1. Captain's log, stardate 45959.1.Copy !req
2. The Enterprise has been recalled
to Sector 001 on a priority mission.Copy !req
3. All we've been told is
that evidence has been discoveredCopy !req
4. indicating the presence
of extraterrestrials on Earth.Copy !req
5. Five centuries ago.Copy !req
6. Work crews were down here
installing seismic regulatorsCopy !req
7. when they found
some remarkable artifacts.Copy !req
8. It's been determined
that they date backCopy !req
9. - to the late 19th century?
- Yes.Copy !req
10. Ah.Copy !req
11. The bifocal visual aid
is typical of the era.Copy !req
12. The weapon is a.45 caliber
double action cavalry pistol,Copy !req
13. - invented by Colt Firearms in 1873.
- Here.Copy !req
14. Look inside the watch.Copy !req
15. Hmm.Copy !req
16. What makes you think
that extraterrestrials were relatedCopy !req
17. to these discoveries?Copy !req
18. The crew was having a problem
with the regulators.Copy !req
19. Something inside the cavern
was interferingCopy !req
20. with the phase conditioners.Copy !req
21. It turned out to be the cavern itself.Copy !req
22. The composition of the rock face
has been alteredCopy !req
23. by exposure to triolic waves.Copy !req
24. Which you're not going to find on Earth
in either the 19th or 24th century.Copy !req
25. Triolic waves?Copy !req
26. The by-product of an energy source
employed by very few speciesCopy !req
27. because of its deleterious effect
on living tissue.Copy !req
28. We've confirmed that no one has been
in or out of this cavern in centuries.Copy !req
29. So, we are left
with a 500-year-old mystery.Copy !req
30. I'm curious, doctor.Copy !req
31. There are far greater experts on Earth
to investigate your mystery.Copy !req
32. Why bring the Enterprise
all the way home?Copy !req
33. As we continued our excavation,Copy !req
34. we found one other thing
I haven't shown you yet.Copy !req
35. We've tried to leave everything
as we found it.Copy !req
36. Space, the final frontier.Copy !req
37. These are the voyages
of the starship Enterprise.Copy !req
38. Its continuing mission:
to explore strange new worlds,Copy !req
39. to seek out new life
and new civilizations,Copy !req
40. to boldly go where no one
has gone before.Copy !req
41. Captain's log, stardate 45960.2.Copy !req
42. We have transported
the materials discoveredCopy !req
43. in the cavern
back to the ship for analysis.Copy !req
44. I wish I could be as dispassionate
about the implicationsCopy !req
45. as my second officer.Copy !req
46. Interesting.Copy !req
47. There is a 12 percent
decomposition of bitaniumCopy !req
48. in the neural pathway links.Copy !req
49. That suggests
that the alloys are vulnerable...Copy !req
50. Data, how can you look inside that,
analyze the decomposition without...Copy !req
51. - Emotion, sir?
- Yes.Copy !req
52. I am simply trying to make
an objective assessment.Copy !req
53. - Data, is this yours?
- I believe so, sir.Copy !req
54. - Could it be Lore?
- No, sir.Copy !req
55. My brother's positronic brain hasCopy !req
56. a type L
phase-discriminating amplifier.Copy !req
57. - Mine is a type R.
- Type R?Copy !req
58. Yes, sir.Copy !req
59. Can you predict how long
this has been in the cavern?Copy !req
60. Decomposition strongly indicatesCopy !req
61. that life was terminated
approximately 500 years ago.Copy !req
62. That would be consistent
with the other artifacts we recovered.Copy !req
63. Your head is not an artifact.Copy !req
64. In relative terms, perhaps not.Copy !req
65. Nevertheless, it seems clear
that my life is to endCopy !req
66. - in the late 19th century.
- Not if we can help it.Copy !req
67. There is no way anyone
can prevent it, sir.Copy !req
68. At some future date,Copy !req
69. I will be transported back
to 19th-century Earth, where I will die.Copy !req
70. It has occurred.Copy !req
71. It will occur.Copy !req
72. Well, I can't tell you exactly
who the aliens were,Copy !req
73. but I have found out a few things.Copy !req
74. The triolicized rock face tells us
that we're probably dealingCopy !req
75. with a species
with microcentrum cell membranes.Copy !req
76. Triolic waves wouldn't harm them.Copy !req
77. It also might mean
they're shape shifters of some kind.Copy !req
78. They could have appeared
on Earth as humans?Copy !req
79. Mm-hm. I don't think it's anybody
we've ever run into before.Copy !req
80. Nothing we've found matches up
with any known life forms.Copy !req
81. What does match upCopy !req
82. is a cellular fossilCopy !req
83. which might have been along
just for the ride.Copy !req
84. Cellular fossil?Copy !req
85. A microscopic ciliated life form.Copy !req
86. Not unlike a thousand
other single-cell life formsCopy !req
87. you'd find on any planet surface,Copy !req
88. except this particular one
is LB-10445.Copy !req
89. And LB-10445 is only known to exist
on one place:Copy !req
90. Devidia ll. The Marrab sector.Copy !req
91. - Number One, lay in a course.
