1. Woo!
Copy !req
2. Every man for himself in there!
Copy !req
3. And the Hulkster at this moment
cleaning house on The Honky Tonk Man!
Copy !req
4. Look at him!
Copy !req
5. Professional wrestling.
It's always been popular,
Copy !req
6. but lately it's been emerging
from second-rate arenas
Copy !req
7. to attract a whole new generation of fans.
Copy !req
8. '84 and '85
was a very pivotal year in wrestling.
Copy !req
9. Things were changing rapidly.
Copy !req
10. WrestleMania I was very, very successful.
Copy !req
11. Vince was ahead of everyone when it came
to understanding how to market
Copy !req
12. and had the more modern product,
and he had the bigger stars.
Copy !req
13. This once-scorned pastime
has grown so trendy
Copy !req
14. that NBC will soon begin
a regular late-night television program
Copy !req
15. combining rock, comedy, and wrestling.
Copy !req
16. Saturday Night's Main Event
was on NBC late night
Copy !req
17. whenever Saturday Night Live
takes a break,
Copy !req
18. And had a big impact
on the perception of the business.
Copy !req
19. That was a real big deal
to be on network television.
Copy !req
20. My love, my life, wrestling,
is on network television.
Copy !req
21. - Look at that!
- My goodness!
Copy !req
22. Oh my God.
Copy !req
23. That was crazy.
Copy !req
24. Oh yeah!
Copy !req
25. Hogan scoops him up!
Copy !req
26. When you look
at pivotal moments in our industry,
Copy !req
27. Saturday Night's Main Event
was a huge coup.
Copy !req
28. So, WrestleMania is this huge success,
Copy !req
29. and they start doing more TV shows,
more live shows.
Copy !req
30. Now they're out there every night,
touring the country.
Copy !req
31. But you're doing all of this
on the backs of the wrestlers,
Copy !req
32. who have to work twice as hard
to make the business grow.
Copy !req
33. We wrestled seven days a week.
I don't know if people knew that.
Copy !req
34. We had no time off.
Copy !req
35. It was seven days a week,
52 weeks a year,
Copy !req
36. and so it was a pretty hard grind.
Copy !req
37. - No, he's not going to—
- Over the top rope!
Copy !req
38. I wish they'd given me, uh,
a few more days off a year.
Copy !req
39. They could have been better
at managing the schedule,
Copy !req
40. especially in the late '80s,
when it was just a disaster.
Copy !req
41. do the video package.
Copy !req
42. The schedule now,
I don't think it's that bad.
Copy !req
43. They're on guaranteed contracts,
Copy !req
44. so they're not under the same pressure
to perform while hurt.
Copy !req
45. In the '80s,
if you were hurt and didn't wrestle,
Copy !req
46. you were not paid.
Copy !req
47. Because of that,
you wrestled hurt all the time,
Copy !req
48. and the injuries got worse and worse
and worse, and you used painkillers.
Copy !req
49. It was brutal.
Copy !req
50. But at that time, it was about capturing
the most amount of money,
Copy !req
51. and that is how they did it.
Copy !req
52. Wrestlers, as a group,
were often exploited.
Copy !req
53. These wrestlers were not unionized.
Copy !req
54. They didn't have medical protection.
Copy !req
55. There was definitely a need
for a union in wrestling.
Copy !req
56. That's what Jesse Ventura
was trying to do.
Copy !req
57. Please welcome Jesse "The Body" Ventura.
Copy !req
58. Right before WrestleMania 2,
Copy !req
59. Jesse was trying to start a union
and undermine Vince.
Copy !req
60. I'm here to make sure
that Vince McMahon tells it like it is...
Copy !req
61. I was
on Vince McMahon's team all the way,
Copy !req
62. so I went straight to Vince,
said, "Jesse's stirring shit up, man."
Copy !req
63. "You know,
he's trying to start a union here,
Copy !req
64. and you're gonna have bunch of wrestlers
walk out on you at Madison Square Garden."
Copy !req
65. "Just letting you know what's up."
Copy !req
66. Hulk Hogan double-crossed Jesse
Copy !req
67. and ratted on all the guys
that were trying to get a union going.
Copy !req
68. Hulk Hogan stooged him out.
Copy !req
69. Hogan ratted him out.
Copy !req
70. The whole thing was a sham,
Copy !req
71. something, uh, he pulled out of the air,
Copy !req
72. mostly like, I don't know,
"We should get together."
Copy !req
73. And quite frankly,
no one in the locker room
Copy !req
74. would ever get behind Jesse.
Copy !req
75. So what Vince would do,
he called each wrestler, one by one.
Copy !req
76. He's like, "I know about the meeting."
Copy !req
77. "Everybody that shows up for this
will not have a job in the morning."
Copy !req
78. So nobody showed up.
Copy !req
79. It was almost always acknowledged
that these guys will never go for it.
Copy !req
80. These guys will never stick together.
And the wrestlers would tell me that too.
Copy !req
81. "We say 'boycott WrestleMania'
all together,
Copy !req
82. and half the guys are gonna
go back and do it and undercut us."
Copy !req
83. Unionizing never happened.
Copy !req
84. And I think it's less likely to happen now
than it was right before WrestleMania 2.
Copy !req
85. WrestleMania 2.
Copy !req
86. What the world has come to.
Copy !req
87. WrestleMania I was such
a success, so what do you do to top this?
Copy !req
88. Oh. I know.
Copy !req
89. We'll have an event from New York,
Copy !req
90. we'll have one from Chicago,
and we're gonna have one from LA.
Copy !req
91. Three shows in one day?
Copy !req
92. Okay. It's kind of impressive.
Copy !req
93. WrestleMania 2 and the three cities,
that was a disaster.
Copy !req
94. To try to send a signal
from three different cities?
Copy !req
95. It felt like we weren't in control.
Vince could not be in all three places.
Copy !req
96. Beg your pardon?
We have technical problems.
Copy !req
97. I just remember after that, Vince goes,
"We'll never do that again!" You know?
Copy !req
98. WrestleMania 2
was a success in that it made money
Copy !req
99. and that it wasn't a total catastrophe.
Copy !req
100. Beautiful...
Copy !req
101. But even if it was
a commercial success,
Copy !req
102. it wasn't a spectacle
on the level of WrestleMania I.
Copy !req
103. So WrestleMania III, then,
was like. "Hmm."
Copy !req
104. "What am I gonna do?"
Copy !req
105. I knew there was a very large stadium
in Pontiac, Michigan.
Copy !req
106. It seats 93,000 people
or something like that.
Copy !req
107. It was almost like,
"Wow, could you really do that?"
Copy !req
108. I thought,
"With the right attraction we could."
Copy !req
109. That involved Andre the Giant.
Copy !req
110. Andre the Giant,
ladies and gentlemen,
Copy !req
111. is the only undefeated superstar
in professional wrestling.
Copy !req
112. Hogan versus Andre.
Copy !req
113. Another headbutt,
and Hogan is in trouble.
Copy !req
114. Even though they had met
many times in the past,
Copy !req
115. in order to sell tickets,
we would sell it as if they had never met.
Copy !req
116. But I had to convince Andre
to come back to the business.
