
465. I can sign the President's name.Copy !req
466. I have his signature downCopy !req
467. pretty good.Copy !req
468. You can sign
the President's name?Copy !req
469. Yeah.Copy !req
470. On a document
removing him from powerCopy !req
471. and handing it
to someone else?Copy !req
472. Yeah.Copy !req
473. Or do you think
the White House CounselCopy !req
474. would say that was a bad idea?Copy !req
475. I think the White House Counsel
would say that's a coup d'etat.Copy !req
476. Well, I'd probably end up
doing some time for that.Copy !req
477. I would think.Copy !req
478. Leo...
And what the hell
are you doingCopy !req
479. practicing
the President's signature?Copy !req
480. It's just for fun.Copy !req
481. We've got separation
of powersCopy !req
482. checks and balancesCopy !req
483. and Margaret vetoing thingsCopy !req
484. and sending them back
to the Hill.Copy !req
485. Leo, who thought
it was good idea
for me to do the morning shows?Copy !req
486. I did.Copy !req
487. Why?Copy !req
488. The President's not ready
for cameras.Copy !req
489. If it's the Vice PresidentCopy !req
490. it's going to look like
we don't have a president.Copy !req
491. And I'd like
the White HouseCopy !req
492. to start climbing out
from behind the bushes.Copy !req
493. I think it's a bad idea.Copy !req
494. Why?Copy !req
495. I just...Copy !req
496. it's inappropriate
while Josh... I thinkCopy !req
497. You know, until...Copy !req
498. What's wrong?Copy !req
499. Nothing.Copy !req
500. C.J...Copy !req
501. Nothing.Copy !req
502. I'd rather not do it,
but, obviously...Copy !req
503. Have Sam do it.Copy !req
504. Okay.Copy !req
505. Listen,
the letter...Copy !req
506. Yeah.Copy !req
507. The 31/2 hours.Copy !req
508. I don't know
how much longer
I can dance around DannyCopy !req
509. and it's going to be Danny
times a hundred by lunchtime.Copy !req
510. Have him come see me.Copy !req
511. Yeah?Copy !req
512. Yeah.
Okay.Copy !req
513. She doesn't want to
do the morning shows.Copy !req
514. She says she's been getting
a couple questionsCopy !req
515. about why the President
exited in the open air.Copy !req
516. They remember that
the Secret ServiceCopy !req
517. used to construct
a tent or a canopy.Copy !req
518. I'm going to talk
to Ron Butterfield.Copy !req
519. He's going to say
the Secret ServiceCopy !req
520. doesn't comment
on procedure.Copy !req
521. I know, but maybe I
can talk him out of it.Copy !req
522. I... I should
try anyway.Copy !req
523. You don't have to, Toby.Copy !req
524. Yeah. I should, though.Copy !req
525. Okay.Copy !req
526. won the non-binding
straw pollCopy !req
527. pulling in 48% of the vote.Copy !req
528. Senator William Wiley
of Washington StateCopy !req
529. drew a poorer-than-expected
22% of the vote.Copy !req
530. But the story this morning
is the 19% of the voteCopy !req
531. picked up by former New
Hampshire Governor Jed BartletCopy !req
532. who leapfrogged several
Democratic candidatesCopy !req
533. to finish a surprising third.Copy !req
534. And we're going to go now
to Governor BartletCopy !req
535. who's standing by live...Copy !req
536. Okay, I'm told we don't have
the Governor at this moment.Copy !req
537. So, while we try...Copy !req
538. Okay, who can tell me
what we did wrong there?Copy !req
539. I blew it.
What's next?Copy !req
540. "We didn't have
the candidate."Copy !req
541. That's right.
Anybody who answered...Copy !req
542. What's next?Copy !req
543. Toby wants to say something.Copy !req
544. Which one is Toby?Copy !req
545. I am.Copy !req
546. And which one are you?Copy !req
547. I'm Josh.Copy !req
548. What was it you wanted to say?Copy !req
549. Let's get out
of New Hampshire.Copy !req
550. Why?Copy !req
551. Nothing to win here.Copy !req
552. He's right.Copy !req
553. The New Hampshire primaryCopy !req
554. isn't held
in New Hampshire anymore?Copy !req
555. You can't win
the New Hampshire primary.Copy !req
556. I'm going to win
the New Hampshire primary.Copy !req
557. Which is why you can't win it.Copy !req
558. You're incredibly popular
in this state.Copy !req
559. You're a Democrat who was
elected with 69% of the vote.Copy !req
560. That's unheard of.Copy !req
561. There's no way you can
exceed expectations.Copy !req
562. All you can hope for
is an "as expected"Copy !req
563. and there's the possibility
you can embarrass yourself.Copy !req