- On my way.Copy !req
92. So, do you want to talk about it?Copy !req
93. Are you referring to the foreknowledge
of my death?Copy !req
94. Yeah.Copy !req
95. I have no particular desire
to discuss the matter.Copy !req
96. - Do you need to talk about it?
- Yeah.Copy !req
97. Ah. Why?Copy !req
98. Data, this has got to bother you
a little.Copy !req
99. On the contrary.
I find it rather comforting.Copy !req
100. Comforting?Copy !req
101. I have often wondered
about my own mortalityCopy !req
102. as I have seen others
around me age.Copy !req
103. Until now it has been
theoretically possibleCopy !req
104. that I would live
an unlimited period of time.Copy !req
105. And although some might find
this attractive,Copy !req
106. to me it only reinforces the fact
that I am...Copy !req
107. artificial.Copy !req
108. I never knew how tough
this must be for you.Copy !req
109. Tough?Copy !req
110. As in, difficult?Copy !req
111. Knowing that you would outlive
all your friends...Copy !req
112. I expected to make new friends.Copy !req
113. True.Copy !req
114. And then to outlive them as well.Copy !req
115. Now that you know
that you might not?Copy !req
116. It provides a sense of completion
to my future.Copy !req
117. In a way, I am not that different
from anyone else.Copy !req
118. I can now look forward to death.Copy !req
119. Never thought of it that way.Copy !req
120. One might also concludeCopy !req
121. that it brings me one step closer
to being human.Copy !req
122. - I am mortal.
- Picard to officers.Copy !req
123. We're approaching
the Devidia system.Copy !req
124. Report to your stations.Copy !req
125. I'll see you later.Copy !req
126. Let's get together for a game of chess
or something, okay?Copy !req
127. That sounded
like a very intense discussion.Copy !req
128. Yeah.Copy !req
129. They found Data's head a mile
beneath San Francisco.Copy !req
130. Been down there
about five centuries.Copy !req
131. That's why the Enterprise has been
sent back to Earth.Copy !req
132. - I didn't realize...
- Something, isn't it?Copy !req
133. He seems fine about it.Copy !req
134. Better than I am.Copy !req
135. Well, I'd better get to Engineering.Copy !req
136. Full circle.Copy !req
137. Hmm.Copy !req
138. - I heard about Data.
- Yeah.Copy !req
139. It's having an unusually
traumatic effect on everyone.Copy !req
140. Yeah.Copy !req
141. If you don't want to talk about it,
it's okay.Copy !req
142. - I'm fine. I'm just...
- Angry.Copy !req
143. I'm not angry.Copy !req
144. Yeah, I'm angry.Copy !req
145. Why should I be angry?Copy !req
146. Maybe because it reminds us
of our own mortality.Copy !req
147. I just don't wanna believe it.Copy !req
148. Have you ever heard Data
define friendship?Copy !req
149. No.Copy !req
150. How did he put it?Copy !req
151. "As I experience certain sensory
input patterns,Copy !req
152. my mental pathways
become accustomed to them.Copy !req
153. The inputs eventually are anticipated
and even missed when absent."Copy !req
154. So, what's the point?Copy !req
155. He's used to us.Copy !req
156. And we're used to him.Copy !req
157. It's like finding out someone you love
has a terminal illness and...Copy !req
158. Data.Copy !req
159. Counselor. Commander.Copy !req
160. Would either of you mind
if I made a personal inquiry?Copy !req
161. Personal inquiry?
No, go right ahead.Copy !req
162. I am perceiving an apparent change
in the way others behave toward me.Copy !req
163. For example, people abruptly end
conversations when I appear,Copy !req
164. just as you did
when the turbolift doors opened.Copy !req
165. Is that an accurate observation?Copy !req
166. - Not at all.
- Yes.Copy !req
167. - Yes.
- You're right, Data,Copy !req
168. and it's not a very nice thing to do.Copy !req
169. It's just that our mental pathways
have become accustomedCopy !req
170. to your sensory input patterns.Copy !req
171. Hmm. I understand.Copy !req
172. I am also fond of you,
commander.Copy !req
173. And you as well, counselor.Copy !req
174. - We're in orbit.
- Any sign of life?Copy !req
175. - Negative, sir.
