1. Girl, if you don't stopCopy !req
2. - all that fidgeting.
- I-I'm... What?Copy !req
3. I'm sorry,
I can't-I can't control it.Copy !req
4. I'm just nervous.Copy !req
5. I am, too.
But we're in good hands.Copy !req
6. You have swollen lymph nodes.Copy !req
7. It's very common
for people with AIDS.Copy !req
8. When we get back the results of
the biopsy from Dr. Greenberg,Copy !req
9. - we'll have a better idea.
- Well, whatever it is, I hopeCopy !req
10. it gets rid of these
night sweats.Copy !req
11. I haven't had
a full night's sleep in weeks.Copy !req
12. May I have a word with, uh...
Pray Tell alone?Copy !req
13. Uh, no, stay.
They...Copy !req
14. These women are family.Copy !req
15. The tissue samples
confirmed my suspicion.Copy !req
16. You have
AIDS-related lymphoma.Copy !req
17. - Cancer?
- Yes.Copy !req
18. The T cells we need
to boost your immunityCopy !req
19. and fight the cancer
aren't there.Copy !req
20. This makes it almost impossible
for me to treat you safely.Copy !req
21. What about, um... chemo?Copy !req
22. Chemotherapy could
kill the cancer,Copy !req
23. but it'd also kill you.Copy !req
24. Uh, how... how long do I have?Copy !req
25. At most, six months.Copy !req
26. Fuck this.Copy !req
27. Fuck him.
Smug motherfucker.Copy !req
28. I can tell you, I've seenCopy !req
29. a dozen AIDS patients
just like you—Copy !req
30. night sweats, fevers,
swollen glands—Copy !req
31. gone on to recover and live.Copy !req
32. And we're getting
a second opinion.Copy !req
33. Pray. Pray.Copy !req
34. - Where'd you go?Copy !req
35. - You okay?
- I'm fine. I'm fine.Copy !req
36. Don't y'all worry about me.
Ain't no white manCopy !req
37. in a lab coat and cheap shoes
gonna tell meCopy !req
38. - I got to throw in the towel.
- Amen.Copy !req
39. I've always known I was
living on limited time.Copy !req
40. But now...Copy !req
41. I know know.Copy !req
42. And I have to use
this time wisely.Copy !req
43. Yeah.Copy !req
44. I have to tell
the people I loveCopy !req
45. that I love them.Copy !req
46. - I love you, Pray.
- I love you, too.Copy !req
47. I love y'all.Copy !req
48. And there are some other people
who need to hear that from me.Copy !req
49. Some folks I got to forgive.Copy !req
50. The category is...Copy !req
51. Live...Copy !req
52. Work...Copy !req
53. Pose!Copy !req
54. Go, Pray. Go, Pray.
Hey, hey, go, Pray.Copy !req
55. - Go, Pray. Go, Pray.
Prayerful?Copy !req
56. - Is that you, baby?
- Hi, Mommy.Copy !req
57. - I thought I'd surprise you.
- Ooh,Copy !req
58. what a blessingCopy !req
59. after all these years.Copy !req
60. Oh, my God.Copy !req
61. How long I got you?Copy !req
62. - For as long as you'll have me.
- Oh! You hungry?Copy !req
63. - Mm.
- I'm making catfish
for lunch. Oh.Copy !req
64. Is Auntie Latrice and Jada
coming over?Copy !req
65. Does a one-legged duck
swim in a circle?Copy !req
66. Nah, even hypertension can't
keep Latrice from my cooking.Copy !req
67. Look at you!
Come in here.Copy !req
68. Mmm! Mmm, mmm, mmm.Copy !req
69. Mmm.
Frying up real nice.Copy !req
70. Mm, sure is.
It is.Copy !req
71. Is this real silk?Copy !req
72. Yes, of course.Copy !req
73. - You think I'd wear rayon?
- Should ICopy !req
74. pull out your
high school yearbook?Copy !req
75. - You weren't always a swan.
- Eh...Copy !req
76. How much a silk shirt like that
run you— hundred, $200?Copy !req
77. How gauche.Copy !req
78. You can call me
all the names you want,Copy !req
79. but the money
you spend on clothes—Copy !req
80. you could fix the leak
in that church roof.Copy !req
81. Oh, stop it, now.Copy !req
82. It's enough chitter-chatter.Copy !req
83. My baby is home.Copy !req
84. And you have to tell us
about your life in New York.Copy !req
85. Mm.
- It's good.Copy !req
86. It's fine.Copy !req
87. Mm-hmm.Copy !req
88. Challenging.Copy !req
89. That's why I'm visiting.Copy !req
90. - Most I can lend you is $50.
