1. - I go and start talking to people, and they're like, oh, what do you do?

2. I'm like, aw, you know, I make these videos about cars,

3. they're called Gymkhana.

4. They don't know. No recognition.

5. This guy Ken Block, rally racing, no recognition.

6. 'Cause they're not in the world, they don't live—

7. Keep talking and then eventually they're like,

8. wait, you guys shut down that bridge in San Francisco.

9. - I mean, Five was rad.

10. You know, we shut down the Bay Bridge.

11. - There were elements like that in the video

12. that I was just really stoked on because—

13. - We jumped Russian Hill.

14. - We tried to make this look kind of wild.

15. - That's like, that's that weird thing

16. that just connects with people.

17. - Everyone has a favorite.

18. I mean, everyone's like, I like Gymkhana Seven.

19. Gymkhana Two.

20. I like Gymkhana Five.

21. - I think the forever goal is to beat Gymkhana Five.

22. - You know, it's like, how are we gonna top this?

23. So that's why we're like, five locations.

24. Five different vehicles.

25. Five completely different concepts.

26. But the stakes are like—

27. We go through all this work and we make a whole show

28. following the process.

29. So it's like, hey, check it out,

30. here's all the skeletons in the closet and how we make this.

31. So we're exposing ourselves to that,

32. and then, if the end result isn't

33. as good as we're promoting it to be...

34. that's embarrassing.

35. - The first time I ever came here,

36. I was just driving cross-country for a magazine article.

37. At the time, it was just a cool place to shoot cars

38. 'cause everything was just abandoned

39. and there was no one here to bother you.

40. But then we came back here

41. to scout Gym Three in 2010, Ken?

42. - Something like that, yeah.

43. - Yeah, and the city told us, "No, thank you."

44. They really wanted us to focus more on downtown Detroit

45. and not the Detroit ruins.

46. - There were blogs of photographers

47. putting out photos of the urban decay

48. and that's the stuff I loved and—

49. - And that's why we wanted to come here.

50. - Yeah, and you know,

51. I think the story of Detroit is so cool

52. that the automotive industry and then times changing,

53. and to me, you can't show this place

54. without the cool urban decay.

55. And they didn't wanna show it at all, really.

56. - We're returning now, six years later,

57. with the exact same concept as we had last time.

58. Okay, Ken, so up ahead on your right hand side

59. we'll be passing a rather steep wall

60. I'd like you to drive over.

61. - You know when you're driving down the highway

62. and you see concrete at an angle,

63. and if you have a really good imagination

64. or you're like a 12 year old, you're like,

65. man, I wish I could hit that in a truck full speed,

66. like Dukes of Hazzard style.

67. - We can't push things much further

68. without them getting into the world of ridiculous stunts.

69. We don't do loop-de-loops, we don't do barrel rolls.

70. That's just not who we are.

71. But at the same time,

72. I wanted to bring something new to Detroit.

73. - Oh boy, I don't even think if I get the cars loose,

74. they will even stick.

75. - Looks pretty far down, man.

76. - Were we supposed to stop?

77. - Well, we were gonna go look at it

78. from the top and come back, but we're already here,

79. - so we can— - Yeah.

80. - I mean, I have my hazards on. - We're safe.

81. - So it's totally safe. - Yeah.

82. - So for this trick,

83. I need Ken to transition onto the wall.

84. Kind of drift around like an alley-oop or vertical donut.

85. The art department needs to build a transition

86. to get him up onto the wall.

87. They can either make a ramp or a slight kicker.

88. We've used both in our films.

89. This is an example of a ramp.

90. This is a kicker.

91. Ramp, kicker,

92. ramp, kicker.

93. - So we are building two ramps

94. for a sequence we're doing on the 75 Freeway.

95. Yeah, we've had like 48 hours to this point

96. to build two massive ramps which have legs

97. and a lot of stuff going on.

98. - And Ken is very skeptical of the trick.

99. He doesn't know how the car is gonna behave

100. or what he's gonna get away with—

101. - I'm just telling you, it may not go well.

102. - I mean, it would be pretty sick looking,

103. and it would give us one really unique trick

104. here in Detroit.

105. - I think you should have a backup.

106. - Yeah.

107. - When we showed up in Detroit and it's day one,

108. it's a rain day.

109. It's never fun to start a shoot with a rain day.

110. - For the past year, I've been having a shoulder issue,

111. and I can't do a pushup right now.

112. So I went in to get the MRI and they put me in the machine,

113. and I got in and the edge of where you can see is here,

114. and I freaked out and made them take me back out of it.

115. And I don't have necessarily a claustrophobic,

116. like if you put me in a small space or whatever,

117. I'm like, I'm in a small space.

118. But as long as I can move my arms

119. and if there's an escape route, great.

120. But, one of my biggest nightmares

121. is if you rolled me up in a carpet,

122. and this was literally that in a medical form.

123. So I tried four times to get in there

124. and I got in there one time for six minutes,

125. and they got one scan done.