Copy !req
117. At the time,
Andre's health was failing him.
Copy !req
118. He needed crazy back surgery, as I recall.
Copy !req
119. Andre did a film in the UK...
Copy !req
120. Were you burned by acid?
Copy !req
121. and was gonna cash his chips in.
Copy !req
122. "Done as much as I can in the business.
I'm hurting. I can't move. I'm in pain."
Copy !req
123. So I went over in the middle of that film,
said, "Andre, here's what I want to do."
Copy !req
124. "I want you to get the operation
that you refuse to get,
Copy !req
125. and I want you to come back
Copy !req
126. and draw the largest crowd
that's ever been drawn."
Copy !req
127. "How many seats, boss?"93,000."
Copy !req
128. He laughs.
Copy !req
129. I said, "No, Andre, I'm serious."
Copy !req
130. "You versus Hogan with the way
we can present this, you as the heel."
Copy !req
131. Because he'd never been a heel, a bad guy.
Copy !req
132. He was always a babyface.
Copy !req
133. So he thought about it, and...
"Okay. I'll get the operation."
Copy !req
134. I'm here for one reason.
Copy !req
135. To challenge you
for a world championship match
Copy !req
136. in the WrestleMania.
Copy !req
137. Are you or are you not
gonna fight him in WrestleMania III?
Copy !req
138. Yes or no?
Copy !req
139. Yeah!
Copy !req
140. It was such a huge promotion.
Copy !req
141. They're talking about it
all over the world.
Copy !req
142. Heavyweight champion Hulk Hogan
to defend his crown
Copy !req
143. against challenger Andre the Giant.
Copy !req
144. So great is the lure
that WrestleMania III
Copy !req
145. will draw the largest audience
Copy !req
146. ever to witness an indoor sporting
or entertainment event
Copy !req
147. in the history of the world.
Copy !req
148. We sold 93,000 seats.
Copy !req
149. We're expecting fans from
France, Germany, Africa, South America,
Copy !req
150. the Orient, all over the world.
Copy !req
151. Ladies and gentlemen,
welcome to the magnificent Silverdome...
Copy !req
152. and welcome to WrestleMania III!
Copy !req
153. And now, the Queen of Soul,
Copy !req
154. Ms. Aretha Franklin!
Copy !req
155. Take a look, Jesse, it's unreal.
Copy !req
156. History will be made here this afternoon
at the Pontiac Silverdome.
Copy !req
157. Little Beaver just gave Bundy
a shot in the boiler.
Copy !req
158. Rowdy Roddy with a sleeper.
Copy !req
159. From behind with a cane!
Copy !req
160. - Bombs away!
- He got him!
Copy !req
161. Oh! He broke his guitar!
Copy !req
162. And Alice Cooper is inside.
Copy !req
163. He keeps holding pythons!
Copy !req
164. The Stars and Stripes
pinned on the end of that equalizer.
Copy !req
165. There were
a lot of great attractions
Copy !req
166. underneath this huge main event,
Copy !req
167. but it was Hogan and Andre
that drew that house.
Copy !req
168. Sooner or later, you gotta live and die,
and you gotta face the truth.
Copy !req
169. And for you, Andre the Giant,
it's time to face the truth, brother.
Copy !req
170. Hulk Hogan has never met a man
bigger than him, stronger than him,
Copy !req
171. and with a burning will inside,
more than Andre the Giant.
Copy !req
172. Andre never told Hogan
Copy !req
173. whether or not
he would allow Hogan to win the match.
Copy !req
174. And Hulk kept coming to me,
"Did you talk to Andre?"
Copy !req
175. I said, "I did."Well, what did he say?"
Copy !req
176. I said,
"There's not gonna be any problem."
Copy !req
177. You couldn't force him to do anything.
Come on. He's a giant.
Copy !req
178. I sat
in the locker room with Andre.
Copy !req
179. I would say, "Hey, boss, any idea what
we're doing out there?"Don't worry."
Copy !req
180. Finally got a hold of Vince,
I said, "What's gonna happen?"
Copy !req
181. "What am I doing out there?
Am I winning or losing?"
Copy !req
182. He goes, "Andre will do the right thing.
Don't worry." What does that mean?
Copy !req
183. This is
the main event of the evening.
Copy !req
184. He weighs 520 pounds.
Copy !req
185. Andre the Giant!
Copy !req
186. And now, his opponent, Hulk Hogan!
Copy !req
187. When I walked out
to the Silverdome,
Copy !req
188. I just couldn't believe how full it was.
Copy !req
189. I said, "This is either gonna be
the easiest thing I've ever done,
Copy !req
190. or this is gonna be a total disaster.
There's no in between."
Copy !req
191. This is the biggest match
in the history of professional wrestling.
Copy !req
192. The irresistible force
meeting the immovable object.
Copy !req
193. Look at the size of the giant!
Copy !req
194. Up!
Copy !req
195. We had this giant, and we had
this individual with so much charisma,
Copy !req
196. who was almost a superhero.
Copy !req
197. And the two of them colliding,
it was awesome.
Copy !req
198. During the match, it was the first time
I realized how bad his back really was.
Copy !req
199. I told him in the ring,
"Boss, stay close to the ropes,"
Copy !req
200. because I knew
he couldn't get back up on his own.
Copy !req
201. But we got through the match,
and then out of nowhere, he goes, "Slam!"
Copy !req
202. And I went, "What?"
And when I said, "What?" he came at me.
Copy !req
203. After I slammed him,
I dropped the leg and covered him.
Copy !req
204. I didn't know if this was gonna be
a one-two kickout.
Copy !req
205. I had no idea
if I was gonna win or lose the match.
Copy !req
206. Until when?
Copy !req
207. Until Andre didn't kick out.
Copy !req
208. It's over! It's over!
Copy !req
209. Unbelievable! I never thought
it could be done, Gorilla Monsoon.
Copy !req
210. That moment in time,
it's just something very, very special.
Copy !req
211. World Wrestling Entertainment
heavyweight champion, Hulk Hogan!
Copy !req
212. Listen to the emotion!
Copy !req
213. That's probably
the greatest attraction we've ever had.
Copy !req
214. That's something
I'm very, very proud of today.
Copy !req
215. WrestleMania III is a key part
of the WWE and Vince McMahon mythology
Copy !req
216. and story of wrestling,
Copy !req
217. that Andre the Giant
passed the torch to Hogan.
Copy !req
218. The reality is Hogan was a bigger star
than Andre before that match happened.
Copy !req
219. Hulk Hogan,
electrifying this capacity crowd!
Copy !req
220. " Andre had never lost."
Copy !req
221. The first time in 15 years
Andre the Giant had ever been defeated.
Copy !req
222. Nah, Andre lost.
Copy !req
223. - Andre is out!
- He's out! I can't believe it!
Copy !req
224. "Andre had never been slammed."
Copy !req
225. Been slammed probably
25 times before that. Maybe more.
Copy !req
226. Oh! Look at that!
Copy !req
227. They've said 93,000 for so many years,
they probably believe it.
Copy !req
228. 93,000 people.
Copy !req
229. 93,173 people.
Copy !req
230. We held the record
for 93,000 in that building.
Copy !req
231. Yeah, it was actually
78,000 in the building.