- Oh, hush up, now.Copy !req
91. Baby, is that why you came home?
That... You need money?Copy !req
92. No, Mommy.Copy !req
93. - Okay.Copy !req
94. I came to share something
with you.Copy !req
95. Well, it can't be worse
than the last timeCopy !req
96. - you gathered us for a meal.
- You mean that timeCopy !req
97. I bared my soul
to the women I loveCopy !req
98. and bravely told them I was gay?Copy !req
99. Oh, Lord, here we go again.Copy !req
100. If I have to hear aboutCopy !req
101. your sexuality one more time.Copy !req
102. I do not talk
about my sex life.Copy !req
103. - That's 'cause you ain't got
no sex life to talk about.Copy !req
104. I'm not here
to talk about my sexuality.Copy !req
105. I'm here to talk
about my health.Copy !req
106. Is it the sugars?Copy !req
107. No, I don't have diabetes.Copy !req
108. Well, what is it—Copy !req
109. sickle cell?
Asthma?Copy !req
110. No. I don't know any other way
to say this, so...Copy !req
111. I have AIDS.Copy !req
112. I'm dying.Copy !req
113. I have been...Copy !req
114. HIV positive for six years,Copy !req
115. and I didn't want
to burden y'all untilCopy !req
116. it became serious.Copy !req
117. I know that we've already
been through so much.Copy !req
118. Mommy, I'm not trying
to upset you.Copy !req
119. - Uh-uh.
- And I'm so sorry.Copy !req
120. - I'm sorry.
- Mm-mm.Copy !req
121. - I'm really sorry.
- Mm-mm.Copy !req
122. - Mm-mm.
- Mommy. Mommy...Copy !req
123. Pray, let her go, baby.Copy !req
124. See, I always knew this would
happen. Heavenly Father,Copy !req
125. - save his soul...
- Stop it.Copy !req
126. - from eternal damnation.
- Please, please,Copy !req
127. please, please stop.Copy !req
128. I don't need your prayers.Copy !req
129. I need your love.Copy !req
130. I never stopped loving you.Copy !req
131. Hate the sin,Copy !req
132. - love the sinner.
- Oh, Jesus.Copy !req
133. Which is why
I care about your soul.Copy !req
134. Just shut your ole big mouth.Copy !req
135. If you cared about
the state of anyone's soul,Copy !req
136. then you would have
stood up for meCopy !req
137. when the church judged me
for getting a divorce.Copy !req
138. You had a child out of wedlock
with a married man!Copy !req
139. I lost my community.Copy !req
140. All because of some outdated lawCopy !req
141. that was created by men
some 3,000 years ago.Copy !req
142. No, God's word is immutable.Copy !req
143. Divorce, homosexuality,
pedophilia...Copy !req
144. No, no, no. Don't put
those words beside each other.Copy !req
145. Your god made me this way,Copy !req
146. and there is nothing
wrong with me.Copy !req
147. God made you in His image.Copy !req
148. Everything else is a choice.Copy !req
149. You think it was a choiceCopy !req
150. for me to be called "faggot"
and beatCopy !req
151. every day of my childhood?Copy !req
152. You think it was a choiceCopy !req
153. for me to lose every man
I've ever loved?Copy !req
154. Sometimes I think I wouldn't
even have this diseaseCopy !req
155. if it wasn't for the church
and how y'all treated me.Copy !req
156. I...Copy !req
157. That's where
the troubles started.Copy !req
158. The drinking
and the drugging and...Copy !req
159. the one-night stands and...Copy !req
160. I'm so sorry.Copy !req
161. Pray, I didn't know.Copy !req
162. I know that I can't undo
what's already been done,Copy !req
163. but I need you to know
I've always loved you, Pray.Copy !req
164. And I promise you I will be
there with you until the end.Copy !req
165. Mm.Copy !req
166. Now, look,
I'm-a go find your mamaCopy !req
167. before she spirals
into one of her fits.Copy !req
168. Charlene?Copy !req
169. I am here for you, too, Pray.Copy !req
170. Even though, sometimes, we have
not always seen eye-to-eye.Copy !req
171. - Where you going?
