1. Potential juror number
17, please state your name.Copy !req
2. Richard Day.Copy !req
3. Can you state for the court
any preexisting opinion, any at all,Copy !req
4. that you may hold for the
defendant, Frank Castle?Copy !req
5. You mean the Punisher? I
think he's an animal...Copy !req
6. a sick, twisted, venal...Copy !req
7. Hero. That's what we
should be calling him.Copy !req
8. Doing the things the cops won't
do, Frank Castle is a...Copy !req
9. A grotesque insult to
the Second Amendment,Copy !req
10. a fascist without the authority.
If you ask me,Copy !req
11. people like Frank Castle ought to be...Copy !req
12. Applauded for putting all the thievesCopy !req
13. and muggers and rapists in the
morgue, where they belong.Copy !req
14. Let those bastards feel scared walking
down the street for a change.Copy !req
15. It's Son of Sam all over again.Copy !req
16. It's Bernie Goetz...Copy !req
17. It's like the only thing
protecting us is Frank.Copy !req
18. I just moved my family to New
York, and now we're moving out.Copy !req
19. If anyone can kill anyone in this town...
where does the insanity end?Copy !req
20. Counselors, over 400 potential jurors
have come through this courtroom.Copy !req
21. So I should tell you,Copy !req
22. if you can't agree to move forward
with the 12 men and women selected,Copy !req
23. I will make this trial a
living hell for all of you.Copy !req
24. Your Honor, New York hasn't seen a trial
this divisive and this public in years.Copy !req
25. Finding an impartial jury is not easy.Copy !req
26. Everybody has an opinion
about Frank Castle.Copy !req
27. It's New York, Mr. Nelson. Everybody
has an opinion about everything.Copy !req
28. Ms. Reyes, is the prosecution
satisfied with its jury panel?Copy !req
29. - Yes, Your Honor.
- And the defense, Mr. Nelson?Copy !req
30. - Uh, yes, Your Honor, we are.
- Thank Christ.Copy !req
31. The trial of The People
of New York v. Frank CastleCopy !req
32. is now in session.Copy !req
33. If I get my hands on the worthless
intern who organized these files...Copy !req
34. Oh, I'm sure that intern's just
following the DA's orders.Copy !req
35. It's not officially sabotage,Copy !req
36. - just sets it back.
- It's a cheap trick.Copy !req
37. We got bigger problems.
Like, locking a defense.Copy !req
38. - M'Naghten Rule's still our best bet.
- What's that?Copy !req
39. - Uh, the, uh, insanity plea.
- Whoa, whoa, guys...Copy !req
40. We need to buy a "not guilty" verdict.Copy !req
41. My high school debate team could
prove that Castle did it.Copy !req
42. We need an affirmative defense.Copy !req
43. Yeah, yeah, I get that, but I'm
not so sure Frank is insane.Copy !req
44. I'm no doctor, but I'd say he's
at least driven past Crazy Town.Copy !req
45. - Foggy, I'm serious.
- She has a point.Copy !req
46. I mean, insanity only has a 0.12%
acquittal rate in New York.Copy !req
47. Reyes is just gonna call inCopy !req
48. some expert shrink witness
to blow our case apart.Copy !req
49. - What case?
- Look, what if we...Copy !req
50. push for a mistrial?
We get more time.Copy !req
51. We talk about the DNR and the
suits and Reyes' involvement.Copy !req
52. We get her kicked off the case.Copy !req
53. She wouldn't see it coming.Copy !req
54. If we go down that road now,
we gotta prove, in a court of law,Copy !req
55. that the government willfully hid
evidence of the Punisher ambush,Copy !req
56. and that Reyes was involved.Copy !req
57. - Well, I was there and you were there.
- We're not exactly impartial, okay?Copy !req
58. And either way, we need an
opening statement tomorrow.Copy !req
59. I can open with PTSD as
a mitigating factor,Copy !req
60. focus on Castle's time at war.Copy !req
61. So you think the war is
what made Frank what he is?Copy !req
62. Our only goal is to reduce the
charges and set precedent.Copy !req
63. Castle made a lot of enemies, all right?Copy !req
64. If he goes into general
population, he's as good as dead.Copy !req
65. We need to get him somewhere safe,
where he can get help, and...Copy !req
66. citing PTSD could do that.Copy !req
67. I mean, none of us know
what Castle saw over there...Copy !req
68. but research suggests that... PTSD
can be triggered by new stressors.Copy !req
69. Like losing your family.Copy !req
70. I need to get to work on
the opening statement,Copy !req
71. but we need to be sure Castle
will get on board with this.Copy !req
72. Uh, I'll try.Copy !req
73. I mean, Frank made it pretty clear
he's willing to talk to me, at least,Copy !req
74. just as long as I'm alone.Copy !req
75. - Are you sure you wanna do that?
- Well, I wanna help.Copy !req
76. We have a better shot at
getting him to talk if I go.Copy !req
77. I'll grab the list of questions
I was working on.Copy !req
78. Okay.Copy !req
79. Karen...Copy !req
80. You know you don't have
to do this by yourself.Copy !req
81. It's okay. Castle doesn't scare me.Copy !req
82. - Maybe he should.
- I can take care of myself.Copy !req
83. I know... but
I'd be saying it to Foggy.Copy !req
84. Or a Navy SEAL.Copy !req
85. Just watch your back.Copy !req
86. Promise.Copy !req
87. Here you go. Just do me
a favor, stick to the script.Copy !req
88. Okay.Copy !req
89. - Wish me luck.
