1. That which is done out of love
always takes place beyond good and evil.Copy !req
2. Yeah. Have my helicopter ready
first thing in the morning.Copy !req
3. I'm going back to Metropolis.Copy !req
4. No, no, I'll be alone. I suspect...Copy !req
5. Martha Kent is no longer
in my employ.Copy !req
6. Who's there?Copy !req
7. If this is someone's idea of a joke,
I'm not amused.Copy !req
8. Is that you?Copy !req
9. Didn't I make it clear,
the conversation is over.Copy !req
10. Jonathan Kent...Copy !req
11. put the gun down
and step out of the truck.Copy !req
12. Keep your hands where I can see them.Copy !req
13. Drop it.Copy !req
14. Away from the vehicle, sir.Copy !req
15. Away from the vehicle!Copy !req
16. Everything's gonna be fine. Just keep
your hands where we can see them.Copy !req
17. Ethan.Copy !req
18. - What's going on?
- Jonathan...Copy !req
19. as a friend, don't say another word
until you get yourself a lawyer.Copy !req
20. You have the right to remain silent
and refuse to answer questions.Copy !req
21. Anything you say may be used
against you in a court of law.Copy !req
22. You have the right to consult an attorney
and to have an attorney present...Copy !req
23. Dad, how are you doing?Copy !req
24. I'm fine, other than a splitting headache.Copy !req
25. Any word on how Lionel Luthor's doing?Copy !req
26. He was rushed into surgery, Jonathan.
He may not make it.Copy !req
27. How about the gun they found
in my truck?Copy !req
28. The police are testing it now.
It's the same caliber Lionel was shot with.Copy !req
29. Clark, that was not my gun.Copy !req
30. I have no idea how it wound up
in my hands.Copy !req
31. - Dad, what happened last night?
- Well, I was out running some errands.Copy !req
32. I stopped by the Wild Coyote for a beer.Copy !req
33. When I got in my truck,
everything started to go woozy on me.Copy !req
34. How many did you have?Copy !req
35. Martha, I had half a beer.Copy !req
36. I promise, but...Copy !req
37. next thing I know, I'm out on the side
of Highway 91. I got...Copy !req
38. the police spotlight shining
in my face, it's raining.Copy !req
39. We need to get a lawyer. I'm gonna call
my father and ask him to take your case.Copy !req
40. Martha, that man has never believed
in me before. I don't see why...Copy !req
41. an attempted-murder charge
is gonna change that.Copy !req
42. Well, Lana told me Henry Small
used to be a criminal attorney.Copy !req
43. Well, he certainly wouldn't be
intimidated by the Luthors.Copy !req
44. Sorry, Martha, but you and Clark
are gonna have to leave now.Copy !req
45. Dad, no matter what it takes,
I'm gonna find out who did this.Copy !req
46. Yeah.Copy !req
47. I just got in from Metropolis.
Where is he?Copy !req
48. In surgery. He's still in critical condition.Copy !req
49. If the downstairs maid hadn't been
awakened by the shot, he'd be dead.Copy !req
50. I want round-the-clock security.
Whoever shot him might still be out there.Copy !req
51. You can save the concerned-son routine,
Lex. I have everything under control.Copy !req
52. The loyal dog sitting watch at master's
door, secretly hoping he doesn't make it?Copy !req
53. As I recall, you almost let him die once.Copy !req
54. Who's to say you didn't
try to finish the job?Copy !req
55. God knows, after yesterday...Copy !req
56. you'd have enough reason
to want him dead.Copy !req
57. You know what I find so amusing, is you
believe my father is grooming you.Copy !req
58. It's unfortunate that they already
have a suspect in custody.Copy !req
59. I can't think of a person with a better
motive for killing your father than you.Copy !req
60. I'm sorry about your father, Clark,
but I'm afraid I can't represent him.Copy !req
61. I don't understand. Why?Copy !req
62. I'm not the right man for this case.Copy !req
63. From everything I know about you,
you're perfect for this case.Copy !req
64. - I can make some referrals.
