1. - Clark, you're gonna be late.
- Okay, Mom, I'm going as fast as I can.Copy !req
2. How can you be fast as lightning and
as slow as molasses all at the same time?Copy !req
3. Sometimes, Mom, I'm even
a mystery to myself.Copy !req
4. Wait a minute, didn't I fix
your alarm clock recently?Copy !req
5. I crushed it this morning
hitting the snooze alarm.Copy !req
6. - I'm not much of a morning person.
- Must have gotten that from your mother.Copy !req
7. She could be late to her own wedding.Copy !req
8. - She was late to her own wedding.
- Not all of us were trained by roosters.Copy !req
9. I was up late studying
for an exam, Greek tragedy.Copy !req
10. Speaking of Greek tragedy,
I've gotta get your mother to work.Copy !req
11. - Want a ride?
- No, I'd just slow you guys down.Copy !req
12. Thank you, baby.Copy !req
13. Hera freaks out because Zeus
has been two-timing her...Copy !req
14. with a mere mortal, no less, so she
sends a bunch of snakes to kill Hercules...Copy !req
15. who is the illegitimate babe
in the cradle.Copy !req
16. It's just family dysfunction
of Dionysian proportions.Copy !req
17. It sounds like these people
ought to be on Ricki Lake.Copy !req
18. While I don't condone her behavior,
Zeus did break his vows.Copy !req
19. Doesn't give her the right
to go Fatal Attraction.Copy !req
20. Hey, Clark, hell hath no fury
like a woman scorned.Copy !req
21. Hello, Clark.Copy !req
22. - Do we know each other?
- No.Copy !req
23. Well, yes.Copy !req
24. Clark, I'm your mother.Copy !req
25. It's obviously a mistake,
she's not your mother.Copy !req
26. That's what I told her. She said I probably
just need time to get used to the idea.Copy !req
27. She gave me her phone number,
told me to call if I wanted to talk again.Copy !req
28. I don't want you to have
anything to do with this woman.Copy !req
29. She's gonna be hard to avoid.Copy !req
30. She said she just bought a house...Copy !req
31. in Smallville.Copy !req
32. She also said the agency that handled the
adoption was Metropolis United Charities.Copy !req
33. That's the same place
Chloe told me about.Copy !req
34. I thought the only adoption
they handled was mine.Copy !req
35. So did I.Copy !req
36. - Dad, tell me what happened back then.
- That's not important right now.Copy !req
37. Your mother's right. We need to get
this woman to back off.Copy !req
38. We don't want her making people curious
about where you came from.Copy !req
39. Mrs. Kent...Copy !req
40. I know what you're thinking:Copy !req
41. "This woman gave her baby up.Copy !req
42. What right does she have
to show up after so many years?"Copy !req
43. Well, the thought did occur to me.Copy !req
44. Look, Mrs. Dunlevy,
I'm sure you mean well.Copy !req
45. And I know you've gone through
a lot of trouble finding Clark...Copy !req
46. but he's not your child.Copy !req
47. Oh, I've done the research.Copy !req
48. My Lucas was the only baby turned
over to Metropolis United Charities...Copy !req
49. and Clark was the only child
that they ever placed.Copy !req
50. We are Clark's legal parents,
we raised him.Copy !req
51. Believe me, I'm not trying
to take Clark away from you.Copy !req
52. I just want a chance
to get to know him.Copy !req
53. Giving up Lucas was the worst thing
I've ever done.Copy !req
54. I didn't do it because I wanted to,
I did it because I had to.Copy !req
55. I sincerely hope that you
find Lucas someday.Copy !req
56. But I'm afraid I'm going to have
to ask you not to bother my family...Copy !req
57. or Clark ever again.Copy !req
58. No.Copy !req
59. Sure, Clark, you can use my computer.
Knock yourself out.Copy !req
60. You've been getting e-mails
from Rachel Dunlevy.Copy !req
61. You've been reading my e-mails?Copy !req
62. You promised me you'd stop
digging into my adoption.Copy !req
63. All I did was post a few notices
on adoption websites...Copy !req
64. to see if I could get some hits.