- Good luck.Copy !req
90. Grow up so fast, don't they?Copy !req
91. - Hi, Frank.
- Ma'am.Copy !req
92. Um, we've been, uh, looking
over similar cases...Copy !req
93. legal precedents, and, uh...Copy !req
94. we... we think it would help to bring
forth someone from your past...Copy !req
95. maybe from your... your military
unit, someone who could, uh...Copy !req
96. speak to the nature of your service.Copy !req
97. - What's that got to do with anything?
- Um... it's a character witness.Copy !req
98. Uh, we put someone on the stand who...
who knows you well.Copy !req
99. Uh, can... can speak to
what you've been through.Copy !req
100. PTSD, huh?Copy !req
101. We think it would
greatly help with your defense.Copy !req
102. Don't do that. It's an insult.Copy !req
103. Lots of veterans experience it.Copy !req
104. I'm not talking about me,
I'm talking about them.Copy !req
105. It's an insult to them, people who
are actually going through it.Copy !req
106. I know what you wanna do, you
wanna sit here and label meCopy !req
107. just another case of some crazy-ass
combat vet who lost his mind, huh?Copy !req
108. Maybe that'll appeal to some shitbag
jury in some shitbag court.Copy !req
109. It wasn't on a battlefield.Copy !req
110. That's not when my life went to shit.Copy !req
111. Now, ma'am, I believe that you told me
that you were gonna find me answers.Copy !req
112. That's what you said to me. Do
you have anything for me or not?Copy !req
113. - Not that easy.
- That what you want?Copy !req
114. - You want things to be easy?
- You are on trialCopy !req
115. for multiple homicides and you don't
have a defense strategy in place.Copy !req
116. You don't cooperate with us,Copy !req
117. it doesn't matter if I help you
figure out who killed your family,Copy !req
118. you will never see justice.Copy !req
119. All you will do, the rest of your
life, is rot in a goddamn jail cell!Copy !req
120. Colonel Ray Schoonover. My old CO.Copy !req
121. Let's forget the PTSD defense, but
if you want a character witness,Copy !req
122. the colonel, he will do.Copy !req
123. Thank you.Copy !req
124. Now, ma'am, do you have
anything for me or not?Copy !req
125. Maybe I just ought to go back and
rot in my goddamn jail cell?Copy !req
126. Yeah. Yeah, I did some digging.Copy !req
127. All right, there are huge moving parts
and they do not want to be seen.Copy !req
128. I've already looked at all of those.
I've done it a hundred times.Copy !req
129. Sure...Copy !req
130. but you haven't done it with me.Copy !req
131. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury.Copy !req
132. Imagine, if you will...Copy !req
133. Yeah, this is Matt.Copy !req
134. - I found a lead.
- Hold on.Copy !req
135. Elektra, I can't do this right now.Copy !req
136. The guy who encoded that ledger of ours?Copy !req
137. Some pervy NYU professor,Copy !req
138. master cryptographer who
teaches Asian studies.Copy !req
139. I'm gonna go beat the cipher out of him.Copy !req
140. - Yeah.
- You wanna come?Copy !req
141. - Hey.
- Hey.Copy !req
142. You check out these Dogs of Hell depos?Copy !req
143. Might as well have been
written in crayon.Copy !req
144. I think we could poke
some holes in these.Copy !req
145. That's great. Yeah. Just,
uh, give me a minute.Copy !req
146. The most important case we've ever
handled starts in the morning.Copy !req
147. I can't go with you.Copy !req
148. - Can't or won't?
- Can't.Copy !req
149. My life doesn't stop
every time you call.Copy !req
150. This may be our one chance
to translate this ledgerCopy !req
151. before the Yakuza adjust their plans and
we lose all the progress we've made.Copy !req
152. You're infuriating.Copy !req
153. Tell me in person. Two hours.
Barclay and Church.Copy !req
154. I know I'm into some sick
shit, but next time, I swear,Copy !req
155. all I wanna do is eat moo goo
gai pan off your bodies.Copy !req
156. All day.Copy !req
157. - We're not Chinese.
- Whatever, it's all hot to me.Copy !req
158. What?Copy !req
159. He's a repulsive asshole.Copy !req
160. A repulsive
asshole who pays well.Copy !req
161. I can't tell any of you
apart, but I guarantee...Copy !req
162. I know all your tongues
better than you do.Copy !req
163. So... be nice.Copy !req
164. Get out.Copy !req
165. Hey, honey, I'm home.Copy !req
166. And you've been awfully naughty.Copy !req
167. You're gonna wanna stay real still.Copy !req
168. What the hell do you want from me?Copy !req
169. - You were hired by the Yakuza.
- I don't know what you're talking about.Copy !req
170. You encrypted files for them.Copy !req
171. Money must be good.Copy !req
172. Not many professors can afford
garish, high-rise flatsCopy !req
173. and a revolving door of prostitutes.Copy !req
174. What do you want me to do?Copy !req
175. What you do best, Philip. Translate.Copy !req
176. But this time for us.Copy !req
177. They will kill me
if I tell you anything.Copy !req
178. And if you don't,
we'll make you beg for killing.Copy !req
179. Thirty stories up, Philip.Copy !req
180. You'd make a mighty good mess.Copy !req
181. More liquid than solid, I'd imagine.Copy !req
182. - What do you say, Professor?
