1. The World Wrestling
Entertainment Ladies Champion,
Copy !req
2. Wendi Richter!
Copy !req
3. Wendi Richter was the champion,
and everything was fine for a while.
Copy !req
4. But Wendi had become a problem,
as I recall.
Copy !req
5. Every woman in professional wrestling
wants my belt,
Copy !req
6. but I want it too and I had to...
Copy !req
7. When it was time
to do the honors,
Copy !req
8. and pass that championship
to someone else, she resisted.
Copy !req
9. And it's like, "This is show business."
You know? "I'm writing a script."
Copy !req
10. "You're holding my championship belt."
Copy !req
11. "It's mine, it's not yours."
Copy !req
12. "I'm not gonna give it up."
Copy !req
13. "Well, all right."
Copy !req
14. "I'm gonna make you give it up, then."
Copy !req
15. This contest
is for the ladies' championship.
Copy !req
16. The audience is expecting a match.
Copy !req
17. You don't wanna fire someone
when you're expecting a match,
Copy !req
18. because you're screwing the public then.
Copy !req
19. So, get the match in the ring,
as my dad used to say,
Copy !req
20. and then you figure it out.
Copy !req
21. Bell's gone,
and we're underway in this title match-up.
Copy !req
22. The match is in the ring,
Wendi has the championship.
Copy !req
23. It's really easy.
Copy !req
24. Somewhere in this match,
Wendi's gonna get rolled up.
Copy !req
25. Told the ref simply,
"Just count to three."
Copy !req
26. Oh, small package. Nicely executed.
Copy !req
27. Whoa, was that close.
Copy !req
28. What was that?
Copy !req
29. The referee counted, "One."
I lifted my shoulder up,
Copy !req
30. and he counted, "two, three,"
even with my shoulders off the mat.
Copy !req
31. Wendi Richter has lost her title.
Copy !req
32. That was a very painful night.
Copy !req
33. My dreams were completely shattered.
Copy !req
34. I was humiliated,
and it was on television.
Copy !req
35. I didn't care.
Copy !req
36. It was like,
the public being in an uproar...
Copy !req
37. "Oh my God, you know,
it really wasn't a fair count."
Copy !req
38. My answer to that is
life's not fair sometimes,
Copy !req
39. and, you know, I don't fight fair.
Copy !req
40. There's a saying in wrestling,
"It's nothing personal, just business."
Copy !req
41. And I think that's what Vince McMahon is.
He's a businessman.
Copy !req
42. Wendi came back after the match.
Copy !req
43. She looked at me,
bowed her head, and walked out.
Copy !req
44. That was the last I ever saw of Wendi.
Copy !req
45. But for me, it was nothing personal.
Copy !req
46. This is business, and there's nothing
I wouldn't do for our business.
Copy !req
47. Vince McMahon came in
wearing a neck brace and smiling,
Copy !req
48. in his second week on trial
for steroid-selling conspiracy.
Copy !req
49. Today, McMahon was upstaged
by his former number one star, Hulk Hogan.
Copy !req
50. The man behind the character
would shed his Spandex
Copy !req
51. and jump into the ring
at US District Court
Copy !req
52. to testify with immunity
against Vince McMahon, his former boss.
Copy !req
53. This was to be the main event
Copy !req
54. in the prosecution's conspiracy case
against McMahon.
Copy !req
55. It was time for me to go testify.
I walked across the courtroom.
Copy !req
56. As I walked by,
there was Vince McMahon sitting there,
Copy !req
57. and we were
at each other's throats at the time.
Copy !req
58. The feds thought that
this is the perfect opportunity for me
Copy !req
59. to throw dirt on Vince
Copy !req
60. and all of a sudden run wild
with the wrestling world.
Copy !req
61. Went and testified,
and I think they were shocked.
Copy !req
62. On cross-examination,
a powerslam by the defense.
Copy !req
63. One of the last times I talked to Vince,
Copy !req
64. and it had been months and months
since we talked,
Copy !req
65. one of the last things I said to him,
Copy !req
66. "Brother, we go all the way up together,
and we go all the way down together."
Copy !req
67. "Don't forget that."
Copy !req
68. As far as Hulk Hogan on the stand,
Copy !req
69. I can tell you
that the government was surprised.
Copy !req
70. I could see the faces on the prosecutors.
Copy !req
71. "This is not what we were expecting."
Because Hogan totally backed Vince.
Copy !req
72. Did the government
know what you'd say?
Copy !req
73. No, I wouldn't tell them.
Copy !req
74. I just said, "I'll say whatever
you guys need me to say."
Copy !req
75. Told them what they wanted to hear,
but I knew what I was gonna say.
Copy !req
76. I was gonna tell the truth.
Copy !req
77. He didn't sell steroids.
He didn't tell people to take them.
Copy !req
78. All the stuff they said about him
was not true.
Copy !req
79. He was crafty in terms of
giving the government what they wanted
Copy !req
80. to a certain extent,
but not what they really wanted.
Copy !req
81. They really wanted someone to say,
"Vince McMahon told me to take steroids."
Copy !req
82. They even called me.
They wanted me to testify against Vince.
Copy !req
83. "Did Vince encourage you to do steroids?"
Copy !req
84. I said, "No, I was using steroids
before I met Vince."
Copy !req
85. He let us do it, let's put it thataway,
but he didn't sell it to us.
Copy !req
86. There was a strong influence
to take them, just based on common sense
Copy !req
87. and realizing all the guys that are
on steroids are the main event guys,
Copy !req
88. but Vince telling me
or any other wrestler to take steroids?
Copy !req
89. I never saw it.
Copy !req
90. Vince isn't going to someone and going,
"Hey, you, go on steroids."
Copy !req
91. But would he say,
"Hey, you need to work out harder,"
Copy !req
92. thinking they'll go on steroids?
Copy !req
93. Um... who knows?
Copy !req
94. I wasn't guilty of anything.
Copy !req
95. Didn't change the fact these bastards
were coming after me for no good reason.
Copy !req
96. So, naturally, I'm concerned.
Copy !req
97. This is my liberty,
Copy !req
98. and when you're about to hear the—
the verdict, it's like, "Holy shit."
Copy !req
99. That's a moment you'll never forget.
Copy !req
100. That's a moment whereby
my life is about to change.
Copy !req
101. World Wrestling Entertainment
head Vince McMahon
Copy !req
102. allowed himself just
the slightest expression of relief
Copy !req
103. as the verdict was read.
Copy !req
104. The verdict, not guilty.
Copy !req
105. Cheers from fans
roared through the courtroom.
Copy !req
106. An emotional hug
from his wife of 27 years, Linda.
Copy !req
107. I was there. The verdict happened and, uh...
Copy !req
108. it was relief.
Copy !req
109. it shouldn't have gone to trial.
They didn't have evidence to convict him.
Copy !req
110. Hello, I'm Vince McMahon...
Copy !req
111. I think they did it because
they thought Vince was a bad guy,
Copy !req
112. If you're a newspaper reporter,
you can go after him for that.
Copy !req
113. If you're gonna put him on trial,
you have to have more than that.
Copy !req
114. If there were any doubters
Copy !req
115. as to what World Wrestling Entertainment
was and is all about,
Copy !req
116. I think this just cleared up all of them.
Copy !req
117. I remember Linda, "It proved
we didn't have a steroid problem."
