MAS*H 1x13

Arlene Golonka as Edwina • Marcia Strassman as Nurse Margie Cutler • Linda Meiklejohn as Lt. Leslie Scorch

The nurses go to extremes lengths to find a date for Nurse Eddie - they won't go out with anyone until Eddie gets a date. The men draw straws, and Hawkeye is the big loser, especially after Eddie nearly kills him in a scene resembling teenage "mating" rituals.

1. Heading this way.

2. Okay, everybody, this is it.

3. Ten seconds.

4. Nine, eight...

5. Light it!

6. Seven, six, five...

7. four, three, two, one.

8. Zero!

9. Surprise!

10. Happy birthday!

11. Happy birthday, Eddie.

12. Surprised?

13. Oh, wow!

14. We arranged that double ward duty

15. just so you'd be kept busy.

16. Yeah, we even hid all the bedpans just to make sure.

17. Blow out the candles.

18. Oh, I-I'm so sorry.

19. It's no problem.

20. Did you make a wish?

21. Oh, yes, I-I...

22. No, don't tell us what it is, or it won't come true.

23. Uh, may I make a toast?

24. No, but how about a farewell address?

25. Actually, I have a wish to propose,

26. a wish that very soon

27. we'll all be united with our loved ones.

28. Beautiful thought, Major.

29. Let's just hope nobody's wife or husband

30. - finds out about it. - (laughter)

31. Come on. Get to the loot.

32. - That one's ours. - We're first.

33. The pink one.

34. "To Eddie, keep an eye on your brass.

35. "Everyone else does."

36. - Oh-oh-oh-oh— - Oh, thank you.

37. That's brass polish,

38. so drink it slowly.

39. Oh, thank you. Thank you.

40. Hear, hear.

41. Please, allow me.

42. Thank you, Major.

43. The Ten Commandments!

44. Autographed?

45. "Uh,

46. to Eddie, for your own protection.

47. "From the girls." Oh...

48. Uh, it's a bulletproof girdle.

49. Did you want to say something, Henry?

50. Or are you just hoping for a free tonsillectomy?

51. As commanding officer,

52. I believe it falls to me to say a few words.

53. Little did I dream...

54. that one day I would be in the command—

55. I'm sorry!

56. Eddie!

57. What's the matter?

58. I knew you shouldn't have made that speech, Henry.

59. I'm okay, Margie, really.

60. It's just that song.

61. "For she's a jolly good fella."

62. Well, I'm not jolly, and I'm not a fella.

63. Margie, I am 28 years old,

64. and I have never—

65. had someone to care for me.

66. It takes time for the right guy to come along.

67. Oh, he's come and gone.

68. He's very handsome.

69. Hmm. It's not a good picture.

70. Seymour Chompki.

71. Nice name.

72. Ah, it's a terrible name,

73. but "Mrs." sounds so nice in front of it.

74. Well, it would have, that is.

75. We were engaged for almost two years,

76. and then Seymour was drafted.

77. Oh, I will never forgive North Korea

78. for starting up.

79. I wrote him every day,

80. and he answered promptly once a month

81. for the first month.

82. And then nothing.

83. So I joined up, too.

84. I thought, maybe if I became a nurse,

85. well, I might meet someone like Seymour,

86. save his life,

87. oh, and he would be so grateful that...

88. uhh—

89. I'm getting shipped home in a couple of weeks,

90. and no Seymour, no nobody else.

91. You can't give up.

92. Who wants me to give in?

93. Lieutenant, I've been very concerned about you lately.

94. You look down in the dumps.

95. Oh, don't worry about me.

96. I had the dumps as a child.

97. Now, based on my three classes in psychology,

98. two of which I cut,

99. I can tell you that your problem is all mental.

100. You think too much. It's very bad.

101. You should forget about your mind

102. and pay more attention to your body.

