1. - It's really important when building viral content

2. that you hook the viewer immediately.

3. It's Gymkhana 10.

4. Maybe we've watched a couple before.

5. We have high expectations of what you're gonna get.

6. It starts, you get a quick little glimpse of

7. what's going on,

8. like we got five different locations,

9. and you're gonna kind of feel this

10. in the way we do the launch,

11. and then all of a sudden...

12. Here you are on ice.

13. And in your head you're like, ooh, it's ice?

14. That's something completely new.

15. I haven't seen them do it on snow before.

16. This has to be good,

17. because if this doesn't hook you in the beginning,

18. then you're out.

19. We get accused often of, like,

20. it's the same old shit every time, right?

21. So this is our attempt to try and to make it

22. not the same old shit.

23. But, I don't know if this is the right way of going about it

24. 'cause, like, there's a lot of bands,

25. and I'm like, man, it's the same old shit all the time,

26. and then they do a fucking EDM album,

27. and I'm like, fuck you, that's not what I wanted you to do.

28. I just wanted you to stay punk rock.

29. Maybe this could be our EDM album.

30. And there's extra pressure on this segment,

31. 'cause it's first up in the film.

32. I love that these boys just go about it like

33. this is just totally normal,

34. just like another day of winter in Sweden.

35. Oh, we're moving.

36. Translating what we've done,

37. and what we've been so successful of doing on pavement,

38. and now doing that on ice.

39. Does the car have that same energy?

40. One of things where I can picture it all in my head,

41. but this whole game is taking my picture in my head

42. and actually making that a reality on film.

43. I just kinda wanna see, like, yeah, if it—

44. I think it'll actually deflect less when it's spinning.

45. I actually, like, got out and, like,

46. drove some sections of this in the rental car,

47. like, I normally wouldn't do that.

48. I normally can kinda sit and look at it and say,

49. okay, yeah, that makes sense.

50. Knowing that there's so many variables with Sweden really,

51. I couldn't just depend on the art team getting this right.

52. - Whoa!

53. - I think the main thing is, as long as he

54. kinda comes off semi straight—

55. - Yeah, he'll be fine.

56. - Or at least steering into the edge,

57. so that he doesn't like.

58. - But I guess if you're going, like, 60 miles an hour,

59. then it's a hell of a lot of a difference, right?

60. I think he would.

61. - That was such a mellow hit!

62. - It was all good until Matthew got in.

63. Yeah, I'm bad luck.

64. - Just threw it off.

65. - Uh, yeah.

66. - Yeah, find the muzzlers,

67. we hit there so slow.

68. This thing is nowhere near as fun as Ken's cars.

69. Ken's always kind of had this thing

70. with, like, snow in his life.

71. That's why he moved to Park City,

72. 'cause he loves the mountains and snow and stuff like that.

73. And when he did his first rally, with proper studs,

74. back in 2011, to go see Sweden.

75. - That experience really kind of woke me up

76. to the idea of how much grip you could have

77. on the snow and ice, with that sort of tire.

78. There's more grip,

79. like, on a snowy, icy road with those tires,

80. than we would have on gravel with our gravel tires.

81. And that's just insane to me.

82. Now here we go again.

83. - I was, like, oh, wow,

84. we should do a Gymkhana on ice.

85. That's really fucking cool.

86. - But the biggest problem with that idea, though,

87. is really cost,

88. because the weather is so unpredictable.

89. So if you fly 50 people over to make this video,

90. you could literally spend a lot of money,

91. and get nothing.

92. - It's rare that we go somewhere,

93. and it's actually better than the thought in my head.

94. Like, that's only happened a few times,

95. like, Gymkhana Five drift jump,

96. and, like, water's edge in Gymkhana Nine.

97. I think that we maybe hoped that those moments

98. would have happened at South Gate,

99. 'cause it was something new and different,

100. and I think because of that,

101. we put a ton of pressure on that segment.

102. I think we all thought it was gonna be really, really good,

103. and it was, like, from the first moment,

104. it was just a realization that, like,

105. this is not going to be what we want it to be.

106. - I would do things in a different order or—

107. - I would like to go home at this point.

108. This all sucks.

109. We have what we have there, and I think in the end,

110. South Gate could be okay,

111. but the rest of them all have to be extra strong,

112. 'cause we can't just have every piece be solid.

