1. I don't want
to fight nobody!Copy !req
2. In America we all have
certain inalienable rights.Copy !req
3. Like the right
to bear arms,Copy !req
4. And the right
to remain silent.Copy !req
5. But the state has
the ultimate right.Copy !req
6. It can kill us.Copy !req
7. And due to popular demand,
governor James Devlin,Copy !req
8. Revived capital punishment.Copy !req
9. And he decided that
Jefferson Keane,Copy !req
10. A man he
doesn't know,Copy !req
11. A man he will
never even meet,Copy !req
12. Should be
put to death.Copy !req
13. Should be put down
like a rabid dog.Copy !req
14. No!Copy !req
15. The mood in this
country has changed.Copy !req
16. People are sick of crime,
sick of being afraid.Copy !req
17. They need a sign that
something's being done.Copy !req
18. Even, governor,
if it's been provenCopy !req
19. That executions
have no effect
on crime?Copy !req
20. Especially if
has no effect.Copy !req
21. These days, murders
are random, senseless.Copy !req
22. Maybe the punishment
should be, too.Copy !req
23. Jefferson Keane will
be the first personCopy !req
24. Executed by
this state in 34 years.Copy !req
25. He's the first,
because heCopy !req
26. Snapped the neck
of another inmate.Copy !req
27. He's the first because
he deserves to die.Copy !req
28. Jefferson Keane is the first
because he's black and young.Copy !req
29. The public is not
going to feel safeCopy !req
30. If we execute a
70-year-old white guy.Copy !req
31. You're not gonna turn this
into a racial thing with me?Copy !req
32. Oh, please.Copy !req
33. Has anybody thought about
the protestersCopy !req
34. We're gonna
have outside?Copy !req
35. Marching around,
yelling slogans,Copy !req
36. And the
counter-protesters
yelling at them?Copy !req
37. And we'll have
even less
parking spaces.Copy !req
38. The protesters aren't
gonna be a problem.Copy !req
39. I want you to know that
when those protesters come,Copy !req
40. I'm standing
with them.Copy !req
41. I can't have an
employee of mine out thereCopy !req
42. Holding a candle
in front of a camera.Copy !req
43. The last time I looked,
we had freedom of speechCopy !req
44. And freedom of assembly
in this country,Copy !req
45. Or did you guys
eliminate those rights too?Copy !req
46. The governor's
been biting my ass,Copy !req
47. Saying he's gonna
make more budget cuts,Copy !req
48. Up to and
including your job.Copy !req
49. Is this a threat?Copy !req
50. I've got
a job, Leo.Copy !req
51. I've got a
permanent vocation.Copy !req
52. I can go teach fifth-grade
kids at cathedral school.Copy !req
53. I can do be a
missionary in
pago-pago.Copy !req
54. Don't join
the protesters.Copy !req
55. And if I do?Copy !req
56. You're fired.Copy !req
57. Well, that's fine.Copy !req
58. I'll send you a
postcard from pago-pago.Copy !req
59. Hey Markstram, what if Keane
didn't kill Martinez, huh?Copy !req
60. What if they got
the wrong man?Copy !req
61. He did it, Kenny.Copy !req
62. I know he did it, I'm saying
what if he didn't do it?Copy !req
63. I don't
understand.Copy !req
64. Makes you wonder
what the guy's doin'Copy !req
65. What the
guy's thinking,Copy !req
66. Sitting on death row,
knowing he's gonna die.Copy !req
67. The only difference between
you and him,Copy !req
68. Is he knows the
exact date he'll die.Copy !req
69. The state's gonna let
Keane choose which way he
wants to go out.Copy !req
70. Me, I'd
take hanging.Copy !req
71. What about
lethal injection?Copy !req
72. That's for
pussies.Copy !req
73. They say lethal injection
causes no pain.Copy !req
74. How do they know?Copy !req
75. Someone come back
from the deadCopy !req
76. And say they didn't
feel anything?Copy !req
77. Did you hear?Copy !req
78. Sister Peter Marie
got fired!Copy !req
79. Yeah, I know,
I was her assistant.Copy !req
80. She got fired
'cause she's against
the death penalty.Copy !req
81. So am I.Copy !req
82. Me, too.Copy !req
83. Were you around
when the last person
in the state was executed?Copy !req
84. I was the last person
in the state executed.Copy !req
85. So you're saying
your life was savedCopy !req
86. By the
'65 blackout.Copy !req
87. All the electricity
in five states, gone.Copy !req
88. To this day they
don't know whether
the shortage kept me aliveCopy !req
89. Or if I caused
the power to go "pfft".Copy !req
90. And you had
no after effects?Copy !req
91. Sure!Copy !req
92. That's when
I first met God.Copy !req
93. He shook my hand,
smiled and said,Copy !req
94. "Bob, play the oboe."Copy !req
95. The oboe?Copy !req
96. The oboe.Copy !req
97. And do you?Copy !req
98. What?Copy !req
99. Play
the oboe?Copy !req
100. No, I don't have
the lips for it.Copy !req
101. Gonna share?Copy !req
102. Hey, law-boy.Copy !req
103. I thought
Schillinger saidCopy !req
104. You couldn't
get high anymore.Copy !req
105. Yeah...
Fuck him.Copy !req
106. You go over
my appeal?Copy !req
107. Ryan, I told you I was in
litigation not criminal law.Copy !req
108. I got no chance, huh?Copy !req
109. Considering the number
of eyewitnesses?Copy !req
110. No.Copy !req
111. Ah, fuck it.Copy !req
112. At least I'm not
getting the juiceCopy !req
113. Like that
scum-fuck Keane.Copy !req
114. They should've just let
the latinos take him out.Copy !req
115. That's the reason
why they were there.Copy !req
116. What do
you mean?Copy !req
117. The latinos were in
the gym to kill Keane?Copy !req
118. Never mind.Copy !req
119. Are you saying
he was set up?Copy !req
120. Never mind, Beecher.Copy !req
121. If it was self-defense,
he shouldn't be executed.Copy !req
122. Fuck that!Copy !req
123. Don't make trouble
or you'll be next!Copy !req
124. Excuse me.Copy !req
125. I'd like to get
a fax copyCopy !req
126. Of the transcript from
the Jefferson Keane trial.Copy !req
127. Bitcher, get
your ass over here.Copy !req
128. Yes, sir?Copy !req
129. That laundry's not
gonna wash itself.Copy !req
130. Sir... Have you
heard any —Copy !req
131. Anything about Jefferson
Keane being set up?Copy !req
132. Oh, yeah...Copy !req
133. The hacks made
him a "gladiator".Copy !req
134. Even got the whole
thing on videotape.Copy !req
135. Wouldn't you love
to see that?Copy !req
136. Yeah!Copy !req
137. If we could
get that videotape,Copy !req
138. He wouldn't
be executed.Copy !req
139. What are you
talking about?Copy !req
140. Another nigger's
going down.Copy !req
141. I'm glad.Copy !req
142. But...Copy !req
143. "but" what?Copy !req
144. Nothing, sir.Copy !req
145. Don't forget,
a little starch.Copy !req
146. I'll go to McManus,
tell him what might
have happened in the gym,Copy !req
147. Get him to
investigate.Copy !req
148. You can't.Copy !req
149. Why not?Copy !req
150. If you say anything,
they'll kill you.Copy !req
151. They who?Copy !req
152. Exactly.Copy !req
153. Hey, Beecher.Copy !req
154. Sorry I got a little
testy before.Copy !req
155. That's okay.Copy !req
156. You want to
get high?Copy !req
157. No, thanks, man,
not right now.Copy !req
