1. Dear Simon,Copy !req
2. when I came out in
front of the whole school,Copy !req
3. I said I didn't care
what people think...Copy !req
4. - Yes, queen!Copy !req
5. But people sure don't mind
telling me what they think.Copy !req
6. - I want you to know that I see you.Copy !req
7. - Thanks.Copy !req
8. - Love is love.Copy !req
9. It's like coming out gave everyone
an excuse to share their opinion.Copy !req
10. Or to get my opinion about things
I know nothing about.Copy !req
11. - Hey, girl!Copy !req
12. - Me?Copy !req
13. - What do you moisturize with?Copy !req
14. - Water.
- Water?Copy !req
15. Fine, don't share with us
your flawless skin secrets, bitch!Copy !req
16. - Okay.Copy !req
17. I never thought coming out would beCopy !req
18. an invitation for strangers to talk to me.Copy !req
19. Or that the people I used to talk to
would suddenly feel like strangers.Copy !req
20. Hey, Salazar!Copy !req
21. Do you mind if we chat?Copy !req
22. - Um, yeah, sure.Copy !req
23. First day of practice.Copy !req
24. How's my star player?Copy !req
25. - Uh, excited.Copy !req
26. I've been practicing
my jump shot all summer.Copy !req
27. - Great.Copy !req
28. So, um, I heard about
your recent announcement.Copy !req
29. - Yeah. It's okay.
We, we really don't have to talk about it.Copy !req
30. - Listen, I think it's awesome.
I really do. Um...Copy !req
31. I mean, I'm basically gay, myself.Copy !req
32. I've been living with my best friend
Mike for twenty years,Copy !req
33. and we share a SodaStream, so...Copy !req
34. Okay, um...Copy !req
35. The point I'm trying to make
is that I want youCopy !req
36. to feel comfortable and safeCopy !req
37. both on the court,
and in the locker room.Copy !req
38. And also, uh, in fact,Copy !req
39. if-if you would now like to maybe change
away from the other guys,Copy !req
40. I mean, we could figure that out.Copy !req
41. I actually have an empty coach's office
that nobody's using.Copy !req
42. It's got its own shower.Copy !req
43. I mean,
you'd have your own changing area!Copy !req
44. I mean, Steph Curry
doesn't even have that.Copy !req
45. - Uh, thanks, but I'll just keepCopy !req
46. showering and changing
with the rest of the team.Copy !req
47. - Victor, um...Copy !req
48. It's, it's not a big deal, but, uh,Copy !req
49. there have been some complaints.Copy !req
50. - Complaints about me changing
with the team?Copy !req
51. - I'm just trying to keep
everybody happy, okay?Copy !req
52. So would you think about it?Copy !req
53. You're a good kid, Victor.Copy !req
54. And I'm very proud of you.Copy !req
55. I'll see you at practice. Go, Grizzlies.Copy !req
56. I still don't get what you're going for.Copy !req
57. - Um, if I say it's a, a, a
physical manifestationCopy !req
58. of the metaphysical
human experience,Copy !req
59. does that make me pretentious?Copy !req
60. - Very. But it also makes you pretty cool.Copy !req
61. Where are you, anyway?Copy !req
62. Why are you working there
instead of the campus studio?Copy !req
63. - Um, so I'm in a, a warehouse off-campus.Copy !req
64. That's a really nice sketch.Copy !req
65. - Thanks. It's a surrealist take
on my parents' backyard.Copy !req
66. - How much longer are you gonna
hide out in here during lunchCopy !req
67. because you're avoiding Victor—Copy !req
68. And that's the totally non-obnoxious wayCopy !req
69. I'll fail to be the next Kehinde Wiley.Copy !req
70. - That is so, uh, thought-provoking.Copy !req
71. Uh, what are you up to tonight?Copy !req
72. - I need to finish this piece,Copy !req
73. but, uh, there's a party on Buck Row
I was maybe gonna hit up. Why?Copy !req
74. - Um, no reason. I, um,Copy !req
75. I'm mean, I'm probably gonna
just be working, too,Copy !req
76. but, uh, maybe send me the deets,Copy !req
77. and if I finish early, I'll stop by.Copy !req
78. - Sounds like a plan.Copy !req
79. Bye, Mia.Copy !req
80. - Bye.Copy !req
81. [Lake squeals, laughs]
