1. - You know the restaurant, you know the menu,

2. but few know the true secret behind

3. the Krusty Krab's culinary quality, Spongebob Squarepants.

4. Tonight we'll explore the meteoric rise,

5. tragic fall and inspiring redemption

6. of the Krusty Krab's famous fry cook

7. with square pants.

8. I'm Ken Shocknek and this is Spongebob Docupants.

9. It was just an ordinary morning in Bikini Bottom

10. when a simple sea sponge emerged from his pineapple

11. ready to chase his dreams.

12. Little did he know the world of fast food burgers

13. was about to change forever.

14. - The legend is that Spongebob marched

15. right into the Krusty Krab

16. and was just hired almost on the spot

17. and of course there's actually a lot more to it than that.

18. I don't really think that Spongebob actually knew

19. how good a cook he was.

20. He had a lot of self doubt.

21. - Filled with apprehension

22. the young sponge was on the brink of giving up

23. before ever even chasing his dream of fast food greatness.

24. It was then that he was comforted by lifelong friend

25. and neighbor Patrick Star.

26. - Nobody believed in Spongebob more than Patrick.

27. The two of them, they were thick as thieves,

28. and Patrick, he absolutely adored Spongebob.

29. He told him you're ready

30. and then Spongebob said, "I'm ready."

31. He was ready.

32. - Star's words ultimately provided

33. what Squarepants desperately needed,

34. determination, encouragement and the confidence

35. to confront Navy veteran and self made owner

36. of the Krusty Krab, Eugene Krabs.

37. Although Squarepants had overcome his nerves

38. with the help of one neighbor

39. his next obstacle would come in the form

40. of another neighbor, Squidward Tentatcles.

41. - How to describe Squidward,

42. he wasn't a bad guy.

43. No, I mean, okay, deep down he had a good heart

44. but people weren't crazy about him.

45. He could be a bit of a jerk, especially toward Spongebob.

46. Spongebob never could see how poorly

47. Squidward treated him, he always a saw the best in people.

48. Spongebob actually believed that Squidward

49. would put in a good word for him.

50. - I think Eugene really trusted Squidward

51. and if he said Spongebob wasn't a good fit

52. that actually carried a lot of weight.

53. So they sent him on this crazy errand,

54. they wanted him to find a hydrodynamic spatula

55. with port and starboard attachments and a turbo drive.

56. Those are really hard to find.

57. - Looking for an excuse

58. to get rid of the eager sponge,

59. Krabs sent him on a seemingly impossible errand,

60. an errand that Spongebob accepted with blind optimism.

61. But moments after he left,

62. disaster would strike the Krusty Krab.

63. - To say that the anchovies that frequented the Krusty Krab

64. were rowdy would be an understatement.

65. These anchovies were downright aggressive.

66. - Five undersea buses,

67. that's how many pulled up to the Krusty Krab that day,

68. each one overflowing with relentless and hungry anchovies.

69. - These buses were packed with anchovies,

70. they were like sardines.

71. They just came flooding into the building

72. and I remember I could hear one of them shout, "Meep."

73. And then there was this other one

74. who said something like, "Meep."

75. I couldn't make out the rest.

76. - Overwhelmed by the sheer force of the crowd,

77. Krabs and Tentacles were forced to climb

78. to the highest point of the crow's nest,

79. clinging to safety as they awaited

80. what seemed like their inevitable doom.

81. Krabs could only weep as the fast food empire

82. he built with his big, meaty claws

83. was near moments away from total destruction,

84. or so he though.

85. - It was right when all hope was lost.

86. Mr. Krabs was literally crying for his Mommy

87. and then out of nowhere this unassuming sponge

88. comes running in with this monster of a spatula

89. and he says, "Did somebody order a spatula?"

90. - You couldn't write a story this perfect!

91. Spongebob looked like an action star.

92. He even brought his own megaphone.

93. The guy had nerve

94. and needless to say,

95. suddenly Eugene is paying very close attention

96. to this little sea sponge from Conch Street.

97. - Seeing his opportunity at last,

98. Squarepants took center stage and went to work

99. making what amounted to thousands of Krabby Patties

100. in record time.

