1. Look, save your energy.Copy !req
2. We'll have you out of there
as soon as possible.Copy !req
3. I hope.Copy !req
4. Try rerouting the power coupling.Copy !req
5. Mr O'Brien.Copy !req
6. See if you can activate
the interlock servos.Copy !req
7. Mr O'Brien.Copy !req
8. Captain Jaheel,
those people have been stuckCopy !req
9. in that airlock for over an hour.Copy !req
10. if you wait till we get that door opened,
I'll listen to your problems.Copy !req
11. I've waited two daysCopy !req
12. for you to readjust my ship's
antimatter flow converter.Copy !req
13. I'm afraid we're behind
in our maintenance schedule.Copy !req
14. I'm not interested in excuses.Copy !req
15. I must deliver Tamen Sahsheer
to Largo VCopy !req
16. and I'll need to hurry
before it spoils.Copy !req
17. I'll try to get a repair crew to you today.Copy !req
18. - That's the best I can do.
- Your best hardly seems good enough.Copy !req
19. - Dax to O'Brien.
- O'Brien here.Copy !req
20. Can you spare a minute?
I have a little problem here at the lab.Copy !req
21. On my way.Copy !req
22. Thanks for coming, Chief.Copy !req
23. What are you doing out here?Copy !req
24. - Have you checked the EPS converter?
- Yes, first thing.Copy !req
25. - How about the intensity grid?
- It's fine.Copy !req
26. Then it's probably
a secondary phase modulator.Copy !req
27. We had trouble with them last week
in the main power core.Copy !req
28. That should do it.Copy !req
29. Anything else I can do for you?Copy !req
30. The navigational computer
hasn't worked reliably for three days.Copy !req
31. I ask for the star charts
for the Argosian sector,Copy !req
32. Glessene sector comes up instead.Copy !req
33. That's when I can coax this system on line.Copy !req
34. Uh-huh. Try it now.Copy !req
35. Huh. That's more like it.Copy !req
36. - You could use some sleep.
- Who has time for sleep?Copy !req
37. I'd settle for five minutes'
peace and quiet.Copy !req
38. Chief, I thought
you were going to fix the replicators.Copy !req
39. You're absolutely right, sir.
I knew I'd forgotten something.Copy !req
40. Can't have the Operations Chief
sitting around daydreamingCopy !req
41. when there's work to be done, can we?
I'll get right on it.Copy !req
42. "Fix the replicators, Chief."Copy !req
43. "My console's off line, Chief."Copy !req
44. I should have transferred
to a cargo drone -Copy !req
45. no people, no complaints.Copy !req
46. Hot coffee - black, double sweet.Copy !req
47. Tell me, Quark.Copy !req
48. Am I mistaken,
or is business a little slow today?Copy !req
49. Slow? It's been almost non-existentCopy !req
50. for the past three days.Copy !req
51. Who knows?Copy !req
52. if things don't improve,
you may be forced to close down.Copy !req
53. You'd like that, wouldn't you?Copy !req
54. Let's just say, without you around,Copy !req
55. my job would be considerably easier.Copy !req
56. Without me around,Copy !req
57. you'd be forced to find
some other poor innocent to persecute.Copy !req
58. Think about that while you sit here
gloating at my misfortune.Copy !req
59. Quark! You call this Kohlanese stew?Copy !req
60. if your meal isn't satisfactoryCopy !req
61. I'm sure we could er... exchange it
for something more to your liking.Copy !req
62. Aren't you the least bit curiousCopy !req
63. as to how it tastes?Copy !req
64. Now...Copy !req
65. you served it, you're going to eat it.Copy !req
66. - All right, that's enough.
- I said, eat it!Copy !req
67. I said...Copy !req
68. that's enough.Copy !req
69. Leave him alone.Copy !req
70. - Another satisfied customer.
- It's these replicators.Copy !req
71. if I don't get them fixed soon,
they'll destroy my business.Copy !req
72. Why not get O'Brien to fix them?Copy !req
73. He has the replicators
on the command level working perfectly.Copy !req
74. I'm on his waiting list.Copy !req
75. He says he'll get to them
as soon as he can.Copy !req
76. No telling when that will be.Copy !req
77. The Chief's a very busy man.Copy !req
78. Computer...Copy !req
79. display a station layout.Copy !req
80. Highlight locations
of all repaired replicatorsCopy !req
81. on command level.Copy !req
82. lnformation restricted
to security clearance five and above.Copy !req
83. Please enter security verification.Copy !req
84. Clearance verified.Copy !req
85. There you go, sir.
I think you'll find that more to your liking.Copy !req
86. - Very much appreciated.
