1. Hello, I'm glad to see you today.
Copy !req
2. I'm certainly glad you could join me.
Copy !req
3. I thought today we'd do a fantastic little
painting that I really believe you'll
Copy !req
4. enjoy.
Copy !req
5. So let's start out and have them run all
the colors across the screen that you
Copy !req
6. need to do this painting with me.
Copy !req
7. And they'll come across as usual in the
same order as I have them on the palette, starting
Copy !req
8. with the white and working around.
Copy !req
9. Let's go on up here and let me tell you
what I've done.
Copy !req
10. I have a canvas here that's painted black,
as you can see.
Copy !req
11. Now we use a black gesso to paint this
black.
Copy !req
12. On top of that, I've allowed the black
to dry, of course.
Copy !req
13. On top of the black, then I've put some
Indian yellow here, a little bit of
Copy !req
14. alizarin crimson, and then some phthalo
blue.
Copy !req
15. And down here, I've just put a little bit
of Van Dyke brown around the edges.
Copy !req
16. I thought we'd do a pretty little scene
today I really believe you'll enjoy.
Copy !req
17. So let's start out.
Copy !req
18. I'm gonna take the old two-inch brush
and go right into a little bit of titanium
Copy !req
19. white, just plain old titanium white.
Copy !req
20. Just put some in the bristles like so.
Copy !req
21. Okay, let's go right up here.
Copy !req
22. Now today, right off, you have to make a
big decision.
Copy !req
23. Basically, where's the horizon gonna be?
Copy !req
24. That's the first decision.
Copy !req
25. So let's say it's gonna be right in here.
Copy !req
26. So let's just start making little criss-cross
strokes.
Copy !req
27. And there, look at what's happening.
Copy !req
28. See, it picks up all those beautiful
yellow colors underneath.
Copy !req
29. And as it works up, we're gonna get into
the alizarin crimson.
Copy !req
30. Mmm, I love these black canvases.
Copy !req
31. So fantastic.
Copy !req
32. And we'll just keep working right on up.
Copy !req
33. Now then, as you run out of white paint on
your brush, clean your brush.
Copy !req
34. We'll just scrub it off in the old bucket
here, give it a good shake.
Copy !req
35. And beat the devil out of it.
Copy !req
36. Now I'm going right back in here and put a
little bit more of the titanium white.
Copy !req
37. I want to brighten this up some.
Copy !req
38. So always start with a clean brush in the
light area and work upward.
Copy !req
39. Upward, upward, upward.
Copy !req
40. Okay.
Copy !req
41. Now I'm just adding a little more white, allowing
some of this blue to be picked up and the
Copy !req
42. crimsons and all the beautiful little
colors.
Copy !req
43. It's a fantastic way to make a happy
little sky.
Copy !req
44. There we go.
Copy !req
45. Now when you're preparing your canvas, as
I mentioned earlier, it's covered with
Copy !req
46. black gesso, and you can use black latex, but
latex is not designed to hold paint, so be
Copy !req
47. careful with that.
Copy !req
48. It'll work in a pinch, but if you have an
option, use a product that's designed
Copy !req
49. specifically for making canvases black.
Copy !req
50. Now then, with our nice clean brush, we
can just go back and blend all this
Copy !req
51. together.
Copy !req
52. Hope you got your sunglasses on today.
Copy !req
53. That's one wild sky.
Copy !req
54. You just wanna keep blending till you
can't tell where one color stops and the
Copy !req
55. next one starts.
Copy !req
56. Just bring it together very smooth.
Copy !req
57. About like so.
Copy !req
58. And very lightly go over it, take out all
the brush strokes.
Copy !req
59. And you got a happy little sky, that quick.
Copy !req
60. That quick.
Copy !req
61. Okay.
Copy !req
62. Let's have some fun.
Copy !req
63. Today we'll use the old round brush.
Copy !req
64. I'm gonna go right into some Van Dyke
Brown and Dark Sienna and just tap the
Copy !req
65. brush.
Copy !req
66. Just firmly tap it.
Copy !req
67. Just like so. There we go.
Copy !req
68. Okay, let's go right up here.
Copy !req
69. Now then, I wanna have some little trees
and stuff in the background here.
