1. Mr Shelby, you're not yourself.
I should call a doctor.Copy !req
2. It's just myself talking to myself
about myself.Copy !req
3. Michael, you're going to New York.Copy !req
4. Why?Copy !req
5. Because the company has business
to attend to in America.Copy !req
6. You knew I was going to be shot...Copy !req
7. and you chose not to tell me.Copy !req
8. I chose my mum.Copy !req
9. Thomas Shelby,
Labour Party, 48,564!Copy !req
10. I've been to a doctor on your behalf.Copy !req
11. It starts when you stop. When you rest.Copy !req
12. Mr Shelby, you're meant to be resting.Copy !req
13. I have learnt something, Frances.Copy !req
14. There's no rest for me in this world.Copy !req
15. Perhaps in the next.Copy !req
16. Arthur.Copy !req
17. "We cannot give you the assurance
you are asking for.Copy !req
18. "We expect payment in full."Copy !req
19. Here's my favourite part.Copy !req
20. "We have never even heard
of your people,Copy !req
21. "so we are not afraid of your threats."Copy !req
22. And they've signed it
"the Angels of Retribution".Copy !req
23. Hm.Copy !req
24. They say
they haven't even heard of us.Copy !req
25. So tell Aberama and Isiah to
introduce themselves.Copy !req
26. And, Finn...Copy !req
27. you stay out of it.Copy !req
28. Yeah.Copy !req
29. Wait.Copy !req
30. Wait, wait. Say that again.Copy !req
31. No.Copy !req
32. No, that cannot be possible!Copy !req
33. Peter, my beautiful pilot...Copy !req
34. Now will you please fly me
and my winnings back to England?Copy !req
35. Ten spoonfuls of sugar for me, please.Copy !req
36. Where's that full one?Copy !req
37. Look, Ruby.Copy !req
38. Daddy's back from his call.Copy !req
39. Everything's going to be all right now.Copy !req
40. Oh, no, no.Copy !req
41. No, no, no, no, no, no.Copy !req
42. Oh, no, no.Copy !req
43. Ah!Copy !req
44. Hello?Copy !req
45. Arthur! Arthur, where's Tommy?Copy !req
46. Just get to him and tell him
that we've lost the lot.Copy !req
47. Stay there. You stay put.Copy !req
48. You'll hear from Tommy.Copy !req
49. Arthur, what are you talking about?
How is that possible?Copy !req
50. It's possible because,
this morningCopy !req
51. in New York City at 6am,Copy !req
52. the Wall Street Stock Exchange crashedCopy !req
53. like a steam train.Copy !req
54. We were most definitely on board.Copy !req
55. Fuck it.Copy !req
56. - Oi! Come on, get changed!
- Jesus Christ!Copy !req
57. Bring the car round!Copy !req
58. We've got to get out of here.
Hurry up. Come on!Copy !req
59. I'm going!Copy !req
60. Change of plan.
We're not going to London any more.Copy !req
61. - We're going straight to Birmingham.
- There are other passengers.Copy !req
62. Not any more.Copy !req
63. If you're going to England,
I'm coming with you.Copy !req
64. - No. No.
- I love you, you love me.Copy !req
65. - That's the truth.
- Gina, wait, come on.Copy !req
66. I want to meet your family.Copy !req
67. No, you don't.Copy !req
68. Argh!Copy !req
69. Now you've heard of us.Copy !req
70. Come on.Copy !req
71. Couch. Couch!Copy !req
72. Put something down for the blood.
My sister'll fucking kill me.Copy !req
73. Be fucking careful.Copy !req
74. She spends thousands of pounds
on this shit.Copy !req
75. Argh!Copy !req
76. - Get me some booze.
- Ah!Copy !req
77. Just fucking get the thing out of me
and sew me up.Copy !req
78. Just do it.Copy !req
79. Peaky boy, give me your blade.Copy !req
80. That's enough.Copy !req
81. Don't want you throwing up
on your sister's furniture.Copy !req
82. - You know what you're doing?
- I've done this a thousand times.Copy !req
83. I once took a bullet from between
two ribs, one inch from the heart.Copy !req
84. Mind you, it was a horse.Copy !req
85. And the horse did die.Copy !req
86. Hold him. Hold him.Copy !req
87. There you go.Copy !req
88. Just a little one.Copy !req
89. - What the fuck is going on?
- Oh, fuck.Copy !req
90. Hello, Ada.Copy !req
91. Get out, both of you.Copy !req
92. Push this on the wound.Copy !req
93. - Keep up the pressure.