- Church.Copy !req
172. I got to get my soloist together
for Sunday service,Copy !req
173. and I could use some company.Copy !req
174. I'm not going
to that wretched place.Copy !req
175. Watch your mouth.Copy !req
176. A visit will do you some good.Copy !req
177. And you gonna like
the new pastor.Copy !req
178. Who is it?Copy !req
179. Vernon Jackson.Copy !req
180. You got to be kidding me.Copy !req
181. God forgives and God forgets.Copy !req
182. Come on!Copy !req
183. Hold on.
I got an idea.Copy !req
184. Devin, you come in
after Angela right here.Copy !req
185. - Let's try that.
Okay.Copy !req
186. Ooh, yes.Copy !req
187. Good job, good job.
Come on.Copy !req
188. Y'all better sing!Copy !req
189. Hi.Copy !req
190. Thank you.
Thank you, Sister Williams.Copy !req
191. Sister Simms.
Brother Walker.Copy !req
192. Pastor Vernon Jackson.Copy !req
193. I never thought
I'd be calling you that.Copy !req
194. It's good to see you,
Brother Pray.Copy !req
195. It's been, what— uh, 20 years?Copy !req
196. - 25.
- Mm.Copy !req
197. To what do I owe this pleasure?Copy !req
198. What if I said
I was here to see you?Copy !req
199. I'm married, Pray.Copy !req
200. Who'd you convince?Copy !req
201. Cheryl?Copy !req
202. Tina?Copy !req
203. Ebony.Copy !req
204. We have three kids.Copy !req
205. - Ebony Alexander?
- Mm-hmm.Copy !req
206. You married
my high school best friend?Copy !req
207. You know I told her everyCopy !req
208. intimate detail
of our love affair.Copy !req
209. She knows your truthCopy !req
210. and He knows your past.Copy !req
211. I'm living my truth.Copy !req
212. And I'm happy.
It took some time,Copy !req
213. but I resolved those feelings.Copy !req
214. With Ebony's help.
I made a choice,Copy !req
215. and I decided to give my life
over to Christ, fully.Copy !req
216. This is my home.Copy !req
217. I thought I was your home.Copy !req
218. That's what you said.Copy !req
219. When we were young,
that's what you said.Copy !req
220. Was that a lie?Copy !req
221. No, I-I... I loved you.Copy !req
222. And I'm not ashamed of what
you once meant to me,Copy !req
223. but you were asking me to step
away from the church, and I...Copy !req
224. No, no, no, no, the church
stepped away from me.Copy !req
225. And I'm not the only one.Copy !req
226. Every year I watch
hundreds of kidsCopy !req
227. flock to the city,Copy !req
228. looking for what they lostCopy !req
229. after the church
threw them away.Copy !req
230. That's what your church do...Copy !req
231. That's what your church did.Copy !req
232. To me.Copy !req
233. If you just got down
on your knees, I promise you...Copy !req
234. Oh, trust, I have
been down on my knees.Copy !req
235. And I have received
many blessings from many men.Copy !req
236. You know, it's never
too late for salvation.Copy !req
237. Yeah, well,
it's too late for me.Copy !req
238. I'm dying.Copy !req
239. - What?
- Yeah.Copy !req
240. How?Copy !req
241. You already know.Copy !req
242. Same thing
that's killing all of us.Copy !req
243. Us?Copy !req
244. Yeah.Copy !req
245. - Us.Copy !req
246. Wait, Pray. I-I want you
to come over tonight.Copy !req
247. Uh, for dinnerCopy !req
248. - with Ebony and the kids.