Copy !req
118. And it's like, no,
the case proved, by all testimony,
Copy !req
119. that most of your guys were on steroids,
and your biggest stars were on steroids.
Copy !req
120. That's what the case proved.
Copy !req
121. Gonna try to portray him as the good guy,
but Vince was the bad guy.
Copy !req
122. He wasn't convicted,
nor should he have been,
Copy !req
123. but he wasn't the good guy.
Copy !req
124. I don't know
that I learned really anything.
Copy !req
125. The only thing I learned about business is
some people in the government suck.
Copy !req
126. World Wrestling...
Copy !req
127. Vince always paints himself
as the victim in this trial.
Copy !req
128. I don't think it was a surprise
that he was found innocent.
Copy !req
129. I don't— I don't mean to imply
that he should have ended up guilty,
Copy !req
130. but there are rumors and reports
Copy !req
131. about everything Vince's team did
to try to win.
Copy !req
132. Stories of contacting witnesses,
of payoffs, jury tampering,
Copy !req
133. all of which paints Vince
in a way that's very different
Copy !req
134. than the way
he would like to portray himself.
Copy !req
135. Stay tuned...
Copy !req
136. So after the trial,
after this whole series of scandals,
Copy !req
137. Vince probably felt invincible.
Copy !req
138. But that wasn't the case.
Copy !req
139. Regardless
of what the outcome was,
Copy !req
140. the trial affected business in a huge way.
Copy !req
141. Things got tight, and things got scary.
Copy !req
142. Some executives left. I don't blame them.
Copy !req
143. Would I wish they didn't leave
and what have you?
Copy !req
144. Sure I do.
Copy !req
145. Uh, because it hurt the company,
the fact that they left.
Copy !req
146. During that period,
their business struggled.
Copy !req
147. They had years that they lost money.
Their revenues were way down.
Copy !req
148. They were, um,
in pretty big financial straits.
Copy !req
149. The company took
a huge drop in attendance.
Copy !req
150. No more sell-outs.
Copy !req
151. Business wasn't the same as it was
when Hulk Hogan was on top.
Copy !req
152. What Vince was looking for
Copy !req
153. was someone that
would replace Hulk as the face of WWE,
Copy !req
154. and Vince thought it could be Lex.
Copy !req
155. Made in the USA, Lex Luger!
Copy !req
156. We did put the machine,
so to speak, behind Lex Luger
Copy !req
157. and thought he was gonna be awesome.
Copy !req
158. Let's take a look now
at some footage of the Lex Express.
Copy !req
159. Lex was okay, but nowhere near Hulk Hogan.
Copy !req
160. I know it, you know it,
everyone out there knows it...
Copy !req
161. Lex just wasn't capable
of connecting with the audience.
Copy !req
162. Lex was just another
in a long chain of guys
Copy !req
163. trying to fill Hulk's shoes.
Copy !req
164. They had to replace Hulk Hogan,
Copy !req
165. and the guy that pulled the sword
out of the stone was Bret Hart.
Copy !req
166. Bret!
Copy !req
167. Go get 'em, champ.
Copy !req
168. Wow.
Copy !req
169. The New Generation was a new era.
We have new stars. We have Bret Hart.
Copy !req
170. You know, in the WWE,
there is a lot of changes.
Copy !req
171. Then we have Razor Ramon.
Copy !req
172. There's only one man
who is oozing machismo.
Copy !req
173. We had Kevin Nash.
Copy !req
174. On lives the new generation!
Copy !req
175. And we have Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
176. I'm the Heartbreak Kid,
Shawn Michaels, Jack.
Copy !req
177. I'm the man that made history.
Copy !req
178. Once you knew that it was
no longer sort of the Hogan era,
Copy !req
179. it kind of just put
a question mark on everything.
Copy !req
180. Everything is up for grabs.
Copy !req
181. For most of us in the locker room,
it got a bit more hopeful
Copy !req
182. that this was kind of anybody's ballgame.
Copy !req
183. Hulk's gone, now who's gonna step up?
Copy !req
184. That was the mindset.
Copy !req
185. And there were plenty of guys
that were waiting to fill that void.
Copy !req
186. The guys that we had,
the New Generation guys,
Copy !req
187. like myself and Undertaker,
Copy !req
188. some of the best wrestlers maybe ever.
Copy !req
189. I was kind of proud to be the torchbearer
for the New Generation.
Copy !req
190. There were many liabilities
on the company at that time,
Copy !req
191. and I was the safest guy.
Copy !req
192. Bret Hart's not gonna get busted
with an underage girl in a hotel,
Copy !req
193. or, "We found a kilo of cocaine
in his bag."
Copy !req
194. It seems to me
that you bring a certain humility.
Copy !req
195. That's why Vince said,
Copy !req
196. "We're gonna make you champion
for a long time."
Copy !req
197. "You can hold the fort while
we deal with all these issues right now."
Copy !req
198. Bret comes from the Hart family,
Copy !req
199. which has produced
many, many performers in the past.
Copy !req
200. Very interesting family.
Copy !req
201. Bret didn't have all that much charisma.
Copy !req
202. He had some, enough.
Copy !req
203. So it was kind of nip and tuck
for a while.
Copy !req
204. At the same time,
during the course of that,
Copy !req
205. Ted Turner starts grabbing
some of the talent,
Copy !req
206. so had to deal with that as well.
Copy !req
207. Ted opened up the checkbook
and said to the people working there,
Copy !req
208. "You can do whatever you want.
Just make this happen."
Copy !req
209. WCW is different than WWE,
Copy !req
210. because there was
so much more money there.
Copy !req
211. I mean, I cut these crazy deals
when I first walked in,
Copy !req
212. and it was like dying and going to heaven
as far as the wrestling business.
Copy !req
213. The amount of money he was offering them
Copy !req
214. was far greater than the amount
they had ever made here,
Copy !req
215. so it was logical for a lot of them
to leave and go join Ted's organization.
Copy !req
216. And what you gonna do?
Copy !req
217. Shortly after Hulk Hogan,
Copy !req
218. Randy Savage
all of a sudden became available.
Copy !req
219. Unfortunately, Randy Savage
has been unable to sign a contract
Copy !req
220. with the WWE...
Copy !req
221. That was the next big one.
Copy !req
222. That's when things started to really feel
like we had momentum.
Copy !req
223. After Hulk jumped on board
and after Randy jumped on board,
Copy !req
224. people were looking at WCW
a little differently.
Copy !req
225. At one point,
I had a meeting with Ted Turner,
Copy !req
226. and he said, "Eric, what's it gonna take
to be competitive with WWE?"
Copy !req
227. I said, "Well, Ted, Monday Night Raw,
Copy !req
228. you know that's on Monday night
on USA prime time, right?"
Copy !req
229. "We're on Saturday night
at 6:05 Eastern, 3:05 Pacific."
Copy !req
230. "We can't compete."
Copy !req
231. And without missing a beat,
Copy !req
232. Ted looked over
to the head of TNT and said,
Copy !req
233. "Give Eric two hours
every Monday night on TNT."
Copy !req
234. And I was like, "Wh— What?"
Copy !req
235. I just thought it'd be a good idea,
Copy !req
236. that'd at least show that
we've been on the map for so long.
Copy !req
237. We have been hammerlocked, sucker-punched,
Copy !req
238. beat up, jumped on, stomped out,
Copy !req
239. chairs broken over our heads,
Copy !req
240. all the wrestling stuff,
by Vince for so long,
Copy !req
241. that I just thought
we'll just go head-to-head with him
Copy !req
242. and see how it goes.
