1. Glad to see you again today.
Copy !req
2. You ready to do a fantastic seascape?
Copy !req
3. Thought that's what we'd do today.
Copy !req
4. So let's start out and have them run all
the colors across the screen that you
Copy !req
5. need to do the seascape with me.
Copy !req
6. And let's go on up here and let me talk
just a little bit while they're doing that.
Copy !req
7. I started with a good old standard 18 by
24 inch canvas, but I've done something
Copy !req
8. a little bit different today.
Copy !req
9. The top part of the canvas is totally
covered with a thin even coat of liquid
Copy !req
10. white all the way up here down.
Copy !req
11. You can see this little line here.
Copy !req
12. Now from here down,
Copy !req
13. is covered with liquid clear.
Copy !req
14. Now this is just like liquid white, only
it's clear, that's all.
Copy !req
15. So let's go and do a fantastic little
seascape.
Copy !req
16. I'm gonna start out with a two inch brush
and a small, small amount of the cad
Copy !req
17. yellow.
Copy !req
18. Very small amount.
Copy !req
19. Just beat it into the bristles a little
bit.
Copy !req
20. Okay, let's go up here.
Copy !req
21. Now then, maybe we'll have a beautiful, bright
little sky today.
Copy !req
22. So I'm just gonna start with a little
yellow.
Copy !req
23. Do something like so.
Copy !req
24. Just let that mix with the liquid white.
Copy !req
25. There.
Copy !req
26. Now without cleaning the brush, go right
into a touch of yellow ochre.
Copy !req
27. Load the brush the same way.
Copy !req
28. Go back up here. Now right around the
edges of that.
Copy !req
29. See there? Still using little criss-cross
strokes.
Copy !req
30. We'll just bring that right around sort of
like so.
Copy !req
31. There we go.
Copy !req
32. And if a little happens to get down here
in your painting, don't worry about it.
Copy !req
33. Don't worry about it.
Copy !req
34. It's no problem at all.
Copy !req
35. Okay, still without cleaning the brush, we'll
go right into bright red, a little bit.
Copy !req
36. It's very strong, okay?
Copy !req
37. Now then, right around those edges, we'll
take a little bit of this beautiful
Copy !req
38. red color.
Copy !req
39. Just like so. Isn't that pretty?
Copy !req
40. Already we have a painting for the Museum
of Modern Art here.
Copy !req
41. We can just stop right there.
Copy !req
42. Now then, I want to put a little bit
of red over here and just let it work
Copy !req
43. right along.
Copy !req
44. Right in here is gonna be the horizon.
Copy !req
45. There we go.
Copy !req
46. And we'll just very lightly blend all this
together.
Copy !req
47. Okay.
Copy !req
48. Now then, I have several brushes going, so
I don't have to spend all my time washing.
Copy !req
49. I'm gonna take straight titanium white, just
straight white, and go right up in this
Copy !req
50. area, and I want this to be very bright, so
I'm gonna take white and put it right
Copy !req
51. there.
Copy !req
52. Straight titanium white.
Copy !req
53. Now it won't show up much because light
against light is nothing, but you just
Copy !req
54. wait.
Copy !req
55. Now I'm gonna grab it and pull it.
Copy !req
56. Just pull.
Copy !req
57. Cover all that up anyway.
Copy !req
58. Now then, let me wash the brush.
Copy !req
59. And we just wash our brushes with odorless
paint thinner.
Copy !req
60. Shake them off.
Copy !req
61. And beat the devil out of them.
Copy !req
62. Okay.
Copy !req
63. Or we can just use this same old brush.
Copy !req
64. I'm gonna go into a small amount of
phthalo blue and reach up here and grab a
Copy !req
65. little touch of alizarin crimson.
Copy !req
66. So we have phthalo blue and alizarin
crimson.
Copy !req
67. Proportionately, much more crimson than
blue.
Copy !req
68. I want this to be a little bit to the
reddish side.
Copy !req
69. Okay, there's very little paint on the
brush.
Copy !req
70. Let's go back up here.
Copy !req
71. Now then, let's take and use just the
corner of the brush, using little circular,
Copy !req
72. little circular strokes, and let's
just begin laying in some happy little
Copy !req
73. clouds.
