The Animals of Farthing Wood 1x6

Directed by Philippe Leclerc

Ron Moody as Badger (voice) / Toad (voice) • Jeremy Barrett as Mole (voice) / Mr. Rabbit (voice) / Mr. Shrew (voice) • Stacey Gregg as Adder (voice) / Kestrel (voice) • Pamela Keevil Kral as Mrs. Squirrel / Mrs. Hedgehog • Rupert Farley as Fox (voice) / Mr. Hare (voice)

After the incident crossing the river, Badger is spotted still alive but caught in some reeds. Toad, Hare and weasel swim over to help Badger get untangled before they all swim back to land. Fox is nowhere to be found so Kestrel files downstream to see if she can find him. She sees him lying on the log heading under a bridge but as the log appears on the other side Fox is no longer there. Badger is assigned as the new leader and to add to matters Toad forgets which way to go. Owl suggests this is because his homing instincts have come into play. Hare and Vole inform Badger that Mrs. Fieldmouse has given birth to her young. Badger suggests that the animals should stop to rest for the time being.

1. Guided by Toad, we animals of Farthing Wood had travelled far

2. on the long journey to the safety of White Deer park.

3. Sworn to protect one another, we had struggled bravely

4. in the face of fire and flood.

5. Then we came to the river.

6. Once Toad has crossed, we'll all go in the water together. Right?

7. Good luck, Toad. - Here we go.

8. Let's go.

9. The rabbits panicked. - Stop it.

10. Stop... - We must save them.

11. Fox and I were swept away.

12. Wait.

13. Look.

14. Is that Badger?

15. It is. Badger.

16. Excuse me, but shouldn't somebody help him?

17. Yes, I'll second that.

18. Come on, what are we waiting for?

19. Pop goes the weasel.

20. Come on, he's caught in the reeds.

21. Is he alive? - Wait for me.

22. Hold on, Badger. Hold on!

23. Oh no, you don't.

24. Do what I do Badger, tread water. See, it's easy.

25. I can't.

26. He's not a toad, stupid.

27. Try, Badger. You can do it.

28. Watch me.

29. It's no good. I'm done for.

30. Save your breath for swimming, if you please.

31. Swim?

32. I couldn't swim now to save my life.

33. That's just what you will have to do, Badger.

34. Badger, come on. - Don't give up.

35. You can do it!

36. Is he free yet?

37. Not quite, keep chewing. - I'll help you, Badger.

38. That woke you up, didn't it?

39. Try again now. - Now, Hedgehog. You push.

40. Don't order me about. - Get on with it.

41. Hooray, he's afloat mateys!

42. Hooray!

43. Oh, dear.

44. Please, don't give up on me now Badger.

45. I know what he needs.

46. Good gracious. - Oh no, Badger.

47. You're going to be alright.

48. Hooray!

49. What are you crying for now? You stupid, undersized seal.

50. What am I crying for? Why, I'm happy of course.

51. Ask a silly question.

52. How's Fox?

53. Who knows. - Drowned I should think.

54. Kestrel's flying downriver to see what she can see

55. but I wouldn't hold out any hopes if I were you.

56. It's all Rabbit's fault.

57. I swallowed so much water.

58. I, I think I...

59. I know what he needs.

60. Serves you right.

61. Well. I'm very sorry for what happened, I'm sure.

62. But we can all panic you know, Hare.

63. Even you.

64. You're not perfect. Although you seem to think so.

65. Oh, do be quiet.

66. Isn't there enough to trouble us without quarreling amongst ourselves?

67. Come and rest, Badger.

68. Kestrel will be back with news of Fox very soon, I'm sure.

69. I hope your right. Thank you.

70. Try and sleep, Badger.

71. If Fox has drowned...

72. Wait till Kestrel comes back, then we'll know.

73. Is he asleep?

74. If he isn't, he's doing a very good impression of it.

75. What are we going to do if Fox really is lost?

76. Elect another leader, of course.

77. Fox never named a successor.

78. Badger will lead us. Who else?

79. I doubt if Badger's up to it after his latest experience.

80. I led the rescue party.

81. No, you didn't. I did.

82. Seems we have several pretenders to the throne, Owl.

83. Pretenders?

84. They may be pretending, I am not.

85. If I am required, I shall be occupied in a little discreet hunting.

86. Goodbye.

87. Come on, Mole.

88. Let's go back to the river bank and cheer ourselves up

89. with a few nice, juicy worms. What do you say?

