1. - Some call them
a cultural phenomenon,
Copy !req
2. others a one-hit wonder.
Copy !req
3. But when a rag-tag group of
underwater musicians performed
Copy !req
4. at the coveted Bubble
Bowl half-time show,
Copy !req
5. they stole the
hearts of millions,
Copy !req
6. including one humble newscaster.
Copy !req
7. I'm Kent Shocknek and this
is Sponge Bob Docu-Pants.
Copy !req
8. During the annual Bubble
Bowl halftime show
Copy !req
9. when the very earth
opened up and from below
Copy !req
10. emerged a high-tech
dome containing
Copy !req
11. anthropomorphic sea creatures
holding musical instruments,
Copy !req
12. nobody expected much.
Copy !req
13. But in mere moments, the
crowd would be entranced
Copy !req
14. by the sounds of
"Sweet Victory".
Copy !req
15. - It was absolutely explosive.
Copy !req
16. I mean, you could
really feel the energy
Copy !req
17. from the crowd just skyrocket.
Copy !req
18. - It was a blast and
it wasn't expected.
Copy !req
19. We were just blown away
by how good they were.
Copy !req
20. It may have been the greatest
performance of all time.
Copy !req
21. And nobody knew who they were.
Copy !req
22. - Everyone
knows that performance,
Copy !req
23. that perfection we all heard.
Copy !req
24. But in the early days, the
band they were really a mess.
Copy !req
25. They never even
came up with a name.
Copy !req
26. - The band was
made up of several
Copy !req
27. unknown rookie musicians.
Copy !req
28. But at the helm was lead
vocalist SpongeBob Square Pants.
Copy !req
29. - SpongeBob was a
relatively new artist
Copy !req
30. but he did have some experience.
Copy !req
31. He mostly sang out of passion.
Copy !req
32. So he never really went out
of his way to get discovered.
Copy !req
33. - This kid could take almost
anything in his environment
Copy !req
34. and turn it to music.
Copy !req
35. - And it was good
music, every time.
Copy !req
36. - He wasn't
professionally trained,
Copy !req
37. he was just naturally talented.
Copy !req
38. He could do anything.
Copy !req
39. Give him a song and
he could twist it
Copy !req
40. into any style of music.
Copy !req
41. - If SpongeBob provided
Copy !req
42. the heart and soul of the band,
Copy !req
43. then the brain came
from the bands manager,
Copy !req
44. Squidward Tentacles.
Copy !req
45. - Squidward was a
struggling musician.
Copy !req
46. I think for his whole life.
Copy !req
47. He was really, well
he never gave up.
Copy !req
48. So I think that was his
best quality as a musician.
Copy !req
49. - His thwarted
ambitions led Squidward
Copy !req
50. to a life filled with
crushing cynicism.
Copy !req
51. And then he got a phone
call from a former classmate
Copy !req
52. and self-proclaimed
rival, Squilliam Fancyson.
Copy !req
53. - Squilliam at the time
was filthy, stinking rich.
Copy !req
54. He had everything
Squidward wanted.
Copy !req
55. An esteemed band,
spotless reputation,
Copy !req
56. and this gorgeous uni brow.
Copy !req
57. - Squilliam was a
real piece of work.
Copy !req
58. He knew Squidward
didn't have a band,
Copy !req
59. he just wanted to rub it in.
Copy !req
60. So he called him and
asked him to take his spot
Copy !req
61. performing at the Bubble Bowl.
Copy !req
62. He knew it would
just humiliate him.
Copy !req
63. - Oh, I'm sure Squilliam was
pretty pleased with himself.
Copy !req
64. Hearing Squidward struggle
on the phone like that,
Copy !req
65. bet he's not laughing now.
Copy !req
66. - Desperate to
rise to the challenge,
Copy !req
67. Squidward used the few
connections the had
Copy !req
68. to put together an unlikely
group of potential musicians.
Copy !req
69. Among them were Sheldon
Plankton, Patrick Star,
Copy !req
70. Sandy Cheeks, Poppy
Pup, Eugene Krabs,
Copy !req
71. and SpongeBob
Squarepants himself.
Copy !req
72. And just like that,
they were on the road
Copy !req
73. to the Bubble Bowl.
Copy !req
74. - I don't think there was anyone
Copy !req
75. who's not a fan of these guys.
Copy !req
76. But what people don't understand
Copy !req
77. is that when they first
started out they were terrible.
Copy !req
78. They had no rhythm.
Copy !req
79. A lot of them had never played
a musical instrument before
Copy !req
80. and they had no chemistry
with each other.
Copy !req
81. - Anytime this group
would get in a room together,
Copy !req
82. it was madness.
Copy !req
83. There were too many
big personalities.
Copy !req
84. - Who did these guys
think they were?
Copy !req
85. A bunch of amateurs
acting like rock stars.
Copy !req
86. I mean Squidward
that guy had to have
Copy !req
87. a whole lot of patience.