Copy !req
70. So take the round brush and just tap in
some basic shapes.
Copy !req
71. Just a very basic shape.
Copy !req
72. You're not really worried about much at
this point.
Copy !req
73. This old round brush does some super
things.
Copy !req
74. There we go.
Copy !req
75. Just all kinds of happy little trees.
Copy !req
76. Little more paint on the brush.
Copy !req
77. And there comes one.
Copy !req
78. All right, maybe right here, let's have a
big strong tree.
Copy !req
79. He lives right here.
Copy !req
80. You can just absolutely go crazy with this.
Copy !req
81. Make all kinds of trees.
Copy !req
82. You gotta have a place for the birds
to sit.
Copy !req
83. There.
Copy !req
84. I introduced you to my little bird earlier
in the series.
Copy !req
85. There.
Copy !req
86. Okay.
Copy !req
87. And that gives us some basic shapes
for all of our little shrubbery and bushes
Copy !req
88. and trees and all those little good things.
Copy !req
89. Now then,
Copy !req
90. I tell you what, let's use the script
liner brush, and I'll dip it right into
Copy !req
91. some paint thinner, and we'll go into some
of the brown.
Copy !req
92. Now you want this paint to be as thin as
water.
Copy !req
93. Ink consistency.
Copy !req
94. And turn the brush.
Copy !req
95. That loads it. Turn it, and pull it
out.
Copy !req
96. See how sharp that is?
Copy !req
97. Turn it, and pull it out.
Copy !req
98. A liner brush has very long bristles.
Copy !req
99. It'll come to a fantastic point.
Copy !req
100. Let's go right up here.
Copy !req
101. Now then.
Copy !req
102. Let's just put the indication of some
happy little tree trunks in here.
Copy !req
103. Just here and there.
Copy !req
104. Gotta have something to hold up all these
trees and shrubbery.
Copy !req
105. There.
Copy !req
106. And maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe there's one
that comes way on out like this.
Copy !req
107. Wherever you make the decision.
Copy !req
108. Here's one over here.
Copy !req
109. This one looks like he's sort of bent to
me.
Copy !req
110. I like old trees that are leaning over and
have some character.
Copy !req
111. And you can put as many or as few branches
as you want in your tree.
Copy !req
112. Just lay them on.
Copy !req
113. Now if you have trouble making the paint
come off the brush, add a little more
Copy !req
114. paint thinner.
Copy !req
115. Remember our golden rule, thin paint
will stick to a thick paint.
Copy !req
116. Okay, and over in here, we don't want this
tree to be left out.
Copy !req
117. Let's give him a happy little trunk.
Copy !req
118. There he is.
Copy !req
119. But you see how easy it is to make a
fantastic sky already?
Copy !req
120. And once you put these little trees
in, then it pushes everything back, and it
Copy !req
121. just, oh, it makes it come alive.
Copy !req
122. Now then, let's take the same old round
brush, I haven't cleaned it, still dirty, and
Copy !req
123. we'll go into some of the yellows, and I'm
just gonna tap into yellow, a little
Copy !req
124. yellow ochre.
Copy !req
125. Just tap it.
Copy !req
126. and get quite a bit of paint on the brush.
Copy !req
127. See how I'm tapping?
Copy !req
128. Do it slow so you can see there, but a lot
of paint.
Copy !req
129. Okay, let's go up here.
Copy !req
130. Now then, with just the top corner of the
brush, let's go in here and begin adding
Copy !req
131. all kinds of little bright, shiny leaves
on here.
Copy !req
132. All I'm doing is just touching, but worry
about shape.
Copy !req
133. Add a little of the bright red to that.
Copy !req
134. Let's make one right, ooh, look at there.
Copy !req
135. Doesn't that one stand out nice?
Copy !req
136. But all you're doing is just tapping with
the top corner, and as you go down, down, down,
Copy !req
137. let it get darker, darker, darker, darker,
darker.
Copy !req
138. Okay, let's go right up here.
Copy !req
139. We'll go to this old big tree, give him
some little happy things going on.