Was that cool?Copy !req
82. - Um, making art while
seducing older men?Copy !req
83. You are literally Beyoncé.Copy !req
84. - I just got invited to a college party.Copy !req
85. Wait. Okay, if I'm a cool college kid,Copy !req
86. I need some cool college friends,Copy !req
87. so are you and Felix down to come?Copy !req
88. - Yes. We need a fun night out.Copy !req
89. Now come have lunch with usCopy !req
90. so we can plan our college party looks.Copy !req
91. - Oh, no...Copy !req
92. This was for my grandma.Copy !req
93. - Oops.Copy !req
94. - Rainbow sprinkles.Copy !req
95. A little on the nose, right?Copy !req
96. - Okay, let's get started.Copy !req
97. Welcome to PFLAG.Copy !req
98. For our first timers,
this is a support groupCopy !req
99. for parents, families,
and allies of LGBTQ people.Copy !req
100. My name is Jack. My son Simon
came out a few years back,Copy !req
101. and we're here to talk about
how great, and weird,Copy !req
102. and complicated coming out can be.Copy !req
103. Not just for the people doing it...Copy !req
104. but for all of us.Copy !req
105. Uh, sir.Copy !req
106. Why don't you start us off?
What's your story?Copy !req
107. - Sure. Uh, okay, uh,Copy !req
108. I'm Armando, and my son just came out.Copy !req
109. Yeah.Copy !req
110. That's pretty much my story.Copy !req
111. Who in your family's gay?Copy !req
112. - Here she is.Copy !req
113. Five-hundred words, ready to go.Copy !req
114. - There's nothing
too smart in here, right?Copy !req
115. Like any words I wouldn't know
or anything?Copy !req
116. - It's a solid C plus. Yeah.Copy !req
117. We want your improvement to be
miraculous, but believable.Copy !req
118. - Thanks.Copy !req
119. - Hey.
- Hey.Copy !req
120. How it's going with your mom?Copy !req
121. - Still not great,Copy !req
122. but I have a new side hustle
to make rent,Copy !req
123. and I can pay you back this week.Copy !req
124. - Cool. No rush.
- Cool.Copy !req
125. - Hey. If you ever wanna, like,Copy !req
126. hang out to vent or whatever...Copy !req
127. I'm around.Copy !req
128. - Yeah. Yeah, that would
actually be great.Copy !req
129. Thanks.Copy !req
130. Hey, bae. Exciting news.Copy !req
131. So, we are going with Mia
to a college party tonight.Copy !req
132. - Uh, tonight?
Uh, I kind of have a lot of homework.Copy !req
133. - Again? I mean, you're like, crazy smart,Copy !req
134. and this school isn't even that good.
What's going on?Copy !req
135. - I may have started a little businessCopy !req
136. writing essays for kids.Copy !req
137. - What? Felix, cheating is serious.Copy !req
138. I mean, look what happened
to Olivia Jade's mom.Copy !req
139. And more importantly,
Olivia Jade's brand.Copy !req
140. I mean, what do you even
need the money for?Copy !req
141. - DJ equipment.Copy !req
142. Yeah, I'm saving up for the new
Pioneer DDJ-1000SRT—Copy !req
143. - Okay, I need you to stop
saying letters at me.Copy !req
144. Felix, I mean, DJ equipment
is not a good reason to cheat.Copy !req
145. Or to totally blow off
your girlfriend all week.Copy !req
146. I miss you.Copy !req
147. - I miss you, too.Copy !req
148. Okay. All right, I'll,
I'll go to the party.Copy !req
149. - Yay! Thank you.Copy !req
150. So, uh, do you wanna come over
after school so we can hang out before?Copy !req
151. - Sounds great.Copy !req
152. - I'm really sorry, Vic.
- Sorry about what?Copy !req
153. - Some guys on my team don't want me
changing with them.Copy !req
154. - What the hell?
- Seriously?Copy !req
155. - Yeah, I know.
What kind of insecure assholeCopy !req
156. can't handle showering around a gay guy?Copy !req
157. - This is bullshit.Copy !req
158. It's just so stupid.Copy !req
159. You know, like, I, I've been changing
with these guys for over a year now.Copy !req
160. Do they think that now that I'm out,Copy !req
161. I'm gonna turn into
some kind of sexual predator?Copy !req
162. - Seriously. But also, like, why are they
worried about you looking at them?Copy !req
163. You are literally dating the
most gorgeous guy at Creekwood.Copy !req
164. Well, I mean, you know...Copy !req
165. beauty is in the
eye of the beholder, so...Copy !req
166. - Yeah. Behold Benji, bitch.Copy !req
167. - Yeah, I'll be right back.Copy !req
168. Uh, hey. Hey, Andrew.
Um, can we talk for a second?Copy !req
169. - What's up, Salazar?Copy !req
170. - You know what's up.Copy !req
171. - All right, listen.Copy !req
172. I don't know who complained to Coach Ford,
but it wasn't me.Copy !req
173. I don't care who checks me out naked:
guys, girls,Copy !req
174. the old widow next door
when I leave the blinds open.Copy !req
175. It's all very flattering, you know?Copy !req
176. - You're the team captain.Copy !req
177. You know who complained.Copy !req
178. - What if I tell you who it is?