Copy !req
74. Maybe there's one that lives, oh look at
there, look at there, look at there.
Copy !req
75. There he is, see?
Copy !req
76. He comes right out there.
Copy !req
77. See how easy it is to make all kinds
of beautiful little cloud shapes?
Copy !req
78. All you need is just the corner of the
brush.
Copy !req
79. There we go.
Copy !req
80. Okay, now then over here, we'll put
another little cloud that lives right
Copy !req
81. there.
Copy !req
82. There we go.
Copy !req
83. And in your world, you decide where the
clouds live.
Copy !req
84. And you put as many or as few as you
want.
Copy !req
85. It's your decision.
Copy !req
86. There we go.
Copy !req
87. Just wherever, maybe there's one right
there.
Copy !req
88. Still using those tiny little strokes, little
circular strokes, just with the corner of
Copy !req
89. the brush.
Copy !req
90. Okay, as I say, I have several brushes
going here.
Copy !req
91. Now with a clean brush, I'm just gonna
very gently blend this a little.
Copy !req
92. Don't have to over blend it.
Copy !req
93. Just enough to sort of mix it up.
Copy !req
94. Like so.
Copy !req
95. There we go.
Copy !req
96. Still using little round strokes, little
circular strokes.
Copy !req
97. Now you can blend this till it absolutely
goes away.
Copy !req
98. All we want to do is blend it just enough
to soften the edges so it comes all, and
Copy !req
99. then watch here.
Copy !req
100. Then we'll take this and very gently, three
hairs and some air,
Copy !req
101. Very gently, just bring it all together.
Copy !req
102. You don't want to lose your shapes.
Copy !req
103. You just want to soften all the edges.
Copy !req
104. And then you can do like that.
Copy !req
105. See how it just brings it right over?
Copy !req
106. Makes it look like little light streaks
coming through there.
Copy !req
107. Now then, to really add a little more
contrast, I'm gonna mix a little more
Copy !req
108. color, the same color, crimson and phthalo
blue.
Copy !req
109. Those are in crimson, phthalo blue.
Copy !req
110. But a little darker, a little more on the
brush.
Copy !req
111. And right in here, I wanna show a cloud
that's a little closer.
Copy !req
112. So for that, we'll just use a little
darker color.
Copy !req
113. And it'll give the impression that this
cloud is closer to us.
Copy !req
114. See how easy that is?
Copy !req
115. You can create all kinds of beautiful
little things happening in here.
Copy !req
116. Alright, then we'll go back to our clean
brush, stir this up a little bit, just mix
Copy !req
117. it.
Copy !req
118. Don't overdo, don't overdo.
Copy !req
119. It's easy to get carried away.
Copy !req
120. And then very lightly, two hairs and some
air this time.
Copy !req
121. It gives the impression now that that
cloud is in front a little bit.
Copy !req
122. So it helps create the illusion of depth
and distance in your sky.
Copy !req
123. And you can put a couple here and there, wherever.
Copy !req
124. But that easy, you can make a fantastic, fantastic
sky.
Copy !req
125. Looks like a nice sunset already.
Copy !req
126. And if you want to, you can go in here
with a fan brush and you can add some
Copy !req
127. little streakers.
Copy !req
128. Little streaky clouds. See?
Copy !req
129. That easy.
Copy !req
130. And you can put as many of these in as you
want.
Copy !req
131. Just want to show you how.
Copy !req
132. Clean, dry brush.
Copy !req
133. And then blend them right into the
painting.
Copy !req
134. Isn't that a beautiful sky?
Copy !req
135. And you can do it. There, wash the fan
brush.
Copy !req
136. I have some paper towels over here, I
just dry the fan brush on.
Copy !req
137. That's the fun part of this whole
technique.
Copy !req
138. Alrighty, now then we have to make a big
decision here.
Copy !req
139. Let's take our phthalo blue, alizarin
crimson, and I'm gonna make a dark, dark
Copy !req
140. lavender color.
Copy !req
141. On the palette, it should look black.
Copy !req
142. All right, we got her mixed here.
Copy !req
143. Now then, probably, let me show you
one other thing first.