- That is a terrible idea.Copy !req
249. "Be angry and do not sin;Copy !req
250. "do not let the sun
go down on your anger,Copy !req
251. and do not give opportunity
to the devil."Copy !req
252. Really?Copy !req
253. You quoting scripture?Copy !req
254. I see you finally decided
to come out of your room.Copy !req
255. You want to talk?Copy !req
256. Mommy, I need you
to say something.Copy !req
257. There's nothing
to talk about, baby.Copy !req
258. What's done is done.Copy !req
259. I knew you were gonna
get that thingCopy !req
260. once you told me
you were gay.Copy !req
261. I saw Vernon today.Copy !req
262. I'm off to dinner
with him and Ebony tonight.Copy !req
263. Prayerful,Copy !req
264. I don't want you
starting any troubleCopy !req
265. with Pastor Vernon.Copy !req
266. He's been good
for this community.Copy !req
267. And he has helped me
out of some darker timesCopy !req
268. you could not imagine.Copy !req
269. What dark times?Copy !req
270. The times when I was so aloneCopy !req
271. I could barely get out of bed.Copy !req
272. The times when I was
so worried about youCopy !req
273. and what you were doingCopy !req
274. and-and what kind of trouble
you were getting into.Copy !req
275. You have no ideaCopy !req
276. how hurtful it is to have a sonCopy !req
277. who turns his back
on everything you taught him.Copy !req
278. Huh?
Who blatantlyCopy !req
279. refuses the word of God?Copy !req
280. I care about your soul, Pray.Copy !req
281. - I care about your soul.
- No,Copy !req
282. no, all you care aboutCopy !req
283. is what everybody at the churchCopy !req
284. thinks about you.Copy !req
285. Not me or my soul.Copy !req
286. If you did, you-you...Copy !req
287. you wouldn't have
let your husbandCopy !req
288. do the things that he did to me
for all those years.Copy !req
289. You know I didn't know
what Ernest was doing.Copy !req
290. I told you!
I told you everything!Copy !req
291. And he stopped, didn't he?Copy !req
292. Yeah, after I got old enough
to push him off me.Copy !req
293. - Well, what was I
supposed to do?
- You were supposedCopy !req
294. to believe me
and then leave him!Copy !req
295. I could not raise you on my own.Copy !req
296. - You needed a father.
- No.Copy !req
297. You needed a husbandCopy !req
298. to save face and keep up
appearances with the church.Copy !req
299. You have no idea
what it was likeCopy !req
300. for me to find my way
in this world.Copy !req
301. Now, your father
was a good manCopy !req
302. and I wish the Lord
hadn't taken him so young,Copy !req
303. but when he died,
I needed a man.Copy !req
304. Now, Ernest wasn't perfect,
but he provided for us.Copy !req
305. So, why don't you just...Copy !req
306. why don't you just move on?Copy !req
307. - I have moved on.
- Okay.Copy !req
308. Just let it be. I mean,
you've been gone 20 years.Copy !req
309. Let the past lie.Copy !req
310. Okay.Copy !req
311. Good job, everyone.Copy !req
312. I'll see you on Sunday
at worship.Copy !req
313. Okay.
Yes, ma'am.Copy !req
314. Do you want to walk home
together?Copy !req
315. Yeah, I'd like that.Copy !req
316. You always look so happy
when you're singing.Copy !req
317. I love to sing to the Lord.Copy !req
318. I wish I sang as good as you.Copy !req
319. You have a special gift, Pray.Copy !req
320. You really think I have a gift?Copy !req
321. You're my favorite singer.Copy !req
322. Didn't I tell these boys
to put away the hymnals?Copy !req
323. Prayerful!Copy !req
324. Oh, come on, Freddy.
You know this one.Copy !req
325. - I know! I know!
Yeah, let FreddyCopy !req
326. have his turn, honey.Copy !req
327. "And we know that
all things work togetherCopy !req
328. "for good to them
that love God,Copy !req
329. and to them who are the called
according to purpose."Copy !req
330. There you go.
- Hey, great job. That's my boy.Copy !req
331. - That's my son.
My turn,Copy !req
332. - my turn.
- Okay, let me
give you a good one.Copy !req
333. Uh... how aboutCopy !req
334. - Romans 13:8.
- Mm.Copy !req
335. "Owe no one anything except
to love each other; for the oneCopy !req
336. who loves another
has fulfilled the law."Copy !req
337. Oh, so good.
Oh. Great job.Copy !req
338. - Oh. Uh, honey...
- Oh.Copy !req
339. - we're-we're at dinner.
- I know,Copy !req
340. I know, um,
just give me a moment.Copy !req
341. You guys were amazing.
That was amazing.Copy !req
342. Hello? Yes.Copy !req
343. Oh. Okay.Copy !req
344. I'll be there in ten minutes.
Thank you.Copy !req
345. Mrs. Williams is near the end.Copy !req
346. I won't be long.
Uh,Copy !req
347. will you be here
when I get back, Pray?Copy !req
348. Of course he will.Copy !req
349. I could use some help
cleaning the dishes.Copy !req
350. Well, and you know I always
know the dish, darling.Copy !req
351. - Yes, you do.Copy !req
352. All right, you two behave.Copy !req
353. Okay, kids, clear your plates.Copy !req
354. Well, y'all raised some smart
and well-behaved children.Copy !req
355. - Mm. Thank you.Copy !req
356. I've raised a few myself,
although I doubt any of themCopy !req
357. - can recite Bible verses.