Copy !req
232. I don't know why
this is one of the greatest controversies
Copy !req
233. in pro wrestling history.
Copy !req
234. I think the truth is probably
somewhere in the middle,
Copy !req
235. and I'm not sure that it matters at all.
Copy !req
236. Nothing that any wrestler,
Copy !req
237. that anybody involved in wrestling
tells you, should be regarded as fact.
Copy !req
238. But regardless
of the real attendance figure,
Copy !req
239. WrestleMania III was an enormous success.
Copy !req
240. History is made here
in the Silverdome, Pontiac, Michigan,
Copy !req
241. and that guy right there
has made history all over the world.
Copy !req
242. A victory for Hogan at that time
Copy !req
243. would build him greater as an entertainer
Copy !req
244. and an athlete
and representation of our brand,
Copy !req
245. but of course,
the brand comes up that way too.
Copy !req
246. WrestleMania III changed the business,
and it launched me into superstar stratus.
Copy !req
247. He is the most famous
Copy !req
248. and successful professional wrestler
the world has ever seen.
Copy !req
249. His name alone can generate
millions of dollars of revenue,
Copy !req
250. and when he performs at indoor arenas,
Copy !req
251. he has attracted bigger crowds
than the Rolling Stones and even the Pope.
Copy !req
252. When Hulkamania was running wild,
Copy !req
253. he gotta be
the most popular person in the world.
Copy !req
254. You book Hogan on the card,
the building sold out. That was it.
Copy !req
255. He was a figure
of national fame.
Copy !req
256. You didn't even really have to be
someone who regularly watched wrestling.
Copy !req
257. Hulk Hogan had broken through.
Copy !req
258. At that time, Hulk Hogan—
Copy !req
259. That's all anybody talked about
was Hulk Hogan,
Copy !req
260. so I do remember feeling
a little bit of resentment as a kid,
Copy !req
261. because my dad never got the credit
Copy !req
262. that he deserved for creating all of this.
Copy !req
263. After...
Copy !req
264. Every word that came out
of Hogan's mouth was Vince talking.
Copy !req
265. Better stock 'em
on your shelves.
Copy !req
266. Make sure you've got plenty of 'em
right on your shelves.
Copy !req
267. Hogan and Vince were like one person.
Vince came up with the idea, Hogan did it.
Copy !req
268. Every single thing was Vince.
Copy !req
269. When he would tell me stuff,
I'd be, "Eh, I don't know, man,"
Copy !req
270. but I'd do it anyway,
Copy !req
271. because everything he did turned to gold.
Copy !req
272. With wrestling superstars...
Copy !req
273. It's like having a real match
right in your own home.
Copy !req
274. This huge swell of fans
and what have you
Copy !req
275. that we now had, middle-class America,
Copy !req
276. it's like, "Let's bring this together
and let's sell it."
Copy !req
277. You can start by getting in shape
with a Hulkamania workout set.
Copy !req
278. 1-900-454-HULK.
Copy !req
279. Yay!
Copy !req
280. One of the most
remarkable success stories
Copy !req
281. has been written by the WWE,
Copy !req
282. as marketing merchandise
grossed over 200 million last year alone.
Copy !req
283. I'm Vince McMahon...
Copy !req
284. The man behind the magic,
the man behind the mic
Copy !req
285. is Vince McMahon, Jr.
Copy !req
286. Vince never stopped.
Copy !req
287. He didn't complain
about the hours he worked.
Copy !req
288. He's a workaholic.
Copy !req
289. As Hogan was out
doing the shows and drawing the money,
Copy !req
290. Vince was out setting up other stuff.
Copy !req
291. At that time,
because of the success that we had,
Copy !req
292. Hogan wanted to be part of Hollywood.
Copy !req
293. And I'm going, "Kill myself.
I'm gonna lose Hogan to Hollywood now."
Copy !req
294. And I said, "Terry, you're going
to do a film, I'll do one with you."
Copy !req
295. I knew nothing about filmmaking.
Copy !req
296. So Terry and I decided,
"Well, all right, we'll go write a movie."
Copy !req
297. It was basically Vince and I spending two,
two and a half days, in a hotel room
Copy !req
298. writing the whole script.
Copy !req
299. Didn't know what the hell we were doing.
We were just having fun.
Copy !req
300. The movie! The Hulkster
as you've never seen before!
Copy !req
301. No Holds Barred!
Copy !req
302. It's not the world's worst movie...
Copy !req
303. but uh, it wasn't great.
Copy !req
304. What's that smell?
Copy !req
305. Dookie.
Copy !req
306. It was pretty hokey.
Copy !req
307. Dookie?
Copy !req
308. I thought, "I'll do this great movie,
and everyone's gonna wanna see it."
Copy !req
309. Not exactly the way it worked out.
Copy !req
310. It didn't prevent Hogan
from then going to Hollywood,
Copy !req
311. but it delayed it for a while.
Copy !req
312. When did you notice
Hulkamania was starting to fade?
Copy !req
313. You know, I go back,
and I look at WrestleMania VI.
Copy !req
314. The Hulkster
putting his title on the line
Copy !req
315. against the Ultimate Warrior...
Copy !req
316. At that time, for Hogan, his star
may have been fading a little bit.
Copy !req
317. Do you want to live forever?
Copy !req
318. You can't stay on top
every day, every year.
Copy !req
319. It was probably time for Hogan
to be on the bench for a while.
Copy !req
320. Hulk's getting older,
and you need something new.
Copy !req
321. The Ultimate Warrior!
Copy !req
322. And Warrior
had a groundswell of popularity.
Copy !req
323. Listen to the ovation, Jess,
for the Ultimate Warrior!
Copy !req
324. The Ultimate Warrior
was built better than me,
Copy !req
325. and his colors were brighter than me.
Copy !req
326. The only problem he had
was he wasn't in love with this business.
Copy !req
327. It was a situation, behind that
shiny object, there wasn't much go.
Copy !req
328. But I did what Andre did for me.
I passed the torch to him.
Copy !req
329. He's impervious to those moves!
Copy !req
330. Unbelievable!
Hogan has never had anyone do that!
Copy !req
331. Look out! The big splash win!
Copy !req
332. Two! And out! He got him!
Copy !req
333. Warrior became the champion
and was very popular with the audience.
Copy !req
334. As popular as Hulk? No.
Copy !req
335. As time went on, Warrior wasn't
all that we had hoped he would be,
Copy !req
336. and he was not a popular person backstage,
Copy !req
337. so immediately you look at,
"Oh my God, we need to move back to Hulk."
Copy !req
338. We had this storyline, uh,
in which Sergeant Slaughter,
Copy !req
339. who was a big, huge fan favorite...
Copy !req
340. Sergeant Slaughter
Copy !req
341. he was
a Marine Corps drill sergeant
Copy !req
342. and a great American,
Copy !req
343. so he, as a babyface, a good guy
in the parlance of our business,
Copy !req
344. was turning into a bad guy.
Copy !req
345. And, like any good organization,
you're always like,
Copy !req
346. "What can I take from pop culture?
What's happening out in the world,
Copy !req
347. and how can we present it
in a different fashion?"
