The Joy of Painting 10x5

1. Hi, welcome back. Certainly glad you could join me today.

2. Let's start out and have them graphically run all the colors across the screen that

3. you need to do this painting with me.

4. And as usual, they'll come across in exactly the same order as I have them

5. laid out on the palette, starting with the white and working around.

6. Today we have something a little different, a little unusual up here.

7. I've taken an 18 by 24 inch canvas, and I have it vertical, that's up and down.

8. And the bottom half here, probably, oh, it's below half, I've covered with black

9. gesso.

10. And the top half then is just left white.

11. Now, I've covered the whole top half with liquid white.

12. It's nice and wet and ready to go as usual.

13. The bottom half, I've started up here with a alizarin crimson and phthalo blue

14. mixture, it makes a lavender, graduated into a mixture of prussian blue and a

15. little bit of yellow ochre to give it sort of a greenish hue, and then graduated

16. on into phthalo blue and phthalo green.

17. So we have a lavender, a dark green, and then a brighter green.

18. And this is gonna be a happy little seascape.

19. So let's take off here and have some fun.

20. I think you'll enjoy this one.

21. We'll start off today with phthalo blue, reach over here and grab some midnight black and

22. mix them together.

23. So I have blue and black, blue and black, black and blue, whichever way.

24. There we go, that's the way I always look when I get home late, black and blue.

25. Alright, let's go right up in here and let's just drop in some happy little

26. Just using little criss-cross strokes.

27. I'm gonna have some big clouds today.

28. Think we'll do some fantastic big clouds.

29. So I'm gonna make the sky maybe a little bit darker than I usually do, just so the

30. clouds will stand out.

31. Just drop in some basic shapes.

32. I'm leaving some areas open here.

33. And in those open areas, we'll come back and we'll put all the little clouds

34. in and let them dance around and have fun.

35. And maybe it comes right on down like that, doesn't matter.

36. And if you get down here into this color, that's okay too.

37. No big deal, we don't make mistakes.

38. We have happy accidents.

39. Okay, there.

40. I know, you're sitting at home saying, boy, that sure is a weird looking cloud

41. Bob's making today.

42. Let me see if we can straighten him out.

43. Okay, let me wash my old brush.

44. Wash your brush with just odorless paint thinner.

45. Shake it off.

46. Just beat the devil out of it.

47. Now then, with a clean, dry brush, go back and then we'll soften this.

48. And it's alright if you pull a little bit of this color into the light area.

49. There we go.

50. Just soften it and bring it together.

51. Just bring it together.

52. Our basic little cloud shape is still there.

53. There we go, take out the brush strokes.

54. Same old dirty brush, don't even have to clean it this time.

55. I'm gonna go right into some bright red, take it and go into midnight black.

56. So I have bright red and midnight black.

57. And just tap the brush into the color, just tap it.

58. Okay, let's go back up here.

59. Now then we have to make some decisions.

60. Where does our shadows live in here?

61. I'm gonna have a shadow right here.

62. Right against the water.

63. And we'll just let that work right on up.

64. Like so.

65. Just a happy little shadow that lives in there.

66. Big clouds today.

67. So we put the shadows in first and then we'll come back and we'll put some

68. highlights on them.

69. Just sort of look around here and make a big decision.

70. Where do you think the shadows will live in this cloud?

71. wherever.

72. And it's not a big deal because if you put a shadow here you don't like, then we'll

73. just cover it up.

74. We can fix anything.

75. Wash the brush.

76. Shake him off. This is the fun part.

77. That's crazy.

78. Now then, I'll get carried away with this brush cleaning.

79. Now then, let's take a little bright red and go right into the titanium white.

80. Just the littlest amount of bright red.

81. See, pull that brush through there.

82. Load a lot of paint into it.

83. Okay, let's go up here.

84. Now then, let's go up to the top and just begin making all those fluffy little

85. things on top of the cloud.

86. Let that brush just dance around there and play in tiny little circles.

87. Tiny little circles.

88. We're making all those little fluffies that live in the clouds.

89. Bring it right on down into the dark here.

90. Right on down.

91. Now if you just pick up too much of the dark color, just stop and wash your brush.

92. Nothing wrong with washing your brush.

93. There we go.

94. Now then let's put some light area right in there.

95. Right in there.

96. See there?

97. Told you that would be easy.

98. There comes a nice little fluffer.

99. Clouds are free.

100. They just float around the sky all day and have fun.

101. They're one of the freest things in nature.

102. There we are.

103. Told you we was gonna make a big cloud today.

104. This is gonna be a big cloud.

105. Here he comes right on down.

106. Going about ate up a whole canvas with clouds.

107. That's all right.

108. If you learn how to make a cloud, then it's worth all the effort.

109. Learn.

110. Every time you practice, you learn more.

111. Every painting you do, you learn a little bit more, and you know in your heart that

112. the next one's gonna be even better.