- Oh...Copy !req
358. Although they do know
all the lyricsCopy !req
359. to every Whitney and Janet song.Copy !req
360. Uh...Copy !req
361. so do I.Copy !req
362. You do remember thatCopy !req
363. - I had all the moves
back in the day, right?
- Mm.Copy !req
364. - Mm...
- Oh!Copy !req
365. Yes! Cheerleading captain,
prom queen.Copy !req
366. - Yeah, you still got it, girl.Copy !req
367. I can hear you thinking,Copy !req
368. "Why did that girl
marry Vernon?"Copy !req
369. Well, I do have to admitCopy !req
370. I had to fix my face
when Vernon told me.Copy !req
371. - Mm.
- Girl, you could've had anybody.Copy !req
372. Yeah.
Vernon is a good man.Copy !req
373. I believe in him.
What he's built, his mission,Copy !req
374. what he means to the community.Copy !req
375. See, Pray Tell, that's what
marriage is all about.Copy !req
376. You take the good with the bad.Copy !req
377. And so you just turn a blind eyeCopy !req
378. to the fact that
your husband is gay?Copy !req
379. I know my husband.
And I trust him.Copy !req
380. And I don't want
to rock this boat.Copy !req
381. But I do need your help.Copy !req
382. And I'm asking as an old friend.Copy !req
383. You notice how
there's five yearsCopy !req
384. between Cynthia and the baby?Copy !req
385. Yeah, it's because, uh...Copy !req
386. well, he wouldn't lay with me
in all that time.Copy !req
387. I know how you twoCopy !req
388. were together
back in the school days.Copy !req
389. And I hear how Vernon
talks to you.Copy !req
390. And I see how you look at him.Copy !req
391. But I do want to...Copy !req
392. I want to make him feel good.Copy !req
393. Ebony, you're asking meCopy !req
394. to tell you
how to pleasure your man?Copy !req
395. Yes.Copy !req
396. Sweetheart...Copy !req
397. - your husband is a homosexual.
- No.Copy !req
398. - He likes men.
- No.Copy !req
399. There's nothing you can do
to change that.Copy !req
400. No, he is a strong, good,
God-fearing man.Copy !req
401. The good Lord
wouldn't give VernonCopy !req
402. something that
he couldn't overcome.Copy !req
403. He is just as God made him.Copy !req
404. It's not a choice.Copy !req
405. But you are making a choice.Copy !req
406. - Why?
- Because I believe in marriage.Copy !req
407. How many marriages
that aren't as strong as oursCopy !req
408. are gonna break apart
if ours breaks apart?Copy !req
409. Your marriage is not strong.Copy !req
410. It's built on sinking sand.
I know, I know...Copy !req
411. that your church teaches you
that there's no higher callingCopy !req
412. than to stand by your man.Copy !req
413. Men created those lies
so that they could act outCopy !req
414. and then come back home
whenever they wanted to.Copy !req
415. What does that mean?
Hmm?Copy !req
416. That even in their own churches,Copy !req
417. Black folks worship a white man.Copy !req
418. Jesus didn't absolve our sins
through joy and peace.Copy !req
419. The crucifixion
was torture and pain.Copy !req
420. That's the Lord telling us
that life is violent.Copy !req
421. Life is cruel.Copy !req
422. Life hurts.Copy !req
423. But the more we hurt,Copy !req
424. the closer we are to God.Copy !req
425. Your god sounds
like a real asshole.Copy !req
426. Pray Tell.Copy !req
427. It's so hard.Copy !req
428. I need your help.Copy !req
429. Please.Copy !req
430. I can't...Copy !req
431. Baby, Mama's coming.Copy !req
432. Oh, hey, Pray.Copy !req
433. How'd it go?Copy !req
434. Mrs. Williams passed peacefully.Copy !req
435. Just never get used to it.Copy !req
436. - No, you don't.
