1. Tra-la-la, doo-dah, doo-dah-dah!
2. Let's crack and split! With our hammers!
3. Boom! Crack! Split! All day long!
4. Nagi-san, promise that I'll get to use this today?
5. Yup, I promise. I'm counting on you.
6. That means we'll find some pretty stones, right?
7. We sure will. I think you'll like them.
8. Yay!
9. Let's dig 'em up and take 'em home!
10. Oh, an old test pit.
11. Test pit?
12. A hole dug up by people.
13. It's to test whether to use the site as a mine.
14. What were they digging for?
15. There aren't any records to say for sure,
16. but according to locals,
they were looking for gold.
17. Gold?
18. You mean there's gold here?
19. The people who were here thought so.
20. But their search ended with a test pit.
21. Besides, who knows if they
were really looking for go—
22. We gotta get going!
23. Gold! Gold! Gold!
24. The Value of Golden Color
25. The Value of Golden Color
26. Nagi-san, you found a spot this deep
in the mountains all by yourself?
27. Of course not.
28. This is one of the many spots found
over time by generations of alumni before me.
29. I told my colleagues I'd
bring a friend here today,
30. and they asked me to bring back
a sample for our research group.
31. So now, it's my turn
to contribute to our study.
32. Should we take another break?
33. It's okay, I can keep moving!
34. Whoa, what a huge rock.
35. This is our search site for today.
36. All right! Let's find some gold!
37. Finally... that makes five... rocks split...
38. All for nothing!
39. You're wasting your strength doing it that way.
40. Here, try holding the hammer lower.
41. It's all in the wrist, right before impact.
42. Keep your elbow tucked
to your side and start higher.
43. That was a lot quicker.
44. Much better. Way to use your arm.
45. Now I just need to find some gold.
46. What should I do with the gold I find?
47. First, I'll get the newest smartphone.
48. Not to mention a new bicycle.
49. And I'll have sweets all day, every day!
50. Huh?
51. Nagi-san! I did it, I did it!
52. Whoa, what's up?
53. Look! Look! I found gold!
54. Oh, that's pyrite.
55. Pyrite?
56. A mineral of iron and sulfur.
57. No way it's iron! Look!
58. It's gold! Just look at the color!
59. Yup. Not the best crystal,
but it's pyrite for sure.
60. See how the color isn't
so much gold as it is brass?
61. Well, that makes no sense to me!
62. Hang tight.
63. Huh?
64. Hey! What are you doing?
65. Look.
66. I just scratched off the golden bit.
67. See how it's black?
68. We can identify minerals
by the color of their powder,
69. which is called a streak.
70. White powder means it's a crystal,
and black means it's pyrite.
71. If it's real gold, the streak
would be gold, not black.
72. I bet you're trying to dupe me, Nagi-san.
73. You're planning to play on my innocence
and hoard all the gold to yourself!
74. Uh-oh. Umm...
75. Try scratching the golden part with your finger.
76. Now sniff it.
77. Reeks of iron!
78. Because it is iron.
79. But I was planning to
eat cake all day, every day...
80. That's too bad.
81. What's it worth, though?
82. It may not be gold, but if it's this pretty...
83. Pyrite is a commonly found mineral.
84. It's not worth much
in terms of monetary value.
85. Darn you! Stupid rock!
86. All this golden sparkle is just for show?
87. Isn't it good for anything?
88. Let's see, sulfur is usually
extracted from crude oil.
89. And other materials
are better sources of iron.
90. ~Iron Content in Minerals~
91. Magnetite
92. Hematite
93. Pyrite
94. Currently used iron ore
95. So there's not much industrial
demand for it, either.
96. But its crystals are beautiful.
97. That's definitely worth looking for.
98. Like that's any motivation now...
99. There you go.
100. That right there's a pyrite crystal.
101. Take a closer look.
102. See how it's shaped like a die?
103. What? You mean nature did this?
104. But it's so unnaturally square.
105. Huh... I-I guess I can keep it.
106. You'll find something even better
if you keep looking.
107. Phew. When did I manage to find so many?
108. And to think they're all pyrite.
109. All worthless, even though
they look just like gold.
110. Think of how rich I could be
if they were real gold.
111. What the—?
112. Nagi-san! I found something weird!
113. This pyrite isn't shaped like a die.
114. Hold still, let me see.
115. I thought you weren't interested
in the pyrite here.