564. I appreciate that. Thanks.Copy !req
565. Toby meant the polls.Copy !req
566. I know what he meant.Copy !req
567. So Hoynes will
be in a fightCopy !req
568. with Wiley for a strong second
place finish in New Hampshire.Copy !req
569. Meantime, we're going
to be in South CarolinaCopy !req
570. and we're going
to be the only
ones there.Copy !req
571. We won't beat Hoynes
in South Carolina.Copy !req
572. We don't have to beat Hoynes
in South Carolina.Copy !req
573. We just have to beat Wiley.Copy !req
574. Wiley's going to drop out
after South Carolina?Copy !req
575. If he doesn't finish
higher than third.Copy !req
576. Are we going to get
his endorsement?Copy !req
577. We're going to get his money,
that's for sure.Copy !req
578. It's for sure?Copy !req
579. Josh thinks it is.Copy !req
580. Which one is Josh?Copy !req
581. I am.Copy !req
582. Okay.Copy !req
583. So, we finish second
in South CarolinaCopy !req
584. we pick up some steam,
some endorsements—Copy !req
585. mostly some money,
going into South Dakota,
Vermont and Maine.Copy !req
586. Where we'll come away
with a split, maybe better.Copy !req
587. Now the prohibitive nominee
for the Democratic nominationCopy !req
588. has lost three of the
first seven contests...Copy !req
589. And half the actual primaries.Copy !req
590. leading
into Super Tuesday.Copy !req
591. Hoynes will
win the South.Copy !req
592. We'll take the North
and the Pacific Northwest.Copy !req
593. This race will be decided
a week later in Illinois.Copy !req
594. Illinois's going
to be High Noon.Copy !req
595. do we have a shot at California
Sam, iand New York? llinoisCopy !req
596. If we win in Illinois,
we're going to run the table.Copy !req
597. Well, that's it, then.Copy !req
598. And we've saved people
the trouble of voting.Copy !req
599. What's next?Copy !req
600. Our point is that it's...Copy !req
601. I understood
the point.Copy !req
602. We're going to
South Carolina
to set up Illinois.Copy !req
603. When I ask what's nextCopy !req
604. it means I'm
ready to move on
to other things.Copy !req
605. So, what's next?Copy !req
606. We're done.Copy !req
607. Fantastic.Copy !req
608. Well, I feel bathed
in the warm embrace
of the candidate, Leo.Copy !req
609. He's really
very easy to likeCopy !req
610. once you get
to know him.Copy !req
611. How many people
get that far?Copy !req
612. Not that many.Copy !req
613. Okay.Copy !req
614. Josh Lyman.Copy !req
615. No, he's not
available right now.Copy !req
616. This afternoon
he's got a media sessionCopy !req
617. and then a 4:00 with finance.Copy !req
618. If you leave your name,
I can give Josh the messageCopy !req
619. when he gets back.Copy !req
620. Thank you very much.Copy !req
621. Hi.Copy !req
622. Hi.
Who are you?Copy !req
623. I'm Donna Moss.
Who are you?Copy !req
624. I'm Josh Lyman.Copy !req
625. Ah.Copy !req
626. Yes.Copy !req
627. I'm your new assistant.Copy !req
628. Did I have an old assistant?Copy !req
629. Maybe not.Copy !req
630. Who are you?
I'm Donna Moss.Copy !req
631. I came in to volunteerCopy !req
632. and the woman
assigned me to you.Copy !req
633. Which woman?
Betsy.Copy !req
634. You mean Margaret?
Yes.Copy !req
635. Who are you?
I'm Donna Moss.Copy !req
636. I'll be working
as your assistant.Copy !req
637. I'm going to talk
to Margaret.Copy !req
638. Actually, Josh...
Yeah?Copy !req
639. When I said I was
assigned to you
Yeah?Copy !req
640. I may have been
overstating it
a little.Copy !req
641. Who are you?Copy !req
642. I'm Donna Moss.Copy !req
643. I drove here from
Madison, Wisconsin.Copy !req
644. When did your boyfriend
break up with you?Copy !req
645. What makes you think
my boyfriend broke
up with me?Copy !req
646. Well, you're too old
for your parentsCopy !req
647. to have kicked you out
of the house.Copy !req
648. I'm here because I want
to work for Bartlet.Copy !req
649. I'm a college graduate
with a degreeCopy !req
650. in Political Science
and Government.Copy !req
651. Where did you graduate?Copy !req
652. Hmm?Copy !req
653. Where did you graduate?Copy !req
654. Okay, when I said
I graduatedCopy !req
655. Yeah?Copy !req
656. I may have been
overstating a little.Copy !req
657. I was a couple
of credits short.Copy !req
658. From where?Copy !req
659. University
of Wisconsin.Copy !req
660. And you majored
in Political Science
and Government?Copy !req
661. And, uh... Sociology
and Psychology.