This Dunlevy woman responded.Copy !req
65. So you said, "Why don't you check out
my buddy Clark, he may be your son."Copy !req
66. You have to believe me,
I didn't tell her anything about you.Copy !req
67. So it's just a coincidence she shows up
in Smallville claiming to be my mom?Copy !req
68. She's here? Clark, what makes you
so sure that she's not the real thing?Copy !req
69. I'm not giving you
an exclusive on my life.Copy !req
70. You're not curious
she might be your mom?Copy !req
71. Why are you obsessed
about my mother?Copy !req
72. - Do I ask you questions about yours?
- I guess not.Copy !req
73. If you want to find somebody's mother,
find your own.Copy !req
74. I know where she is. The difference
is she's not interested in me.Copy !req
75. Since you may never speak to me again,
there's something might want to know.Copy !req
76. Metropolis United Charities
was founded by Lionel Luthor.Copy !req
77. I admit, I'm even more intrigued now
than when I got your note.Copy !req
78. But I'm still not sure what
this has to do with me.Copy !req
79. Well, I understand that you
and Clark are good friends.Copy !req
80. Mr. Kent has forbidden me
to speak to him.Copy !req
81. I thought you might be willing to talk
to Clark, ask him to give me a chance.Copy !req
82. Ms. Dunlevy, Jonathan Kent
doesn't exactly see me...Copy !req
83. as the ideal role model for his son.Copy !req
84. I wouldn't want to encourage Clark
to defy his father.Copy !req
85. Even if it meant giving him a chance
to know his real mother?Copy !req
86. I'm sorry, but it's just not appropriate
for me to get involved.Copy !req
87. I wasn't going to bring this up
unless I had to...Copy !req
88. but I once worked for your mother.
- You knew my mother?Copy !req
89. And your father.
He and I became very close.Copy !req
90. He got me pregnant and made me
give the child up for adoption.Copy !req
91. You're claiming that Clark...?Copy !req
92. That Clark and I...?Copy !req
93. He's your brother, Lex.Copy !req
94. Chloe. Hey, I've been looking
for you everywhere.Copy !req
95. What's wrong?Copy !req
96. Clark and I just had
a massive blowout.Copy !req
97. About what?Copy !req
98. Secrets, privacy, my pathological
inability to curb my curiosity.Copy !req
99. - How are you?
- Hey, we can talk about it later.Copy !req
100. No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry,
I didn't mean to dump on you.Copy !req
101. - If you can't dump on your friends...
- Exactly.Copy !req
102. So, what did you want to talk about?Copy !req
103. - His name's Henry Small.
- As in the Smallville Smalls?Copy !req
104. Our very own first family.Copy !req
105. Well, who's the hottie
hanging all over him?Copy !req
106. My mom.Copy !req
107. - Oh, I'm sorry, Lana.
- It's okay, you didn't know.Copy !req
108. I think he may be
my biological father.Copy !req
109. You okay?Copy !req
110. I think so.Copy !req
111. I want to find out everything
there is to know about him.Copy !req
112. I thought...Copy !req
113. maybe you could help.Copy !req
114. - But if you don't feel comfortable, it's...
- Actually, I'm flattered.Copy !req
115. It's nice that someone trusts me enough
with their big family secret.Copy !req
116. Then you'll do it?Copy !req
117. I can tell you where he went to college...Copy !req
118. how many outstanding
parking tickets he has...Copy !req
119. I can even pull up his dental records
and tell you if he flosses regularly.Copy !req
120. But if you want
to know who he is...Copy !req
121. I would suggest using the high-tech
research device called the doorbell.Copy !req
122. - Clark?
- Grab a sack, son.Copy !req
123. I just found out that Lionel Luthor
founded Metropolis United Charities.Copy !req
124. Why was he involved in my adoption?Copy !req
125. - Would someone tell me what's going on?
- Jonathan, he needs to know.Copy !req
126. All right. It was the day of
the meteor shower when I realized...Copy !req
127. that nothing was gonna be normal
around here again.Copy !req
128. What's happening, Jonathan?Copy !req
129. Martha?Copy !req
130. Teddy!Copy !req
131. Jonathan, look out!Copy !req
132. Help! Stop, please! I need help!Copy !req
133. - Are you all right?
