1. I have... not two different brains.
I have, like, computers in my head,
Copy !req
2. and sometimes they work against me.
Copy !req
3. I have one computer
talking to you right now,
Copy !req
4. and there's another one going on with me
thinking something completely different.
Copy !req
5. And then there's a third one sometimes.
Copy !req
6. If I wanted to tap into it, I could.
Copy !req
7. And so, it's difficult for me sometimes
to pay attention to things.
Copy !req
8. It's bothered me through the years
because all I wanted to be was normal.
Copy !req
9. I wanted to fit in.
Copy !req
10. But... I deal with it
Copy !req
11. because... that's who you are.
Just deal with it, Vince.
Copy !req
12. It doesn't matter whether you want
to be this way, want to be that way.
Copy !req
13. Here's where you are.
You're different. Be different.
Copy !req
14. And you know the expression,
"Fuck the world." So...
Copy !req
15. That's where I am now.
Copy !req
16. What's the other brain thinking about now?
Copy !req
17. Um... something having a lot of fun, uh...
Copy !req
18. and it's involving sex.
Copy !req
19. WrestleMania.
Copy !req
20. Every year...
Copy !req
21. Shut up!
Copy !req
22. Coming out of the Attitude Era
and into the 2000s,
Copy !req
23. Vince McMahon was still a hugely important
on-screen character for the company.
Copy !req
24. But without Austin, they were always
in search of something for him to do.
Copy !req
25. And now it is time
Copy !req
26. for the Battle of the Billionaires,
Hair vs Hair match!
Copy !req
27. Here comes the money man!
Copy !req
28. Look at that man right there,
Donald Trump.
Copy !req
29. So many celebrities
come into our business and have a blast.
Copy !req
30. And Donald was one of them.
Copy !req
31. Donald had always been a fan.
Copy !req
32. So, I went to Donald, and I said,
Copy !req
33. "I have this idea."
Copy !req
34. "What if we each have a wrestler
that represents us at WrestleMania?"
Copy !req
35. And if Donald Trump loses,
then I shave his head.
Copy !req
36. Of course, if I lose, same thing.
Copy !req
37. The Donald Trump-Vince McMahon
Battle of the Billionaires Feud,
Copy !req
38. it was the biggest pay-per-view audience
Copy !req
39. in the history
of pro wrestling pay-per-view.
Copy !req
40. It was a giant, giant attraction.
Copy !req
41. Hey, look at this!
Donald Trump!
Copy !req
42. Trump! Donald Trump
taking down Vince McMahon!
Copy !req
43. Oh my God!
Copy !req
44. I was entertained by Trump
when he was on the show.
Copy !req
45. Come on up here.
Copy !req
46. His ability to speak
to wrestling fans was excellent.
Copy !req
47. To me, they look like
a very smart group of people.
Copy !req
48. He was kind of perfect for the role.
Copy !req
49. Donald Trump! Donald Trump!
Copy !req
50. Get out of here.
Copy !req
51. In truth, Donald Trump's
sensibility and public persona
Copy !req
52. is much closer to that of a wrestler
Copy !req
53. than to a statesman.
Copy !req
54. Throw him the hell out of here.
Copy !req
55. I'd like to punch him in the face,
I'll tell you.
Copy !req
56. Our fingerprints
are on so many things in the world.
Copy !req
57. Politics, absolutely, my God.
Copy !req
58. Why wouldn't you want to be like WWE?
Copy !req
59. I can do whatever the hell I want.
Copy !req
60. I have the right to do
whatever I want as president.
Copy !req
61. This is what we do.
Copy !req
62. We present larger-than-life characters
Copy !req
63. making outlandish statements
that make people go,
Copy !req
64. "Oh my God, I can't believe he said that."
Copy !req
65. Donald Trump is an example
Copy !req
66. of what seems to be
a kind of pro-wrestlingification
Copy !req
67. of American politics and American society.
Copy !req
68. If you're gonna look
at the influence of Vince McMahon
Copy !req
69. and pro wrestling on culture,
Copy !req
70. man, we elected a president that—
that was playing a pro wrestler on TV.
Copy !req
71. I don't know if it's Trump being Trump
or he learned from wrestling,
Copy !req
72. but I see similarities
between Trump and Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
73. - Oh no!
- Oh my God.
Copy !req
74. Oh my God!
Copy !req
75. Mr. McMahon,
he is the best WWE personality ever.
Copy !req
76. But after the Attitude Era,
Copy !req
77. like, Mr. McMahon was...
Copy !req
78. a more selectively-used character.
Copy !req
79. During the Ruthless Aggression Era,
Copy !req
80. we were always trying to pitch Vince
to have a midlife crisis
Copy !req
81. and become crazy or something like that.
Copy !req
82. But Vince wanted to go another way,
which is, "What if someone kills me?"
Copy !req
83. And we're like, "Okay."
Copy !req
84. So he cut a very cryptic, weird,
un-Mr. McMahon-like promo in the ring.
Copy !req
85. - Thank you.
- Something's not right.
Copy !req
86. Then made
this long walk backstage,
Copy !req
87. passing all the talent,
Copy !req
88. and then got into his limo... paused.
Copy !req
89. Vince is big on pauses
for dramatic effect.
Copy !req
90. And then the limo explodes.
Copy !req
91. The edit was perfect.
Copy !req
92. And many individuals called,
you know, the office, "Is Vince okay?"
Copy !req
93. Vince wanted
to treat it like real life.
Copy !req
94. The website was reporting it was real,
Copy !req
95. and the announcers were somber.
Copy !req
96. And in fact, from what I've heard,
Copy !req
97. Donald Trump called up Vince's office
to make sure Vince was okay.
Copy !req
98. So, that became
a very controversial storyline.
Copy !req
99. But certain tragic circumstances
in real life happened
Copy !req
100. that forced us to stop that storyline.
Copy !req
101. Good evening.
Copy !req
102. Tonight's storyline was to have been the...
Copy !req
103. alleged demise of my character,
Mr. McMahon.
Copy !req
104. However... in reality,
Copy !req
105. WWE superstar Chris Benoit,
his wife, Nancy, and their son, Daniel
Copy !req
106. are dead.
Copy !req
107. Chris Benoit was thought of
an excellent in-ring performer.
Copy !req
108. He's done
everything in this business.
Copy !req
109. He's been a world champion.
He's one of the greatest of all time.
Copy !req
110. And as far as we knew, a great guy.
Copy !req
111. When a wrestler passes away,
Copy !req
112. Raw the next night would become
like a tribute to that individual.
Copy !req
113. So, we did one for Chris that night.
Copy !req
114. Tonight... will be a tribute
to Chris Benoit.
Copy !req
115. And then
while that show was airing,
Copy !req
116. we started to get the details
Copy !req
117. of what had actually happened
and what Chris had done.
Copy !req
118. There is new information
in the death of pro wrestler Chris Benoit.
Copy !req
119. Authorities in Georgia
say it was no accident.
Copy !req
120. Chris Benoit strangled his wife
and smothered their seven-year-old son,
Copy !req
121. and then hanged himself in their home.
Copy !req
122. When the instance
with Chris Benoit happened,
Copy !req
123. the murder-suicide,
Copy !req
124. that rocked the very foundation
of the WWE.
Copy !req
125. The Benoit tragedy
put McMahon and his WWE
Copy !req
126. back under the microscope.
Copy !req
127. Allegations of steroid and drug abuse.
Copy !req
128. Speculation began
that roid rage might have been
Copy !req
129. behind what happened that fateful weekend.
Copy !req
130. They were just pinning
this whole thing on steroids.
Copy !req
131. All I know is steroids generally
don't make you kill your whole family
Copy !req
132. and do all that kind of stuff.
Copy !req
133. There is no correlation
between taking steroids
Copy !req
134. and what happened to Chris Benoit.