Uh-huh.Copy !req
662. And Biology for a while
with a minor in French.Copy !req
663. Okay.Copy !req
664. And, uh, Drama.Copy !req
665. You had five majors
and two minors
in four years?Copy !req
666. Two years.Copy !req
667. Uh, listen...Copy !req
668. I had to drop out.Copy !req
669. I had to drop out.Copy !req
670. Your boyfriend was
older than you?Copy !req
671. I think that question's
of a personal nature.Copy !req
672. Donna, you were
just at my deskCopy !req
673. reading my calendar,
answering my phoneCopy !req
674. and hoping I wouldn't notice
that I never hired you.Copy !req
675. Your boyfriend was older?Copy !req
676. Yes.Copy !req
677. Law student?
Medical student.Copy !req
678. The idea was you'd drop
out and pay the billsCopy !req
679. till he's done
with his residency.Copy !req
680. Yes.
And did you?Copy !req
681. And why did Dr. Freeride
break up with you?Copy !req
682. What makes you think
he broke up with me?Copy !req
683. Donna, this is a campaign
for the PresidencyCopy !req
684. and there's nothing I take
more seriously than that.Copy !req
685. This can't be a place
for people to comeCopy !req
686. to find their
confidence
and start over.Copy !req
687. Why not?
I'm sorry?Copy !req
688. Why can't it be
those things?Copy !req
689. Because...Copy !req
690. Is it going to interfere
with my typing?Copy !req
691. Donna, we're picking up today
and going to South Carolina.Copy !req
692. If you want to stay
in the Manchester office...Copy !req
693. I want to come to Charleston.Copy !req
694. I can't carry you, Donna.Copy !req
695. I've got a lot of guys out there
not making the trip.Copy !req
696. I'll pay my own way.Copy !req
697. With what?Copy !req
698. I'll sleep on the floor,
I'll sell my car.Copy !req
699. Eventually you're going
to put me on salary.Copy !req
700. Donna...Copy !req
701. Look, I think
I can be good at this.Copy !req
702. I think you might find me
valuable.Copy !req
703. Go ahead.Copy !req
704. Bartlet for America,
Josh Lyman's office.Copy !req
705. Uh, yes.Copy !req
706. I think I'm going to have
somebody from the press officeCopy !req
707. get back to you
if it relates to...Copy !req
708. Yes.Copy !req
709. Uh, yes.Copy !req
710. Yes.Copy !req
711. Yes.Copy !req
712. Suction.Copy !req
713. Pressure's holding:
131/65.Copy !req
714. Hey, Spanky.Copy !req
715. Oh, God, what'd I do?Copy !req
716. Take a walk with me,
would you?Copy !req
717. They're taking him
off bypass now.Copy !req
718. Yeah, I just heard.Copy !req
719. I'm going to head
to the hospital.Copy !req
720. You did well
on the morning shows.Copy !req
721. Thanks.Copy !req
722. I told Leo the reason
I didn't want to do itCopy !req
723. was it didn't feel right
with Josh still in surgery.Copy !req
724. Yeah.Copy !req
725. You know what
the real reason was?Copy !req
726. The real reason?Copy !req
727. Yeah.Copy !req
728. No.Copy !req
729. I think you do.Copy !req
730. Listen, C.J...
Suzanne.Copy !req
731. The real reason I couldn't
go on the morning showsCopy !req
732. and give a firsthand account
of what happenedCopy !req
733. was that I couldn't remember
what happened.Copy !req
734. I remember walking
out of the building.Copy !req
735. I remember somebody
knocking me down.Copy !req
736. I know my necklace came offCopy !req
737. and I know a police car window
exploded over my head.Copy !req
738. All night long, I've been
doing my press briefingsCopy !req
739. using notes from other
people's accounts.Copy !req
740. But it's morning now
and I listened to you
on the morning showsCopy !req
741. and I know what happened.Copy !req
742. C.J...
Sam...Copy !req
743. I think you have my necklace.Copy !req
744. I didn't want you to
feel beholden to me.Copy !req
745. I didn't want it to
be like an episodeCopy !req
746. of I Dream of JeannieCopy !req
747. where now you've
got to save my lifeCopy !req
748. and the time-space
continuumCopy !req
749. with you following
me aroundCopy !req
750. with coconut oil
and hot towels.Copy !req
751. Coconut oil?
I'm just saying.Copy !req
752. Sam, I don't feel
beholden to you.Copy !req
753. Why not?
I saved your life.Copy !req
754. Can I have
my necklace back?Copy !req
755. Thank you.Copy !req
756. I'll be in my office.Copy !req
757. Sam?Copy !req
758. Yeah.Copy !req
759. Were you scared?Copy !req
760. Yeah.Copy !req
761. Me, too.Copy !req
762. Thanks.Copy !req
763. Good morning.Copy !req
764. I have an updateCopy !req
765. and I can give you
a ballistics report.Copy !req
766. So, let's get started.Copy !req
767. Ron?Copy !req
768. Hey, Toby.Copy !req
769. I heard they're about
to take him off bypass.Copy !req
770. Pretty soon, yeah.Copy !req
771. Listen, can I talk
to you for a second?