- Come on, please...Copy !req
183. Please... please.Copy !req
184. - I'll pay you, I'll do anything.
- Once more.Copy !req
185. I can't. I can't, they'll kill me.Copy !req
186. It's gonna break.Copy !req
187. Okay! Okay, shit!Copy !req
188. Stop! I'll do it! I'll do it!Copy !req
189. I'll help you.Copy !req
190. All right, be a pet and
tell us how to read this last page.Copy !req
191. They wanted a code
that couldn't be hacked.Copy !req
192. I put the Japanese alphabet...Copy !req
193. through a cipher.Copy !req
194. Now...Copy !req
195. put the characters through the
matrix, you can decode it all.Copy !req
196. You do it.Copy !req
197. There's weekly shipments.Copy !req
198. Next one is tonight at 11:00.Copy !req
199. Bay Ridge Rail Yard.Copy !req
200. You find a boxcar with that number...Copy !req
201. and you can find the train
you're looking for.Copy !req
202. What are they shipping?Copy !req
203. It doesn't say, I swear.Copy !req
204. I swear! I
can't help you anymore.Copy !req
205. Well, thank you
for your help, Professor.Copy !req
206. Do yourself a favor. Find
better business partners.Copy !req
207. And kill your decorator.Copy !req
208. Hey. Hungry?Copy !req
209. No. I don't think
I'm ever gonna eat again.Copy !req
210. Cost of looking at these all day.Copy !req
211. Yeah. How about some fresh coffee?Copy !req
212. Yes.Copy !req
213. Uh, where's Matt?Copy !req
214. I thought he'd be burning
the midnight oil with you.Copy !req
215. I... He's, um...Copy !req
216. He's working on his opening statements.Copy !req
217. Oh.Copy !req
218. Did you... you talk to Castle?Copy !req
219. Yeah, um...Copy !req
220. He, uh, won't endorse PTSD, so...Copy !req
221. Oh, shit!Copy !req
222. He's... he's not having
war flashbacks, Foggy.Copy !req
223. It... it's just not the truth.Copy !req
224. Did Castle say anything that we can use?Copy !req
225. 'Cause when the judge calls
his first witness tomorrow,Copy !req
226. my only plan so far is
to run away, and...Copy !req
227. open a butcher shop.Copy !req
228. Well... I, uh, went over some
of our files with Frank.Copy !req
229. The medical examiner's report
from his family's murder,Copy !req
230. it's filled out by a, um...Copy !req
231. - Dr. Gregory Tepper.
- Yeah.Copy !req
232. He's the chief medical examiner.Copy !req
233. He's scheduled to testify for Reyes.Copy !req
234. Well... his report says that
Lisa, Frank, Jr. and Maria CastleCopy !req
235. each were killed by a single gunshot, but
Frank says there were multiple wounds.Copy !req
236. He describes them in awful detail, um...Copy !req
237. different angles, uh...Copy !req
238. bullet calibers, exit wounds
that are too big for a handgun.Copy !req
239. I mean, his family was
practically shredded.Copy !req
240. There's a discrepancy,
which is good, but...Copy !req
241. it's still their word against Frank's,
who was also shot in the head.Copy !req
242. Okay.Copy !req
243. Just for a minute...Copy !req
244. try... try to be Frank Castle.Copy !req
245. To be solely fueled by...Copy !req
246. by a single cluster of seconds.Copy !req
247. One moment in... in your entire life...Copy !req
248. And every time you close your
eyes, you relive that moment.Copy !req
249. And every time you open
them, you find only the...Copy !req
250. the briefest peace before you realize
that that nightmare is real.Copy !req
251. That nothing has changed.Copy !req
252. Your family isn't coming back.Copy !req
253. And so you watch them die...Copy !req
254. all over again right in front of you.Copy !req
255. We're not talking about something
that happened to Frank Castle,Copy !req
256. we're talking about something
that is happening to him.Copy !req
257. I hear you.Copy !req
258. But...Copy !req
259. short of having his
family's bodies exhumed...Copy !req
260. we still have no proof that what
Frank is saying is the truth.Copy !req
261. Okay, so...Copy !req
262. Let's say the ME's report...
was doctored.Copy !req
263. It's still tangential and,
so far, inadmissible.Copy !req
264. What?Copy !req
265. Unless we can get this ME to corroborate
Frank's story on the stand.Copy !req
266. Can you do that?Copy !req
267. It's a long shot. He's still
probably in her pocket, but...Copy !req
268. if it works...Copy !req
269. maybe we expose ReyesCopy !req
270. and we get the mistrial
you've been praying for.Copy !req
271. So, trial starts in a few hours,Copy !req
272. and in lieu of a bullet-damaged brain,Copy !req
273. our case hinges on getting
a dirty medical examinerCopy !req
274. to crack on the stand.Copy !req
275. Guess I'll call Matt. Give him the news.Copy !req
276. Oh, I'll do it.Copy !req
277. As long as he has the opening
statement of the year, I'd...Copy !req
278. I think maybe we have a chance.Copy !req
279. We should make bets on
what the Yakuza are exporting.Copy !req
280. Hundred bucks says exotic animals...Copy !req
281. or counterfeit purses.Copy !req
282. Last time these guys
brought something into town,Copy !req
283. it was a cargo ship transporting a kid.Copy !req
284. - Human trafficking?