- So, how'd it go in here?Copy !req
437. Did you spill any secrets?Copy !req
438. I didn't have to.Copy !req
439. You know, it's a nice night out.Copy !req
440. Let's go for a walk.Copy !req
441. I haven't been here in ages.Copy !req
442. Does it look different?Copy !req
443. The only thing
that's changed is us.Copy !req
444. The years have been
kind to you, Pastor Vernon.Copy !req
445. Well, thank you.Copy !req
446. No, you're supposed to say
"You, too."Copy !req
447. I see some things never change.Copy !req
448. I got to teach you everything.Copy !req
449. Well, from what I recall,Copy !req
450. we taught each other a lot
right here.Copy !req
451. All the things
that really matter.Copy !req
452. I've missed you so much.Copy !req
453. Fix it, Jesus.Copy !req
454. I've never stopped
loving you, Pray.Copy !req
455. Dear Heavenly Father,
I ask you to comeCopy !req
456. and save Vernon from himself.Copy !req
457. Forgive him for the wreckage
that he's about to create,Copy !req
458. and give him some sense,
in Jesus' name. Amen.Copy !req
459. Don't be flip.
This is my life, Pray.Copy !req
460. What do you want, Vernon?Copy !req
461. Seeing you again.Copy !req
462. Reflecting on our past.Copy !req
463. You have reawakened something
within me.Copy !req
464. You were right
all those years ago.Copy !req
465. I should have gone with you.Copy !req
466. But I was too scared.Copy !req
467. But you have a wife
and kids.Copy !req
468. You-you can't abandon them.Copy !req
469. You asked me what I want.Copy !req
470. This is what I want.Copy !req
471. I don't... I don't have
much longer.Copy !req
472. I don't care.Copy !req
473. I just want to be with you.Copy !req
474. But you have your family
and your, and your congregation.Copy !req
475. I can't... I can't let you
blow up your lifeCopy !req
476. for six months with me.Copy !req
477. That's my choice to make.Copy !req
478. I wish I'd made it back then,
but I-I'm making it now.Copy !req
479. I'm dying, Vernon.Copy !req
480. I'm dying of AIDS.Copy !req
481. I was with you in the beginning.Copy !req
482. Let me be there for you
in the end.Copy !req
483. You are the loveCopy !req
484. of my life, Pray.Copy !req
485. Don't you want our story
to have a different ending?Copy !req
486. Rewriting... my past
is not gonna change my future.Copy !req
487. I know how my story ends.Copy !req
488. You want to rewrite yours, fine,Copy !req
489. but I cannot hold the pen.Copy !req
490. Pray,Copy !req
491. we can rewrite our story.Copy !req
492. I'm asking you
to have faith in me.Copy !req
493. In us.Copy !req
494. "Faith without works is dead."Copy !req
495. James 2:26.Copy !req
496. I'm going home on Sunday.Copy !req
497. The bus leaves at 5:00 p.m.Copy !req
498. I'll be there.Copy !req
499. Well, no, I didn't meanCopy !req
500. to call you no clucking duck.Copy !req
501. What I meant was, like,
a cackling hen.Copy !req
502. - No, no, Donna, Donna,Copy !req
503. wait a minute, honey,
don't cry, don't cry.Copy !req
504. Please.
Listen to me.Copy !req
505. - Mm-hmm.
- Mm!Copy !req
506. Guess we all got our secrets.Copy !req
507. - Don't tell your aunts.
- I'm-a tell you likeCopy !req
508. - you used to always tell me.
- What?Copy !req
509. - God knows all.
- Yes.Copy !req
510. - Let me ask you something.Copy !req
511. When you lived here,
how many timesCopy !req
512. would you say you snuck off
to the GreyhoundCopy !req
513. to go to New York?Copy !req
514. Every other week, I guess.Copy !req
515. - Uh-huh.
- You know, wheneverCopy !req
516. - I could afford to.