- It's my son.Copy !req
134. - What about him? Is he hurt?
- He... I can't...Copy !req
135. Mister, calm down here.
Where is your son?Copy !req
136. He... He's...Copy !req
137. Give me a hand.Copy !req
138. What happened to him?
His hair is...Copy !req
139. Can't we go any faster?Copy !req
140. We're doing the best that we can.Copy !req
141. What are you carrying back there?
It's slowing us down.Copy !req
142. Hey, how's your son?Copy !req
143. He's in shock, but he'll survive.Copy !req
144. You saved him, acting so quickly.Copy !req
145. I'm glad I could help out.Copy !req
146. I'm sorry. I don't
even know your name.Copy !req
147. Jonathan Kent.Copy !req
148. Nice to meet you, Mr. Kent.
If there's ever anything I can do for you...Copy !req
149. please, call me.Copy !req
150. I mean that, Mr. Kent.Copy !req
151. Dad, you were a hero.Copy !req
152. I don't know why you thought
you had to keep that a secret from me.Copy !req
153. Ethan. Is there something
we can do for you?Copy !req
154. I'm sure you know there's a woman
in town claiming to be Clark's mother.Copy !req
155. Well, she's petitioned Judge Ross
to order a DNA test.Copy !req
156. - But that's crazy. She's not my mother.
- If that's true, this test will prove it, son.Copy !req
157. I can have somebody come out and take
the sample to Metropolis Genetics Lab.Copy !req
158. They can run the test in the morning,
we can get this thing over with quick.Copy !req
159. I'm sure you folks have
nothing to be afraid of.Copy !req
160. Not to mention, it's an eyesore.Copy !req
161. No. They're dumping there.Copy !req
162. Oh, come on.Copy !req
163. What do you mean, that's it?Copy !req
164. I don't care what
Lowell County Water and Power says...Copy !req
165. they are illegally dumping, and
I'm not gonna sit here... Hello? Hello?Copy !req
166. - Mr. Small?
- What?Copy !req
167. I'm sorry.Copy !req
168. I'm not taking on
any more law students right now.Copy !req
169. No, no, I'm not a law student.Copy !req
170. Wait, I know you.Copy !req
171. You do?Copy !req
172. Yeah, you run the coffee place
in town.Copy !req
173. Yeah, yeah, the Talon.
I don't think I've seen you there.Copy !req
174. And you never will. I boycott it.Copy !req
175. Do you have a thing against coffee?Copy !req
176. No, I've got a thing against Luthors.Copy !req
177. Lex Luthor's just a silent partner.Copy !req
178. That's what the Vichy said about Nazis.
Look what happened to France.Copy !req
179. I didn't catch your name.Copy !req
180. Lana Lang.Copy !req
181. You knew my mother.Copy !req
182. Where did you get this?Copy !req
183. I found it.Copy !req
184. Did you love her?Copy !req
185. What do you want me to say?Copy !req
186. It's ancient history, it doesn't matter.Copy !req
187. Henry, can you stop saving the world for
one minute and give me a hand, please?Copy !req
188. Okay, honey, I'll be right there.Copy !req
189. - Look, Lana...
- I think you might be my father.Copy !req
190. - Honey, are you coming?
- Yeah, I'll be in one second.Copy !req
191. Look, Lana, you've made a mistake.Copy !req
192. - But l...
