312. and now she's backing away from the story.

712. They lost it. They took me to church.

713. They got me exorcised

714. because they thought I was possessed by a gay demon.

716. - I was so confused after the whole thing went down

717. because was I straight now? Like...

718. I had to go through therapy.

719. - Oh, my God.

720. - And I was on a track to go to straight camp.

721. I was meeting with these pastors,

722. and he was like, "In a homosexual relationship,

723. you'll never find success, you'll never find love."

724. And I stopped him and I went upstairs and I packed my car.

725. I said, "I can't do this anymore."

726. - Oh, my goodness.

727. You know, Dusty, I watched this at home,

728. and I busted out crying when I saw this.

729. And you went through this thing that's so horrific.

730. If you don't mind, would you tell us,

731. what is conversion therapy?

732. - Conversion therapy is a cleanse and a confession.

733. You go through this process

734. where you have to literally list

735. every person you've had a sexual experience with,

736. and it's literally just this very humiliating process.

737. It was really rough,

738. and I just had to have a day where I said, enough.

739. - How did you find the strength to do that?

740. - I've gone through some hardships as a kid,

741. and I've always told myself that this moment is just for now.

742. What I'm experiencing right now cannot last forever.

743. So I know that there is a tomorrow,

744. and it will get better.

745. I found creative outlets

746. to immerse myself in for distractions,

747. and the people who saw me shine

748. that needed to be there for me became my tribe.

749. - And did that also mean leaving your family behind?

750. - I had to, yeah.

751. - And do you speak with them?

752. - Since that day, they've apologized.

753. We do not see eye to eye on homosexuality still,

754. but we have moved on past that day.

755. The things that we don't talk about

756. is because we don't see each other as equal humans.

757. - Is it enough for you to just have your chosen family?

758. Is that—would that be enough for you?

759. - You know, it...

760. I love my chosen family.

761. I'm so very lucky.

762. But...

763. It's just really hard to have strangers come up to you

764. and say that I look up to you, I'm so proud of you,

765. I'm cheering you on,

766. and then you don't have those people

767. that you wish were there the most

768. saying, we are proud of you.

799. - No, because I know my mother and I have to deal with her,

805. - No, she knows, but like I'm grown and I don't—

806. like, my mom is my everything, you know what I mean?

808. - And I didn't talk to her for like four years

809. because you can't be black and gay.

810. Like, you just can't. You just can't.

812. And then when you have such a strong—

813. I'm fifth generation full-time ministry.

814. This is like heresy, you know what I mean?

815. - Wow, that's deep.

816. So, Monique, you can relate to Dusty.

817. - Yeah. The day that Dusty, Blair, Eureka, and Asia

818. opened up about their spirituality,

819. I really didn't 'cause, like, I still kind of love

820. this one that we call God and, you know,

821. go by the name of Jesus, whatever.

822. But to hear again the BS that you go through

823. just trying to become your most authentic self,

824. thinking that if I just pray it away or confess this name,

825. like, I'll finally be free,

826. but to be 100% honest, it wasn't.

827. It really wasn't.

828. It really was not until

829. I put on a wig and a dress and I grabbed that mic

830. and I saw this kid sitting across from me,

831. and like we had this dance party at Hamburger Mary's,

832. and he wanted to go up

833. and I said, know that you are loved

834. and you are so worth it and go twirl,

835. like go give it to 'em.

836. - Twirl, bitch.

837. - And I knew that in that moment

838. that, like, yo, black gay youth come up to you,

839. because I wanted to be that boy, but I couldn't be that boy.

840. So to be in a day and age where they can,

841. that means so much.

842. Like, it was all worth it.

843. - It was all worth it.

844. All the pain, it was all worth it.

845. Have you spoken with your mother?

846. - I did, but she wasn't like happy.

847. And so I felt very alone,

848. and to come back to your room every night

849. and just you have friends, but you just like God, I'm alone,

850. and there wasn't nobody but me, Jesus,

851. and glitter and rhinestones. That was it.

852. Like Psalms 110 says, he wraps himself in a garment of light.

853. Dolce can't do that, Versace can't do that.

854. Like the aah, he lives for the ooh-ah-ah sensation.

855. So when you know that, you're free, and I'm sorry.

856. - No, this is right. This is it.