- Mm-hmm.Copy !req
517. I'd be sitting in that windowCopy !req
518. waiting for your butt to
get back all weekend.Copy !req
519. And one day you just didn't.Copy !req
520. You didn't start no mess over at
Pastor Vernon's house, did you?Copy !req
521. That house is plenty messy
all by itself without my help.Copy !req
522. You know what I love
about you people?Copy !req
523. Every damn... every one of youCopy !req
524. has a secret that you thinkCopy !req
525. the other people
don't know about.Copy !req
526. But everybody knows everything.Copy !req
527. Because peace is more important
than truth.Copy !req
528. It's because the lies
make you feel alive.Copy !req
529. It's the lies that keep
the fires inside of you burning.Copy !req
530. They're the only thing
in this godforsaken townCopy !req
531. that are real.Copy !req
532. Is this why you came back
after all these years?Copy !req
533. To tell me off?Copy !req
534. To cuss out your own mother?Copy !req
535. I didn't curse you.Copy !req
536. Y'all cursed me,Copy !req
537. told me that
I would never be blessed.Copy !req
538. I only left because
it wasn't safe for me here.Copy !req
539. And now I've come back
to make things right.Copy !req
540. But I need you, Mommy...Copy !req
541. to admit your faults.Copy !req
542. How you let that man
do what he did to me.Copy !req
543. How you tossed me outCopy !req
544. and chose the church over me
when all I did...Copy !req
545. was tell you my truth.Copy !req
546. I know, I know.Copy !req
547. I know I did wrong by you.Copy !req
548. I was scaredCopy !req
549. that I would lose everything
that I had ever known.Copy !req
550. You know,
that's my greatest shame.Copy !req
551. I knew...Copy !req
552. I did know that nothing
was ever wrong...Copy !req
553. Nothing was ever wrong
with my beautiful,Copy !req
554. headstrong, talented boy.Copy !req
555. - I am sorry.Copy !req
556. Could you forgive me?Copy !req
557. Because I-I really...Copy !req
558. I really want to do good
this time.Copy !req
559. I-I do.Copy !req
560. I love you so much.Copy !req
561. I love you, too.Copy !req
562. Okay...Copy !req
563. can I ask you something?Copy !req
564. You believe in salvation,
don't you?Copy !req
565. In God?Copy !req
566. Uh...Copy !req
567. the way that you do, like...Copy !req
568. with the big man
up in the heavens and stuff?Copy !req
569. No.Copy !req
570. But I do believe in a God.Copy !req
571. How is he?Copy !req
572. I mean, what's he like,
your God?Copy !req
573. He is kind.Copy !req
574. - He is loving.
- Uh-huh.Copy !req
575. He is forgiving.Copy !req
576. That is the God
that's inside me.Copy !req
577. Yes. He is.Copy !req
578. He is.Copy !req
579. Would you, uh...Copy !req
580. visit the church with me,
one more time?Copy !req
581. I-I mean, I think it would,
I think it would give us peace.Copy !req
582. I don't know about that.Copy !req
583. - Why?Copy !req
584. I don't know that I need
to be up in the Lord's house,Copy !req
585. knowing how the saints
feel about me and my kind.Copy !req
586. Well, why don't you go
for the music?Copy !req
587. Come on, now, you know you were
always the star in the choir.Copy !req
588. You know you had the best voice.Copy !req
589. My God gave you that gift.Copy !req
590. Please?Copy !req
591. Ple... All right.Copy !req
592. - Come on.Copy !req
593. Yeah!Copy !req
594. Praise Him!Copy !req
595. Good morning.Copy !req
596. Good morning.
- Ooh, I said good morning!Copy !req
597. Good morning!
- Whoo!Copy !req
598. For our next song,
I would like to inviteCopy !req
599. - a special guest to join us.
- Mm.Copy !req
600. - He was raised in this church.
- Mm-hmm.Copy !req
601. His voice used
to fill this church.Copy !req
602. Yes.
- It's been a very long timeCopy !req
603. since he's been here.Copy !req
604. But the Lord has
brought him back to us.Copy !req
605. Won't he do it!Copy !req
606. - Amen.
Amen.Copy !req
607. Prayerful.Copy !req
608. Will you join us, please?Copy !req
609. Go on, now.
You've been summoned.Copy !req
610. - Mm-hmm.
Yes.Copy !req
611. - Amen!
- [cheering, applause]Copy !req
612. - Hallelujah!
- Uh...Copy !req
613. "This Day"?Copy !req
614. Hallelujah.Copy !req
615. - Oh, that's right.Copy !req
616. So you basically came into townCopy !req
617. for a farewell performance,Copy !req
618. and just tore us all up.Copy !req
619. Child, you ain't
changed one bit.Copy !req
620. So, uh, how did things go
with your mama?Copy !req
621. Good, good, I think.Copy !req
622. You know, I'm a grown man now.Copy !req
623. I'm not a child anymore,
and she's her own woman,Copy !req
624. and I forgive that woman.Copy !req
625. I forgive her.Copy !req
626. Do you forgive me?Copy !req
627. For what?Copy !req
628. For not protecting you.Copy !req
629. Pray, I knew,Copy !req
630. and I didn't... I did nothing!Copy !req
631. I'm sorry, though.Copy !req
632. - It's okay. It's okay.
