2. during the 21st Annual Fry Cook Games,

3. that thousands of fans gathered to watch an event

4. they were sure would be historic.

5. But they were wrong, because that night,

6. the contest that resolved the greatest rivalry

7. in sports history was more than historic.

8. That night, the battle between Patrick Star

9. and SpongeBob SquarePants was the stuff of legends.

10. I'm Kent Shocknek, and this is SpongeBob DocuPants.

11. - The Fry Cook Games.

12. I mean, what could be bigger than the Fry Cook Games?

13. The Fast Food Coliseum, the cheering ground,

14. the realistic fish head announcing.

15. If you are any sort of athlete, that's the dream.

16. - I mean, the whole world is watching.

17. Even the opening ceremony was mind-blowing.

18. The torch went out before the fire was lit,

19. the torchbearer caught fire.

20. You just knew it was gonna be an exciting game.

21. - It was a legend relived year after year.

22. A tradition upheld and coveted by its people.

23. And the ultimate showdown in the world of sports.

24. It was the Fry Cook Games.

25. Microwaves hum, patties sizzle,

26. and heat lamps keep the fast food spirit warm,

27. as the hearts of millions of fans are won and lost

28. by the feats of godlike athletes.

29. But it was during the 21st Annual Fry Cook Games

30. in Bikini Bottom that the sport was taken to another level

31. by two bright-eyed young cooks who never knew

32. the impact they would have on the game.

33. - People were naturally excited about the games.

34. But when we saw SpongeBob and Patrick step out

35. into the arena, you could just feel it.

36. There was something about the electricity that they brought,

37. this year was gonna be big.

38. - It's a rivalry that even today

39. is considered an icon in sports history.

40. But for the young players involved,

41. it was somehow even bigger.

42. Because long before they shared the most polarizing match

43. of all time, Star and SquarePants

44. shared and unlikely friendship.

45. - It was a pretty well-kept secret that not only did they

46. know each other before the Fry Cook Games,

47. they lived on the same street.

48. They were neighbors.

49. Imagine if people knew that.

50. - As best friends and neighbors,

51. Star and SquarePants had bonded over bubble-blowing,

52. jellyfishing, and playing in empty cardboard boxes.

53. It was impossible to truly measure just how much

54. the pair had in common, but those who knew

55. their particular brand of fun could see

56. they were two of a kind.

57. So when SpongeBob was drafted by the Krusty Krab

58. as their new starting fry cook,

59. the dynamic of his friendship with Star began to shift.

60. - Patrick always put on a good face about it.

61. He was happy that SpongeBob got this opportunity.

62. But deep down, he was jealous, right?

63. - SpongeBob was a clear natural behind the grill,

64. and the world was catching on.

65. His performance day after day, quickly earning him

66. a reputation as the best the Krusty Krab had ever seen.

67. And with that realization came an onslaught of recognition.

68. - On almost a daily basis

69. he would get some kind of an award.

70. He even had a closet specifically in his pineapple

71. that was just for awards.

72. And SpongeBob and Patrick were neighbors

73. so every now and again something would get delivered

74. to Patrick's house that was an award for SpongeBob

75. and I think that hurt Patrick a little bit.

76. - SquarePants' success only shined a light

77. on the pair's differences.

78. SpongeBob lived in luxurious tropical fruit.

79. Patrick lived under a rock.

80. SpongeBob was breaking fast food records.

81. Patrick largely did nothing at all.

82. Until one day Star decided it was his time to shine

83. and applied for a job at the Krusty Krab.

84. - In Patrick's eyes, SpongeBob was the star.

85. Ironically.

86. He saw how talented he was, he saw how respected he was.

87. He just wanted a taste of that.

88. - SpongeBob happily took his old friend

89. under his wing.

90. Until now, the world only had eyes for their beloved,

91. absorbent fry cook.

92. They never saw Patrick Star coming.

93. - It's his first shift

94. and he's already making unforced errors.

95. He answers the phone like a rookie.

96. His form the broom?

97. Horrible.

98. He's flustered.

99. Finally, he's trying to prove himself.

100. This is the opportunity of his life.

101. - It marked the beginning of his career.

102. But his poor performance was threatening

103. to bring it to a swift end.

104. Star knew that his only hope was to pull off something big.

105. - It was his first day, okay?

106. His first day!

107. He's an absolute rookie, he is just making error

108. after error, I mean, the clock is running out,

109. he knows that it is now or never.

110. And then there's this jar that needs to be opened.

111. And you can see the focus on his face.

112. It's as if everything else goes silent.

113. And he puts his hand on the lid of the jar,

114. and like it's nothing, he takes the lid off the jar.

115. I mean, he makes it look easy!

116. - His hand is on the jar and, oh!

117. The lid has come clean off the jar!

118. That's right, newcomer Patrick Star

119. has successfully opened a jar

120. on the first day of his fry cooking career!

121. Can you believe it!

122. - The press had a field day.

123. I thought some of those reporters were gonna faint.

124. They had never heard of Patrick Star.

125. It was as if he was living under a rock.

126. Then they find out it's his first day

127. and already he's taking lids off of jars.