126. I tell myself in my mind,

127. just get in there and just do it.

128. But the physical revulsion of being in that situation

129. kept me from staying in it.

130. I couldn't, I tried four different times.

131. They even made me fast the night before so I hadn't eaten,

132. so I felt kind of queasy.

133. I'm like, okay, I'll try and eat.

134. Went and ate, I felt better.

135. I'm like, okay, I think I can do this.

136. And I got back in there, and as I was going back in,

137. my shoulder really rubbed against the side

138. of the MRI machine, and I'm like, ahhh!

139. Yeah, I felt like I failed.

140. - Copy check.

141. - Copy, we are starting to pull out

142. if you're ready ready.

143. - Yeah, we're on the move, guys, yep.

144. - I was going to suggest go get umbrellas

145. so we can walk outside.

146. - Yeah, Nate was talking about—

161. So our days are— We only have two days and they're really short.

176. So again, this is our start position right here,

177. once he launches, go forward.

178. By the time he hits the corner he'll

179. probably be almost sixth gear.

190. and it's like, ah, like come on,

191. you know, we gotta spend money and that's never fun.

192. I want to spend that money on doing cool stuff,

193. on building a ramp, or doing this,

194. or getting this crazy location,

195. what I don't wanna spend it on

196. is us sitting in a hotel, waiting the rain out.

197. I mean one of the things that's happening here,

198. which has never happened anywhere else

199. we've ever filmed, is they're not

200. closing down the other lane of traffic anywhere we go.

209. but the highway, the freeways,

210. anything that's got like a jersey barrier in the middle.

211. - So wait when we do the wall ride?

212. - There will be cars on the other side.

213. - People are going to crash and die.

214. - On the other side—

215. - People are going, there's gonna be a jackknifed truck.

216. Detroit is, it's a nice place to visit.

217. - We were waiting on approval for the permit,

218. based on preliminary, pre-scout information.

219. - Uh, Nathan is working furiously

220. on it as we speak.

221. - Obviously after the scout we've added a couple of requests

222. which I probably won't add.

224. And then we'll ask forgiveness later.

243. - There's one moment over the next two days

244. that I'm very concerned about, the highway moment.

245. But I saw Derek last night, he's like,

246. oh yeah, the stunt guy showed me photos, yeah, so.

247. We did this one, on Gymkhana Four,

248. I think it's one of my favorite shots of all time,

249. the entire crew was on lunch

250. and we just went to go do a pick up of one shot

251. and it was all supposed to be on-car rig work,

252. but the steady cam guy was still standing there,

253. so he was like, well I'm just gonna roll on it

254. and it's one of the best shots we ever got

255. because Ken just came so violently through this corner.

256. - And just comes like booking in and just—

257. - If you look at it, the full rig is on the car.

258. Like it clearly wasn't supposed to be in the film

259. but it was just this moment that we caught.

260. Just giving Ken that perfect playground

261. to be able to do that is what helps,

262. so it's like, not only it being dry,

263. but us staying on time, keeping him in the car,

264. keeping him hot, keeping him moving and all of that stuff.

265. - I'm Jeremy, I'm your assistant director

266. for the next couple days.

267. So first of all welcome back guys, thank you for being here.

268. First thing that we're gonna do today will be

269. Ken launching from the chains here,

270. shooting out of the tunnel to a right turn

271. and shutting down,

272. so this will be our primary shooting area here.

273. At least until mother nature is a little kinder.

274. - Safety issues around the vehicle, it's moving fast,

275. try not to get between it and anything else.

276. Always be on your toes, always be watching the car.

277. Never not watch the car.

278. If you're behind the car, tires throw rocks,

279. get yourself some safety goggles.

280. Lastly, this vehicle runs on methanol.

281. Interesting thing about it is you do not see the flames.

282. - But like a regular gas fire, you obviously see it

283. and you know to do something about it,

284. but a methanol fire is clear,

285. so that's all part of why we're taking extra precautions

286. to try and minimize my potential death.

287. - In the incident that there is an issue,

288. Eli will be the first responder to the vehicle

289. in full fire suit.

305. any sort of major issue, let's keep it that way.

367. - When we first built the Hoonicorn,

368. we really built one of the most unique all-wheel drive

369. vehicles in the entire world.

370. - I did in fact sit in it, as Ken drove it.

371. Boy, does it feel fast.

372. - When we built that car for Gym Seven,

373. it just had 800 horsepower, it was really good.

374. - The Hoonicorn was already stupid fast.

375. But then we decided to add 600 horsepower,

376. twin turbos, and methanol.

377. There's plenty of really high horsepower cars

378. around the world,

379. but there aren't' a lot of

380. 1400 horsepower cars that get driven on an everyday road.

381. - It's crazy man, it is,

382. I've been in the passenger seat

383. you know, on medium hot,

384. shaking it down, and it's frightening.

385. It's the fastest car I've ever been in.

386. It's a drag car.

387. And he does corners in it.

388. - I'm fighting its effort to kill me.