- I'm sorry.Copy !req
633. - Is that why you wanted
to have chicken and waffles?Copy !req
634. For absolution before I go?Copy !req
635. You...Copy !req
636. You stop that silly talk.Copy !req
637. When things get tough for you
in New York,Copy !req
638. I will be coming thereCopy !req
639. so that you can feel your family
in those last days.Copy !req
640. More than that,Copy !req
641. I want you to get
everything you wantCopy !req
642. exactly the way
you want it to be.Copy !req
643. - Power of attorney?
- Mm-hmm.Copy !req
644. Now, I know you got people there
who love you and all, you know,Copy !req
645. but you know how it works.Copy !req
646. The law won't let them
make decisions for youCopy !req
647. because they're not blood.Copy !req
648. Now, you sign these papersCopy !req
649. and I will make sure that you
get everything that you want.Copy !req
650. I will come there
and I will see it through.Copy !req
651. So tell me,
what are your final wishes?Copy !req
652. I know you've been thinking
about this already, now.Copy !req
653. What, you... you want
a parade or something?Copy !req
654. No. No.Copy !req
655. The opposite of that.Copy !req
656. I... want to die
peacefully at home.Copy !req
657. And then I want to be cremated.Copy !req
658. So where do you want us
to put your ashes?Copy !req
659. I want you to buy
a bunch of heart locketsCopy !req
660. and fill them
with a little piece of me.Copy !req
661. And give them to all my friendsCopy !req
662. and one for you
and Aunt Latrice and Mommy.Copy !req
663. And then you'll all have
a piece of me, wherever you go.Copy !req
664. Y'all ain't never
getting rid of me.Copy !req
665. Okay.Copy !req
666. You let me do all of that
for you, Pray.Copy !req
667. Let me love you now
like I wasn't strong enoughCopy !req
668. to love you then.Copy !req
669. You deserve that.Copy !req
670. Oh, there's this bossy bitch
named ElektraCopy !req
671. who's gonna think that she
deserves one of these lockets.Copy !req
672. I want you to tell her
that I said from the graveCopy !req
673. - that she can kiss
my entire ass.Copy !req
674. Okay?Copy !req
675. Only good thing about dying
is that I won't have to listenCopy !req
676. - to her bullshit no more.Copy !req
677. Cheers.Copy !req
678. Oh, mm-hmm.Copy !req
679. I don't know, I think Elvis
is pretty cool.Copy !req
680. Please. Elvis got nothingCopy !req
681. on Jackie Wilson.Copy !req
682. Have you heard
"Lonely Teardrops"?Copy !req
683. Have you seen her mug shots?Copy !req
684. Wait, who-de-who?
Left Eye.Copy !req
685. I heard that
when she got arrested that day,Copy !req
686. she walked out of that houseCopy !req
687. with the thing
still under her eye.Copy !req
688. - She's a G.
That is so inspiring.Copy !req
689. - She's a hero.
Hold on, what about
his sneakers, though?Copy !req
690. - Huh?
Baby,
if you ever cheat on me,Copy !req
691. I'm gonna take all your sneakers
and your clothes, too,Copy !req
692. and I'm gonna put them
in the tubCopy !req
693. and I'm gonna light them
on fire,Copy !req
694. but not with gasoline.Copy !req
695. I'm-a do it with essential oils,Copy !req
696. so you think about me
when they're burning.Copy !req
697. - Oh...
- Okay, shall we?Copy !req
698. Yes.Copy !req
699. Dear Heavenly Father,
we thank youCopy !req
700. for this food and drink
that we're about to receive.Copy !req
701. In a world
where so many are hungry,Copy !req
702. may we eat with humble hearts.Copy !req
703. In a world where
so many are lonely,Copy !req
704. may we love with open arms.Copy !req
705. May we all be fed,
may we all be healed,Copy !req
706. may we all be loved,
may we all be at peace.Copy !req
707. - Amen.
Amen.Copy !req
708. - Ah...Copy !req
709. - Hey, woman. Hey, trans.
- Soup, please.Copy !req
710. - Mmm-mmm.
- Hey, trans woman.Copy !req
711. - This is my mama's recipe.
- Ooh, this shit looks good.Copy !req
712. - Just need a little broth.
- Hey.Copy !req