Copy !req
348. So, there was a lot of heat,
as we call it, with Iraq and USA.
Copy !req
349. Troops and civilians
on edge in the Middle East.
Copy !req
350. So, okay, good.
Then we can capitalize on that.
Copy !req
351. Atten-hut!
Copy !req
352. My guest this week,
ladies and gentlemen,
Copy !req
353. is the former United States military man,
Sergeant Slaughter.
Copy !req
354. Yeah, Sergeant "DD."
Dishonorable Discharge.
Copy !req
355. Sergeant Slaughter
sort of was drafted
Copy !req
356. into the Iraqi culture, so to speak,
Copy !req
357. and now he wanted to represent Iraq.
Copy !req
358. I will take the flag
Copy !req
359. of the brave Iraqi country
Copy !req
360. and raise it high in the air!
Copy !req
361. We had this big storyline going
with Hogan versus Sergeant Slaughter,
Copy !req
362. USA versus Iraq, and it was working.
Copy !req
363. It was working really well.
Copy !req
364. And then all of a sudden,
from a reality standpoint...
Copy !req
365. ta-ta-ta-dum.
Copy !req
366. Iraq invades Kuwait. We have Desert Storm.
Copy !req
367. As I report to you,
Copy !req
368. air attacks are underway
against military targets in Iraq.
Copy !req
369. Having Sarge
as an Iraqi sympathizer,
Copy !req
370. it was way too fresh,
way too new and in the now.
Copy !req
371. It was like, "Wait a minute.
I've got a relative over there,
Copy !req
372. or a niece, or something like that,
that's serving our country."
Copy !req
373. The audience didn't want to see it.
Copy !req
374. We got to the point where
Copy !req
375. Sergeant Slaughter
was getting death threats at home,
Copy !req
376. they wanted to kill his wife and his kids,
Copy !req
377. so as far as telling a wrestling story,
it worked awesome.
Copy !req
378. I just thought that,
"Phew, boy, this was a risky move here."
Copy !req
379. Americans could die in this thing,
Copy !req
380. so change it up,
back off with the story line a little bit,
Copy !req
381. but still have the match.
Copy !req
382. Once again,
the largest pay-per-view audience
Copy !req
383. in the history of pay-per-view.
Copy !req
384. Aw, no! Give me a break here!
Copy !req
385. It's not over yet!
Copy !req
386. Hulkster tearing it to pieces!
Copy !req
387. You're not gonna do that
to the United States of America.
Copy !req
388. It's over!
Copy !req
389. He got him! He got him!
Copy !req
390. At the end of the day,
the great American won.
Copy !req
391. He did it for
World Wrestling Entertainment
Copy !req
392. and for the United States of America!
Copy !req
393. The wrestling of the early to mid-'80s,
I liked it a lot.
Copy !req
394. I was very amused by it.
Copy !req
395. But it took a nastier turn
somewhere down the line,
Copy !req
396. and at some point,
it ceased to be something
Copy !req
397. that I was comfortable
being involved with.
Copy !req
398. You learn from everything,
Copy !req
399. and since you have no control
over world events,
Copy !req
400. you have to be very careful
associating yourself with events
Copy !req
401. in the real world.
Copy !req
402. Anything can happen, so don't go there.
Copy !req
403. So we move back to Hulk,
and there wasn't, "Thank God Hulk's back."
Copy !req
404. The audience was tired of Hulk,
Copy !req
405. at least Hulk in that role
of being the All-American, being the hero.
Copy !req
406. They were sick of him.
Copy !req
407. And on top of that,
Copy !req
408. there started being
the whispers of the Dr. Zahorian trial
Copy !req
409. and whispers of all this other stuff.
Copy !req
410. In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania next Monday,
Copy !req
411. a doctor will go on trial
charged with prescribing anabolic steroids
Copy !req
412. to several professional wrestlers.
Copy !req
413. Dr. George Zahorian
has been indicted by a federal grand jury
Copy !req
414. on 15 counts
of distributing muscle-building steroids.
Copy !req
415. To my right, Dr. George Zahorian.
Thank you for joining us this week...
Copy !req
416. Dr. George Zahorian
was appointed
Copy !req
417. by the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Commission
Copy !req
418. as the doctor of note for WWE.
Copy !req
419. We had nothing to do
with who was appointed.
Copy !req
420. His role was
to make sure that all the laws
Copy !req
421. of the state athletic commission
were followed.
Copy !req
422. He would be in our locker rooms
and things of that nature,
Copy !req
423. and he began
to sell steroids to our talent.
Copy !req
424. At that time,
steroids were part of the culture
Copy !req
425. because all the stars during
that time period had the perfect bodies,
Copy !req
426. and so it was the norm.
Copy !req
427. You know? Like people
go to Starbucks before work,
Copy !req
428. people took steroids
because they were wrestlers or actors
Copy !req
429. or baseball players
or hockey players or football players.
Copy !req
430. It was an era where steroid use
in sports ran amok.
Copy !req
431. If you just looked
at the wrestlers themselves,
Copy !req
432. they went from, you know, a burly guy
who could plausibly be introduced
Copy !req
433. as having come off
his grandpa's farm in Iowa,
Copy !req
434. built his muscles
from hoisting bales of hay,
Copy !req
435. to these guys who were like cyborgs.
Copy !req
436. The WWE reeked of steroids.
Copy !req
437. It's obvious.
Copy !req
438. Now you tell me
he ain't ripped.
Copy !req
439. Dr. George Zahorian would come,
and he would have steroids and painkillers
Copy !req
440. and sleeping pills and different things
Copy !req
441. that he would then prescribe
and sell to the talent.
Copy !req
442. He would check you for your match.
Blood pressure, pulse rate, and all that.
Copy !req
443. And it's like,
"I need a few other things,"
Copy !req
444. and then you'd negotiate
for your steroids and your pills.
Copy !req
445. It wasn't illegal
to buy steroids from a physician.
Copy !req
446. I bought some from him.
Copy !req
447. But it was illegal
to prescribe them just to sell them.
Copy !req
448. Steroids, early on,
they were legal.
Copy !req
449. However, when they became illegal,
that's when it became an issue.
Copy !req
450. Following Reagan's era
of the war on drugs...
Copy !req
451. Just say no.
Copy !req
452. the laws started changing,
Copy !req
453. and at some point,
Copy !req
454. steroids were categorized
as a Class III substance.
Copy !req
455. The feeling was that
doctors were prescribing them
Copy !req
456. not for the purpose
that they were intended for.
Copy !req
457. So George Zahorian was arrested
by the federal government.
Copy !req
458. The government came down hard on him
and sent him to jail.
Copy !req
459. It's hard to believe
what's occurred today.
Copy !req
460. All of the media hoopla
behind the steroid trial
Copy !req
461. definitely came
at a really bad time for Vince.
Copy !req
462. We had just started the WBF,
the World Bodybuilding Federation.
Copy !req
463. Here comes
the World Bodybuilding Federation.
Copy !req
464. I've always enjoyed
bodybuilding and physiques,
Copy !req
465. so I thought maybe
I could get these bodybuilders
Copy !req
466. to perform various routines
Copy !req
467. and add a lot
of entertainment value to it.