Copy !req
135. Human beings are flawed.
Copy !req
136. Chris went nuts.
Copy !req
137. It happens in every form of life
in everything.
Copy !req
138. So, that's the only thing
I can take away from it.
Copy !req
139. - You got it?
- Hold on.
Copy !req
140. - And got it.
- Okay.
Copy !req
141. I was first
a fan of Chris Benoit.
Copy !req
142. Then I got to meet him
when I started wrestling.
Copy !req
143. I debuted in 2002.
Copy !req
144. Making his way
to the ring, Christopher Nowinski!
Copy !req
145. The Harvard graduate.
This guy's great, JR.
Copy !req
146. But about a year later,
I got a concussion that ended my career.
Copy !req
147. Everyone back in 2003, 2004
thought concussions were bullshit,
Copy !req
148. and that I was just weak.
Copy !req
149. And so, this idea started that,
Copy !req
150. "You know, I'm gonna dig in more
to this concussion research
Copy !req
151. and try to take a stab at changing
the world's culture on concussions."
Copy !req
152. When I heard about Chris Benoit,
I was just certain,
Copy !req
153. based on the way he wrestled,
Copy !req
154. that he probably had CTE.
Copy !req
155. CTE is "chronic traumatic encephalopathy."
Copy !req
156. It's a degenerative brain disease
caused by repetitive hits to the head.
Copy !req
157. We see problems with emotion, behavior,
disinhibition, aggression, and depression,
Copy !req
158. and symptoms get worse over time
as your brain is essentially rotting away.
Copy !req
159. But in 2007, no one had ever heard of CTE.
Copy !req
160. I saw Vince McMahon go on The Today Show
Copy !req
161. and give his explanation
for what he thought happened.
Copy !req
162. There was no way of telling
this man was a monster.
Copy !req
163. He framed it as, "We didn't know
what kind of monster Chris was."
Copy !req
164. And I thought that it was
the disease that was the monster.
Copy !req
165. It wasn't Chris.
Copy !req
166. So, I ended up calling Chris's father,
Copy !req
167. and he, through tears,
agreed to let us study his brain.
Copy !req
168. A doctor who studied tissue
from Benoit's brain
Copy !req
169. says the wrestler suffered extensive
brain damage from his years in the ring.
Copy !req
170. They went on to say
Benoit's brain was the worst they'd seen.
Copy !req
171. We contacted
World Wrestling Entertainment.
Copy !req
172. They sent along a statement
saying the analysis
Copy !req
173. that concussions might have led
to Benoit's murderous rampage
Copy !req
174. was speculative, and went on to say,
Copy !req
175. "We respect the desire of that father
Copy !req
176. to do whatever he can
to find some explanation."
Copy !req
177. This doctor came up
with this ridiculous statement of,
Copy !req
178. "Okay, here's why Chris Benoit did this."
Copy !req
179. "Caused some sort of trauma to his head."
Copy !req
180. Things were shown where Chris
would dive off the rope
Copy !req
181. and hit someone with his head.
Copy !req
182. Benoit using
his own head like a weapon!
Copy !req
183. That's complete work.
Copy !req
184. When somebody
grabs your wrist real lightly,
Copy !req
185. and they twist it, I go, "Aah! It hurts!"
Copy !req
186. "Oh my God, you're killing me!"
That's a work.
Copy !req
187. It looks like
there's damage, and there's not.
Copy !req
188. We know what we're doing.
We don't hurt each other.
Copy !req
189. His head bounced off that mat
like a basketball!
Copy !req
190. I worked for a long time.
Copy !req
191. I got dropped on my head one time.
I got concussed.
Copy !req
192. Other than that, I can't remember
Copy !req
193. having too many concussions
in the business of pro wrestling.
Copy !req
194. And my take on that has always been,
Copy !req
195. if you were just wrestling
and you got a bunch of concussions,
Copy !req
196. you're probably doing something wrong.
Copy !req
197. I'm not a CTE guy.
Copy !req
198. Just don't believe in it.
Copy !req
199. Yeah. I mean, I've seen the slides
on Chris Benoit's brain.
Copy !req
200. Like, he had CTE.
Like, there's no question about that.
Copy !req
201. CTE is a disease you can see very clearly
under a microscope,
Copy !req
202. but everybody has fought us on this.
Copy !req
203. The NFL has fought us on this.
Copy !req
204. The NHL is still fighting us on this.
Copy !req
205. FIFA's fighting us.
Everybody's trying to fight us.
Copy !req
206. So, I was actually surprised
when I got a call from Vince McMahon
Copy !req
207. saying he wanted to help.
Copy !req
208. Chris was knocking WWE.
Copy !req
209. I think there was something
worth investigating.
Copy !req
210. I called him, "What are you doing?"
Copy !req
211. I said, "Look, we'll help you out if you
can come up with research that's honest,
Copy !req
212. 'cause we'd like to know
more about it ourselves."
Copy !req
213. And that was the beginning
Copy !req
214. of a wholesale change
in their approach to this.
Copy !req
215. They invited me in
to come start teaching the wrestlers
Copy !req
216. about what I knew
about concussions and CTE.
Copy !req
217. There were a couple of in-ring moves
that we stopped doing.
Copy !req
218. Onto Mr. McMahon!
Copy !req
219. We stopped hitting each other
over the head with metal chairs.
Copy !req
220. I have to admit, initially I was pissed.
Copy !req
221. How are you gonna
take away the chair shot?
Copy !req
222. It's a staple of our industry.
Copy !req
223. Heads up, heads up!
From behind!
Copy !req
224. I'm an old school guy.
We use chairs to help tell our story.
Copy !req
225. Vince made a call.
Copy !req
226. Now there's no more
chair shots to the head.
Copy !req
227. I get it.
Copy !req
228. The company
is a publicly traded company now.
Copy !req
229. Chef Boyardee presents...
Copy !req
230. When you're trying
to market yourself to larger advertisers,
Copy !req
231. the safety and well-being of your athletes
and your performers is a priority.
Copy !req
232. So, it was, again,
what was best for business.
Copy !req
233. Do you think
the motivation is a care for wrestlers,
Copy !req
234. or is it good for business,
or somewhere in between?
Copy !req
235. You know, it's— I don't know which.
Copy !req
236. I couldn't tell you
what the biggest motivation is,
Copy !req
237. but it's an acknowledgement
that it's better for wrestlers
Copy !req
238. and it's good for business. Right?
Copy !req
239. And that's what's most important,
is that all the interests align,
Copy !req
240. and they're doing the right thing.
Copy !req
241. What happened in the aftermath
of the Chris Benoit situation,
Copy !req
242. is that there was really
a lot of negative publicity.
Copy !req
243. It's not real, but the pain is.
Copy !req
244. Professional wrestlers
have suffered broken necks
Copy !req
245. and spilled gallons of blood in the ring.
Copy !req
246. Many turn to performance-enhancing drugs
and painkillers
Copy !req
247. as they spend 200-plus days on the road.
Copy !req
248. And many don't make it
past their 40th birthdays.
Copy !req
249. Wrestlers were dying young,
Copy !req
250. and it was very often
a combination of drugs and steroids.
Copy !req
251. When wrestlers were dying,
it didn't hurt the popularity of wrestling
Copy !req
252. because the fans saw them
as deaths of television characters.
Copy !req
253. They didn't see it as, like,
a husband who's 38 years old
Copy !req
254. with three kids and a wife, and is dead.
Copy !req
255. The fans knew these guys were dying,
but they didn't care, or didn't seem to.
Copy !req
256. "Give us the next guy."
Copy !req
257. At first, McMahon was defiant,
like he's always going to be.
Copy !req
258. "All deaths have nothing to do with us.
It's their choice."
Copy !req
259. Do you have a reason why these people
would be dying under the age of 45?