- Get out.Copy !req
94. I'm so sorry, Ada.Copy !req
95. They broke a statue of some thin woman.Copy !req
96. Fucking statues.Copy !req
97. What has Tommy told you?Copy !req
98. - Shelbys stay out of the sporting stuff.
- What?Copy !req
99. - To maintain his fucking reputation?
- Oi!Copy !req
100. You listen to me.Copy !req
101. We've got a chance.Copy !req
102. Tommy has given us that chance.Copy !req
103. He's got power, we've got money
and our past is left behind us.Copy !req
104. And you've got a precious young life,
Finn, you fucking idiot.Copy !req
105. Three inches to the left
and that would have been gone.Copy !req
106. You've got nothing to prove, Finn.Copy !req
107. You have got nothing to prove.Copy !req
108. Daddy! Daddy!Copy !req
109. Come here, you. Come here. Come here.
Come here. Come here. Come here.Copy !req
110. Ooh!Copy !req
111. Now, what have you been up to, eh?Copy !req
112. Get it done, Johnny.Copy !req
113. All right, you heard the man. Let's go.Copy !req
114. Where's Charles?Copy !req
115. He's in the wagon. He won't come out.Copy !req
116. He heard Johnny talking Rokker.Copy !req
117. He understands more Gypsy
than we think.Copy !req
118. He heard him say you shot the horse.Copy !req
119. I told him it was mercy. I said
it's what you do when a horse gets sick.Copy !req
120. He doesn't understand.Copy !req
121. Dad, why did you shoot him?Copy !req
122. Charlie, get out here now.
Let's get it done.Copy !req
123. Charles? Come here.Copy !req
124. Sit down.Copy !req
125. Now, listen to me.Copy !req
126. Your horse was sick. He was in pain.Copy !req
127. The vet couldn't do anything,
even Curly couldn't do anything.Copy !req
128. I put him to sleep.Copy !req
129. - It's what you do.
- No!Copy !req
130. It's what you do.Copy !req
131. Shoot horses, shoot people.
Everybody says.Copy !req
132. Dangerous, my beautiful horse.Copy !req
133. Too wild to race.Copy !req
134. Wouldn't take the reins or the whip.Copy !req
135. Should have been a war horse.Copy !req
136. Got tired of the pasture.Copy !req
137. Couldn't stick the peace and quiet,
gave up on life...Copy !req
138. and is now free.Copy !req
139. In the bleak...Copy !req
140. You're crying.Copy !req
141. Tom...Copy !req
142. I'm sorry.Copy !req
143. I didn't know your boy spoke Rokker.Copy !req
144. Fill it in, Johnny.Copy !req
145. It's fine.Copy !req
146. I've called the house, the office.Copy !req
147. But if I tell you...Copy !req
148. you won't believe it...Copy !req
149. so I'll show you.Copy !req
150. Huh?Copy !req
151. I told Michael on Friday
this was going to happen.Copy !req
152. Yeah.Copy !req
153. Fucking Michael... said he was advised
by the broker that prices would rebound.Copy !req
154. Everybody was told the same thing.Copy !req
155. He held on.Copy !req
156. - Michael held on?
- Yeah.Copy !req
157. Michael.Copy !req
158. - Michael held on?
- Yeah.Copy !req
159. Michael held on...Copy !req
160. and carried on dancing and playing...Copy !req
161. and fucking in the snow.Copy !req
162. Charlie!Copy !req
163. Charlie, come out here now!Copy !req
164. Kid never fucking listens.Copy !req
165. Never listens, Lizzie.Copy !req
166. What do I have to do
to make people fucking listen to me?Copy !req
167. Holy fuck.Copy !req
168. What do we do now, Tommy, eh?Copy !req
169. What do we do?Copy !req
170. Lizzie, you go with Arthur to Birmingham,
you stay in the Midland Hotel.Copy !req
171. Arthur, call a full meeting of
the board of directors tomorrow at noon.Copy !req
172. A full fucking meeting.Copy !req
173. What about today, eh?
What's wrong with today, Tom?Copy !req
174. - I need to do some thinking.
- Oh, yeah.Copy !req
175. Oh, you do that best on your own,Copy !req
176. - don't you, eh?