158. Kind of trying to
keep my head clean.Copy !req
159. Later.Copy !req
160. What I should do,
is represent KeaneCopy !req
161. And appeal his
murder conviction.Copy !req
162. You?Copy !req
163. I'm a lawyer.Copy !req
164. The state
disbarred you.Copy !req
165. The state can't take away
what I do, who I am.Copy !req
166. I can help
the man.Copy !req
167. He killed Martinez
in self-defense.Copy !req
168. He shouldn't die.Copy !req
169. You need to
talk to Keane himself,Copy !req
170. Find out what really
went on that day.Copy !req
171. Yeah, I know.Copy !req
172. Getting into
death row isn't easy.Copy !req
173. I have a way.Copy !req
174. I'm in fear
for my life.Copy !req
175. From who?Copy !req
176. I can't say.Copy !req
177. You know
I can't say.Copy !req
178. I need you to put me
in protective custody.Copy !req
179. You can't be
going in and outCopy !req
180. Of protective custody
whenever you want.Copy !req
181. It's to be used
only in extreme cases.Copy !req
182. Well, this is.Copy !req
183. Next time you ask,
I may say no.Copy !req
184. I'll take that risk.Copy !req
185. Keane?Copy !req
186. Keane?Copy !req
187. Keane!Copy !req
188. Who wants me?Copy !req
189. Beecher,
Tobias Beecher.Copy !req
190. I need to talk to you
about your trial.Copy !req
191. I read your transcript.Copy !req
192. You weren't very cooperative
with your attorney.Copy !req
193. I killed Martinez.Copy !req
194. Why didn't you tell them
you were set up?Copy !req
195. Look, Johnny post
killed Dino OrtolaniCopy !req
196. Because I
told him to.Copy !req
197. Now the wiseguys
know that.Copy !req
198. Now they
want me dead.Copy !req
199. If they kill me,Copy !req
200. One of my homeboys
is gonna kill them.Copy !req
201. And then they're gonna kill
another one of my boys.Copy !req
202. And on and on and on.Copy !req
203. My death can
put an end to that.Copy !req
204. Not necessarily.Copy !req
205. Look, if I die, I feel like
I might go to heaven now.Copy !req
206. But if I go back to Em City,
I might go back to my old ways.Copy !req
207. I might lose
my faith, my soul.Copy !req
208. I'm at peace
right now, Beecher.Copy !req
209. Please don't
take that from me.Copy !req
210. Look, I'm not responsible
for your soul,Copy !req
211. But as a lawyer,Copy !req
212. I am responsible
for justice.Copy !req
213. I don't need
your cooperationCopy !req
214. To file an appeal
on your behalf.Copy !req
215. Beecher,
please don't.Copy !req
216. It's something
I have to do.Copy !req
217. We got to get
ahold of that tape.Copy !req
218. It's got the fight
between Keane and
the latinos.Copy !req
219. What are the chances of one
of the hacks giving it up?Copy !req
220. The video would implicate
them in the murder.Copy !req
221. Well, do what
you can, Bob.Copy !req
222. Sure.Copy !req
223. There you are.Copy !req
224. Oh, yeah, hey.Copy !req
225. Why did you go
into "p.C." ?Copy !req
226. I just needed
some time alone.Copy !req
227. What are you
doing here?Copy !req
228. Working on
Ryan O'Reily's appeal.Copy !req
229. Really?Copy !req
230. Thought you said
that was useless.Copy !req
231. Yeah, but he asked me
to take another stab at it,Copy !req
232. So I figured
I would.Copy !req
233. You wouldn't be
bullshiting me, would you?Copy !req
234. You want to
take a break?Copy !req
235. You wouldn't be up to
something else?Copy !req
236. No, sir.Copy !req
237. "Argen vs. The state of Texas."Copy !req
238. This is about
a stay of execution.Copy !req
239. Since when is O'Reily
being executed?Copy !req
240. Eat it.Copy !req
241. What?Copy !req
242. Eat the page.Copy !req
243. No!Copy !req
244. Do not fuck
with me, prag.Copy !req
245. Eat it!Copy !req
246. Another one?Copy !req
247. Rebadow...Copy !req
248. Yes?Copy !req
249. I understand you've been
asking questionsCopy !req
250. About a certain
videotape...Copy !req
251. Well...Copy !req
252. Said videotape
does not exist.Copy !req
253. Oh, really?Copy !req
254. You don't
believe me?Copy !req
255. No, why should I?Copy !req
256. Maybe a couple of days
in "the hole"Copy !req
257. Will help clarify
reality for you.Copy !req
258. Heard you talked to Keane
even though I said don't.Copy !req
259. Yeah.Copy !req
260. That took
some balls.Copy !req
261. You starting to grow
some balls, Beecher?Copy !req
262. I had ballsCopy !req
263. A long,
long time ago.Copy !req
264. I thought I could
get 'em back againCopy !req
265. By saving
Jefferson Keane.Copy !req
266. But the lawyer
in me...Copy !req
267. Got stretched out
on the rackCopy !req
268. And hung by the neck
until dead.Copy !req
269. You got
any dope?Copy !req
270. What you need, pal,
is an upgrade.Copy !req
271. What you need
is some heroin.Copy !req
272. Go ahead...Copy !req
273. You swat a fly,
step on an ant,Copy !req
274. Squash a cockroach,Copy !req
275. You don't think
much of it.Copy !req
276. In fact, killing a bug gives
you a sense of accomplishment.Copy !req
277. Fucking ant was
ruining your picnic!Copy !req
278. Cockroach was crawling
through your kitchen cabinet.Copy !req
279. You put an end
to their disgusting,
miserable little livesCopy !req
280. And make a
better world for everyone.Copy !req
281. Only, for every one
you kill,Copy !req
282. More appear,
bigger, uglier,Copy !req
283. Meaner than before.Copy !req
284. As a man of color,
I'm outraged by that verdict.Copy !req
285. As a muslim, I have to
be concerned withCopy !req
286. Tizi Ouzou's soul.Copy !req
287. Tizi Ouzou?Copy !req
288. Oh, since
the conversion,Copy !req
289. That's the name
Jefferson keane
chose for himself.Copy !req
290. So you wanna
serve as his minister.Copy !req
291. As his iman, yes.Copy !req
292. Do you have
any objection?Copy !req
293. No.Copy !req
294. Okay then,
here's the deal:Copy !req
295. You can go see
Keane in death row
and talk to him,Copy !req
296. But only about
spiritual matters.Copy !req
297. If I get wind of
him or youCopy !req
298. Or any of the brothers
stirring up shit,Copy !req
299. I will give
him a rabbi.Copy !req
300. ( reporter )
as the day of execution
draws near, tension grows.Copy !req
301. Both outside the walls at
the Oswald maximum security
penitentiary, and inside,Copy !req
302. Where the debate on the death
penalty is no less fierce.Copy !req
303. I don't believe
in murder.Copy !req
304. First degree, abortion,
or by jury decree.Copy !req
305. It's all murder!Copy !req
306. Lethal injection?Copy !req
307. What's wrong with the
good old electric chair?Copy !req
308. Jefferson Keane will die
tomorrow in this prison.Copy !req
309. In light of the historic,
moral and political
nature of the event,Copy !req
310. We might lose sight of
the human factors involved.Copy !req
311. We spoke today with
Cornelius Keane,
the inmate's father,Copy !req
312. And Helen Martinez,
mother of the murder victim.Copy !req
313. You teach a boy
right from wrong,Copy !req
314. Then you just
hope for the best.Copy !req
315. ( mrs. Martinez )