90. Oh, I don't think I could eat.

91. Go on matey, bet you can.

92. Nice catch, Owl. I like your style.

93. Thank you, Adder.

94. I must say, your own technique is extremely efficient.

95. I get lots of practise.

96. Shame about Fox.

97. Badger as leader...

98. Too slow and stupid.

99. A bird would be a more sensible choice.

100. You mean, Kestrel?

101. Kestrel? Oh, no. She hasn't the common touch.

102. Whereas you have.

103. What are you getting at, Adder?

104. Just raising you, Owl.

105. Well, yes. You're right, of course.

106. All the animals trust you.

107. That's true, too.

108. And you're wise enough to know when someone's winding you up.

109. What? Are you saying...

110. I'm just saying how wise you are.

111. Well, that's filled me up. Now for some fun matey.

112. Why don't you try it?

113. Is it safe?

114. We'll be alright just so long as we stay near the river bank.

115. I wish I could do that.

116. I'll show you how, matey. Watch me.

117. Stop it.

118. You're tickling me.

119. Oh, Toadie. Do stop tickling me.

120. Over here, matey. - Where, Toad?

121. Quick as you can, matey.

122. What was it?

123. Pike, matey.

124. Nasty things, pike. Swallow you whole, that could.

125. Thanks, matey.

126. Don't mind if I snuggle down beside you, do you?

127. Who needs friends?

128. Kestrel, is that you?

129. Did you find Fox?

130. Yes, after a while I saw him clinging to some driftwood.

131. I kept sight of him for a long way.

132. There was a weir but Fox came through it.

133. And then, as the river broadened,

134. he floated on through pleasure boats and steamers until he reached a bridge.

135. What happened? - He floated underneath it.

136. But when the driftwood came out the other side, Fox was no longer on it.

137. Oh, no.

138. But surely, he can't just have disappeared.

139. I waited and waited, I even flew under the bridge and called for him.

140. He wasn't there.

141. We've lost him. Forever.

142. I see. Well, in that case there's no point in waiting here any longer.

143. We must move on. - Move on?

144. But what if Fox came back and we weren't here?

145. If Fox is alive... - Not very likely.

146. He'll find us.

147. Meanwhile, I'm quite sure he would want us to continue on our journey.

148. Yes, you're right I suppose. It's what he'd want.

149. Is everyone ready? - Yes, Badger.

150. Good. Then, let's be on our way.

151. Of course, Badger.

152. Seems we're all going to play at follow my leader, Owl.

153. Only Badger's the one that's leading.

154. Come on, mateys. Grass is nice and springy here, just like I remembered.

155. Sorry I'm so slow.

156. Not at all, Toadie. The hares are just enjoying themselves, that's all.

157. I don't know how they can.

158. Now don't take on, Moley old thing. We don't know Fox is dead.

159. Perhaps even now he's making his way back to us.

160. What, swimming upriver?

161. No harm in hoping, Weasel.

162. If only the rabbits hadn't panicked.

163. That's enough, Mole.

164. It's the rabbits fault.

165. Oh, dear. We're never going to live this down.

166. Now, what's the matter with you?

167. I think I may have stepped on a thorn.

168. My paw will be so swollen up in less than an hour

169. that I won't be able to walk at all.

