1. Hello? Is someone there?Copy !req
2. - Damn it, boy, what were you thinking?
- I'm sorry, Father. It won't happen again.Copy !req
3. What is the one rule
we live by in this house?Copy !req
4. Byron stays in the cellar.Copy !req
5. And why is that?Copy !req
6. Because Father knows
what's best for Byron.Copy !req
7. How the hell did you get out?Copy !req
8. I swear, you'd better give me
an answer right now, or I'm gonna...Copy !req
9. I pried open the lock.Copy !req
10. Get out again, boy, there will be
more than a tranquilizer in that gun.Copy !req
11. The sentiment's nice...Copy !req
12. but the fact that you found this
in a graveyard seems a little Amityville.Copy !req
13. I think it's romantic. I haven't
gotten a love letter since third grade.Copy !req
14. - Seems like a lost art.
- Not true, not true.Copy !req
15. This morning in trig, I intercepted
a note from a wrestler to a cheerleader.Copy !req
16. It wasn't exactly poetic,
but he definitely got his point across.Copy !req
17. - Who do you think wrote it?
- I have no idea.Copy !req
18. Hey, guys.Copy !req
19. - So, what's going on?
- Lana has a secret admirer.Copy !req
20. - It's nothing.
- What do you mean, nothing?Copy !req
21. What happened to romantic?Copy !req
22. Just let the boy read it.Copy !req
23. - It's a little mushy.
- I almost forgot.Copy !req
24. Clark Kent, the man of steel.Copy !req
25. I'll see you guys later.Copy !req
26. - Bye.
- Bye.Copy !req
27. If you ask me, it sounds more
like a stalker than a secret admirer.Copy !req
28. - Thanks.
- No problem.Copy !req
29. That's kind of personal.Copy !req
30. Go ahead and read it. You'll probably
agree with Clark that it's sappy.Copy !req
31. The imagery's a little naive, but the
meter's actually quite sophisticated.Copy !req
32. Who wrote this?Copy !req
33. Either an admirer or a psychopath,
depending on who you ask.Copy !req
34. That had a little edge to it,
is everything all right?Copy !req
35. Everyone's giving me a hard time about
the poem. I'm just a little defensive.Copy !req
36. Take me to youCopy !req
37. Imprison meCopy !req
38. For I never shall be free
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish meCopy !req
39. John Donne.
He's one of my favorites.Copy !req
40. If I didn't know better,
I'd say I found your Achilles' heel.Copy !req
41. I didn't realize you were so into poetry.Copy !req
42. Anyone who doesn't appreciate poetry...Copy !req
43. doesn't understand
that it's all about seduction.Copy !req
44. It's nice some people
appreciate artistic expression.Copy !req
45. It kind of raises the bar for
any other contenders, doesn't it, Clark?Copy !req
46. - I know things aren't great between us...
- I'm fine, Clark.Copy !req
47. Lana, I want to apologize
for ragging on the poem.Copy !req
48. Guess poetry's not for everybody.Copy !req
49. I was just surprised that you would show
Pete and Chloe and not show it to me.Copy !req
50. You can't expect me to share everything
if you're not going to be open with me.Copy !req
51. Don't you think it's weird? This guy's
sneaking around watching you.Copy !req
52. Come on, Clark. Tell me you've never
watched somebody from afar.Copy !req
53. So as you can see, sir...Copy !req
54. or maybe not
actually see in your case...Copy !req
55. it was an honest mistake...Copy !req
56. and one that I promise
won't ever happen again...Copy !req
57. as long as I'm working for you.Copy !req
58. Thank you, Tad.Copy !req
59. That was a very heartfelt, if
not interminably long-winded, apology.Copy !req
60. And I'm going to help
you keep that promise.Copy !req
61. Tad...Copy !req
62. your things will be mailed to you.Copy !req
63. Are you letting me go?Copy !req
64. Never lose that grasp of the obvious, Tad.
It's one of your strongest attributes.Copy !req
65. That's the fourth one
you've devoured this month.Copy !req
66. - Where you finding these people, Lex?