I want him dead!Copy !req
316. I want him
in the ground, dead!Copy !req
317. Dead!Copy !req
318. Dead!Copy !req
319. Jefferson Keane's sister's
in kidney failure.Copy !req
320. They think
she'll die.Copy !req
321. Oh, this is
just great.Copy !req
322. Life just keeps
getting better and better.Copy !req
323. I've fucked this up
from the get-ready.Copy !req
324. Ortolani's dead
'cause of meCopy !req
325. And now Keane's
gonna join him.Copy !req
326. You think you're
responsibleCopy !req
327. For that bad boy
being on death row?Copy !req
328. Timmy...Copy !req
329. And I mean this in the
nicest way possible...Copy !req
330. You are one
fucked-up guy.Copy !req
331. Hmm...Copy !req
332. Well...Copy !req
333. Does that mean we're not
going to the play tonight?Copy !req
334. Doctor...Copy !req
335. We need you!Copy !req
336. On three,
one, two, three.Copy !req
337. We should
run some tests.Copy !req
338. No, I'm going
to be fine.Copy !req
339. Hey, some say there are
five stages of death:Copy !req
340. Denial, anger,
bargaining,Copy !req
341. DepressionCopy !req
342. And finally,
acceptance.Copy !req
343. The moment you say
to yourself,Copy !req
344. "I'm gonna die, and ain't
shit I can do about it."Copy !req
345. Oh yeah, in Oz,
we know all about that.Copy !req
346. We know all
about acceptance.Copy !req
347. Look at
your hair.Copy !req
348. Come on, let me
braid it for you.Copy !req
349. Nah, that's
all right.Copy !req
350. C'mon, I'll make
your hair look so nice,Copy !req
351. They won't
want to kill you.Copy !req
352. C'mon...Copy !req
353. You're crazy.Copy !req
354. C'mon.Copy !req
355. I saw pop
on tv yesterday.Copy !req
356. Yeah?Copy !req
357. Talking about you,Copy !req
358. Talking about our family.Copy !req
359. Sorry I ain't who
you want me to be.Copy !req
360. I like
being queer.Copy !req
361. I love you,
Billie.Copy !req
362. Allah loves you.Copy !req
363. But dad
don't.Copy !req
364. Jefferson...Copy !req
365. I'm sorry, Tizi...Copy !req
366. I've got some
bad news.Copy !req
367. Your sister grace...
Is in the hospital.Copy !req
368. Kidney failure.Copy !req
369. The doctors think that
she'll probably die soonCopy !req
370. Unless she gets
a transplant.Copy !req
371. But organs are scarce.Copy !req
372. Why don't you
take one of mine?Copy !req
373. Not like I'm going to
use 'em much longer.Copy !req
374. Make that
happen, McManus.Copy !req
375. I'll try.Copy !req
376. You do more
than try.Copy !req
377. Make it happen.Copy !req
378. Make it happen!Copy !req
379. The governor says no,
he won't grant a stay.Copy !req
380. Fuck.Copy !req
381. Even that prick Devlin
can't be that heartless.Copy !req
382. He says Keane
is too dangerousCopy !req
383. To be released
to a hospital.Copy !req
384. He's changed.Copy !req
385. This conversion of his
could be bullshit.Copy !req
386. I talked to him, Leo.
It's real.Copy !req
387. We've got to fight
for this one.Copy !req
388. How?Copy !req
389. If we go public,
we stoke the protestersCopy !req
390. And piss Devlin off
even more.Copy !req
391. Devlin thinks
he's God.Copy !req
392. Yeah.Copy !req
393. Maybe it's time we got help
from the real one.Copy !req
394. You want me to call the
cardinal to intercede?Copy !req
395. Yes.Copy !req
396. Cardinal Abgott
is more conservative thanCopy !req
397. Jesse helms and bill buckly
all rolled into one.Copy !req
398. He once gave
a speech whereCopy !req
399. He justified the torture
of the holy inquisition.Copy !req
400. That's fucked up,Copy !req
401. Even so, you got to
make the call.Copy !req
402. You make the call.Copy !req
403. What, Ray, are
you afraid?Copy !req
404. No, of course
I'm not afraid.Copy !req
405. Then?Copy !req
406. Why do you think that
I work here, huh, tim?Copy !req
407. I went to the pontifical
gregorian university
in the Vatican.Copy !req
408. I was in the
top of my class.Copy !req
409. I was the cardinal's
"great yellow hope",Copy !req
410. Until I started
working in his officeCopy !req
411. And I just asked
a few too many questions.Copy !req
412. I had a few
too many opinions.Copy !req
413. I defied him...Copy !req
414. Instead of
deifying him.Copy !req
415. So his excellency
decided to punish meCopy !req
416. By sending me to OzCopy !req
417. To extinguish
my career.Copy !req
418. So Jefferson Keane's
sister diesCopy !req
419. Because you and the
cardinal had a tiff?Copy !req
420. I didn't say I
wouldn't make the call.Copy !req
421. I'm just warning you,
it probably won't...Copy !req
422. Do any good.Copy !req
423. Sorry to disturb you.Copy !req
424. You've come about
the transplant.Copy !req
425. Governor James Devlin,
under pressure from
religious leaders,Copy !req
426. Including sheik zahir farrah
and Francis cardinal Abgott,Copy !req
427. Has granted a 30-day
stay of execution
to Jefferson Keane,Copy !req
428. The man convicted of
killing another inmateCopy !req
429. At Oswald maximum
security penitentiary.Copy !req
430. Keane will donate a kidney
to an ailing sister.Copy !req
431. He is expected to go into