128. Remarkable.

129. - It was that play that solidified Star's place

130. in the memory of fry cooking fans everywhere.

131. He had found his 15 minutes of fame and he wanted more.

132. On his next shift, Patrick doubled down on a new strategy

133. of copying his friend's every move,

134. and it was putting a strain on their friendship.

135. - His whole plan was to do exactly what SpongeBob did.

136. He was even dressing like him.

137. It was weird, actually.

138. - You know, that was really the first time

139. I think they saw each other as enemies.

140. They were on the same team but they were competing.

141. - It's that shift that many believe was the birth

142. of what would become a legendary rivalry.

143. It could be seen as a preview of the clash

144. that would eventually come during the 21st Fry Cook Games.

145. But this preview would be short-lived

146. because just as the battle was heating up,

147. it was brought to a screeching halt

148. when Patrick received an award.

149. - To SpongeBob, that was the end of it.

150. They had had their battle.

151. Patrick had got what he wanted, he was an award-winner now.

152. It was over.

153. - Doing absolutely nothing longer than anybody else.

154. That's what his award was for.

155. Sure, it sounds awesome, but I think under his smile,

156. Patrick was borderline insulted by the award.

157. - Despite his disappointment,

158. the arrival of Star's award seemed to calm the storm

159. of their rivalry, with Star resigning from his position

160. at the Krusty Krab.

161. While it's difficult to know why the young starfish

162. stepped down, one thing's for sure.

163. This rivalry was far from over.

164. - Things went back to normal for awhile after that.

165. The rivalry was over.

166. SpongeBob went back to his career,

167. Patrick rediscovered his passion

168. for doing absolutely nothing

169. until he discovered the Fry Cook Games.

170. - As the 21st Annual Fry Cook Games fast approached,

171. SpongeBob received late word that he was being called up

172. to compete on what would be perhaps the greatest day

173. of his young life.

174. To him, bringing home the gold would be to bring honor

175. and glory to the Krusty Krab, a restaurant that already

176. had quite a reputation at the games.

177. - The Fry Cook Games were huge.

178. The simple fact is when they were goin' on,

179. people were paying attention.

180. If you were go poll the crowd and ask 'em why

181. they were watching, you'd get a bunch of answers.

182. Some people would say for the love of the game,

183. for the fish sticks, for the tradition,

184. blah blah blah blah blah.

185. But the real reason we were watching

186. was to see the Krusty Krab face off against the Chum Bucket.

187. That rivalry was captivating before anybody ever heard

188. of SpongeBob SquarePants or Patrick Star.

189. - The contention between these two restaurant

190. powerhouses spans decades and always seems to be centered

191. around their respective owners, Eugene Krabs

192. and Sheldon Plankton.

193. - When the Krusty Krab announced that SpongeBob

194. was gonna compete over Krabs?

195. I mean, we were shocked.

196. That's cool but who was gonna compete for the Chum Bucket?

197. - I genuinely, genuinely believe

198. that Patrick showed up to support SpongeBob.

199. But then when he got there,

200. things didn't go that way.

201. - This game meant so much to SpongeBob.

202. And with Patrick there too, well,

203. you just knew it was gonna turn into a fight.

204. I mean, with the history these guys have.

205. - Patrick just started calling fry cooking easy.

206. SpongeBob got a little heated and then Patrick said,

207. oh come on, you're just flipping patties.

208. I'm sorry, what?

209. - SpongeBob wasn't innocent in all this.

210. He was starting to get a little bit of an ego.

211. He started calling the fry cooks an elite corp

212. and implying that Pat wasn't a part of this.

213. - It was that small encounter

214. that would change the course of history.

215. With the old rivalry reignited and fresh

216. in the minds of both competitors,

217. the Fry Cook Games took an unexpected turn.

218. - We had just heard that SpongeBob would be competing, okay?

219. The Chum Bucket didn't even stand a chance.

220. I think Plankton really felt small in that moment.

221. And then, like a sign from Neptune,

222. one person in the world who could take on SpongeBob

223. walks into his grass angry

224. and ready to get back in the game.

225. It was meant to be.

226. - Ladies and gentlemen,

227. turn your attention to the southwest corridor.

228. Representing the Chum Bucket, Patrick Star!

229. - In an unprecedented move,

230. the Chum Bucket changed their roster

231. just moments before the start of the game.

232. And just like that, the two cooks from Conch Street

233. were back on that familiar collision course

234. that started all those years ago.

235. - Who would have ever thought we'd get to see this?

236. These guys were both favorites from the same hometown.

237. And now they were facing each other!

238. - SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star.

239. Two cooks who had both taken vastly different paths

240. with the same destination.

241. The 21st Annual Fry Cook Games.

242. And they were about to begin.

243. - These guys were playing the same game

244. but with totally different playbooks.

245. Take the chocolate high dive.

246. SpongeBob attempts a full banana fudge pop with two sticks.

247. Two sticks.

248. Wow.

249. He knew he needed something big, and he nails it.

250. And he even had toasted almonds.

251. I mean, by the books, it's absolutely perfect.

252. Then Patrick steps up and he's not fancy,

253. his form's kinda sloppy,

254. but he pulls off this beautiful single-scoop strawberry cone

255. with a chocolate dip.