- Captain.Copy !req
176. Sensors are picking up
an unusual temporal disturbanceCopy !req
177. on a small area
of the planet's surface:Copy !req
178. 42 degrees, seven minutes northCopy !req
179. by 88 degrees, declination east.Copy !req
180. Temporal disturbance?Copy !req
181. Put us in the standard orbit
above those coordinates.Copy !req
182. Spectral analysis shows
a high level of triolic wavesCopy !req
183. emanating from the same location.Copy !req
184. Any correlation with the readings
we received from Earth?Copy !req
185. Affirmative, sir.Copy !req
186. Magnetic signature is identical
to the one found in the cavern.Copy !req
187. Would those triolic waves
be dangerous to humanoids?Copy !req
188. Only with long term exposure, sir.
There is no immediate threat.Copy !req
189. - Take an away team.
- Worf.Copy !req
190. Geordi, Troi, join me
in Transporter Room 3Copy !req
191. for an away team.Copy !req
192. - Commander?
- Mr. Data.Copy !req
193. I need your help to monitor
the sensor readingsCopy !req
194. during this investigation.Copy !req
195. Captain, may I speak to you alone?Copy !req
196. Sir, it is standard procedureCopy !req
197. that the second officer
accompany the away team.Copy !req
198. Yes. Yes, Mr. Data,
I am aware of that.Copy !req
199. Then I must assume your decision
is related to the discovery on Earth of...Copy !req
200. I think it is reasonable
to take precautions.Copy !req
201. Captain, there is
no rational justificationCopy !req
202. - for this course.
- Then I'll be irrational.Copy !req
203. It is possible, sir,Copy !req
204. that the events leading to my death
will not occur for years.Copy !req
205. - Even centuries.
- I hope that's true, Mr. Data.Copy !req
206. Nevertheless, this investigation began
with your death.Copy !req
207. I'm simply trying to see
that it doesn't end that way.Copy !req
208. I appreciate your concern, captain,Copy !req
209. but to employ an aphorism,
one cannot cheat fate.Copy !req
210. Cheat fate?Copy !req
211. Perhaps we can't, Mr. Data,Copy !req
212. but at least we can give it a try.Copy !req
213. Hmm.Copy !req
214. The concentration of triolic waves
falls off about here.Copy !req
215. Mm-hmm.Copy !req
216. It increases exponentially
the closer in we go.Copy !req
217. What's the source?
Is something underground?Copy !req
218. - Negative, commander.
- What's the explanation?Copy !req
219. I don't have one yet.Copy !req
220. - La Forge to Enterprise.
- Go ahead.Copy !req
221. Data, run a spectral field correlation
for me.Copy !req
222. Find out if these triolic readings
are in any way relatedCopy !req
223. - to the temporal distortions.
- Acknowledged.Copy !req
224. Deanna?Copy !req
225. There's life here.Copy !req
226. A child.Copy !req
227. An old woman.Copy !req
228. Dozens more, hundreds.Copy !req
229. Terrified.Copy !req
230. Terrified?Copy !req
231. My God, Will, they're human.Copy !req
232. Whatever they
are, Troi's convinced they're human.Copy !req
233. They may be trapped somehow.Copy !req
234. - We're not sure.
- Captain,Copy !req
235. the results of my temporal analysis
may be pertinent.Copy !req
236. - Go ahead.
- Geordi,Copy !req
237. it indicates a synchronic distortion
in the areas emanating triolic waves.Copy !req
238. That explains a few things.
How much, Data?Copy !req
239. A positive displacement
of 0.004 percent.Copy !req
240. Well, whatever or whoever is there,
we're out of phase with it,Copy !req
241. but we're only talking
by a fraction of a second.Copy !req
242. A fraction of a second
would make them invisible?Copy !req
243. A millisecond, a year,
it wouldn't make any difference.Copy !req
244. If what we're reading is true,Copy !req
245. then we're occupying
the same space,Copy !req
246. - but in a different time.
- How do we compensate?Copy !req
247. Commander, we might be ableCopy !req
248. to manipulate
the synchronic distortion.Copy !req
249. Maybe. If we were able to createCopy !req
250. a contained subspace force field.Copy !req
251. But to get a 0.004 variance,Copy !req
252. we'd need an incredibly
sensitive phase discriminator, Data.Copy !req
253. I don't think we have one
that would even come close.Copy !req
254. Yes, we do.Copy !req
255. It is built
into my positronic decompiler.Copy !req
256. It will be necessary for me
to join the away team, sir.Copy !req
257. Proceed, Mr. Data.Copy !req
258. - Mr. Data?