Yeah.Copy !req
772. Sergeant, I want those
people on that cornerCopy !req
773. Yes, sir.
backed up another 200 feet.Copy !req
774. And if they move in againCopy !req
775. handcuff them
to a parking meter.Copy !req
776. How's your hand?Copy !req
777. It's fine.Copy !req
778. You should be home.Copy !req
779. What's on your mind?Copy !req
780. C.J.'s starting
to get some questionsCopy !req
781. about why the President's exit
wasn't covered in Rosslyn.Copy !req
782. Secret Service doesn't
comment on procedure.Copy !req
783. Yeah. Ron, a few weeks after
the President was sworn inCopy !req
784. you got a memo
about his protection.Copy !req
785. Yeah?Copy !req
786. It said, he wanted to enter
and exit in the open air.Copy !req
787. He didn't like the feelingCopy !req
788. of traveling around
in an armored tank.Copy !req
789. Yeah.Copy !req
790. Specifically, it saidCopy !req
791. he wouldn't use the tent
or the canopy anymore.Copy !req
792. Yeah.Copy !req
793. I wrote that memoCopy !req
794. and the President signed it
at my urging.Copy !req
795. I know.Copy !req
796. Ron, I don't think
it's rightCopy !req
797. that the Secret Service
be blamedCopy !req
798. for what happened last night.Copy !req
799. I want the Treasury DepartmentCopy !req
800. to hand over my memo
to the press.Copy !req
801. No, we can't do that.Copy !req
802. There are going to be
a lot of questions.Copy !req
803. There are always
a lot of questions.
Ron...Copy !req
804. Don't worry
about it, Toby.Copy !req
805. It's not right.
You're the guys...Copy !req
806. Look at your hand.
My hand is fine.Copy !req
807. Your hand is not fine.
Toby...Copy !req
808. Let me go over there
and tell them it was my fault.Copy !req
809. It wasn't your fault.Copy !req
810. Ron...
It wasn't
your fault.Copy !req
811. It wasn't
Gina's fault.Copy !req
812. It wasn't
Charlie's fault.Copy !req
813. It wasn't anybody's
fault, Toby.Copy !req
814. It was an
act of madmen.Copy !req
815. You think a tent was
going to stop them?Copy !req
816. We got the President
in a carCopy !req
817. we got Zoey
in the carCopy !req
818. and at 150 yards
and five stories upCopy !req
819. the shooters were
down in 9.2 secondsCopy !req
820. after the first
shot was fired.Copy !req
821. I would never let you
not let me protect
the President.Copy !req
822. You tell us you
don't like somethingCopy !req
823. we figure out
something else.Copy !req
824. It was an act of madmen.Copy !req
825. Anyway, the Secret
Service doesn't
comment on procedure.Copy !req
826. Okay.Copy !req
827. Good job last night.Copy !req
828. Thank you.Copy !req
829. Secret Service agents carry a
weapon called a.357 SIG-Sauer.Copy !req
830. The agents on the roof
shot the two gunmenCopy !req
831. with.726 caliber rifles
that are referred to as J.A.R.Copy !req
832. which, believe it or not, stands
for Just Another Rifle.Copy !req
833. They're made specifically
and exclusivelyCopy !req
834. for the Secret Service.Copy !req
835. I wanted to mention...
Leo?Copy !req
836. This is our fifth press briefing
since midnightCopy !req
837. and obviously there's one storyCopy !req
838. that's going to be dominating
the news around the worldCopy !req
839. for the next few daysCopy !req
840. and, uh, it would be easy
to think thatCopy !req
841. President Bartlet, Joshua Lyman
and Stephanie AbbottCopy !req
842. were the only people
who were victimsCopy !req
843. of a gun crime last night.Copy !req
844. They weren't.Copy !req
845. Marks Davis and Sheila Evans
of PhiladelphiaCopy !req
846. were killed by a gun last night.Copy !req
847. He was a biology teacher
and she was a nursing student.Copy !req
848. Tina Bishop and Belinda LarkinCopy !req
849. were killed with a gun
last night.Copy !req
850. They were 12.Copy !req
851. There were 36 homicides
last nightCopy !req
852. 480 sexual assaultsCopy !req
853. 3,411 robberiesCopy !req
854. 3,685 aggravated assaultsCopy !req
855. all at gunpoint.Copy !req
856. And if anyone thinks those
crimes could've been preventedCopy !req
