489. So we're heading to a place called Sloss Furnace, and—

493. So I wanted to go to Sloss Furnace

494. because it's a very well-known

495. historical location in Birmingham, Alabama.

496. It's a working steel and iron mill,

497. and what they do is now they use it as a—

498. as a way to kinda teach kids about metalwork

499. and all that stuff, and art. - Art?

500. Yeah. Artists will make stuff out of steel and metal

501. and things like that, like sculptures.

502. - They're called nutters.

503. - Or welders.

504. And that's it, right there. Look at that.

505. It looks like something out of "Robocop."

506. Let's go get our furnace on.

511. Welcome to Sloss Furnaces national historic landmark.

512. - Thank you. So, like, what is Sloss Furnace?

513. Sloss Furnace is basically the reason

514. that the city of Birmingham is here.

515. Birmingham is a unique location due to the fact

516. that we have all of the ingredients to create iron.

517. It's one of the few places in the world

518. that that actually exists. - Mm-hmm. Ah.

519. - And this facility ran from 1883 to about 1971.

520. - Wow. - And at that point,

521. they were gonna demolish it. - Oh, wow.

522. - And the citizens kinda rose up to save this facility.

523. And that's how the Sloss Metal Arts program was born.

524. You know, it's a nonprofit arts organization

525. and a community foundry, really.

526. - What are they doing there? - That's our furnace.

527. That's one of our cupolas.

528. So this facility had two blast furnaces on-site.

529. This is a baby version of that.

530. Okay. So you throw in the ingredients, heat it up,

531. and out comes... - Molten iron.

532. - Iron. Wow. - Yeah. We're using it for art.

533. - Okay.

534. - Is there lava here? - There's no lava.

535. Lava is a melted rock. - It is?

536. - So this is a melted metal.

537. - I've never seen real lava before.

539. Well, this is pretty close to real lava here.

540. You know what I thought was fascinating,

541. the color of that molten metal. - Oh, it was amazing.

542. - So we have these little sand molds here.

543. We're gonna make one of these little tiles

544. and then we're gonna put it on the line,

545. and they're gonna fill it up with iron.

745. It gives you the chance to experience

746. what it would be like to walk on the moon

747. in 1/6 gravity of what we have here on Earth.

748. So if someone weighs 120 pounds here on Earth

749. would weigh only 20 pounds on the moon.