- I have a family now.Copy !req
193. Please, don't bother me again.Copy !req
194. There. Now that didn't
hurt a bit, did it?Copy !req
195. I'll let you know.Copy !req
196. Dad...Copy !req
197. You had to do it, Clark. If we'd refused,
they'd have dragged us into court.Copy !req
198. What happens when they look
at his DNA under a microscope?Copy !req
199. If I even have DNA.Copy !req
200. That's why we have to make sure nobody
gets a chance to analyze that sample.Copy !req
201. This is it.Copy !req
202. There.Copy !req
203. Man, this Mission: Impossible
stuff is great...Copy !req
204. but other than my scintillating
conversational skills...Copy !req
205. I still don't understand
why you brought me along.Copy !req
206. I need your spit.Copy !req
207. You can relax. We switched
the sample, no one saw us.Copy !req
208. Clark, I'm sorry to have put
you through all this.Copy !req
209. It's not your fault, Dad. I guess
it just comes with the territory.Copy !req
210. Yeah. I'm gonna go
work on the combine.Copy !req
211. Everything's okay. Why does
Dad still seem upset?Copy !req
212. This has been tough on him.Copy !req
213. He always said making
a deal with the devil...Copy !req
214. was gonna come back to haunt us.
- Then why'd he do it?Copy !req
215. Come on, Mom.Copy !req
216. Why'd you need Lionel Luthor's
help in the first place?Copy !req
217. You have no idea
the kind of pressure we were under.Copy !req
218. We suddenly had this new
little person in our home.Copy !req
219. We didn't know what to do with you.
We were completely overwhelmed.Copy !req
220. Thank goodness
your mother was a pack rat.Copy !req
221. Sweetheart, he's not ours to keep.Copy !req
222. I just keep feeling there's
a reason he's here.Copy !req
223. He's exactly what I wished for
in the flower shop this morning.Copy !req
224. Hey. Since when did Martha Kent
believe in magic wands?Copy !req
225. Since the moment
I laid eyes on this little boy.Copy !req
226. Get him upstairs. Hurry, go on.Copy !req
227. Just a...Copy !req
228. Just a second.Copy !req
229. - Evening, Jonathan.
- Ethan.Copy !req
230. I saw what was left
of your truck out on Route 17.Copy !req
231. I wanted to stop by
and make sure you're all right.Copy !req
232. We're just a little banged up,
but we're fine.Copy !req
233. Look, I'm sure there are folks who need
your attention a lot more than we...Copy !req
234. - Who's the little fellow?
- He got away from me. He's strong.Copy !req
235. - That's...
- Clark.Copy !req
236. I thought my family name
would make a good first name.Copy !req
237. Deputy, I would like you to be the
first one in Smallville to meet our son.Copy !req
238. Adopted, of course. We just brought him
back from Metropolis this morning.Copy !req
239. I didn't know you folks
were planning to adopt.Copy !req
240. Oh, Ethan, you know us,
we like to keep to ourselves.Copy !req
241. But it's been in the works
for quite a while.Copy !req
242. Well, congratulations.Copy !req
243. It's nice to see something good
happen in the middle of all this tragedy.Copy !req
244. He was right.Copy !req
245. You were the one good thing
that happened that day.Copy !req
246. So you just made it up,
spur of the moment.Copy !req
247. I couldn't say we'd found you
in a corn field.Copy !req
248. Once the words came out, I knew
we'd have to back them up eventually.Copy !req
249. So we called Lionel Luthor, cashed in
that favor. He arranged everything.Copy !req
250. If everything worked out,
why'd you keep it secret?Copy !req
251. Hey, I hope I'm not interrupting
anything important.Copy !req
252. Not at all, Lex.Copy !req
253. Ever wish you had a big brother
to help you with your jump shot?Copy !req
254. I think I've managed to become
a pretty decent player on my own.Copy !req
255. Rachel Dunlevy came to see me.Copy !req
256. She says you and I have
a few chromosomes in common.Copy !req
257. My father's chromosomes, to be exact.Copy !req
258. You mean...?Copy !req
259. Personally, I think I got
all the looks in the family.Copy !req
260. I don't know what happened
between her and your father...Copy !req
261. but she's not my mother.