103. Or if you don't have the time, let me do it for you.

104. I am very concerned about Eddie.

105. Me. too. Did you know you've got sexy knuckles?

106. I didn't think that was possible.

107. There are ten guys for every girl on this base.

108. You'd think there would be one for Eddie.

109. My dear, Eddie is a lovely girl,

110. but she has a gift for calamity.

111. She's a land mine in bloomers.

112. Hawkeye!

113. Why don't we package your ears?

114. We could sell a million of them.

115. I knew it was an alkaloid,

116. but I forgot about its association

117. with other amebicides.

118. I've had the same problem.

119. Uh, excuse me, sir. Can you help me, please?

120. What's wrong?

121. I just got something in my eye.

122. - Dirt? - A finger.

123. How'd you get a finger in your eye?

124. It came through the hole in the tent.

125. What tent?

126. The one I had my eye up against.

127. I told you to stop peeking in the nurses' shower.

128. Well, everyone needs a hobby.

129. You're gonna be fine.

130. You put a heat compress on it, and you start looking

131. in the men's shower for a few days.

132. Uh, don't you wanna know

133. what I heard while I was peeking?

134. Frankly, I'd rather know what you saw

135. while you were peeking.

136. Nurse Cutler's got 'em all organized.

137. She said unless someone gets very friendly with Nurse Eddie,

138. things are going to get very cool around here.

139. Very cool?

140. And very lonely.

141. They wouldn't dare!

142. An attitude like that could destroy morale...

143. weaken the fiber of our brave men in white.

144. These boys depend on their relaxation

145. to renew and refresh their flagging spirits.

146. They must be allowed a moment's respite

147. from the trials of war.

148. Mmm, you smell divine.

149. I just washed my hair.

150. Listen, I've just given myself the rest of the day off.

151. Why don't we lock the door

152. and study a few old medical journals?

153. I have to wash my hair!

154. - You just did. - Well?

155. What's going on, Leslie?

156. All week long, every time I've wanted to be alone with you,

157. you have to wash your hair.

158. You're going to wind up with a head

159. that looks like a cue ball.

160. Excuse me.

161. Uhh!

162. The whole thing is inhuman, unfair, and un-American.

163. Besides, it's bad for the health.

164. Could you pass the salt, please?

165. Edwina Ferguson—

166. the face that launched a thousand longer faces.

167. Henry, you're the commanding officer.

168. Command the girls to cut this out.

169. It's driving us nuts.

170. Right, Hawk?

171. Right. You know,

172. you've got awfully pretty legs, Henry.

173. Let's not get carried away, huh?

174. I mean, we're not boys. We're men.

175. Thanks for the reminder.

176. And doctors besides.

177. I mean, let's see a little fortitude,

178. a little perseverance.

179. I've been hit by this thing, too, you know,

180. and you don't see me falling apart.

181. Shower's ready, sir.

182. - Is it cold? - Icy, sir.

183. Excuse me.

184. I don't have to tell you why we're all here tonight.

185. The time has come to end the siege.

186. Someone, at whatever risk to his life or limb,

187. someone must make Lieutenant Edwina Ferguson his own.

188. May I say that I find this whole proposition highly...

189. - Colonic? - Irregular.

190. I was close.

191. And I refuse to be part of this unholy confluence.

192. Uh, Frank, I think I speak for everyone here

193. when I say that if you don't lend

194. your full cooperation to our little enterprise,

195. you will be stripped naked, painted purple,

196. and dropped by helicopter behind enemy lines.

197. You wouldn't dare.

198. Uh, Radar, the straws, please.

199. Here you go.

200. There comes a time in every soldier's life,

201. from the lowliest private to the lowliest officer,

202. when he must put his own well-being

203. second to the greater good of his fellow fellows,

204. his comrades in arms, his war buddies.

205. Let us each, in his very own quiet heart,

206. say to that courageous man,

207. whoever he may turn out to be,

208. "And there, but for the fickle pick of fate, go I.

