37. For me, this week is kind of about helping

38. my dad put his own life into perspective.

39. I've set up a bunch of places that I just know he ll love.

40. And it s all going to culminate and kind

41. of coup de grace by going in to

42. a place called Iron Mountain.

43. The original recordings of Elvis are housed there

44. as well as Bill Gate s historical Corbis photo vault.

45. Sony Music, they have their recordings store there.

46. Ugh, including the original recordings of Crazy Train,

47. and I don t think my dad has heard it since

48. he recorded it back in the early 1980 s.

49. And I think my Dad s going to love it.

50. It s the perfect place to celebrate the

51. Prince of Darkness s birthday.

70. Mmm-hmm, which is an old abandoned prison.

72. Where Al Capone served time.

73. And the place is like wild looking,

74. I mean it s like terrifying.

75. So it s got like- Yeah.

76. I usually like to avoid prison,

77. so that's kind of like my life goal.

78. What was the story with you and

79. when you were in prison?

83. It was like the rebirth of Ozzy.

88. When it was built, this probably wasn t

89. as populated out here.

90. At the time it was built, it was the most

91. technologically advanced building in America.

93. It had running water, it had flushable toilets,

94. it had inside heating.

95. So it actually was more advanced than the

96. White House when they opened it.

97. Which I find kind of strange,

98. that the president still had to like dump in

99. a pot and throw it out the window but

100. a criminal got to use a flushable toilet.

115. greatest parts of this historic prison.

117. The Eastern State Penitentiary operated

118. as an active prison all the way until 1970.

119. 1970? 1970, yes.

120. Even though there was like people

121. living all around and stuff?

122. Exactly, the city actually grew up around the prison.

123. There was a death row here.

124. Um, initially Eastern State was-

125. They did not actually kill people here.

126. Eastern State was an incredibly notorious prison

127. for the people who were held here.

128. So are you guys familiar with Al Capone or Scarface?

129. Oh who, this guy?

130. This was the first place he was ever in prison.

131. Can we go in there?

132. Oh absolutely.

133. So we do not typically do this for people but-

134. Just don t lock us in. I will not lock you in.

135. So then we re going to pop this open,

136. and you guys are welcome to step inside.

138. What s the deal with this furniture?

139. So we have recreated everything in here

140. based on what people wrote about him in the newspaper.

141. So we know that he did purchase a lot of

142. these items from the store inside of the prison.

143. So he did purchase the radio from an

144. inmate that lived in the cell before him.

145. So wait, you could actually furnish

146. your own cells here?

147. It would come with some limited

148. furniture but people who had money,

149. they could purchase other items in the prison store.

150. If you had the opportunity to decorate

151. your cell what would you have done?

152. I d add a door, to get out.

153. I definitely would have built a door to get out.

154. What do you think dad?

155. Lock you up in here for a night or two?

156. No thank you. This is crazy.

157. It would have sucked.

158. So we re going to end through this gate.

159. We re going to check out one of the recreation

160. areas, like this basketball court.

161. There s also a baseball field that s

162. doubled as a football field.

163. So um, I wanted to tell you guys a little

164. bit more about another famous inmate who

165. was held here, who was actually a dog.

166. A dog? A dog.

167. Yeah his name was Pep the dog, he was

168. sentenced here for killing the governor s cat.

169. So he was sentenced

170. for murder and he was given a life sentence-

171. You re joking! I m not- I m not joking!

172. Now is there any record of like him

173. just roaming around or was it more of a

174. novelty like hey we booked him,

175. we checked him in, and then like one of

176. the guards probably kept him?

177. He kind of roamed around the property that

178. he was sent here to really boost the moral.

179. Were they all smoking marijuana back then?

180. Well, hold on a second. Isn t that-

181. how do you defend yourself if you re a dog?

182. I never saw a uniform.

184. You can grab a pair of white gloves

189. of the prison, as well as some of the

190. objects that were used to secure the prison,

191. and then of course, shanks or shivs or kitchen

192. utensils that were given to guys that

193. were locked up here, and then turned into weapons.

194. Wow! This is the death ledger.

195. Where deaths of inmates were recorded.

196. How many recorded deaths are there here?

197. We know of 1,200 people that died.

198. But the one that I wanted to point out

199. to you guys is this one that's written in

200. pencil here, because it actually said that

201. somebody escaped in a coffin.

202. Oh! He faked his death?

203. Yeah!

204. This one um, particularly creepy

205. baby doll that was done by a female inmate

206. who was out here at Eastern State.

207. Were female inmates here as well?

208. There were female inmates here from

209. the 1830 s untill the 1920 s.

210. So these two women actually drugged a man

211. and then they robbed him, and it turned out

212. that he was actually formerly incarcerated

213. here at Eastern State.

214. Woah! And then I know you were

215. interested in seeing some of the inmate

216. made weapons or shanks and shivs,

217. so you guys can feel free to pick any of them up.

218. This one is very special because it was

219. actually found by somebody that currently

220. works here. Wow!

221. She opened a drawer inside one of

222. the cells and this fell out on to the ground.

223. Wow, so that s like a real-

224. From this 1970's probably.

225. Probably from the 1970 s, yes.

306. we had stopped off at the Mutter Museum of

307. Medical Abnormalities. The perfect place for

308. the Prince of Darkness on his birthday.

309. That s creepy you look at your body

310. and you go, that could be

311. a encyclopedia.