- Sir.Copy !req
259. Let me give you a hand
with that, Data.Copy !req
260. Once I have adjusted
the force fieldCopy !req
261. I will no longer be visible,
commander.Copy !req
262. I have taken steps, however, to ensure
that you will still be able to hear me,Copy !req
263. if you will assist me in a test
of the com system.Copy !req
264. My voice will be transmitted on a delay
correlated to the phase adjustment.Copy !req
265. That should allow me
to maintain verbal contact.Copy !req
266. - Will we be able to talk to you?
- No, sir.Copy !req
267. That will not be possible.Copy !req
268. The subspace field
has been established.Copy !req
269. You're set to go, Data.Copy !req
270. Adjusting the synchronic distortion.Copy !req
271. 0.001.Copy !req
272. 0.002Copy !req
273. 0.003Copy !req
274. 0.004.Copy !req
275. I have made visual contact.Copy !req
276. There are life forms here.Copy !req
277. They are either unaware of me
or choosing to ignore me.Copy !req
278. I am moving approximately 10 meters
north of my starting positionCopy !req
279. to observe more closely.Copy !req
280. They range from 2 to 3 meters
in height,Copy !req
281. silver gray in color.
They have four limbs.Copy !req
282. No eyes or ears are noticeable.Copy !req
283. There is a single orificeCopy !req
284. where a humanoid forehead
would ordinarily be.Copy !req
285. They are reclined
against the rock faceCopy !req
286. surrounding an apparatus
of some sort,Copy !req
287. approximately 1.5 meters in height.Copy !req
288. It is releasing what appear to be
energy fragmentsCopy !req
289. which are then ingested
by the entities through the orifice,Copy !req
290. perhaps some sort of nourishment.Copy !req
291. The upper portion of the apparatus
seems to be a holding facilityCopy !req
292. for the energy segments.Copy !req
293. There are hundreds,
perhaps thousands,Copy !req
294. of these fragments inside.Copy !req
295. I have resumed a northerly direction.
There is no evidence yet of humans.Copy !req
296. Okay, that's enough, Data.
Come on back now.Copy !req
297. I have encountered another
life form. An Ophidian.Copy !req
298. It seems to be restricted
by a force field.Copy !req
299. Two of the silver-gray entities
are approaching it.Copy !req
300. They have released the force field.Copy !req
301. I am reading a temporal
distortion of massive...Copy !req
302. The Ophidian is cape...Copy !req
303. My space continuum...Copy !req
304. Caught in the after effect.
I am attempting...Copy !req
305. Data.Copy !req
306. - Over here.
- Commander Riker, report.Copy !req
307. We've lost him.Copy !req
308. Excuse me.Copy !req
309. Uh, pardon me.Copy !req
310. I am searching for two individuals
with an Ophidian.Copy !req
311. A snake.Copy !req
312. - Frenchman. Ha-ha-ha!
- Ha-ha-ha!Copy !req
313. Hmm.Copy !req
314. Could you help out a forty-niner?Copy !req
315. I fell down a shaft.
I got blown up in a tunnel.Copy !req
316. - That is unfortunate.
- It is most unfortunate.Copy !req
317. I require large amounts of whiskey,
as a liniment.Copy !req
318. I am sorry, but I have no whiskey
to give you.Copy !req
319. I'll take a dime.Copy !req
320. I am sorry,
but I have no form of legal tender.Copy !req
321. Oh. We're in the same boat, huh?Copy !req
322. Well, this is my street.Copy !req
323. You'll have to go find one
of your own.Copy !req
324. I would be happy to do so,Copy !req
325. but I am presently
in search of information.Copy !req
326. Oh. Stockbrokers are cheap as hell.Copy !req
327. Don't even bother to ask.Copy !req
328. Your best handout is
some young fella with his lady.Copy !req
329. You give him a chance to show her
he's generous.Copy !req
330. Steer clear of sailors.Copy !req
331. Most likely, you'll get a fist
across your jaw for your trouble.Copy !req
332. Thank you for your advice,Copy !req
333. but I am trying to find
two individuals with a snake.Copy !req
334. - A snake?
- Mm.Copy !req
335. You're an odd fella, aren't you?Copy !req
336. But just don't be too particular
where you get your funds from.Copy !req
337. You are in need of medical attention.
I will get a doctor.Copy !req
338. No, no, no, it's too late for that.Copy !req
339. Oh. Could you help out a forty-niner?Copy !req
340. Thanks.Copy !req
341. Hey, put it on Gentleman Jim.
Knockout in the fifth.Copy !req
342. All right.Copy !req
343. Sir, I need temporary lodging.Copy !req
344. Heh. Looks like the missus booted
you out in the middle of the night.Copy !req
345. Ah. I understand the source
of your misperception.Copy !req
346. However, this is not sleepwear.
And I do not have a missus.Copy !req
347. Well... Heh-heh.Copy !req
348. - I am a Frenchman.