surgery some time today.Copy !req
432. The governor was
quick to point outCopy !req
433. All medical costs are covered
by the family's insurance.Copy !req
434. "clemency" that's a
fancy word for mercy.Copy !req
435. You see, the governor can
commute a death sentence.Copy !req
436. He has the power to just
pick up the phone and say no.Copy !req
437. But to me,Copy !req
438. The only time the
governor shows clemencyCopy !req
439. Is when he don't
make that call,Copy !req
440. 'cause life in prison
without paroleCopy !req
441. Is a shitload
worse than death.Copy !req
442. Death is parole.Copy !req
443. Death is the real mercy.Copy !req
444. King me.Copy !req
445. Oh, fuck.Copy !req
446. O'reily...Copy !req
447. Yeah.Copy !req
448. Come here.Copy !req
449. Why?Copy !req
450. Because I say.Copy !req
451. So?Copy !req
452. We got
business.Copy !req
453. Don't move any pieces,
I got 'em memorized.Copy !req
454. Would I do that?Copy !req
455. Hey, Joey,
I'm here.Copy !req
456. You bet detroit
in the game?Copy !req
457. You lost.Copy !req
458. Fucking Thomas.Copy !req
459. You owe.Copy !req
460. So?Copy !req
461. I'm good for it.Copy !req
462. Says you.Copy !req
463. I haven't
paid before?Copy !req
464. I want it now.Copy !req
465. Why you busting
my balls?Copy !req
466. Because I don't
like your face.Copy !req
467. Hey, pal, take a
look in the mirror.Copy !req
468. You wanna die?Copy !req
469. Problem,
guys?Copy !req
470. The joint smells
of too much...Copy !req
471. Garlic.Copy !req
472. D'angelo, count to ten
and walk away.Copy !req
473. Fucking dago jizzbag.Copy !req
474. You lose,
white boy.Copy !req
475. No, I never lose
when it counts.Copy !req
476. I'm telling you,
Jefferson was set up.Copy !req
477. By who?Copy !req
478. You don't have to
be John thompsonCopy !req
479. To figure out
the game plan.Copy !req
480. I know it was the
wiseguys that did it.Copy !req
481. Schibetta sent Jefferson
to the gladiator ring?Copy !req
482. No, not Schibetta.Copy !req
483. I've been
asking around.Copy !req
484. Looks like Joey D'Angelo
was roguing.Copy !req
485. Ever since
Ortolani croakedCopy !req
486. D'angelo's been
wanting to move up,Copy !req
487. But the old man's
been slow,Copy !req
488. So D'Angelo
took it on himselfCopy !req
489. To off Jefferson just to
impress the old man.Copy !req
490. That fuckin'
mook, D'Angelo?Copy !req
491. If D'Angelo got Jefferson
the death penalty,Copy !req
492. We gotta
execute that mother—Copy !req
493. Look, you fellows
do what you gotta do.Copy !req
494. With all the shit that's been
goin' on around here,Copy !req
495. If you whack
D'Angelo,Copy !req
496. Glynn's going to
lock us down for good.Copy !req
497. So what are we
supposed to do?Copy !req
498. You two work in the
kitchen, right?Copy !req
499. D'angelo works
in the kitchen.Copy !req
500. Maybe he has
a little accident.Copy !req
501. Yeah, I like that.Copy !req
502. Why you so hot on justice
for Jefferson now?Copy !req
503. Because Jefferson took care
of Ortolani for me.Copy !req
504. I owe him.Copy !req
505. Good morning.Copy !req
506. I'm Carlton Auebach and...Copy !req
507. Who?Copy !req
508. As you know, sister Peter Marie
is not around,Copy !req
509. So the warden
asked me to pinch hit.Copy !req
510. We want sister Pete.Copy !req
511. She's not here,
so today—Copy !req
512. Shut the fuck up!Copy !req
513. Thank you.Copy !req
514. Today we're going to talk
about anger management.Copy !req
515. Controlling the
savage beast inside you.Copy !req
516. Fuck!Copy !req
517. Mr. Schibetta...Copy !req
518. Can I come in?Copy !req
519. I heard what
happened to Joey.Copy !req
520. Steam pipe bursts,
knocks him backward,Copy !req
521. Hits him in the head.Copy !req
522. Is he okay?Copy !req
523. He's unconscious.Copy !req
524. He'll be laid up
for a while.Copy !req
525. I don't mean
to be reaching,Copy !req
526. But if you ever need
an extra hand,Copy !req
527. I took care of
Jefferson Keane for you.Copy !req
528. He's going to die and both
our hands are clean.Copy !req
529. One of my best buddies
in the armyCopy !req
530. Was Donny O'Reily,Copy !req
531. Irish guy...Copy !req
532. From Howard Beach.Copy !req
533. Tough little fucker didn't
take any bullshit from anybody,Copy !req
534. Including the sergeant.Copy !req
535. He loved women,
he loved boats.Copy !req
536. He loved
women on boats.Copy !req
537. He loved vodka.Copy !req
538. He loved women who
drank vodka on boats.Copy !req
539. Who knows?Copy !req
540. Maybe we can
do some business.Copy !req
541. Okay.Copy !req
542. The poor
son-of-a-bitch.Copy !req
543. Yo, padre.Copy !req
544. How you doing?Copy !req
545. How's my baby.Copy !req
546. He's not doing
so good, Miguel.Copy !req
547. He's not getting
any better.Copy !req
548. Shit!Copy !req
549. The doctors...Copy !req
550. They're thinking of taking
him off the life support.Copy !req
551. What do you mean,
pull the plug?Copy !req
552. No, no, no, no.Copy !req
553. Maritza thinks it's
the best thing, too.Copy !req
554. No, Maritza's sweet.Copy !req
