1. Well, well... you've found
some wonderful property.Copy !req
2. It's a convenient twenty-minute drive
from the center of Berlin;Copy !req
3. Former
(East Berlin)Copy !req
4. in a well-located
and nice neighborhood.Copy !req
5. It's rare to find this sort of property
on the former East side.Copy !req
6. Umm...Copy !req
7. Wasn't this the residence
of Mr. Liebert,Copy !req
8. the consultant to the former
East German Trade Commission?Copy !req
9. Huh?Copy !req
10. What? You just came
to investigate Mr. Liebert?Copy !req
11. Is that all? You're not a customer?Copy !req
12. Sorry... There was something
I just had to find out.Copy !req
13. I wouldn't know anything about
an official who died ten years ago!Copy !req
14. The Lieberts adopted twins
while they were here.Copy !req
15. I told you, I don't know anything...Copy !req
16. What about the landlord?Copy !req
17. Can you introduce me to him?Copy !req
18. Listen... most of the land in
the former East side is the propertyCopy !req
19. of Jewish capitalists who escaped
from the Nazi regime.Copy !req
20. The eastern government was paying
foreign countries and capitalistsCopy !req
21. from the west side
and borrowing land.Copy !req
22. The landlord for this property
is overseas...Copy !req
23. Besides, my company is
a west-side real estate companyCopy !req
24. that prospered after
the destruction of the Wall.Copy !req
25. I don't know anything about the past.Copy !req
26. Now, get out.
I'm going to lock the gate...Copy !req
27. Isn't there anyone who knows
about ten years ago...Copy !req
28. someone who
remembers Mr. Liebert?Copy !req
29. As I told you, this is a residential area
for ex-government officials.Copy !req
30. Most fled after the Wall came down.Copy !req
31. Especially from the officials from
the Ministry of the Interior...Copy !req
32. Oh! Come to think of it...Copy !req
33. An ex-official of the former East German
Department of CommerceCopy !req
34. lives ten houses away from here...Copy !req
35. Yes, Mr. Liebert. He didn't have to
take such a risk, only to die.Copy !req
36. If only he had waited
just a little longer,Copy !req
37. until East Germany collapsed...Copy !req
38. It makes you wonder why
he went to a free country...Copy !req
39. Just to be killed of all things...Copy !req
40. Did Mr. Liebert have twins?Copy !req
41. Twins?Copy !req
42. Oh, I remember!Copy !req
43. Those twins that Mr. Liebert adopted
from the orphanage!Copy !req
44. Orphanage?Copy !req
45. They were such cute kids...Copy !req
46. Mr. Liebert always wanted children.Copy !req
47. W-Where is that orphanage?Copy !req
48. Umm... I think it was...Copy !req
49. Hmm... 511?Copy !req
50. Yes, that's right,
I think it was 511 Kinderheim...Copy !req
51. 511... Kinderheim?Copy !req
52. 511 KinderheimCopy !req
53. The site of this orphanage will soon
be turned into a supermarket.Copy !req
54. I'm relieved that this creepy building
is finally going to be destroyed.Copy !req
55. Excuse me, do you know anyone
from this orphanage?Copy !req
56. Someone from here?Copy !req
57. There isn't anyone.Copy !req
58. I don't want to talk about it.Copy !req
59. It's so creepy.Copy !req
60. B-But...Copy !req
61. If you really want to find out,
there's Hartmann over on 47th St.,Copy !req
62. who worked at the old
Ministry of Health and Welfare.Copy !req
63. Hey there... Do you know someone
named Hartmann who lives around here?Copy !req
64. What's wrong?Copy !req
65. You're injured... Let me take a look.Copy !req
66. It's all right. Don't be afraid.
Let me take a look.Copy !req
67. You've injured a healing wound...Copy !req
68. It's festering.Copy !req
69. Suck it up!Copy !req
70. This will sting a little,
but this will help you get better.Copy !req
71. All right, that's good...Copy !req
72. Don't trip!Copy !req
73. You'll get hurt again!Copy !req
74. Hartmann...Copy !req
75. I became the foster parent to all those
kids after the fall of East Germany.Copy !req
76. Foster parent?Copy !req
77. Yes, I took care of them until they
