501. I've realized that there's sort of a tact

508. at home, and I'm right here.

579. - I used to get made fun of

582. And at first, I was a little embarrassed by it.

584. - But I realized it endeared her toward me.

585. And it made me just embrace not only my slue foot

586. but a lot of things about myself.

587. I embrace the fact that I was homeless once.

588. - Yeah. - I accept me when I'm happy.

589. I accept me when I'm sad.

590. I accept me when I'm being a bitch,

591. but I always accept me.

592. - It's so easy to talk to Sapphira.

595. I actually felt a little bit intimidated.

617. So, from Kansas City, Missouri, to here,

618. what's the drag journey been like for you?

619. - My mom introduced me to theater.

620. And I did theater all throughout high school.

621. And then I started doing drag, like, my final year of college.

622. It felt like I finally belonged somewhere.

623. - Right, you know, a lot of queens

624. that I talk to say that their mother

625. actually is in their drag in some way.

626. Do you feel like your mother is represented in your drag?

627. - Yeah, I definitely feel like our humor

628. is, like, very much the same. - Uh-huh.

629. - And, you know, we did all this artistic stuff together.

630. And she always was my biggest supporter in that,

631. when other people weren't,

632. so, you know, a lot of her is in my art form.

633. - So, speaking of family, you talk

634. about what it was like to grow up in a low-income household.

635. - Yeah.

636. - I want to know, was there a moment when you realized

637. that your family maybe had a little bit less

638. than everyone else, was in a different situation?

639. - Usually, like, around Christmastime, because my mom—

640. I could always tell my mom

641. got, like, in a little bit of, like, a sadder mood.

642. And that's when I kind of started to realize

643. there were a lot of times where our utilities were shut off

644. or, you know, like, we had to go eat at our grandma's.

645. - Your mom was a single mom.

646. She raised four children. - Yes.

647. - So it's probably those little things

648. that everyone takes for granted

649. that she had to work extra hard.

650. - Yeah.

651. - So, if she's listening to this podcast,

681. And you talk of a harrowing experience

682. of being ghosted by a date.

683. - So we did go out in the park for our second date.

684. So I went on the slide on all fours,

685. because I didn't want my ass to get dirty.

688. And then after I do that,

689. I feel, like, this gunky feeling here.

690. - Gunky feeling?

691. - I was like, oh, what is that? So I reached down.

692. And I touched it, and I looked up, and I was like,

695. And then, like, it somehow traveled upwards onto my hand.

701. - You were very honest and candid in this story.

702. And then you do get a little bit more revealing.

703. You talk about what it was like growing up in Taiwan...

705. - And being inundated with images

706. and media from the West. - Yeah.

707. Growing up, seeing a white man, high features, a tall nose

708. and the brow bones and the thick brows and the beard...

709. - Yeah. - The beauty standard

710. of the world was that. - Right.

711. - It was, like, looking into the mirror,

712. I was like, I look nothing like that at all.

713. It just really created this self-doubting,

714. like, I don't feel attractive because I don't look like that.

715. Do I have the ability to attract anyone

716. that would like me for just my natural features?

717. I just never knew if I could ever escape that, you know?

718. So I always played with makeup and cross-dressing.

719. I felt like I could really change up how I look,

720. and I can escape my face in a sense.

721. - It's like drag helps you bring out a fantasy...

722. - Yeah.

723. - But also helped hide things in a way.

724. - Yeah, I really hated looking in the mirror

725. in general growing up. - Really?

726. - Yeah.

727. Even till now, I don't have the habit

728. of staring myself into the mirror

729. unless I have to do makeup. - Mm.

730. - And that is still something that I am...

731. building upon—my confidence.

732. So I feel like drag, even though may not be able to solve

733. the problem... - Right.

734. - It really did help me

735. to, you know, build my own self-confidence

736. and, even without the makeup, still looking in the mirror

737. and feel like, you know what?

738. There is something beautiful there.

739. - Nymphia, I can tell, is really opening up to me

740. the more I talk to her, and I'm excited about that

741. because she's got a very unique story to tell.

742. Just because someone appears like they are taking on

743. the world and are extremely confident,

744. there is still that insecurity and vulnerability at the core,

745. which every single person can identify with.

746. - Hopefully it can help someone out there

747. who's still struggling and finding themselves

748. and finding what's beautiful about them.

799. - I just think I was strong the whole time.

802. But I felt like I was able to let go in that lip sync

803. and really have fun.

817. I feel like my lowest was, like,

818. how hard I was being on myself

819. for, like, the bathroom challenge.

821. - I think my journey here at "Drag Race"

822. has been a really, really exciting one.

823. I won two challenges.

824. I've lip-synched for the win. I've lip-synched to stay here.

825. That says something about America's next drag superstar,

826. that they are this multidimensional person

827. that has their up days and low days.

828. - I will say, that bathroom challenge got to me as well,

829. just because it happened at the point

830. that it happened at.

831. - Girl, it got to me, too, because of you.

832. It got to me through you.

833. - Through me, yeah.

834. - But then you turned it the fuck out.

835. - Exactly, we did.

836. Yes, I had a moment of self-doubt

837. where, you know, I did sort of let the pressure

839. but I pieced myself together.

842. - I think it's similar to Q,

843. where in the middle of the competition,

844. I was really insecure about myself

845. and just really not sure.

846. - I could really never tell with you

847. whether you were actually unsure or, like—

848. - Playing a game?

849. - I'm just really struggling.

850. - Nobody believes you, Nymphia.