- Little schools, like Harvard and Yale.Copy !req
67. I spent hours going over résumés,
looking for the perfect fit.Copy !req
68. You mustn't be fooled by a résumé, Lex.Copy !req
69. You have to look into their eyes
to see if they're up to the challenge.Copy !req
70. I need your eyes to look for me, son.Copy !req
71. I see. So somehow the failure
of your assistants is my fault.Copy !req
72. Forget the self-pity, Lex,
I wasn't criticizing. I was critiquing.Copy !req
73. There's a difference.Copy !req
74. And if I recall, I didn't
ask for help. You offered.Copy !req
75. I'm glad to see your condition
hasn't softened your paternal side.Copy !req
76. My condition has nothing to do with it.Copy !req
77. You're not the master of your universe
anymore, and it's killing you.Copy !req
78. Just get me an assistant
who meets my criteria.Copy !req
79. - I don't think I would fit your criteria.
- Probably not, but nobody's perfect.Copy !req
80. At the sound of the opening bell on the
stock exchange floor Monday morning...Copy !req
81. LuthorCorp stock adjusted dramatically
after weeks of speculation as to...Copy !req
82. I couldn't listen to another word
of that droning either.Copy !req
83. - Who is that?
- It's Martha Kent.Copy !req
84. I hope I'm not disturbing you.Copy !req
85. No, no. It's a welcome interruption.Copy !req
86. I came by to pick up the produce check
from Lex. He usually leaves it out for me.Copy !req
87. I'm afraid my presence here has thrown
Lex's regimented routine into mild chaos.Copy !req
88. I'm sure he's happy to have you here,
even if he doesn't know how to say it.Copy !req
89. Your assumption's very generous.Copy !req
90. "The plummeting stock sent a ripple
through investment houses.Copy !req
91. CEO Lionel Luthor attributed the drop
to this quarter's anticipated deficit."Copy !req
92. It's a smoke screen, isn't it?Copy !req
93. To make investors nervous so when
LuthorCorp posts less impressive gains...Copy !req
94. the stock will have already adjusted.
- I had no idea Martha Kent...Copy !req
95. had such keen business acumen.Copy !req
96. I wonder if your talents aren't
being wasted on organic produce.Copy !req
97. I'm going to take that as a compliment.Copy !req
98. You should.Copy !req
99. I bought you this. At the used bookstore.Copy !req
100. Edgar Allan Poe.Copy !req
101. You really know
how to pick them, Mother.Copy !req
102. Well, I read a couple of pages.
I couldn't make heads or tails.Copy !req
103. I'm surprised.Copy !req
104. He writes about pain and suffering...Copy !req
105. and people being buried alive.Copy !req
106. Byron, I know you're upset,
but things are better this way.Copy !req
107. How can you let him do this to me?Copy !req
108. You have put your father
through enough.Copy !req
109. Just be glad things are back to normal.Copy !req
110. Normal kids aren't hunted
by their fathers.Copy !req
111. I don't want to hear another word.
You just stick to your books...Copy !req
112. and keep your mouth shut.Copy !req
113. Everything will be fine.Copy !req
114. What am I doing? This is crazy.Copy !req
115. Wait! I got your other poem.Copy !req
116. It was beautiful.Copy !req
117. You really think so?Copy !req
118. What's your name?Copy !req
119. Byron.Copy !req
120. - Like the poet?
- Like my great-uncle.Copy !req
121. But there's nothing poetic about him.Copy !req
122. Why do you leave me these poems?Copy !req
123. Because you inspire me.Copy !req
124. No, don't!Copy !req
125. Get away from her!Copy !req
126. Clark!Copy !req
127. Oh, my God.Copy !req
128. - Are you okay?
- Yes.Copy !req
129. Fine.Copy !req
130. I can't believe I passed out.Copy !req
131. I'm sorry I scared you.Copy !req
132. It's okay, Clark.Copy !req
133. You were protecting
a beautiful young lady.Copy !req
134. It was chivalrous.Copy !req
135. You're lucky to have a boyfriend
who cares so much about you.Copy !req
136. Clark's just a friend.Copy !req
137. An overprotective one.Copy !req
138. If I could write the beauty of your eyesCopy !req
139. And number all your gracesCopy !req
140. The age to come would say
"This poet liesCopy !req
141. Such heavenly touches
Ne'er touched earthly faces"Copy !req
142. That was beautiful.Copy !req
143. Which poet wrote that?Copy !req
144. Shakespeare.Copy !req
145. I can't imagine being home-schooled
and never seeing anybody.Copy !req
146. You don't miss what you never had.Copy !req
147. Seems like you don't get out much.
Are your parents pretty strict?Copy !req
148. They only want what's best for me.Copy !req
149. Oh, my God.
That's our milk delivery.Copy !req
150. - What time is it?