- They don't need a list of names.Copy !req
65. They need someone they can trust.Copy !req
66. I'm sorry, Lana.Copy !req
67. My decision's final.Copy !req
68. Just when I thought I was
getting to know him.Copy !req
69. Looks like we need
to find another lawyer.Copy !req
70. Clark...Copy !req
71. there's something I have to tell you.Copy !req
72. I went by the mansion yesterday...Copy !req
73. to drop off the Talon's
quarterly tax bills, and...Copy !req
74. your dad was there.Copy !req
75. What was he doing?Copy !req
76. Yelling at Lionel Luthor.Copy !req
77. No, I want you out of our lives,
once and for all.Copy !req
78. You're jumping to conclusions, Mr. Kent.
It was simply a token of appreciation.Copy !req
79. I think it was quite a bit more than that.Copy !req
80. It's all relative, isn't it?Copy !req
81. I mean, a Roger Dubuis watch
from me is equivalent...Copy !req
82. to a Whitman's Sampler from you.Copy !req
83. Condescending son of a...Copy !req
84. The worst thing that happened
to my family...Copy !req
85. was getting involved with yours.Copy !req
86. I seem to recall that the benefits
to our families were mutual.Copy !req
87. Are you forgetting the circumstances
of Clark's adoption?Copy !req
88. You poison everything you touch.Copy !req
89. This town would be better off
if you weren't in it.Copy !req
90. But you're as much to blame for that
as I am, aren't you?Copy !req
91. Martha was worried about that.Copy !req
92. She thought you wouldn't be big enough
to let her live her own life.Copy !req
93. You stay away from Martha...Copy !req
94. or I promise you, you will regret it.Copy !req
95. He threatened him, Clark.Copy !req
96. My dad told me he was running errands.
Why would he lie to me?Copy !req
97. Look, the sheriff came by earlier...Copy !req
98. I told him what I just told you.Copy !req
99. I didn't want to, but I couldn't lie.Copy !req
100. It's okay. I mean, you know my dad
would never try to kill anybody.Copy !req
101. Right?Copy !req
102. He was angry, Clark, but I know him.
And there's no way.Copy !req
103. Thanks.Copy !req
104. Mom?Copy !req
105. What's going on?Copy !req
106. They have a search warrant.Copy !req
107. - Martha, can I have a word with you?
- Yeah.Copy !req
108. Found this watch on your bedroom floor.
Is it yours?Copy !req
109. It was a gift.Copy !req
110. From who?Copy !req
111. Lionel Luthor.Copy !req
112. "To Martha,
with deepest affection, L.L."Copy !req
113. I was gonna give it back.Copy !req
114. I knew if Jonathan saw it,
he would be furious...Copy !req
115. so I hid it in my dresser.
- Well, looks like he found it.Copy !req
116. Ethan, you've known Jonathan
since high school.Copy !req
117. I can't let my friendship
interfere with my job.Copy !req
118. - You gotta admit, this looks like motive.
- He found a watch and smashed it.Copy !req
119. That doesn't mean he's a killer.Copy !req
120. He also had an argument
with Lionel yesterday.Copy !req
121. - What?
- Yeah.Copy !req
122. Lana was there. She saw it.Copy !req
123. It was so heated, Lionel's assistant
called getting a restraining order.Copy !req
124. Way I figure, he was still hot under the
collar when he got to the Wild Coyote.Copy !req
125. Bartender told me he got pretty drunk.Copy !req
126. Hey, Mike...Copy !req
127. why don't you give me a double shot
of that tequila?Copy !req
128. Wait a minute, Dad said
he only had one beer.Copy !req
129. I administered his blood-alcohol
test myself, son.Copy !req
130. He was at 2.0.Copy !req
131. That's quite a bit more than one beer.Copy !req
132. From the sound of things,
he was really spoiling for a fight.Copy !req
133. Lionel Luthor's a lying, miserable
son of a bitch.Copy !req
134. You won't get any arguments here.Copy !req
135. - Again.
- I don't think that's a good idea.Copy !req
136. All right, then why don't you
sell me the whole bottle.Copy !req
137. - I'm not supposed to do that, Jonathan.