Copy !req
260. Are you indicating it's my responsibility
these people are dead? Because...
Copy !req
261. I'm asking you if it, in any way,
shape, or form, falls on your shoulders?
Copy !req
262. I was set to have this interview
with the award-winning Armen Keteyian,
Copy !req
263. and when someone comes at me,
Copy !req
264. whether it's a member of the media
or otherwise,
Copy !req
265. I can't help but be defensive.
Copy !req
266. And then be offensive.
Copy !req
267. I'd accept no responsibility
whatsoever for their untimely deaths.
Copy !req
268. None whatsoever.
Copy !req
269. As far as— And you've got
that look on your face like,
Copy !req
270. - "Jeez, Vince, how can you say that?"
- Yeah—
Copy !req
271. Well, but none whatsoever?
I mean, they wrestled for you.
Copy !req
272. They were part of your organization.
Copy !req
273. They worked
a couple of hundred nights a year for you.
Copy !req
274. - Oh my God. No—
- They lived this lifestyle.
Copy !req
275. Oh my God, you can't believe—
Copy !req
276. Can you see that look?
"How can you possibly say that, Vince?"
Copy !req
277. When you look back at just about all
of those performers who passed away,
Copy !req
278. you know, they used these
prescription drugs as recreation.
Copy !req
279. Many just took these pills
because it made them feel good, you know?
Copy !req
280. And when you mix that with steroids
or something else that's an upper,
Copy !req
281. your heart doesn't know which way to go.
Copy !req
282. And it's a horrible cocktail.
Copy !req
283. And that's what happened.
Copy !req
284. "Found dead in their hotel room."
That was the typical scenario.
Copy !req
285. Why isn't these things page one?
Copy !req
286. Millions of kids worship these guys,
and they're dropping dead.
Copy !req
287. Where's the news?
Copy !req
288. And again, McMahon seemed to escape that.
Copy !req
289. They did get bad publicity off of it,
but not that much,
Copy !req
290. because people will just go,
Copy !req
291. "We don't want to waste our time
investigating this fake thing."
Copy !req
292. But as far as WWE goes,
was this kind of a turning point?
Copy !req
293. In hindsight, I would say yes.
Copy !req
294. That did lead to
a lot of major changes in wrestling.
Copy !req
295. You know,
more vigilant monitoring of concussions,
Copy !req
296. more vigilant monitoring of drug abuse.
Copy !req
297. They agreed to pay for rehab
to anyone under contract,
Copy !req
298. even after they're gone with the company.
Copy !req
299. The schedule was reduced.
Copy !req
300. Instead of going ten days on
and three days off,
Copy !req
301. it was four days on and three days off.
It's even better now.
Copy !req
302. The changes have been gigantic.
Copy !req
303. WrestleMania 30.
Copy !req
304. Up until that point,
I'd never lost at WrestleMania.
Copy !req
305. I think I was 21-0.
Copy !req
306. It's all over, brother.
Copy !req
307. - Take him—
- Stop!
Copy !req
308. The streak is a huge part
of the attraction of WrestleMania.
Copy !req
309. The amazing
undefeated streak continues!
Copy !req
310. So, I was gonna win.
The streak was gonna stay intact.
Copy !req
311. But that day,
Vince walks in my dressing room,
Copy !req
312. and he said, "Mark, I think
we're gonna put Brock over tonight."
Copy !req
313. Brock Lesnar!
Copy !req
314. It was a last-minute decision.
Copy !req
315. Mark wasn't prepared for it.
Copy !req
316. I think he was in some sort of
psychological shock.
Copy !req
317. About five, ten minutes
into that match, I get concussed.
Copy !req
318. The match went on 25 minutes or so,
Copy !req
319. but I can't, to this day,
recall being in that match.
Copy !req
320. Looking back on it,
I don't see where Mark was concussed.
Copy !req
321. Could've happened.
Copy !req
322. But I think Mark
just didn't remember any of that
Copy !req
323. because it was so traumatic for him.
Copy !req
324. One, two, three.
Copy !req
325. They took me to the hospital,
and Vince left WrestleMania
Copy !req
326. to go to the hospital.
Copy !req
327. He was there with my wife,
um, consoling... consoling her.
Copy !req
328. You cannot hurt The Undertaker!
Copy !req
329. I never thought
about getting hurt.
Copy !req
330. Even after I got hurt,
I didn't think about getting hurt.
Copy !req
331. Only thing you think about is getting well
Copy !req
332. so you can get back to work.
Copy !req
333. I've had 18 different surgeries.
Copy !req
334. I walk with a limp.
Copy !req
335. I wake up some mornings
and can't get out of bed,
Copy !req
336. but there's nothing that I would change.
Copy !req
337. I love it. And if I could still do it,
I'd still be doing it.
Copy !req
338. We as, you know, the wrestlers...
Copy !req
339. sometimes think we're indestructible.
Copy !req
340. That's just the way it is.
It's just part of who we are.
Copy !req
341. But, on the other hand,
Copy !req
342. this next generation of wrestlers,
I do not want to see them
Copy !req
343. in the same situation as
a bunch of the guys that came before them.
Copy !req
344. And from Charlotte,
North Carolina, Cody Rhodes!
Copy !req
345. I come into WWE in 2007.
Copy !req
346. They were spinning out of
Chris Benoit's terrible tragedy,
Copy !req
347. and out of that, the wellness policy
really becomes a huge part of the company.
Copy !req
348. First, we're instituting
a new drug policy.
Copy !req
349. Behind the scenes,
I came into a very clean WWE.
Copy !req
350. And it was also very clean on-air
Copy !req
351. in terms of,
"We're heading towards a TV-PG era."
Copy !req
352. What motivated Vince
to switch the rating from TV-14 to TV-PG
Copy !req
353. was the 50,000-foot perspective
of advertisers.
Copy !req
354. Go, go!
Copy !req
355. The lewd and kind of
really out-there angles
Copy !req
356. that were going on
in the Ruthless Aggression Era...
Copy !req
357. weren't gonna cut it with sponsors.
Copy !req
358. Okay, here are the stats and things...
Copy !req
359. Vince is a businessman.
He's chairman of the board.
Copy !req
360. He wants to make the company
as much money as possible.
Copy !req
361. Vince was trying to reach bigger,
get more families, more kids.
Copy !req
362. We made that turn,
and it has paid off,
Copy !req
363. literally and figuratively, in dividends.
Copy !req
364. The stock shot up eventually,
Copy !req
365. and sponsorship deals
became much more lucrative.
Copy !req
366. But a lot of your Attitude Era,
Ruthless Aggression audiences
Copy !req
367. would be like, "This is The Muppet Show."
Copy !req
368. It literally was The Muppet Show.
We had The Muppets guest host one time.
Copy !req
369. All those things that led WWE to be
your special, secret, guilty pleasure
Copy !req
370. now was being taken away,
Copy !req
371. and that left a bad taste
in people's mouths.
Copy !req
372. I do what's right
for every one of you
Copy !req
373. from a business perspective.
Copy !req
374. I'm long-term oriented,
Copy !req
375. and you don't even understand
what I'm doing.
Copy !req
376. But in time, you will.
Copy !req
377. When the decision was made to go
PG, some fans complained on social media.
Copy !req
378. But times change, you know?
And views change, and you adapt with it.
Copy !req
379. So they toned down.
Copy !req
380. This is a Divas tag-team match...
Copy !req
381. The timing
of the Women's Evolution
Copy !req
382. coincided with the PG Era shift.
Copy !req
383. The portrayal of women in the industry
Copy !req
384. was progressing and maturing.
Copy !req
385. It is the perfect combination
of beauty and power.
Copy !req
386. And the capabilities of the women
that were coming into the industry
Copy !req
387. were certainly far more athletic
than those that preceded them.
Copy !req
388. The Women's Evolution
was really a movement started by our fans.