- I won't be on my own. Never on my own.Copy !req
177. Lizzie, you have the driver
come back tomorrow.Copy !req
178. And, Arthur, tell my boy...Copy !req
179. that sometimes death is a kindness.Copy !req
180. Come on.Copy !req
181. What now?Copy !req
182. What am I, a genie?Copy !req
183. You summon me up
with your little bottle of dope.Copy !req
184. I take it for the pain, to keep warm.Copy !req
185. Is that what it's for?Copy !req
186. The warmth?Copy !req
187. The warmth.Copy !req
188. All this time.Copy !req
189. I know.Copy !req
190. Our love still remains.Copy !req
191. But you have to listen
to the voices that you hear.Copy !req
192. Do what they tell you to do.Copy !req
193. Too much to do, Grace.Copy !req
194. The kids.Copy !req
195. I need to say goodbye.Copy !req
196. I need to sleep.Copy !req
197. Just think, Tom.Copy !req
198. Linda!Copy !req
199. Oh, there you are, eh?Copy !req
200. You're the chairman, Arthur,
so start acting like one.Copy !req
201. Chairman, am I, hm?Copy !req
202. No.Copy !req
203. I'm the fucking doorman, Linda, hm?Copy !req
204. And you ain't coming in here tonight,
love, dressed like that.Copy !req
205. Tommy made me chairman so that...Copy !req
206. he could stay clean.Copy !req
207. It's called an arrangement.Copy !req
208. It's an opportunity.Copy !req
209. I know who I am, Linda.Copy !req
210. I know who I am and I'm all right with it.Copy !req
211. Finally.Copy !req
212. I can live with it.Copy !req
213. I need you to be all right with it.Copy !req
214. I need you to be all right with it, eh?Copy !req
215. What is it, eh?Copy !req
216. And what do you want, hm?Copy !req
217. What, do you want the chairman?
Do you? Hmm?Copy !req
218. With his fancy briefcase
and his gold fountain pen, eh?Copy !req
219. What do you want?Copy !req
220. Chairman...Copy !req
221. or doorman? Hm?Copy !req
222. You think we can fuck and it'll be OK
and I'll be quiet. Well, I won't.Copy !req
223. Every week, your brother's down in London,
making out he's fucking Robin Hood,Copy !req
224. champion of the people, while you're
up here running the racket for him.Copy !req
225. And according to your "arrangement",
if anything should happen,Copy !req
226. it'd be you who takes the blame,
does the time or swings for it.Copy !req
227. - And what do you want?
- I want you...Copy !req
228. to take the opportunityCopy !req
229. that God and the New York Stock Exchange
has presented to you.Copy !req
230. Mr Shelby,
the meeting will be starting soon.Copy !req
231. Yeah. All right.Copy !req
232. Be right there.Copy !req
233. Thank you, Edna.Copy !req
234. And shut the door.Copy !req
235. OK, now...Copy !req
236. Mmm, they're nice.Copy !req
237. let's begin.Copy !req
238. Yesterday, as you all know,
there was a fucking terrible...Copy !req
239. There was a terrible disaster. Hm?Copy !req
240. It wasn't just for us.Copy !req
241. It was for the whole world.Copy !req
242. Happened in New York.Copy !req
243. That's where it happened.Copy !req
244. And it slowly spread to London.Copy !req
245. And then to, er, fucking Hong Kong. Hm?Copy !req
246. Whole thing... whole thing went up.Copy !req
247. Well, actually the whole thing
went fucking down but...Copy !req
248. we wasn't the only ones hurt by this.Copy !req
249. Whole world is hurt.Copy !req
250. A lot of people.Copy !req
251. In the papers.Copy !req
252. It's all over the news.Copy !req
253. - Everyone's talking about it.
- Arthur?Copy !req
254. Shouldn't we just wait for Thomas?Copy !req
255. Polly, Arthur's now
the chairman of the board.Copy !req
256. Er, Mr Chairman,
perhaps while we wait for Thomas,Copy !req
257. I might lighten the gloom and express, as
a relatively new member of this company,Copy !req
258. what a pleasure it is to be in a boardroom
that has so many females in it,Copy !req
259. and all females who are both
sharp-witted and decorative.Copy !req
260. Yeah, well, we're a very modern
company, Mr Greene.Copy !req
261. Indeed.Copy !req
262. Although there are still some among us
who cling to their old-fashioned values.Copy !req
263. How far have we got?Copy !req
264. We've established
that ladies are decorative.Copy !req
265. We've only just sat down, Tom.Copy !req
266. Actually, um, Arthur has some documents
that he'd like to hand out.Copy !req
267. Yeah?Copy !req
268. What documents?Copy !req
269. I was just explaining to everyone, Tom,
that, um, well, we're fucked.Copy !req
270. - Ain't that right? Hm?