- Come on, Mike.Copy !req
138. I know we've been friends a long time.Copy !req
139. Nobody's gonna know.Copy !req
140. Is that you?Copy !req
141. Didn't I make it clear?
The conversation is over.Copy !req
142. We have eyewitnesses...Copy !req
143. who saw Jonathan's truck leaving
the mansion after they heard gunshots.Copy !req
144. Forensics found powder residue
on Jonathan's hand.Copy !req
145. I wish there were another explanation.Copy !req
146. But now he's our only suspect.Copy !req
147. What exactly are we looking for?Copy !req
148. The police already checked
this whole area.Copy !req
149. Yeah, we have an advantage they don't.Copy !req
150. Are you doing the eye thing?Copy !req
151. Hey, I need you to check
my back yard sometime.Copy !req
152. I buried a jar of quarters when I was 10.
Never could find it.Copy !req
153. They found my dad's truck
right about here.Copy !req
154. Did you find something?Copy !req
155. Yeah, it's a bullet.Copy !req
156. We need to get the sheriff
out here to dig it out.Copy !req
157. I don't mean to rain on
your CSI parade...Copy !req
158. but the only thing that proves
is that somebody shot a shed.Copy !req
159. The sheriff said he found powder residue
on my dad's hand.Copy !req
160. My dad said he'd never
seen that gun before.Copy !req
161. So? What does that mean?Copy !req
162. Whoever shot Lionel drugged my dad
and followed him until he pulled over.Copy !req
163. If that bullet came from the gun
that shot Lionel...Copy !req
164. maybe we can convince the police
that my dad is being framed.Copy !req
165. Even though we removed the bullet,
kidney damage slowed his metabolism.Copy !req
166. He's in a coma.Copy !req
167. What are his chances?Copy !req
168. His higher brain functions
are shutting down.Copy !req
169. If he doesn't regain consciousness
in the next 24 hours...Copy !req
170. he won't make it. I'm sorry.Copy !req
171. Sheriff Ethan...Copy !req
172. can I talk to you for a minute?
- Excuse me, sheriff.Copy !req
173. What is it, Clark?Copy !req
174. I found a bullet in the shack
where you arrested my father.Copy !req
175. My men went over that area
with a microscope.Copy !req
176. Well, they must have missed it.Copy !req
177. Someone put that gun in my dad's hand
and fired it.Copy !req
178. Or he squeezed off a round while he was
parked there drinking...Copy !req
179. or it could be from a different weapon.Copy !req
180. Whoever's trying to set up my dad
doesn't want you to find that bullet.Copy !req
181. I don't know what it'll prove,
but I'll have it tested.Copy !req
182. Sheriff, I was wondering
if we could talk.Copy !req
183. My name's Dominic Santori.
I work for Lionel Luthor.Copy !req
184. - Clark, would you excuse us?