Copy !req
140. Don't want him to be left out.
Copy !req
141. Look at that. Isn't that fantastic?
Copy !req
142. I knew you could do it. I knew.
Copy !req
143. There we go.
Copy !req
144. See, now when you're doing these trees, do
n't kill all the little dark areas.
Copy !req
145. Leave some of these dark areas, see in
here?
Copy !req
146. I'll use that as a pointer.
Copy !req
147. The dark areas are as important as the
light areas.
Copy !req
148. Don't kill them all.
Copy !req
149. That's what gives you tree character.
Copy !req
150. And then we work forward.
Copy !req
151. Work in layers, completing the most
distant thing first, and then coming
Copy !req
152. forward.
Copy !req
153. See, now that one will push everything
else back.
Copy !req
154. Sneaky, huh?
Copy !req
155. And that's the way you build depth in your
painting.
Copy !req
156. And don't make them all the same shape.
Copy !req
157. Some are tall, some are short, some
are skinny, some are fat.
Copy !req
158. They're just like people.
Copy !req
159. Each one has their own individual
personality.
Copy !req
160. There we go.
Copy !req
161. Okay, let's go over here on the other side
and drop in a few on this little tree.
Copy !req
162. We don't want him left out either.
Copy !req
163. And when you're painting trees, devote
some time to studying what a tree looks
Copy !req
164. like.
Copy !req
165. Go out and talk to a tree.
Copy !req
166. Make friends with it.
Copy !req
167. Spend some time looking at trees.
Copy !req
168. See what makes them work.
Copy !req
169. Why do they look the way they look?
Copy !req
170. Bet you got a tree in your front yard
probably that you've looked at for a
Copy !req
171. hundred years and never paid any attention
to.
Copy !req
172. Get you a big glass of iced tea and go out
one day and sit in the yard and just look
Copy !req
173. at how beautiful it is.
Copy !req
174. Nature's so fantastic, you just devote a
little bit of time to studying it, looking
Copy !req
175. at it, make friends with it.
Copy !req
176. There we go, let's go right up in here.
Copy !req
177. We'll put some on this tree.
Copy !req
178. But all we're touching is the top corner
of the brush.
Copy !req
179. Just the very top corner.
Copy !req
180. So you get all those beautiful little
individual things.
Copy !req
181. Be careful that you don't let the brush
slide.
Copy !req
182. If it slides, then you're gonna be unhappy
with me.
Copy !req
183. Don't want you to be unhappy.
Copy !req
184. You're just tapping, but no sliding.
Copy !req
185. That's very important.
Copy !req
186. Now then, let's come right down here and
there's another little rascal.
Copy !req
187. He's just singing in the sun out here.
Copy !req
188. You can just cover up your whole canvas
with layer after layer of bushes if you
Copy !req
189. want.
Copy !req
190. And that's okay, that's a super, super way
to practice.
Copy !req
191. But let's have some fun in here.
Copy !req
192. Maybe, maybe we will take just some plain
old titanium white here on the fan brush, load
Copy !req
193. it quite full.
Copy !req
194. Okay, let's go right up in here.
Copy !req
195. Now then, maybe there's snow on the ground
here.
Copy !req
196. In with all these little bushes.
Copy !req
197. I want to do that because it looks pretty.
Copy !req
198. Just begin forming the lay of the land, see?
Copy !req
199. Very gently.
Copy !req
200. And allow it to pick up that color that's
underneath, so it reflects right out of
Copy !req
201. the sky.
Copy !req
202. And you can just make all kinds of little
hills and valleys in here.
Copy !req
203. And very lightly, just blend it all
together.
Copy !req
204. And you can push everything back.
Copy !req
205. You can make layer after layer after layer,
just by blending it a little.
Copy !req
206. There we go.
Copy !req
207. Maybe over in here.
Copy !req
208. Comes right down, just wherever you
want it.
Copy !req
209. It's up to you.
Copy !req
210. There we go.
Copy !req
211. Isn't that a super easy way to make some
happy little ground areas?
Copy !req
212. Okay, maybe over in here.
Copy !req
213. We'll just bring this right on back, what
the heck.
Copy !req
214. We don't have to make any big decisions
yet.