Copy !req
389. Fans took to social media
with the hashtag #GiveDivasAChance,
Copy !req
390. upset over unequal screen time
for female wrestlers.
Copy !req
391. Vince was set in his ways by this point,
so it was very hard for him to change.
Copy !req
392. I think Vince was not sure,
Copy !req
393. but ultimately Vince is about
giving the fans what they want.
Copy !req
394. When the fans wanted us
to do more action in the ring
Copy !req
395. and liked what they were getting from us,
he went with it.
Copy !req
396. Someone that got behind us was Stephanie.
Copy !req
397. Stephanie saw us
doing our thing out there.
Copy !req
398. She pushed for the women
to take it to another level.
Copy !req
399. Stephanie had been
a TV character for a long time,
Copy !req
400. but behind the scenes, she became
kind of a public face of the company,
Copy !req
401. Chief Brand Officer.
Copy !req
402. That was her role.
Copy !req
403. And Paul Levesque, Triple H,
Copy !req
404. was getting more and more influence
on the creative side,
Copy !req
405. helping Vince, you know,
kind of like number two.
Copy !req
406. Where was Shane at that point?
Copy !req
407. Um, Shane was kind of out,
you know, for the most part.
Copy !req
408. So, 2016, I was gone
six or seven years at that point.
Copy !req
409. You know, off camera, off everything.
Copy !req
410. I feel good.
Copy !req
411. And got a call.
Copy !req
412. It's my dad,
um, and he says, "Hey, I have an idea."
Copy !req
413. And it's like, "Okay."
Copy !req
414. There was a storyline where my dad
was going to give a very big accolade
Copy !req
415. from my grandfather to my sister,
Copy !req
416. who was completely undeserving,
storyline-wise.
Copy !req
417. No one in the world
deserves this award as much as you.
Copy !req
418. And then all of a sudden, my music hits.
Copy !req
419. The place goes crazy.
Copy !req
420. And still to this day,
Copy !req
421. I'm getting goosebumps under my jacket
right now thinking about it.
Copy !req
422. It was so rewarding to have
an adulation that long and that loud...
Copy !req
423. when you return to...
Copy !req
424. something you love.
Copy !req
425. Holy shit!
Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit!
Copy !req
426. I see my dad looking at me, and he
has pride. I could see it in those eyes.
Copy !req
427. I'm getting choked up looking at that.
Copy !req
428. My sister, she's starting to tear up
because, again, we're all back together.
Copy !req
429. It was a huge moment.
Copy !req
430. This is awesome!
Copy !req
431. And eventually what came out
was something really cool.
Copy !req
432. You and your husband, Triple H,
Copy !req
433. have been really running this company
into the ground.
Copy !req
434. I want control of Monday Night Raw.
Copy !req
435. And then that led
to my dad making a match.
Copy !req
436. One match, one night,
an opponent of my choosing.
Copy !req
437. I'll tell you where and when and who.
Copy !req
438. So, what about it, Shane-O? Huh?
Everybody's happy to see Shane-O-Mac!
Copy !req
439. You got your match. You're on.
Copy !req
440. Good, because I have one last opportunity...
Copy !req
441. to have a fucking beating, okay?
Copy !req
442. A beating about your face.
Copy !req
443. And the place and the time
is gonna be... WrestleMania.
Copy !req
444. And your opponent... The Undertaker.
Copy !req
445. Welcome back, Shane-O.
Copy !req
446. Oh my goodness.
Copy !req
447. And getting to that moment now
of WrestleMania 32...
Copy !req
448. I haven't been in the ring
in seven years,
Copy !req
449. and you can imagine walking out
in not just a small room,
Copy !req
450. but a stadium with a sea of people.
Copy !req
451. It's euphoric.
Copy !req
452. But the greatest thing was
about ten minutes prior to me going out,
Copy !req
453. my boys were backstage.
I was like, "Want to come out with me?"
Copy !req
454. Do me the honor.
I want you to come out with me tonight.
Copy !req
455. They're like, "What? Are you serious?"
Copy !req
456. Look who's out here
with Shane-O-Mac!
Copy !req
457. My boys were doing my stuff,
and they're doing the arm twist.
Copy !req
458. I go, "Look at these little dudes."
Copy !req
459. And then I have to snap out of this
Copy !req
460. 'cause I'm about to throw down
with one of the best of them ever.
Copy !req
461. The Undertaker's bong hits...
and the place goes bonkers.
Copy !req
462. Mm.
Copy !req
463. The rest is history.
Copy !req
464. Shane-O with the flying elbow!
Copy !req
465. Shane!
Copy !req
466. - Shane-O-Mac, here he goes!
- Against the post!
Copy !req
467. I can only imagine
being the son of Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
468. It seemed like Shane was always
trying to prove something to his dad,
Copy !req
469. all the time.
Copy !req
470. Even if it meant doing some
of the most death-defying, you know,
Copy !req
471. feats, uh, we've seen in this business.
Copy !req
472. Shane McMahon
has got Kurt Angle in a bad, bad way here.
Copy !req
473. When you're performing,
Copy !req
474. you want that adulation
that you did a good job.
Copy !req
475. Especially, you know, from my father.
Copy !req
476. And I think that's why I've always
tried to do a bit extra in the ring.
Copy !req
477. - Looks bad for Kurt Angle!
- God!
Copy !req
478. One time, I had a match with Kurt Angle.
It was more of a hardcore match.
Copy !req
479. Kurt was famous, you know,
being an Olympian, for suplexes.
Copy !req
480. He picked me up and suplexed me.
Copy !req
481. I was supposed to go through the glass.
I hit it, "Bam."
Copy !req
482. And I went straight down on my noggin.
Copy !req
483. And I think Shane's head
just bounced right off the concrete floor.
Copy !req
484. I was like,
"All right, you Olympic wuss."
Copy !req
485. "I can't believe you can't throw me
through that. You suck."
Copy !req
486. All of a sudden, he just went, "Whoosh!"
Copy !req
487. - Not again. Oh my God.
- And it took three going out.
Copy !req
488. Suplex one, hit the glass,
didn't do anything.
Copy !req
489. Second one, same thing.
Copy !req
490. And finally,
Kurt threw me through the third one.
Copy !req
491. My God!
Copy !req
492. I felt for Shane that night.
Copy !req
493. He took it like a champ.
Copy !req
494. Trying to prove something to his dad.
Copy !req
495. Shane wanted to be different.
Wanted to earn his stripes in every way.
Copy !req
496. He'd take chances that no one else would.
Copy !req
497. It's not worth it!
Copy !req
498. He did some crazy things
that no one else would do.
Copy !req
499. He knew that
that was something that was his.
Copy !req
500. Oh my God!
Copy !req
501. I'd do some risky things.
Copy !req
502. But, you know, if it's in your blood,
in my view, it's an acceptable risk.
Copy !req
503. - Shane, what are you doing?
- Shane-O-Mac! God!
Copy !req
504. And I've done it happily
to entertain and to push myself as well.
Copy !req
505. And, of course, always looking
for that pat on the back... from my dad.
Copy !req
506. Shane is climbing
to the top of Hell in a Cell!
Copy !req
507. - Shane is scaling!
- Shane, stop!
Copy !req
508. - What does your legacy mean?
- How much does it mean?
Copy !req
509. Not this, please!
Copy !req
510. - Shane, don't do this!
- Don't go!
Copy !req
511. - Shane! No!
- No! Oh my God! Jump— No!
Copy !req
512. No, no!
Copy !req
513. I know he's always wanted me
to respect him, and things of that nature.
Copy !req
514. I don't know there are many pats
on the shoulder in terms of "way to go."
Copy !req
515. Maybe there should've been.
Copy !req
516. My dad... he never said it to me,
and that's okay.