were adopted or went off on their own.Copy !req
78. The president of
an accessories companyCopy !req
79. adopted the kid in the middle.Copy !req
80. The kid to the left
is in the military right now.Copy !req
81. I'm even taking care of one right now.Copy !req
82. It must be hard work.Copy !req
83. I wouldn't call it work.Copy !req
84. I worked for many years,
dealing with orphans,Copy !req
85. as the district official for
the Ministry of Health and Welfare.Copy !req
86. I opposed the way that the government
was treating them at the time.Copy !req
87. After the fall of socialism, I wanted to
help the children in my own way.Copy !req
88. I'm poor and things
haven't gone my way...Copy !req
89. but, still, it's much better than
the orphanages that they were in.Copy !req
90. 511 Kinderheim was
a special orphanageCopy !req
91. that was run by both
the Ministry of Health and WelfareCopy !req
92. and the Ministry of the Interior.Copy !req
93. Well, all orphanages in East Germany
were more or less like that,Copy !req
94. but special orphanages
were the worst of them all...Copy !req
95. It wasn't just an institution
for children with nowhere to go...Copy !req
96. It was a gathering for
the children of criminals,Copy !req
97. captured political offenders,
and the children of thoseCopy !req
98. suspected of being rebels and spies.Copy !req
99. That's why it was expected that
they would be discriminated againstCopy !req
100. and treated inhumanely...Copy !req
101. The children there couldn't do
anything about their situation...Copy !req
102. It was a clash between socialism
and totalitarianism...Copy !req
103. The government told the public that
the orphans would be reeducatedCopy !req
104. and turned into model socialists.Copy !req
105. But in reality,
they were treated like criminals.Copy !req
106. The directors and instructors
were horrible...Copy !req
107. The worst ones would confiscate
packages sent to the childrenCopy !req
108. and sell them.Copy !req
109. Who were the real criminals?Copy !req
110. Fear and violence ruled
the special orphanages.Copy !req
111. No person would grow up
normal there.Copy !req
112. Then that incident happened...Copy !req
113. Incident?
What happened at that orphanage?Copy !req
114. You said that you wanted to
ask me about the twins, didn't you?Copy !req
115. Do you know something about them?Copy !req
116. I don't know much about the sister
because she was left at an orphanageCopy !req
117. in a different district.Copy !req
118. But I do know about
the brother, Johan.Copy !req
119. Johan! Yes, I want to
know about Johan!Copy !req
120. It was... It was top secret.Copy !req
121. The East German government
placed a strict gag order on it.Copy !req
122. Well, it was a long time ago...Copy !req
123. I think it's all right to talk about it...Copy !req
124. What is this incident?Copy !req
125. What did... What did Johan do?Copy !req
126. A revolt...Copy !req
127. I'm home...Copy !req
128. Dieter, we have a guest.Copy !req
129. Come and greet him.Copy !req
130. Oh!Copy !req
131. Dieter, what's with your attitude?Copy !req
132. Aren't you going to greet him?Copy !req
133. I-It's okay. We already met
in front of the house.Copy !req
134. Right?Copy !req
135. Oh... I'd like to hear the rest.Copy !req
136. No...Copy !req
137. Not in front of the child.Copy !req
138. Oh... you're right.Copy !req
139. It's already late so we should
meet another day.Copy !req
140. Dieter!Copy !req
141. Would you care to
have dinner with us?Copy !req
142. S-Sure.Copy !req
143. Mr. Tenma, you say that
you're a freelance journalist.Copy !req
144. Does that mean that you're going to
write an article about the thingsCopy !req
145. that you've investigated?Copy !req
146. Y-Yes, that's right.Copy !req
147. Then, this is one thing
I want you to emphasize...Copy !req
148. The development of a childCopy !req
149. all depends on the adult
that raises him.Copy !req
150. We must lead children
in the right direction.Copy !req