- Don't mention it, sir.Copy !req
87. Unfortunately, there are plenty
of replicators that still need looking after.Copy !req
88. - You all right, Chief?
- I'm just a bit hot.Copy !req
89. The environmental controls
must be acting up again.Copy !req
90. Send my regards to Mrs O'Brien.
Jake says she's a great teacher.Copy !req
91. That's nice to hear.
She's flower units about the lad herself.Copy !req
92. - Excuse me?
- Sir?Copy !req
93. What was that you just said?Copy !req
94. She's... quite fond of the lad herself.Copy !req
95. - I'm glad to hear it.
- Very good, sir.Copy !req
96. Ladies.Copy !req
97. Hello, Lieutenant.Copy !req
98. I forgot how different it was.Copy !req
99. - How different what was?
- Being female.Copy !req
100. I haven't been one for over 80 years.
All this attention.Copy !req
101. - It must take some getting used to.
- I find it quite enjoyable.Copy !req
102. Major Kira.
Lieutenant Dax.Copy !req
103. I'd be honoured to have you
join my little party.Copy !req
104. - As my guests, of course.
- What's all this, Quark?Copy !req
105. You cheat your 1,000th customer?Copy !req
106. Who says Bajorans
don't have a sense of humour?Copy !req
107. Actually, we're celebrating the repair
of the bar's replicator system.Copy !req
108. Perhaps I could interest youCopy !req
109. in a nice, double-whipped,
ldanian spice pudding.Copy !req
110. What do you think?Copy !req
111. I think I'm due back at Ops, but go on.
Enjoy yourself.Copy !req
112. - Chief?
- How can I help you, Major?Copy !req
113. Looks like you're the one
who could use a little help.Copy !req
114. No, I'm fine, really.Copy !req
115. I suppose this isn't
a good time to tell youCopy !req
116. that number three turbolift
has broken down again.Copy !req
117. Joking, Chief.Copy !req
118. Major, lark's true pepper.Copy !req
119. What?Copy !req
120. Let birds go further loose maybe.Copy !req
121. Shout easy play.Copy !req
122. Chief, you're not making any sense.Copy !req
123. Round the turbulent quick.Copy !req
124. Well, close the reverse harbour.Copy !req
125. Ankle try sound.Copy !req
126. Reset gleaming.Copy !req
127. Dinner to bug.Copy !req
128. Chief, wait.Copy !req
129. - When?
- Chief!Copy !req
130. Computer, continue neural imaging scanCopy !req
131. and stimulate visual cortex.Copy !req
132. All visual responses normal.Copy !req
133. - Begin auditory stimuli.
- No physiological damage.Copy !req
134. All brain functions
within normal parameters.Copy !req
135. - Nurse.
- Yes?Copy !req
136. Will you pull up Mr O'Brien's
neurophysiological history, please?Copy !req
137. Yes, Doctor.Copy !req
138. - What has he written?
- I wish I knew.Copy !req
139. Strike limits.
Flame the dark true salt.Copy !req
140. - Chief, take a seat.
- Way link complete.Copy !req
141. Way link!Copy !req
142. - What's wrong with him?
- He's suffering from a form of aphasia.Copy !req
143. It's a perceptual dysfunctionCopy !req
144. in which aural and visual stimuli
are incorrectly processed by the brain.Copy !req
145. His thinking hasn't been affectedCopy !req
146. but he's incapable of expressing himself
or understanding others.Copy !req
147. Victory strike limits frosted wake.Copy !req
148. Simple hesitation!Copy !req
149. I'm not sure I follow you.Copy !req
150. You say Mr O'Brien is aphasiac
but his tests have come up negative.Copy !req
151. isn't aphasia typically associated
with some kind of cranial trauma?Copy !req
152. It can occur as a result
of a blow to the headCopy !req
153. but there's no evidence of that.Copy !req
154. Did you check the library
for precedents?Copy !req
155. And rechecked. Nothing, so far.Copy !req
156. You have any theories?Copy !req
157. - Not yet.