Copy !req
215. Something like so.
Copy !req
216. I tell you what, if you've painted with me
before, you know me and water.
Copy !req
217. I'm a water fanatic.
Copy !req
218. So I take a little bit of white on the two
inch brush.
Copy !req
219. And let's say there's a little bit of
water right here.
Copy !req
220. So I'm gonna touch and just pull straight
down.
Copy !req
221. Straight down.
Copy !req
222. Here I'm using a very, very firm pressure.
Copy !req
223. Get tough with it. Just pull him down.
Copy !req
224. Like so.
Copy !req
225. Okay. Okay, white.
Copy !req
226. See how easy it is to make water?
Copy !req
227. Be sure these lines come straight down.
Copy !req
228. There, add a little bit of color.
Copy !req
229. I want this to be bright.
Copy !req
230. Alright, now then, gently, gently go
across.
Copy !req
231. Just enough to give it sort of a sheen.
Copy !req
232. Like so.
Copy !req
233. Okay.
Copy !req
234. Now then, let's come back with the old fan
brush, and we can begin doing little
Copy !req
235. individual things here.
Copy !req
236. Watch right here.
Copy !req
237. Just that easy, just bring it right over, put
a little doer right there.
Copy !req
238. And maybe there's one that lives here, and
this one comes right on out.
Copy !req
239. Just like so.
Copy !req
240. See, just as many or as few as you want.
Copy !req
241. And we can begin putting all kinds of
little things that live out here.
Copy !req
242. Okay, there we go.
Copy !req
243. Tell you what, let's go over here.
Copy !req
244. And you build layer after layer after
layer.
Copy !req
245. And that, once again, I know you get tired
of hearing me say it, but that helps
Copy !req
246. create the illusion of depth, distance
in your painting.
Copy !req
247. There we are.
Copy !req
248. Now then, I'm gonna take a,
Copy !req
249. a little touch of the liquid white.
Copy !req
250. Pull it out very flat.
Copy !req
251. Let me clean the knife.
Copy !req
252. Maybe we can get a close up here and you
can see how to load this knife.
Copy !req
253. Pull it out as flat as you can get it
and then cut across.
Copy !req
254. See? Pull it out flat and then cut across.
Copy !req
255. It's that easy. Okay, let's go right up
here.
Copy !req
256. Now, all you do is go right in here and we'll
just cut in a little water line.
Copy !req
257. Just cut it in.
Copy !req
258. Like so.
Copy !req
259. And maybe a little bit right in there.
Copy !req
260. Isn't that super?
Copy !req
261. Now then, I have to make some big
decisions.
Copy !req
262. Tell you what let's do, let's have this
come right down
Copy !req
263. Over there.
Copy !req
264. And we can just fill all this up.
Copy !req
265. Add a touch of the phthalo blue right
there.
Copy !req
266. I'm gonna put some shadows in this.
Copy !req
267. Just a little tiny bit.
Copy !req
268. Then we put the white right over it.
Copy !req
269. Like so.
Copy !req
270. Maybe we'll even add a little touch
of alizarin crimson.
Copy !req
271. I want some of that sky color to reflect
through there.
Copy !req
272. All we're doing right now is just laying
in some base color.
Copy !req
273. Now we'll come back and very gently, very
gently, begin laying white right on top of
Copy !req
274. that.
Copy !req
275. This is just straight titanium white.
Copy !req
276. Just plain old white.
Copy !req
277. Alright. There we go.
Copy !req
278. Isn't that a super way just to drop in a
happy little snowbank?
Copy !req
279. And you can do it.
Copy !req
280. You can do it.
Copy !req
281. Okay, right here.
Copy !req
282. Did you ever think you'd get a painting
this bright off a black canvas?
Copy !req
283. You can.
Copy !req
284. You really can. There we go.
Copy !req
285. Straighten up the edges.
Copy !req
286. All right. Let's smooth this out up here a
little.
Copy !req
287. Put a little bit of the phthalo blue up
here too.
Copy !req
288. I want to create a little shadow in there.
Copy !req
289. It's a little bit darker over in here.
Copy !req
290. Then our white.
Copy !req
291. See there, you can just keep changing your
mind anytime that you want to here.