We'll get in the ring with him.
Copy !req
243. As soon as I heard
they were gonna go head-to-head,
Copy !req
244. that was like,
"Ooh-ooh. We're in trouble."
Copy !req
245. I don't know what's gonna happen,
but won't be good.
Copy !req
246. Or it was gonna put us
out of business, quite frankly.
Copy !req
247. Welcome back to the action
here on the debut edition
Copy !req
248. of WCW Monday Nitro...
Copy !req
249. Now I've got this thing called Nitro,
Copy !req
250. I've got to figure out
a way to create some real surprises.
Copy !req
251. What a matchup
we have got in store.
Copy !req
252. What? What in the hell is he doing here?
Copy !req
253. For their first show,
they had Lex Luger show up.
Copy !req
254. We had him on one of our live events
the Sunday night before,
Copy !req
255. and then he appeared on Nitro
the very next night.
Copy !req
256. Whoa! Wait a minute!
Copy !req
257. It was a big surprise.
It was like, "Oh my God."
Copy !req
258. What are you doing here, Luger?
Copy !req
259. When Lex walked out,
not only was the audience in shock,
Copy !req
260. but everybody in WWE was in shock,
Copy !req
261. because they thought
he was still under contract.
Copy !req
262. And he's not.
Copy !req
263. It was fortuitous
in the sense of timing
Copy !req
264. because Lex Luger was tired of WWE.
Copy !req
265. He wasn't happy there.
Copy !req
266. So I said, "Lex, here's the deal.
We're gonna do a deal."
Copy !req
267. "You cannot tell anybody.
You can't tell WWE."
Copy !req
268. "You just go about your business."
Copy !req
269. I'm here for one reason...
Copy !req
270. Yeah, that was embarrassing.
That was really embarrassing.
Copy !req
271. It pissed Vince off.
Copy !req
272. It was a beautiful thing.
Copy !req
273. Lex Luger, you're a good man.
Copy !req
274. All I had with these guys
was handshakes, not a contract expiring.
Copy !req
275. I just had handshakes.
It had worked for years.
Copy !req
276. No longer was it working
because of Ted's enormous wealth.
Copy !req
277. And I was like,
"Man. Wow, this is brutal."
Copy !req
278. Because you helped get these talents over,
you helped build them,
Copy !req
279. then all of a sudden, poof. They're gone.
Copy !req
280. They'd one-upped us.
Copy !req
281. It looked like
that was the cool place to go,
Copy !req
282. that people are leaving WWE to go to WCW
Copy !req
283. because WCW is new,
it's cool, it's different.
Copy !req
284. Eric was ruthless.
Copy !req
285. It absolutely set the tone.
And that was the intent.
Copy !req
286. After realizing I can't be
better than them at what they do,
Copy !req
287. what are my options?
Copy !req
288. I started making a list of every way
that I could be different than the WWE.
Copy !req
289. Top of the list, they're taped.
Copy !req
290. Hmm. Okay. I'm live.
Copy !req
291. At Nitro, we are coming to you live!
Copy !req
292. They're cartoonish, because they're
appealing to a teen and preteen audience.
Copy !req
293. I'm gonna be more real.
Copy !req
294. I wanted my characters
to appeal to an older audience.
Copy !req
295. I wanted my stories
to be more reality-based.
Copy !req
296. I'm not gonna try
to land my plane over here.
Copy !req
297. I'm gonna land my plane over here.
Copy !req
298. I wanted Nitro to be recognized
Copy !req
299. as the wrestling company where
you never knew what was going to happen.
Copy !req
300. I knew it was full-blown warfare
from that point on,
Copy !req
301. because I know how Vince
feels about his competition.
Copy !req
302. He wants to destroy it and then eat it.
Copy !req
303. Hello, everybody,
and welcome! We are live!
Copy !req
304. We are not like
the World Whining Entertainment,
Copy !req
305. which is a taped, canned show.
Copy !req
306. I had live TV now,
Copy !req
307. so I had the ability to do things
that my competition couldn't do.
Copy !req
308. That gave me
a really strong tactical advantage.
Copy !req
309. At that time, Monday Night Raw
was still being taped,
Copy !req
310. and the results
of those tapings were public,
Copy !req
311. because there were five or six
or seven thousand people in the arena.
Copy !req
312. As soon as our show would open up,
I would say, "Yeah, we're live
Copy !req
313. and anything can happen.
Not like those other guys."
Copy !req
314. "In fact, don't bother watching that show.
Here's what happened."
Copy !req
315. And I'd give away the finishes.
Copy !req
316. In case you're tempted
to grab the remote control,
Copy !req
317. check out the competition, don't bother.
Copy !req
318. Shawn Michaels beat the big guy
with a superkick.
Copy !req
319. Stay right here. It's live.
It's where the action is.
Copy !req
320. They would give away the results.
That hurt us for quite some time.
Copy !req
321. Aggravated the hell out of us for sure.
Copy !req
322. It's little things like that
that just went and...
Copy !req
323. It was digs, constant digs.
Copy !req
324. I wanted to upset the WWE audience,
Copy !req
325. because I knew if I upset them enough,
Copy !req
326. they'd tune in to see
what kind of dastardly stuff
Copy !req
327. I was gonna do next week.
Copy !req
328. There were many things that they did
to aggravate the hell out of us,
Copy !req
329. uh, which, when I'm angered, um,
Copy !req
330. then I'm gonna focus all the more.
Copy !req
331. Everybody that I knew
that was close to Vince,
Copy !req
332. like Hulk, like Randy,
they would say, "Vince will never sell."
Copy !req
333. He doesn't sell.
Copy !req
334. He never sold a thing.
Copy !req
335. Selling is wearing your emotions
on your face.
Copy !req
336. Yeah, Vince'll never
let you see him sweat.
Copy !req
337. "Don't sell it.
Never acknowledge the competition."
Copy !req
338. The more people would tell me that,
the more I'd go, "Watch. I'll get him."
Copy !req
339. Eric would bring out
our former women's champion
Copy !req
340. with our championship belt,
Copy !req
341. and live on their show,
Copy !req
342. throws it in the trash.
Copy !req
343. That was upsetting.
Copy !req
344. It was like, "Oh my God."
Copy !req
345. "What else are they gonna do to us?"
Copy !req
346. I kept gnawing at him and biting him
and doing everything I could
Copy !req
347. to get him to react, and he did.
Copy !req
348. Billionaire Ted. First of all...
Copy !req
349. They started doing
the Billionaire Ted skits.
Copy !req
350. That was the first real sell.
Copy !req
351. I finally got him to react,
which means he was off balance.
Copy !req
352. Well, why can't I buy the WWE?
Copy !req
353. When I saw them, it's like, "Let's tape
these things. I gotta run 'em up to Ted."
Copy !req
354. We brought them up to Ted,
and Ted laughed his ass off.
Copy !req
355. He thought they were funny as hell.
Copy !req
356. That's supposed to be the Hulkster.
Copy !req
357. I said, "We're trying
to have some fun with him."
Copy !req
358. And then Kay Koplovitz shut us down.
Copy !req
359. It was really distasteful.
Copy !req
360. We didn't like it particularly,
Copy !req
361. even though
we were competitors with Turner.