113. Each one gets better.

114. Now let's take a two inch brush and use just the top corner, and we're just gonna

115. mix up the bottom of this cloud.

116. Just gently, gently, using tiny little circles, mix it right into that darker

117. color.

118. Don't touch the top of the cloud yet.

119. We want them to stay strong and bright, shiny right now.

120. If you begin picking up paint, just beat the brush and that'll remove the excess

121. paint.

122. See, just blend all that together.

123. Son of a gun of a cloud.

124. It's a big one, big old cloud, happy cloud.

125. And as I say, that just removes some of the excess paint.

126. You don't have to go through the whole cleaning procedure.

127. Now, we're gonna fluff this cloud.

128. Grab it and pull it.

129. Circles though, big circular strokes.

130. If you pull straight up, it's gonna look like it's raining up.

131. And that'll bother you if it's raining up.

132. So try not to have it raining up.

133. Pull it in big circles.

134. Big, big circles.

135. Like so.

136. Just grab it and lift it upward.

137. Lift it upward.

138. I'm continually beating the paint out of this brush so the brush remains dry and

139. relatively free of color.

140. I want just a clean, dry brush.

141. Now if you get too much, once again, stop and wash your brush.

142. There's not a thing in the world wrong with washing your brush.

143. Just make this as soft as you want it.

144. Like so.

145. Very lightly, very, very lightly.

146. Three hairs and some air.

147. And that quick, boy, you got one heck of a sky.

148. Now then, if you wanted to add little details in it, you could come back in here,

149. see, and you could still go back and put little floaters that float around in there

150. and still change the shape.

151. Anything you wanna do, you can do here.

152. Blend it.

153. See?

154. Give it a little fluff and then that cloud lays right out there, right out there in

155. front of the rest of them.

156. He went to the front of the class.

157. Okay.

158. Alright, now we can wash our brush.

159. We got a little sky. That easy.

160. That easy.

161. Shake him off.

162. Now go ahead and clean this one inch brush at the same time.

163. Okay, we're gonna do a happy little seascape today.

164. So maybe one of the easiest ways that I have found to do a little seascape

165. is take, this is a number six filbert brush.

166. I'm gonna put a little white on it.

167. And I'm just gonna go up here.

168. The thing that we're most concerned about is the one big major wave.

169. I have so many letters saying I wanna do the big crashing wave with a transparent

170. eye.

171. Okay, let's go right here.

172. Now, decide where that big transparency's gonna be.

173. Maybe it comes right down like this, and the water comes wherever you want it, and

174. then down, something like so.

175. This is just to give you an idea, sort of a guide.

176. You're really not committed, that's all you need, right about there.

177. That sort of gives us something to

178. to work by.

179. Okay, let's take a fan brush.

180. I'm gonna start with just plain old titanium white.

181. Let's go right back here in the background.

182. This is just plain white.

183. Now, remember this color already on the canvas, and it's wet.

184. Don't let that color dry.

185. Now we can go right back in here.

186. Look at that.

187. See here? Just make little strokes like that.

188. And it mixes with the color that's on the canvas and all these beautiful little

189. effects will happen automatically.

190. Automatically. I like to do seascapes on black canvas.

191. Because all your dark is already in there for you.

192. Watch here, here's something that's fun.

193. We'll just take white.

194. Maybe, let's go right in here.

195. We'll do this.

196. Like, look at that, see?

197. And I know you're saying, oh Bob, you're done at this time.

198. You may be right.

199. Let's do it again then. What the heck.

200. There. Right on out like that.

201. The only thing we're worried about is in this part right here.

202. We don't care about that right there.

203. We don't worry about that part.

204. We're just worried about the black.

205. Now watch.

206. Let me wipe this brush off and get all the excess paint off of it.

207. See which way this is going, that'll give you a guide.

208. Now, very lightly, very lightly, just blend that color back.

209. This gives you the little trough, as it's called.

210. Trough, right in between these, see there?

211. All of a sudden, it'll start making sense now.

212. There we go, that easy.

213. That easy, you can make just all kinds of little wave things happening.

214. Let me clean the brush.

215. I'm just drying it on a paper towel.

216. Go back into my white.

217. Now then, let's make some big decisions.

218. Here this comes, zoop.

219. And then it comes like that.

220. And we'll do exactly the same thing again.

221. Just very gently, very gently bring that back.

222. Very lightly.

223. Just barely caressing the canvas.

224. If you get too much paint, just wipe off the excess.

225. See there?

226. All right, all right.

227. I knew you could do that.

228. This is one of the nice, easiest ways I have ever found of making a happy little

229. seascape.