Copy !req
292. We don't make mistakes.
Copy !req
293. We have happy accidents.
Copy !req
294. You learn to work with anything that
happens.
Copy !req
295. There we go.
Copy !req
296. That's coming right along.
Copy !req
297. Tell you what, tell you what, let's
have some fun.
Copy !req
298. This little round brush is so much fun, let's
just play with it.
Copy !req
299. I'll go right into the browns again, just
tap.
Copy !req
300. Just tap it, maybe over here in this
corner.
Copy !req
301. Yep, I see a great big tree.
Copy !req
302. Boy, he's a big one. He goes clean off the
canvas up here.
Copy !req
303. There you are.
Copy !req
304. Just sort of visualize these things
in your mind and drop them on the canvas.
Copy !req
305. It's your creation.
Copy !req
306. You can do anything that you want to do
here.
Copy !req
307. Anything, we'll just come right on down
here.
Copy !req
308. Like so.
Copy !req
309. Now then, we'll take the fan brush and
load it full of the Van Dyke brown and
Copy !req
310. dark sienna.
Copy !req
311. We just mix them together, right on the
brush.
Copy !req
312. See, load the brush full of color.
Copy !req
313. Both sides. Okay, let's go right up here.
Copy !req
314. Now then, let's put a happy little tree
trunk in there.
Copy !req
315. Just ooh.
Copy !req
316. As you pull down, apply more pressure
so it gets larger and larger, larger and
Copy !req
317. larger toward the bottom.
Copy !req
318. Tell you what, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe
right, yep, right there.
Copy !req
319. Right there, we'll put another one.
Copy !req
320. Shoot, we just got all kinds of happy
little trees.
Copy !req
321. And take the knife, some white, and some
of that same brown color.
Copy !req
322. I'm gonna add at least a little touch
of the bright red to it, just to give it
Copy !req
323. some, mmm, sparkle it up.
Copy !req
324. About like that.
Copy !req
325. Cut off a little roll of paint, just a
very small roll.
Copy !req
326. Let's go up here.
Copy !req
327. Now then, right along the edges here, I
just wanna put the indication of a few
Copy !req
328. highlights.
Copy !req
329. Just make that little tree stand right out.
Copy !req
330. Then we'll give this one some, don't want
him left out.
Copy !req
331. There he is, there he is.
Copy !req
332. That easy.
Copy !req
333. And all I'm doing is just touching the
canvas.
Copy !req
334. The canvas will pull off what it wants and
give you back what's left.
Copy !req
335. Just like a tax man does every year.
Copy !req
336. There we go.
Copy !req
337. Just right on up the tree.
Copy !req
338. Okay.
Copy !req
339. And let's take our old liner brush, paint
thinner, and you want this paint to be
Copy !req
340. very, very thin.
Copy !req
341. I can't say that enough.
Copy !req
342. It won't flow unless it's almost the
consistency of ink.
Copy !req
343. All right, let's just go right in here and
just drop in the indication of a few happy
Copy !req
344. little tree branches here and there.
Copy !req
345. Just here and there.
Copy !req
346. Wherever you think they should be, that's
exactly where they should be.
Copy !req
347. And when you do this, just relax, kick
back, enjoy.
Copy !req
348. Should make you happy.
Copy !req
349. Should make you very happy when you
paint.
Copy !req
350. Painting's one of those good things.
Copy !req
351. There.
Copy !req
352. And if painting teaches you nothing
else, nothing else at all, it will teach
Copy !req
353. you to see.
Copy !req
354. It will teach you to see things in nature
that you never knew existed before.
Copy !req
355. You'll become aware of shape, of color.
Copy !req
356. Oh my gosh, it opens a whole new world
to you.
Copy !req
357. A whole new world.
Copy !req
358. And when you drive down the street, you'll
see color and trees and form.
Copy !req
359. Be careful, you'll wreck the car sometime
looking.
Copy !req
360. I get so crazy, I just don't pay any
attention to where I'm going.
Copy !req
361. And when I travel, I carry a camera
with me.
Copy !req
362. And with a camera, then you can take
pictures of things and save it for later
Copy !req
363. times when you want to paint, and you
can come back and take ideas off that
Copy !req
364. painting that you did, or picture that
you did, and do a beautiful painting.