Copy !req
362. It just didn't belong on our air.
It isn't who we wanted to be at USA.
Copy !req
363. Kay Koplovitz made us stop
because Ted was a friend of hers.
Copy !req
364. We're friends. Friendly competitors,
I guess you might say.
Copy !req
365. USA Network
suggested that we stop,
Copy !req
366. because they were receiving heat
from folks in the Turner organization,
Copy !req
367. saying, "This is over the line,
Copy !req
368. and now you're talking about
how much lithium he takes..."
Copy !req
369. Jane, where's my lithium?
Copy !req
370. In hindsight,
I wish that we hadn't done that.
Copy !req
371. I think we should have been above it.
But we did.
Copy !req
372. And that's also where I figured out
Razor Ramon and Diesel,
Copy !req
373. they're not staying.
Copy !req
374. Because I asked
Razor and Diesel to do one,
Copy !req
375. and they didn't wanna do it.
Copy !req
376. "Why wouldn't you do this?"
"Yeah, I just don't want to."
Copy !req
377. "Are you going there?"No, no, no."
Copy !req
378. I had a long conversation,
with Scott Hall, Razor Ramon,
Copy !req
379. and Diesel, Kevin Nash.
Copy !req
380. They really didn't wanna go to WCW.
Copy !req
381. At the same time,
they have to look into the mirror
Copy !req
382. and have to know, "Wait a minute.
It's better for my family
Copy !req
383. from a paycheck standpoint
to go there than it is here."
Copy !req
384. That was just pure money and schedule.
Copy !req
385. They were offered more money
and a better schedule.
Copy !req
386. When Scott and Kevin
signed with WCW,
Copy !req
387. certainly from a professional standpoint,
thrilled for them.
Copy !req
388. From a personal standpoint, it hurt a bit
because I was gonna miss my buddies.
Copy !req
389. There was a group of us that
were all friends backstage. "The Kliq."
Copy !req
390. Kevin Nash,
Copy !req
391. Scott Hall,
Copy !req
392. Shawn Michaels,
Copy !req
393. and myself.
Copy !req
394. The Kliq sort of became this famous thing
Copy !req
395. that everybody knew about
Copy !req
396. even though it was never portrayed on TV.
Copy !req
397. So, you flash forward to the final night
of Diesel and Razor Ramon.
Copy !req
398. It's not a pay-per-view.
It's a live event with no TV.
Copy !req
399. Earlier in the day,
Shawn had talked to Vince
Copy !req
400. about doing some kind of tribute
to those guys at the end of the night,
Copy !req
401. and Vince agrees to,
"Something can happen."
Copy !req
402. I remember him asking me,
"Is it important to you, Shawn?"
Copy !req
403. I said, "Yes, sir." And he goes,
"Then it's important to me. Go ahead."
Copy !req
404. Since two of them were leaving,
you know, "Okay. You got my blessing."
Copy !req
405. Kevin and Shawn
were wrestling each other in a cage match.
Copy !req
406. They get to the end of the match,
and we all end up in the cage together.
Copy !req
407. There's this big embrace moment.
Copy !req
408. Oh yeah!
Copy !req
409. Basically, a curtain call.
Copy !req
410. From an old-timer, uh, it was
sacrilege to have rivals do that
Copy !req
411. and to just let everybody know,
"Hey, guys. You know, show's over."
Copy !req
412. "We really love each other.
Everything's good."
Copy !req
413. I was actually there
at the Garden that night.
Copy !req
414. I'm sitting there in the audience
like, "What is this?"
Copy !req
415. "I can't believe they're doing this.
My dad's gonna be so mad."
Copy !req
416. Part of me thought
it was a little bit cool,
Copy !req
417. but part of me was like,
"Oh, I know how wrong this is."
Copy !req
418. To anyone of my age, it was cool.
Copy !req
419. But to your older generation
of producers and wrestlers,
Copy !req
420. it was the cardinal sin.
Copy !req
421. I wasn't there that night,
but, yeah, I was with the company.
Copy !req
422. - Yeah, I got thoughts on that. Yeah.
- What are your thoughts?
Copy !req
423. I didn't like it.
Copy !req
424. They killed wrestling that day.
Copy !req
425. That was when wrestling
wasn't real anymore.
Copy !req
426. We'd pulled the curtain back
and said, "This is how it works."
Copy !req
427. That was the unveiling of
the new direction that wrestling would be.
Copy !req
428. It's not wrestling anymore.
It's entertainment.
Copy !req
429. When they came back out of the...
out of the ring,
Copy !req
430. well, there were a number of performers
other than them
Copy !req
431. who really hit the roof.
Like I can't imagine...
Copy !req
432. It was what we call
a kayfabe type situation.
Copy !req
433. So if you go back
to the way the business was,
Copy !req
434. there's a thing called kayfabe.
Copy !req
435. Kayfabe.
Copy !req
436. Kayfabe is a carnival term, initially.
Copy !req
437. Kayfabe is the fiction
that is being produced by a con artist
Copy !req
438. where everybody who's involved in the con
agrees to maintain this reality.
Copy !req
439. Kayfabe is basically
keeping the illusion that it's real.
Copy !req
440. You say "kayfabe," and you know
that you gotta be in character
Copy !req
441. and pretend everything is real.
Copy !req
442. You know, good guys stayed with good guys,
Copy !req
443. and bad guys stayed with bad guys,
Copy !req
444. and never should the two intermingle.
Copy !req
445. And for years and years,
we tried to work off of the premise
Copy !req
446. that wrestling was not predetermined,
Copy !req
447. and that when you had a feud
with somebody, it was a blood feud,
Copy !req
448. and it carried on outside of the ring.
Copy !req
449. The way I came up,
and in the time period I came up,
Copy !req
450. I, I lived that,
and I believed in that mindset,
Copy !req
451. even though I knew,
like, they know that I'm a real person,
Copy !req
452. I always wanted to cast that doubt, like,
Copy !req
453. "That dude is legit not right."
Copy !req
454. "He thinks he is that guy."
Copy !req
455. I kind of protected the business
and protected the character so much.
Copy !req
456. I was just always trying
to keep people intrigued.
Copy !req
457. But it was becoming this antiquated thing.
Like, everybody knew.
Copy !req
458. In that period of time, there were what
were called newsletters, dirt sheets,
Copy !req
459. with a lot of rumor and innuendo.
Copy !req
460. So, if you went to a show,
Copy !req
461. people are talking about
what's real and what's not.
Copy !req
462. I honestly don't have any idea
why kayfabe and all that
Copy !req
463. was still so important.
Copy !req
464. And I guess that was our point
with the curtain call.
Copy !req
465. We felt like everybody already knew then.
Copy !req
466. What was sincerely meant to be
just an innocent act
Copy !req
467. turned into such controversy.
Copy !req
468. I felt like, "I don't know,
was I talked into this?"
Copy !req
469. "Was I not?"
Copy !req
470. You know, I let it happen.
Copy !req
471. At the same time,
I can't let it happen again.
Copy !req
472. So, um, there were some repercussions.
Copy !req
473. Kev's gone, Scott's gone,
Shawn's WWE champion.
Copy !req
474. Heads are gonna roll,
Copy !req
475. but it's gonna only be one,
and it's going to be mine.
Copy !req
476. Somebody has to pay for that,
Copy !req
477. and, you know,
in that particular case, it was Hunter.