- Oh.Copy !req
349. Well, everybody's from somewhere.
Now that doesn't matter at this hotel.Copy !req
350. It's six bits a day
or four dollars a week.Copy !req
351. - I have no money.
- Well, now, that matters.Copy !req
352. But I am capable of performing
significant tasks,Copy !req
353. both mental and physical.Copy !req
354. Perhaps your hotel
would offer me a job.Copy !req
355. Jeez, I don't know.Copy !req
356. We're pretty happy
with the maid we've got.Copy !req
357. The cook's decent,
the dishwasher's drunk all day,Copy !req
358. but at least he gets here on time.Copy !req
359. And, uh, there's me.Copy !req
360. I do everything else around here.Copy !req
361. Sorry.Copy !req
362. Lady Luck not with you tonight,
Mr. Lane?Copy !req
363. Poor fella.Copy !req
364. Hasn't filled a straight
in five weeks.Copy !req
365. Poker?Copy !req
366. Fold.Copy !req
367. Me too.Copy !req
368. - Go to blazes.
Heh-heh-heh.Copy !req
369. A poker face carved in marble.Copy !req
370. Heh-heh-heh.
- Excuse me, gentlemen.Copy !req
371. - What in the hell do you want?
- I would like to join the game.Copy !req
372. Pale face.Copy !req
373. I don't like Easterners, personally.Copy !req
374. - I am a Frenchman.
- Ah.Copy !req
375. Please, sir.Copy !req
376. The game is poker.
The deal is yours.Copy !req
377. The ante is four bits.Copy !req
378. Family heirloom?Copy !req
379. In a manner of speaking.Copy !req
380. It is a crystalline composite
of silicon, beryllium,Copy !req
381. - carbon 70, and...
- Gold.Copy !req
382. Gold.Copy !req
383. I'll give you three dollars for it.Copy !req
384. I accept.Copy !req
385. Did you see the looks on their faces?
I did everything I could not to laugh.Copy !req
386. To whom are you referring?Copy !req
387. Frederick La Rouque
and Joe Falling Hawk.Copy !req
388. Those guys are card sharks.Copy !req
389. Sure, they play easy at first,
not to scare off the marks,Copy !req
390. but you give them a little time,
they'll bleed a man dry.Copy !req
391. Especially a out-of-towner
like yourself.Copy !req
392. What was the source
of your jocular reaction?Copy !req
393. - What was it you found humorous?
- Oh.Copy !req
394. Don't you see?
They had you pegged for a sap.Copy !req
395. The clothes you got on,
the way you talk.Copy !req
396. It's like you were born yesterday.Copy !req
397. - You sure fooled them though.
- It was not my intention to deceive.Copy !req
398. Well, have it your way.
This is the place.Copy !req
399. Breakfast's at 6 to 8.Copy !req
400. Checkout's at noon,
when you're ready to leave.Copy !req
401. Thank you.Copy !req
402. It has been a pleasure.Copy !req
403. It would be advisable
to monitor that cough.Copy !req
404. I have read that there is currently
a cholera epidemic in San Francisco.Copy !req
405. Never felt better.Copy !req
406. Of course. The gratuity.Copy !req
407. - Thank you for your assistance.
- A dollar?Copy !req
408. If there's anything you need...Copy !req
409. It can get lonely in San Francisco.Copy !req
410. You might want some company.
I can introduce you to, uh, Lillian.Copy !req
411. I have no need for companionship.Copy !req
412. However, I do require
some supplies.Copy !req
413. Anything you need,
I can get it for you wholesale.Copy !req
414. I can get it for you less
than wholesale,Copy !req
415. if, uh, you don't ask me
where it came from.Copy !req
416. Well, what do you need
all this stuff for?Copy !req
417. - I am an inventor.
- No kidding?Copy !req
418. Well, this stuff's gonna take a while,
I'll have to go clear across town.Copy !req
419. And it's not gonna be cheap.Copy !req
420. Will this be enough?Copy !req
421. More than enough.Copy !req
422. You may retain the surplus
for yourself.Copy !req
423. - Keep the change?