555. She gonna listen to anything
anybody tells her to.Copy !req
556. I don't want them
to kill my baby.Copy !req
557. They're not killing
the baby, Miguel.Copy !req
558. If they turn
the machines off,Copy !req
559. Then the baby can have
a natural death.Copy !req
560. No, I want to
speak to Maritza.Copy !req
561. I want to see
my baby right now.Copy !req
562. You can't see Maritza,
you can't see the baby.Copy !req
563. They're not even going to
let you make a phone call.Copy !req
564. They're going to start a
psychiatric evaluation of you.Copy !req
565. They think
I'm a bug?Copy !req
566. You cut yourself
all up!Copy !req
567. So?Copy !req
568. I did it
for the baby.Copy !req
569. What do you mean
you did it for the baby?Copy !req
570. You tell me I gave
the baby life, right?Copy !req
571. That he's my
responsibility.Copy !req
572. Well, the baby being sick,
I don't know what to do.Copy !req
573. I ain't a
fucking doctor.Copy !req
574. And slashing your
face did what, huh?Copy !req
575. That's between
me and God.Copy !req
576. Oh, Miguel, you tell
the shrink thatCopy !req
577. And you're gonna be in here
till you're 90-years-old.Copy !req
578. You gotta
help me.Copy !req
579. You got to get me
out of here.Copy !req
580. You got to help me
see my baby.Copy !req
581. You got to tell them
not to kill it.Copy !req
582. You got to
let me see
my baby!Copy !req
583. You got to tell them
not to kill it!Copy !req
584. I want to
see my baby!Copy !req
585. I got Alvarez on
the road to redemption.Copy !req
586. I got him
to start caring.Copy !req
587. Now I guess that's
tearing him up inside.Copy !req
588. The doctor at the
neonatal unit says thatCopy !req
589. Keeping the baby alive is
actually cruel at this point.Copy !req
590. I'm just trying to
catch up here, all right?Copy !req
591. I've had one meeting
with Alvarez.Copy !req
592. He sort of just
whined about his kid.Copy !req
593. I want him released so
I can take him to the hospital,Copy !req
594. Because I think that
when he sees the conditionCopy !req
595. That the baby's in,
he will understand whyCopy !req
596. They're going to take
the life support away.Copy !req
597. I need
more time.Copy !req
598. We don't
have time.Copy !req
599. They want to turn the
machines off tomorrow.Copy !req
600. Tomorrow?
Forget it.Copy !req
601. Okay.Copy !req
602. I don't need his
permission, you know.Copy !req
603. You're gonna take this
responsibility on yourself?Copy !req
604. Absolutely.Copy !req
605. I appreciateCopy !req
606. Everything
you've done for me...Copy !req
607. Especially,Copy !req
608. With the baby
and all.Copy !req
609. I guess sometimesCopy !req
610. That's the way
things go.Copy !req
611. Things just
work out like that.Copy !req
612. You're right.Copy !req
613. I mean, I feel
better about myself.Copy !req
614. I never
thought thatCopy !req
615. I'd love a baby
with all my heart.Copy !req
616. I never loved anything
before in my life,Copy !req
617. So it's like,
opened up,Copy !req
618. A whole new me.Copy !req
619. That's important right?Copy !req
620. Figuring out who you are,
you know, and...Copy !req
621. And about yourself.Copy !req
622. So you know,
I know now.Copy !req
623. Well, I'm real glad.Copy !req
624. Well you know
I owe it all to you.Copy !req
625. Well, I gotta go.Copy !req
626. Hey father...Copy !req
627. Where was God
when my son died?Copy !req
628. Same place he was
when his own son died.Copy !req
629. It's looking
pretty good.Copy !req
630. I feel good.Copy !req
631. Well, the remaining
kidney's functioning fine.Copy !req
632. The rest of you
is pretty healthy,Copy !req
633. So this afternoon I'll have you
transferred back to...Copy !req
634. Death row
you can say it, doctor.Copy !req
635. Keane, you have
a visitor.Copy !req
636. Hey, pop.Copy !req
637. How's grace?Copy !req
638. Doctor says
she's recuperatingCopy !req
639. Faster than expected.Copy !req
640. That's some rocking kidney
you gave her.Copy !req
641. So how
you doing?Copy !req
642. I'm still a little turned
around by all this publicity.Copy !req
643. Having a microphone
shoved in my faceCopy !req
644. Every time i
leave the house.Copy !req
645. We've been getting lots of
letters and cards mostly nice.Copy !req
646. One guy from Iowa,
he sent $100 cash.Copy !req
647. Your aunt Tilly said that
I had to send it back.Copy !req
648. Did you?Copy !req
649. No fucking way.Copy !req
650. Dad...Copy !req
651. I need for you to do
something for me.Copy !req
652. Well, anything, son,
come on now, you know that.Copy !req
653. I need for you
to talk to Billie.Copy !req
654. He's turned
into a fag.Copy !req
655. Dad, you don't know
what it's like in here.Copy !req
656. You don't know the things
they do to you.Copy !req
657. The loneliness.Copy !req
658. Talk to him.Copy !req
659. I raised you three
all alone.Copy !req
660. Now your sister...Copy !req
661. She's going to make
something with her life.Copy !req
662. And especially with
what you done for her.Copy !req