Copy !req
478. So, at that point in time,
I was supposed to win King of the Ring,
Copy !req
479. and that's all gonna go away.
Copy !req
480. I said, "You know, Vince,
the one thing that's crazy to me..."
Copy !req
481. "... the biggest reaction of the night
by far was that moment."
Copy !req
482. "The world is changing,
Copy !req
483. and we're going to have
to change with it, I think."
Copy !req
484. And he said,
"Yeah, but it's not right now."
Copy !req
485. "I gotta do something.
I can't just let this go."
Copy !req
486. And to quote Vince,
"You're going to have to learn to eat shit
Copy !req
487. and like the taste of it."
Copy !req
488. Vince was not yet ready to adapt,
to evolve into the modern age.
Copy !req
489. But WCW was.
Copy !req
490. Welcome back live
to the first hour of this edition
Copy !req
491. of WCW Monday Nitro on TNT.
Copy !req
492. I'd been thinking about this storyline
in my head for a long time.
Copy !req
493. Called it "The Outsiders."
Copy !req
494. But I couldn't quite make it work
the way I wanted to make it work
Copy !req
495. because I didn't have the right talent.
Copy !req
496. And now with Scott coming in
and Kevin Nash becoming available,
Copy !req
497. I now have the perfect cast.
Copy !req
498. You people, you know who I am.
Copy !req
499. But you don't know why I'm here.
Copy !req
500. It was two guys coming in from the outside
to wreak havoc inside of WCW.
Copy !req
501. This is where the big boys play, huh?
Copy !req
502. We ain't here to play.
Copy !req
503. The Outsiders
showing up and coming to WCW
Copy !req
504. is maybe the last example
Copy !req
505. of where fans could not fully tell,
Copy !req
506. "Is this real?"
Copy !req
507. The way I brought them in,
some of the less-than-nuanced dialogue,
Copy !req
508. led certain people to believe
that they were there on WWE's behalf.
Copy !req
509. Do you work for the WWE?
Copy !req
510. The audience wasn't sure
if it was real or if it was scripted.
Copy !req
511. That's the sweet spot.
Copy !req
512. You don't jack us around. Don't jack us...
Copy !req
513. - Oh, for crying— Oh!
Copy !req
514. What are they doing?
Copy !req
515. - Security!
- Get up there right now!
Copy !req
516. Call security!
Copy !req
517. It was a hell of a great idea.
Copy !req
518. Worked so well that Vince McMahon
decided he had to sue us.
Copy !req
519. We sued them because they were
trampling on our intellectual property.
Copy !req
520. They were presenting Scott Hall
as Razor Ramon.
Copy !req
521. They didn't say his name was Razor Ramon,
Copy !req
522. but it was as close to Razor Ramon
as you could get
Copy !req
523. without saying, "Hey, Razor Ramon."
Copy !req
524. You're stealing.
Copy !req
525. You know, that's—
That's not the right way to do business.
Copy !req
526. Eh, stealing is in the eye
of the beholder, isn't it?
Copy !req
527. It's funny, because immediately,
Vince went into sympathetic babyface mode.
Copy !req
528. He started whining
like a little schoolgirl with that.
Copy !req
529. "Big bad billionaire Ted's
trying to run us out of business."
Copy !req
530. When you have the resources
of a, uh, of a Ted Turner,
Copy !req
531. and you use these resources
in a predatory fashion
Copy !req
532. in an effort to put
a family-owned business out of action,
Copy !req
533. I think it's time...
Copy !req
534. "Big bad billionaire Ted
Copy !req
535. is trying to hurt this
small little family-run business."
Copy !req
536. There has been a systematic, uh, attempt
Copy !req
537. to raid the World Wrestling Entertainment
of its talent.
Copy !req
538. "They raided our talent."
Copy !req
539. Vince did the exact same thing
to Verne Gagne and the AWA
Copy !req
540. and other territories.
Copy !req
541. He literally went into those territories
and offered their talent better deals.
Copy !req
542. That is exactly the MO
of Vince McMahon in 1984 and 1985.
Copy !req
543. He took stars other people had created
in certain parts of the country
Copy !req
544. and signed them up for more money,
Copy !req
545. and God bless him, he had the right to.
Free enterprise.
Copy !req
546. But they had the right to do it too,
because it's free enterprise.
Copy !req
547. One of your quotes was that
Turner engaged in predatory practices.
Copy !req
548. - Right.
- Did you...
Copy !req
549. You didn't see any similarity
to what you were doing in the territories?
Copy !req
550. No. Again, Ted's philosophy was,
Copy !req
551. "Let's go hurt.
I'm gonna hurt my competitor."
Copy !req
552. And that's not mine. I wanna go compete.
Copy !req
553. You didn't look at
what Ted was doing as competing?
Copy !req
554. Sure, I did.
Copy !req
555. You said your philosophy
is different than Ted's.
Copy !req
556. - He's trying to hurt the person.
- Right. Correct.
Copy !req
557. Some would think it might be hypocritical
for me to say,
Copy !req
558. "Uh, okay, I don't hurt someone else.
I just do what's best for me."
Copy !req
559. Yet, when someone comes after me,
I don't think they have the right.
Copy !req
560. Sure, they have the right.
Again, what I say a lot of times
Copy !req
561. is totally different than what I think.
Copy !req
562. Um, and the public
doesn't understand that sometimes.
Copy !req
563. As a businessman,
you have to throw things out there.
Copy !req
564. It's not really the way you feel,
Copy !req
565. but...
Copy !req
566. it controls thought process by doing that.
Copy !req
567. Vince is going to do
whatever it takes
Copy !req
568. to be successful on the business side.
Copy !req
569. And during the Monday Night Wars,
WCW was challenging us to fight.
Copy !req
570. A lot of people would tell you
that when Hall and Nash went to WCW,
Copy !req
571. that that was the turning point.
Copy !req
572. But if you go back
and you really look at the numbers
Copy !req
573. and you look at everything that happened,
Copy !req
574. what really turned the corner for WCW
Copy !req
575. was the Bash at the Beach,
Copy !req
576. where The Outsiders
were going to bring in the third member.
Copy !req
577. Who's it going to be?
Copy !req
578. I was there
at the Bash at the Beach,
Copy !req
579. and Scott Hall and Kevin Nash
have come from WWE
Copy !req
580. to almost wreck shop.
Copy !req
581. They were bad guys on this mission,
Copy !req
582. and they were claiming
that they had a third man.
Copy !req
583. He's here, and he's ready.
Copy !req
584. Now the "Who's the Third Man?" mystery
is out there in the audience, right?
Copy !req
585. The third man is here,
but he's not in the ring.
Copy !req
586. Now we're looking
at two-on-two in this hostile takeover.
Copy !req
587. Scott Hall
and Kevin Nash were winning.
Copy !req
588. And so, Hulk Hogan's coming out
to make the save.
Copy !req
589. - Hulk Hogan is here!
- Damn right he is!
Copy !req
590. Get 'em, Hulkster!
Copy !req
591. When I walked out
at Bash at the Beach,
Copy !req
592. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall
ran for their lives,
Copy !req
593. Yes, sir! Get 'em, Hogan!
Copy !req
594. The roof was coming off.
The hero was coming to save the day.
Copy !req
595. Hulk Hogan arrives— Hulk!
Copy !req
596. What's he doing?
Copy !req
597. - Is he the third man?
- Third man!