851. - I'm so stressed out.

852. - Girl, don't play this time.

853. - What kind of game can I play or, like, gain from

854. if I act like I'm just nervous?

855. - Because you would be saying

856. that you're, like, you know, not confident.

857. And then you would come out in, like, a sickening runway look,

858. and you would kill the challenge.

859. - No, because that for me is when I feel very insecure

860. is when I'm turned off.

861. Like, I just feel—like, those are genuine feelings

862. where I feel very nervous and really in doubt and insecure.

863. But, like, on the stage, I, like, instantly have to turn on

864. because you don't have any other choice.

866. - I can understand how these other queens

867. can see this as a strategy.

868. But, honestly, this is just how my brain works.

869. And, like, there's no strategy behind it.

870. All my struggles and all my self-doubt are all real.

871. And it's just a process for me.

872. - What was everybody's, like, first impression of each other

873. when we, like, first met?

874. - Sapphira and Q, I first met when y'all

875. walked into the Werk Room.

876. And Sapphira walked in

877. with those really bright contact lenses.

878. They were very striking.

879. And her breasts, they've truly experienced a growth

1032. because I have a very strong connection with my mother.

1033. And I'm so glad that I learned that about you,

1143. how the pieces come together.

1145. of the discussion,

1146. but then the other stories didn't connect to that,

1147. nor did they really connect with the theme of walking away

1148. from disaster or trauma.

1149. - I needed to hear you.

1150. And I didn't get that.

1151. What I got from this was, you a shady bitch.

1152. - This book is about you.

1153. And I didn't know who you were.

1154. - Every time I go and talk to you in the Werk Room,

1155. I could see you go into your head

1156. to be very deliberate about what you're saying.

1157. Why do you think

1158. you don't reveal more of the underbelly?

1159. - I feel very, very powerful and very secure in myself

1160. when I'm in drag. - Mm-hmm.

1161. - And I don't necessarily feel like that very much

1162. when I'm out of drag,

1163. so I've kind of built up this persona.

1164. And that's what I kind of lead with as Plane Jane.

1165. - Yeah. No, listen, I understand completely.

1166. Just in terms of marketing,

1167. in terms of show business, in terms of life,

1168. it's revealing the soft underbelly

1169. that allows people to love you.

1186. It had the red-ribbon collar,

1187. where she then came out to us as positive.

1190. who's capable of really inventive, interesting looks.

1191. I just didn't see that on display in this episode enough.

1192. - The look for the book cover, I wanted more.

1193. - She chose this Belle A-line design,

1194. but it was all frilly and stuff.

1195. So, yes, it's beautiful as is everything that she makes,

1196. but she couldn't do much with it as far as the shape goes.

1197. And that's what we got—

1198. her standing in a bowl of alphabet soup.

1199. And I'm not sure that really tells me

1200. what the book is about.

1201. - I didn't sense who Q is.

1202. In the podcast, once Q starts opening up about her mom,

1203. there's something real there.

1204. But that was quite late in the game.

1205. - You know, she wants to win all the time.

1206. And you can kind of see her striving for it.

1207. So, when she doesn't do as well,

1208. you could also see the disappointment.

1209. And I worry that she's a little too hard on herself

1210. when she doesn't do as well.

1212. - The podcast just made me say, I love you because I am you.

1213. And I love a person who operates in forgiveness.

1214. - Now, in this competition, she started out a winner,

1215. with Ruveal Yourself and then her James Brown.

1216. And, of course, one of our favorite looks

1217. in this whole season, her DragCon 1980 look.

1241. But the thing that I've struggled with Nymphia is,

1242. she's so uncomfortable in her own skin.

1243. And then we got the podcast.

1244. And when she stopped doing that runaround thing

1245. that she does all the time, because that's her defense,

1246. that was the death of old Nymphia and the rebirth.

1247. We watched it happen.

1248. - I felt like I was seeing

1249. a queen discovering herself in real time.

1250. - You know, you're absolutely right.

1251. Tonight she really came into her own power.

1252. - That book cover, Ru, Grace Jones, yes?

1253. - Uh-huh. - It was everything.

1254. - It was perfection.

1255. - I think tonight was a massive breakthrough for Nymphia.

1257. - Plane Jane had us at "Burger Finger."

1258. - She has been such a powerhouse from the beginning.

1259. "Made You Look," the Octomom she chose

1260. for the powerful mother, you know?

1261. - Snatch Game.

1262. - Snatch Game, and it was amazing to watch.

1263. - What really turned it for me was the way

1264. she turned out Lazy Susan.

1265. It was so amazing.

1266. - But the podcast interview really suggested to me

1267. someone who doesn't know what her story is

1268. or how to sell it yet.

1269. - She had the opportunity to make me feel a warm sensation

1270. deep in a place like the rest of the girls did,

1271. but she didn't.

1272. She took the time to read her competitors

1273. that have already gone home.

1274. - It just wasn't as charming as Plane Jane actually really is.

1275. - She comes from a place of kind of hiding out.

1276. She came out of the closet very late for her.

1277. And, you know, I think she's used to sort of hiding.

1278. So I think we got a bit of that.

1279. But at this point in the competition,

1280. you have to be vulnerable.

1281. - Now, this book cover is not what I'm used to seeing of her.

1282. - The pose was very "Cosmo."

1283. It was very Scavullo, that pose.

1284. But the hair was too small to balance out the outfit

1285. that she wore.

1286. I was surprised, because she understands proportion

1287. better than almost anybody in this competition.
