The Newts are finding the journey more difficult than the others so when they come across a large lake, they decide to make it their new home. After saying their goodbyes the rest of the animals continue on their journey. After crossing to the other side of the lake Weasel announces that she can smell fire. Soon the other animals spot smoke in the distance, gaining on them. Fox's instincts kick in and he begins to run away from the fire but he has to overcome them when Toad is missing. He has been left behind and its up to Fox to go back and rescue him. Toad is rescued by Fox but Badger discovers that mole is missing. He has been picked up by a fire fighter and placed inside his pocket. Badger heads back and rescues him. It is then that they realise that the Newts have died in the blaze. They are the first of the animals to lose their lives on the journey.

1. Human machines had destroyed our homes and our pond in Farthing Wood.

2. Frightened and thirsty, we were forced to escape.

3. We began a long and dangerous journey to White Deer Park,

4. a nature reserve which only Toad knew.

5. Slaking our thirst at a swimming pool, we journeyed through the night.

6. But as dawn came, a road lay between us and a safe place to rest.

7. It was almost the end for Adder.

8. And Toad, who was exhausted, had to be rescued by Fox, our brave leader.

9. But, at last, everyone reached the safety of some army land

10. where we sank into an exhausted sleep.

11. Do stop snoring, dear.

12. Me? I don't snore.

13. That's what you always say.

14. But I think your snores are positively earth shattering.

15. I'd say it's a pheasant shoot.

16. For once I do believe you're right, dear.

233. It caught the bushes and up they went like bonfire.

235. It was blowing the flames back, the way we'd come.

238. Oh, Badger. Oh, Fox.

239. All my friends, what's happened to you?

247. The fire's spreading 'round the sides of the marsh, we're trapped in the middle.

249. Is there any way our, Kestrel? - There's a causeway,

250. a narrow strip of land just under water

251. running out to a tiny island in the middle of the lake.

252. You'd be safe there.

253. Take me to it. Come on everybody.

254. Here.

255. I think it'll be alright. - I'm too tired for swimming

256. and the water's so deep I'd drown.

257. Yes, so would we. - And us.

258. Climb up my tail.

259. Stop it, one at a time.

260. Well Badger, you've got the right idea.

261. The fire's coming nearer.

262. You'll just have to swim for it, I can't take everyone.

263. Nothing like a crisis for making you pull together, eh?

264. If only Mole could have been here.

265. And the newts.

266. Well, the humans are finally winning. The fire's dying out.

267. At the moment the humans are our friends, but...

268. Wait 'till they see us. - How will we escape?