- Exactly.Copy !req
424. Done.Copy !req
425. Help out a forty-niner.Copy !req
426. Fell down a shaft.Copy !req
427. Forty-niner.Copy !req
428. Help me.Copy !req
429. Help me out.Copy !req
430. No.Copy !req
431. No.Copy !req
432. Captain's log, supplemental.Copy !req
433. Close-range sensor analysis
has yieldedCopy !req
434. no further trace
of Commander Data.Copy !req
435. Despite the emotional repercussions
among my crewCopy !req
436. I must move this mission forward.Copy !req
437. I'm not willing to accept that he's dead
and just leave it at that.Copy !req
438. We cannot make
Mr. Data our priority.Copy !req
439. What is more important than Data?Copy !req
440. Look at what we have so far.Copy !req
441. Evidence that these aliens
have been traveling in time to Earth.Copy !req
442. What if they're trying to undermine
our history for some reason?Copy !req
443. Some kind of guerilla war?Copy !req
444. We must assume
that there is a threat.Copy !req
445. If not to us,
then to 19th-century Earth.Copy !req
446. We have to determine
what that threat may be.Copy !req
447. Mr. La Forge,
we have to find some wayCopy !req
448. to communicate
with these life forms.Copy !req
449. It's not going to be easy to reproduce
what Data did.Copy !req
450. We can create a contained
subspace fieldCopy !req
451. but we'd need an extraordinarily
sensitive phase discriminatorCopy !req
452. - to get that 0.004 variance.
- Can you build one?Copy !req
453. It won't be as good as Data's.Copy !req
454. - Will it be good enough?
- I don't know, I can try.Copy !req
455. It's gonna take some time though.Copy !req
456. I don't want anyone else
going in alone.Copy !req
457. I can probably create
a large enough subspace fieldCopy !req
458. to encompass everyone,
but adjusting the phase inside the field,Copy !req
459. that's gonna be the hard part.Copy !req
460. Make it so.Copy !req
461. We have to assume one thing, sir.Copy !req
462. Wherever Data may be,
he's doing the same thing we are,Copy !req
463. which is trying to get
to the bottom of this.Copy !req
464. He may have a better idea
about what's going onCopy !req
465. so it might be in the best interest
of this mission to find him.Copy !req
466. Perhaps in the course
of this investigation, we will.Copy !req
467. I hope so.Copy !req
468. If we find Commander Data,Copy !req
469. it may be our fate to die
with him in the past.Copy !req
470. If our remains are in that cavern,Copy !req
471. they would have turned
to dust long ago.Copy !req
472. I'm afraid to interrupt.Copy !req
473. Captain.Copy !req
474. You didn't have to come
all the way down here.Copy !req
475. I would have been more than happy
to have come up to you.Copy !req
476. And miss all this?Copy !req
477. I haven't seen
such a complex operationCopy !req
478. since the Academy lab final
in exochemistry.Copy !req
479. It's a Tzartak aperitif.Copy !req
480. It's very, very touchy.Copy !req
481. The trick is to change
the evaporation pointCopy !req
482. of the main ingredient.Copy !req
483. You want the temperature
where the liquid goes to vaporCopy !req
484. to be a half a degree below
the body temperature of the customer.Copy !req
485. That way,Copy !req
486. when the liquid touches the tongue,Copy !req
487. it evaporates and the flavor is carried
entirely by the vapor.Copy !req
488. A few molecules off,Copy !req
489. the vapor point crashes and, poof,Copy !req
490. it's all gone. All of it.Copy !req
491. What is it you wanted
to see me about?Copy !req
492. I hear you're sending an away team
down to the surface.Copy !req
493. - Uh-huh.
- Are you going?Copy !req
494. Well, now, this is rather unusualCopy !req
495. for you to be curious
about an away mission.Copy !req
496. Maybe it's an unusual away mission.Copy !req
497. If you have something to say,
I'm listening.Copy !req
498. Starfleet captains don't usually
accompany away teams.Copy !req
499. It's general policy.Copy !req
500. This time you have to.Copy !req
501. Why?Copy !req
502. You just do.Copy !req
503. Do you remember
the first time we met?Copy !req
504. Of course.Copy !req
505. Don't be so sure.Copy !req
506. I just mean,Copy !req
507. if you don't go on this mission...Copy !req
508. we'll never meet.Copy !req
509. - Sorry it took so long, Mr. Data.
- Apology is not necessary.Copy !req
510. Whoa. Hey.Copy !req
511. - Ow.
- Are you all right?Copy !req
512. - I believe I have over-exerted myself.
- Yeah, I'll say.Copy !req
513. - Did you get it working?
- Yes.Copy !req
514. - Whatever it is...
- This is for your trouble.Copy !req
515. What are you going to do
with the anvil?Copy !req
516. I require a low intensity
magnetic field core.Copy !req
517. I believe the iron mass
of the anvil will provide that.Copy !req
518. Well, uh, what's it gonna be
when it's finished?Copy !req
519. What do you think it is gonna be?Copy !req
520. If I were to guess,
maybe a new kind of motorCopy !req
521. for one of those horseless carriages.Copy !req
522. - That is a good guess.