116. Listen closely.
117. In the Case of Crystals
118. Low-temperature crystals
119. High-temperature crystals
120. Low
121. High
122. Crystals differ in shape based on
the temperature during crystallization. Most occur at low temperatures.
123. There are usually multiple
crystal types for any given mineral.
124. In the case of pyrite, there's over
ten variations, including the die.
125. Temperature and pressure
affect crystal formation.
126. Same goes for iron and sulfur content,
or even the presence of other minerals.
127. That said, crystals from the same location
are usually uniform in shape.
128. That's why all the crystals here
are cube-shaped.
129. Or so I was told.
130. I've never seen a pyritohedron produced here.
131. It's a first for you, too?
132. Maybe we were wrong about
how this pyrite was produced.
133. So? Is this shape that rare?
Is it expensive?
134. In another site,
these would be all you'd find.
135. What? So it's still just ordinary pyrite?
136. Not exactly.
137. Its value lies in the fact
that we found it here,
138. somewhere we thought it didn't exist.
139. That in itself is extremely valuable.
140. So it'll sell for a ton?
141. Not that kind of value.
142. Herein lies gold
143. Say you find a lump of gold.
144. Hey, gold!
145. Hey, gold!
146. If it's a place known to have gold,
147. there's not much value besides monetary gain.
148. But I thought value was just what it sells for.
149. Isn't that enough?
150. Does any other type of value even exist?
151. Sure does.
152. If it's from a place known
to not have gold...
153. Herein lies no gold
154. Hey, gold!
155. Oh, gold...
156. Herein lies gold
157. That discovery would rewrite
the world as we know it.
158. Shiny gold!
159. Shiny gold!
160. That's value beyond money.
161. The fact that you found it would completely
flip conventional wisdom and theory.
162. Y-You mean this, too?
163. I'd say it has that potential.
164. H-How's that even possible?
165. This thing could change the entire world?
166. To put it very simply, what was
conventionally thought to be like this...
167. Areas that fulfill conditions
to create cubes (dice)
168. Today's
collection site
169. Areas that fulfill conditions to create dodecahedrons
170. has the potential to change to this.
171. That's barely anything.
172. You think so?
173. It may not be a huge change,
but I find it really exciting.
174. That rock gives ordinary people
like us the power to directly
175. leave our mark on humanity's
understanding of the world.
176. Sure, monetary value might
be more straightforward.
177. But when we get too caught up in numbers...
178. it can narrow our perspective.
179. This rock may not amount to much
in terms of price,
180. but there are other ways to assess its worth.
181. Its true potential is priceless.
182. That kind of value is just
as appealing, don't you think?
183. This one. And this one, too.
184. You're really taking all those home?
185. Yup!
186. This one has a big crystal.
187. And this one has crystals
stuck together in a funny way.
188. And then there's...
189. This one!
190. This one's for you, Nagi-san!
191. You sure?
192. Yup!
193. It's better that you have it, for sure!
194. Okay, if you say so.
195. Thanks.
196. I'll take you to find
whatever you want in return.
197. What do you want most?
198. Gold!
199. I actually admire that about you, Ruri.
200. I get it already, Nagi-san!
201. We'll go hunt for gold next time.
202. Mkay.
203. Nagi's Respite
204. People often assume that minerals with the same chemical composition will always yield the same crystal structure, but that can actually vary depending on the conditions under which the crystal forms.
For example, graphite (used in pencil lead) and diamond are both
made entirely of carbon, but because they form under different
temperatures and pressures, they differ completely both in appearance and properties. If you delve deeper into the world of crystals, you'll find things get even more complex.
Take pyrite, for instance. Its crystals typically form in three shapes: cubes, octahedrons, and dodecahedrons.
But under certain conditions, crystals can form in between
these shapes, too. Even though they share the same
chemical composition, its crystal structure will vary depending on the environment in which they formed.
Seeing how minerals have different crystal structures
even with the same chemical composition, you can imagine how avid collectors can get hooked.
205. Nagi's Respite
206. People often think that gold can only be found in special places,
but that's not necessarily the case. Home to many volcanoes,
Japan is a country rich in mineral resources, and in the past,
gold was found all over the nation. There's not much trace of it now,
but many records show that various regions were mines to small amounts of gold, and nearby rivers were known to have placer gold, as well.