663. But when he leaves...Copy !req
664. What's Billie
ever going to be?Copy !req
665. Your son,
my brother, forever.Copy !req
666. Okay, time's up.Copy !req
667. It's rare when you
say good-bye to someoneCopy !req
668. That you know
it's the last time.Copy !req
669. You can try to say
whatever it isCopy !req
670. You should have
said before.Copy !req
671. Or you can just
hold on tight.Copy !req
672. Just hold on hoping the moment
will last you a lifetime.Copy !req
673. Shit!Copy !req
674. You all right?Copy !req
675. Jefferson...Copy !req
676. Was my oldest...Copy !req
677. So he always had
a special place.Copy !req
678. A man...Copy !req
679. Shouldn't live
to see his own son die.Copy !req
680. Hey, I brought you
some tea.Copy !req
681. You brought me
some tea?Copy !req
682. Why?Copy !req
683. Well, it's herbal.Copy !req
684. Maybe you don't
want it.Copy !req
685. Hey, just so happens
I'm out, thanks.Copy !req
686. So...Copy !req
687. So...Copy !req
688. Why are you
here, McManus?Copy !req
689. I mean, what
do you want?Copy !req
690. I don't know.Copy !req
691. I just wanted
to tell you...Copy !req
692. That I'm sorry
you're gonna die.Copy !req
693. And...Copy !req
694. You'd like
my forgiveness?Copy !req
695. Well, whatever you think
you've done, I forgive you.Copy !req
696. Oohhh.Copy !req
697. Did you get
Kareem Said's
test results?Copy !req
698. Oh, that
feels so good.Copy !req
699. So far,
everything's fine.Copy !req
700. I'm just waiting
for the MRI results.Copy !req
701. Good, you want to
go to dinner tonight?Copy !req
702. I can't.Copy !req
703. Why not?Copy !req
704. I'm witnessing
Keane's execution.Copy !req
705. What?Copy !req
706. Yeah, I told you.Copy !req
707. You didn't tell me.Copy !req
708. Yes, I did.Copy !req
709. Gloria, this is not something
I would forget, believe me.Copy !req
710. Christ!Copy !req
711. Look, what is
the big deal?Copy !req
712. I'm only prescribing the
drugs, declaring the death.Copy !req
713. It's not like I'm sticking
the I.V. In his arms.Copy !req
714. Gloria, doctors are
supposed to be healers.Copy !req
715. You're supposed to help
keep people alive.Copy !req
716. You're not supposed
to kill them.Copy !req
717. You really see this
as a killing.Copy !req
718. I don't want
you doing this.Copy !req
719. You what?Copy !req
720. I don't want you
doing this!Copy !req
721. We've only been going out
for a couple of weeks,Copy !req
722. Where do you get off telling me
what I can and can't do?Copy !req
723. No, wait, wait,
wait, wait, wait.Copy !req
724. Don't grab me.Copy !req
725. You better take
some time off, tim.Copy !req
726. You've been around
this prison so muchCopy !req
727. You're starting to
act like them.Copy !req
728. Thanks.Copy !req
729. Is the governor
here yet?Copy !req
730. No, I haven't
seen him.Copy !req
731. But a pro-
death penalty marcherCopy !req
732. Just took a swing
at sister Pete.Copy !req
733. Is she okay?Copy !req
734. Good aim.Copy !req
735. She just kicked him
in the balls.Copy !req
736. I take it you're not going
to watch the execution.Copy !req
737. How about you?Copy !req
738. Uh-uh.Copy !req
739. I can't stand
watching flowers die,Copy !req
740. Let alone
another human being.Copy !req
741. Closest I ever
came, was Bambi.Copy !req
742. "Bambi" ?Copy !req
743. Yeah.Copy !req
744. My ex was
a big hunter.Copy !req
745. He was always going off
with his buddies,Copy !req
746. So I said to
him one time "take me".Copy !req
747. After some complaining
he did.Copy !req
748. So I got out there in
the forest with thisCopy !req
749. Big hunky shotgun
and I fired at a deer.Copy !req
750. Hit it dead-on.Copy !req
751. So I went over to this thing
and I leaned down and...Copy !req
752. And this deer looked up
at me with these eyesCopy !req
753. These eyes
like flashlights.Copy !req
754. I knelt beside it
and I held its headCopy !req
755. And I whispered,
"I'm sorry".Copy !req
756. Then like batteries
going bad,Copy !req
757. The light in his eyesCopy !req
758. Flickered
a little bitCopy !req
759. And went out.Copy !req
760. For the next two years
we were married,Copy !req
761. Every time I walked
into the den,Copy !req
762. I had to stare at that
fucking deer's dead eyes.Copy !req
763. I had to dust them.Copy !req
764. When we got divorced,
that's all I asked for,Copy !req
765. The deer's head...Copy !req
766. And I buried it.Copy !req
767. That's how
I feel tonight.Copy !req
768. What do you mean?Copy !req
769. Like my head's hanging
on somebody's wall.Copy !req
770. You want to
have dinner?Copy !req
771. Sure.Copy !req
772. Hey...Copy !req
773. Yeah?Copy !req
774. How you doing?Copy !req
775. Okay.Copy !req
776. You?Copy !req
777. Not bad for a man
about to die.Copy !req
778. Yeah, you go
tonight, huh?Copy !req
779. Yeah, you?Copy !req
780. Next Thursday,Copy !req
781. But I'm in appeal.Copy !req
782. You ever see
that old movie?Copy !req
783. With that old actress,
Susan Hayward?Copy !req
784. Which movie?Copy !req
785. I don't know.Copy !req
786. It's called
"she's gotta live"