- Quarter to five.Copy !req
151. If my parents wake up...Copy !req
152. Do you want us to tell
your parents what happened?Copy !req
153. No, I'll be fine.Copy !req
154. Byron, hurry!Copy !req
155. I warned you not to leave, boy.Copy !req
156. No! No!Copy !req
157. Byron!Copy !req
158. - Go away!
- Come on!Copy !req
159. I'd better not catch you
around my son again!Copy !req
160. Get out before I shoot you
for trespassing!Copy !req
161. - Lionel Luthor offered you a job?
- I was just as surprised as you are.Copy !req
162. - What'd you tell him?
- That I wanted to discuss it with you.Copy !req
163. You know I've been thinking
about going back to work for a while.Copy !req
164. Why with him? You know he's got
an ulterior motive for everything.Copy !req
165. I know all about Lionel Luthor,
but we could use the money.Copy !req
166. And I could use
a bigger challenge in my life.Copy !req
167. Oh, I understand. Farm life's gotten
a little too boring for you, hasn't it?Copy !req
168. I didn't mean it like that.Copy !req
169. This is a chance for me
to put my education to use.Copy !req
170. Even at the risk of losing
our privacy here?Copy !req
171. You don't trust me to make that call?Copy !req
172. I want to do this.Copy !req
173. Martha...Copy !req
174. Clark?Copy !req
175. Lana, you two been out all night?Copy !req
176. No, it's not what you think.Copy !req
177. We met this kid and we think
his parents are abusing him.Copy !req
178. Mrs. Moore?Copy !req
179. I'm sorry to disturb you,
but I'd like to speak to your son.Copy !req
180. - I'm afraid that's not possible, sheriff.
- Where is he?Copy !req
181. Clark, let the sheriff handle this, please.Copy !req
182. He's not in any trouble.Copy !req
183. Look, I don't know what the hell's
going on here, sheriff...Copy !req
184. but our son is dead.Copy !req
185. He drowned out
in Crater Lake eight years ago.Copy !req
186. We just met him last night.Copy !req
187. My son says that you threatened him.Copy !req
188. I've never seen
these kids before in my life.Copy !req
189. Look, it's taken all these years
to get past this...Copy !req
190. and then you show up
and pull a prank like this.Copy !req
191. What kind of parent would raise a child
to do a wicked thing like that?Copy !req
192. We're awfully sorry.
Look, Jonathan, I think we should go.Copy !req
193. - They're lying.
- We saw him go in that house.Copy !req
194. - This is a very awkward situation.
- I know it is, Ethan.Copy !req
195. But if that young man's in trouble,
we wouldn't want it on our conscience.Copy !req
196. I'll get a warrant.Copy !req
197. It looks like your tortured artist is
a member of the dead poets society.Copy !req
198. The certificate of death was signed
by Dr. Emil Jenkins.Copy !req
199. It's gotta be fake.Copy !req
200. Not that I don't trust your judgment,
but is it possible that goth boy is...?Copy !req
201. I don't think a ghost could finish three
pieces of cake and two cappuccinos.Copy !req
202. I was just checking.
I mean, this is Smallville.Copy !req
203. I ran Dr. Jenkins' name through the
computer and found something.Copy !req
204. Eight years ago, he supervised a medical
trial over at Metron Pharmaceuticals.Copy !req
205. Let me guess, Byron was a participant.Copy !req
206. Yeah, they were all kids who
had exhibited antisocial behavior.Copy !req
207. But that doesn't sound like Byron,
he's so gentle.Copy !req
208. Could it be that our new Shakespeare
has stirred the heart of our young Juliet?Copy !req
209. It's nice to meet someone so honest...Copy !req
210. I don't have to guess
what they're thinking.Copy !req
211. - We have to start looking for Byron.
- We should see what the sheriff finds.Copy !req
212. Chopin? I always thought you found him
to be too sentimental.Copy !req
213. No, Lex, I find that he
sometimes lacks subtlety.Copy !req
214. Sometimes.Copy !req
215. I take it from your tone
you're angry with me.Copy !req
216. What transgression
have I committed now?Copy !req
217. I wasted yesterday
interviewing more prospects...Copy !req
218. only to find you've hired Mrs. Kent.Copy !req
219. - What's your angle, Dad?