Copy !req
365. I'm just taking a little bit of the brown
here, and tapping in some, just some
Copy !req
366. little indications of some happy little
leaves.
Copy !req
367. This is just the dark, so if we put some
light on, it'll show.
Copy !req
368. Just some dark color.
Copy !req
369. Okay, I have two round brushes going here,
so I don't have to go back and forth and
Copy !req
370. wash them so much.
Copy !req
371. Okay, now we'll go back in here, and we
just, just with a little bit of yellow, tap
Copy !req
372. on some indications of some happy little
leaves that are living up here.
Copy !req
373. This round brush is fantastic, you can do
entire paintings with it.
Copy !req
374. You can do entire paintings, makes
beautiful clouds, super bushes.
Copy !req
375. Don't overdo here. Wanna keep this quite
dark.
Copy !req
376. This is more in the shadow areas.
Copy !req
377. Like so. Okay.
Copy !req
378. Now then, with our fan brush that has the
white on it, we can go back in here and
Copy !req
379. let's just clean up the foots down here.
Copy !req
380. And allow a little of that brown color to
be picked up.
Copy !req
381. Now, let's have some fun.
Copy !req
382. We'll take the fan brush with some brown
on it, and we'll just pop in a few little
Copy !req
383. grassy things that are living down here.
Copy !req
384. Wherever you want them.
Copy !req
385. Maybe there's one that lives here.
Copy !req
386. Look at there.
Copy !req
387. Just wherever.
Copy !req
388. Sort of breaks up that expanse of white.
Copy !req
389. Then with our brush that has the white
on it, we can smooth up the edges and sort
Copy !req
390. of bring this all together.
Copy !req
391. There.
Copy !req
392. Wherever you want it to go.
Copy !req
393. I tell you what, you know me.
Copy !req
394. I got a couple minutes left here, so let's
have some fun.
Copy !req
395. I think, yep, I think it's a big tree.
Copy !req
396. He comes way out here and lives down here.
Copy !req
397. By putting this tree in, does two things.
Copy !req
398. It drives my director crazy, that's first.
Copy !req
399. But the second thing is it pushes
everything back and gives much more
Copy !req
400. perspective to the painting.
Copy !req
401. There we go.
Copy !req
402. Alright, back to our paint thinner on the
liner brush.
Copy !req
403. And let's put in just an indication
of a little tree trunk or two here.
Copy !req
404. Just here and there, like so.
Copy !req
405. There's some.
Copy !req
406. Once again, this paint should be as thin
as ink.
Copy !req
407. Thin as ink.
Copy !req
408. If it won't flow, then add a little bit
more of the paint thinner to it.
Copy !req
409. There.
Copy !req
410. With our knife, this little tree needs to
touch a highlight on it.
Copy !req
411. Just a little, just enough to make him
stand out.
Copy !req
412. Just by tapping, you can fade it right on
back into nothing.
Copy !req
413. While I have that thin paint on here, I'm
gonna just drop in a few little sticks
Copy !req
414. and twigs here and there.
Copy !req
415. Just a couple to break that up and bring
it all together.
Copy !req
416. Okay.
Copy !req
417. Let's put the indication of a happy little
leaf or two on this tree.
Copy !req
418. Don't want him to be left out.
Copy !req
419. About like so.
Copy !req
420. Just a couple. A little bit of yellow.
Copy !req
421. And we can highlight him.
Copy !req
422. What a fantastic way though to make a
super little painting.
Copy !req
423. I really hope you've enjoyed this one.
Copy !req
424. It'll give you a lot of experience with a
round brush.
Copy !req
425. A lot of fun.
Copy !req
426. And I certainly, certainly hope you
try it.
Copy !req
427. I think we'll assign that one.
Copy !req
428. Take a little bit of red,
Copy !req
429. Sign it right here.
Copy !req
430. And with that, we'll call this painting
finished.
Copy !req
431. Once again, certainly hope you've enjoyed
it.
Copy !req
432. I look forward to seeing you next time.
Copy !req
433. Until then, happy painting.
Copy !req
434. God bless.