- Yeah, something like that.Copy !req
285. - Oh...
- Elektra.Copy !req
286. All these cars are empty.
This one's full.Copy !req
287. So are the others beyond it.Copy !req
288. - Full of what?
- I don't know.Copy !req
289. There's no negative space.Copy !req
290. Cargo is uniform. There's no real shape.Copy !req
291. There's a lot of it, though.Copy !req
292. Enough to buckle the tracks.Copy !req
293. You're right. This is ours.Copy !req
294. Come on, let's go. Let's have a look.Copy !req
295. - Dirt.
- Do they know we're here?Copy !req
296. Is this a decoy?Copy !req
297. Wait.Copy !req
298. - They're coming.
- Let's go.Copy !req
299. You okay?Copy !req
300. The best things in life leave
you breathless, right?Copy !req
301. I'm glad you feel that way,
'cause I got something for ya.Copy !req
302. It's your lucky day.Copy !req
303. Ahh!Copy !req
304. What the hell took you so long?Copy !req
305. You hurt?Copy !req
306. Let me see.Copy !req
307. Ow.Copy !req
308. Do you think this one will scar?Copy !req
309. Don't they all?Copy !req
310. I suppose I'll never
have short hair again.Copy !req
311. Well, you could always tell people
you got it fighting the Yakuza.Copy !req
312. No one would believe you anyway.Copy !req
313. - All right.
- Thank you.Copy !req
314. We make a good team, Matthew.Copy !req
315. Keep some pressure on it.Copy !req
316. What do you tell people?Copy !req
317. About?Copy !req
318. Where you got your scars?Copy !req
319. Um...Copy !req
320. Lucky me, I wear suits to work, so...Copy !req
321. rarely comes up.Copy !req
322. What do you tell the
women you bring home?Copy !req
323. Well, they're enjoying
themselves too much.Copy !req
324. They don't ask.Copy !req
325. Sure.Copy !req
326. Oh, hey.Copy !req
327. - You're bleeding.
- Oh.Copy !req
328. - That okay?
- It takes a lot more to hurt me.Copy !req
329. You, on the other hand...Copy !req
330. Oh... I haven't seen this one.Copy !req
331. Yeah, the Russians like their knives.Copy !req
332. At least, I think it was the Russians.Copy !req
333. And these?Copy !req
334. The Yakuza.Copy !req
335. Actually, a ninja named Nobu.Copy !req
336. Nobu Yoshioka?Copy !req
337. What, you know him?Copy !req
338. By reputation.Copy !req
339. Yeah, this was him, too. That hurt.Copy !req
340. And the, uh, two on my back.Copy !req
341. Wasn't there in college.Copy !req
342. Most of them weren't.Copy !req
343. You've been busy, huh?Copy !req
344. Seems we both have.Copy !req
345. Where did you go, Elektra?Copy !req
346. The last time we were together...Copy !req
347. As far from you as I could.Copy !req
348. And... did you find whatever...Copy !req
349. you were looking for?Copy !req
350. Mostly I found that I was alone.Copy !req
351. Then why didn't you come back?Copy !req
352. Because you
don't know what I know.Copy !req
353. Because you deserve better.Copy !req
354. Lie down. Get some rest.Copy !req
355. I'm, uh... I'm really late.Copy !req
356. I... I will look into the exports,
see where they're coming from.Copy !req
357. Yeah.Copy !req
358. Have a good day in court, Matthew.Copy !req
359. Today, of all days...Copy !req
360. I mean, he said he'd be late,
but this is ridiculous.Copy !req
361. Foggy, what
is going on with him?Copy !req
362. All rise. Court is now in session,Copy !req
363. the Honorable Judge
Cynthia Batzer presiding.Copy !req
364. Indictment number 1986-4447,
The People v. Frank Castle.Copy !req
365. Be seated.Copy !req
366. Looks like you're a man down.Copy !req
367. Ladies and
gentlemen of the jury,Copy !req
368. the defendant has been indicted
for several serious crimes.Copy !req
369. But I'm instructing you,
as a point of law...Copy !req
370. You know those college stress dreams,Copy !req
371. when you show up to your
class in your underwear?Copy !req
372. - Yeah?
- That's me right now.Copy !req
373. God damn, Matt was supposed
to deliver opening, not me.Copy !req
374. Ms. Reyes, are the People ready
to begin opening statements?Copy !req
375. More than ready, Your Honor.Copy !req
376. Should we be worried?Copy !req
377. I mean, there's no way
Matt misses this, right?Copy !req
378. Ladies and
gentlemen of the jury...Copy !req
379. Frank Castle brutally tortured
and murdered 30 people.Copy !req
380. Thirty that we know of.Copy !req
381. He took the law into his own hands.Copy !req
382. Acted as judge, jury, and...
most violent executioner.Copy !req
383. And you will hear that the defendant's
victims were criminals...Copy !req
384. but the victims are not
on trial here today,Copy !req
385. and justice does not belong in the
hands of a man like Frank Castle.Copy !req
386. This isn't the Wild West.Copy !req
387. Justice is served here...
in a court of law.Copy !req
388. And it is up to each of youCopy !req
389. to take back the city from
lawless vigilantes...Copy !req
390. like Frank Castle.Copy !req
391. This man is no hero.Copy !req
392. He's a serial killer.Copy !req
393. And he is guilty.Copy !req
394. Thank you.Copy !req
395. Mr. Nelson, are you prepared
to make your opening statement?Copy !req
396. - She's good.