- Hot damn.Copy !req
523. You really think
there's money in those things?Copy !req
524. - Perhaps.
- Ha!Copy !req
525. Isn't that what makes
America great?Copy !req
526. To what are you referring?Copy !req
527. Well, a man rides into town
in his pajamas,Copy !req
528. wins a grubstake at a poker table,Copy !req
529. turns it into a horseless carriage
and makes a million bucks.Copy !req
530. That's America.Copy !req
531. I believe I have given you
an erroneous impression.Copy !req
532. You know, someday,
my ship's gonna come in.Copy !req
533. - You have a ship?
- Oh, yeah.Copy !req
534. And it's full of gold too.Copy !req
535. I'm just biding my time
till it gets here.Copy !req
536. Raising a stake any way I can.Copy !req
537. I've been a newsie,
cut fish at a cannery,Copy !req
538. heck, I've even been
an oyster pirate.Copy !req
539. You have had a considerable
spectrum of occupations.Copy !req
540. Yeah, well, you can't stay
in one place too long.Copy !req
541. I'm always looking for the angle,
you know?Copy !req
542. Say, maybe you and I could go
into business together.Copy !req
543. Selling your horseless carriage and all.
You invent them, I sell them.Copy !req
544. I can sell anybody anything.Copy !req
545. What do you say?Copy !req
546. I believe your plan is
a bit premature.Copy !req
547. Ah.Copy !req
548. Well, keep it in mind though.Copy !req
549. I'd better get back.Copy !req
550. Oh, I forgot.Copy !req
551. I got you something
at the bakery on Third.Copy !req
552. - Oh. Thank you, Jack.
- Oh, no. It's on me, partner.Copy !req
553. The eminent scientist,
Alfred Russell Wallace,Copy !req
554. has revived the theory
that Earth is at the centerCopy !req
555. of the stellar universe.Copy !req
556. This, uh, distinguished,Copy !req
557. natural...Copy !req
558. philosopher has reaffirmed
our planetCopy !req
559. as the only habitable globe
in the heavens.Copy !req
560. A world, furthermore, constructedCopy !req
561. for the sole benefit of man.Copy !req
562. He's got a lot of folks excited
about the notion.Copy !req
563. My dear Mr. Clemens,
why do I think you're not one of them?Copy !req
564. Heh-heh. Your suspicions,
Madam Guinan, are undoubtedly basedCopy !req
565. upon your keen observational skills.
Heh-heh.Copy !req
566. Now, if you'll permit me,Copy !req
567. I'll continue
my character assassination.Copy !req
568. Unimpeded.Copy !req
569. My dear Mr. Clemens,
please do, please do.Copy !req
570. According to our best
geologic estimate,Copy !req
571. the Earth is approximately
one hundred million years of age.Copy !req
572. Perhaps it is less, perhaps more.Copy !req
573. Perhaps a great deal more.Copy !req
574. Indeed. But regardless,
it is ancient in the extreme.Copy !req
575. Now, geology also tells us
that man himself has existedCopy !req
576. but for a microscopic fraction
of those years.Copy !req
577. Curious, isn't it?Copy !req
578. That the world got by
for such a great long whileCopy !req
579. with no humans around
to fill up space.Copy !req
580. I suppose Mr. Wallace
and his supporters would sayCopy !req
581. that the Earth needed
all that timeCopy !req
582. to prepare itself
for our illustrious arrival.Copy !req
583. Why the oyster aloneCopy !req
584. probably required 15 million yearsCopy !req
585. to get it to come out just right. Heh.Copy !req
586. Well, if the Earth is not aloneCopy !req
587. and there are millions
of inhabited planets in the heavens...Copy !req
588. Quite my point.Copy !req
589. Man becomes a trivial creation,
does he not?Copy !req
590. Lost in the vastness
of the cosmic prairie,Copy !req
591. a drift on the deep ocean of time.Copy !req
592. A single one amongst, heh...Copy !req
593. countless others.Copy !req
594. Some may argue,Copy !req
595. that a diamond is still a diamond,Copy !req
596. even if it is one amongst millions.
It still shines as brightly.Copy !req
597. Someone might say that,
dear lady,Copy !req
598. if someone thought
that the human race was akinCopy !req
599. to a precious jewel.Copy !req
600. But this, uh...Copy !req
601. increasingly hypothetical someone
would not be me.Copy !req
602. - Good afternoon, sir.
- Good afternoon.Copy !req
603. - I would like to speak to Guinan.
- And you are?Copy !req
604. Data.Copy !req
605. Mr. Data.Copy !req
606. Could it be under another name?Copy !req
607. No.Copy !req
608. I can't seem to find your name
on the guest list, sir.Copy !req
609. I am a personal friend.Copy !req
610. Madam Guinan has discovered
many personal friendsCopy !req
611. since the newspaper announcement,Copy !req
612. but if your name is not
on the guest list,Copy !req
613. - there's nothing I can do.