Copy !req
517. But I've always been proud of Shane
for what he's done,
Copy !req
518. what he attempts to do,
Copy !req
519. because he gives it his all.
Copy !req
520. Two. Three.
Copy !req
521. The Undertaker wins.
Copy !req
522. I was very proud
for Shane in that match.
Copy !req
523. I can't help
but feel sorry for Shane.
Copy !req
524. An attempt to regain his legacy.
Copy !req
525. He's been disowned by his father.
Copy !req
526. You remember
seeing your dad after?
Copy !req
527. I got a hug that night.
Copy !req
528. Yeah. Got a hug that night. Uh...
Copy !req
529. It was a very emotional, uh...
very emotional return.
Copy !req
530. Shane got emotional and said,
Copy !req
531. "That's all I ever wanted,
was your respect."
Copy !req
532. So, that was a very personal moment.
Copy !req
533. I got a pat
on the back and a hug. Yeah.
Copy !req
534. Got that one.
Copy !req
535. - Is that hard to come by?
- Very.
Copy !req
536. Had to earn that one.
Copy !req
537. I guess I did.
Copy !req
538. You hear people say this a lot
in our business about Vince.
Copy !req
539. Like, "He was almost like a father to me."
Copy !req
540. We have a family.
Copy !req
541. Not the McMahon family.
We have a much broader family.
Copy !req
542. And in terms of a family-type thing,
I'm the patriarch.
Copy !req
543. He's had the role in my life
of a father figure.
Copy !req
544. Our relationship,
he was a father figure to me.
Copy !req
545. I have a fatherly,
a father-son relationship, with Vince.
Copy !req
546. I mean, I'd honestly
take a bullet for that man.
Copy !req
547. There's no doubt that Vince
is the father figure of the company.
Copy !req
548. And all the stars in WWE
are desperate for Vince's approval,
Copy !req
549. including his own kids.
Copy !req
550. If you look at Shane,
Copy !req
551. when he came back, he was only
really being used as in-ring talent.
Copy !req
552. But it seemed like he was trying to work
his way back into Vince's good graces,
Copy !req
553. into a potential role
as a successor in WWE.
Copy !req
554. At some point,
did I envision myself
Copy !req
555. being next in line to do certain things?
Copy !req
556. Sure, from the standpoint of I just
want to continue the family business.
Copy !req
557. I came back to ensure the future.
Copy !req
558. Not only for my kids,
but for your daughters,
Copy !req
559. and eventually their kids
and their kids' kids, et cetera.
Copy !req
560. That's why I returned to the WWE.
Copy !req
561. He wanted to be
the next McMahon,
Copy !req
562. and he always figured he would be.
Copy !req
563. And then it didn't happen.
Copy !req
564. Most people will say it was because
Stephanie was better at it than he was.
Copy !req
565. One thing that Shane
does have over me is likability.
Copy !req
566. But business is not run by popularity,
and I'm just glad that...
Copy !req
567. Stephanie? She's just like her dad.
Copy !req
568. She's very strong.
Copy !req
569. That's the boss.
Copy !req
570. Shane is nice.
Copy !req
571. And in the wrestling world,
if you're a boss and you're nice,
Copy !req
572. once the people see that niceness,
Copy !req
573. they will try to take advantage of you.
Copy !req
574. With Stephanie,
Copy !req
575. you know you can't take advantage
of that woman.
Copy !req
576. Right off the bat.
Copy !req
577. You don't know what it means
to be a success, Shane.
Copy !req
578. How would you?
You're nothing more than a quitter.
Copy !req
579. Mm.
Copy !req
580. Now, get the hell out of my ring!
Copy !req
581. Through the 2010s
and leading up to the 2020s,
Copy !req
582. Vince McMahon,
Stephanie McMahon, and Triple H
Copy !req
583. were the three most powerful people
inside WWE,
Copy !req
584. and there were a lot of huge successes
during this period of time.
Copy !req
585. There was the WWE Network...
Copy !req
586. 24/7 streaming service, live content.
Copy !req
587. which was
revolutionary in its way.
Copy !req
588. They were on the cutting edge
of a lot of social media stuff.
Copy !req
589. The TV rights deals were going up and up,
Copy !req
590. which culminated
in the giant deal with Peacock.
Copy !req
591. Linda McMahon joins
Donald Trump's cabinet,
Copy !req
592. heading the Small Business Administration.
Copy !req
593. There was a competition started up.
Copy !req
594. In 2019, AEW Wrestling launched.
Copy !req
595. One of the big stars and vice presidents
was Cody Rhodes,
Copy !req
596. who three years later came back to WWE.
Copy !req
597. Thank you so much.
Thank you for coming to get me.
Copy !req
598. - Thank you very much.
- ... Hall of Fame class of 2022!
Copy !req
599. And the stock price
just kept going up and up.
Copy !req
600. It certainly doesn't have
the energy or the vitality
Copy !req
601. that it seemed to in the '80s,
Copy !req
602. and especially not
during the Attitude Era.
Copy !req
603. But Vince, he keeps creating new stars
Copy !req
604. who become huge faces of the company.
Copy !req
605. This man, Roman Reigns,
has become a mainstream star.
Copy !req
606. Roman Reigns, everybody!
Copy !req
607. Because of the success
during this period of time,
Copy !req
608. it was hard to imagine
Vince ever stepping down.
Copy !req
609. But if he were ever going to leave,
Copy !req
610. it seemed clear at the time
that it was Stephanie McMahon and Triple H
Copy !req
611. who were in position to succeed him
in running the company.
Copy !req
612. As far as succession,
Copy !req
613. you don't rule out
Shane or Stephanie, obviously.
Copy !req
614. But it was my understanding that Hunter
was supposed to be the individual.
Copy !req
615. I don't know. That's the upper-level stuff
that I couldn't even imagine.
Copy !req
616. There are a lot of plans
in terms of succession,
Copy !req
617. but it depends on where I am
in terms of the ability to contribute.
Copy !req
618. Welcome to night two
of WrestleMania. 70,000-plus once again.
Copy !req
619. So, when are you gonna...
Copy !req
620. Do you ever
see yourself taking a step back?
Copy !req
621. - Taking a step back?
- Or retiring?
Copy !req
622. Do I ever see myself retiring?
Copy !req
623. No, I don't see myself ever retiring.
Copy !req
624. I never understood
why people stop growing.
Copy !req
625. When you stop growing, you die.
Copy !req
626. Mr. McMahon!
Copy !req
627. Some people are like,
"I want to retire one day."
Copy !req
628. What are you gonna do when you retire?
Copy !req
629. Hold on!
Copy !req
630. I have, like,
no sympathy for people like that.
Copy !req
631. Oh shit.
Copy !req
632. So... go die.
Copy !req
633. Ridiculous.
Copy !req
634. Mr. McMahon has entered the ring!
Copy !req
635. Do you think he'll ever retire?
Copy !req
636. No. No.
Copy !req
637. Vince will never retire.
Copy !req
638. We heard the bell ring.
Copy !req
639. And McMahon with a clothesline!
Copy !req
640. Do I think
Vince will ever stop? No.
Copy !req
641. I don't think he'll ever stop.
He loves it. It's not work to him.
Copy !req
642. I can't believe McMahon
and Austin are toasting at WrestleMania.
Copy !req
643. They finally—
Spoke too soon!
Copy !req
644. Mr. McMahon trying to get away...
Copy !req
645. but Austin stuns McMahon!
Copy !req
646. I cannot imagine a life
Copy !req
647. with Vince McMahon
not being the main dude in the WWE
Copy !req
648. as long as he has breath in his lungs.
Copy !req
649. What do I think it would take
for Vince to retire? Uh...
Copy !req
650. A nuclear bomb exploding.
Copy !req
651. The wrestling world
rocked by the headline hitting today.
Copy !req
652. The WWE founder and CEO, Vince McMahon,
Copy !req
653. is stepping down as chairman and CEO.