- Trust me, I'm as skeptical as you are.Copy !req
262. For all I know, this is an elaborate scheme
to win a paternity suit against my father.Copy !req
263. Did you ask him about it?Copy !req
264. I didn't want to make any accusations
until I had more facts.Copy !req
265. It's not hard to imagine.Copy !req
266. In the annals of extramarital exploits,
my father probably has his own chapter.Copy !req
267. It doesn't bother you? I mean, I know
how close you were to your mother.Copy !req
268. To the extent that it caused
my mother pain...Copy !req
269. sure, it bothers me.Copy !req
270. Unfortunately, not every marriage...Copy !req
271. is quite as Rockwellian
as Jonathan and Martha Kent's.Copy !req
272. Anyway, I told Ms. Dunlevy
that in the 21 st century...Copy !req
273. people shouldn't make claims like hers
without the DNA to back them up.Copy !req
274. So, what do you think, Clark?Copy !req
275. No chance we could be brothers?Copy !req
276. As cool as that would be,
Lex, we're not.Copy !req
277. Rachel.Copy !req
278. When the guard called and told me
you were down at the gate...Copy !req
279. I didn't believe him.
We had an agreement.Copy !req
280. I just got the results
from the DNA test.Copy !req
281. I don't know how, but you
did something to alter them.Copy !req
282. Did what? What are you
talking about?Copy !req
283. Clark Kent is our son,
and you know that!Copy !req
284. You haven't changed, Rachel.
You are still completely irrational.Copy !req
285. No, the only irrational thing that I ever did
was to let you rip my child from my arms.Copy !req
286. You were well-compensated
and well taken care of.Copy !req
287. You think money made up for
seven years in a psychiatric ward?Copy !req
288. You needed help.Copy !req
289. No, what I needed was
a home and a family.Copy !req
290. After you were through with me
that wasn't going to happen.Copy !req
291. Not with Lucas, not with anybody.Copy !req
292. Why didn't you
continue your treatment?Copy !req
293. I didn't need any treatment.
You just wanted me out of the way.Copy !req
294. Classic denial.Copy !req
295. Oh, this isn't over, Lionel.
I'm gonna expose you.Copy !req
296. Expose me? To whom?
My wife is dead. You know that.Copy !req
297. Are you still as beautiful, Rachel?Copy !req
298. Oh, you were lovely.Copy !req
299. You have to move on.Copy !req
300. Forget the past.Copy !req
301. If you need help, I'd be happy
to call Dr. Friedberg.Copy !req
302. I'm sure he'd be more than willing
to make room for you at the clinic.Copy !req
303. Ms. Dunlevy?Copy !req
304. Is everything all right?Copy !req
305. There.Copy !req
306. Wow, that is quite a catch.Copy !req
307. Took all my strength to pull that one in.
My dad even had to help me land it.Copy !req
308. You're lucky you've got
such a great father.Copy !req
309. I heard you and Chloe had a big fight.Copy !req
310. Don't worry, she didn't
give me any details.Copy !req
311. I assume that this is shrouded
in the usual Kent cloak of secrecy.Copy !req
312. Chloe promised not to look
into my adoption, and then she did.Copy !req
313. Now I've got a woman in town
claiming to be my mother.Copy !req
314. - Is there any chance?
- No, not in a million years.Copy !req
315. She just showed up
out of the blue?Copy !req
316. She ambushed me at school. "Hi, Clark,
I'm your mother. " I mean, who does that?Copy !req
317. Do you remember that guy
in the photo with my mom?Copy !req
318. I found out who he was. His name's
Henry Small. I went to his house.Copy !req
319. - How'd it go?
- Well...Copy !req
320. he hates the Talon, hates the Luthors,
compared me to the Nazis...Copy !req
321. and told me to never
come back again.Copy !req
322. That good, huh?Copy !req
323. - I'm sorry.
- It's okay.Copy !req
324. I have done pretty well
without a father this long...Copy !req
325. I don't know why I thought
I needed one now.Copy !req
326. I do.Copy !req
327. Lana, we're different. We don't get to
see our biological parents every day...Copy !req
328. and see a little piece of who we are
or who we may become.Copy !req
329. If I had a chance to get to know
my birth parents...Copy !req
330. I wouldn't give up just because the first
meeting didn't go the way I hoped.Copy !req
331. There.Copy !req
332. - No, no, no. You're okay.