Copy !req
598. What the hell is going on?
Copy !req
599. When Hulk finally
dropped the leg on Randy Savage,
Copy !req
600. people were literally shocked.
Copy !req
601. - What the hell is going on?
- Oh God!
Copy !req
602. It was a huge defining moment
in all of sports entertainment,
Copy !req
603. because it was surreal to think
that the biggest babyface,
Copy !req
604. the biggest good guy
in the history of the industry,
Copy !req
605. is gonna go the other way.
Copy !req
606. Feels it all.
Copy !req
607. Hulksters with tears rolling down.
Copy !req
608. You can't turn Hulk Hogan bad.
You can't do that.
Copy !req
609. That was a big "holy shit" moment.
Copy !req
610. - A career of a lifetime.
- Right down the drain, kid.
Copy !req
611. When I walked out
to be a bad guy,
Copy !req
612. I knew this was either gonna be
the greatest moment of my career
Copy !req
613. or this would destroy my career.
Copy !req
614. That's the first time I'd ever been told
there's a thing that's too much heat.
Copy !req
615. And maybe this was.
Copy !req
616. That rumble was there.
It got kinda quiet. I'm like, "Shit."
Copy !req
617. I know we didn't have anybody
watching the ring
Copy !req
618. in case they started coming.
Copy !req
619. Back in the day,
I was used to them coming.
Copy !req
620. What do we got here?
We got a fan coming in.
Copy !req
621. He didn't last long.
Copy !req
622. There were people throwing stuff
in the ring and booing and screaming.
Copy !req
623. There were people crying.
Copy !req
624. I never thought I'd see
people throwing debris...
Copy !req
625. - At Hulk Hogan.
- ... at Hogan.
Copy !req
626. It was the most amazing moment
of my career.
Copy !req
627. When you want to get
everything you can out of the audience,
Copy !req
628. sometimes it's gotta be uncomfortable.
Copy !req
629. And it was just a very strong
punch to the gut for wrestling fans.
Copy !req
630. When they made Hogan a heel,
Copy !req
631. had that been something
you guys were considering ever?
Copy !req
632. No. Terry and I always thought
Copy !req
633. that we would simply
keep Hulk Hogan as a good guy,
Copy !req
634. always be someone standing up for justice.
Copy !req
635. Vince McMahon missed out
on the most lucrative opportunity.
Copy !req
636. He could've been the one
to turn Hulk Hogan heel.
Copy !req
637. Every piece of trash
that got thrown in the ring
Copy !req
638. was like a gold brick
as far as WCW was concerned.
Copy !req
639. When he did turn heel, it was like, "Wow."
He did that very well.
Copy !req
640. A lot of fans forget that I was a bad guy
Copy !req
641. when I first went to the WWE
to work for Vince's father,
Copy !req
642. so it wasn't like
this was my first barbecue.
Copy !req
643. And so I just slid into that
Snidely Whiplash evil Hollywood character.
Copy !req
644. Tell these people to shut up
if you wanna hear what I gotta say.
Copy !req
645. I went out there, and I wheeled
that promo from my hip, man.
Copy !req
646. That was nobody talking but me.
Copy !req
647. These two men right here came from
a great big organization up north.
Copy !req
648. I made that organization a monster.
Copy !req
649. I made people rich up there.
Copy !req
650. I wanted
to push hard against Vince
Copy !req
651. to prove a point that
it takes two to tango.
Copy !req
652. It just wasn't one guy that did all this.
It just wasn't Vince that did all this.
Copy !req
653. The man Hulk Hogan got bigger
than the whole organization, brother.
Copy !req
654. In those days,
it was a personal relationship
Copy !req
655. as well as a business one.
Copy !req
656. And when business goes wrong,
generally speaking,
Copy !req
657. the personal relationship goes wrong.
Copy !req
658. Vince is very much "business is business."
Copy !req
659. However, there are certain times
where the human being gets hurt.
Copy !req
660. With Hogan, it was personal.
Copy !req
661. That was the moment in time that...
Copy !req
662. shit changed.
Copy !req
663. You can call this
the New World Order of Wrestling, brother.
Copy !req
664. The Outsiders
eventually became the nWo storyline.
Copy !req
665. Here's the nWo!
Copy !req
666. Ready or not, here we come!
Copy !req
667. nWo was coming in
to take over WCW
Copy !req
668. and take all their biggest stars,
and eventually overcome WCW.
Copy !req
669. The nWo is the only way to go!
Copy !req
670. Yes, it was a storyline.
Yes, they were characters.
Copy !req
671. But in every sense of the word,
Copy !req
672. the nWo brand was in many respects
more powerful than the WCW brand.
Copy !req
673. During that period of time,
WCW was cool.
Copy !req
674. It had the cool factor going on.
Copy !req
675. I started to see the WWE as "less than."
Copy !req
676. New World Order. It was edgy,
like nothing that anyone had ever seen.
Copy !req
677. And they started kicking our ass
week after week after week.
Copy !req
678. When Hulk became a bad guy?
Copy !req
679. Switched.
Copy !req
680. And they beat us in the ratings,
and they didn't look back for 83 weeks.
Copy !req
681. How many weeks? 83 straight weeks!
Copy !req
682. For 83 straight weeks!
Copy !req
683. For 83 weeks? Was it 83, or was it 84?
Copy !req
684. My podcast is called 83 Weeks.
Copy !req
685. For 83 straight weeks,
we were stomping a mudhole in WWE.
Copy !req
686. We were so far ahead of them,
it wasn't funny.
Copy !req
687. For us to be winning,
you know, week after week after week,
Copy !req
688. it became infectious.
Copy !req
689. We thought we had the strongest team,
the better stories...
Copy !req
690. No way we thought we could lose.
Copy !req
691. Not only are they kicking our butts
in the ratings, they're mocking us.
Copy !req
692. They're really having their way with us.
Copy !req
693. This was a war, and I didn't know
whether or not we'd even stay in business,
Copy !req
694. because Turner was coming after us.
Copy !req
695. I'm either all the way in,
or I'm all the way out.
Copy !req
696. So, once we committed
to go after Vince, I was all in.
Copy !req
697. Is there any question now
Copy !req
698. what is the most powerful organization
in professional wrestling?
Copy !req
699. At some point, it was suggested to me
that I become a part of the nWo,
Copy !req
700. and it— it made sense.
Copy !req
701. I'm Eric Bischoff!
Copy !req
702. Because I was running WCW,
I was recognized as the president of WCW.
Copy !req
703. - Bischoff!
- Look who is leading them!
Copy !req
704. Who better to take over than the guy
that's actually writing the checks?
Copy !req
705. For this man, I would do anything.
Copy !req
706. In the beginning
of Monday Night Wars,
Copy !req
707. I don't think that Vince
even considered Eric Bischoff.
Copy !req
708. Vince looked at the Monday Night Wars
as something between Vince and Ted.
Copy !req
709. When you go back
and you listen to the interviews,
Copy !req
710. Vince always talked about Ted Turner.
Copy !req
711. Ted Turner's wrestling organization...
Copy !req
712. Ted Turner tried
to put him out of business.
Copy !req
713. Ted Turner this, Ted Turner that.
Copy !req
714. - Ted Turner...
- Ted Turner...
Copy !req
715. Ted... Ted... Ted, trying to own
World Wrestling Entertainment.