or something like that,Copy !req
787. She's on death row,
waiting to be fried or gasedCopy !req
788. Or whatever they used to
do back in the day.Copy !req
789. Only thing, her attorney has
applied for some reprieve,Copy !req
790. So she just waits and the
clock keeps ticking,Copy !req
791. Waiting for that call
from the governor.Copy !req
792. Yeah...Copy !req
793. And at the last possible
minute, he calls, huh?Copy !req
794. Now that
I think about it,Copy !req
795. I think she fries.Copy !req
796. I need to ask
some questions.Copy !req
797. What do you want done
with your property?Copy !req
798. Give it to my dad.Copy !req
799. And the money
in your trust account?Copy !req
800. To my brother
and sister.Copy !req
801. Will your family
be claiming your body?Copy !req
802. Yeah.Copy !req
803. Who are
your witnesses?Copy !req
804. My dad and
the minister said.Copy !req
805. You sure you
should see this?Copy !req
806. Yeah.Copy !req
807. Tizi and I have come
a long journey together.Copy !req
808. I'm not going to turn
my back on him now.Copy !req
809. Okay...
Let's do it.Copy !req
810. Officer.Copy !req
811. Death is the supreme
moment of truth, my brother.Copy !req
812. So sayeth
The Prophet.Copy !req
813. Praise be
unto him.Copy !req
814. And peace
be unto you.Copy !req
815. Minister, they
took my koufi.Copy !req
816. I don't want to die out
without my koufi.Copy !req
817. Here, you
take mine.Copy !req
818. There are 3000 men and women
sitting on death row right now.Copy !req
819. Congress has denied
state inmates access
to federal courts.Copy !req
820. Congress has also
eliminated financingCopy !req
821. To law offices
for death row appeals.Copy !req
822. The states themselves are
shortening the appeals process.Copy !req
823. Lay down.Copy !req
824. In this country,
there's now one executionCopy !req
825. Every single week.Copy !req
826. There were more
executions this yearCopy !req
827. Than any time
since the '50's.Copy !req
828. And we know how righteous
the 50's were.Copy !req
829. You can make
any statement you'd like.Copy !req
830. I want my family to know,Copy !req
831. That I love them.Copy !req
832. And I believe that
this punishes themCopy !req
833. More than it
punishes me.Copy !req
834. I'm so sorry for the
three murders that I did.Copy !req
835. And I wish,
by killing me today,Copy !req
836. You could
bring them back.Copy !req
837. My time on this earth
has been far too short.Copy !req
838. Maybe too short
to get it all done right.Copy !req
839. So...Copy !req
840. I'm ready
to move on.Copy !req
841. All praise... To Allah.Copy !req
842. All praise.Copy !req
843. Governor?Copy !req
844. Justice has been served.Copy !req
845. L'italien...Copy !req
846. The supreme court refused
to hear your appeal.Copy !req
847. Renquist is fag.Copy !req
848. Be that as it may,Copy !req
849. Your execution is
scheduled for tomorrow.Copy !req
850. Prisoner number 9-7-l-6-4-1
Richard L'Italien,Copy !req
851. Convicted April 3rd, '97
murder in the first degree.Copy !req
852. death.Copy !req
853. Tomorrow?Copy !req
854. Well, my
schedule's clear.Copy !req
855. Okay.Copy !req
856. Hey, warden, there's
something I want to tell you.Copy !req
857. Something I
never told anybody.Copy !req
858. I suffocated
Jennifer Miller.Copy !req
859. Yeah, I know.Copy !req
860. That's why
you're gonna die.Copy !req
861. I also suffocated
Dorothy Payne.Copy !req
862. Who?Copy !req
863. Dorothy Payne.Copy !req
864. She was a waitress up in
Council Bluffs, Iowa.Copy !req
865. You confessing
to another murder?Copy !req
866. Uh-huh.Copy !req
867. I'll notify the
proper authorities.Copy !req
868. Wait.Copy !req
869. I also suffocatedCopy !req
870. Ethel Peterson
and Gertrude Victor...Copy !req
871. And Mary rappCopy !req
872. And Christina TrudellCopy !req
873. And Eleanor Hughes,Copy !req
874. Wilma Lomax,
Lisa masters.Copy !req
875. And Lorraine McCarthyCopy !req
876. And Betty CaseCopy !req
877. And Irene MartinCopy !req
878. And Amelia Nugent,
Elizabeth Phelps,Copy !req
879. And Lucille Upton,Copy !req
880. And Esther Voght.Copy !req
881. That's what I did.Copy !req
882. Richard L'Italien
confessed to 39 murders,Copy !req
883. All young women.Copy !req
884. He suffocated them all.Copy !req
885. If the governor
had his way,Copy !req
886. He would execute
L'Italien, 39 times.Copy !req
887. I have to
get up there.Copy !req
888. Wait.Copy !req
889. Listen...Copy !req
890. How can you go
along with this?Copy !req
891. You're as much against
the death penalty as I am.Copy !req
892. Of course
I am, Pete.Copy !req
893. I don't know.Copy !req
894. Maybe if anyone
deserves to die,Copy !req
895. Richard L'Italien
deserves to die.Copy !req
896. Maybe the world will breathe
a little easier once he's gone.Copy !req
897. My job is not
to make judgments.Copy !req
898. My job is to be
by his side.Copy !req
899. My place...Copy !req
900. Is with him.Copy !req
901. If he needs me.Copy !req
902. Pray for him, Mary.Copy !req
903. That's for him.Copy !req
904. That's for
all of them.Copy !req
905. Have you ever had
bull's balls, father?Copy !req
906. No, sir, I can't
say that I have.Copy !req
907. They serve them every year
at the Bohemian grove.Copy !req
908. What's that,
that's a restaurant?Copy !req
909. Oh, man you never
heard of Bohemian grove?Copy !req
910. It's a retreatCopy !req
911. In San Francisco.Copy !req
912. For investment brokers,
bankers,Copy !req
913. Politicians,
intellectuals.Copy !req