Copy !req
654. The Wall Street Journal
reporting McMahon paid a former employee,
Copy !req
655. who he allegedly had an affair with,
$3 million to keep her quiet.
Copy !req
656. It started with a tip.
Copy !req
657. And the tip was that the board of WWE
had received an anonymous email
Copy !req
658. alleging that Vince McMahon
had basically kept quiet, um,
Copy !req
659. an affair with an employee of the company,
and then covered it up.
Copy !req
660. The Journal reports,
according to an email
Copy !req
661. sent to WWE board members,
Copy !req
662. "McMahon initially hired the woman
at a salary of $100,000,
Copy !req
663. but increased it to $200,000
Copy !req
664. after beginning
a sexual relationship with her."
Copy !req
665. The person who wrote the email
portrayed it as a relationship
Copy !req
666. where McMahon
was taking advantage of someone,
Copy !req
667. and was conducting a consensual affair,
Copy !req
668. but the power was clearly
with the guy who was the CEO.
Copy !req
669. How consensual is it when... it's your boss?
Copy !req
670. There's always that boss power,
especially when it's Vince.
Copy !req
671. The separation agreement
prevents the former employee
Copy !req
672. from discussing her relationship
with Mr. McMahon
Copy !req
673. or disparaging him in any way.
Copy !req
674. Beyond the NDAs themselves,
Copy !req
675. we encountered
this kind of culture of secrecy.
Copy !req
676. Vince McMahon exerts such power,
Copy !req
677. he has such influence
over people's careers,
Copy !req
678. that people are very reluctant to speak
because they were afraid of retaliation.
Copy !req
679. My expectation was Vince was going
to just go after those reporters.
Copy !req
680. Because if he had any kind of defense,
Copy !req
681. he'd have gone after
the reporters' credibility,
Copy !req
682. and he never touched them.
Copy !req
683. That shocked me.
Copy !req
684. That is not Vince.
Copy !req
685. McMahon says, in part,
"I have pledged my complete cooperation
Copy !req
686. to the investigation
by the Special Committee,
Copy !req
687. and I will do everything possible
to support the investigation."
Copy !req
688. He is staying in front of the cameras.
Copy !req
689. He's expected to be on SmackDown
later on tonight. Jake?
Copy !req
690. Of course he is.
Copy !req
691. Vince resigned as CEO,
Copy !req
692. but continued on the board of directors
and continued to run Creative.
Copy !req
693. When the first story came out,
they announced,
Copy !req
694. "Vince will be on the air."
Copy !req
695. Welcome to SmackDown!
Copy !req
696. It was just basically
his "F you" at the story,
Copy !req
697. and they did
one of their biggest ratings of the year.
Copy !req
698. Everybody cheered like crazy.
Copy !req
699. When we published
the first article,
Copy !req
700. one of the reactions from some quarters
was, "Well, what did you expect?"
Copy !req
701. Vince's public persona,
the Mr. McMahon character,
Copy !req
702. was intentionally outrageous,
and tied up in all of that
Copy !req
703. was this notion that he was just
rapacious and sexually deviant
Copy !req
704. and couldn't control himself.
Copy !req
705. That was a huge part
of the public character.
Copy !req
706. What complicates that
is that this was this intentional blurring
Copy !req
707. of fictional and non-fictional.
Copy !req
708. You're hired, Stacy!
Copy !req
709. What we have shown is that
some of what was played for laughs
Copy !req
710. as part of the character
Copy !req
711. was not that funny and was,
in fact, very, very serious.
Copy !req
712. As we got into the reporting,
Copy !req
713. we found there had been other allegations
that surfaced over the years
Copy !req
714. against McMahon.
Copy !req
715. In 2006, there was a woman
who worked at a tanning salon,
Copy !req
716. and she alleged that Vince McMahon
had shown her naked photos of himself
Copy !req
717. and had groped her.
Copy !req
718. McMahon denies the allegations,
Copy !req
719. and prosecutors decided
not to move forward with anything
Copy !req
720. 'cause they didn't think
there was enough independent evidence.
Copy !req
721. What are you doing?
Copy !req
722. When the tanning salon thing came,
Copy !req
723. weeks later, Vince created a storyline
Copy !req
724. where somebody's just absolutely
making up all of these things.
Copy !req
725. - Help me!
- Mickie, what are you doing?
Copy !req
726. - Help me now!
- What are you doing?
Copy !req
727. Stop touching me!
Copy !req
728. The reporting built on itself.
Copy !req
729. After that first story,
Copy !req
730. the more sort of we reported,
the more started coming in.
Copy !req
731. Three weeks ago,
Vince McMahon stepped down as WWE CEO
Copy !req
732. following allegations
of sexual misconduct.
Copy !req
733. It turns out now
there's a lot more to the story.
Copy !req
734. McMahon reportedly agreeing
to pay $12 million to four different women
Copy !req
735. over a 16-year period,
according to The Wall Street Journal.
Copy !req
736. The deals were made to suppress
allegations of sexual misconduct.
Copy !req
737. Some of those allegations
were frankly more serious.
Copy !req
738. The most serious one is, we learned
of a settlement for $7.5 million
Copy !req
739. that McMahon struck with a former wrestler
Copy !req
740. who alleged that he had coerced her
into oral sex,
Copy !req
741. that she had refused his further advances,
and he had not renewed her contract.
Copy !req
742. Vince was always the guy
who you figured would survive everything,
Copy !req
743. and then, um,
it was like a week or two later,
Copy !req
744. all of a sudden, it's Friday,
and, and... Vince has retired.
Copy !req
745. They made the announcement
on a Friday because, to the end,
Copy !req
746. they thought that it would build ratings
for Friday night,
Copy !req
747. so they do it Friday afternoon.
Copy !req
748. Stephanie McMahon opens the show.
Copy !req
749. Earlier tonight,
Copy !req
750. my father, Vince McMahon,
Copy !req
751. retired from WWE.
Copy !req
752. So, she finishes
her short speech of,
Copy !req
753. "He devoted his life, did this and that,"
and then, "Let's go, thank you, Vince,"
Copy !req
754. and she's cheering everyone,
"Thank you, Vince."
Copy !req
755. Thank you, Vince!
Thank you, Vince!
Copy !req
756. It was exactly what I expected,
Copy !req
757. but kind of a shock and weird and surreal
Copy !req
758. only because, for 40 years,
Vince had been running that company,
Copy !req
759. and all of a sudden,
in one day, it's all changed.
Copy !req
760. The reaction in the locker room
was uncertainty, for sure,
Copy !req
761. but real chaos
Copy !req
762. in a sense that,
what does WWE look like without Vince?
Copy !req
763. What I originally thought would happen
if Vince was gone,
Copy !req
764. I thought Stephanie
would be the face of the company,
Copy !req
765. and I thought Paul Levesque
would be running the creative end.
Copy !req
766. And that's essentially what happened.
Copy !req
767. Do you think
the business can survive without him?
Copy !req
768. Go, Vince!
Copy !req
769. Honestly?
Copy !req
770. - Thank you.
- You bet. Thank you.
Copy !req
771. Without Vince, I don't think it will.
Copy !req
772. Now that he's retired,
Copy !req
773. I think there was great pleasure
in seeing him get what's coming to him.
Copy !req
774. But five minutes later, do we care?
I don't know how much.
Copy !req
775. Hi!
Copy !req
776. I think we'd be more interested
to see him come back.
Copy !req
777. I think we'd be
much more entertained by that.
Copy !req
778. Because nobody does evil
like Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
779. He still generates heat.
Copy !req
780. And heat is what sells tickets.
Copy !req
781. Do you see Vince coming back?
Copy !req
782. Um, because it's wrestling
and everything, um...
Copy !req
783. I...
Copy !req
784. I would say yes.
Copy !req
785. Big changes at the Stamford-based
World Wrestling Entertainment.