Copy !req
716. Was Vince McMahon
going to come out and say,
Copy !req
717. "Hey, this guy named Eric Bischoff
that's never been a wrestling executive,
Copy !req
718. has only been in a creative role
for about a year and a half,
Copy !req
719. is kicking my butt every week
for 83 weeks"?
Copy !req
720. He wanted the perception of the battle
Copy !req
721. to be between
Ted Turner the billionaire media mogul
Copy !req
722. and little old Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
723. That elevated Vince,
it made him the sympathetic babyface,
Copy !req
724. which is exactly what Vince wanted.
Copy !req
725. Do you remember the first time
Copy !req
726. hearing about Eric Bischoff?
Copy !req
727. Um, I didn't know—
Well, actually, I didn't realize this,
Copy !req
728. but years before, Eric had come to WWE
and auditioned as a television announcer.
Copy !req
729. Who's your hero, Eric?
Copy !req
730. My hero? Hulk Hogan, absolutely.
Copy !req
731. The man, the myth, the legend.
Copy !req
732. And I didn't get the job.
I was very disappointed.
Copy !req
733. Did you regret
not hiring him when you saw him show up?
Copy !req
734. - Regret not hiring him?
- Yeah.
Copy !req
735. Um...
Copy !req
736. - No.
- You don't regret it?
Copy !req
737. Um... I don't think I regret
anything in my life.
Copy !req
738. Eric did everything
he possibly could do, as anyone would,
Copy !req
739. but everything that they basically did
Copy !req
740. pretty much was a WWE creation
to begin with,
Copy !req
741. including when Turner took our talent
that we had created.
Copy !req
742. At that time,
I wanted to hang on to one of my stars.
Copy !req
743. So I made a deal with Bret.
Copy !req
744. He flew up to Calgary,
flew up to my house,
Copy !req
745. and gave me his offer
of a 20-year contract.
Copy !req
746. I owe it all to my WWE fans.
I'll be with the WWE forever.
Copy !req
747. All right! All right!
Copy !req
748. As soon as I signed, I said,
"This isn't gonna be good."
Copy !req
749. "Wrong thing ego-wise."
Copy !req
750. It's a— It was a bad move,
bad business move to try and keep Bret.
Copy !req
751. "I had to keep Bret."
Copy !req
752. "No, dumb-ass Vince, you didn't have to.
Just create new stars, Vince."
Copy !req
753. So in any event, now there's
a big contract, and it's not working.
Copy !req
754. So I go to Bret, and I said,
"Bret, look, I can't afford to pay you
Copy !req
755. what I'm paying you now."
Copy !req
756. My dad took Bret's contract
and showed Bret where the loopholes were,
Copy !req
757. and said, "You can use this as leverage
to help negotiate yourself
Copy !req
758. a much better deal with WCW."
Copy !req
759. So Bret went for the other guys
and, uh, was paid a lot of money.
Copy !req
760. Bret Hart happened to be
the WWE champion at the time.
Copy !req
761. All that my dad expected back was for Bret
Copy !req
762. to do the right thing business-wise
since he was leaving
Copy !req
763. and lose to Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
764. "You know, Bret, you have the property
around your waist that belonged to WWE."
Copy !req
765. "It didn't belong to you.
You didn't win it, you were granted that."
Copy !req
766. "I can't let you go to Turner
with the WWE championship belt."
Copy !req
767. "That doesn't make any sense."
Copy !req
768. Bret had different ideas.
Copy !req
769. Everybody felt like he should
drop the title to somebody before he goes,
Copy !req
770. and I don't even think
Bret had a problem losing the match.
Copy !req
771. It was losing it to me.
Copy !req
772. Shawn was a real dick at that time,
Copy !req
773. and that's just the truth.
Copy !req
774. The Bret and Shawn rivalry thing,
it was real and authentic.
Copy !req
775. Both Bret and I felt that Vince
and the WWE were kind of capitalizing
Copy !req
776. on this real-life dissension that we had.
Copy !req
777. Shawn and Bret, two great performers, uh...
were not getting along.
Copy !req
778. Shawn starting cutting
what we call shooting promos.
Copy !req
779. They would go off-script
and say something personal.
Copy !req
780. He stabbed World Wrestling Entertainment
in the back.
Copy !req
781. Why? For his financial gain.
Copy !req
782. After a while,
Copy !req
783. you begin to know what bothers somebody,
Copy !req
784. and, man, I poked that bear
like nobody's business.
Copy !req
785. I was... Look, I was such a prick.
Copy !req
786. I came close to punching Shawn
quite a few times.
Copy !req
787. Even though, lately,
you've had some "sunny" days, my friend...
Copy !req
788. Telling on national TV that
I'm banging Sunny, when I'm a married man,
Copy !req
789. you're crossing a line
where you're messing with my family.
Copy !req
790. You're messing with me
on a personal level, and it's bullshit.
Copy !req
791. What were your thoughts about that?
Copy !req
792. My thoughts at the time was,
"Well, this is good for television."
Copy !req
793. The Survivor Series,
presented live by Milton Bradley...
Copy !req
794. So we had
this last match in Montreal.
Copy !req
795. "Bret, I want you to do the honors
for Shawn tonight,
Copy !req
796. uh, because we need
someone to replace you."
Copy !req
797. And Bret said,
"Well, I don't wanna do that."
Copy !req
798. "Especially in Canada."
Copy !req
799. There was a... a phone call that happened
with Shawn, myself, and Vince.
Copy !req
800. Vince said, "Look, Bret's not gonna do it.
He refuses to do it."
Copy !req
801. I don't remember all the specifics,
but I was the one that was like,
Copy !req
802. "Fuck that.
If he won't do it, do it for him."
Copy !req
803. I met Vince
when I was 23 years old.
Copy !req
804. I've spent more time with him
than I have my own father.
Copy !req
805. I get emotional about it, 'cause it's... uh...
Copy !req
806. You know, I put him through a lot.
Copy !req
807. I was in a bad, bad place
for a lot of years, and he put up with it.
Copy !req
808. To me, he deserves
something in return for that.
Copy !req
809. And so, for that, I gave him my loyalty.
Copy !req
810. All he had to do was look at me
and say, "Shawn, this is what I want,"
Copy !req
811. and I did it.
Copy !req
812. On that night,
he did not want Bret Hart
Copy !req
813. walking out of that building
with the championship,
Copy !req
814. and I made sure that happened.
Copy !req
815. Day of, I was told
that it was gonna be a schmoz finish.
Copy !req
816. Everybody was gonna get involved.
We were gonna throw the match out,
Copy !req
817. and we'd figure out what to do afterwards.
Copy !req
818. A schmoz is a big brawl
with a bunch of different guys,
Copy !req
819. and the referee just throws it out.
Copy !req
820. No one really wins or loses,
and it was like, "That works for me."
Copy !req
821. But WWE had been screwing wrestlers
in different ways for a long time.
Copy !req
822. I knew about Wendi Richter,
so I didn't trust anything.
Copy !req
823. Never took my eyes off Shawn.
Copy !req
824. If he wants to make this a real fight,
Copy !req
825. we can make it a real fight
anytime he wants to.
Copy !req
826. I will fight him to the death.
Copy !req
827. - Look out!
- Shawn Michaels is in.
Copy !req
828. If you watch that match,
it's a great match.
Copy !req
829. It's a down-and-dirty fight
between guys that hate each other's guts.