113. That's not what makes a film.

114. Like, there needs to be some moments that are just,

115. like, really big and really strong.

116. And I think that there's opportunity

117. for, like, really big moments here.

118. - Beautiful.

119. - I'm fucking cold.

121. The two of you telling Matt it's minus 26 right now?

122. Minus 26 and sunny.

123. - Alright, so we'll look at this—

126. - The other day, we went over there

127. after they'd started to cut some roads out,

128. and we realized that they're construction workers,

129. so they don't really kind of understand

130. the corners that you want for, like,

131. a racetrack type set up.

132. Because it's way better if we can loop stuff.

133. If you can keep Ken hot,

134. he's gonna perform a lot better.

135. So, like, I wanna be able to have him, like,

136. rip through here, do this moment,

137. exit through here, and then feel comfortable enough

138. to come ripping down through here,

139. come back through here, loop through here,

140. and then come back in and do it again.

141. So, I had Will do a fly over

142. and just take some shots with the drone,

143. and that way I can hand this off

144. to the guys in construction and say,

145. go nip a little here, tuck a little there,

146. and cut a new road here,

147. so I've got, like, another kind of rotation.

148. Stuff like that.

149. - We all learned a lot from L.A.

150. I'm glad Brian headed out early,

151. because when we shoot in such a remote location,

152. we need to be prepared for anything.

153. We simply can't afford to have another shoot

154. feel like L.A. did.

155. - We woke up at about 4 a.m. to get here

156. for a 5:00 set up.

157. Drove the truck in and then the bottom fell out it,

158. and it's now stuck sort of in between

159. the ice and the bottom of the shore.

160. - Yeah, one of the things that's kind of alarming about this

161. is we were told this wouldn't happen.

162. - The locals haven't seen it happen like that before,

163. with the weight of the truck, they were quite happy with it,

164. but obviously the ice wasn't thick enough.

165. - What's all that over your face?

166. Yeah, it is, it's like— look like Hare Krishna, mate.

167. - It's always a bummer when,

168. on day one, you just know you're not gonna get

169. that cadence, 'cause, like these shoots

170. come together when we just get that motion

171. and everything starts to kind of flow and work together,

172. and there's no way that that's going to happen today.

173. We've already got a truck that's broken through the ice.

174. It's snowing, which it wasn't supposed to be.

175. So it's already a few things, a little slow,

176. and so hopefully by the middle of the day today

177. we start to pick up speed.

178. The main trick we want to film today is a tether shot.

179. We're strapping Ken's car to a pole

180. where he's going to do a tethered 360

181. until we release him with a small explosion.

182. This is going to be the opening of the film,

183. so it's really important that it looks as amazing as possible.

184. To get the traction we need,

185. in order to get the speed we need,

186. we are installing studs into the tires.

187. But, since our truck fell through the ice,

188. that was our garage,

189. so now the mechanics have to set this all up

190. in negative 30 degree weather.

191. - Rally mechanics don't work in heated garages.

192. They're used to working without a vehicle there.

193. They're used to changing motors and trannies on their backs.

194. So it doesn't phase the guys, we got the right clothes,

195. we're keeping a good attitude and this is the first day,

196. so if it gets us now, Friday's gonna be really long.

197. - By the way— by the way, this was Ken's idea.

198. - Oh, was it? - Yeah.

199. - I wanted to go to Miami, but no,

200. we're in Sweden instead.

201. - A choice between L.A. or Sweden?

207. - The thing I was looking forward to most

208. about filming in Sweden really was being able

209. to drive the WRC car.

210. This is the World Championship winning spec car,

211. and we get to play with it on the snow

212. with studded tires and fun obstacles.

213. - Ken got in last night,

214. kind of reviewed everything this morning and I— you know,

215. I told him this is only gonna be as good as you drive.

216. It's, like, we normally don't shoot in wide open air

217. because wide open doesn't look fast.

218. Like, you have no point of reference,

219. and here we are shooting in, like, wide open snow,

220. and on ice and there's not as much reference for things.

221. So I guess my biggest fear is that

222. it just doesn't look good on camera.

226. - Oh, so this is kind of like Russian roulette.

231. doing this with, like, a UTV or something,

232. but never with a full on half million dollar WRC car.