- So are you.Copy !req
397. Mr. Nelson?Copy !req
398. Mr. Nelson, are you reserving the right
to make your statement at a later time?Copy !req
399. Screw it.Copy !req
400. Um...Copy !req
401. No, Your Honor, um... the
defense is ready to proceed.Copy !req
402. Uh, ladies and gentlemen of the jury...Copy !req
403. the defendant, Frank Castle, is not...Copy !req
404. Sorry.Copy !req
405. Um...Copy !req
406. Mr. Castle is as much a victim...Copy !req
407. No, he's not.Copy !req
408. Okay, so...Copy !req
409. you're 19... standing in hot sand...Copy !req
410. sun burning down...Copy !req
411. noise...Copy !req
412. yelling, gunfire...Copy !req
413. The only thing that you know for sureCopy !req
414. is that you're surrounded by
an enemy that wants you dead.Copy !req
415. But you do it. You endure it.Copy !req
416. Why?Copy !req
417. Because you have orders.
And you have a duty.Copy !req
418. And also because your
life doesn't end here.Copy !req
419. You have people you
love waiting at home.Copy !req
420. Because... aside from being
a decorated marine...Copy !req
421. the man before you is a good
husband and an excellent father.Copy !req
422. Frank Castle returned
from the hell of warCopy !req
423. wanting nothing more than
to pick up his life.Copy !req
424. But his wife... young son and daughterCopy !req
425. were brutally murdered by criminals,Copy !req
426. and no one, not the police and...Copy !req
427. certainly not the District Attorney
stepped up to make it right.Copy !req
428. See, Frank Castle never came home.Copy !req
429. He just traded in one
war zone for another.Copy !req
430. This trial isn't about vigilantes.Copy !req
431. It's about the failure
of the justice system.Copy !req
432. And how one man, Frank Castle,
is being used as a pawnCopy !req
433. to cover up that system's mistakes.Copy !req
434. The prosecution wants blood.Copy !req
435. But as the judge just said...Copy !req
436. to get it, they have to prove their
case beyond a reasonable doubt.Copy !req
437. So all I'm asking of you today...Copy !req
438. keep an open mind.Copy !req
439. That's all, Your Honor.Copy !req
440. That was a pretty thick slice
of bullshit there, counselor.Copy !req
441. Prosecution,
call your first witness.Copy !req
442. Yes, Your Honor.Copy !req
443. - Sorry, guys.
- Where the hell have you been?Copy !req
444. Look, I made a mistake, Karen,
I feel terrible about it,Copy !req
445. but, Foggy, I caught some
of your opening statement.Copy !req
446. - You did great.
- He was amazing.Copy !req
447. Hey, hey, thanks for
keeping us afloat, buddy.Copy !req
448. Yeah, well...Copy !req
449. hopefully Reyes didn't notice
my buckets of flop sweat.Copy !req
450. And if the DA's office didn't
suspect we had nothing before,Copy !req
451. they gotta be sure now.Copy !req
452. Well, then we'll just
have to change that.Copy !req
453. Yeah, who's on the prosecution's
witness list for tomorrow?Copy !req
454. Uh... I've got it, here.Copy !req
455. Tepper, wonderful.Copy !req
456. Reyes is calling the
chief medical examiner.Copy !req
457. From rocky start to Hail Mary.Copy !req
458. Why, what do we know about him?Copy !req
459. I showed Frank a copy of his
family's autopsy report.Copy !req
460. He claims they're faked, and
Tepper's name is all over them.Copy !req
461. Well, that's great. All right.Copy !req
462. - So we should get him on the record.
- That's what we said.Copy !req
463. Which you would've known had you
shown up to the office at all.Copy !req
464. - Let me take lead on it, buddy.
- Like you took the lead this morning?Copy !req
465. You've made your point, all right?
Let me try at least.Copy !req
466. Let me get a crack at this guy.Copy !req
467. Even if we get the false
reports entered into evidence,Copy !req
468. and it's a big "if," since they
concern an unrelated crime,Copy !req
469. odds are slim that this clown's
gonna incriminate himself.Copy !req
470. Unless two brilliant attorneys can
figure out a way to trip him up.Copy !req
471. - Exactly.
- You want it? Knock yourself out.Copy !req
472. But Tepper ain't talking without a fight.
The DA's pulling his strings.Copy !req
473. And he's had plenty of time
to bulletproof his story.Copy !req
474. We only have 12 hours to tear it down. I
don't know how we do that by tomorrow.Copy !req
475. Because Karen's gonna catch me up,
and we're gonna figure out a way.Copy !req
476. Fine, but I'm going back to the office,Copy !req
477. 'cause I have the rest of
the trial to prep for.Copy !req
478. - You let him down, Matt.
- I know. Hey, I know.Copy !req
479. But I'm gonna make it up to him.Copy !req
480. And I'm gonna make it up to you.Copy !req
481. Come on.Copy !req
482. You get Tepper thinking
about the real report.Copy !req
483. - Mmm-hmm.
- The real truth.Copy !req
484. And then when he's disoriented, I
follow up with something like...Copy !req
485. "Who had you change the report?"Copy !req
486. And even if he says "no
one," it proves...Copy !req
487. It proves that the report was changed.Copy !req
488. - And that's...
- That's brilliant.Copy !req
489. - See? You're a natural.