Then what?Copy !req
179. You call them out, and suddenly
they realize how ignorant they're beingCopy !req
180. and they apologize to you?Copy !req
181. Victor, look, you are the best player
on the team.Copy !req
182. - So what?Copy !req
183. - So show up tonight at practice
and, and dominate.Copy !req
184. Then hopefully they'll realize
how ignorant and stupid they're being,Copy !req
185. and everything will just
go back to normal.Copy !req
186. Just be undeniable, yeah?Copy !req
187. Trust me.Copy !req
188. - Um, hey.Copy !req
189. - I'll see ya. Armando.Copy !req
190. - Hey.
- Jack.Copy !req
191. - Jack, hey, uh, listen, I'm,
I'm sorry I didn't say much.Copy !req
192. Uh, this is just all pretty new to me.Copy !req
193. - Are you feeling okay?Copy !req
194. - Huh? What?
- You're really, really sweaty.Copy !req
195. - Oh, yeah. I sweat when I'm nervous.Copy !req
196. Uh, anyway, l-l-like I said,
my, my son, um, Victor,Copy !req
197. he, he just came out recently,
which, I mean, you know,Copy !req
198. he's a basketball player,Copy !req
199. so I guess I never really saw that com—Copy !req
200. I— Not that that has anything
to do with who a person wants to—Copy !req
201. - Listen, I have to get
back to the office.Copy !req
202. Maybe we could grab a beer later tonight.Copy !req
203. I know that these meetings
can be overwhelming, so...Copy !req
204. - Jack, that, that would be great,
actually.Copy !req
205. And I, I, I promise to change my shirtCopy !req
206. into something... yeah.
- Okay.Copy !req
207. - Less moist.
- Moist.Copy !req
208. I hate that word.
Yeah. Don't...Copy !req
209. - I don't know why I said that.Copy !req
210. All right. I'll see ya.
- Okay.Copy !req
211. All right, Grizzlies.
Bring it in. Gather up!Copy !req
212. Welcome to the first practice
of the season.Copy !req
213. I hope you all had a good summer.Copy !req
214. I rented the cutest little lake house.Copy !req
215. And then I got a staph infection
on day one. I...Copy !req
216. Went through me like a wildfire.Copy !req
217. I almost lost a finger. But I didn't.Copy !req
218. I didn't lose my pinky,Copy !req
219. and we're not gonna lose any games.