- Yes and no.Copy !req
271. It is true that a large proportion
of the company's fundsCopy !req
272. were invested in American stocks
and shares.Copy !req
273. Invested or hidden?Copy !req
274. All investments are approved
by the board, Linda.Copy !req
275. Only the ones that went
through the books, Thomas.Copy !req
276. Linda, after this meeting there will
be another meeting, for just family.Copy !req
277. Did we vote on this?Copy !req
278. Arthur?Copy !req
279. "Arthur, can't you control your wife?"Copy !req
280. We are a very modern company, Mr Greene.Copy !req
281. To be precise,
everything we channelledCopy !req
282. through the New York Stock Exchange
is now offering a returnCopy !req
283. of ten cents to the dollar.Copy !req
284. And the Nolan Bank of America,Copy !req
285. where we invested our fluidity,Copy !req
286. is offering five cents to the dollar
on all deposits.Copy !req
287. Yeah.Copy !req
288. - There is hope.
- Why?Copy !req
289. What have you got in there,
a magic wand?Copy !req
290. As nonexecutive director of the company,
I need the permission from the chairmanCopy !req
291. to present my strategy to the board.Copy !req
292. Permission granted, Tom.Copy !req
293. The Peaky Blinders are coming.Copy !req
294. The Peaky Blinders are coming.Copy !req
295. Micky,
the Peaky Blinders are coming.Copy !req
296. Ladies and gents, Peaky Blinders are
on their way. Please vacate. Thank you.Copy !req
297. - Good to see you.
- All right, Mr Shelby.Copy !req
298. - Mr Shelby...
- Yeah?Copy !req
299. thank you for what you did.Copy !req
300. What did I do?Copy !req
301. He was going to evict us,
that bastard Fellows.Copy !req
302. Now he's cut our rent in half.Copy !req
303. Good. Glad to hear it.
Glad to hear it.Copy !req
304. All right?Copy !req
305. How far can we go, Mr Shelby,
with this beautiful dream?Copy !req
306. - All the way, brother. All the way.
- Revolution, man.Copy !req
307. This crash, Mr Shelby. They're saying
they're gonna cut my hours.Copy !req
308. - Yeah. Where do you work?
- Greenhams Engineering.Copy !req
309. Greenham brothers. I know them.
They're not gonna cut your hours.Copy !req
310. God bless you. God bless you both.Copy !req
311. - Enjoy your drink.
- Gentlemen and ladies.Copy !req
312. If you'll all move into the saloon bar,Copy !req
313. where you will all be served
a free pint of stingo.Copy !req
314. Any man who served in France
gets a brandy chaser.Copy !req
315. And in spite of what you're reading
in the newspapers,Copy !req
316. I want to hear singing and laughing.
Fuck the stock market.Copy !req
317. Fuck the stock market!Copy !req
318. They backed the wrong horses,
so fucking what, eh?Copy !req
319. Thank you, Mr Shelby. At last,
a politician who gets things done.Copy !req
320. You're welcome, brother, you're welcome.Copy !req
321. - Get down off the furniture.
- Sorry, Ada.Copy !req
322. I was getting excited, wasn't I?Copy !req
323. Right.Copy !req
324. Can I begin this family meeting
with a proposal?Copy !req
325. From now on,
we find somewhere else to meet.Copy !req
326. Your husband believes that being seenCopy !req
327. mixing with the common people
is good politics.Copy !req
328. Hmm. Well, if this is our campaign
for socialism,Copy !req
329. perhaps next time, Polly, you won't
wear earrings worth more than the pub.Copy !req
330. Right. Family meeting. First item.Copy !req
331. This.Copy !req
332. Dug out of our Finn's arm yesterdayCopy !req
333. by Aberama Gold using your gin
and a razor blade.Copy !req
334. Finn?Copy !req
335. He says they were sent to Limehouse.Copy !req
336. Chinatown.Copy !req
337. Sent by fucking who?Copy !req
338. Sent by me.Copy !req
339. I told Finn to stay out of this.
He obviously didn't listen.Copy !req
340. Oh, Tommy, sweetheart, I listen to you.Copy !req
341. I listen to you when you tell me
no more sport for anyone named Shelby.Copy !req
342. I listen to you
when you make me promises.Copy !req
343. What's in Chinatown, Tommy?
What the fuck is going on?Copy !req
344. £50,000.Copy !req
345. In cash.Copy !req
346. He said they were sent to Chinatown
to kill somebody.Copy !req
347. That kid needs educating, Tommy,
really does.Copy !req
348. Jesus Christ, Tommy!Copy !req
349. - It was a particular opportunity.
- A particular opportunityCopy !req
350. presented to me in confidence.