256. This guy's, he's playing an old-school game.

257. And everybody's eating it up.

258. You saw this pattern repeated itself in every event.

259. The patty toss, the butter skating, spatula skiing.

260. SpongeBob was the seasoned vet, everything by the books.

261. Patrick was the rookie of the year.

262. Just so full of raw passion.

263. You can't teach that.

264. - That's what made this so explosive.

265. I mean, SpongeBob represented

266. the institution of fry cooking.

267. If you followed the sport, you had to love the kid.

268. But Patrick, Patrick represented the fans.

269. He represented all those kids who looked up to him

270. and they said, one day I can do that.

271. And how can you root against that?

272. - I don't wanna say it wasn't fun to watch.

273. I mean,

274. of course it was, it was a historic game!

275. But wow, it was also stressful.

276. I mean, you don't wanna see either of these guys go down.

277. And it was so close, there wasn't a single moment

278. when one pulled ahead of the other.

279. They were just neck and neck the whole time.

280. Sure, they were opposites.

281. But they were exactly the same.

282. - The contest went on for hours,

283. full of ups and downs for both beloved competitors,

284. but never tipping the scales in favor of either champion.

285. In the end it would all come down to bun wrestling.

286. - Of course if a game ever goes to bun wrestling,

287. it's exciting, but this time it was even more.

288. I mean, all night these guys have been clashing

289. and it's a real battle.

290. But in the bun wrestling?

291. There was so much anger.

292. So much emotion from both of them.

293. - It was the first time that fans could see

294. that something deeper was happening.

295. The gloves were off.

296. These two were not afraid to fight dirty.

297. - It was like the refs were watching a different game.

298. You know, Patrick actually licked SpongeBob's foot.

299. What are you blind?

300. That was intentional!

301. - Then there was erase gate.

302. Patrick's name wasn't Rick, SpongeBob knew that.

303. No one can ever prove it, but come on,

304. clearly he had an illegal eraser out there.

305. Say what you will about their rivalry,

306. that was below the belt.

307. - As the match raged on, the true animosity

308. between the two fry cooks reared its ugly head

309. and threatened to overshadow the honor and tradition

310. of the Fry Cook Games.

311. But at the darkest moment of the thunderous clash

312. a glimmer of light shined through.

313. - We weren't excited anymore, we weren't cheering,

314. we were scared!

315. No, really!

316. I mean we had seen how real it had gotten.

317. It was beyond competition and sports.

318. And then right then, right when the tension

319. was just at its peak,

320. you could hear it.

321. Rip.

322. - Fry cooking's not

323. for the faint of heart.

324. These athletes, they know the risk.

325. Pant rips happen.

326. Even to SpongeBob.

327. But a simultaneous rip.

328. Both players at the same time.

329. It was unheard of.

330. - Players froze as their pants ripped away,

331. exposing the unlikely color of their underwear.

332. Patrick wore yellow and SpongeBob wore pink.

333. - The underwear really showed the respect

334. they had for each other.

335. To know that they got up that morning

336. and put on that color underwear,

337. out of respect.

338. Even though they were enemies, they had,

339. they had this connection.

340. This history that couldn't be broken.

341. And it obviously meant a lot to both of them.

342. Even though they couldn't say it.

343. - Think of all that tension,

344. that aggression they both had bottled up.

345. And then buried even deeper, that feeling of respect

346. they had for one another that they pretended wasn't there.

347. And then to have that weight just suddenly lifted.

348. Anyone woulda broken down.

349. - The renowned hero of the Krusty Krab

350. and the wunderkind everyman who lived under a rock.

351. Their stories couldn't be more different

352. but somehow they were intertwined.

353. It was these two anomalies of the sport

354. who played a historic game, a game that would change

355. the sport of fry cooking forever.

356. And they didn't even finish it.

357. - You forget sometimes that both players forfeited that day.

358. As soon as they saw the underpants.

359. They couldn't fight anymore.

360. They were flying each other's flags.

361. It was bigger than sports.

362. - You know there are people who think this game

363. didn't really have that big of an impact

364. because they never finished it.

365. And yeah, the game was forfeited

366. and it didn't impact the standings of either franchise.

367. But you had to think of where the sport was

368. before this game.

369. For decades it was all about the hatred

370. between Krabs and Plankton,

371. the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket.

372. And all traces of sportsmanship or respect

373. were out the window.

374. Then these two legacies corrupted a new generation.

375. They were showboating.

376. They were fighting dirty.

377. And no one was surprised.

378. That's where fry cooking was before this game.

379. - For the first time in years,

380. fry cooking as seen as an honorable sport.

381. A game with heart.

382. You know, before the game started,

383. SpongeBob said that bringing home the gold

384. would bring honor and glory to the Krusty Krab,

385. but seeing those two up there together,

386. SpongeBob and Patrick, side by side,

387. well that brought honor and glory

388. to the entire sport of fry cooking.