Copy !req
468. Turned out not a good time to do that,
Copy !req
469. because bodybuilders,
all they do is take steroids.
Copy !req
470. So, the writing's on the wall.
This is not gonna work.
Copy !req
471. I decided, "Well, let's fold this."
Copy !req
472. At that time, there was a lot of heat,
Copy !req
473. and I felt like,
boy, I'm getting hit from all sides.
Copy !req
474. Most of us think of professional wrestling
as harmless entertainment
Copy !req
475. and Hulk Hogan as the King of the Ring.
Copy !req
476. But was there a sinister side
to his success?
Copy !req
477. Dr. Zahorian testified
he had treated Hulk Hogan
Copy !req
478. for a serious steroid abuse problem.
Copy !req
479. After the Zahorian trial, Vince ended up
being pressured by the media
Copy !req
480. to start steroid testing.
Copy !req
481. When you see this symbol,
Copy !req
482. you can be assured
of drug-free sports entertainment
Copy !req
483. that you and your entire family
can be proud of.
Copy !req
484. I held a press conference and said,
"Hey, look, I took steroids."
Copy !req
485. "Not anymore."
Copy !req
486. "We're gonna establish
protocols and procedures
Copy !req
487. to make certain
that none of our performers do either."
Copy !req
488. World Wrestling Entertainment
will be the standard-bearer
Copy !req
489. for drug-free sports and entertainment.
Copy !req
490. The same day,
Hulk Hogan went on The Arsenio Hall Show.
Copy !req
491. Your name came up recently
when a doctor got himself into trouble.
Copy !req
492. - Have you heard about this?
- Yeah, I've heard about it.
Copy !req
493. I remember talking with Vince
about going on Arsenio Hall.
Copy !req
494. He thought it was a bad idea.
Copy !req
495. My suggestion to him is to come clean.
Copy !req
496. That's not what happened.
Copy !req
497. I'm not a steroid abuser,
and I do not use steroids.
Copy !req
498. It was like, "Oh God, please. You know.
Just tell the truth. It's so much easier."
Copy !req
499. Hulk Hogan
went on The Arsenio Hall Show
Copy !req
500. and told everybody
that he only took steroids three times.
Copy !req
501. He lied like a dog.
Copy !req
502. I myself injected him personally.
Copy !req
503. I injected Hogan with steroids many times.
Copy !req
504. I self-destructed my own self, you know.
Copy !req
505. That was one of the worst decisions
I ever made was not listening to Vince.
Copy !req
506. When you do stuff like that,
uh, and don't tell the truth,
Copy !req
507. then it's an open door
for people to come get you,
Copy !req
508. and, unfortunately, we were
caught in the crosshairs of that as well.
Copy !req
509. I was never assigned to cover wrestling,
Copy !req
510. but pro wrestling was so highly rated
on TV it was hard to ignore,
Copy !req
511. and I slowly began
to feed it into my column.
Copy !req
512. There was a newspaper columnist,
Phil Mushnick, with The New York Post.
Copy !req
513. Try to be nice here,
but there's nothing nice to say about him.
Copy !req
514. He seemed to be
on a vendetta against the company
Copy !req
515. and Vince in particular.
Copy !req
516. Phil Mushnick was digging
for anything he could.
Copy !req
517. I don't know why he has a vendetta,
still does, against our company,
Copy !req
518. against our form of entertainment.
Copy !req
519. Against me. I don't know why.
Copy !req
520. 'Cause he's a dirtbag.
Copy !req
521. What Vince had
by running wrestling
Copy !req
522. is that it's wrestling.
Copy !req
523. So the real reporters, for the most part,
Copy !req
524. "It's wrestling. We don't wanna
waste our time covering it."
Copy !req
525. And Phil Mushnick
was the one guy to cover it,
Copy !req
526. and he wrote very strongly against Vince.
Stronger than I would write.
Copy !req
527. Back then, no one had seen
anything written critical of pro wrestling
Copy !req
528. in mainstream media.
Copy !req
529. And when I first wrote this stuff,
my mailbox was stuffed with messages,
Copy !req
530. and they essentially all read the same.
Copy !req
531. "You don't know the half of it."
Copy !req
532. "You don't know
how truly bad it is within the ring
Copy !req
533. and within the locker rooms."
Copy !req
534. And I returned some calls,
and it was mind-blowing.
Copy !req
535. You know,
as wrestling becomes more popular,
Copy !req
536. naturally,
people are interested in the stories
Copy !req
537. of what's going on behind the scenes.
Copy !req
538. And pulling back the curtain
in the pro wrestling world
Copy !req
539. can be pretty shocking.
Copy !req
540. You know, the stories of depravity,
of sex, of violence, of drug use...
Copy !req
541. We would have been looked upon,
in today's society,
Copy !req
542. as some of the worst human beings
walking the face of the Earth.
Copy !req
543. I mean, we abused the hell out of women.
Copy !req
544. All of us did.
Copy !req
545. You know, they was like a toy for us.
Copy !req
546. You don't have to do a lot of research
to understand
Copy !req
547. that being a woman in or around
Copy !req
548. the pro wrestling world
at this point in history
Copy !req
549. was not necessarily a safe place to be.
Copy !req
550. I hear some horrible stuff
about women in wrestling.
Copy !req
551. Horrible.
Copy !req
552. With us now, ladies and gentlemen,
"Superfly" Jimmy Snuka.
Copy !req
553. For example,
the Jimmy Snuka thing.
Copy !req
554. When that girl got killed.
Copy !req
555. In 1983, Jimmy Snuka...
Copy !req
556. was the most popular wrestler
in the company at the time.
Copy !req
557. Something happened in a hotel room
in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Copy !req
558. His girlfriend hit her head and died.
Copy !req
559. The forensic pathologist who investigated
thought it was a homicide,
Copy !req
560. but, at the time,
no charges were ever filed.
Copy !req
561. "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka.
Copy !req
562. Was the power of Vince involved in that?
Copy !req
563. I think that Vince had a hand
in making it go away.
Copy !req
564. I mean, exactly what, I don't know.
Copy !req
565. And hell, brother, is gonna be hot.
Copy !req
566. Hot, brother.
Copy !req
567. No doubt.
Copy !req
568. At this point, most fans didn't know about
these darker stories about pro wrestling.
Copy !req
569. Phil Mushnick was one of the first people
Copy !req
570. to really bring this out
into the public's face.
Copy !req
571. Phil Mushnick
was vigilant against Vince.
Copy !req
572. He had told me once, and he said,
Copy !req
573. "I've got a story. The day I write it,
they may have to close the doors."
Copy !req
574. A battle royale in professional wrestling
over new allegations of sexual harassment
Copy !req
575. by top officials in the sport.
Copy !req
576. This growing scandal
could put wrestling down for the count.
Copy !req
577. There was so much going on at the time,
Copy !req
578. and one accusation
is that someone from our organization
Copy !req
579. was coming on to someone on the ring crew.
Copy !req
580. The ring boy scandal began
with a fellow named Mel Phillips,
Copy !req
581. who was what they called a ring boss.
Copy !req
582. He would bring with him ring boys.
Copy !req
583. In too many cases,
Copy !req
584. these ring boys were underage,
and they were being sexually abused.