I dealt with it in confidence.Copy !req
351. But you told Polly.Copy !req
352. Tommy told me there was
a pimp in East London who sold kids.Copy !req
353. Fucking kids, Lizzie, eh? Hm?Copy !req
354. This pimp was blackmailing a senior member
of the House of Lords, a very wealthy man.Copy !req
355. Now this pimp is lying in a ditch,Copy !req
356. covered in flies.Copy !req
357. World's a better place.Copy !req
358. Holy fuck! So now your business
is improving the world?Copy !req
359. Sometimes, Ada...Copy !req
360. killing is a kindness.Copy !req
361. Hm?Copy !req
362. The man we did the job for
is a High Court judge.Copy !req
363. We received intelligence from
a senior police officer in Scotland Yard.Copy !req
364. I've made lots of new friends in London.
Men with influence.Copy !req
365. The police felt the same way
about this pimp as we did.Copy !req
366. He wasn't worth a trial.
The coppers cleared the streets for us.Copy !req
367. This was work commissioned
by a High Court judge, by Scotland YardCopy !req
368. and by the House of Lords.Copy !req
369. It's a particular opportunity.
It's not to be repeated.Copy !req
370. - And it was the right thing to do.
- Fucking right.Copy !req
371. Lizzie, you need to understand.Copy !req
372. That you tell Polly, not me.Copy !req
373. You need to understand that the corridors
of Westminster are very dimly lit.Copy !req
374. And for those who make the rules,
there are no rules.Copy !req
375. We own the ropes.
Who's going to hang us now, eh?Copy !req
376. We? We own the ropes, do we?Copy !req
377. Lizzie, Lizzie, if Finn had've listened
to me, you wouldn't have known.Copy !req
378. When we go home, I'll explain.Copy !req
379. I can't be bothered
with this shit.Copy !req
380. So...Copy !req
381. Tommy Shelby MP. Business as usual.Copy !req
382. The strategy I outlined earlierCopy !req
383. to rebuild the conventional part
of this business will take time.Copy !req
384. - In the meantime...
- Just business as fucking usual.Copy !req
385. In the meantime,
it is fortunate that we have maintainedCopy !req
386. other sources of cash income.Copy !req
387. Because until the stock market
recovers, cash is king.Copy !req
388. And cash we have.Copy !req
389. No-one is gonna hang you, Tommy.Copy !req
390. You're gonna hang yourself.Copy !req
391. Someone has to pay for them
paintings on your wall, Ada.Copy !req
392. Yeah, bye-bye, Ada.Copy !req
393. Tommy, you need to go easy on Ada.Copy !req
394. Polly...Copy !req
395. when am I ever not easy on Ada, eh?Copy !req
396. Thomas, the thing is, Ada...Copy !req
397. She's pregnant.Copy !req
398. Ada's what?Copy !req
399. These days, people tell me things
without even speaking.Copy !req
400. Wait a minute.Copy !req
401. Wait a minute.Copy !req
402. Ada's fucking pregnant? Hm?Copy !req
403. And, Polly, you need to reassure Ada
that it's 1929, times have changed,Copy !req
404. we've a lot to do, and no-one gives a fuck
who the father is.Copy !req
405. Really?Copy !req
406. I already know who the father is.Copy !req
407. But we've had enough shocks for one day.Copy !req
408. OK.Copy !req
409. All right, go on, then.Copy !req
410. How long you known about Ada, huh?Copy !req
411. I know her doctor.Copy !req
412. He calls me.Copy !req
413. Yeah, longer than me.Copy !req
414. Have a look at this.Copy !req
415. What's that funny writing on there?Copy !req
416. Chinese.Copy !req
417. Ah, right.Copy !req
418. What is it? Hmm?Copy !req
419. Bad news?Copy !req
420. Maybe.Copy !req
421. Angels of Retribution?Copy !req
422. Yeah.Copy !req
423. Burn the letter they sent.Copy !req
424. It's already done.Copy !req
425. Look at that, Tom. Hm?Copy !req
426. Pulled from our brother, eh?Copy !req
427. Finally took a first bullet.Copy !req