- It's okay. He can stay.Copy !req
185. I don't think his father shot Mr. Luthor.Copy !req
186. But I'm pretty sure I know who did.Copy !req
187. All right, Lex...Copy !req
188. what's so urgent that you insisted
I fly in for a face-to-face.Copy !req
189. I'm missing Domingo's La Bohème.Copy !req
190. Well, consider this a curtain call
on our own private opera, Dad.Copy !req
191. Would you ask your Seeing Eye dog
to wait outside?Copy !req
192. Anything you have to say,
you can say in front of Dominic.Copy !req
193. A representative from
an offshore shell company...Copy !req
194. who bears an uncanny resemblance
to Mr. Santori here...Copy !req
195. has been quietly approaching LexCorp
employees and buying their voting shares.Copy !req
196. Is that so?Copy !req
197. I was under the impression
they had no intention of selling.Copy !req
198. What'd you get on them?Copy !req
199. Now, now, Lex, don't be a sore loser.Copy !req
200. I'm just realigning your priorities.Copy !req
201. Your attempt to build LexCorp
was at the expense of our mutual goals.Copy !req
202. The only thing we share
is a mutual enmity.Copy !req
203. This father-son reconciliation act was just
a smoke screen to buy out my company.Copy !req
204. If you were ready to run LexCorp, there's
no way I could have taken it from you.Copy !req
205. Look at this as an opportunity for us
to work together again, father and son.Copy !req
206. When I broke away, I swore I'd
never be under your thumb again.Copy !req
207. It was my hope that you'll stay
and rise to the challenge.Copy !req
208. Your ego wouldn't allow it.Copy !req
209. I'll fight you on this, and I'll win.Copy !req
210. You better have something stronger
than words to back up those threats...Copy !req
211. because as of this moment,
you are just another employee.Copy !req
212. All Lex had to do
was wait until Lionel was alone.Copy !req
213. Didn't I make it clear?
The conversation is over.Copy !req
214. After he shot him,
Lex could have framed Mr. Kent.Copy !req
215. And then he drove his girlfriend
to Metropolis, a convenient alibi.Copy !req
216. Thank you, Mr. Santori.
I'll certainly look into that.Copy !req
217. Excuse me.Copy !req
218. I know Lex and his dad have problems,
but it's hard to believe he'd do that.Copy !req
219. Face it, Clark, in your heart...Copy !req
220. you've always known
what Lex is capable of.Copy !req
221. Hey.Copy !req
222. Are you okay?Copy !req
223. Sometimes being an objective journalist
really sucks.Copy !req
224. I can imagine.Copy !req
225. I still can't believe
Henry didn't take Mr. Kent's case.Copy !req
226. Okay, usually when I do this,
people seem to get really mad at me.Copy !req
227. But I found it odd that your dad passed
up an opportunity to take on a Luthor...Copy !req
228. so I ran a search on his legal history.Copy !req
229. And since you don't seem to be
freaking out, I guess I should continue?Copy !req
230. If it helps explain why he won't
defend Mr. Kent, then I wanna know.Copy !req
231. Okay, it turns out that Mr. Small was a
top white-collar criminal defense lawyer.Copy !req
232. He and his firm did a lot of business
with, surprise, surprise, LuthorCorp.Copy !req
233. Maybe he considered the Kent case
a conflict of interest.Copy !req
234. As opposed to all the other times
he's taken on Lionel and his buddies?Copy !req
235. This is interesting, though.Copy !req
236. LuthorCorp filed a complaint against
Henry Small...Copy !req
237. that got him fired from his firm.Copy !req
238. Okay, so that explains why
he might hate the Luthors...Copy !req
239. but it doesn't explain
why he won't take the case.Copy !req
240. You know, Lana, my computer
only spits out cold, hard facts.Copy !req
241. If you want explanations,
you're gonna have to go to the source.Copy !req
242. I understand.Copy !req
243. Very well, doctor, keep me posted.Copy !req
244. Dominic told me you got in a fight
with your father before he got shot.Copy !req
245. Why didn't you tell the police?Copy !req
246. So now you're implying I
pulled the trigger?Copy !req
247. It's not like I haven't seen you
shoot someone before.Copy !req
248. Get out of here before you
say something you'll regret.Copy !req
249. I'm not going anywhere,
not until I get some answers.Copy !req
250. Are you trying to frame my dad?Copy !req
251. After all this time, I thought you knew me
better than the average tabloid reader.Copy !req
252. If you don't start trusting me,
what else am I to think?Copy !req
253. Stay out of it, Clark.Copy !req
254. - My dad's life is at stake here.
- So is my father's!Copy !req
255. Goodbye, Clark.Copy !req
256. Sweetheart...Copy !req
257. how are you holding up?Copy !req
258. You know, it's funny
how being locked up can...Copy !req
259. give you time to reflect
on all the mistakes you've made.Copy !req
260. Why didn't you tell me
you had a fight with Lionel?Copy !req
261. - Because I was angry.