Copy !req
144. One of the easiest ways to help you
with the seascape, because they're sort of
Copy !req
145. hard at first until you practice a little,
I'm gonna take the little filbert brush
Copy !req
146. here, and to that I've added a bunch
of paint thinner, so this is thin as water
Copy !req
147. nearly.
Copy !req
148. Sort of come in here and sketch out where
you want the major wave to be.
Copy !req
149. And let's just say it's gonna live, boom, right
there.
Copy !req
150. And this is not a commitment at this time.
Copy !req
151. You can still change it.
Copy !req
152. Zoom, comes up like that.
Copy !req
153. Maybe it comes over.
Copy !req
154. Maybe the foam's gonna crash up in here
somewhere like that.
Copy !req
155. Now our shoreline, maybe it'll come
Copy !req
156. Oh, like that. Something like that.
Copy !req
157. That just helps give you a little bit
of, sort of a layout.
Copy !req
158. And it'll really save you a lot of trouble.
Copy !req
159. Okay.
Copy !req
160. After you've practiced a while, maybe you
don't need to do this, but at first, I
Copy !req
161. really recommend you do it that way.
Copy !req
162. It'll help you lay it out.
Copy !req
163. Here I'm using that dark color we made.
Copy !req
164. It's a very dark lavender color.
Copy !req
165. See, if we had used liquid white here, when
we put this on, it would pick up the white
Copy !req
166. and you would lose this beautiful, beautiful
dark color.
Copy !req
167. There.
Copy !req
168. Liquid clear allows us to mix on the
canvas without changing the value of the
Copy !req
169. color.
Copy !req
170. Look at that.
Copy !req
171. And we'll just come right on down in here.
Copy !req
172. In here, we're gonna have the transparency,
or the bright spot of the wave.
Copy !req
173. That's the part of the wave, if you're
into selling paintings, that's the
Copy !req
174. part of the wave that sells.
Copy !req
175. That's what everybody wants to see.
Copy !req
176. It's that big, big crasher.
Copy !req
177. We'll come right in here.
Copy !req
178. And just sort of follow this guide.
Copy !req
179. All we're doing here is putting in some
dark color so our light will show later on.
Copy !req
180. Let me add a little more color.
Copy !req
181. Little more color.
Copy !req
182. Just alizarin crimson, phthalo blue.
Copy !req
183. Now when you're doing these at home, you
can add all kinds of colors.
Copy !req
184. A lot of times phthalo green is very
pretty in seascapes.
Copy !req
185. It is dynamite color, beautiful color.
Copy !req
186. But it's very strong, be careful with it.
Copy !req
187. See already, we have all of our dark areas
blocked in.
Copy !req
188. When you're using the big old two inch
brush, it didn't take but a second.
Copy !req
189. Okay.
Copy !req
190. Isn't that a beautiful, rich color?
Copy !req
191. Alright.
Copy !req
192. Now we can really start playing.
Copy !req
193. Let me grab my fan brush.
Copy !req
194. I'm gonna take
Copy !req
195. Same old colors, alizarin crimson and
phthalo blue.
Copy !req
196. Let's put some on the fan brush here.
Copy !req
197. Just load it back and forth like that.
Copy !req
198. Not a great deal of paint on the brush.
Copy !req
199. Okay, let's go up here.
Copy !req
200. Maybe there's a little footland back here.
Copy !req
201. That's a fancy name for a rock sticks out
in the water.
Copy !req
202. Little peninsula way back in the distance.
Copy !req
203. And this is too far away to show detail, so
don't worry about it.
Copy !req
204. All we're looking for here is just a basic
shape.
Copy !req
205. Okay, tell you what, shoot that was so
much fun, let's do another one.
Copy !req
206. Maybe there's another bigger stone in
front of it here, bigger foot.
Copy !req
207. This will help create the illusion of
distance in your painting.
Copy !req
208. And you can put all kind of things back
here.
Copy !req
209. You can put little trees on these
footlands and just whatever.
Copy !req
210. But it really helps.
Copy !req
211. See, it shows different planes in your
painting.
Copy !req
212. Hope you can see that. Okay.
Copy !req
213. Now, if it doesn't show up quite well
enough, you can take and add a little
Copy !req
214. highlight to it.