857. This is it right here. This is it right here.

858. Because what you're saying is you,

859. through this journey of a lot of pain,

860. you have found what the true meaning is.

861. You just quoted the Bible.

862. You just interpret it through your own path.

863. You've understood what those words really mean,

882. that makes queens bare their souls.

883. It's like a truth serum.

884. But nobody was prepared for the startling confession

885. of our dear Blair St. Clair.

886. Let's take a look.

887. - Um...

888. My first sexual experience, I was raped at a college party,

889. and from that I have looked to find pretty things.

890. It's something I need to get over,

891. but I've tried to turn positive the best I can.

892. - So, Blair, in "Untucked," you share

893. that this was the first time you had spoken about that.

894. What made you decide to do it on this forum?

895. - You know...

896. sometimes your heart knows when you're ready to talk

897. before your brain does.

898. - Mm-hmm.

899. - And I don't even think my brain

900. was fully capable of what I was doing at the moment.

901. - Yeah. When did you tell your mother?

902. - I had a conversation with my mother

903. a few weeks after I got home from "Drag Race."

904. We sat down and we talked about it,

905. and that was probably harder

906. than talking about it to the world.

907. Telling the people that you love the most

908. something traumatic about you is really difficult,

909. and that's why I've held it in for so long,

910. 'cause I didn't even want to admit it to myself.

911. - Yeah. And in all the years

912. before you revealed it on television,

913. how had you been coping with that pain?

914. - You know, everyone has a different way of coping,

915. and everyone has a different mechanism in what they do,

916. and whenever I found pain

917. and whenever I found hurt, frustration, anger

918. or anything that was like a negative emotion,

919. I would turn to alcohol, and I would drink in excess.

920. It's something that I didn't realize was a problem

921. until after coming home from "Drag Race"

922. and recognizing that might be something that I can't control

923. because I use to mask the pain.

924. Now I've been living a sober life

925. since coming back from "Drag Race."

926. And I can tell you

927. that from what I've experienced in my spiritual growth

928. is that I am a more humbled, caring, thoughtful person,

929. and it has truly changed my life.

930. - How have fans reacted?

931. - Fans have been incredible.

932. They've just been— and so have my sisters.

933. You guys have just been so wonderful,

934. and I think the best way to describe it

935. is that I have gone through something so painful,

936. so haunting and hurtful,

937. but it's only been received back to me

938. in so much love from everybody else,

939. and it's just been so amazing for me to embrace that back.

940. - Thank you so much, Blair, for being so brave,

941. and for inspiring so many people.

942. Opening up is always hard,

943. especially when it comes to family.

945. - In 2014, I won a small pageant in Brooklyn.

946. The pageant was on Saturday.

947. I wake up Monday morning

948. with like 27 missed calls from my mom.

949. I'm like what happened, what is going on?

950. They sent an article back to St. Lucia

951. with me in drag on the cover of the newspaper,

952. the only newspaper on the entire island.

953. She called me, she was like what is going on?

954. Are you trans? Are you gay?

955. What is all this shit? I'm like no.

956. I was just doing it for a movie thing

957. and it got misconstrued.

958. It was the craziest thing in my life, girl.

959. In retrospect, I should have just said,

960. hey, I'm a drag queen,

961. but I like lied about it,

962. and there's a small sliver of me

963. that thinks that they might reject me,

964. and that is why I don't want to say it.

965. It's very scary.

966. - Now, you talked about your Caribbean upbringing.

967. - Yeah. - Tell me about that.

968. How did that affect you?

969. - Growing up in a small island like St. Lucia,

970. there aren't lots of gay people.

971. You don't see gay people on TV.

972. You don't see gay people at the store.

973. So when I moved back to America,

974. and I was thrust into New York City

975. where going to school on the 2 train,

976. I was seeing drag queens coming off their shift from work

977. at 7:00 in the morning.

978. It is like— it was a shock to me.

979. And me knowing that there was a small part of me

980. that identified with that,

981. and it was like a very haunting and daunting fear of mine

982. to realize that, hey, I'm gay, but not just gay,

983. I'm like the highest form of gay, I'm a drag queen.

984. - The highest form of gay.