428. No-one fucking listens to me.Copy !req
429. Here, give it here.Copy !req
430. I'll keep it for him.Copy !req
431. I still have my first one.Copy !req
432. Arthur, you can tell our comrades
they can come back in.Copy !req
433. Where are you going, brother?Copy !req
434. The huge losses
on the British Stock ExchangeCopy !req
435. will bite into our economy
for the foreseeable future.Copy !req
436. I therefore must ask the trade unions
to possess understanding.Copy !req
437. The need for their flexibility
and cooperation is paramountCopy !req
438. in the coming months as we attempt
to rebuild this great nation.Copy !req
439. Mr Thomas Shelby.Copy !req
440. Thank you, Mr Speaker.Copy !req
441. My right honourable friend,
the member for Epping,Copy !req
442. asks that following the crash,Copy !req
443. trade union members be more flexible
when carrying out their duties.Copy !req
444. What he's really asking
is that the working man carry the can.Copy !req
445. The grand casino in Monte Carlo
is a small and timid affairCopy !req
446. when compared to the wild games of chance
being played in London and New YorkCopy !req
447. by gamblers in silk gloves and beaver
hats, who, when they lose their bets,Copy !req
448. turn around and ask the shoe-shine
to pay for it.Copy !req
449. Well, on behalf of the shoe-shines
and can carriers of South BirminghamCopy !req
450. and all across Great Britain,
I would suggestCopy !req
451. that those who so recklessly lost
their fortunes on the capitalist lotteryCopy !req
452. learn to shine their own shoes...Copy !req
453. carry their own can
and pay their own bills.Copy !req
454. Mr Shelby?Copy !req
455. I just wanted to say
how much I enjoyed your speech.Copy !req
456. You speak very eloquently.Copy !req
457. Thank you.Copy !req
458. My name's Mosley, by the way.
Oswald Mosley.Copy !req
459. Yeah, I know who you are.Copy !req
460. My constituency borders yours.Copy !req
461. And let me just say,
you've come to my attention.Copy !req
462. Come.Copy !req
463. Ah.Copy !req
464. I have bad news, Mr...Copy !req
465. Shelby.Copy !req
466. We agreed 50,000
on completion of business.Copy !req
467. My wife and I have had a misfortune
on the London Exchange.Copy !req
468. There's 20 there.Copy !req
469. You'll have to wait for the rest.Copy !req
470. Cavalry, eh?Copy !req
471. Mm.Copy !req
472. Huh!Copy !req
473. Yeah.Copy !req
474. I spent a long of time
waiting for the cavalry, me.Copy !req
475. One time, me and my comrades
waited three days.Copy !req
476. When the cavalry finally came,Copy !req
477. an officer,
on the back of a fine white horse,Copy !req
478. joked that he'd been delayed
playing a game of whist.Copy !req
479. So I took out my Webley revolver
and I shot him in the head,Copy !req
480. stole his horse,
reported him for cowardice.Copy !req
481. All for a game of chance.Copy !req
482. After my people completed their task
in Chinatown,Copy !req
483. they collected all the photographs,
letters and chequesCopy !req
484. that will cause you concern.Copy !req
485. I now have them in a safe place.Copy !req
486. On Monday, you will give me
the full £50,000 in cash...Copy !req
487. or I will steal your white horse
from under you.Copy !req
488. How the fuck did a man like you
get into a position of trustCopy !req
489. in a place of power and privilege?Copy !req
490. A man like me?Copy !req
491. A man like me?Copy !req
492. Lord Suckerby.Copy !req
493. I've seen the photographs.Copy !req
494. Monday.Copy !req
495. Shelby!Copy !req
496. Sorry I'm late, Ada.Copy !req
497. We've been having briefings
from the Home Office.Copy !req
498. The police are concerned about the effect
of the crash in industrial areas.Copy !req
499. - Right.