Copy !req
585. Former ring boy Tom Cole
Copy !req
586. says that top WWE executives
sexually harassed and abused ring boys,
Copy !req
587. the teenagers hired to put up
and take down rings at matches.
Copy !req
588. Mel Phillips was a total pedophile
that preyed on young boys,
Copy !req
589. and if these young boys weren't complying
with their requests for sexual favors,
Copy !req
590. they weren't hired.
Copy !req
591. And then I learned
there were others involved.
Copy !req
592. Terry Garvin, an executive in Connecticut,
Copy !req
593. and Pat Patterson,
one of McMahon's top executives.
Copy !req
594. Here at ringside, Vince McMahon
along with wrestling great Pat Patterson...
Copy !req
595. In a business
that was very homophobic,
Copy !req
596. Pat was gay, and openly gay.
Copy !req
597. But Pat prospered
and became a top guy everywhere he went.
Copy !req
598. I was grabbed on numerous occasions
on my testicles, on my buttocks
Copy !req
599. by Pat Patterson
of World Wrestling Entertainment,
Copy !req
600. and Terry Garvin propositioned me
when I was 16,
Copy !req
601. offered me cocaine and all kinds of drugs
to have sex with him.
Copy !req
602. When I refused, I was let go
from the company when I was 16.
Copy !req
603. I think, uh, Vince is guilty of aiding
and abetting the ring boy scandal.
Copy !req
604. At best, he's guilty of rank neglect.
Copy !req
605. Phil Mushnick
was trying to build this whole case
Copy !req
606. of how rotten the company was.
Copy !req
607. He didn't care how he did it.
Copy !req
608. He didn't care whether
he hurt the people that were involved
Copy !req
609. on one side or the other.
Copy !req
610. He just wanted to write
this salacious piece about WWE.
Copy !req
611. It was a pedophile ring!
Copy !req
612. Three of these guys were all in on it.
Copy !req
613. These were real kids
being sexually abused on McMahon's watch.
Copy !req
614. I do think
there was a lot of turning a blind eye
Copy !req
615. to some of the things that were
going on, but I don't think anybody...
Copy !req
616. could ever prove anything.
It was like, how do you prove it?
Copy !req
617. And eventually
Vince settled with Tom Cole.
Copy !req
618. Mel Phillips and Terry Garvin,
Copy !req
619. they were let go
and never worked there again.
Copy !req
620. Pat Patterson resigned,
Copy !req
621. but during that period,
Vince and I talked.
Copy !req
622. He goes, "One of the three was innocent."
Copy !req
623. And I go, "Who?"
And he goes, "Pat Patterson."
Copy !req
624. And I go,
"Why is he gone if he's innocent?"
Copy !req
625. He goes, "You don't understand
running this business."
Copy !req
626. "It's a gay witch hunt, and he had to go."
Copy !req
627. Most people in wrestling that were around
Copy !req
628. believe that Patterson
never acted unprofessionally,
Copy !req
629. and, uh, months later, Patterson was back.
Copy !req
630. In regards to the allegations
made against Pat,
Copy !req
631. nothing has ever been substantiated,
and I just don't believe them.
Copy !req
632. - Please, not me.
- He's doing home movies, Patrick.
Copy !req
633. None of it rings true. The others?
Copy !req
634. No comment.
Copy !req
635. We all knew
Pat was doing this stuff.
Copy !req
636. I didn't like Pat because he kept
grabbing my pecker in the locker room.
Copy !req
637. - He what?
- He would grab my pecker.
Copy !req
638. Yeah.
Copy !req
639. Did you guys complain?
Copy !req
640. To who? He's the booker.
Copy !req
641. He's the number two guy in the office.
To whom?
Copy !req
642. Vince.
Copy !req
643. You know nothing
about the wrestling business, don't ya?
Copy !req
644. There's nobody to go to, son.
Copy !req
645. You either take it, or you're going home.
Who are you going to complain to?
Copy !req
646. Vince.
Copy !req
647. For what? To get fired?
Copy !req
648. He needed Pat more than he needed me.
Copy !req
649. Pat was like the savant
of professional wrestling,
Copy !req
650. and he was Vince's right-hand man
when it came to booking
Copy !req
651. and was very,
very valuable in the company.
Copy !req
652. Did Vince protect Pat?
Copy !req
653. I wouldn't say he protected him.
Copy !req
654. I would say... he protected the business.
Copy !req
655. These allegations are absolutely absurd
that have been raised.
Copy !req
656. McMahon insists it's all just
a conspiracy to wreck his business.
Copy !req
657. It seems as though
they're all ganging up on us,
Copy !req
658. all at one time.
Copy !req
659. There's no sign
the charges have done any harm.
Copy !req
660. No, wrestling, or whatever this is,
has survived scandals before,
Copy !req
661. and there is no reason to believe
this one too won't be drowned out
Copy !req
662. by all those fans who couldn't care less.
Copy !req
663. What reaction there was
was meager from legitimate media.
Copy !req
664. Those who seemed to eat it up
were the scandal shows,
Copy !req
665. like the Phil Donahue kind of show.
Copy !req
666. Here you are being accused,
Mr. McMahon,
Copy !req
667. of presiding over an organization
that looked the other way
Copy !req
668. while sex harassment activity
was taking place.
Copy !req
669. I'm one of the few people
who enjoys confrontation.
Copy !req
670. If there is a situation like Donahue,
Copy !req
671. I have no problem confronting someone,
especially when they're lying.
Copy !req
672. You did a horrible job.
That's the only reason why you were fired.
Copy !req
673. Donahue was an opportunity
to stand up for himself.
Copy !req
674. I don't think
it went the way he wanted it to.
Copy !req
675. Sexual harassment
is running rampant...
Copy !req
676. Where were you all these years?
Copy !req
677. His father blackballed me.
Copy !req
678. I didn't sleep with your VP.
Two weeks later, I'm fired.
Copy !req
679. I don't know that that happened.
Copy !req
680. Whether it was a good decision
or a bad decision
Copy !req
681. at that time, at this time...
Copy !req
682. I did it.
Copy !req
683. I was sitting right next
to Vince. He was not comfortable.
Copy !req
684. At one point, he whispers to me,
"This is the longest hour of my life."
Copy !req
685. - It's not the truth.
- Okay.
Copy !req
686. - You lie about this to children!
- You're finished.
Copy !req
687. I don't buy it.
Copy !req
688. Got it. Well...
Copy !req
689. I think that this
was one point in his life
Copy !req
690. that everything
was kind of coming down at once.
Copy !req
691. There was a bit of frustration
in what he couldn't control.
Copy !req
692. Oh my gosh.
There was so many scandals going on
Copy !req
693. with who was dating who,
who was sleeping with whom.
Copy !req
694. Do you remember
any of those?
Copy !req
695. Well, you know...
Copy !req
696. You know what? I'm trying to be
really cautious on doing this.
Copy !req
697. I don't know
what they want out in the open or not.
Copy !req
698. I know there was some girl
that I think was a referee, girl referee,
Copy !req
699. that had claimed that
Vince had, uh, sexually assaulted her.
Copy !req
700. For the first time ever,
a lady referee.