- Huh.Copy !req
490. Well, I keep good company.Copy !req
491. Ah, you know what?Copy !req
492. Why don't I help you go through
Tepper's bread-crumb questions?Copy !req
493. We could, you know, set
'em up, knock 'em down?Copy !req
494. All right, but it'll be boring.Copy !req
495. And tedious.Copy !req
496. - Could take all night.
- Hmm.Copy !req
497. Well, I don't mind.Copy !req
498. - What?
- You ever consider law school?Copy !req
499. Oh, I don't know.Copy !req
500. Well, Foggy and I know a lot
of good people at Columbia.Copy !req
501. I mean, if it's even something you want.Copy !req
502. Just thinking Nelson and Murdock
might be more fun as...Copy !req
503. Nelson, Murdock and Page.Copy !req
504. You're... you're sweet. Uh...Copy !req
505. I don't know. I don't know if law
school's really the right fit for me.Copy !req
506. Um...Copy !req
507. I guess there's just something
about the rules and the loopholes.Copy !req
508. It just feels like the truth
gets lost a little too often.Copy !req
509. Well, not every case will be
The People v. Frank Castle.Copy !req
510. Right, right.Copy !req
511. But, you know, it's not
just this case. It's...Copy !req
512. Uh...Copy !req
513. What is it?Copy !req
514. You know, we...Copy !req
515. You ever...Copy !req
516. think back to the night we first met?Copy !req
517. Yeah, all the time.Copy !req
518. While I sat in that police station...Copy !req
519. alone.Copy !req
520. I was afraid of the whole world.Copy !req
521. Well, at least, until...Copy !req
522. you and Foggy came into my life and...Copy !req
523. You trusted me. You gave me hope.Copy !req
524. And then we came back to your place.Copy !req
525. I offered you Thai food.Copy !req
526. God...Copy !req
527. I remember everything about
that night, 'cause it's...Copy !req
528. not every day your life is threatened...Copy !req
529. then saved by a man in black.Copy !req
530. Hey, you...Copy !req
531. You believe in what he does?Copy !req
532. - You know, the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.
- Mmm-hmm, mmm-hmm. Um...Copy !req
533. I, uh...Copy !req
534. - What?
- I... believe in the law.Copy !req
535. - If that's what you're asking.
- Right. No, but... but...Copy !req
536. But what about when the law fails?Copy !req
537. Like it did with me,
like it did with Frank.Copy !req
538. You know, what are we supposed
to turn to? What should we...Copy !req
539. What should we believe
will protect us then?Copy !req
540. See, you're asking a Catholic lawyer.Copy !req
541. - I, uh... Yes.
- What do you...Copy !req
542. - What do you want me to say?
- I don't know.Copy !req
543. Uh, I guess it's just...Copy !req
544. ever since we took on
Frank's case, like...Copy !req
545. I keep...Copy !req
546. I keep asking myself if there's
really a difference between...Copy !req
547. between someone who saves lives and...Copy !req
548. someone who prevents lives from
needing to be saved at all.Copy !req
549. Right?Copy !req
550. Wait... Wait a second.Copy !req
551. Frank Castle should be behind bars.Copy !req
552. I mean, he deserves a fair
trial, but he's murdered people.Copy !req
553. Yeah, right. Bad people.Copy !req
554. I mean, like the ones
who killed his familyCopy !req
555. or the ones who came after me.Copy !req
556. But it's not Frank's
decision who lives or dies.Copy !req
557. That's up to God...Copy !req
558. or sometimes a jury.Copy !req
559. What happened to Frank's
family is a tragedy, Karen,Copy !req
560. but it doesn't give him
the right to kill...Copy !req
561. No. No, no, no. God... God, no!
Not the right, that's...Copy !req
562. That's not what I'm saying.
I'm just saying that...Copy !req
563. I can understand why Frank... why...Copy !req
564. why anyone would seek vengeance
for something after...Copy !req
565. - after losing it...
- Whoa, no, no, no.Copy !req
566. That's not the same.
Vengeance is not justice.Copy !req
567. What he's doing is completely wrong.Copy !req
568. But, right or wrong, you
can't deny that it works.Copy !req
569. You really believe that?Copy !req
570. I don't know. No.Copy !req
571. Maybe.Copy !req
572. - Um...
- No, um...Copy !req
573. You know, maybe this is a
good time to call it a night.Copy !req
574. I just think we're both exhausted, and...Copy !req
575. You know, a case this
big, let's just...Copy !req
576. Um...Copy !req
577. Yes, you're probably right.Copy !req
578. I don't know, maybe, uh, after...
after the trial's over.Copy !req
579. - Yeah, a real date next time.
- Good.Copy !req
580. Thanks.Copy !req
581. - Uh, good night.
- Good night, Karen.Copy !req
582. Get some rest.Copy !req
583. - How long were you listening?
- I wasn't listening.Copy !req
584. I didn't hear anything about your workCopy !req
585. that would make me want to tie a
noose and test it on my neck.Copy !req
586. I won't even mention what I didn't
hear about your girlfriend.Copy !req
587. - I warned you not to interrupt my life.