209. "And qué será, será.

210. "No hard feelings.

211. May the best man, uh, well, whatever."

212. Shall we make it two out of three?

213. Now that we all know the procedure,

214. - let's go for keeps. - (laughter)

215. Congratulations, pal.

216. We really appreciate this.

217. - I need a drink. - Double?

218. Yeah, About a size 11, triple-A.

219. Knock-knock.

220. Hope we're not interrupting anything.

221. Hey, what are they?

222. They're wearing our kinda uniforms,

223. but they're not built like us.

224. They're all, uh, soft and bumpy.

225. You don't suppose they're, um...

226. Girls?

227. That's it!

228. I couldn't think of the word.

229. Now, if I could only remember what they're for.

230. We just popped in to see what was happening.

231. I'm still hoping for a recount.

232. You?

233. Well, I want you women to know that I was fully opposed

234. to this degenerate, depraved, immoral, perverted,

235. and indecent proposal, but, if it must occur...

236. What do army regulations say about strangling a man

237. with his own tongue?

238. - Get out of my way. - Ah, don't worry, Frank.

239. I'd do the same thing for my own mother.

240. I almost envy Eddie.

241. It's too late for that now. I'm spoken for.

242. Now we'll all get to see how the great lover operates.

243. - Retractor. - Retractor.

244. - Give me some suction here. - Suction.

245. Clamp.

246. Clamp.

247. Oh, they're forceps. I'm sorry.

248. Perfectly all right. I like forceps, too.

249. In fact, I actually prefer them.

250. They're one of my favorite instruments.

251. May I join you?

252. Well, sure.

253. This job really makes me look forward to food.

254. This is why this stuff is such a disappointment.

255. Oh, it's not too bad.

256. Oh, you're too tolerant.

257. What I can't figure out is how they make food

258. taste like it's been drafted.

259. Here, let me, uh— Let me serve you.

260. Oh, thanks.

261. Ah, what have we today?

262. Perhaps you'd like to start

263. with some cream-of-leftover soup?

264. - No. - No?

265. Well, for an entree,

266. you can have, uh, pork chops

267. or our cook's award-winning beef stew.

268. The pork chops.

269. A very wise choice.

270. The award was presented by the North Koreans.

271. And you can have some vegetables or some gravy

272. that won't hurt you if you don't swallow it.

273. - Huh? - (giggling) No gravy.

274. Some coffee?

275. Oh, please.

276. You're very brave.

277. The coffee is made of gravy that didn't make it.

278. Where shall we sit?

279. You want to sit... together?

280. I've tried sitting apart. It's very painful.

281. Oh, thank you.

282. Margie tells me you'll be leaving us

283. in a couple of weeks.

284. You—

285. You're really lucky to be, uh, to be going home.

286. I have this—

287. I have this recurring fantasy that I'll go home

288. and my family will have left without any forwarding address.

289. You know, I could get 20 years for talking to myself.

290. Well, I'm just trying to figure out

291. why you're sitting here.

292. You-you usually eat with Margie

293. or one of the other girls.

294. Well, you're one of the other girls.

295. Why don't I believe you?

296. That's because you believe in the popular notion of me

297. as a glib, insincere operator.

298. - That's right. -Those are only some of my qualities.

299. Underneath there's another me.

300. Shy, sensitive, uncertain...

301. - Conniving. - Right.

302. But underneath that, there's another me.

303. Underneath there, of course, there's public parking.

304. Nonetheless, I still don't understand

305. why you're sitting here.

306. Because I find you an interesting person,

307. and I'd like to get to know you better

308. in the short time we have left.

309. You're not just saying that?

310. On my Hippocratic oath.

311. On second thought, make that my golfer's oath,

312. which is more binding.

313. You know, I wonder

314. what makes people attracted to each other.

315. Well, the first girl I really fell for,

316. it was— it was just chemistry.