- Find one.Copy !req
158. Major Kira, get ahold of
the Chief's personal duty log.Copy !req
159. Find out where he's been
for the past 52 hours.Copy !req
160. I've already examined it.
He's been all over the station.Copy !req
161. Retrace his steps
and see what you come up with.Copy !req
162. Dax, you will temporarily assume
Mr O'Brien's duties.Copy !req
163. Yes...Copy !req
164. ls there a problem, Lieutenant?Copy !req
165. Lieutenant?Copy !req
166. I'm sorry, Benjamin.Copy !req
167. I'm unable to...Copy !req
168. foolish assembled regal...Copy !req
169. controlled weather.Copy !req
170. Spontaneous development of aphasia
is virtually impossible.Copy !req
171. Yet we saw Lieutenant Dax
become aphasiac before our eyes.Copy !req
172. We are dealing with a disease
which only mimics aphasia.Copy !req
173. I ran a full neural synaptic comparison
between Dax and O'BrienCopy !req
174. and I found this
in the temporal lobes of both patients.Copy !req
175. A virus.Copy !req
176. It imposes itself within
the established synaptic pathwaysCopy !req
177. and then reroutes them.
For example, when I look at this,Copy !req
178. a process occurs within my brainCopy !req
179. which connects the stimulus
to the word "tricorder".Copy !req
180. - This virus disrupts that process.
- I'd see a tricorderCopy !req
181. but I'd say something ridiculous,
like "window".Copy !req
182. Exactly.Copy !req
183. - Doctor, you should get over here.
- Night the flow trade again.Copy !req
184. You lost pile luck.
Away tunnel back the garden.Copy !req
185. I want this station put under
emergency quarantine immediately.Copy !req
186. Dabo!Copy !req
187. - Quark, what is going on here?
- What does it look like?Copy !req
188. It looks like business as usual
but that's impossibleCopy !req
189. because all shops and businesses
have been closed until further notice.Copy !req
190. Except for essential station operations.Copy !req
191. - For which this place hardly qualifies.
- I don't think they'd agree.Copy !req
192. This quarantine
has everybody on edge, Constable.Copy !req
193. Would you deprive them
of a little harmless diversion?Copy !req
194. They'd be safer in their quarters.Copy !req
195. Quark, this Kohlanese stew - magnificent.Copy !req
196. Fortunately, my assistant, Rom,
was able to fix the replicators.Copy !req
197. Yes...Copy !req
198. Very fortunate.Copy !req
199. Jake, I expected you home an hour ago.Copy !req
200. Sorry. I was at Nog's.
Dad, about this quarantine.Copy !req
201. - It's going to be OK, isn't it?
- It's just a precaution.Copy !req
202. I wish I shared your confidence.Copy !req
203. Go straight home, son.
I'll see you at dinner.Copy !req
204. Captain Jaheel, all visitors
have been confined to their ships.Copy !req
205. - There is no place I'd rather be.
- Why are you here?Copy !req
206. I request permission
to leave this station.Copy !req
207. Request denied.Copy !req
208. We have not been affected
by this virus.Copy !req
209. Unless I depart at once
my whole cargo will be ruined.Copy !req
210. Captain,
I suggest you return to your ship now.Copy !req
211. Please. I don't want to get sick.Copy !req
212. I'm sorry, but until we can
find a cure for this thingCopy !req
213. no one's going anywhere.Copy !req
214. Computer, let's start with
one Ferengi starduster, please.Copy !req
215. Extra strong.Copy !req
216. Perfect.Copy !req
217. I thought the front wheels
were sticking a bit.Copy !req
218. Unauthorised access to crew quarters
is a crime, Quark.Copy !req
219. You could have just asked
to use the replicators.Copy !req
220. There's an old Ferengi saying -Copy !req
221. "Never ask when you can take."
How did you figure it out?Copy !req
222. - You claimed Rom fixed your replicators.
- So?Copy !req
223. Rom's an idiot.
He couldn't fix a straw if it was bent.Copy !req
224. You're right. Rom is an idiot.Copy !req
225. Remind me to get rid of him tomorrow.Copy !req
226. The levels of the virus
in the patients' bloodCopy !req
227. suggest it's due to ingestion.Copy !req
228. - Is it in our food?