Copy !req
88. - Squidward was old school.
Copy !req
89. He didn't even consider
mayonnaise an instrument.
Copy !req
90. That caused some tension.
Copy !req
91. - The direction the band
Copy !req
92. was heading didn't look good.
Copy !req
93. Their biggest
obstacle was proving
Copy !req
94. to be their lack of any
musical talent whatsoever.
Copy !req
95. - You can never tell what's
gonna work and what isn't.
Copy !req
96. It just turned out
that unfortunately
Copy !req
97. there just wasn't
much of an appetite
Copy !req
98. for ungodly, horrible music.
Copy !req
99. It was just a star that didn't
have much of a following,
Copy !req
100. unlike today.
Copy !req
101. - The band
was at a low point.
Copy !req
102. But it was only getting lower,
Copy !req
103. until they finally
reached an all-time low
Copy !req
104. when a tragic accident
shook the group to its core.
Copy !req
105. - You never find
more beloved flag twirlers
Copy !req
106. than Fred the Fish and
the other flag twirler.
Copy !req
107. - The flag twirlers were
a couple of characters.
Copy !req
108. They weren't this central focus.
Copy !req
109. I guess you could say, they
weren't the main characters.
Copy !req
110. They didn't have to be.
Copy !req
111. - It's dangerous, twirling.
Copy !req
112. That's why most bands
don't have flag twirlers.
Copy !req
113. But Fred and, they
both knew the risk.
Copy !req
114. - With the Bubble Bowl
performance fast approaching,
Copy !req
115. Squidward had begun
to feel the pressure.
Copy !req
116. In turn, he let that
same pressure fall
Copy !req
117. on the flag twirlers.
Copy !req
118. And eager to meet their
leaders expectations.
Copy !req
119. the flag twirlers, the heart
and soul and gills of the band,
Copy !req
120. twirled their last flag.
Copy !req
121. - It was hard to keep
going after that.
Copy !req
122. Everyone was devastated.
Copy !req
123. I'm sure Squidward
somewhat blamed himself.
Copy !req
124. But it wasn't his fault really.
Copy !req
125. He couldn't have known.
Copy !req
126. - Yeah after that
they really tanked.
Copy !req
127. I mean I didn't think
they get could any worse.
Copy !req
128. But a couple of days later,
Copy !req
129. everything just fell apart.
Copy !req
130. - On the night before
the Bubble Bowl performance
Copy !req
131. tensions were high.
Copy !req
132. The band hadn't improved since
their first day of practice.
Copy !req
133. And time had all but run out.
Copy !req
134. That would be all it would take
Copy !req
135. for the band to
turn on each other.
Copy !req
136. - It started with Harold,
he provoked Eugene.
Copy !req
137. Made some comment about
his big meaty claws.
Copy !req
138. Then SpongeBob
tried to intervene.
Copy !req
139. His heart was in the right place
Copy !req
140. but he came off as a
little bit preachy.
Copy !req
141. - Squidward had no chance
of calming these guys down.
Copy !req
142. Before he knew it, the whole
band was in a full-on brawl.
Copy !req
143. They were using the
equipment as weapons.
Copy !req
144. I heard SpongeBob was seen
holding a dismembered arm.
Copy !req
145. They were acting like animals.
Copy !req
146. - Watching his band
descend into total chaos
Copy !req
147. proved to be too
much for Squidward
Copy !req
148. and at 10 PM he reached
his own breaking point.
Copy !req
149. - He really laid into them.
Copy !req
150. He scolded them.
Copy !req
151. I think if Squidward
had just been angry,
Copy !req
152. the band would have
just brushed it off,
Copy !req
153. I mean, they were angry too.
Copy !req
154. But it was the disappointment
Copy !req
155. that really seemed to hit them.
Copy !req
156. They let him down.
Copy !req
157. - He said, that's it.
Copy !req
158. If you don't care about
this, neither do I.
Copy !req
159. Don't bother coming
back tomorrow.
Copy !req
160. - He said he was
gonna tell everyone
Copy !req
161. that they all died in
a marching accident.
Copy !req
162. Right after the loss
of their flag twirlers,
Copy !req
163. it was a low blow.
Copy !req
164. But Squidward was
in a low place.
Copy !req
165. - They had been
given four full days
Copy !req
166. to simply become
professional musicians.
Copy !req
167. And they had
squandered all of it.
Copy !req
168. The band stared in disbelief
as their fearless leader
Copy !req
169. finally gave up on them.
Copy !req
170. Until one hopefully little
sponge in square pants spoke up.
Copy !req
171. - Remember, SpongeBob
had musical experience
Copy !req
172. and he had the
respect of the band.
Copy !req
173. He was the next best
thing to a leader.
Copy !req
174. So I think it had to be
him that would step up.
Copy !req
175. - What kind of monsters
are we he said.
Copy !req
176. That poor creature came to us
Copy !req
177. in his hour of need
and we failed him.