Copy !req
701. I remember
Rita Marie the referee,
Copy !req
702. because there was only one female referee
in wrestling at that point in time,
Copy !req
703. and it was her.
Copy !req
704. Vince was definitely trying to push her
as the hot blonde woman ref
Copy !req
705. as a character in his soap opera.
Copy !req
706. Rita Marie,
ladies and gentlemen,
Copy !req
707. the very first ever lady referee
in World Wrestling Entertainment.
Copy !req
708. Hopefully, we'll be seeing more of her
in time to come.
Copy !req
709. When you're accused of this,
accused of that,
Copy !req
710. and there's this deluge of things,
"You're this, you're that,"
Copy !req
711. one of the things was an alleged rape,
uh, that never happened.
Copy !req
712. I was forced into oral sex
with Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
713. When I couldn't complete his desires,
Copy !req
714. he got really angry.
Copy !req
715. Started ripping off my jeans.
Copy !req
716. Pulled me on top of him
and told me, again,
Copy !req
717. if I wanted
a half-a-million-dollar-a-year contract,
Copy !req
718. I had to satisfy him.
Copy !req
719. And if I didn't satisfy him,
I was blackballed.
Copy !req
720. I was scared.
Copy !req
721. My wrist was all black and blue.
Copy !req
722. He just didn't stop.
Copy !req
723. Once you're accused of rape,
you're a rapist,
Copy !req
724. but it was consensual, and actually,
had it been a rape, um,
Copy !req
725. the statute of limitations had run out.
Copy !req
726. So it's all kind of crap like that
that people are digging up
Copy !req
727. and trying to find something on you.
Copy !req
728. Vince did sue her over it,
and he sued Geraldo Rivera,
Copy !req
729. but the general public, I think
they just thought that it was all sleazy.
Copy !req
730. People looked the other way.
Copy !req
731. God, I just hope somebody listens.
Copy !req
732. They just thought it was a woman
making up a story on a rich guy.
Copy !req
733. Rita, what do you expect to get now?
I mean, what do you want?
Copy !req
734. Did you just wanna come on Geraldo?
Copy !req
735. They were very, very negative on her.
Copy !req
736. It just
didn't resonate with a public
Copy !req
737. that it should have resonated with.
Copy !req
738. This was the biggest guy in cable TV.
Copy !req
739. Nobody wanted to look a little deeper.
Copy !req
740. They didn't wanna look.
They didn't wanna know.
Copy !req
741. Most newspapers
ran away from it or wouldn't touch it
Copy !req
742. because it's wrestling, it's beneath us,
but Phil was not, um, dissuaded by Vince.
Copy !req
743. He kept going and going.
Copy !req
744. And I do think that
the negative headlines and attention,
Copy !req
745. that did lead to the indictment,
it did lead to the trial.
Copy !req
746. The Justice Department
has indicted the most powerful man
Copy !req
747. in professional wrestling in this country.
Not a wrestler,
Copy !req
748. but the man who runs
World Wrestling Entertainment.
Copy !req
749. The charge,
illegal distribution of steroids.
Copy !req
750. Do you know what triggered
the federal government to look into you?
Copy !req
751. Well, I think Phil Mushnick,
uh, triggered all of this,
Copy !req
752. and whether he had any connections
to the federal government, I don't know.
Copy !req
753. But again,
that's where it seemed to, uh, to begin.
Copy !req
754. I was an FBI informant.
I admit to that. You know why?
Copy !req
755. The FBI would read what I wrote
and then act on it.
Copy !req
756. When the indictments came,
Copy !req
757. there were no indictments or anything
on the ring boy story
Copy !req
758. or Rita Chatterton.
Copy !req
759. There were steroid indictments.
Copy !req
760. The three-count indictment
charges that he conspired
Copy !req
761. to defraud the government
Copy !req
762. by possessing and distributing steroids
through Dr. George Zaharion.
Copy !req
763. - Morning, guys.
- Mr. McMahon.
Copy !req
764. It was not a good morning
Copy !req
765. for World Wrestling Entertainment
owner Vincent McMahon.
Copy !req
766. On this day, he was in federal court
Copy !req
767. entering a plea of not guilty
Copy !req
768. to charges that he bulked up
his wrestlers with steroids.
Copy !req
769. Prosecutors say McMahon,
who admits being a former steroids user,
Copy !req
770. is a corporate drug pusher.
Copy !req
771. McMahon's lawyers, on the other hand,
Copy !req
772. say the wrestling mogul
is the victim of a government witch hunt.
Copy !req
773. Sometimes life isn't fair,
Copy !req
774. and, unfortunately, for me,
I believe this is one of those instances.
Copy !req
775. The federal government
and the Justice Department
Copy !req
776. can be the biggest bullies.
Copy !req
777. They have unlimited resources.
Copy !req
778. The average person can't afford
to buck the government. They just can't.
Copy !req
779. So that's why so many people cop a plea.
Copy !req
780. They wanted me to cop a plea.
Copy !req
781. He would have
to plead guilty to some charge,
Copy !req
782. but he would pay a fine
and everything goes away.
Copy !req
783. I wouldn't do it.
I wasn't guilty of anything.
Copy !req
784. I said, "Fuck yourself."
Copy !req
785. If convicted,
McMahon could face up to 11 years in jail
Copy !req
786. and $500,000 in fines on each count.
Copy !req
787. Right before the trial,
Vince had neck surgery,
Copy !req
788. so he goes into the trial,
and he's wearing a neck brace.
Copy !req
789. My impression was
that it was not an operation
Copy !req
790. that he needed to do at that moment.
Copy !req
791. A lot of people thought,
"He's wearing this thing
Copy !req
792. because he's trying
to invoke some sort of sympathy,
Copy !req
793. you know, from the jury."
Copy !req
794. That was not the case.
Copy !req
795. It's impossible to not think
Copy !req
796. there was some sort
of storytelling contrivance behind it.
Copy !req
797. I mean, in pro wrestling,
bad guys would wear those neck braces
Copy !req
798. because they knew the crowd would boo them
for like, being overly dramatic.
Copy !req
799. It's not a facade. I'm— I'm not well.
Copy !req
800. With Vince, everything is a show,
Copy !req
801. even in the midst
of this very serious trial.
Copy !req
802. I mean, there's a lot at stake here.
Copy !req
803. It was a tense time.
Copy !req
804. If he was proven guilty,
Copy !req
805. that would have been a problem for us,
and they would be off the air.
Copy !req
806. During that time,
there was a lot of turbulence
Copy !req
807. and instead of people cheering me nonstop,
Copy !req
808. I'd hear a couple boos here.
Copy !req
809. Instead of, "We love Hulk Hogan"
or "Hulkamania Live Forever,"
Copy !req
810. I'd see a sign up that said,
"Did you take your shot today?"
Copy !req
811. And so I didn't feel like I was
in control of the crowds anymore.
Copy !req
812. And that's when I told Vince
I needed to go.
Copy !req
813. And it was not an easy conversation.
Copy !req
814. And whether or not
this is your last match,
Copy !req
815. I'd like to say that
on behalf of all of us, your Hulkamaniacs,
Copy !req
816. thank you for the memories,
and thank you for Hulkamania.