- Everything all right?Copy !req
500. Yeah, fine.Copy !req
501. We lost money in New York,
so I've been up late.Copy !req
502. Your brother been busy?Copy !req
503. Er, he's had two meetings with
Mr Shapurji Saklatvala,Copy !req
504. the former Communist MP
for Battersea.Copy !req
505. He's been approached
by an anarchist group in Walsall -Copy !req
506. he's setting up a meeting -Copy !req
507. and there's talk of a mass walk-out
of bus drivers, Nottingham and Derby,Copy !req
508. organised by two Communist convenors
not formerly known to Special Branch.Copy !req
509. He's also had a telephone conversation
with Jessie Eden,Copy !req
510. who is organising a committee
to resist wage cuts across the city.Copy !req
511. But he'll report more when he sees her.Copy !req
512. It's all in there, though.Copy !req
513. Names and everything.Copy !req
514. I heard he had the Labour benches
roaring approval in the House today.Copy !req
515. Huh. If only he meant it,
he'd be dangerous.Copy !req
516. Didn't know you drank stout, Ada.
Thought it was gin.Copy !req
517. Times are hard.Copy !req
518. Hm.Copy !req
519. Exactly how much did you lose?Copy !req
520. Don't worry about it. Tommy has a plan.Copy !req
521. He thinks that we can turn the collapse
of the stock exchange to our advantage.Copy !req
522. He says, "When others retreat,
you advance."Copy !req
523. He says, "We can wave cash in the faces
of desperate men."Copy !req
524. Tell your brother from me,
he's doing excellent work.Copy !req
525. I'm told two more military contracts
for vehiclesCopy !req
526. and parts for the Army in India
are on their way to him.Copy !req
527. Fuck.Copy !req
528. Come.Copy !req
529. Mr Shelby, this arrived from New York.Copy !req
530. It's from Winston Churchill.Copy !req
531. He says he was in New York
and had dinner with Charlie ChaplinCopy !req
532. and Chaplin mentioned your name.Copy !req
533. So he was in New York
and he doesn't mention the crash.Copy !req
534. No. Even though, in the bar last night,Copy !req
535. Mr Churchill's private secretary
reckoned he lost £75,000 in two hours.Copy !req
536. And you?Copy !req
537. Were you affected, Mr Shelby?Copy !req
538. I'm going to my apartment, Adam.Copy !req
539. You lock up.Copy !req
540. Sorry, Mr Shelby, you...
you have one more appointment.Copy !req
541. You set it yourself.
It's in the diary from last week.Copy !req
542. A journalist from the Times.Copy !req
543. He used to be with
the Birmingham Mail.Copy !req
544. He sent you some questions.Copy !req
545. You said you wanted to meet him.Copy !req
546. He's outside.Copy !req
547. Yes.Copy !req
548. Send him in.Copy !req
549. Mr Shelby?
Mr Levitt from the London Times.Copy !req
550. Have a seat.Copy !req
551. Adam, you go home, I'll lock up.Copy !req
552. Mr Shelby, do you remember me?Copy !req
553. No.Copy !req
554. Once, in Small Heath,
you were burning photographs of the King.Copy !req
555. - London Times. You've done well.
- As have you, sir, to put it mildly.Copy !req
556. I sent you a list of questions.Copy !req
557. Yeah, I misplaced them.Copy !req
558. Yeah, well, you have a lot on your plate.Copy !req
559. Yes.Copy !req
560. All I remember is
that your questions interested me.Copy !req
561. Oh!Copy !req
562. Good.Copy !req
563. Sorry, just...Copy !req
564. Ah, here we are.Copy !req
565. Yes, um...Copy !req
566. Um... So, Mr Shelby,
traditionally in this country,Copy !req
567. print journalists take no interest in the,
er, the private lives of politicians.Copy !req
568. Private lives?Copy !req
569. But in these modern times,
especially in America...Copy !req
570. journalists are beginning to...
Well, that is to say, yes, um...Copy !req
571. Readers are beginning to say...Copy !req
572. want to know more about the men
who represent them.Copy !req
573. Of course.Copy !req
574. In these modern times.Copy !req
575. Whereas before it would have
been seen as ungentlemanly to, er,Copy !req
576. to ask a public figure questions
about personal mattersCopy !req
577. - or business affairs.
- Oh, well. No need to worry.Copy !req
578. I'm no gentleman.Copy !req
579. Hm.Copy !req
580. Er, Mr Shelby,
as I said in my letter,Copy !req
581. ten years ago I was a journalist
on the Birmingham Evening Mail.Copy !req
582. And of course, working in that city,Copy !req
583. it was impossible
not to know your name...Copy !req
584. and your reputation.Copy !req
585. So, when I saw that you had
been elected as a socialist...Copy !req
586. You reflected on the factCopy !req
587. that working people can indeed change
their lives for the better...Copy !req
588. channel their abilities in new
directions, discover better methods,Copy !req
589. aim for happier outcomes,
even win awards for industry.Copy !req
590. You can write this down, Mr Levitt.Copy !req
591. The question I have for you,
Mr Shelby, is this.Copy !req
592. Was your conversion from bookmaker
to socialist politicianCopy !req
593. a gradual thing or...Copy !req
594. a road to Damascus experience?Copy !req
595. Yeah.Copy !req
596. Now I hear that question...Copy !req
597. I remember receiving your lettersCopy !req
598. and I distinctly remember your use
of the word "bookmaker".Copy !req
599. - Were you not a bookmaker, sir?