914. I'm amazed you're
not hip to it.Copy !req
915. Of course, I grew up
in the Bay Area,Copy !req
916. So we always knew
when it was happening.Copy !req
917. Even as a kid, I always
wanted to go, you know.Copy !req
918. Wow.Copy !req
919. Wouldn't that
be something?Copy !req
920. Swimming the rushing river
with some secretary of state,Copy !req
921. Pissing on a redwood
next to Donald Trump.Copy !req
922. I mean, these guys
are the elite,Copy !req
923. Men of power.Copy !req
924. Men!Copy !req
925. Women were excluded,Copy !req
926. But the
supreme-fucking-courtCopy !req
927. Forced the Bohemian
to let the "coozes" in.Copy !req
928. Can you believe
that shit?Copy !req
929. Once they were in, I wanted
nothing to do with it.Copy !req
930. I was done.Copy !req
931. But who knows the women
you would have met.Copy !req
932. Not the kind of woman
I'd want to fuck.Copy !req
933. There's a big
difference betweenCopy !req
934. Wanting to fuck a woman
and wanting to kill her.Copy !req
935. Is there?Copy !req
936. Have you ever
been laid, father?Copy !req
937. No.Copy !req
938. Then what would
you know about pussy?Copy !req
939. And what would
you know about...Copy !req
940. Anything?Copy !req
941. All I know is that
once upon a time,Copy !req
942. You wanted to walk in the woods
with important peopleCopy !req
943. And now instead,Copy !req
944. You're here.Copy !req
945. I'm here becauseCopy !req
946. I love women.Copy !req
947. I love every
woman I see.Copy !req
948. Tall ones,
thin ones, fatties...Copy !req
949. It's true.Copy !req
950. You know, I once worked
a circus one summer.Copy !req
951. And I fucked the dwarf
while the fat lady watched us.Copy !req
952. Mm-hmm.Copy !req
953. I fucked trailer park trash
in West Virginia,Copy !req
954. I fucked rich girls
up the ass, in Aspen,Copy !req
955. I fucked PHDs, retards...Copy !req
956. You know, once I fucked an
amputee with both legs missing.Copy !req
957. Fucking them isn't
the same as loving them.Copy !req
958. You sound just like a shrink
I had once in juvie.Copy !req
959. She tried
to tell meCopy !req
960. That I hated women.Copy !req
961. I showed her.Copy !req
962. You fucked her.Copy !req
963. And her daughter.Copy !req
964. And then I
snuffed 'em both.Copy !req
965. If you love
women so much,Copy !req
966. Why do you
kill them?Copy !req
967. Because... !Copy !req
968. When you love someone,
they own you,Copy !req
969. They possess you!Copy !req
970. I will not
be possessed.Copy !req
971. I'm here to give you
absolution for your sins.Copy !req
972. Do you wish
to be absolved?Copy !req
973. Fuck, yes!Copy !req
974. Shit!Copy !req
975. They told me I could order
anything I wantedCopy !req
976. As my last meal.Copy !req
977. I should have
ordered bull's balls!Copy !req
978. I'm really not
ready for this.Copy !req
979. Oh, man.Copy !req
980. First the inmate's
given sodium pentathol,Copy !req
981. The same anesthetic used in
hospitals for major surgery.Copy !req
982. Then a massive dose of
pancuronium bromide.Copy !req
983. That paralyzes the diaphragm.Copy !req
984. Then potassuim chloride
to stop the heart.Copy !req
985. Don't try this
at home, kids.Copy !req
986. It's finished.Copy !req
987. Hello.Copy !req
988. Hello.Copy !req
989. Christ was
executed, you know...Copy !req
990. And if he
hadn't been,Copy !req
991. The world would be
a very different place.Copy !req
992. A better place?Copy !req
993. I didn't
say that.Copy !req
994. I want my
job back.Copy !req
995. Okay.Copy !req
996. I don't have
to beg?Copy !req
997. If it'll make you
feel better, beg.Copy !req
998. I just want you to know
I still disagree with you
on the death penalty.Copy !req
999. Even for a cyst
like L'Italien?Copy !req
1000. Oh, Leo,
"thou shalt not kill."Copy !req
1001. The bible makes
that pretty clear.Copy !req
1002. You cannot take a
human life for any reason.Copy !req
1003. But the bible also says,
"an eye for an eye,"Copy !req
1004. Which says to meCopy !req
1005. That if you kill,
you die.Copy !req
1006. Seems to me God's talking out
both sides of his mouth.Copy !req
1007. Maybe he's as confused about the
death penalty as the rest of us.Copy !req
1008. All I know
for sure is...Copy !req
1009. No one's going to claim
L'Italien's body,Copy !req
1010. So we're going to
stick him in a cheap pine box,Copy !req
1011. Stamp an id number
on the lidCopy !req
1012. And throw him in a hole
at potter's field.Copy !req
1013. There he'll be...Copy !req
1014. With no one
to grieve for him.Copy !req
1015. I grieve for him.Copy !req
1016. Yeah I know.Copy !req
1017. That's why
I love you.Copy !req
1018. That's why I'm
glad you're back.Copy !req
1019. There was this brother on
death row somewheres.Copy !req
1020. He checked in
when he was 16.Copy !req
1021. He sat there
another 16 yearsCopy !req
1022. While the courts and lawyers
argued about this and that.Copy !req
1023. While he waited, he painted
a mural on his wall.Copy !req
1024. Not letting a soul
see what he was up to.Copy !req
1025. Finally when he was 32 and
had spent more life on death rowCopy !req
1026. Than in his momma's house,
all his appeals were exhausted.Copy !req
1027. He was about to die.Copy !req
1028. As he was about to be led out
for the final time,Copy !req
1029. He finally unveiled
his masterpiece.Copy !req
1030. All there was
were six words.Copy !req
1031. "death is certain
life is not"Copy !req
1032. The next day,
the hacks painted over it.Copy !req
1033. Peace out.Copy !req