317. You mean an electrical excitement?

318. Uh, no, no, she, uh, wrote all my chemistry papers.

319. Without her, I wouldn't have gotten into med school.

320. - Disgusting. - Vile.

321. Meet you in back of the kitchen.

322. Right behind the swill.

323. Hawkeye.

324. You're terrific.

325. Oh, thanks, coach.

326. Really, we appreciate it.

327. Yeah, well, I hope the Friends of Edwina Club

328. appreciate the fact that she and I

329. are having a date tonight.

330. - Oh, great! - Great?

331. She just stepped on my ankle. I have a run in my leg.

332. - You'll be fine. - Mmm-hmm.

333. You wouldn't wanna give me one last kiss, would you,

334. just in case she breaks my lips tonight?

335. Ah...

336. Oh, I love the way you have your place fixed up.

337. Trapper took a correspondence course in interior decorating.

338. He failed it, of course. Excuse me.

339. Japanese custom.

340. Fix you a martini?

341. Oh, I'm-I'm not a very good drinker.

342. Well, I'll give you a crash course.

343. I've never been in a man's tent before.

344. It's just like a woman's.

345. You just button it on the other side.

346. Thank you.

347. What shall we drink to?

348. How about to dry clothes?

349. I'm sorry.

350. No, not at all. Not at all.

351. I don't mind a wet T-shirt.

352. It saves me the trouble of sweating.

353. Eddie?

354. It's all right, Hawkeye.

355. I mean, y-you're nice to try,

356. but why don't we not pretend any more, huh?

357. I mean, I heard people talking.

358. I can figure things out.

359. So why don't we just pretend we pretended,

360. and-and everyone will be off the hook.

361. - Wait a second— - Oh, don't worry.

362. I'll tell everyone I had a wonderful time.

363. Oh, I'm-I'm sorry.

364. I-I'm so sorry!

365. That's okay. It's okay. Don't help me!

366. Ah! Don't press the ice in my eye!

367. Look what I'm doing to a doctor!

368. It's all right. Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

369. Oh, let's drop it, Hawkeye, please, huh?

370. - The game's over. - Okay, okay, it's over.

371. We're just two people waiting for a bus.

372. Or, in my case, an ambulance.

373. Come here. Sit down.

374. Look, you don't have to hurt somebody

375. just to make sure they don't hurt you first.

376. I-Is that what it is?

377. I think so.

378. Dance with me? Carefully?

379. - (sizzling) - Aah! Aah!

380. Ohh! Ohh!

381. I can't stand it. I'm hopeless!

382. Cheap glass. That's all.

383. Who cares about that?

384. That doesn't matter. What matters is you.

385. - (broken glass crunches) - (whimpering)

386. - Ooh! - What-what is it?

387. I'm not wearing any shoes!

388. Your feet! They must be cut to ribbons!

389. Lie down.

390. I killed you.

391. I don't have that kind of luck.

392. Just give me a minute.

393. Oh, I've-I've never seen anyone

394. try so hard to be considerate.

395. Edwina... may I kiss you?

396. - Is your mouth insured? - Shh.

397. That was nice.

398. - I didn't hurt anything? - No.

399. Oh, I will never forget this evening.

400. Me, neither.

401. Oh, thank you, Hawkeye. I'm so grateful.

402. That's not necessary.

403. To know I-I can be myself with a man,

404. to know I— well, I don't have to beat him to the hurt.

405. Oh, wow!

406. Goodbye, Margie. Thank you, Doctor.

407. - Goodbye, Edwina. - Goodbye.

408. If civilian life gets boring, we're always here.

409. Why are you still smiling?

410. No reason.

411. Buy me a cup of coffee?

412. Sort of missed you chasing after me

413. these past two weeks.

414. Well, a guy can find smoothness and grace

415. and aptitude attractive for just so long, you know.

416. Oh.

417. This better?

418. Oh! That's it. Much better.

419. You're my kind of girl.