- Where am I?Copy !req
333. You're at my house.Copy !req
334. I bought it with the money
your father gave me.Copy !req
335. I knew I'd need it one day,
so I never spent it.Copy !req
336. I'm fixing it up so that Clark
will feel at home here.Copy !req
337. I know how hard it must be.Copy !req
338. No, no. No, you don't.Copy !req
339. All those lost years.Copy !req
340. Martha Kent getting to
bake the birthday cakes.Copy !req
341. Martha Kent getting to dry his tears.Copy !req
342. So that gives you the right
to kidnap me?Copy !req
343. Believe me, I didn't want to do this,
but your father gave me no choice.Copy !req
344. Look, if my father's lying,
Clark really is my brother.Copy !req
345. I want to know just as much
as you do.Copy !req
346. How does holding me prisoner
help you?Copy !req
347. Because, Lex, either your father
tells the truth...Copy !req
348. or he's going to know
the pain of losing his son.Copy !req
349. What's wrong?Copy !req
350. Rachel Dunlevy.
She's kidnapped Lex.Copy !req
351. Oh, my God.Copy !req
352. If I don't call a press conference...Copy !req
353. announcing
that Clark's adoption was a sham...Copy !req
354. and that he's my illegitimate son,
she's...Copy !req
355. She's gonna kill Lex.Copy !req
356. Chloe, I'm so glad I found you.Copy !req
357. Okay, there's a sentence
I never thought I'd hear again.Copy !req
358. We both did and said things
that we regret.Copy !req
359. I know I did.Copy !req
360. Look, you have to believe that
I would burn my press pass...Copy !req
361. if I thought it would
come between us.Copy !req
362. No, you wouldn't. It's too much of who
you are, and right now I need it.Copy !req
363. If Rachel Dunlevy did buy a house,
she'll be listed with the county clerk.Copy !req
364. It's just gonna take a minute
to get a hit.Copy !req
365. Chloe, what I said about your mother,
I was way out of line.Copy !req
366. It's cool. We all have
family secrets, I guess.Copy !req
367. She left when I was 5.Copy !req
368. I came downstairs, and there
was my dad trying to make waffles.Copy !req
369. He never even really explained
why she left. It was weird.Copy !req
370. I'm sorry.Copy !req
371. It's hard thinking you weren't
good enough for someone to love.Copy !req
372. Don't ever think that.Copy !req
373. There is no record of Rachel Dunlevy.Copy !req
374. Try the name Lucas Luthor.Copy !req
375. Okay, you're gonna have to explain
that one to me later.Copy !req
376. Bingo. There's his address.Copy !req
377. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,
for coming on such short notice.Copy !req
378. I have an important announcement
to make that concerns my family.Copy !req
379. My son, Lex Luthor, has been kidnapped.Copy !req
380. I want to say to his abductor:Copy !req
381. I will never give in to your demands.Copy !req
382. - No.
- If you harm him...Copy !req
383. - No! No!
in any way...Copy !req
384. I will not rest...Copy !req
385. until you are hunted down
and locked away, this time forever.Copy !req
386. It's been the policy of my company
and my family never to negotiate...Copy !req
387. - Where are you going? No!
- Your father just killed you, Lex.Copy !req
388. Who are you?Copy !req
389. That's what I've been trying to tell you.
I'm not your son.Copy !req
390. No.Copy !req
391. Oh, no.Copy !req
392. - You need anything else, give me a shout.
- Thanks.Copy !req
393. Cute place, very colorful.Copy !req
394. Mr. Small.Copy !req
395. Call me Henry.Copy !req
396. Can I get you a coffee?Copy !req
397. - Of course, you wouldn't want a coffee.
- Regular coffee would be great.Copy !req
398. I got your letter.Copy !req
399. And yes, you did ambush me.Copy !req
400. But from the way you describe yourself,
it might just be a habit you got from me.Copy !req
401. So you are my father?Copy !req
402. I don't know.Copy !req
403. But I'm willing to find out.Copy !req
404. Rachel's been admitted to
a private psychiatric clinic.Copy !req
405. Even if she tries to explain what you did,
nobody will believe her.Copy !req
406. - I really feel sorry for her.