151. That's when children can
have pleasant dreams.Copy !req
152. Dreams, huh-?Copy !req
153. Dieter, what dreams do you have?Copy !req
154. A soccer ball...Copy !req
155. Huh...?Copy !req
156. I want a soccer ball!Copy !req
157. I see...Copy !req
158. Thank you for dinner.Copy !req
159. I'd like to continue where we left off
another time.Copy !req
160. Sorry we couldn't
finish our conversation.Copy !req
161. I'll come again.Copy !req
162. Perhaps I can come tomorrow.Copy !req
163. Dieter...Copy !req
164. Umm... Excuse me.Copy !req
165. Can I come in?Copy !req
166. Mr. Hartmann!Copy !req
167. It's Tenma.Copy !req
168. Mr. Hartmann!Copy !req
169. Mr. Hartmann! Mr. Hartmann!Copy !req
170. What happened, Mr. Hartmann!Copy !req
171. Mr. Hartmann...Copy !req
172. M-Mr. Tenma...Copy !req
173. Dieter!Copy !req
174. What happened?Copy !req
175. He fell.Copy !req
176. He was standing on the chair and...Copy !req
177. Oh, Dieter.Copy !req
178. Ow... ow, it hurts...Copy !req
179. Where does it hurt, Dieter?Copy !req
180. It hurts...Copy !req
181. Mr. Hartmann, call an ambulance!Copy !req
182. O-Okay.Copy !req
183. Dieter, let me take a look.Copy !req
184. What are all these scars?Copy !req
185. Is this it?Copy !req
186. Does it hurt here?Copy !req
187. Two ribs are broken...Copy !req
188. And his clavicle is dislocated.Copy !req
189. How did he get this injury
from falling off a chair?Copy !req
190. The ambulance will be here soon,
so it's all right.Copy !req
191. O-Okay...Copy !req
192. But what are all these injuries?Copy !req
193. I told you that it's all right...Copy !req
194. So you can leave.Copy !req
195. But...Copy !req
196. The way you touch those injuries...Copy !req
197. It's as if you're a doctor...Copy !req
198. Oh... well...Copy !req
199. Tenma...Copy !req
200. I thought I heard
that name somewhere.Copy !req
201. You're a doctor, aren't you?Copy !req
202. You're the one wanted for murder...Copy !req
203. This injury...Copy !req
204. Where are all these injuries
on his body from?Copy !req
205. Nevermind that... Shouldn't you
be running away, Mr. Tenma?Copy !req
206. I called the police
along with the ambulance...Copy !req
207. Mr. Hartmann! I'm asking you
how Dieter got all these injuries!Copy !req
208. It shouldn't matter
to someone like you,Copy !req
209. who's wanted for murder.Copy !req
210. It's just as I expected from a fugitive.
You're very short-tempered.Copy !req
211. You did it, didn't you?Copy !req
212. Did it? Did what?Copy !req
213. You were abusing Dieter.Copy !req
214. Abusing?Copy !req
215. Don't say such ill willed things
about me.Copy !req
216. Right, Dieter?Copy !req
217. What do you plan to do?Copy !req
218. I'm going to take him to the hospital.Copy !req
219. First murder, and now kidnapping?Copy !req
220. Don't move!Copy !req
221. You'll be caught even if you do that.Copy !req
222. It's all right, Dieter! I'm going to
get you to a hospital!Copy !req
223. I'm afraid of the hospital...Copy !req
224. There's nothing to be afraid of!Copy !req
225. The doctors will get you better.Copy !req
226. Mr. Hartmann always
makes me better...Copy !req
227. You're covered in injuries...
You've never been to a hospital?Copy !req
228. I'm afraid... Right now,
the world is full of bad things.Copy !req
229. That's why I have to be strong!Copy !req
230. Strong...Copy !req
231. Did Mr. Hartmann tell you that?Copy !req
232. The world is dark...Copy !req
233. The future is dark...Copy !req
234. That's not true!Copy !req
235. It's a big lie that the world is dark!Copy !req
236. Really?Copy !req
237. Yes, it's true.Copy !req
238. Oh, I forgot.Copy !req
239. Here... A soccer ball.Copy !req
240. Wow!Copy !req
241. Tomorrow will be... a good day.Copy !req
242. Sorry for coming at this hour.Copy !req
243. It's all right... But we're crowded with
emergency cases at the moment.Copy !req
244. It might take a while
until we can see him.Copy !req
245. Could you do something about that?Copy !req
246. - There was a very big accident.