- All our food is replicatedCopy !req
229. and all the replicators use biofilters.Copy !req
230. They screen out contaminants
including viruses.Copy !req
231. I've analysed samples
from replicators all over the station.Copy !req
232. Food on the command level
is contaminated.Copy !req
233. All of us have eaten
from those replicators.Copy !req
234. This virus is highly adaptable.Copy !req
235. lts incubation period seems to vary
within each individual.Copy !req
236. According to O'Brien's duty logCopy !req
237. the last thing he did
was fix the command level replicators.Copy !req
238. Get a repair crew over there
to inspect the site.Copy !req
239. Let's shut down those replicators.Copy !req
240. Maybe we can limit
further contamination.Copy !req
241. I've got aphasiac patients
from all over the station.Copy !req
242. - How is that possible?
- Thank Quark.Copy !req
243. I caught him using a replicator
in vacant crew quarters.Copy !req
244. He is producing his entire menu
out of there.Copy !req
245. if this virus is presentCopy !req
246. within a large enough segment
of the population,Copy !req
247. it could mean...Copy !req
248. What is it, Doctor?Copy !req
249. I just took an air sample.Copy !req
250. The virus.Copy !req
251. - It's mutated into an airborne variety.
- Which means...?Copy !req
252. Which means the whole station is infected.Copy !req
253. Station Log, Stardate 46423.7.Copy !req
254. Nearly 60% of DS9's populationCopy !req
255. has now contracted the aphasia virus.Copy !req
256. We've initiated
standard quarantine proceduresCopy !req
257. and advise incoming shipsCopy !req
258. to maintain their distance
until further notice.Copy !req
259. I found it
in the replicator's pattern generator.Copy !req
260. O'Brien must have triggered it
when he repaired the system.Copy !req
261. According to Bashir, it introduced
an anomalous programming sequenceCopy !req
262. into the materialization subroutine.Copy !req
263. It built the virus directly into
the replicated food at a molecular level.Copy !req
264. - So it's sabotage.
- Cardassian sabotage.Copy !req
265. - How can you be sure?
- Diboridium core for a power source.Copy !req
266. That is Cardassian technology.Copy !req
267. - Bashir to Sisko.
- Sisko here.Copy !req
268. You'd better get down here
to the infirmary, as soon as possible.Copy !req
269. On my way.Copy !req
270. You wanted to see me, Doctor?Copy !req
271. Jake?Copy !req
272. Left... become better...Copy !req
273. control... entire hope.Copy !req
274. We've converted some empty
crew quarters into a hospital ward.Copy !req
275. I'll take him there.Copy !req
276. You're going to be all right, Jake.Copy !req
277. Commander, when you've got a momentCopy !req
278. I've found something
I'd like to show you.Copy !req
279. It'll be all right. Just lay back.Copy !req
280. I know, but just lay back and relax.Copy !req
281. Food... dabo... drinks.Copy !req
282. money... hand... mine... give!Copy !req
283. I see even you couldn't
weasel your way clear of this one.Copy !req
284. You underestimate the Ferengi
immune system, Commander.Copy !req
285. I'm here visiting
my less fortunate customersCopy !req
286. to make sure they're not faking
to avoid paying their bills.Copy !req
287. - No one could be that devious.
- I am.Copy !req
288. You... gold... owe... me!Copy !req
289. l... now... give!Copy !req
290. We're doing everything possible.Copy !req
291. I'll be back as soon as I can.Copy !req
292. The virus is synthetic, Commander.Copy !req
293. lts nucleotide sequence is too perfect.
It's not natural.Copy !req
294. You're saying the Cardassians
genetically engineered this thing?Copy !req
295. I thought so, but I've studied
Cardassian genetic engineering.Copy !req
296. They build distinctive
monoclonal links into their DNA.Copy !req
297. - This has none of those features.
- Then who made it?Copy !req
298. I referenced all known DNA construction
techniques in the Federation recordsCopy !req
299. and this protein series was the key.
It indicates...Copy !req
300. - Doctor! Who created this virus?