- This is not your life, Matthew.Copy !req
588. You may not give a damn about
what I've made for myself,Copy !req
589. but that is what's most important to me.Copy !req
590. All right? She... is important to me.Copy !req
591. Right.Copy !req
592. Sorry.Copy !req
593. I didn't know your time pairing wine
with Thai food was so important.Copy !req
594. What do you want?Copy !req
595. I looked more carefully at
Roxxon's construction investment.Copy !req
596. Seems there's only a small
number of projects in New YorkCopy !req
597. capable of moving that much dirt.Copy !req
598. We pay the sites a visit, I bet
we find out what they're hiding.Copy !req
599. - What are these sites?
- Um...Copy !req
600. The Conservatory Hotel, the
Midtown Tunnel project,Copy !req
601. and some big build
site at 44th and 11th.Copy !req
602. 44th and 11th.Copy !req
603. - You know it?
- Yeah, Midland Circle.Copy !req
604. There was a tenement on that blockCopy !req
605. before Wilson Fisk swallowed it up
in his Better Tomorrow initiative.Copy !req
606. - How did the Japanese get hold of it?
- I don't know.Copy !req
607. But before I fought Nobu, I found
blueprints at Midland Circle.Copy !req
608. Now, I always thought Nobu was just
a weapon Fisk sent to take me out,Copy !req
609. that Fisk had interests
tied up in the building,Copy !req
610. but maybe he didn't want it at all.Copy !req
611. I mean, what if he only acquired
Midland Circle for the Japanese?Copy !req
612. That's a curious riddle,Copy !req
613. one I think we should
go and solve together.Copy !req
614. Elektra, I got court in the morning.Copy !req
615. - I got a case to prepare, I got...
- Tomorrow night, then.Copy !req
616. Cheap wine.Copy !req
617. Finish your homework.
I'll do some recon.Copy !req
618. And so, Dr. Tepper,
the medical examiner's officeCopy !req
619. can confirm that the 15 victims
found at the Irish Social ClubCopy !req
620. all died of multiple gunshot wounds.Copy !req
621. Yes, that's correct.Copy !req
622. Um, all 15 victims died of wounds
inflicted by the same caliber bullet...Copy !req
623. each shot multiple times.Copy !req
624. Thank you.Copy !req
625. Your witness.Copy !req
626. - Cross your fingers.
- I'm crossing everything.Copy !req
627. Dr. Gregory Tepper,Copy !req
628. how long have you been medical
examiner for the city of New York?Copy !req
629. Uh, 14 years, uh, give or take.Copy !req
630. And how many death certificates would you
estimate you've signed in that time?Copy !req
631. Huh?Copy !req
632. Um, I don't, uh...Copy !req
633. It's probably in the tens of thousands.Copy !req
634. Objection, Your Honor,
leading the witness...Copy !req
635. - I'm not sure where.
- Mr. Murdock...Copy !req
636. I have something I need to say.Copy !req
637. - Doctor?
- Your Honor, I'm sorry, but...Copy !req
638. I have to, on the record...Copy !req
639. I need to say something
about what I did.Copy !req
640. - Clear the gallery.
- Yes, Your Honor.Copy !req
641. All jury members, please exit
back to the deliberation room.Copy !req
642. Everyone in the gallery,Copy !req
643. please make your way out of
the courtroom at this time.Copy !req
644. What's all this about?Copy !req
645. I...Copy !req
646. I know what the defense was gonna
ask me about, and it's true.Copy !req
647. I altered the autopsy reports.Copy !req
648. Uh, you're referring to
the official findingsCopy !req
649. on the murders of Frank Castle's family?Copy !req
650. Not just them.Copy !req
651. You don't understand. I had to do it.Copy !req
652. - Those animals came to my office.
- Who came to your office?Copy !req
653. After the defendant's
family was murdered,Copy !req
654. two men I'd never seen before...Copy !req
655. they warned me, if I didn't
fix the case reports,Copy !req
656. they'd come after my family next.Copy !req
657. You falsified the autopsy
findings on the Castle family?Copy !req
658. Them and one more.Copy !req
659. - Who?
- I don't know.Copy !req
660. Some John Doe killed the same day.Copy !req
661. Male, adult, multiple gunshot wounds.Copy !req
662. Look, you can fire me, arrest me...
I don't care.Copy !req
663. I thought this was behind
me, but after last night...Copy !req
664. Doctor, did something happen last
night to impact your testimony?Copy !req
665. She was in my house.Copy !req
666. She tied me up.Copy !req
667. She said she didn't give a
damn who got to me before.Copy !req
668. If I didn't tell the defense
what really happened,Copy !req
669. she'd hunt me down and kill me.Copy !req
670. - Who told you this?
- I don't know.Copy !req
671. A woman.Copy !req
672. Her face was covered. Had
some foreign accent.Copy !req
673. Your Honor, I believe the defense
intends to distract the juryCopy !req
674. and make this case about some
impossible-to-prove conspiracy theories...Copy !req
675. Impossible to prove?Copy !req
676. Your ME just confirmed that he
doctored the autopsy records.Copy !req
677. He also said that he'd been threatened.Copy !req
678. If my office finds out that your
firm had anything to do with this...Copy !req
679. Our firm? For all we know, it
was you who sent those goons.Copy !req
680. I've heard enough.Copy !req
681. It's clear to me that whatever Dr. Tepper
may know about these autopsy reportsCopy !req
682. has been taintedCopy !req
683. by threats made by person
or persons unknown.Copy !req
684. Then the defense asks for a mistrial.Copy !req
685. Not on your life, Mr. Nelson. I'm
still not convinced these documents,Copy !req
686. whatever they may be, are
even relevant to this trial.Copy !req
687. I'm striking the doctor's
entire testimonyCopy !req
688. and instructing the jurors to disregard
anything they may have heard.Copy !req
689. - Your Honor, I strongly urge you to...