985. - It was like the Megazord of being gay.

986. I am a drag queen.

987. Have they seen the show?

988. - I mean, she's still very wary about it.

989. She won't say that I'm on "Drag Race."

990. She's like, so that show you're doing, how you doing on it?

991. Are you still on it?

992. And I'm like, yeah, Mom, I'm still on it.

993. This was episode eight, I was still doing well.

994. And I was like, yeah, Mom, I'm still on there.

995. She's like, well, I hope you go far, but she has not—

996. - Why do you think that is?

997. Why do you think she is reluctant

998. to watching you on the show?

999. - I think just from an afro-black perspective,

1000. like being gay

1001. and saying that you're homosexual and all those things,

1002. it's hard for black women and black moms to reconcile with

1003. because it is— it often is demonized

1004. because she's at church every Sunday morning,

1005. and like that is her devotion.

1006. So seeing that her son is amplifying all those fears

1007. that she's been preached at

1008. every Wednesday night in Bible study

1009. and every Thursday at choir practice,

1010. it's hard for her to— - Amen.

1011. - To accept that her son is that thing

1012. that she's been told to fear, and is not—

1013. - Yeah. Because at some level

1014. she'd have to deconstruct her whole belief system

1015. to accept what you're doing. - Right.

1016. - Is there still a part of you inside that is—

1017. that sort of demonizes being a drag queen to yourself?

1018. - Yeah. You know, I feel old habits die hard.

1019. I went to church every Sunday morning and I was in choir,

1020. and I still do sing at a choir in drag.

1021. Every Wednesday night I'm in choir in full drag.

1022. - Yes. - Ooh, praise Him.

1023. - It's a very loving place,

1024. but the fact that my mom still can't say

1025. my son is a drag queen, I think it is that part of me

1026. that I know that she is still probably

1027. really wary any airing of that fact.

1028. - Yeah, yeah. All right.

1029. One last question about that.

1030. Does your whole family wear a pussycat wig?

1031. - Ru, I come from a very long lineage

1032. of the pussycat wig ladies.

1033. My grandmother, my great-great-grandmother,

1034. and my great- great-great-grandfather, okay?

1035. - Miss Hattie May X Change. - Miss Hattie May X Change.

1036. He was a drag queen girl, and he had a pussycat wig.

1037. - I love it.

1038. Now, Yuhua, you have an interesting relationship

1039. with your parents, is that correct?

1040. - Yes. Yes.

1041. I grew up in a very, very conservative family.

1042. I am original from China,

1043. and in China we view drag queens

1044. as someone who is mentally ill, unstable, and crazy.

1045. - Well, that's true. That's true.

1046. - So when I was growing up,

1047. I used to be very, very, very, very scared of drag

1048. until I discovered what drag was.

1049. And I put a wig on.

1050. I tried to play with all the colors on the makeup palette,

1051. and it made me so free,

1052. and made me so much more happier.

1053. It gave me confidence and determination,

1054. and it saved me as a person.

1055. - And did you do it in secret?

1056. - I did it in secret. I was 16 at the time.

1057. - Where would you put the clothes on?

1058. - I would sneak out and put the clothes on

1059. in the basement of the apartment that we lived in

1060. near the garbage cans.

1061. - Do your parents know that you do drag now?

1062. - They've seen pictures when I was younger,

1063. but they don't know where I am with drag right now.

1064. - Yeah. Do you still see them?

1065. - Yes, I still see them. We don't talk about it.

1066. I think it's very common in Asian culture

1067. that you don't talk about stuff like that

1068. where it's looked down upon, it's shameful,

1069. so it is best that we don't talk about it.

1070. Because if we talk about it,

1071. then we would distance ourself further away from it,

1072. and I think a lot of Asians out there

1073. can relate to the same situation as well.

1074. - Do you ever see a day where you tell them?

1075. - I don't know.

1076. I mean, till this day they still ask me,

1077. when are you gonna bring back home a Chinese girlfriend?

1078. But don't they know that I am the girlfriend already?