Copy !req
178. Hearing SpongeBob say
that, that fired them up,
Copy !req
179. it inspired them.
Copy !req
180. They were like, maybe
we can still do this.
Copy !req
181. - Ugh, I wish I could have been
a fly on a wall that night.
Copy !req
182. Where they had that one
last late-night rehearsal.
Copy !req
183. No one really knows what
went down that night
Copy !req
184. but whatever happened,
you can be darn sure
Copy !req
185. that it was magical.
Copy !req
186. - It was well after 10 PM
Copy !req
187. when the band began
their final practice.
Copy !req
188. And they worked tirelessly
through the night.
Copy !req
189. Learning to be musicians
essentially from scratch
Copy !req
190. was a grueling process.
Copy !req
191. And it was only a matter of
hours before their time was up
Copy !req
192. and they were
forced to work with
Copy !req
193. whatever they had learned
that that short time.
Copy !req
194. The following morning,
the entire band showed up
Copy !req
195. bright and early at
the annual Bubble Bowl
Copy !req
196. for their debut performance.
Copy !req
197. - Squilliam was really already
Copy !req
198. rubbing it into
Squidward's face.
Copy !req
199. But when the band showed up,
Copy !req
200. well Squidward was more
surprised than Squilliam.
Copy !req
201. - He had heard
them the night before,
Copy !req
202. they weren't even
close to ready.
Copy !req
203. I know Squidward was just like,
Copy !req
204. what are you guys doing here?
Copy !req
205. - But the time to
back out was behind him.
Copy !req
206. And so the band of amateur
musicians took center stage.
Copy !req
207. - Imagine being in that
crowd, watching the game,
Copy !req
208. it's halftime, Maroon
5 finishes their set
Copy !req
209. and everyone's wondering
who is gonna perform now?
Copy !req
210. - And then
the ground opens up
Copy !req
211. and from the earth
rises a glass dome
Copy !req
212. filled with a dozen or
so humanoid sea creatures
Copy !req
213. holding musical
instruments, I mean, yawn.
Copy !req
214. - But before you could
get out of your seat
Copy !req
215. they start playing.
Copy !req
216. And suddenly you're
captivated, everybody is.
Copy !req
217. - SpongeBob's unmatched
voice led the performance.
Copy !req
218. Accompanied by Plankton
on the keyboard.
Copy !req
219. The rest of the band
slowly joined in.
Copy !req
220. Patrick on the drums, Sandy and
Mrs. Pup on electric guitar,
Copy !req
221. and Eugene on the keytar.
Copy !req
222. - I'll never forget the
look on Squidward's face
Copy !req
223. when he heard them play.
Copy !req
224. He was floored.
Copy !req
225. - The performance
had an impact
Copy !req
226. on everyone who witnessed it.
Copy !req
227. And within a week
it had skyrocketed
Copy !req
228. to the top of Bubble Bowl
halftime show charts.
Copy !req
229. - I think it was such a
success because it really was
Copy !req
230. the gold standard of
music from then on.
Copy !req
231. But the band kind of realized
Copy !req
232. it's not gonna get
better than this.
Copy !req
233. We are never gonna beat this.
Copy !req
234. - The group never
performed together again
Copy !req
235. but its legacy remains intact.
Copy !req
236. Most of it members retired
from the music industry.
Copy !req
237. Those who continued never
swam quite as high again.
Copy !req
238. - SpongeBob and Squidward
reunited to create
Copy !req
239. a clarinet, ukulele duet.
Copy !req
240. They eventually enlisted
Plankton and Patrick
Copy !req
241. to form the band.
Copy !req
242. SpongeBob and Eugene
even released a single.
Copy !req
243. They were all good but
they never came close
Copy !req
244. to the magic of that "Sweet
Victory" performance.
Copy !req
245. - It's not like they
needed more success.
Copy !req
246. Some bands get a
taste of greatness
Copy !req
247. and they desire more
because they're desperate
Copy !req
248. to prove it's a fluke.
Copy !req
249. But not these guys because
Copy !req
250. they didn't get a
taste of greatness,
Copy !req
251. they achieved greatness,
they redefined greatness,
Copy !req
252. they set the new
standard for greatness.
Copy !req
253. - That's why I say to people
who call them one-hit wonder,
Copy !req
254. a one-hit wonder?
Copy !req
255. It was the only hit they needed.
Copy !req
256. Find me someone,
anywhere in the world
Copy !req
257. who didn't love that
performance, you can't.
Copy !req
258. - Today that fateful
Bubble Bowl performance
Copy !req
259. is still talked about worldwide.
Copy !req
260. It lives on in
replays, recreations
Copy !req
261. and in the memories of the
thousands who witnessed it live.
Copy !req
262. While the bands success
may have been fleeting,
Copy !req
263. the effect it's music had on
Copy !req
264. the hearts of millions
will last forever.
Copy !req
