1. - I've always said that like,

2. when this actually becomes too much like a job

3. then I would quit because I'm not doing

4. this for the money, I'm not doing this for the fame.

5. I just purely love driving rally type cars.

6. And I love the creativity that this affords me also.

7. And then there's catwalks everywhere.

8. There's like, second—

9. - Yeah as far as filming it's amazing space.

10. - This might be a rad shot because

11. of the framing coming through, just shooting from that way.

12. It's all really, really fun and rewarding

13. but at the same time there's so many sponsor requirements.

14. And getting back and recovering from jet lag

15. and all that.

16. From the initial idea that I was writing briefs

17. to the day that we finally post a video.

18. There's just a lot of work in there that gets done.

19. I'm only concerned about this place

20. with this surface that speed might be an issue.

21. - But we'll play with it. - I don't know.

22. - This is the old Firestone factory

23. which I think was built in— I wanna say 1929.

24. But it has these monster freight elevators

25. which one of the gags is gonna be taking

26. the car up in the elevator and the elevator doors open

27. and then the car is chained to the wall.

28. Ken will put the throttle on and start turning the wheels

29. and all the sparks start flying off.

30. It's gonna be nuts.

31. You remember that scene in "Flash Dance," you know,

32. where she's like welding, you know all that.

33. And she's swaying, she's like doing the dance

34. and she's like water dripping all over her

35. and stuff like that, it's gonna be like that.

36. Maybe hotter.

37. - Is this area we're going to a good example

38. of the rest of the stuff we're—

39. - It's similar to this which is the slickest of what we have.

40. So if it works well on this it should work well

41. on the rest of the situation, so.

42. - What if it doesn't work well on this?

43. - I haven't actually looked at where we are.

44. I just found out while you're doing test.

45. - It's very, very similar to downstairs.

50. The problem is we had done zero testing.

56. That's where we're gonna be filming

57. but we can't go there today.

76. We're gonna do a rim test with our forklift for warmup.

77. As soon as we're done with that, we'll go

78. onto tires and we'll do our exterior kind

79. of course, just out here where you see the semis.

80. And then we'll move up to the second floor

81. where we have three versions of a launch to do.

82. Ken driving another little mini course up there

83. and also some narrative work

84. to end our work on the second floor.

85. - Two simple things though, we haven't done this before.

87. - This is an unusual situation, just understand that.

88. Put something over your eyes

89. and definitely have ear protection.

90. - If the car's on fire, something like that, say something.

93. So we'll start moving towards testing, okay.

94. Ken's about two minutes out.

95. - Part of putting together a Gymkhana

96. is realizing that like, there's multiple heroes.

97. Like Ken is one of the heroes as the driver

98. but the car is also the hero.

99. So the car for shooting in LA at Southgate

100. was the Ford Escort Cosworth.

101. More affectionately known as just the Cossie.

102. It's kind of the pinnacle of group A racing in WRC.

103. Not even like a version of the car that was sold here.

104. And that instantly makes it cooler.

105. Definitely a car that I think Ken personally just wanted

106. and because the Escort's not like

107. an overwhelmingly powerful car,

108. it seemed to kind of fit perfect for the rims idea.

109. - Ah ready, ready.

110. Here we go, Scotto.

111. In suspension when you set up a tire, right,

112. a tire actually doesn't really lay flat.

113. The tire has camber, so camber is how much you tilt

114. it in and out of wheel well.

115. It almost seems like we've gotta give

116. it like a positive one. Can you do that?

117. - Alright, try another round here, Dan.

118. - Even when the camber is zero

119. it doesn't ride the outer ring.

120. It's still all inside ring.

121. It's unlike a regular tire where you're rotating around,

122. even as you like lean over you're not getting

123. the tire to mold to the ground the way that rubber does.

128. - It's the slickest concrete you've ever seen.

129. No bite, no grip, hardly any spark.

130. Factoring into that, if there's no grip,

131. you can't get any speed.

132. So it's just like the slowest, dumbest looking thing.

133. - Well that looks really sketchy and out of control.

135. That's the limit of what I can do.

136. - That day started horribly and it's like—

138. I am not a concrete expert but I can pretty clearly see this

139. is no where near what we had in Utah.

140. And I can't see that we can somehow get it there.

145. as well go home we've got nothing to film, so.

146. Part of the reason we weren't getting sparks

147. and also part of the reason we weren't getting grip

148. was that the concrete was smoothing out the metal

149. and kind of vice versa, almost like an abrasive disc.

150. And what it was doing was just kind of caking up

151. and then it wasn't sparking anymore.

152. - So Derek, we're gonna move it to the other location

153. to test 'cause this floor is a lot slipperier

154. than the one over there.

155. So what we thought was if we cut some grooves in it,

156. A, it'd give us a little bit more traction

157. but more importantly it would create more spark

158. 'cause it's like a rougher edge.

159. It's like a serrated knife versus a butter knife.

160. We should have tested the place we were filming.

161. And that was the huge mistake.

162. And I had asked for it to happen

163. and when you're looking at and chasing after budgets.

164. We would have learned a lot if we would've gotten out

165. there and been able to do a test before we'd go out to do this.

166. - Here we go guys for car test, here we go.

167. - I was wondering what this stuff would do on asphalt.

168. I guess we're gonna find out.

169. - I think it's gonna work awesome out here.

171. - We went from Detroit where like, everything was great

172. and then like, it just— everything was falling apart.

234. is that the modern car, if you do something like,

235. let's say, throw a rod out the block,

236. you have a replacement engine.

239. it'll be two days before they can rebuild the engine.

240. So that puts us through Friday.

241. We're not here in this building on Friday.

300. What we're up against is this is a early '90s

301. World Rally car and while we do have

302. a new motor coming down from Seattle, Washington,

303. it's sort of a street car motor.

304. That is heavily modified.

305. The motor mounts are different.

306. The different fittings and intake and exhaust manifolds.

307. All of that's entirely different,

308. so we don't really know what we're in for

309. until we know exactly what we're getting in the mail.

310. - It's actually split that rod like that.

311. - It's nice the gun show here as well.

314. And that's number two, where it should be.

520. hoping that we can get a little bit more grip out of it.

521. And we're gonna do a little test to see

522. if he can actually get the necessary acceleration.

524. - I have a radar gun.

525. - But are we gonna have anything in car for him to look at?

526. - I have a GPS but it's so short it doesn't get to land.

527. So we're just gonna go do it.

528. - I love this, the one thing that the driver needs

552. And you throw in the fact that like there's delays

553. 'cause the camera battery's dead or the light's not right

554. or something's wrong some other way

555. and I have to sit there and like,

556. it's not easy doing it on the delays

557. and the calls of when it needs to happen.

561. with a trick to do in the meantime while we wait.