- It is urgent that I speak to her.Copy !req
614. Sir, unless you leave
this house immediately,Copy !req
615. I will send for the police.Copy !req
616. That is an excellent idea.
I will wait for them in there.Copy !req
617. Sir, please, you can't go in there.Copy !req
618. Guinan.Copy !req
619. Excuse me.Copy !req
620. I must speak to you immediately.Copy !req
621. Forgive me, madam,
he just barged right in.Copy !req
622. I am sorry for the disruption,Copy !req
623. but he would not believe me
when I told him we were friends.Copy !req
624. Do I know you, mister...Copy !req
625. Data.Copy !req
626. Yes. We were on a ship together.Copy !req
627. Well, I do so much traveling.
What ship would that be?Copy !req
628. - The Enterprise.
- Is that a clipper ship?Copy !req
629. - It is a starship.
- Starship?Copy !req
630. - What registry would that be?
- Of course.Copy !req
631. Mr. Dat... Oh, heh-heh.Copy !req
632. Excuse us. We have so much
to catch up on.Copy !req
633. Excuse us, just... How are you?Copy !req
634. What exactly are you?Copy !req
635. Android. Artificial life form.Copy !req
636. Ah.Copy !req
637. Did my father send you here?
Because if he did, you must go backCopy !req
638. - and tell him I'm not done listening to...
- I was not sent by your father.Copy !req
639. Circumstances demand
that I take you into my confidence.Copy !req
640. I require your assistance.Copy !req
641. - Sorry.
- I am from the 24th century,Copy !req
642. where you and I serve
aboard a starship.Copy !req
643. And?Copy !req
644. Our ship encountered a speciesCopy !req
645. who appears to be threatening
19th-century Earth.Copy !req
646. I investigated and was inadvertently
pulled into their temporal vortex.Copy !req
647. Ah.Copy !req
648. When I saw your photograph
in the newspaper,Copy !req
649. I assumed you had joined me
from the future.Copy !req
650. From the Enterprise.
I knew your species was long-lived,Copy !req
651. but I did not realize
you had visited Earth so long ago.Copy !req
652. Eavesdropping is by no means
a proper activity for a gentleman.Copy !req
653. Nonetheless,Copy !req
654. the deed is done.Copy !req
655. Captain's log, stardate 45965.3.Copy !req
656. An away team has beamed
to the surface with a deviceCopy !req
657. which may enable them
to phase shift into the alien world.Copy !req
658. Okay, counselor, right over there.Copy !req
659. The triolic waves end right here.Copy !req
660. Mr. Worf.Copy !req
661. - Sir?
- How soon will you be ready?Copy !req
662. We're ready now, captain.Copy !req
663. The subspace field is established.Copy !req
664. I'd be more comfortable
if you'd monitor our progressCopy !req
665. - from the Bridge, captain.
- I've reason to believeCopy !req
666. that my presence on this mission
is imperative.Copy !req
667. - Imperative?
- Yes.Copy !req
668. Mr. Worf, you will report back
to the Bridge.Copy !req
669. Sir, as chief of security,
my place is at your side.Copy !req
670. The security of the Enterprise is
of paramount importance, Mr. Worf.Copy !req
671. Yes, sir.Copy !req
672. - Worf to Enterprise.
- Go ahead, sir.Copy !req
673. Beam me up.Copy !req
674. Proceed, Mr. La Forge.Copy !req
675. I've modified this tricorder to interface
with the subspace generator.Copy !req
676. It should allow me to control
the phase discrimination,Copy !req
677. assuming this is gonna work at all.Copy !req
678. I'll need everyone inside the field.Copy !req
679. Adjusting synchronic distortion.Copy !req
680. 0.001.Copy !req
681. 0.002.Copy !req
682. 0.003.Copy !req
683. 0.004.Copy !req
684. If we can see them,
why can't they see us?Copy !req
685. The phase displacement might not
bring us far enoughCopy !req
686. into their perceptual range.Copy !req
687. These strands appear to be
biomagnetic.Copy !req
688. Variable flux,
possibly organic in origin.Copy !req
689. A life form?Copy !req
690. No.Copy !req
691. There's no life here.Copy !req
692. What I have sensed is
more like an imprint.Copy !req
693. An echo of the last moment of life.Copy !req
694. Human life.Copy !req
695. They all died in terror.Copy !req
696. Oh, my God.Copy !req
697. They're delivering more of them
for the others to ingest.Copy !req
698. Look at what he's carrying.Copy !req