- Angle?Copy !req
220. Martha Kent is a very capable woman.Copy !req
221. Unshakable honesty like hers...Copy !req
222. it's hard to come by.Copy !req
223. She just happens to be one of the few
pillars of this community who could...Copy !req
224. ingratiate a despised tycoon
to the citizens of Smallville.Copy !req
225. I hadn't thought of it in those terms.Copy !req
226. I suppose that is an unexpected benefit.Copy !req
227. I don't know what your sudden
interest is in the Kents...Copy !req
228. but I want you to stay away
from them. They mean a lot to me.Copy !req
229. And I wonder what they would think
of your trying to meddle in their affairs.Copy !req
230. You think if you're a very good boy,
they'll welcome you into their family?Copy !req
231. Well, it would certainly be a step up.Copy !req
232. You know, Lex, Zeus had a son...Copy !req
233. an adopted son, who thought
he could find a home among mortals.Copy !req
234. You know what happened
to the well-intentioned Prometheus?Copy !req
235. His dad had him chained to a rock and
his liver was eaten by vultures. Why?Copy !req
236. Prometheus was immortal, Lex.Copy !req
237. No matter how much he wanted
to escape the world he was born into...Copy !req
238. the world of the gods, he
never could. It wasn't possible.Copy !req
239. If I find out that you have any agenda
that could hurt the Kents...Copy !req
240. this amiable father-son détente
will come to an abrupt end.Copy !req
241. What happened to waiting
for the sheriff?Copy !req
242. I need to know if Byron's in here.Copy !req
243. You're a regular Dr. Doolittle.Copy !req
244. This place is like an NRA petting zoo.Copy !req
245. There's something under this rug.Copy !req
246. It's lead, that's why
I couldn't see through it.Copy !req
247. That's good to know. You ought to think
about publishing an instruction manual.Copy !req
248. Watch the door.Copy !req
249. Byron, what did they do to you?Copy !req
250. It's not what you think.Copy !req
251. I have to get you out of here.Copy !req
252. - How did you do that?
- Rusty lock. Come on!Copy !req
253. Don't! Last time I went out
during the day, I hurt my dad!Copy !req
254. No one deserves
to be locked up like this.Copy !req
255. You don't understand!Copy !req
256. Trust me, Byron.
I understand more than you know.Copy !req
257. No!Copy !req
258. Leave me alone!Copy !req
259. Byron, you okay?Copy !req
260. You should have listened to me.Copy !req
261. What are you looking at?Copy !req
262. - Byron, it's okay.
- Get away from me!Copy !req
263. Pete?Copy !req
264. Pete, I saw your mom downstairs,
are you all right?Copy !req
265. Yeah.Copy !req
266. The doctors say
it's a hairline fracture...Copy !req
267. which is ironic because it hurts
everywhere else except my hairline.Copy !req
268. Oh, sweetie.Copy !req
269. Being part of this family should come
with its own group health insurance.Copy !req
270. I thought we agreed you were gonna
wait for Sheriff Ethan.Copy !req
271. Dad, they had Byron locked in
the basement, chained to the wall.Copy !req
272. When Clark carried him out,
he went Jekyll and Hyde on us.Copy !req
273. - I tried to stop him.