101. - Squidward didn't even have to seat anyone,

102. Spongebob just served the burgers

103. directly into the customers' mouths.

104. - Whenever Eugene would talk about that day

105. you could see in his eye stalks

106. he knew how lucky he was.

107. The kid was lightning in a bottle.

108. - Knowing that a winning lottery ticket

109. had just walked into his store,

110. Krabs hired Spongebob on the spot

111. and much to Squidward's dismay,

112. Spongebob began a fry cooking career

113. that would forever endear him

114. to the citizens of Bikini Bottom.

115. He had found the kind of happiness

116. only fry cooking could bring.

117. But little did he know that rough waters lay ahead.

118. - Everything was going perfectly for Spongebob at the time.

119. He was working out, he was doing martial arts,

120. everyone adored him at the Krusty Krab

121. but then that's when Bubble Bass came into the picture

122. and things got pretty tough for him after that.

123. - His turmoil would come in the form

124. of indulgent and self proclaimed food critic Bubble Bass.

125. - Up until that point, Spongebob had only ever dealt

126. with a sea of adoring fans.

127. In their eyes he could do not wrong,

128. but Bubble Bass, he wasn't messing around.

129. If you crossed him,

130. he was not above asking to speak to the manager,

131. if that gives an idea of the kind of guy

132. we're dealing with here.

133. It was a scary time for a restaurant

134. when Bubble Bass came in.

135. One bad review could make or break your business.

136. - Spongebob wasn't afraid of Bubble Bass

137. and why should he be?

138. Since becoming a fry cook

139. there had never been a challenge that he couldn't tackle.

140. Nobody saw the pickle scandal coming.

141. - First bun, then patty followed by ketchup,

142. mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, cheese,

143. tomatoes and bun, in that order.

144. According to Squarepants that's the official way

145. to make a Krabby Patty.

146. It was a blueprint he could never forget,

147. or so he thought.

148. Two standard crinkle cut sea pickles.

149. They may seem like a minor detail

150. but it's all it would take to send

151. this once confident and renowned fry cook

152. into a downward spiral.

153. - Forgetting the pickles, even for a rookie,

154. can have a profound impact on a fry cook's self esteem.

155. So for a fast food hero like Spongebob,

156. it's emotionally devastating.

157. - It was the first real mistake he ever made

158. in his fast food career

159. but it haunted the porous fry cook.

160. Try as he might, he just couldn't shake

161. the wave of shame that came with forgetting pickles.

162. His talent for flipping burgers,

163. which once came as second nature,

164. had all but abandoned him.

165. After being sent on leave of absence by Krabs,

166. Squarepants hit rock bottom.

167. - It's not something you ever want

168. to see someone go through.

169. He couldn't even function.

170. If you came by his pineapple, just to check on him,

171. there was a toaster hanging from the door

172. and somehow you just knew that something wasn't right.

173. And the inside was even worse,

174. he had his shoes on top of the TV

175. and his breakfast was nailed,

176. I'm sorry,

177. thank you,

178. it was just really hard to see.

179. I think that being perfect,

180. it was such a huge part of who he was

181. that without it he just lost sight of who he was.

182. - At his lowest point,

183. Squarepants found a friend in an unlikely source,

184. his boss at the Krusty Krab, Eugene Krabs.

185. Some speculate that Krabs initially sought to help

186. solely out of self interest

187. to save his now failing business.

188. But regardless of his original intentions,

189. once he saw the tragic state of his employee

190. a different motivation took hold of the crustacean,

191. a feeling of fatherly compassion toward his young protege.

192. - I think Eugene was really one of the only people

193. who could've helped Spongebob.

194. He was the one who believed in Spongebob in the first place.

195. He was the embodiment of the Krusty Krab,

196. of Spongebob's hopes and dreams,

197. Spongebob idolized that crab.

198. - Over the next three days,

199. Krabs led an intensive intervention of focused mediation.

200. It was the beginning of the healing process.

201. The session included a chair of discouragement

202. with an exhausted Krabs

203. and an increasingly frustrated Spongebob.

204. And on the third night of the session,

205. Spongebob's frustration reached its breaking point.

206. - Three days is a long time to meditate.