Copy !req
786. The majority owner, Vince McMahon,
has returned to WWE as executive chairman.
Copy !req
787. Meantime, Vince McMahon's daughter,
Stephanie McMahon,
Copy !req
788. has resigned as co-CEO of WWE.
Copy !req
789. Many on Wall Street
expect McMahon to try to sell
Copy !req
790. the $6 billion company at some point.
Copy !req
791. What was your reaction
when Vince returned?
Copy !req
792. Wow, that, um... Well, I mean,
it was so— It was weird.
Copy !req
793. When Vince came back, I wasn't surprised.
Copy !req
794. I was surprised
that people were surprised.
Copy !req
795. I had definitely heard
for a couple of weeks
Copy !req
796. that Vince was getting itchy
and wanted to come back,
Copy !req
797. and I didn't know if he would be able to.
Copy !req
798. Because I had already known
about the board voting unanimously
Copy !req
799. for him not to be back.
Copy !req
800. But he did have the controlling votes.
Copy !req
801. So, he returned.
He changed members of the board.
Copy !req
802. And then days later, Stephanie resigns.
Copy !req
803. Stephanie McMahon
making a statement via Twitter.
Copy !req
804. "WWE is in such a strong position
Copy !req
805. that I have decided to return to my leave
Copy !req
806. and take it one step further
with my official resignation."
Copy !req
807. Vince said that he thought
he never should have quit.
Copy !req
808. But he was talked into quitting.
Copy !req
809. And he said that
it was by somebody close to him.
Copy !req
810. So, you know,
you can draw a conclusion from that.
Copy !req
811. Vince sort of forced his way back in.
Copy !req
812. And it seems to me
Copy !req
813. that Stephanie didn't want
anything to do with the company
Copy !req
814. if Vince was involved.
Copy !req
815. I don't think she was forced out.
Copy !req
816. You know he's put you in a position,
constantly in life, to battle him.
Copy !req
817. You know that, right?
Copy !req
818. Sure feels that way.
Copy !req
819. Oh no— Steph. Come on.
Copy !req
820. - There you go.
- Thank you.
Copy !req
821. I have absolutely no idea what happened
with Stephanie leaving the company.
Copy !req
822. And Dave Meltzer or Shoemaker,
Copy !req
823. or whoever else wants to make up
their lies and their assumptions,
Copy !req
824. they don't know.
Copy !req
825. When Vince came back,
Copy !req
826. the first thing they talked about
was a potential sale.
Copy !req
827. This was like, "Okay, we're taking bids."
Copy !req
828. It is now official.
Copy !req
829. Endeavor announcing
WWE and UFC will combine
Copy !req
830. to form a $21 billion global
live sports and entertainment company.
Copy !req
831. The combined WWE and UFC
will be called the TKO Group.
Copy !req
832. Selling the company
to a strategic company like Endeavor,
Copy !req
833. I thought was genius.
Copy !req
834. Think about it.
It's a new challenge for Vince.
Copy !req
835. He's not just overseeing one company.
He's overseeing another company.
Copy !req
836. I think the idea
probably was to sell it in a way
Copy !req
837. where Vince would still have
the major say-so.
Copy !req
838. Vince is gonna be the executive chairman,
but it's gonna be a bit different for him
Copy !req
839. because WWE shareholders
only get 49% of this company
Copy !req
840. versus Endeavor shareholders, who get 51%.
Copy !req
841. So, he no longer has the absolute control
that he did over WWE.
Copy !req
842. This company's been in your family
for 70 years.
Copy !req
843. Is it a tough day?
Copy !req
844. No, it's a great day.
Copy !req
845. You know, things have to evolve,
be it family, business,
Copy !req
846. it all has to evolve
for all the right reasons.
Copy !req
847. And this is the right business decision.
Thus far, it's the right family decision.
Copy !req
848. There wasn't gonna be, you know,
the next generation Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
849. It got too big to be a family business.
Copy !req
850. It had to be something to where
experts in the big business field
Copy !req
851. were gonna be making
a lot of the decisions.
Copy !req
852. It's not about the last name.
It's not about a family legacy.
Copy !req
853. It's about who is best qualified.
Copy !req
854. We live by the law of the jungle.
Copy !req
855. And the lion who still rules this kingdom
Copy !req
856. wouldn't have it any other way.
Copy !req
857. The company's doing
really strong right now.
Copy !req
858. The attendance
is the best it's been since 2002.
Copy !req
859. More people watch the big events
than have ever watched them before.
Copy !req
860. Sponsorship is way beyond
anything they've ever had before.
Copy !req
861. Profits are the biggest they've ever been,
revenues are the biggest they've been.
Copy !req
862. People will support
an entertainment product
Copy !req
863. and not care about the moral fiber
of the guy running the product.
Copy !req
864. They want entertainment.
Copy !req
865. This week,
World Wrestling Entertainment
Copy !req
866. agreeing to a $5 billion 10-year deal
Copy !req
867. to take its signature
weekly wrestling show, Raw, to Netflix.
Copy !req
868. You saw
some episodes... of this show?
Copy !req
869. Yeah.
Copy !req
870. - Thoughts?
- Thought they sucked.
Copy !req
871. I didn't think it was balanced at all.
Copy !req
872. I thought it was a gotcha piece.
Copy !req
873. I thought it was portrayed
as a gotcha piece.
Copy !req
874. And it was all about,
"How can we make Vince look bad?"
Copy !req
875. "Let's make him look shitty here,
let's make him look shitty there."
Copy !req
876. I'm close to it.
Copy !req
877. You know, I live it,
and it's personal to me.
Copy !req
878. Why I ask is, is there
something about Vince that we're missing?
Copy !req
879. Yeah, the human side.
Copy !req
880. Look, Vince is a businessman.
Copy !req
881. But also, the other side of Vince is,
Copy !req
882. when my wife got cancer,
Copy !req
883. that Vince made sure
that she had the best care in the world.
Copy !req
884. My wife was given
a four-year life expectancy.
Copy !req
885. Best-case scenario.
Copy !req
886. That was 24 years ago.
Copy !req
887. And that was because
Vince McMahon made sure
Copy !req
888. that she got the best care
that was available.
Copy !req
889. It wasn't a documentary on Vince
and Vince's life and Vince's story.
Copy !req
890. It was,
"See what an asshole Vince McMahon is."
Copy !req
891. "Let's see how big of an asshole
we can make him."
Copy !req
892. And if he were one, I would support that.
Copy !req
893. But he's not.
Copy !req
894. The founder and former CEO
of World Wrestling Entertainment
Copy !req
895. is facing new accusations
of sexual assault and trafficking tonight.
Copy !req
896. A disturbing new lawsuit
is alleging that Vince McMahon
Copy !req
897. sexually abused and trafficked
a former employee.
Copy !req
898. A source tipped me off
about the lawsuit being filed,
Copy !req
899. and that happens
because of the topic of the suit.
Copy !req
900. I've written about sex-trafficking suits
or sexual misconduct.
Copy !req
901. I did not get the sense from people at WWE
that they knew the lawsuit was coming.
Copy !req
902. In fact, I heard from sources
that they were surprised.
Copy !req
903. Hello. How are you?
Copy !req
904. In the lawsuit, Janel Grant,
who worked there up until March 2022,
Copy !req
905. says McMahon forced her
to have sex with him and other men
Copy !req
906. at the WWE headquarters
in return for job security.
Copy !req
907. Janel Grant was the woman
who we first reported on back in 2022,
Copy !req
908. and what Grant says in this lawsuit
is that it was not a consensual affair.
Copy !req
909. The lawsuit paints a picture
of sexual abuse, sexual misconduct.