170. Well, I can't carry you.

171. Oh, dear. I do feel tired.

172. Suppose I bit you, then everyone would be sorry for you.

173. No, thanks. I'm alright, really.

174. Look at the hares enjoying themselves.

175. That isn't a hare, that's Rabbit.

176. Good heavens, so it is.

177. What ever's got into him?

178. Shall I get down, Badger? - No.

179. Cheer up, things aren't so bad. We've come a long way, you know.

180. Yes, a long way from Farthing Wood.

181. And a long way from Fox too.

182. Moley, do bear up.

183. Fox wouldn't want you to be like this, you know.

184. What's happened, Toadie? - I don't know.

185. Halt.

186. Something wrong?

187. No.

188. We're alright so far, it's just...

189. Oh dear. I don't know where to go next.

190. Have we taken a wrong turning?

191. No.

192. I remembered everything. Clear as day, as we came along.

193. Oh, dear. I knew things would go wrong without Fox.

194. Oh, don't worry Moley. I'll get us all there safe and sound.

195. Toad's just a bit confused, that's all.

196. I don't know.

197. I feel sure we should go straight ahead but something keeps pulling me our left.

198. Oh, well. - Alright everyone, moving on.

199. Moving on.

200. It's no good.

201. Halt!

202. It feels all wrong, somehow.

203. I'm just not comfortable, mateys.

204. The guide's lost.

205. Shall we try the other direction?

206. I don't know, matey. If you say so.

207. Moving on.

208. Kestrel, can you scout ahead for us?

209. Willingly.

210. I don't know, oh dear.

211. Done alright so far but I don't know.

212. Don't take on so, Toadie old chap.

213. If you've made a mistake, no one's going to blame you.

214. Missus Vole,

215. I really don't think I can go on.

216. Sing you a song?

217. She says she can't go on.

218. It's terribly inconvenient but I rather think I'm due for a happy event.

219. Stop mumbling dear and do get on.

220. Badger!

221. What is it, Owl?

222. You're going round in a circle.

223. Oh dear, mateys. I'm sorry.

224. You're heading back to the river.

225. Oh dear, what could have happened?

226. Now, let me think.

227. Poor old Toad. You musn't blame yourself.

228. Sorry Owl, forgot you were thinking.

229. Typical. It's very simple, really.

230. Toad's homing instinct has come into play, that's all.

231. My homing instinct?

232. That's correct.

233. Just as it did when you were captured and taken far away.

234. It led you back to your birthplace in Farthing Wood then and it is doing so now.

235. Oh, dear. I am sorry.

236. So what do you suggest we do now, Owl?

237. Retrace our steps, of course.

238. Retrace our steps?

239. I don't think I can.

240. But, how will Toad be able to lead us to White Deer Park?

241. He has his memory, just so long as he ignores his instinct

242. and goes by what he sees and rememberes along the way.

243. Kestrel and I will help.

244. Thank you, Owl. I don't know where we'd be without you.

245. Back in Farthing Wood, I expect. - Seems we've been led astray.

246. What did you see, Kestrel?

247. The other way is scrubland and a few birch trees.

248. That's right, I remember it now. There was a lot of scrubland.

249. Good. Well, shall we move on?

250. Excuse me. - What is it, Hare?

251. There's been a happy event.

252. A happy event?

253. Don't you even know what that means?

254. You lead us around in a circle, wearing us all out...

255. I'll second that.

256. and you don't even know what a happy event is.

257. The field mice have had babies, of course.

258. Babies, how lovely.

259. Delicious, eh Adder?

260. Weasel, the oath!

261. She wouldn't have dared say that if Fox were still here.

262. True.

263. So, what do we do now Badger?

264. Perhaps it's time we all had a rest.

265. It is drawing near nightfall after all.

266. And what are we supposed to use for cover?

267. Oh, we just have to find what cover we can.

268. It's so difficult travelling with babies.

269. I know just what you mean.

270. If only they stopped crying.

271. Wouldn't it be nice if we could find a home here?

272. Instead of going on to White Deer Park.

273. None of this would have happened in Fox's time.

274. It's not Badger's fault, he's doing his best.

275. And how are we supposed to travel with a lot of baby mice?

276. We go slowly enough as it is.

277. I shall advice Bagder to leave the mice behind.

278. Seems a pity. I love little babies.

279. I bet you do.

280. The oath, Adder. The oath.

281. I'm sorry, matey. It's all my fault.

282. Not at all, old thing. - It was your instict.

283. And now babies.

284. If we were at White Deer Park, I'd be pleased.

285. But on the journey.

286. What shall we do?

287. I think the mice might want to stay behind.

288. Well, I'm not going to let them.

289. Look what happened to the newts.

290. And yet, how can we go on with them matey?

291. By holding us up, they'd endanger the rest of us.

292. I wonder what Fox would do.

293. Do you think we'll ever see him again, Badger?

294. He'll make his way back to us if he can, Moley.

295. Meanwhile we'll have to make the best of it.

296. If only I knew what to do.

297. Look, a fox!

298. Hey you, you've got a fox on board.