395. The Segway trick has become synonymous with Gymkhana.

396. - No one had ever said, let's showcase

397. and show an all-wheel drive donut.

398. So the idea of doing it around a moving object

399. was what I came up with.

400. That was actually revolutionary in the motorsport world.

401. Something totally original.

402. - Something about it, like it's gimmicky,

403. it's funny.

404. - Around another human that could technically die...

405. if I hit them, really badly.

406. - But then at the same time,

407. you kinda wanna watch the guy on the Segway

408. get wrecked by a car.

409. - Stand by for a hot lock please, hot lock.

445. which is this negative word in Australia,

447. And we took it and sort of flipped it, and it was like,

448. there's nothing wrong with doing that type of stuff,

449. it's just doing it on safe areas,

450. so if you're out on a race track sliding around,

451. that's not a bad thing.

455. - I grew up in New York City, in the early '90s,

456. half my friends are in jail, the other half are dead,

457. and I got out of it because I got into cars

536. Hopefully we get a really good first trick out

537. in the morning and it's really solid.

538. Because I think yesterday we had that with Segway.

539. We were super stoked, I think that that came off

540. way better than we thought it was going to

541. and then he ends up hitting a curb on the simplest thing.

542. That wasn't even really a major moment,

543. he was just transitioning.

545. I mean this sucks.

546. - And then it happened again.

547. That has never happened before.

548. And I think for him that started to get into his head.

549. - This is not a great way to start off a five-segment shoot.

550. - It's just like anything you do,

551. you don't want your star athlete to be sitting there,

552. thinking, oh I fucked up

553. and now I don't wanna do that again.

554. - We're looking for that picture so,

555. you know, we need to be a bit radical with the lines,

556. but the car, it's raining a bit,

557. there's bit of pollution on the roads,

558. there's a bit of oil on the roads,

559. so we don't get a chance to practice on it.

560. So Ken has to go in hot.

561. - I mean to really even try a reverse entry wide,

562. it would really high to commitment,

563. but might look really rad too,

564. because it would be a different version of that.

565. We could try that first and see how that works out.

566. - The two things that I like that you said there

567. was "high commitment" and "really rad."

568. So that's what I'm looking for here.

569. - I mean it's just so big and so wide,

570. I don't know what the car's gonna do.

571. I just don't know, especially with now water on the ground.

602. The last shot is what we're looking for,

603. we just gotta tighten that up now.

613. - So we're not ready at the fist yet,

614. so you and I are going to go to the highway right now

615. and just put eyes on that and see if we wanna change it.

616. - We're gonna go to the highway while they work on the car?

618. - There's a concrete embankment on the 75 freeway.

619. And it's at a 25-degree angle.

620. So if he drives a car into it,

621. you know the car's so low to the ground,

622. he's gonna bottom it out and wreck the car,

623. so we have to build a transition ramp

624. so he can get off the freeway

625. and go on to the embankment without ruining his car.

626. The thing is pretty huge, it's like 40 feet wide

627. and it's about 35 feet long.

628. - And it's a pretty aggressive angle,

629. but we save it for last, we're like,

630. if we bend the car in half, whatever,

631. we have a segment in the can.

632. This was gonna be like a bonus

633. that really made Detroit pop.

634. - You guys are on the highway.

635. So we're gonna put the lounge chairs there.

636. I really love this patio.

637. Did we file a permit for this deck extension?

638. It's horrible.

639. There's some major miscommunication between

640. me, TJ, and Matthew, where,

641. it's just not even usable.

642. - Me and Matt designed the ramp

643. and then we didn't have any experienced ramp builders,

644. construction guys there, like in LA,

645. I have my guys that come in and do it,

646. we draw it out, we give them the schematics.

691. that we could shut down the Bay Bridge.

693. We were like, fuck yeah we wanna do that!

695. So that's when we scripted out the entire opening scene,

696. and how I walk up to the car and everything.

700. we knew that access had to be in there at some point,

701. to represent kind of that history of what we've done.

702. The coolest part of downtown Detroit is the Joe Lewis fist.

703. It's in one of the busiest parts of town,

704. it's a major road, and it's a very cool intersection.

705. It makes actually for a perfect driving situation.

731. So we hop in one of the rental cars,

732. drive onto the freeway, get out,

733. we're inspecting it, looking at it,

734. like in a drizzle.

735. We have this much daylight left,

736. if it dries out, we can still go for it.

737. - It's pouring, so we're just gonna hang out

738. and wait for a minute.

739. - It just keeps raining, and raining, and raining.

740. - But like, even when the rain stops,

741. we have to wait for it to dry.

742. So we're easily 30, 40 minutes out

743. from being able to do anything.

744. - It's a wood ramp, it's soaked through.

745. The concrete to get up to it, it's soaked.

746. You know, it's a 1400 horsepower car,

747. on tires that are made to slide.

748. We just didn't get it.

749. - Ahhh!

750. - This was also the beginning of Ken's frustrations

751. and Brian's frustrations

752. and a little bit of tension between the two.
