19. But I had an obligation to these singers

20. to see the competition through.

21. It won't be all celebration today for our talented singers.

22. Forty of the faces you see up here will be going home tonight.

23. But I was finding it hard to stay focused on the competition

24. with everything I'd been learning about these pilots.

27. Quin.

28. Unfortunately, you will not be advancing.

29. It was sort of shocking to discover

30. that no matter what a pilot is going through emotionally,

31. talking to a therapist about it

32. might lead to them losing their license.

33. So, during breaks in the competition,

34. I brought in actors posing as crew members

35. to casually engage co-pilots in conversation.

36. You look pretty young to be a pilot.

37. - Twenty-seven. Yeah. - Twenty-seven? Okay.

38. I would have guessed younger, actually.

39. I thought it might be nice to just give them a release valve,

40. in case they needed it.

41. - It's been a year since the breakup? - Yeah, yeah.

42. - Maybe a year and a half, yeah. - Did you guys live together?

43. - Yeah. For about a year, yeah. - Oh, wow.

44. I remember sitting there in my room, just...

45. - stunned. - Yeah.

46. You know, like, "How could that happen?"

47. I just want to be clear in case the FAA is watching.

48. This is in no way therapy.

49. This is just two people talking.

50. - It's not— I'm not unhappy... - Yeah.

51. but am I fulfilled?

57. I noticed one co-pilot

58. who was having an especially hard time

63. And when his dating life came up, he was very short on words.

64. Is that like an issue then,

65. in piloting? Where you're not able to like—

68. - Any dates recently or— - Nope. Doesn't really work out.

70. And I was curious to find out more.

71. I couldn't help but overhear you talking

72. with our boom operator, Lucas, one of our operators.

83. But Colin's struggle didn't surprise me.

87. Standing in complete silence moments before flying

89. Was this really how to start a healthy relationship

133. that the start of a romantic relationship

134. is a great parallel

135. for two pilots meeting before a flight.

137. I mean, I could probably just go without it for a day,

139. You become intimately involved with a stranger

140. where both people are desperately trying

141. to read each other,

142. but the pressure to show the best version of yourself

143. can prevent you from sharing what you actually feel.

333. and also had five male actors study Colin.

334. When you're not flying, what do you like to do?

338. These actors needed to learn everything

339. about this blossoming couple,

340. because I had a plan that was weeks in the making,

341. designed specifically to give Colin's new relationship

342. the best chance of success.

344. So, these are saltwater fish, and the one that looks like—

345. With five exact replicas of Colin's studio apartment

346. and five fake versions of him and Emma inside of it,

347. I could use this as a predictive tool

348. that would hopefully reveal every possible challenge

349. a new couple might face,

350. allowing Colin to have a sneak peek at his own life.

351. The actors were able to choose

352. their own scene partner for this experiment,

353. based on who they felt the most genuine chemistry with

354. as their real selves.

356. This was because I wanted them to decide on their own

357. how the relationships would organically evolve.

358. I actually get a little nervous sometimes when I fly.

361. That way, I could observe the challenges

362. the actors were encountering and that would tell me

363. what Colin would likely encounter with Emma.

367. I tried to give him, like, the eye, and he wasn't taking the hint.

506. were so far ahead of the real Colin and Emma,

507. they bore almost no resemblance.

508. But the actor's choice of how and when

509. to become intimate intrigued me.

510. Before the experiment began,

511. I had given the actors the freedom to not participate

512. if they felt they had a conflict of interest.

513. Yeah, I guess I should ask you guys

514. if either of you are in a relationship or anything

515. and you would want to opt out of this because of that.

516. - I don't know if that's something— - Oh, no—

517. Are either of you in a relationship?

522. But one of the actresses said something I couldn't shake.

523. When I'm like approaching, like, a love scene,

524. obviously I know it's not "real" real,

525. but, like, it was real

526. for like a minute. You know what I mean?

527. It's real for you when you're doing it?

528. Yeah, like it's happening while it's happening.

529. - But it's not "real" real. - Does that make sense? Yeah.

530. - Like the emotions feel real. - Yeah.

531. It feels like it's— I'm like, "Oh, I really, like...

534. And your boyfriend's like cool with all that?

538. This was confusing to me.

539. I recently acted in a dramatic series that aired on Paramount Plus,

540. a network with some questionable viewpoints.

541. In the show, I had to act as a husband

542. who was deeply in love with his wife.

543. - I'm so happy. - You are.

544. You are happy.

545. But even though I was mimicking the expressions of a man in love,

546. inside my head,

547. I didn't feel that at all for the actress playing my wife.

548. I was basically just copying the expressions

549. of other people in love that I had seen on TV and movies.

550. So I didn't understand how an actor can be feeling real love

551. in a completely fake relationship.

552. We had an intimacy coordinator on set

553. that the actors were free to consult with

554. before doing anything with each other.

555. So what did they say they wanted to do?

556. Well, they said that they've already kissed a lot,

557. so that's obviously okay with them.

558. Like, physically, they seem like they're really... comfortable.

559. You know she has a boyfriend, right?

560. In real life?

561. - Yeah. - Yeah.

562. She didn't mention it.

563. Oh, no, but I'm just saying, like...

564. Yeah.

565. It's weird, isn't it?

566. But it's one of those things that like actors get to do.

567. I know.

568. Because this wasn't a traditional acting role,

569. in an effort to maintain full transparency,

570. I encouraged the actors to invite

571. any significant others they might have

572. to come observe everything we were doing.

577. But we've known each other for longer than that.

581. I was realizing there's this magical thing that happens

582. when people say that they're acting.

602. And the actor gets a free pass for virtually any behavior.

603. Everything I'd been trying to do

604. just comes down to getting co-pilots and captains

605. to both act on their true feelings.

606. Either speaking up about their fears,

607. or admitting to your co-pilot that you might not know everything.

608. These are feelings that every pilot already has,

609. but many struggle to act upon

610. because they fear the consequences.

611. Could the concept of acting give pilots a loophole

612. to do the things they're most afraid of?

613. So have you ever acted before?

614. No, I haven't.

615. Is it something you'd be interested in giving a try?

616. Possibly.

617. So this scene will be mostly improv,

618. and your character is named Captain Powers

619. - in this, okay? - All right.

620. - A little funny, right? - Yeah.

621. And he's called that because he actually has a power,

622. which is that every date he goes on,

623. he has no problem asking for a kiss and then doing it. Okay?

624. And the other character is named Jennifer Kissme.

625. And Jennifer will be played by Emma.

626. - Okay. - Okay.

627. - Who's an actress, as you know. - Yeah.

628. All right. Well, let me go get your scene partner then.

630. For your character, just think about

631. where you're coming from,

632. what you're doing now, and where you're going.

633. Okay, I'm inviting this person back to my apartment.

634. Like, how do you feel about me as the character?

635. - Like, think about that. - Yep.

636. It's not that bad.