- The Bajorans, sir.Copy !req
301. It must have been a plot
to sabotage the Cardassians.Copy !req
302. The energy decay of the power coreCopy !req
303. indicates it dates back
to the building of the station.Copy !req
304. That's 18 years ago.
I suppose the Bajoran undergroundCopy !req
305. could have smuggled it aboard
during construction...Copy !req
306. before I took over as Head of Security.Copy !req
307. Why would they go to the troubleCopy !req
308. of planting a booby trap
and not set it off?Copy !req
309. - Maybe they forgot.
- No.Copy !req
310. We need to find out
who created this virus.Copy !req
311. You're our best hope.Copy !req
312. 18 years is a long time.Copy !req
313. Even if she finds who did this,
that's no guarantee they can help.Copy !req
314. I hope they remember the antidote.Copy !req
315. That's assuming
they ever bothered to create one.Copy !req
316. It had to be someone
familiar with genetic engineering.Copy !req
317. Sounds like something
Dekon Elig might have thought up.Copy !req
318. - How can I find him?
- The last I heard he was in prison.Copy !req
319. - Where was he being held?
- The Velos Vll lnternment Camp.Copy !req
320. But that was nine years ago.Copy !req
321. And you have no idea where he is now?
Think, Galis! This is important.Copy !req
322. I'm sorry, Kira, but it was all so long ago.Copy !req
323. - What is it, Jake?
- Roll linger when life...Copy !req
324. - Roll linger when...
- What?Copy !req
325. Other support, strong courage...Copy !req
326. He's running a high fever.Copy !req
327. Open way long. Open way.Copy !req
328. Doctor, we have
an emergency in crew quarters.Copy !req
329. - How is he, Doctor?
- Not good, I'm afraid.Copy !req
330. The virus has attacked
his autonomic nervous system.Copy !req
331. He's not responding
to neural stimulation.Copy !req
332. I've given him corophizine
to avoid secondary infectionCopy !req
333. but I've been unable to lower his fever.Copy !req
334. What are his chances?Copy !req
335. Unless I find some way
to counteract the virusCopy !req
336. he'll be dead in twelve hours.Copy !req
337. - Have you made any progress?
- No.Copy !req
338. I've tried base pair destabilisers,
sequential disruption.Copy !req
339. Nothing seems to affect it.Copy !req
340. Sir, I've got seven other aphasiac patientsCopy !req
341. displaying the same symptoms
as O'Brien,Copy !req
342. and I'm afraid this is only the beginning.Copy !req
343. Keep searching, Doctor.Copy !req
344. I hope Major Kira finds whoever's
responsible for creating this virus.Copy !req
345. I'd like to meet that person myself.Copy !req
346. This virus is a work of genius.Copy !req
347. I'll try to arrange it for you.Copy !req
348. Link established with
the Bajoran Archival Records.Copy !req
349. Locate files
on Velos Vll lnternment Camp.Copy !req
350. Do you show a record
of an inmate named Dekon Elig?Copy !req
351. - Affirmative.
- Biographical data.Copy !req
352. Dekon Elig, geneticist.Copy !req
353. Former member of the Higa Metar sect
of the Bajoran underground.Copy !req
354. Killed while attempting escape,
Stardate 39355.Copy !req
355. Certificate of Death on file.Copy !req
356. - No need to ask how you're doing.
- Chasing after ghosts.Copy !req
357. You have twelve hours to catch one.Copy !req
358. - And then?
- People start dying.Copy !req
359. Computer...Copy !req

- I haven't won a spin in hours.Copy !req
372. Care to place a friendly wager?Copy !req
373. if it's your reputation you're thinking about
no one need ever know.Copy !req
374. It has nothing to do with my reputation.Copy !req
375. The truth is, I never...
learned the game.Copy !req
376. You've sat here for all these yearsCopy !req
377. and you don't even know how to gamble?Copy !req
378. That's correct.Copy !req
379. No wonder you always look so bored.Copy !req
380. The rules are quite simple, actually.Copy !req
381. - I'd be happy to show you.
- Some other time, perhaps.Copy !req
382. Sisko needs me in Ops.Copy !req
383. And since the entire security force
has been stricken with aphasiaCopy !req
384. the Promenade
is in a vulnerable position.Copy !req
385. - How unfortunate.
- Consider it a warning, Quark.Copy !req
386. Because I'm holding you
personally responsibleCopy !req
387. if anything turns up missing.Copy !req
388. Is that understood?Copy !req
389. Perfectly.Copy !req