Copy !req
830. Eventually,
Shawn puts me in the sharpshooter,
Copy !req
831. which is my finishing move,
Copy !req
832. and he, in fact, puts it on wrong.
Copy !req
833. If you see it,
I correct Shawn while he's doing it,
Copy !req
834. and he switches it and puts it on right,
and then turns me over,
Copy !req
835. and I can see the timekeeper,
and I see Vince yell at him.
Copy !req
836. I'm yelling at the timekeeper,
"Ring the bell, ring the bell."
Copy !req
837. Even though Bret never tapped out.
Copy !req
838. And he won't ring it.
He's, like, stunned. He's like...
Copy !req
839. And then I see Vince snap at him,
"Ring the fucking bell!"
Copy !req
840. Ring! Ring the bell, ring the bell!
Copy !req
841. The bell rings, and I'm screaming
on the headset. "Why'd you ring the bell?"
Copy !req
842. Oh shit!
Copy !req
843. And I can feel it.
Copy !req
844. Everything is coming to me now.
Like, "They did it. They did screw you."
Copy !req
845. I wanted to be out at ringside
so that he would know what happened,
Copy !req
846. and I took back what was mine.
Copy !req
847. Bret obviously didn't like that.
Copy !req
848. When you have a match
as hard as I was wrestling,
Copy !req
849. you get a fair bit of froth in your mouth.
Copy !req
850. I leaned over, and I spit on his face.
Copy !req
851. I got him bullseye.
Copy !req
852. Right into my eye.
Copy !req
853. That was gross, but nonetheless,
I thought, "Damn, how did he do that?"
Copy !req
854. Then I went out
and broke all the monitors
Copy !req
855. and smashed all them to pieces
on the floor.
Copy !req
856. It was just chaos.
Copy !req
857. Bret writes "WCW" in the air.
Copy !req
858. It's hard for people to imagine
how mad you can get
Copy !req
859. when you get betrayed like that
on national television
Copy !req
860. and, in a lot of ways, made a fool of.
Copy !req
861. My brother Owen was very calming.
Copy !req
862. He goes, "It wasn't right, what they did.
That was wrong."
Copy !req
863. "You have all the respect
of everybody in the dressing room."
Copy !req
864. That kind of stuff. He was very...
Copy !req
865. consoling to me at that time. And...
Copy !req
866. Fourteen years,
I've given Vince McMahon 100% every night.
Copy !req
867. I've bled for him, took front turnbuckles
at 100 miles an hour.
Copy !req
868. I've given him Christmas mornings
with my kids that never happened.
Copy !req
869. I've never missed a show.
I've given this guy everything I got.
Copy !req
870. I couldn't have given a man
more than what I gave Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
871. None of that meant anything when
Vince screwed me that day in Montreal.
Copy !req
872. When I walk back to that
dressing room, I'm ready to kill him.
Copy !req
873. Like, kill him. Beat him to death.
Copy !req
874. Shawn, you weren't in on that?
Copy !req
875. No fucking idea.
I didn't know, God as my fucking witness.
Copy !req
876. He came up immediately
and said, "Did you know?"
Copy !req
877. I said, "Hand to God, I did not."
Copy !req
878. Vince was so adamant.
Copy !req
879. We had to absolutely swear
that we knew nothing about this.
Copy !req
880. He was like, "I don't care who asks you,
you bold-face lie right to them
Copy !req
881. and say, 'I knew nothing about this.
This was a Vince McMahon call.'"
Copy !req
882. I swear to God, I knew nothing—
Copy !req
883. Yeah, swear to God all you want,
but someday, God is gonna strike you down.
Copy !req
884. It was chaos in the back,
and people everywhere were freaking out.
Copy !req
885. Just remember, someday, Hunter,
what goes around comes around.
Copy !req
886. I remember being just so pissed
that they did things this way.
Copy !req
887. I think Vince was in a panic mode, like,
Copy !req
888. "What can I do
to stop this rebellion right now?"
Copy !req
889. I felt like, in a strange sort of way,
because Bret and I had this relationship,
Copy !req
890. I felt like I sort of owed Bret something,
Copy !req
891. uh, because from his standpoint,
I'd double-crossed him.
Copy !req
892. Vince said, "He's gonna want to hit me,
and I owe him that."
Copy !req
893. I can picture him
walking in that locker room in Montreal.
Copy !req
894. Everybody else fired up,
everybody else emotional.
Copy !req
895. I leave the room, 'cause I don't
wanna watch Vince get punched.
Copy !req
896. Finally, Bret gets up,
walks across the room.
Copy !req
897. They all kind of meet.
Copy !req
898. I walk over to his locker room,
hands down,
Copy !req
899. and Bret hauls off and,
man, he hit me so hard.
Copy !req
900. Right in the temple.
Copy !req
901. There was no, like,
"Vince is gonna give me a shot."
Copy !req
902. I don't know where they get that story,
because that is such a bunch of bullshit.
Copy !req
903. It was Vince and me came at each other,
Copy !req
904. and we actually
tied up like a wrestling match.
Copy !req
905. Everybody's ready to pounce on me
as soon as we grab each other,
Copy !req
906. and I remember going,
"The only way I can get a shot in,
Copy !req
907. one shot, maybe, is an uppercut."
Copy !req
908. And I came right up between Vince's arms,
Copy !req
909. and it was like, um... You know when
you hit the bell and the thing goes up?
Copy !req
910. To this day,
I have no idea how the punch got through.
Copy !req
911. He was out cold like a starfish.
Copy !req
912. - Drilled him.
- I'm proud of you.
Copy !req
913. They're over there.
Copy !req
914. - As hard as I could. Knocked him out.
- I'm scared.
Copy !req
915. Probably the best thing I ever did,
and he deserved every bit.
Copy !req
916. Vince did get seriously hurt,
I mean...
Copy !req
917. Vince had, you know, a big, nice shiner.
Copy !req
918. That night, I'm limping around,
Copy !req
919. and, like, "Oh my God, stars are
all over the place in terms of my head."
Copy !req
920. Pretty good concussion.
Copy !req
921. I felt bad.
I felt bad for Bret. I felt bad for Vince.
Copy !req
922. Vince didn't wanna do that,
but he had to do what's best for business,
Copy !req
923. and that's what he's always gonna do.
Copy !req
924. That was the Montreal Screwjob,
as it was called,
Copy !req
925. and, to this day,
I don't regret any of it.
Copy !req
926. Things just got real, and it gave me
a whole different perspective
Copy !req
927. for the business.
Copy !req
928. The Montreal Screwjob
was like a moment in time
Copy !req
929. where you can see the shift.
Copy !req
930. You know, it's like a land mass moving.
Copy !req
931. You don't see it,
but then there's a big earthquake
Copy !req
932. and it moves, and you go, "Ooh, I saw it."
Copy !req
933. It, like, shifted,
and there was a... a seismic change.
Copy !req
934. The real-life event that happened,
Copy !req
935. the dispute with Bret
and the controversy afterwards,
Copy !req
936. led to the birth
of a Mr. McMahon character
Copy !req
937. that became
one of the most hated characters
Copy !req
938. and most beloved characters of all time.
Copy !req
939. In the midst of chaos,
a lot of times, genius comes out of it.
Copy !req
940. Is this the final nail, so to speak,
in World Wrestling Entertainment?
Copy !req
941. Au contraire. We're just getting started.
Copy !req