- You tried?Copy !req
274. How big of a change
are we talking about here?Copy !req
275. You really shouldn't be here.Copy !req
276. My husband is out looking for Byron,
but he'll be back soon.Copy !req
277. My son feels responsible.Copy !req
278. We want to help.Copy !req
279. You just...Copy !req
280. You can't imagine how hard it was
for both of us.Copy !req
281. You probably think we're
horrible parents.Copy !req
282. When I took Byron out into the light,
why did he change?Copy !req
283. It was one of the side effects
of the drug.Copy !req
284. He can't be out in the sun.Copy !req
285. I wish we'd never gotten
involved in that mess.Copy !req
286. They promised...Copy !req
287. that the drug
would make him better...Copy !req
288. would make him normal.Copy !req
289. There's gotta be somebody somewhere
that can help your son.Copy !req
290. We tried everything.Copy !req
291. Dr. Jenkins watched six other boys die...Copy !req
292. trying to reverse the side effects.Copy !req
293. They had Byron hooked up
to all those machines...Copy !req
294. like he was some sort of alien.Copy !req
295. Is that why you faked
his death certificate?Copy !req
296. We didn't know what to do.Copy !req
297. Finally, we locked him
in the cellar.Copy !req
298. He cried, for days.
He didn't understand...Copy !req
299. why we had to keep him down here.Copy !req
300. We felt like the monsters.Copy !req
301. If I get Byron out of the sun,
will he change back?Copy !req
302. Yeah.Copy !req
303. He's so strong now, I don't know
how anybody could do that.Copy !req
304. I just got back from seeing Pete. He told
me what happened. Thanks for the call.Copy !req
305. - Look, Lana, l...
- Why did you lie to me, Clark?Copy !req
306. Byron's my friend, and I wanted to help.
You cut me out.Copy !req
307. - I didn't want you to get hurt.
- Is that it, or don't you trust me?Copy !req
308. - You haven't seen Byron, have you?
- No.Copy !req
309. But if I had, you'd know already.
I'd have been honest with you.Copy !req
310. I think I figured out why our would-be
Shakespeare went pro-wrestler on you.Copy !req
311. Jeez, is it just me,
or did it get cold in here?Copy !req
312. What'd you find?Copy !req
313. The drug Byron was given during the
medical trials targeted his adrenal system.Copy !req
314. It says they were looking for a cure.
We need to track down the company.Copy !req
315. It's too late. Metron was shut down
before they even finished their research.Copy !req
316. Why would they do that?Copy !req
317. I don't know. Maybe Clark
should ask his mom's new boss.Copy !req
318. Lionel Luthor owns Metron.Copy !req
319. Just one of the many
LuthorCorp subsidiaries...Copy !req
320. that promises a brighter future.Copy !req
321. I'll talk to Lex.Copy !req
322. I'd love to help you, but Pete sent out
an SOS for his PlayStation 2. Good luck.Copy !req
323. - Where are you going?
- To look for Byron.Copy !req
324. Wait, Lana. My dad, Mr. Moore and half
the sheriff's department are searching.Copy !req
325. - So I should stay here and pour coffee?
- I'm saying you should be careful.Copy !req
326. Byron's not the same guy.
If you see him, don't get too close.Copy !req
327. Call someone.Copy !req
328. Byron.Copy !req
329. It's me, Lana.
I want to help you.Copy !req
330. I was down there for eight years,
I'm not going back.Copy !req
331. You could hurt people like this.
The Byron I met wouldn't want that.Copy !req
332. I know who did this to you.
It was LuthorCorp.Copy !req
333. Clark's talking to Luthor's son.
They can find a cure.Copy !req
334. There is no cure!Copy !req
335. - Byron, no!
- I want you!Copy !req
336. They made me into someone
no one can love.Copy !req
337. Not even you!Copy !req
338. Another mark on the Luthor name.Copy !req
339. My father's leaving me quite a legacy.Copy !req
340. You might give your mom a heads up.Copy !req
341. If she's gonna work for my father,
this is what she's getting into.Copy !req
342. My mother can take care of herself, Lex.Copy !req
343. Besides, I haven't seen her
this excited in a long time.Copy !req
344. To tell you the truth, Clark,
I was a little surprised...Copy !req
345. considering my offers to ease
your family's financial situation...Copy !req
346. have been
met with a resounding no...Copy !req
347. it stung a little to see her name
on my father's payroll.Copy !req
348. To be honest, it wasn't a unanimous
decision at the Kent household.Copy !req
349. My father's the poster boy
for family strife.Copy !req
350. I'm sorry it's spreading.Copy !req
351. Look at it this way, Lex, at least
my father's not upset with you this time.Copy !req
352. I'll look into Metron, see where my
father's hiding the proverbial bodies.Copy !req
353. I have to head over to the plant. Some
Luthors actually have to work for a living.Copy !req
354. Wow, I didn't realize the traffic
in Smallville had gotten so bad.Copy !req
355. It's my father.
I hope your mom likes helicopters.Copy !req
356. My family doesn't fly much.Copy !req
357. Trust me, that's about to change.Copy !req
358. I'll talk to you later, Clark.Copy !req
359. Watch your head.Copy !req
360. All right!Copy !req
361. - It's this one here.