312. Now, on July 15th, 1868 a twenty-eight

313. year old Irish woman named Mary Lynch

314. went to Philadelphia General Hospital

315. and she was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

316. The resident doctor, John Stockton Huff

317. dissected he after her death.

318. Then he wrote a little note in this book.

319. That s actually his- That s actually his

320. hand- writing. And he says that he removes

321. skin from her thighs and tanned it in a chamber pot.

322. He held onto the skin for eighteen years.

323. For what reason? Well in 1887, he used

324. the skin to bind these three books.

325. Oh! What was the purpose?

326. We don t know.

327. Everyone at that museum was so used

328. to being around dead things,

329. like nothing phased them.

330. Like handing us like a human flesh bound book.

331. She was like, Oh yeah that's human flesh

332. Yeah but it didn t look like human.

333. You know if it had a nose on it you

334. would have gone, woah!

335. If it was smiling.

336. So I hope you liked meeting Mary.

337. We ve brought some stuff out into this main room

338. to kind of give you a sampling of some of the

339. objects that we have here in our collection.

341. Is that a real head? No this is actually

342. a wax model. And a lot of people ask,

343. Why do we have wax models when we ve

344. got the real things, like this?

345. Well the most important thing about these

346. wax models is the texture.

347. Look at the colors, That's incredibly accurate.

348. These wax models were based on individuals

349. who actually had these pathologies.

350. What is that? That is syphilis!

351. Oh my goodness! This is what syphilis

352. will do to you!

353. Wow, really? Absolutely.

354. Even though it s like sexually transmitted,

355. it does that to your face? Exactly!

356. There s three stages of syphilis.

357. Now the primary stage doesn t look

358. anything like this, in fact it s probably only

359. a little sore and it can be on your face or

360. it can be on your genitals. The secondary stage is

361. nothing sometimes, it s asymptomatic.

362. So you re walking around, you re feeling great,

363. and you re passing it around to all your

364. friends and family.

365. And then you get to the third stage,

366. and that's what this guy is right here.

368. the Prince of Darkness, it wouldn t be a nice

372. In the 19th century,

373. if you were sexually active,

374. a lot of people had syphilis because

375. there was no cure.

461. people of Hershey and they are going to

462. give me and my dad a special tour of their

463. chocolate laboratory. Now, because we re travelling,

464. my dad s away from his best friend in the

465. whole wide world, which is Rocky, his dog.

466. I'm pretty sure he likes that dog more than he

467. likes any of his children. So, I emailed them a

468. photo of Rocky, and they re preparing something

469. very special for him.

470. So it s going to be a pretty awesome surprise and

471. I think he s going to get a kick out of it.

472. So as the days roll on, it s getting sweeter, yet weirder.

473. So we are currently headed to Hershey Land.

474. You know, it s a bit of an amusement park.

475. They actually have labs there where they

476. will make chocolate.

477. I can t have sugar or anything.

479. Now what s the deal with the sugar free diet?

480. My doctor said it s poisoning,

481. I'm trying to keep my weight down.

509. So the Native Americans in the Yucatan Peninsula,

510. and also down in South America had

511. made a beverage with it.

512. And what they really did was take cocoa

513. beans like these, grind it up and you get chocolate.

514. How much cocoa beans do you get through

515. here and out, must be tons and tons.

516. We make about a million pounds a day

517. of Hershey Milk Chocolate.

518. This is the fruit of the cocoa tree,

519. there s usually about forty to sixty beans in a pod,

520. it takes twenty-five beans to make a Hershey Bar.

521. That s a lot of beans. We need five million

522. cocoa pods a day.

523. Where do you get it from? We use Ghanaian beans

524. and ivory coast, also a lot from

525. South America as well.

526. Wow.

527. And Milton Hershey, he built his factory here.

528. He could get cocoa beans here, he could get

529. sugar here, but this place, it s all about-

530. Milk. Milk farms.

531. See these dark pieces? Yeah.

532. That s chocolate. You can take one of these

533. pieces and go ahead and eat it.

535. It tastes like a hint of chocolate there.

536. But it s kind of bitter. Yeah.

580. It s sucking heat out of the chocolate.

581. If you don t temper chocolate properly it-it

582. won t come out or your molds.

583. That s every time I try and make homemade

584. chocolate, it just ends up turning into

585. like a rock hard block. That s exactly it,

586. grab it you throw it back in your pot.

587. I made chocolate. There you go.

588. I m a clever boy.

589. All right, now we are gonna mold some bars.

590. Cool.

591. What we are gonna do is,

592. take a little chocolate, gonna pour a little

593. bit in the mold, now we re gonna take it-

594. Start doing this.

595. This is to get the air bubbles out

596. and you can see the air bubbles starting

597. to come to the surface.

598. It s amazing that you ve been making

599. chocolate like this since the Nineteen Hundreds.

600. Exactly. Yes. So is this the first

601. time you ve molded chocolate bars?

602. Yes this is the first time I've done chocolate.

646. Now the Iron Mountain is a huge underground

647. storage facility that s two-hundred and twenty

648. feet underground and essentially was built

649. to withstand a nuclear war.

651. be there for eternity. My dad s music and

652. photos of my dad are being store at a place where

653. Thomas Edison s patents are, and where ugh ET,

654. the original reel of ET is stored

655. and you know, it s kind of cool.

656. He doesn t really know that I got all

657. this stuff lined up for him, he just thinks we are

658. touring this facility so off we go underground,

659. like Hobbits.