Copy !req
215. Just to get it to stand out a little more.
Copy !req
216. Maybe that'll help. You can see that
a little better now.
Copy !req
217. There we go, good.
Copy !req
218. Okay, and that quick we got a happy little
footland back here.
Copy !req
219. All right, now we can begin putting in
some of the good stuff.
Copy !req
220. I'll just start with just plain old
titanium white.
Copy !req
221. And we'll go right up here
Copy !req
222. And just begin putting in some happy
little highlights way back here in the
Copy !req
223. distance.
Copy !req
224. Barely, barely touching.
Copy !req
225. Barely touching.
Copy !req
226. And sort of like that, make all these
little things happen.
Copy !req
227. Bring it right around the base of this
little footland back here.
Copy !req
228. Now then, let's have some fun.
Copy !req
229. Let's go like right in here.
Copy !req
230. Watch here, grab it.
Copy !req
231. And just come right up like that.
Copy !req
232. Uh oh, what have we done now?
Copy !req
233. And maybe there's another one right here.
Copy !req
234. And back.
Copy !req
235. And let's go right along here.
Copy !req
236. Like that.
Copy !req
237. And then right along there.
Copy !req
238. See how easy that is?
Copy !req
239. Let me clean off the old brush here.
Copy !req
240. Okay.
Copy !req
241. Now then, I'm gonna take another fan brush
that's clean and very gently, very gently,
Copy !req
242. here, I'm just gonna begin doing like so.
Copy !req
243. See, just work that back.
Copy !req
244. Pay very, very close attention to angles.
Copy !req
245. All you want to leave in here is the dark
area.
Copy !req
246. This is a time when the dark areas are
much more important than the light areas.
Copy !req
247. And right in here, same thing.
Copy !req
248. Same thing.
Copy !req
249. See, just blend that up like that.
Copy !req
250. That's began to look pretty already.
Copy !req
251. Okay.
Copy !req
252. Now we can go right into a little bit of
white.
Copy !req
253. See, and begin making all these little
things that are far, far away, little
Copy !req
254. swells that are far in the distance.
Copy !req
255. Don't want too much detail back there.
Copy !req
256. There's our little foot.
Copy !req
257. Okay, good.
Copy !req
258. This painting, it'll teach you to be an
expert brush washer.
Copy !req
259. Let's go back into our blue and crimson.
Copy !req
260. Blue and crimson.
Copy !req
261. Just mix it right on the palette.
Copy !req
262. Alright, now this area here, we have to
put dark in before we can put our light
Copy !req
263. in.
Copy !req
264. So, let's just add a little bit of dark
color right here.
Copy !req
265. See how easy that is?
Copy !req
266. Follow that basic angle, so.
Copy !req
267. Look at that.
Copy !req
268. Look at there.
Copy !req
269. All we're doing is just applying dark.
Copy !req
270. We'll come back later and put all the
highlights on, the good parts.
Copy !req
271. Everybody wants to jump on these good
parts, but you have to do the framework
Copy !req
272. first.
Copy !req
273. Okay, now that we got some dark on there, let's
take some white, just use some titanium
Copy !req
274. white.
Copy !req
275. Lot of paint on the brush now, lot of
paint.
Copy !req
276. Okay, now then, grab this and pull it.
Copy !req
277. Pull it. The strokes are very important.
Copy !req
278. You might need to wash or wipe your brush.
Copy !req
279. Sometimes you can just wipe it in between
each stroke.
Copy !req
280. Because you're gonna pick up some of this
under color.
Copy !req
281. See, grab it and pull it.
Copy !req
282. Here, like that.
Copy !req
283. Okay.
Copy !req
284. Now then, let's get our little filbert
brush here.
Copy !req
285. I'm gonna go into white and the least
little touch of cadmium yellow.
Copy !req
286. White and yellow.
Copy !req
287. White and yellow. Okay, let's go up here.
Copy !req
288. Now then, let's go right in here.
Copy !req
289. This is the part that makes the painting
so pretty.
Copy !req
290. This is it.
Copy !req
291. All we're doing here is scrubbing in some
color.
Copy !req
292. And the light would come right along the
top of this wave, because the water's
Copy !req
293. thinner here.
Copy !req
294. Look at that.
Copy !req
295. Just like so, and maybe there's a touch
even right over in here.