- At me?Copy !req
262. No, at myself.Copy !req
263. I was jealous.Copy !req
264. When I found that watch...Copy !req
265. it reminded me of all the things
I couldn't give you.Copy !req
266. For the first time,
it felt like I was losing you.Copy !req
267. Martha, I am so sorry.Copy !req
268. For what?Copy !req
269. I'm sorry for not having faith in us.Copy !req
270. I'm sorry for giving in to
my own petty fears.Copy !req
271. And all it takes is one...Copy !req
272. reckless moment to ruin everything.Copy !req
273. Jonathan, you didn't shoot Lionel.Copy !req
274. No, I didn't shoot Lionel.Copy !req
275. But I...Copy !req
276. I let my anger get the best of me.Copy !req
277. I haven't exactly kept it a secret how
Jonathan Kent feels about the Luthors.Copy !req
278. What jury could possibly
believe me now?Copy !req
279. I know this place.Copy !req
280. My brother came here all the time.
Word was they never checked IDs.Copy !req
281. How'd they keep it open?Copy !req
282. Good luck.Copy !req
283. Connections.Copy !req
284. Well, if someone did drug my dad, this
would have been the only place to do it.Copy !req
285. I don't know what you kids heard,
but we don't serve minors in here.Copy !req
286. I just want to ask a few questions.
My name's Clark Kent, Jonathan's son.Copy !req
287. Jonathan.Copy !req
288. Listen, I'm sorry about what happened.Copy !req
289. Do you remember if he was
talking to anyone the other night?Copy !req
290. He was talking to everybody,
blowing off steam.Copy !req
291. Sounded like he had a major run-in
with Lionel Luthor.Copy !req
292. Sheriff said he bought
a bottle of tequila from you.Copy !req
293. Yeah, I wish I hadn't done it now.Copy !req
294. The cops want me to testify.Copy !req
295. I could lose my liquor license.Copy !req
296. He never drinks more than two beers.
Did someone put something in his drink?Copy !req
297. Nobody had to put anything in his drink
the way he was knocking them back.Copy !req
298. Listen, I know you don't
wanna hear this...Copy !req
299. but Jonathan said he was gonna
take care of Lionel, once and for all.Copy !req
300. - He'd never say that.
- I've known him since high school.Copy !req
301. He's always had a temper.Copy !req
302. There's no doubt in my mind he did it.Copy !req
303. You're just as bad as your old man.Copy !req
304. Clark, let him go, man.Copy !req
305. Clark, let him go! Be cool.Copy !req
306. The guy's lying. He's involved. I think
he's the one who spiked my dad's drink.Copy !req
307. Clark, look, I'm on your side...Copy !req
308. but putting a bartender through
spin cycle isn't the thing to do now.Copy !req
309. I know. I'm sorry.Copy !req
310. Pete, look out!Copy !req
311. - You all right?
- Yeah, I think so.Copy !req
312. But you must have definitely
ticked someone off.Copy !req
313. Clark, I heard you had a narrow escape.Copy !req
314. What do you care?Copy !req
315. I think this may be connected
to my father's shooting.Copy !req
316. - I warned you to stay out of this, Clark.
- Why?Copy !req
317. - To control the situation?
- I'm not controlling anything.Copy !req
318. I don't know who to believe anymore.Copy !req
319. - Dominic made quite an impression.
- This isn't about Dominic.Copy !req
320. He's asked the hospital staff
to keep me away from my father.Copy !req
321. - Why do you think that is?
- Probably to protect him.Copy !req
322. Or himself.Copy !req
323. If my father regains consciousness,
he may be able to identify who shot him.Copy !req
324. You think Dominic's involved?Copy !req
325. Why would he turn against Lionel?Copy !req
326. Because the decision to buy out LexCorp
affects him as much as it does me.Copy !req
327. - Something stronger than words
to back up those threats, son...Copy !req
328. because as of this moment,
you are just another employee.Copy !req
329. I'm going to Metropolis.Copy !req
330. When I get back, I want you gone.Copy !req
331. You never told me you wanted Lex back.Copy !req
332. I thought it was assumed.Copy !req
333. I care about this company. I can't
believe you're giving Lex another chance.Copy !req
334. I gave Lex a taste of independence...Copy !req
335. to demonstrate the futility
of working against me.Copy !req
336. But I always intended to bring him
back into the fold.Copy !req
337. You made promises to me,
promises that I expect you to keep.Copy !req
338. You've been loyal, Dominic...Copy !req
339. but Lex is blood.Copy !req
340. I've worked too long to let you
take everything away from me now.Copy !req
341. I forgot my keys.Copy !req
342. He was angry enough
to shoot your father?Copy !req
343. Seizing the reins of a billion-dollar
corporation is a powerful incentive.Copy !req
344. All he needed was
someone to take the blame.Copy !req
345. Why didn't you tell anyone about this?Copy !req
346. My father was shot the same day he
bought my company out from under me.Copy !req
347. While you were playing it close
to the vest, my father was in jail.Copy !req
348. - How long would you let him stay there?
