1. Hello, and welcome to a Grand Tour special,

2. which comes to you from

3. the emptiest, most sparsely populated country on Earth.

4. Mongolia.

5. Now, ordinarily when we go on these adventures,

6. we have a vague idea about the sort of things that we might be doing.

7. But this time, we don't.

8. No, not a clue.

9. The situation is, we took off from

10. the capital city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar,

11. and flew for two, two-and-a-half hours,

12. over terrain that was much like this.

13. Actually, quite familiar.

14. Unthreatening.

15. But it was completely empty.

16. It was like flying over the whole of the British Isles

17. and not seeing a town, a village, a road,

18. a powerline, a quarry, not even a farm.

19. There wasn't a shred of evidence, from what we saw out of the aeroplane window,

20. that man has ever existed.

21. Yeah, this is what the world would have looked like,

22. pretty much, on about page three of the Book of Genesis, I reckon.

23. And then we were dropped off here...

24. and we don't know why.

25. We don't know anything.

26. An hour or so later, though...

27. That's a chopper.

445. As we trundled along, it soon became obvious

464. Eventually, we started to climb off the valley floor.

471. So we're not talking about a blitz of power, then, from it?

500. and set off to climb the first dune on foot.

522. created in just 20 years the biggest empire the world has ever seen.

530. With Hammond's help, James finally got up the dune.

562. Having crossed the sandy bit,

563. we paused for a moment of celebration.

564. So, there we are. The first successful crossing

565. of the mighty Gobi Desert,

566. or some of it, in that car.

570. - Yes. - That's the river we crossed to get into the Gobi Desert.

571. And we've emerged 300 metres away

572. from the stream where we went into the desert.

573. James, I've got some bad news.

574. We are still south of the Gobi Desert.

576. Rather than try to drive through it again,

577. we decided to bravely drive round it instead.

578. Right, now, let's just gloss over the fact that we made a catastrophic error,

614. But because we'd covered so few miles, we had to plough on.