- We all do, son.Copy !req
407. I can't even imagine what it was like
giving up that baby.Copy !req
408. I'm just glad our own family
is still in one piece.Copy !req
409. Not even Lionel Luthor
could tear us apart.Copy !req
410. But Lionel helped us.Copy !req
411. Dad, why do you hate him so much?Copy !req
412. The morning he came by
with the adoption papers...Copy !req
413. I thought I'd never lay eyes
on him again.Copy !req
414. Mr. Kent.Copy !req
415. Mr. Luthor.Copy !req
416. You call me Lionel, please.Copy !req
417. Lionel.Copy !req
418. I think you'll find everything in order.Copy !req
419. Thank you.Copy !req
420. And thank you for bringing it out yourself.
You really didn't have to do that.Copy !req
421. We're taking Lex back
to Metropolis today.Copy !req
422. Hey, that's fantastic. I'm glad
your son's gonna be all right.Copy !req
423. Thank you. Thank you.Copy !req
424. There is one thing I'd like you
to do for me.Copy !req
425. - Yeah?
- I'm sure you've heard...Copy !req
426. the Ross brothers are having second
thoughts about selling me their factory.Copy !req
427. They don't want to sell to an outsider.
They're friends of yours, aren't they?Copy !req
428. - Yeah. Yeah, they are.
- Talk to them.Copy !req
429. Convince them that I only
have Smallville's best interests at heart.Copy !req
430. I think it would make a difference.Copy !req
431. I really don't think that's
really any of my business, Mr. Luthor.Copy !req
432. I understand.Copy !req
433. I'd be careful with that. I wouldn't
want the Department of Family Welfare...Copy !req
434. to find out young Clark's
adoption's a sham.Copy !req
435. Wait, are you threatening me?Copy !req
436. Of course not.
I'm just asking for a small favor.Copy !req
437. So you did it.Copy !req
438. You convinced the Rosses to sell.Copy !req
439. I helped the Luthors get
a foothold on this community.Copy !req
440. The smokestacks, the toxic dumping...Copy !req
441. all the people who were cheated,
including Pete's family...Copy !req
442. - It wouldn't have happened, if not for me.
- You couldn't have known.Copy !req
443. I should have known. I knew exactly
what kind of a man Lionel Luthor was.Copy !req
444. Why didn't you tell me?Copy !req
445. I knew you would do exactly what you're
doing now, which is blame yourself.Copy !req
446. - You were protecting me, it is my fault.
- No.Copy !req
447. You never believe that.Copy !req
448. This was my decision.
This is my fault.Copy !req
449. Mine alone.Copy !req
450. Lex, is that you?Copy !req
451. Still alive and kicking, Dad.
No thanks to you.Copy !req
452. You're a survivor, son.
I knew she wasn't gonna kill you.Copy !req
453. Not for lack of trying.Copy !req
454. I couldn't give in to her.
You must know that.Copy !req
455. Like you did all those years ago?Copy !req
456. I loved your mother
very deeply, Lex...Copy !req
457. but I was not a perfect husband.Copy !req
458. I strayed.Copy !req
459. If you've never been tempted,
I'm sure one day you will be.Copy !req
460. We're not talking about me, Dad.
We're talking about Rachel Dunlevy.Copy !req
461. Did she bear your illegitimate son
or not?Copy !req
462. I never knew she was pregnant.Copy !req
463. Then she reappeared one day
with a child she claimed was mine...Copy !req
464. demanding that I leave
your mother and marry her.Copy !req
465. So you bribed her to give
the child up for adoption.Copy !req
466. She was imbalanced.
She threatened me.Copy !req
467. Your mother was too sick
to burden her with a scandal.Copy !req
468. Your altruism is inspiring, Dad.Copy !req
469. I did what I thought
best for everyone.Copy !req
470. I had the child placed
with a suitable family.Copy !req
471. - Not the Kents?
- The Kents?Copy !req
472. - Don't be ridiculous.
- Then where is he?Copy !req
473. He...Copy !req
474. died...Copy !req
475. before his first birthday.Copy !req
476. Forgive me, Lex, I'm very tired.Copy !req
477. It's been a long day.Copy !req
478. Sure, Dad.Copy !req