Copy !req
817. Thank you.
Copy !req
818. I don't think people fully appreciate
how dire things were looking.
Copy !req
819. All the scandals
were all piled on at the same time,
Copy !req
820. and it was a great opportunity
for our competition to make a move.
Copy !req
821. At that time,
Ted Turner, who owned WCW,
Copy !req
822. he was my biggest competitor.
Copy !req
823. I've been involved
with the wrestling business
Copy !req
824. since we started televising it
back in, I think, '73.
Copy !req
825. Ted Turner is one
of the pioneers of cable television.
Copy !req
826. Obviously founded TV networks
like CNN, TBS, TNT.
Copy !req
827. And he was one of the first people
Copy !req
828. to broadcast
professional wrestling nationwide.
Copy !req
829. We were the number two
wrestling promotion in the world.
Copy !req
830. Good morning, America, and welcome to WCW...
Copy !req
831. We might as well have been number 202.
Copy !req
832. That's the distance between WWE and WCW.
Copy !req
833. The type of program
and the content that WCW was producing
Copy !req
834. prior to me being hired
as executive producer
Copy !req
835. was just a really bad imitation
Copy !req
836. of what WWE was successful at.
Copy !req
837. There was no vision.
There was no strategy.
Copy !req
838. There was just
throwing things up against the wall
Copy !req
839. and hoping something would work
Copy !req
840. as long as it looked
something like what WWE was doing.
Copy !req
841. I had been following the steroid trials
Copy !req
842. and the controversy and everything
that went on as a result of that.
Copy !req
843. I was very well aware
that Hulk had left WWE
Copy !req
844. and was going to pursue
television and movies.
Copy !req
845. And, coincidentally,
I was down at Disney-MGM Studios
Copy !req
846. shooting my show for WCW
Copy !req
847. while Hulk Hogan was at Disney-MGM Studios
Copy !req
848. shooting a show
called Thunder in Paradise.
Copy !req
849. Here comes Eric Bischoff
wandering over to the set,
Copy !req
850. and he said,
"We really would love to have you
Copy !req
851. consider coming back to wrestling."
Copy !req
852. "We know you're filming the TV series."
Copy !req
853. "Even if part-time—" I said,
"Let's talk." You know? Let's talk."
Copy !req
854. I was not happy with the acting and being
locked up in a trailer most of the day.
Copy !req
855. Just wasn't me.
Copy !req
856. Hulk was torn,
because he loved wrestling,
Copy !req
857. he missed it,
Copy !req
858. but he also had
two very, very young kids at home,
Copy !req
859. and it was really important to him
to not be on the road 300 days a year,
Copy !req
860. and WCW provided Hulk
an opportunity to do both.
Copy !req
861. The nature of our contract was,
Copy !req
862. you may have a total
of 30 appearances a year
Copy !req
863. as opposed to 300.
Copy !req
864. Ted Turner was giving these guarantees.
Copy !req
865. "We'll give you a million dollars a year."
Copy !req
866. "How many days do you work?"
"How many you want?"
Copy !req
867. "I wanna work, uh, 100 days."
"Okay. You got it."
Copy !req
868. Where at WWE, I know when we were there,
it was seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.
Copy !req
869. I just looked at it as,
"I have this amazing opportunity."
Copy !req
870. "I'm gonna put my salesman hat on
and get this guy to join WCW."
Copy !req
871. When I left
and I had the meeting with Vince,
Copy !req
872. and it was an emotional meeting,
Copy !req
873. I actually told Vince,
"I will never run against you."
Copy !req
874. Because that was a concern.
Copy !req
875. He said, "I'm gonna go off
and do movies and things like that,
Copy !req
876. but I do want my release."
Copy !req
877. "But you're not gonna compete?
You know? You aren't gonna..."
Copy !req
878. "No. Absolutely not."
Copy !req
879. So, um, it was one of those things
where I gave him his release,
Copy !req
880. and next thing you know,
he's with the other guys.
Copy !req
881. WCW is about to dominate the globe
in professional wrestling.
Copy !req
882. That's why we're here today,
Copy !req
883. to sign the contract for a match
Copy !req
884. between two of wrestling's
biggest superstars,
Copy !req
885. Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair.
Copy !req
886. We had a very close
personal relationship.
Copy !req
887. I took him, and of course,
and made this huge star out of him.
Copy !req
888. And then from there, he decides
he wants to flip to our competition
Copy !req
889. and no longer be associated with you.
Copy !req
890. So, sure, emotionally, it hurt.
Copy !req
891. It broke my heart, you know. I mean, damn.
Copy !req
892. Hulk Hogan's defection to WCW,
right there in the middle of the trial,
Copy !req
893. that was an enormous slap in the face.
Copy !req
894. Even to this day.
Copy !req
895. That was taboo in my book.
Copy !req
896. Vince viewed Hulk as a lifer,
Copy !req
897. but Hulk was offered
a better deal with Ted Turner,
Copy !req
898. offered guaranteed money with Turner.
Copy !req
899. "Money talks,"
as the expression goes, I guess.
Copy !req
900. Hulk's looking at it also like,
Copy !req
901. "Man, I don't know if Vince
is gonna be there after the trial."
Copy !req
902. "I don't know if there's even
gonna be a company there to work for."
Copy !req
903. It's another day in court
Copy !req
904. for World Wrestling Entertainment founder
Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
905. Vince McMahon was charged with
conspiring to beef up his brawny wrestlers
Copy !req
906. with anabolic steroids.
Copy !req
907. This case should go on for several days,
Copy !req
908. and interest is expected to peak
Copy !req
909. when a pro wrestler
by the name of Terry Bollea testifies.
Copy !req
910. Of course,
he goes by the name of Hulk Hogan.
Copy !req
911. Wrestling insiders say that Hogan
will be the government's star witness
Copy !req
912. and testify against McMahon
at his trial in May.
Copy !req
913. After I left the WWE,
Copy !req
914. the government wanted me
to be their star witness.
Copy !req
915. I was told that if I didn't say
what they wanted to hear,
Copy !req
916. the target of the investigation
would be directed to me,
Copy !req
917. and I might do 17 years.
Copy !req
918. Hogan didn't want to testify
against Vince. They forced him to.
Copy !req
919. They basically had something on Hogan
and they wanted Vince,
Copy !req
920. and so Hogan had to.
Copy !req
921. The conviction rate
in cases like that was very, very high,
Copy !req
922. so at that point, it was like,
"God, the odds look against Vince."
Copy !req
923. I think a lot of the stuff in there
is evidence
Copy !req
924. of what I believed all along
has proven to be true...
Copy !req
925. I was there for two weeks, and I could
tell that Vince was scared to death.
Copy !req
926. Vince was in serious,
serious problems at that point.
Copy !req
927. I truly believe
in the law of the jungle.
Copy !req
928. Something's weakened,
then you want to pile on it and kill it.
Copy !req
929. So, at that time,
it was coming from everywhere.
Copy !req
930. How could I possibly
stand up to that and hold up, you know?
Copy !req
931. The law of the jungle. I get it.
Copy !req
932. I was granted immunity,
Copy !req
933. and I said, "Well... cool.
I got it. I know what I'm gonna say."
Copy !req