- What?Copy !req
362. This one.Copy !req
363. First time in a helicopter, Martha?Copy !req
364. I wasn't expecting a trip to Metropolis
on my first day.Copy !req
365. All right, Bob, we're off!Copy !req
366. Yes, sir.Copy !req
367. - What's happening, Bob?
- I don't know!Copy !req
368. What's happening?Copy !req
369. Bob?Copy !req
370. Oh, my God!Copy !req
371. - What is it?
- We have to get out of here! Come on!Copy !req
372. Martha!Copy !req
373. - Luthor!
- Who the hell are you?Copy !req
374. Oh, no!Copy !req
375. You did this to me!Copy !req
376. Did what?Copy !req
377. What are you talking about?Copy !req
378. I don't want to have to hurt you, Byron.Copy !req
379. - We gotta get you out of the light.
- No! You can't stop me!Copy !req
380. Clark!Copy !req
381. Clark?Copy !req
382. It's okay, Byron.Copy !req
383. You're gonna be all right.Copy !req
384. Clark.Copy !req
385. Hey, I brought you some light reading.Copy !req
386. They're a lost art form.Copy !req
387. I don't remember our fight,
but I cannot believe I didn't hurt you.Copy !req
388. Some people are just lucky.Copy !req
389. - Hey, how's the wrist?
- It'll be better in a couple of days.Copy !req
390. - I can't believe l...
- Hey, don't worry about it.Copy !req
391. I know it wasn't you.Copy !req
392. You were brave to come and find me.Copy !req
393. A friend warned me to be careful.
I should have listened to him.Copy !req
394. Let me see your hand.Copy !req
395. - I heard what happened. Are you okay?
- I'm relatively unscathed...Copy !req
396. thanks to Martha and Clark.Copy !req
397. Clark?Copy !req
398. He's a rather extraordinary young man,
don't you think?Copy !req
399. Hi, Lex. I spoke to the foundation...Copy !req
400. and they can transfer the funds
into the new account.Copy !req
401. Seven hours on the clock, and you're
already laundering money for my father?Copy !req
402. I'm convincing him to fund new research
into Byron Moore's condition. You okay?Copy !req
403. I'm sure my father informed you
LuthorCorp is not in the charity business.Copy !req
404. I did, I did.Copy !req
405. Then I explained that he'll spend less
helping this boy live a normal life...Copy !req
406. than he would on advertising to restore
consumer confidence in LuthorCorp.Copy !req
407. The papers will be here tomorrow
for you to sign.Copy !req
408. - See you in the morning.
- All right.Copy !req
409. Lex...Copy !req
410. I can feel your smirk from here.Copy !req
411. Better watch it, Dad...Copy !req
412. or your new executive assistant
might start rearranging all your priorities.Copy !req
413. You pulled one of your trademark
disappearing acts last night.Copy !req
414. I figured you could use
some time alone with Byron.Copy !req
415. Sonnets? Not exactly your usual reading.Copy !req
416. Byron was really into them.
I thought maybe I could learn something.Copy !req
417. What'd you think?Copy !req
418. They really weren't for me.Copy !req
419. An honest answer. I like that.Copy !req
420. I'm sorry for not being straight with you
from the beginning.Copy !req
421. It's okay.Copy !req
422. When I confronted Byron,
I got so scared.Copy !req
423. First person I thought of was you.Copy !req
424. Really?Copy !req
425. I thought, "If Clark was here,
he'd know what to do."Copy !req
426. Thought I could save him.
I just ended up making things worse.Copy !req
427. You were trying to help a friend,
there's no harm in that.Copy !req
428. I hope Byron's gonna be okay.Copy !req
429. It doesn't bother you that he's so...?Copy !req
430. Different?Copy !req
431. If you really like someone,
you accept every part of them.Copy !req
432. But you can't do that until they're willing
to share every part with you.Copy !req
433. I think people like Byron...Copy !req
434. He keeps a part of himself hidden
so he doesn't scare people away.Copy !req
435. If you want to get close to someone,
you have to take that risk.Copy !req
436. What if the risk is too big to take?Copy !req
437. Then you might miss out on something
that could be pretty amazing.Copy !req