Since there were small-scale gold sites all over Japan, it goes without saying
that even smaller, ultra-scale sites existed as well, just not enough to make mining profitable. These locations were never documented or recognized as gold-bearing sites, let alone turned into mines. But these unmined areas may very well be feeding placer gold into rivers even now.
You might even be able to find placer gold in a nearby river around your home. That said, even under ideal conditions, the best you could hope for is to find a single grain after a full day of effort even with professional-level panning skills. Unless you have a particular reason, it's probably best to visit a well-known site.
207. If you want to try hunting for placer gold but don't have
the proper gear, you can make a DIY pan by sticking some plastic tape inside a regular mixing bowl.
208. Ready?
209. Yup!
210. Ruri, got the pan?
211. Here!
212. All right, let's take a look.
213. Find any?
214. Not sure yet.
215. Is that it?
216. It's shiny, I guess.
217. That's placer gold.
218. Gold?
219. Yay! Finally!
220. Finally, I found me some gold!
221. It wasn't supposed to rain until tonight.
222. Oh well. Let's call it a day.
223. But we're just getting started!
224. Now for the latest news on the heavy rain.
225. Real gold.
226. Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, area rivers
are seeing elevated water levels.
227. Next time, I'll bring home a ton more.
228. Local residents are advised
to steer clear of nearby rivers.
229. The Kanto Region is expected to see
up to 50mm of rainfall overnight.
230. Nagi-san! Nagi-san!
231. I just saw the news.
232. So, the river with gold today...
233. Yeah. Okay.
234. How are you so calm at a time like this?
235. The placer gold! It's all gonna wash away!
236. It looks totally different from last week.
237. That huge boulder wasn't there.
238. How'd that driftwood get here?
239. The placer gold's gone for sure.
240. Here you go.
241. Think it's still here?
242. Hey, Nagi-san?
243. What's with all the cars today?
244. The river's swelled quite a bit.
245. I wouldn't be surprised
if they were looking for gold, too.
246. See, everyone's worried about the gold.
247. You never know what you have until it's gone...
248. Actually, it's the opposite.
249. Just because it's the same place,
doesn't mean your odds are the same.
250. But isn't there less gold because of the rain?
251. I wouldn't be so sure.
252. Why don't you try asking the sky again?
253. The sky?
254. This is gonna take forever!
255. You have to shake it harder.
256. Won't the gold spill out?
257. Nope.
258. Gold
259. Iron
260. Even iron only has a specific gravity of 8.
261. Compare that to gold,
which is much heavier at 19.
262. It'll sink the more you shake,
so don't worry about it spilling out.
263. Found some! They were here all along.
264. Wow, there's three of them.
265. So bad weather brings more placer gold?
266. That's right.
267. How though?
268. Think about when gold moves.
269. Gold is over twice the weight of iron.
270. It barely moves in a normal current.
271. But with the help of a greater force...
272. Like the recent storm!
273. Exactly.
274. Like you said, the gold we found
the other day probably did wash away.
275. But at the same time, it supplied new
placer gold from the mountains upstream.
276. The storm brought more gold
than it washed away.
277. Right now, this spot is
a pristine, untapped site.
278. The heavy rain created ideal conditions,
both in quality and quantity.
279. Ideal conditions, both in quality and quantity!
280. What if we find a lump of gold?
281. I'll go grab a bucket!
282. I didn't notice how big this spot was
last week with that boulder.
283. Do you think this rock...
284. Um, Nagi-san?
285. A pothole...
286. What's this? Did someone
do some construction here?
287. Earth to Nagi-san.
288. Nagi-san, pay attention!
289. O-Oh, right. Sorry.
290. Jeez! What did you just say?
291. A what-hole?
292. A pothole.
293. It's a natural hole made from carved bedrock.
294. It's natural?
295. It happens when a rock slips underneath
and swirls around due to the current.
296. What's that mean?
297. Placer gold may have collected at the bottom.
298. No way! Tell me more!
299. Since gold is so heavy,
it sinks deeper with time,
300. eventually going beyond the reach of humans.
301. That's why I pulled a plant to start.
302. Because their roots grab onto placer gold.
303. The bedrock prevents gold from sinking any deeper.
304. Depending on the depth, potholes
are even more effective at that.
305. This one's a decent size with plenty of depth.
306. Once gold slips in, there's no coming out.
307. It only collects more.
308. I smell jackpot!
309. Judging from its state,
no one's been here yet.
310. I have a shovel in my car, but we
might be better off grabbing more gear.