- Until I knew for sure he didn't do it.Copy !req
349. Now I do.Copy !req
350. Look, the shooting is related
to the buyout.Copy !req
351. I needed the guilty party
to make a mistake.Copy !req
352. Like trying to kill me and Pete?Copy !req
353. So, what now?Copy !req
354. Lana...Copy !req
355. I got your message.
What's the urgency?Copy !req
356. I know about the complaint
Lionel Luthor filed against you.Copy !req
357. Have you been snooping into my past?Copy !req
358. I was curious to find out why you
wouldn't help one of my closest friends.Copy !req
359. And that gives you the right to pry?Copy !req
360. I'm your daughter. If we're gonna have
more than the same DNA in common...Copy !req
361. we have to be honest with each other.
- I didn't ask you to barge into my life.Copy !req
362. Don't worry. You know,
I won't be imposing on you again.Copy !req
363. - Lionel Luthor has nothing to do with this.
- I saw the complaint.Copy !req
364. Payback after I refused to go along with
one of his ethically dubious schemes.Copy !req
365. Business as usual for LuthorCorp.Copy !req
366. You should have kept on digging.Copy !req
367. And what would I have found?Copy !req
368. Kansas v. Sutton,
a murder trial back in the early '90s.Copy !req
369. I don't understand.Copy !req
370. I was defense counsel, court-appointed,
which meant I didn't give a damn.Copy !req
371. Five years after conviction,
his family has evidence retested...Copy !req
372. proving he was innocent.Copy !req
373. So you were still able
to get him out, right?Copy !req
374. By then it was too late.Copy !req
375. He had been executed
three months before.Copy !req
376. After that, I hung it all up.Copy !req
377. Now I try to save the world
from my living room.Copy !req
378. But at least I know
nobody's gonna die because of me.Copy !req
379. I know you can't undo the past...Copy !req
380. but you can't hide from it, either.Copy !req
381. Lana? What are you doing here?Copy !req
382. Just offering some moral support.Copy !req
383. Brought some reinforcements.Copy !req
384. - I'd like to handle your father's case.
- Of course.Copy !req
385. We need all the help we can get.
Thank you.Copy !req
386. How'd you get him to change his mind?Copy !req
387. We set the ground rules for our
relationship, we promised to be honest...Copy !req
388. no matter what.Copy !req
389. I've got a bail hearing set this afternoon.Copy !req
390. I'm sure with Jonathan's
standing in the community...Copy !req
391. we can have him out by supper.Copy !req
392. I just got good news from Lex.
His dad's doing better.Copy !req
393. - He's expected to regain consciousness.
- Oh, thank God.Copy !req
394. Dad, and if he does,
maybe he can ID the shooter.Copy !req
395. That's a big "if," given his blindness.Copy !req
396. Look, we're not out of the woods yet.Copy !req
397. Lex Luthor's alibi checks out,
but Dominic Santori's is flimsy.Copy !req
398. That should be good news for me.Copy !req
399. The bartender who could corroborate
his involvement has disappeared.Copy !req
400. Now, without him, it's gonna be hard
to keep your case from going to trial.Copy !req
401. Breaking and entering really necessary?Copy !req
402. - I thought the police checked this out.
- Yeah.Copy !req
403. They checked out the area
where my dad was arrested too.Copy !req
404. I'm gonna look over here.Copy !req
405. Pete!Copy !req
406. Oh, man, talk about sleeping
with the fishes.Copy !req
407. I think I know who shot Lionel Luthor.Copy !req
408. Lex had his father
moved to another floor.Copy !req
409. We put the word out
that Lionel was getting better...Copy !req
410. guessing it would draw you out.Copy !req
411. Kept hoping I was wrong.Copy !req
412. - What the hell?