230. There we go.

231. Okay.

232. Now then, let's take and worry about this nice transparency here.

233. So for that, I'm gonna take white, white,

234. Titanium white and the least little touch, least little touch of the cadmium yellow.

235. Just load this filbert brush full of paint, a lot of paint, okay?

236. Now then, decide where your little transparency or the light part's gonna be

237. and begin laying it in.

238. Scrub it in, get tough with it.

239. Right along the top.

240. And then gently, gently, gently just blends right on out to nothing.

241. Then we need to, you can do this as many times as you want to achieve the desired

242. effect or desired lightness.

243. Clean your brush each time and reload it with paint, because you want this to be a

244. bright area right in here.

245. And you can add more paint to it.

246. And if you begin getting a buildup of paint, if it begins getting too thick, I'll

247. show you, I'll show you.

248. Take your knife and just scratch it off.

249. See that value remains on that.

250. You can wash it.

251. Go back, see, and each time it's gonna get a little brighter, a little shinier.

252. You can do this as many times as you desire.

253. And here you begin worrying about the shape of this major wave.

254. There we go.

255. Just like so. And I can wash the brush.

256. Get it good and dry.

257. Now then, with a clean, dry two inch brush, very lightly, very lightly, I'm gonna

258. begin blending this little transparency here.

259. And here I'm gonna grab it and begin working on the basic shape of the wave.

260. As it goes out, it's gonna get flatter and flatter.

261. See there how easy that is?

262. Doesn't have to be hard.

263. There we go.

264. And that gives us some of our initial shapes.

265. Okay, I'll clean that old brush.

266. Beating dry. Let me find another fan brush here.

267. Okay.

268. Go right into titanium white.

269. Right into it.

270. There's a little blue in that color too, so it's not pure white.

271. A little tiny bit of blue that was left over.

272. Let's go up here.

273. Now then, this wave's gonna be crashing over.

274. This comes over here and goes.

275. Gotta make those little noises or it won't work.

276. Okay, reload it.

277. Reload it, touch.

278. Touch.

279. See there, how easy that is?

280. If you pick up too much of the under color, you may have to wash your brush several

281. times.

282. But that's all right, that's all right.

283. I'll wash this brush.

284. Now then, we go back and get our little filbert brush.

285. Take some white, let's use some alizarin crimson and a little bit of the phthalo

286. blue.

287. More crimson and more blue. I want it a little darker.

288. Ooh, and we're getting there.

289. There we go, that's what I'm looking for.

290. Dark lavender looking color.

291. Load the bristles full of paint.

292. Just really rub it in there.

293. Okay, let's go up here.

294. Now, maybe there's some nice foam splashing on here.

295. We're putting in the shadow for the foam.

296. Just scrub it in.

297. Scrub it in.

298. Scrub it in.

299. Hard.

300. But work on your basic shape here now.

301. Maybe it splashes way up like that.

302. Comes right around.

303. This is the shadow.

304. This is the shadow.

305. This is where you put the dark part of your foam in.

306. Clean your brush.

307. You'll be an expert brush washer by the time this is over.

308. Be sure the brush is dry though.

309. That's most, most important.

310. Okay.

311. Now then I'm gonna go back into white.

312. with the absolute least little touch of the cadmium yellow.

313. Probably can't hardly even see any in there, but there's a little touch in there.

314. Least little touch.

315. Okay, let's put some highlight on this foam now.

316. Sort of hold the brush to the side here, and give it a little upward push, so that when

317. it hits at the top, then it makes all those little splashies.

318. And as one side gets wore out, all the colors used, turn it over.

319. It's got two sides on it.

320. Wipe off the excess, and you go back in there and get you a little more.

321. There we go.

322. Just place that in there.

323. Wipe it between, at least wipe it between each application so you get that dark

324. color off.

325. When it starts getting dirty, give it a good wash.

326. There we go.

327. Pick up a little more white, little touch of yellow in it.

328. There we go.

329. Now let's go right in here.

330. Gotta make those little noises.

331. There we go, we'll just let it come right up here and break the horizon.

332. All kinds of happy little splashes, see?

333. There we go.

334. Little splash right there.

335. Isn't that a super little way, though, to make a happy seascape?

336. Now, find out if you have a really delicate touch.

337. Just the corner of the brush, just the corner,

338. and just gently, gently, just sort of wind it up.