Copy !req
296. Just a little bit right in there.
Copy !req
297. with a clean, dry, be sure it's dry, it's
most important, clean, dry two inch
Copy !req
298. brush, come right in here, very, very
gently, just begin blending this.
Copy !req
299. Now then, we're gonna begin picking up
some of this nice, rich lavender color we
Copy !req
300. have down here, and blending it right up
into it.
Copy !req
301. This is where we begin forming the basic
angle of the wave.
Copy !req
302. Now, I beat the brush just to remove
excess paint.
Copy !req
303. See, it doesn't matter if a little of that
color goes up in there.
Copy !req
304. That light, the light area will remain.
Copy !req
305. Just grab it and pull.
Copy !req
306. Okay. Let me find my little filbert brush
here.
Copy !req
307. We'll use some of this lavender color that
we have.
Copy !req
308. Same old lavender color.
Copy !req
309. Put a touch of white in it.
Copy !req
310. There we go.
Copy !req
311. Now let's begin putting some foam in there.
Copy !req
312. First, we'll put the shadows in.
Copy !req
313. Take his brush and just lay it over and
just really scrub it in.
Copy !req
314. Get tough with it, get mean with it.
Copy !req
315. Think about water churning and bubbling
and maybe it comes way up here and crashes
Copy !req
316. and splashes and all kinds of fantastic
little things are happening.
Copy !req
317. And this is only the shadow.
Copy !req
318. Only the shadow.
Copy !req
319. We'll come back and put the highlights
on in a second.
Copy !req
320. And then I'm gonna fill this in.
Copy !req
321. This needs to be good and dark also.
Copy !req
322. Like that.
Copy !req
323. And with our clean brush, we wanna
continue this angle.
Copy !req
324. Just grab it and bring it through.
Copy !req
325. Look at there.
Copy !req
326. Okay.
Copy !req
327. Now be sure your filbert brush is good and
clean and dry.
Copy !req
328. Now comes the fun part.
Copy !req
329. This is what we wait on.
Copy !req
330. Take white, cad yellow.
Copy !req
331. Load a lot of paint into the bristles.
Copy !req
332. Just really fill the son of a gun up.
Copy !req
333. Okay, now then.
Copy !req
334. Sort of hold the brush here and give it
a little upward push.
Copy !req
335. And it's that upward push, that's where
the splash happens.
Copy !req
336. And when you begin running out of paint, turn
it over and use the other side of the
Copy !req
337. brush.
Copy !req
338. And usually you can just wipe off the
excess.
Copy !req
339. You don't have to go through the whole
cleaning procedure.
Copy !req
340. You want to keep this color as pure as you
can.
Copy !req
341. Because it's gonna mix with what's on
there.
Copy !req
342. Okay, plenty of paint on the brush.
Copy !req
343. Plenty of paint.
Copy !req
344. Splashing way up here.
Copy !req
345. All kinds of beautiful little things are
happening.
Copy !req
346. Continually wipe that brush, keep it
good and clean.
Copy !req
347. And we'll have a little bit, boom.
Copy !req
348. Oh, you can get carried away with these.
Copy !req
349. You can really get carried away and have a
super time.
Copy !req
350. Seascapes are fun.
Copy !req
351. There, okay.
Copy !req
352. Clean off the brush.
Copy !req
353. Okay, now with a good, clean, dry brush, you
just want to sort of mix this together.
Copy !req
354. That'll sort of make a different value, a
medium value here, because it'll mix with
Copy !req
355. the dark and the light, brings it all
together.
Copy !req
356. Just stir it up a little bit.
Copy !req
357. Okay.
Copy !req
358. Now then, good, clean, dry two-inch brush,
just the corner, and just mix this
Copy !req
359. up.
Copy !req
360. All you have to do is just very gently
bring all this together.
Copy !req
361. Very gently.
Copy !req
362. This is two hairs and some air.
Copy !req
363. Barely, barely touching.
Copy !req
364. And that easy, we have it.
Copy !req
365. Now then, I'm gonna take paint thinner, yellow
and white,
Copy !req
366. And be sure your paint is as thin as ink.
Copy !req
367. So very thin, water consistency.
Copy !req
368. Let's go right up here.
Copy !req
369. This nice bright area here, there's gonna
be all kinds of light shining through.