Copy !req
910. She says she was sexually assaulted,
Copy !req
911. that she was lured there
on the promise of career advancement,
Copy !req
912. and then eventually exploited sexually,
Copy !req
913. and then trafficked to other men
by Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
914. When that lawsuit came out...
Copy !req
915. Honestly, I didn't think anything in there
would shock me, and I was floored.
Copy !req
916. I mean, just absolutely stunned.
Copy !req
917. Grant's claims include
sexual acts involving defecation,
Copy !req
918. restraint...
Copy !req
919. Grant alleges
that he assaulted her
Copy !req
920. with sex toys named after male wrestlers.
Copy !req
921. One of the most striking things
about this particular lawsuit
Copy !req
922. was the fact that Janel Grant
had reproduced text messages
Copy !req
923. that she had received from Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
924. The suit included
screenshots of vulgar texts
Copy !req
925. that McMahon allegedly sent to Grant,
becoming more graphic, dark, and sadistic.
Copy !req
926. "I'm the only one who owns you,"
one message read,
Copy !req
927. "and controls who I want to 'blank' you."
Copy !req
928. Granted, we're only seeing
her side of these text messages,
Copy !req
929. the text message she wants to see,
and maybe we'll see more in the future,
Copy !req
930. but it just gave such a window
into this relationship
Copy !req
931. that you often don't see,
Copy !req
932. especially in relationships
with this power imbalance.
Copy !req
933. This is one
of the most brazen examples
Copy !req
934. in a company setting that I've seen
Copy !req
935. where an executive
isn't really taking a lot of steps
Copy !req
936. to hide the behavior.
Copy !req
937. The lawsuit also accuses McMahon
Copy !req
938. of sharing sexually explicit photos
of Grant with other WWE employees,
Copy !req
939. including an unnamed wrestler
Copy !req
940. who the company
was trying to re-sign in 2021,
Copy !req
941. without her consent.
Copy !req
942. We found out from sources
that the identity is Brock Lesnar,
Copy !req
943. which is one of WWE's biggest names.
Copy !req
944. She alleges that McMahon
shared the explicit photos with him
Copy !req
945. and informed her
that he likes what he sees.
Copy !req
946. After the star agreed to a new contract,
Copy !req
947. McMahon told her that sex acts with her
were part of the deal.
Copy !req
948. In a statement,
Vince McMahon's spokesperson says,
Copy !req
949. "This lawsuit is replete with lies,
Copy !req
950. obscene, made-up instances
that never occurred,
Copy !req
951. and a vindictive distortion of the truth."
Copy !req
952. "He will vigorously defend himself."
Copy !req
953. WWE's parent company, TKO Group,
Copy !req
954. says it's taking
these allegations seriously
Copy !req
955. and addressing the matter internally.
Copy !req
956. WWE founder Vince McMahon
has resigned as executive chairman
Copy !req
957. of the wrestling company's
parent organization.
Copy !req
958. McMahon has denied the allegations,
but says he's now resigning,
Copy !req
959. "Out of respect for the WWE Universe."
Copy !req
960. The fact that he resigns
the day after the lawsuit is filed
Copy !req
961. suggests that things have changed.
Copy !req
962. He's in a new company,
he no longer has the same control,
Copy !req
963. and if someone asks him to leave,
he's gotta leave.
Copy !req
964. At that point,
Vince was fully pushed out
Copy !req
965. of any role in TKO or WWE.
Copy !req
966. And after the Janel Grant accusations,
Copy !req
967. you start hearing rumors and accusations
from a variety of sources.
Copy !req
968. - There's Ashley!
- Well, here she comes!
Copy !req
969. In 2016, Ashley Massaro claimed
that she had been raped
Copy !req
970. during a WWE tour of Kuwait
by a man posing as a military doctor.
Copy !req
971. She accused WWE
Copy !req
972. of not responding seriously
to her allegations when she told them.
Copy !req
973. She says that Vince McMahon knew about it,
Copy !req
974. and that WWE functionally covered it up
to protect the business.
Copy !req
975. WWE put out a statement
completely denying these claims,
Copy !req
976. and they basically said
they were never informed this took place,
Copy !req
977. and if they had been,
they would've reported it.
Copy !req
978. A decade later, in 2019,
Copy !req
979. Massaro was found dead
in an apparent suicide.
Copy !req
980. After the Janel Grant allegations,
Copy !req
981. Ashley Massaro's attorney
Copy !req
982. released a previously unreleased
statement from Massaro
Copy !req
983. that claimed Vince McMahon
made sexual advances on her,
Copy !req
984. that Vince was well-known
for this sort of thing.
Copy !req
985. Massaro said she rejected him,
but from her point of view,
Copy !req
986. Vince responded by writing stories
whose sole purpose was to embarrass her.
Copy !req
987. You're gonna cry now?
Copy !req
988. Please, Vince, don't do this!
Not over this. Not—
Copy !req
989. You gonna cry? You gonna cry?
Copy !req
990. You're suspended indefinitely!
Copy !req
991. Since he was
kind of removed from his job,
Copy !req
992. Vince has sold all the stock
in the company and completely left.
Copy !req
993. One of the most powerful things for WWE
Copy !req
994. is that they have been able
to keep going without Vince,
Copy !req
995. and they've been thriving without Vince.
Copy !req
996. Let's kick off night two of WrestleMania!
Copy !req
997. We set records
this week for social media,
Copy !req
998. for merchandise, for sponsorship.
Copy !req
999. Just destroyed records for gate.
Copy !req
1000. This was legitimately
the biggest WrestleMania of all time.
Copy !req
1001. Here is your winner!
Copy !req
1002. And the new...
Copy !req
1003. Last question.
What do you think Vince's legacy will be?
Copy !req
1004. Um, Vince's legacy... My goodness. Um...
Copy !req
1005. He is...
Copy !req
1006. Uh... his legacy is just, um...
Copy !req
1007. I don't know. He...
Copy !req
1008. Oh man, ooh, that's a tough one, huh?
Copy !req
1009. Man, what do I think
Vince McMahon's legacy is gonna be?
Copy !req
1010. Man... that's a good question.
Copy !req
1011. Ooh, I think I might be
the wrong guy to be asked that question.
Copy !req
1012. What do you think
Vince's legacy will be?
Copy !req
1013. The greatest promoter of all time.
Copy !req
1014. He earned that.
Copy !req
1015. Even though there's things about him
that I don't like or respect,
Copy !req
1016. you can't take that from him.
Copy !req
1017. If you want a real view
of Vince McMahon and pro wrestling,
Copy !req
1018. there's a lot of positive,
and there's a lot of negative.
Copy !req
1019. I mean, he's the most important figure
in the history of wrestling.
Copy !req
1020. In his prime,
he was an absolute creative genius,
Copy !req
1021. but he's far from a saint.
Copy !req
1022. This is a man
Copy !req
1023. that wants more and more and more.
Copy !req
1024. I've got an insatiable appetite for life,
and I want more, more, more!
Copy !req
1025. It doesn't stop.
Copy !req
1026. And that's how you build something
Copy !req
1027. from a million,
to a billion, to ten billion.
Copy !req
1028. Here we go.
Copy !req
1029. Pro wrestling,
for all these years,
Copy !req
1030. painted life in this very simple way.
Copy !req
1031. There's good guys, and there's bad guys.
Copy !req
1032. I think the real lesson of Vince McMahon
is that life is never that simple.
Copy !req
1033. You have to be able to hold two things
in your head at the same time.
Copy !req
1034. Like, it's possible Vince McMahon
created this thing that we all love,
Copy !req
1035. and at the same time,
Copy !req
1036. he is an incredibly problematic,
potentially, like, deplorable human being.
Copy !req
1037. I'm sure he would like to go down
as the legend who created WWE,
Copy !req
1038. but anything good that he did
Copy !req
1039. is now inextricable
from all the bad stuff that he did.
Copy !req
1040. What's my legacy?