- Yes.Copy !req
600. I gained a licence
in 1919 for on-track betting.Copy !req
601. But, since 1923,Copy !req
602. I've made my fortune in the manufacture,
sale and export of motor cars.Copy !req
603. And lately gin.Copy !req
604. And lately three new homes
for orphaned children.Copy !req
605. You can write all this down, Mr Levitt.Copy !req
606. I have another question, Mr Shelby.Copy !req
607. In Birmingham,
at the time that I was there,Copy !req
608. there was a Major Campbell.Copy !req
609. He was found dead.Copy !req
610. A member of your family was charged.Copy !req
611. Right, you answer me this.
Answer me this.Copy !req
612. What is your Tory newspaper
more afraid of?Copy !req
613. Is it evolution or revolution?Copy !req
614. And what is it about
working-class men like me,Copy !req
615. standing up in the House of Commons
and speaking from the heart,Copy !req
616. what is it that so troubles you
that you would try to undermine me?Copy !req
617. I am talking about specific events, sir.Copy !req
618. Which I don't recall...Copy !req
619. with which I was never
personally linked,Copy !req
620. and after which
all convictions were quashed.Copy !req
621. Yeah, now...
I recall receiving your letter...Copy !req
622. and I recall that when I did...Copy !req
623. I asked a colleague of mine
to carry out some research.Copy !req
624. Just a moment.Copy !req
625. Here we are.Copy !req
626. Ah, Michael Levitt.Copy !req
627. Correct?Copy !req
628. - Yes.
- Yes.Copy !req
629. Journalist.Copy !req
630. Unmarried.Copy !req
631. An apartment in Maida Vale.Copy !req
632. An apartment opposite
the underground station.Copy !req
633. "Unmarried" is underlined.Copy !req
634. Mr Levitt enjoys walks in the park.Copy !req
635. Sometimes alone.Copy !req
636. Sometimes not alone.Copy !req
637. Sometimes with other men.Copy !req
638. Sometimes with other men.Copy !req
639. I'm old-fashioned... Michael.Copy !req
640. I believe private lives
should remain private.Copy !req
641. Not everything modern is good, now, is it?Copy !req
642. You gonna write this down...Copy !req
643. in your little fucking book?Copy !req
644. Well?Copy !req
645. Not yet.Copy !req
646. I didn't tell him.Copy !req
647. Him knowing or not knowing
has no relevance to what we're drinking.Copy !req
648. It's vintage.Copy !req
649. Fuck it.Copy !req
650. This...Copy !req
651. is for us.Copy !req
652. Let's drink to the baby.Copy !req
653. Polly, do you remember
when I was last pregnant?Copy !req
654. You were going to take me to Cardiff.Copy !req
655. I was going to get rid of it.Copy !req
656. What about this time?Copy !req
657. Imagine.Copy !req
658. The father's scared.Copy !req
659. He runs away.Copy !req
660. You're left.Copy !req
661. Oh, sweetheart.Copy !req
662. The baby's black,
he's a bastard and it's Birmingham.Copy !req
663. But you don't care.Copy !req
664. Because the world has changed.Copy !req
665. And the baby's eyes are golden.Copy !req
666. And you're gonna leave her with
Aunt Polly every day to look after.Copy !req
667. Aunt Polly, who insisted
that you called her Elizabeth.Copy !req
668. How do you know it's a her?Copy !req
669. Cos I'm Polly Gray.Copy !req
670. It's a girl?Copy !req
671. Golden.Copy !req
672. To be born in the year 1930,Copy !req
673. where everything will be changed
for the better.Copy !req
674. She'll be the colour of a Hollywood Oscar.Copy !req
675. What will Tommy say?Copy !req
676. Tommy knows.Copy !req
677. Hmm!Copy !req
678. He's also seen that the world's
big and round and he says, "So what?"Copy !req
679. Tommy is right, you know, Ada.Copy !req
680. We are flying above the rules now.Copy !req
681. We're bold people, aren't we, Polly?Copy !req
682. That's the beauty.Copy !req
683. Hello, Cyril.Copy !req
684. Least you're still talking to me.Copy !req
685. Where is everyone?Copy !req
686. Your wife is upstairs with Ruby.Copy !req
687. You know, Frances, if there were to be
a snap election in this house today...Copy !req
688. wouldn't win it...Copy !req
689. not even if I were running
against the devil himself.Copy !req
690. No.Copy !req
691. - I gathered.
- Mm.Copy !req
692. Where's Charles?Copy !req
693. Charles is in the stable.Copy !req
694. Thank you.Copy !req
695. Did Arthur explain?Copy !req
696. He said it's God's will.Copy !req
697. But you're not God!Copy !req
698. No, I'm not God.Copy !req
699. Not yet.Copy !req