- You went to high school with my dad.Copy !req
413. So did Mike the bartender.Copy !req
414. You and Mike were more than friends.
You had a business arrangement.Copy !req
415. Clark, I can explain.Copy !req
416. Explain how a bar with
repeated violations stays open?Copy !req
417. Or how all the evidence conveniently
pointed toward my dad?Copy !req
418. You found out about my dad's fight,
and it all came together.Copy !req
419. Is that you?Copy !req
420. Didn't I make it clear?
The conversation is over.Copy !req
421. You faked my dad's blood-alcohol test...Copy !req
422. and when I started to check out
your story, you came after me.Copy !req
423. My dad trusted you.
How could you do that?Copy !req
424. Don't you see, Clark?
It's not just about me.Copy !req
425. It's the Luthors. They're like a cancer...Copy !req
426. destroying everything they touch.Copy !req
427. The Luthors didn't kill anyone.Copy !req
428. The Luthors didn't frame my dad.Copy !req
429. What have I done?Copy !req
430. Just wanted to make sure
your dad was doing all right.Copy !req
431. He says he is.Copy !req
432. You don't sound too convinced.Copy !req
433. I found this in the house.Copy !req
434. It's my dad's high-school yearbook.Copy !req
435. Him and Ethan were in the same class.Copy !req
436. "To Jonathan...Copy !req
437. a great quarterback,
a better friend, Ethan."Copy !req
438. You grow up with someone,
you think you know them...Copy !req
439. but I mean, darkness like that
just doesn't come out of nowhere.Copy !req
440. I'm sorry about your company.Copy !req
441. What's gonna happen next?Copy !req
442. My father thinks
I'll go back to work for him.Copy !req
443. Will you?Copy !req
444. It's hard to imagine working for a man...Copy !req
445. who can enrage four people to the point
where any of them had motive to kill him.Copy !req
446. Even you.Copy !req
447. You know that darkness
you were talking about?Copy !req
448. I'm not sure we're born with it. People
like my father find a way to bring it out.Copy !req
449. So are we okay?Copy !req
450. I wish I could help you with your father.Copy !req
451. I can take him.Copy !req
452. Dad.Copy !req
453. Son.Copy !req
454. I understand you've had
a busy few days.Copy !req
455. In case you hadn't heard...Copy !req
456. Ethan has been charged in the murder
of the bartender and the attempt on you.Copy !req
457. It truly is a sad day in Smallville.Copy !req
458. I'm sure some version of the truth
will come out sooner or later...Copy !req
459. but I was hoping to hear it
from you first.Copy !req
460. The sheriff and I simply...Copy !req
461. had a misunderstanding.Copy !req
462. Sheriff.Copy !req
463. You have something for me?Copy !req
464. These are good people who happened
to make mistakes.Copy !req
465. Yes, well, we're, all of us,
only human, sheriff.Copy !req
466. These particular people sit on the board
of my son's company...Copy !req
467. so they need a little incentive
to sell their voting shares to me.Copy !req
468. - Goodbye, Mr. Luthor.
- I hope this will be...Copy !req
469. the beginning of a long
and profitable relationship.Copy !req
470. Our arrangement
was for this one time only.Copy !req
471. Now, did that proviso come before
or after you insisted on cash in advance?Copy !req
472. I was strapped.Copy !req
473. But don't think you own me.Copy !req
474. I've documented your backroom deals.Copy !req
475. You push me, and I just have
to make one call.Copy !req
476. Would that be to your attorney?Copy !req
477. He...Copy !req
478. passed along
your documented evidence.Copy !req
479. Along with his best wishes.Copy !req
480. You know...Copy !req
481. my reputation in Smallville is...Copy !req
482. of no importance to me...Copy !req
483. but yours...Copy !req
484. it's your lifeblood, sheriff.Copy !req
485. Sheriff? That's an elected position,
isn't it?Copy !req
486. Don't threaten me, you son of a bitch.Copy !req
487. Good evening, sheriff.Copy !req
488. So you took an honest man
and destroyed him...Copy !req
489. and by proxy
almost ruined Jonathan Kent.Copy !req
490. How does it feel, Dad,
knowing you brought this on yourself?Copy !req
491. But I didn't, Lex.Copy !req
492. You did...Copy !req
493. engineering your
ill-advised employee coup.Copy !req
494. And you actually believe that?Copy !req
495. It's all right, son.Copy !req
496. I forgive you.Copy !req
497. Now it's time to look to the future.Copy !req
498. Together.Copy !req