238. I didn't know if I was going for five minutes, 10 minutes,

239. like, we were going for maximum speed.

245. That worked perfectly, that was exactly what we wanted,

246. but this is our first shot up in the video and on camera

247. you just can't tell any definition or texture in snow,

248. 'cause you got a white car,

249. you got a white ground, you got a white sky,

250. and this can't be the opening shot of the film.

252. We didn't fly halfway around the world

253. to not see Sweden.

254. We could have just shot this in Michigan.

260. I knew— I knew when you have five days of scouting

261. that are just beautiful,

262. you're gonna get boned on your day of filming,

264. I knew getting texture was going to be tough,

265. so I had Matthew design some ice fishing huts

266. we can use as back drops for a little added color.

269. - It's nice, nice, fresh wood.

272. - They were literally built every single house

273. that was over there.

274. This is nice Swedish contemporary tutti frutti design.

275. We're painting 'em all sorts of crazy colors

276. so they really pop.

277. And then with the snowmen going around and everything else

278. it's just, like, super, super cool.

279. I saw an aerial shot,

280. and it looked just the way I wanted it to.

281. In fact, maybe even better.

282. I mean, really is— it's freakin' spectacular.

284. - The basic idea of the carousel came from

285. just an Internet video, you know?

286. And we thought, hey, that would be a great obstacle

287. for us, for Gymkhana 10,

288. because we're trying to find things which,

289. if you lived in Mexico, or you lived in the Philippines,

290. and you didn't know much about it,

291. you would hopefully be blown away

292. by not only the driving and control on snow and ice,

293. but also the creativity that we brought to that.

294. - Is there a chance that this thing cracks in half?

295. There is a dive team back there

296. ready to come in and get you.

297. - It's like a weird thing to think about, like,

298. oh, well, if he screws up he's going to fall

299. into ice water that's 11 meters deep.

304. they wouldn't be able to find it.

505. The ultimate goal for this jump

506. is to outdo what we did in San Francisco.

507. Not only will Ken be doing a drift jump

508. over a 10 foot gap,

509. but Oliver will be sliding his car underneath

510. at the exact same time.

511. If all goes well, we might have

512. one of the gnarliest jumps we've ever shot.

515. we just wrecked his WRC car.

559. Today was amazing, you know, it was a dream come true,

560. and I get to drive with Ken and all his crew like this.

573. jumping cars is actually a simple thing

574. because it's just mathematics.

575. For us, we want to add this skill level to it,

576. and when you add a drift, that's where the skill comes in.

577. - It looks pretty mellow.

581. - It looks cool from the side, but it looks pretty simple.

582. Yeah, I think we should push it and drift it.

583. I mean, that was the concept.

587. and you can kind of get the car sideways again.

588. - Last night we sort of smoothed out the land.

589. Took out a lot of the bumps,

590. made it about five meters longer,

591. so it's a smoother transition for him.

592. I think it's so much better than it was yesterday.

593. It's way flatter, it's way harder,

594. and with a little bit more water—

597. There's no R, there's no T, there's a couple Ds in there.

604. - As a racecar driver you just never get to do that,

605. and for me, when I started racing rally cars,

606. I thought, man, these things are so much fun—

608. you get to play with them is, like, testing,

609. and then competition and that's it.

610. So I think it is fun to just do some

611. slides around some stuff.

612. We call it eye candy, meaning that, like,

613. we're trying to entertain people with fun visuals.

614. That's what a lot of people don't understand,

615. that we're basically entertainers.

616. I get to go drive, at the end of the day

617. that's what I want to do, I want to get in the car and drive,

618. but we've gotta sell, like, a lifestyle,

619. and sell cool content to people.

620. - I've never thought about it like a big thing,

621. but now it's everything, it's like 50%

622. of your racing career if you want to go somewhere.

623. - Well, the difference between, like, you and your dad,

624. is your dad didn't grow up with that.

625. Now a big part of it is how many followers do you have,

626. how much exposure can you give your sponsors,

627. how can you integrate with them.

628. It's just a different world. You know? So...

629. But that's— unfortunately, that's where it's going,

630. and the good thing is you're quite young

631. so you can kind of learn it and then

632. apply it and then use that to gain more sponsorship.