207. You could a whole potato salad in three days.

208. And in such extreme cases like this,

209. all the self pity and the discouragement

210. can transform into anger and that's why Spongebob

211. lashed out the way he did

212. and he directed it at Eugene.

213. But in the end that anger was what he needed.

214. Sure, it was misdirected,

215. but it acted as a motivator.

216. It reignited the fry cooking fire inside of him

217. and everything came flooding back.

218. Mr. Krab wasn't even angry.

219. I think he was more so relieved that Spongebob

220. was showing some form of emotion again.

221. And you can tell that he was proud of the sponge

222. for working through it.

223. We all were.

224. - For the first time since the pickle scandal

225. Squarepants had successfully assembled

226. a traditional Krabby Patty.

227. He was ready to face Bubble Bass.

228. - When he finally returned to the Krusty Krab

229. it created quite a stir.

230. The people wanted Spongebob back.

231. Ironically they had never lost faith in him

232. and when he returned so did the crowds.

233. They wanted to support him

234. and they wanted to see him take Bubble Bass down.

235. - It was a rematch for the ages.

236. Bubble Bass arrived only moments after Squarepants.

237. The only thing bigger than his appetite

238. was his desire to knock his rival back to rock bottom.

239. The restaurant was silent that day

240. as the two behemoths of the fast food world

241. squared off for the rematch of the century.

242. Squarepants made a second Krabby Patty

243. with impressive skill and inspiring ease,

244. calling upon his regained confidence.

245. But for a second time, the ocean went cold.

246. The pickles were nowhere to be found.

247. - The crowd was stunned.

248. It had happened again.

249. And as much as we all wanted to believe in Spongebob,

250. there was a bit of doubt that spread through the crowd.

251. Maybe Spongebob was losing his touch.

252. You could almost feel all of the magic

253. and the wonder in the crowd just start to evaporate.

254. But Spongebob wasn't having it.

255. - What Bubble Bass didn't realize

256. is that all the hardship and turmoil

257. he put Spongebob through,

258. it actually made him a stronger sponge.

259. As horrible of an ordeal as that was

260. to get through all of that,

261. he was now more confident.

262. - Bubble Bass is just laughing at the idea

263. of ruining this kid's career.

264. It was sickening.

265. - But then in front of a crowd of dozens,

266. Spongebob reached out an arm

267. and before anyone knew what was happening,

268. the smile was quickly wiped off of Bubble Bass' face.

269. As the fry cook grabbed ahold of his tongue,

270. nothing could've prepared the onlookers

271. for what he found underneath.

272. - After all he put Spongebob through,

273. after all he put the world through,

274. it finally turned out Bubble Bass was a fraud.

275. - That dumb bass was hiding the pickles under his tongue.

276. And it wasn't just two pickles, there were four.

277. The pickles from last time.

278. He must've forgotten that they were there

279. but you know what, that means that Spongebob

280. had never forgot them in the first place.

281. - It's impossible to say for sure

282. why the burger loving bass did it.

283. Some speculate that he was jealous of Spongebob.

284. Others claim he's just one sadistic fish.

285. But no matter the reason, Bubble Bass has gone down

286. in Bikini Bottom history as the infamous fish

287. who tried and failed to take down

288. the town's beloved hero.

289. - It's funny, as much as Bass tried to ruin Spongebob

290. I think he actually helped him.

291. Now Spongebob was able to realize

292. how much he was capable of overcoming.

293. As horrible of an ordeal as it was,

294. going through all that,

295. he was now stronger, more absorbent.

296. - The people were shocked, they were angry,

297. but most of all they were relieved.

298. They realized that Spongebob had never

299. actually made a mistake in the first place

300. and you know what, shame on you if you thought

301. Spongebob would actually forget the pickles

302. just because this bass tricked you.

303. He tricked us all.

304. If hiring Spongebob brought the Krusty Krab

305. into a golden age, the Bubble Bass ordeal

306. brought it into a platinum age.

307. The people were elated to have him back.

308. He was even more of a hero now.

309. He was someone you could look up to.

310. It was all smiles at the Krusty Krab after that.

311. - Truly a lesson we can all learn.