Copy !req
370. Just put all these happy little things.
Copy !req
371. And at home, when you have unlimited time,
you can just really go in here and put
Copy !req
372. all kinds of beautiful, beautiful little
things.
Copy !req
373. Okay.
Copy !req
374. Come right along here and just sparkle
that like so.
Copy !req
375. Alright.
Copy !req
376. Now, let's take some white, a little touch
of the phthalo blue, very little blue.
Copy !req
377. White and blue.
Copy !req
378. And let's begin working on some happy
little things that are just floating right
Copy !req
379. on down through here.
Copy !req
380. All kinds of little, this is where you
begin forming the wave.
Copy !req
381. This gives it shape, gives it character.
Copy !req
382. Look at that.
Copy !req
383. And back in here, just bring it right on
back.
Copy !req
384. Let's have some fun.
Copy !req
385. Right under that light area, I'm gonna go
right into some cad yellow.
Copy !req
386. We'll just throw that right on there.
Copy !req
387. Right into the yellow ochre, just like we
did the sky.
Copy !req
388. Right into some bright red.
Copy !req
389. We got us a fireball going here.
Copy !req
390. Then I'm gonna reach into dark sienna.
Copy !req
391. Little bit more dark sienna here.
Copy !req
392. Then right into Van Dyke brown.
Copy !req
393. Over here I want it to get quite dark so
it makes that light really stand out.
Copy !req
394. Okay, now then.
Copy !req
395. And then with a clean brush, all you
have to do is blend all this together.
Copy !req
396. Just blend it together.
Copy !req
397. Let the colors sort of mix.
Copy !req
398. And then lightly, lightly, lightly go
across.
Copy !req
399. Lightly go across.
Copy !req
400. Then we'll take a fan brush.
Copy !req
401. I'm gonna put titanium white with the
least, least little touch of phthalo blue
Copy !req
402. on it.
Copy !req
403. And then let's come right in here and
begin making all kinds of happy little
Copy !req
404. foam things.
Copy !req
405. Just laying out here, having a good time.
Copy !req
406. Leave some of these dark areas.
Copy !req
407. Leave some dark areas, don't kill them
all.
Copy !req
408. and begin paying attention to the shape of
the wave.
Copy !req
409. It's very important.
Copy !req
410. Very important. Over here, I have some
coming up like that.
Copy !req
411. Now, while I got the old brush going, I'll
just take it right into some brown, and
Copy !req
412. let's have maybe just some sand right here.
Copy !req
413. Comes right, there it is, look at there.
Copy !req
414. This is just brown with a little touch of
white that was left on it.
Copy !req
415. Right down like that. A little bit of sand
on the beach.
Copy !req
416. Van Dyke brown, dark sienna, a little
touch of white.
Copy !req
417. Little seagulls have got to have a place
to run.
Copy !req
418. Okay, now.
Copy !req
419. Take a little paint there, with some dark
paint, and we just run a little line
Copy !req
420. right into here.
Copy !req
421. Like so.
Copy !req
422. paint thinner with some of the light blue,
and we can just put the indication
Copy !req
423. of a little bit of water playing all down
there on the beach.
Copy !req
424. Put all kinds of little lines and stuff
here and there.
Copy !req
425. See how easy that is?
Copy !req
426. And it really makes some nice, nice
effects.
Copy !req
427. And let's have a happy little stone
that lives right there.
Copy !req
428. This is just Van Dyke brown.
Copy !req
429. Shoot, I tell you what, we'll have another
little stone right there.
Copy !req
430. Gonna pull a little bit down.
Copy !req
431. Grab it.
Copy !req
432. Makes a reflection.
Copy !req
433. Take the little knife.
Copy !req
434. And we'll put the least little touch
of some highlights on here.
Copy !req
435. Like so.
Copy !req
436. The old clock on the wall's telling me, got
to stop for today.
Copy !req
437. So with that, I think we'll call this
painting finished.
Copy !req
438. I sincerely hope you've enjoyed it.
Copy !req
439. That'll give you a good idea of how to do
a fantastic seascape.
Copy !req
440. Happy painting, God bless.