339. Just little tiny, tiniest little circles, barely touching.

340. The brush is hardly moving.

341. Just sort of blend it all together.

342. See how soft and, look at that water churning.

343. There.

344. You don't, as they say, you don't have to be crazy to do this, but it does help.

345. Now then.

346. That's fine, there we go.

347. Let's really get wild today.

348. I'm gonna go right back in to the white.

349. Right back in.

350. Maybe right along in here, maybe there's another little doer that comes right out.

351. Like that.

352. And then we'll blend this one back, and this begins making the shape of the large

353. wave here.

354. See there?

355. Picking up that color that's underneath, all the beautiful colors we had here.

356. We're beginning to hit the phthalo green and phthalo blue mixture.

357. Just begin coming together.

358. This is where you create the shape of that wave.

359. So angles are very important.

360. Pay attention to them here.

361. Very, very important.

362. Of course, now, any big, nice seascape needs a stone for the waves to be crashing

363. against.

364. We got us a splash, so let's put a stone right here.

365. I want to break the horizon with that so it comes right on up.

366. Maybe this is a big, tall stone.

367. Put a bump out here and wherever.

368. This is just straight Van Dyke brown.

369. All you need is just the basic little rocks.

370. Now here, whatever you think your rock should look like, that's what it oughta

371. look like.

372. There we go.

373. Now then, I'm gonna take the fan brush.

374. and we'll take some paint thinner on the fan brush and go right in to straight

375. bright red, but it's very thin, very thin.

376. This is bright red that's thinned with paint thinner, very thin, okay?

377. Now then, let's just take this and go right over the edge of the rock.

378. You can do this with a liner brush and really put a lot of detail into it.

379. I just don't have time here to set into it one stroke at a time, but at home, if you

380. want to really shape these rocks, take a liner brush,

381. And you can just make all kinds of beautiful little effects.

382. Maybe there's another little, see there?

383. See there?

384. All kinds of happy little things.

385. And just sort of blend them out.

386. Just go on and on, maybe there's a, see there?

387. Just as many as you want.

388. Or as few.

389. Now we can take our brush that has the white on it and just begin putting some

390. little splashers down here at the bottom.

391. Lift it up, lift it up.

392. Now we can begin working on all kinds of happy little things.

393. Tell you what I see.

394. Let me get the small knife.

395. I see, right in here, another happy little stone.

396. It lives right there.

397. Right there.

398. And he's got a friend.

399. Well, tell you what, I got another idea.

400. Got another idea.

401. When you're painting these, you just look up here and you see all kind of things

402. happening.

403. Let's put a little highlight on here.

404. This is just a natural.

405. This is a natural.

406. Let me grab a little white.

407. Maybe there's another little wave coming here and it's splashing up against the

408. bottom of this and there's just foam churning and carrying on.

409. See there?

410. That easy.

411. Working layers.

412. Now maybe there's another happy stone right there.

413. He's a little smaller.

414. And we'll just use a knife.

415. We can put a little touch of highlight right there on him.

416. Go back.

417. Put in some foam around his foots.

418. Rock needs some foam if it's churning over.

419. Now I have sort of blue and white on here.

420. We can begin creating all kinds of little foam patterns in here.

421. Just like so. Follow the angles in your wave.

422. It's most, most important.

423. Maybe here's one spilling over, coming down.

424. Leave some little holes in there.

425. Just like so.

426. All kinds of little things.

427. Sometimes you can, I like to use a fan brush, because you can just do,

428. Like so. See how you can make that look all like water.

429. All kinds of little things going on.

430. And you can really get carried away and spend a lot of time making beautiful, beautiful

431. effects.

432. Now then, let's take

433. I'm gonna take a touch of paint thinner right into the brightest color, that

434. yellow and white, and I wanna highlight just these little edges here.

435. Make it come right on down, see there?

436. There we go.

437. And back in here where the light's striking, put all kinds of little details

438. back here.

439. This is what really, really makes your seascape stand out.

440. All these little doers.

441. See, let them wander back up through here.

442. And you can just take and put hundreds of these in.

443. Just hundreds of them, just wherever you think they ought to go.

444. See, some in here.

445. This is where you create the shape of the wave.

446. Use a lot of paint thinner so the paint is very thin.

447. Think where light would strike in here.

448. See all the little details you can just drop in?

449. That easy, that easy.

450. You can do it.

451. Did you ever think you could make such a seascape so easy?

452. I like these black and white canvases.

453. They open whole new worlds to you.

454. You can do all kinds of beautiful little effects.

455. There we go.

456. All kinds of little things that are happening in the water.

457. See there?

458. And you can take the blue and white with a liner brush and put all kinds of little

459. watery things dribbling down the side here.

460. I think that'll give you a good idea of how to do a fantastic little seascape

461. quite fast.

462. So I'll take a little of the bright red and we'll sign this one right here.

463. It's a good thing I have a short name.

464. Doesn't take but just a second.