- The bus driver died instantly.Copy !req
247. We need to ask the truck driver about
the circumstances of the accident.Copy !req
248. He broke both his legs,
but he can still talk, can't he?Copy !req
249. We have to treat him first.Copy !req
250. Question him later.Copy !req
251. - Then, we'll be waiting here.
- U-Umm...Copy !req
252. I'll be back in two hours.Copy !req
253. Huh?Copy !req
254. Please take care of that boy.Copy !req
255. Also, please don't let anyone
leave with him other than myself.Copy !req
256. U-Umm...Copy !req
257. Is the accident site cleaned up?Copy !req
258. No, it's still backed up...Copy !req
259. Now then...Copy !req
260. What should I do now?Copy !req
261. First, what to do with Dieter?Copy !req
262. Even if I go to the police...Copy !req
263. I can't go with him.Copy !req
264. I don't know much about
Johan's sister becauseCopy !req
265. she was left at an orphanage
in a different district.Copy !req
266. A different orphanage...Copy !req
267. That's it.Copy !req
268. There's a child that you
want me to take in?Copy !req
269. So, who are you? Why are you
coming here at this hour?Copy !req
270. I know it's an unreasonable request,
but this kid...Copy !req
271. I know that the kid is being abused.
But if I don't know who you are...Copy !req
272. Umm... Well...Copy !req
273. I can't take in a child from
someone so suspicious.Copy !req
274. U-Umm... could this be the orphanage
that took care of Anna Liebert?Copy !req
275. Anna Liebert?Copy !req
276. You know Anna Liebert?Copy !req
277. S-So Anna was here?Copy !req
278. Yes. How nostalgic...Copy !req
279. How is Anna doing? Is she well?Copy !req
280. Y-Yes.Copy !req
281. Right now, she's going
to Heidelberg University...Copy !req
282. I see. She's doing well!Copy !req
283. Anna was a nice girl...Copy !req
284. I knew she was adopted by
Mr. Liebert of the Trade CommissionCopy !req
285. along with her twin brother.Copy !req
286. Umm...Copy !req
287. What was his name?Copy !req
288. Johan.Copy !req
289. Yes, Johan, Johan.Copy !req
290. They were very close,
but I felt sorry for themCopy !req
291. when they were placed
in separate orphanages.Copy !req
292. Those two were really alone
before they came here.Copy !req
293. When they were taken into custody
near the border of Czechoslovakia,Copy !req
294. they were holding hands
as they walked.Copy !req
295. They both were shivering in the cold.Copy !req
296. At first, Mr. Liebert only
wanted to adopt Johan.Copy !req
297. But Johan wouldn't go
without his sister...Copy !req
298. Thankfully, Anna got to be happy.Copy !req
299. I heard that the conditions
of the orphanagesCopy !req
300. of the east side were horrible.Copy !req
301. We're not like 511 Kinderheim.Copy !req
302. Huh?Copy !req
303. Inge, the bathroom isn't that way.Copy !req
304. Okay? See?Copy !req
305. Mommy...Copy !req
306. It's all right. It's all right...
There's nothing to be afraid of.Copy !req
307. Now... you can go to the bathroom
by yourself, can't you?Copy !req
308. Those kids really did not know
a parent's love.Copy !req
309. You only need love in order to
develop as a person.Copy !req
310. As you say, the orphanages of
the east side were quite horrible.Copy !req
311. Even this place was once referred to
as Orphanage 47.Copy !req
312. But we did what we could
so we wouldn't be controlledCopy !req
313. by the government,
even just a littleCopy !req
314. in order to avoid becoming
like 511 Kinderheim.Copy !req
315. It was a special orphanage
run by bothCopy !req
316. the Ministry of Health and Welfare
and the Ministry of the Interior.Copy !req
317. Do you know what that means?Copy !req
318. No...Copy !req
319. The real state of affairs
was being managed byCopy !req
320. the Ministry of the Interior.Copy !req
321. That place was... East Germany's
experimental laboratory...Copy !req
322. A Little ExperimentCopy !req