- We're done here, counselor.Copy !req
690. Trial will reconvene tomorrow with
the prosecution's next witness.Copy !req
691. Once again, Reyes finds
a new way to screw us.Copy !req
692. You'd think it'd get easier,
but somehow it's more painful.Copy !req
693. Foggy. Foggy... it wasn't Reyes.Copy !req
694. - What?
- The woman who threatened Tepper.Copy !req
695. It was Elektra.Copy !req
696. From college.Copy !req
697. - Elektra?
- Yeah, she's back in town.Copy !req
698. - Your ex-girlfriend?
- Yes.Copy !req
699. No. This is insane.Copy !req
700. She's a diplomat's daughter, a...
a debutante.Copy !req
701. Not anymore. She's, uh...Copy !req
702. She's... she's different. She's...
she's dangerous.Copy !req
703. Yeah, no shit. She
nearly got you expelled.Copy !req
704. I mean, she screwed your semester
of torts, civil procedure...Copy !req
705. You almost missed the final
because she hurt you so bad.Copy !req
706. And now, what?Copy !req
707. - She's... breaking into an ME's house?
- Okay.Copy !req
708. So, the Yakuza
didn't go away, all right?Copy !req
709. They're still here in Hell's Kitchen.Copy !req
710. Elektra is trying to help me
stop them, infiltrating...Copy !req
711. What are you even talking about?Copy !req
712. She was going up against
them by herself, and she...Copy !req
713. - Your ex-girlfriend?
- Yeah, I'm trying to protect the city...Copy !req
714. I knew she was crazy, I didn't
know that she was homicidal.Copy !req
715. She's, um...Copy !req
716. my new client.Copy !req
717. Foggy, the, uh... rich one.Copy !req
718. The private one.Copy !req
719. - You lied again.
- I did, I lied,Copy !req
720. but, look, the Yakuza are
funneling money into somethingCopy !req
721. even bigger and darker
than before, all right?Copy !req
722. Elektra came to me, I'm
trying to help her...Copy !req
723. You wanted to take this trial!Copy !req
724. You missed strategy sessions...Copy !req
725. witness prep, opening statements,
and you criminally decimate...Copy !req
726. No, I didn't. She...Copy !req
727. I never told her anything
about the trial, all right?Copy !req
728. The one witness that could've
helped us do what I wanted to do,Copy !req
729. which is take down Reyes!Copy !req
730. She must've overheard me talking to
Karen, and then she moved on her own.Copy !req
731. I would... I didn't
sanction, I would never...Copy !req
732. - I don't care! I don't care, Matt!
- I'm furious with her!Copy !req
733. Stop acting like these
things just happen to you!Copy !req
734. No one's making you go out all hours
of the night fighting bad guysCopy !req
735. and nobody makes you lie to your
friends, over and over again!Copy !req
736. Elektra is not the problem, Matt.Copy !req
737. You are.Copy !req
738. It's almost dark.Copy !req
739. - I'm sure there's someplace you gotta be...
- You're not walking away.Copy !req
740. - No, 'cause you know what?
- Don't walk away from me, Foggy.Copy !req
741. If the last few days are any indication,
you sure as hell haven't been here!Copy !req
742. Going forward, I will count
on you for nothing at all.Copy !req
743. Tell your girlfriend to
stay away from my trial.Copy !req
744. Yeah, she's not... Elektra's
not my girlfriend.Copy !req
745. Then you should be the one
to tell Karen about her.Copy !req
746. Hey.Copy !req
747. - Hey, I heard yelling.
- Yeah, you should talk to Matt about it.Copy !req
748. Foggy!Copy !req
749. - Hey, what the hell happened in there?
- We're fine.Copy !req
750. No, no, no, you don't treat me
like I'm just your secretary.Copy !req
751. I've done more work on
this case than you have!Copy !req
752. - I can't get into this right now, Karen.
- No, enough of the dodgy bullshit.Copy !req
753. I deserve to know what is
going on with you two.Copy !req
754. With you.Copy !req
755. You asking as my co-worker?Copy !req
756. Or my girlfriend?Copy !req
757. - Both.
- Yeah.Copy !req
758. I am sorry you're caught
in the middle of this,Copy !req
759. but right now, I have to go.Copy !req
760. - Where?
- I'll see you tomorrow, Karen.Copy !req
761. Yeah, maybe.Copy !req
762. What the hell did you do?
I told you to stay out of my life.Copy !req
763. I never asked you to coerce a witness!Copy !req
764. - You had a problem, so I stepped in.
- No! It doesn't help.Copy !req
765. We can't even use his testimony because
of you. It was all thrown out.Copy !req
766. I was only following your rules.Copy !req
767. - What rules?
- You don't get what you want by day.Copy !req
768. You take it by force at night.Copy !req
769. This is who you are, Matthew.Copy !req
770. And don't fool yourself into
thinking it's anything else.Copy !req
771. What I do...Copy !req
772. is none of your business.Copy !req
773. - Both halves of my life are mine.
- Fine.Copy !req
774. I'll stay out of your boring legal shit.Copy !req
775. Now, you wanna fight me?Copy !req
776. Or you wanna fight the guys who