Right, guys?Copy !req
220. Sure.
Huh?Copy !req
221. All right, great. Pair up.
Let's run some passing drills.Copy !req
222. Pass it up.Copy !req
223. - Yo, Vic. You and me. Let's go.Copy !req
224. - All right, come on, now.Copy !req
225. Yeah, put that up, Vic!Copy !req
226. That's what I'm talkin' about!
Let's go!Copy !req
227. Whoa! Nicely done!Copy !req
228. Here we go!Copy !req
229. - That a way, Salazar!Copy !req
230. Take it!Copy !req
231. Yes! Attaboy, Victor!Copy !req
232. Good job!Copy !req
233. Oh, my God. Mia's already there.Copy !req
234. Wait. This is such girl code violation.
Section 348,Copy !req
235. chicks before dicks.Copy !req
236. - Do you happen to remember
how Hamlet ends?Copy !req
237. - Yeah. With a murder.Copy !req
238. Which is exactly
what's going to happen hereCopy !req
239. if you don't shut that laptop
and get ready.Copy !req
240. Felix, um,Copy !req
241. I'm not a "me" anymore. I'm a "we."Copy !req
242. And I'm really excited for us
to go to this party together.Copy !req
243. - "We," too, Lake. "We," too.Copy !req
244. I just need 30 minutes to learn
Mandarin for Chad Jacobson.Copy !req
245. - What the hell?Copy !req
246. I thought Coach was gonna
have him change somewhere else.Copy !req
247. Yeah, let's go.Copy !req
248. - I'm sorry.Copy !req
249. I thought they'd realize
that you're still just... you.Copy !req
250. You know?Copy !req
251. - Whoo! Yeah.Copy !req
252. - Don't I know you?Copy !req
253. You're Mia, right?
- Mmm-hmm.Copy !req
254. - I'm Derek.Copy !req
255. Your ex-boyfriend stole
my ex-boyfriend?Copy !req
256. - Right. Small world.Copy !req
257. - I thought that you were in high school.Copy !req
258. - I am.Copy !req
259. I just lied to impress a guy
who hasn't even shown up.Copy !req
260. Do you wanna play?Copy !req
261. - Uh, no. No, I'm good.Copy !req
262. But, uh, careful.Copy !req
263. That drink is lethal.Copy !req
264. It'll make you forget your own name.Copy !req
265. - Hey, which one of you frat boys
wants to get out-drunk by a chick?Copy !req
266. Whoa!Copy !req
267. All right, give me a ball.Copy !req
268. - I mean...Copy !req
269. This generation— I can't keep up.Copy !req
270. I can't keep up, man. Like...Copy !req
271. Last night I'm reading about pansexuals,Copy !req
272. and I'm like, what?Copy !req
273. Dios mio. What,
people can fall in love with bread?Copy !req
274. No...Copy !req
275. Yeah, but then I see,Copy !req
276. no, a pansexual is somebody
who is into all genders.Copy !req
277. - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I-I know. It can be a lot.Copy !req
278. - It is. And I'm scared.Copy !req
279. Every time I open up my mouth,Copy !req
280. I'm scared that I might say something
to make my son hate me.Copy !req
281. His mother's having
a hard time with the whole thing.Copy !req
282. It's made things between them
really strained, and...Copy !req
283. I don't want that for me and Victor.Copy !req
284. We've always been so close.Copy !req
285. Before Simon told me he was gay,Copy !req
286. I had a whole idea for his life.Copy !req
287. The kind of girls he would date,Copy !req
288. the kind of advice
that I would give, and...Copy !req
289. When he came out, I realized that
those were just my hopes, not his,Copy !req
290. and I had to let 'em go.Copy !req
291. And once I did...Copy !req
292. Yeah, I realized that
there are a lot of waysCopy !req
293. that you could be a man.Copy !req
294. You know what I mean?Copy !req
295. - That makes sense.
- Yeah.Copy !req
296. - But, I mean, I don't even know
where to begin with him.Copy !req
297. I think about sitting down
to talk to him, and...Copy !req
298. I just get stuck.
- Yeah.Copy !req
299. Well, you know,
not every conversation with VictorCopy !req
300. has to be about his sexuality.
- Mm-hmm.Copy !req
301. - So what did you guys talk about
before he came out?Copy !req
302. - Sports. Yeah.
Sports has always been our thing.Copy !req
303. - Well, there you go. Start there.Copy !req
304. - Mmm.
- And once you start talking,Copy !req
305. once he realizes that you're still
a soft place for him to land,Copy !req
306. you'll be surprised where
the conversation might go.Copy !req
307. - Hmm.Copy !req
308. - Okay. I'm going to go.Copy !req
309. - Yeah. Yeah, no, that's a good idea.Copy !req
310. Uh, you know, I'm almost done,
so I'm right behind you.Copy !req
311. - No, I'm...Copy !req
312. I'm going to go alone.Copy !req
313. - What? Why?Copy !req
314. - Because I told you
tonight is important to me.Copy !req
315. More important than you making moneyCopy !req
316. to buy some DJ BB-8 thing.Copy !req
317. We'll talk tomorrow.
Just go home, Felix.Copy !req
318. - I can't.
- Why?Copy !req
319. - Because our internet is turned off.Copy !req
320. And I can't finish
what's due tomorrow without it.Copy !req
321. - Wait, why was your internet shut off?Copy !req
322. - I was lying...Copy !req
323. about the DJ equipment.Copy !req
324. My mom stopped going to work.Copy !req
325. She can't.Copy !req
326. - Okay. Um...Copy !req
327. Because of her manic depression?
- Yeah.Copy !req
328. Yeah. She's, um, she's been
depressed for a while now.Copy !req
329. She barely gets out of bed most days.Copy !req
330. We need the extra cash.
Help us pay our bills.Copy !req
331. - Uh, how long has this been going on?Copy !req
332. - This time, most of the summer.Copy !req
333. It's gonna be okay, all right?
I'll figure it out.Copy !req
334. I'll figure it out.Copy !req
335. - Okay.Copy !req
336. Hit me with a worksheet.Copy !req
337. I told you.Copy !req
338. I'm not a "me" anymore.Copy !req
339. I'm a "we."Copy !req
340. But "we" don't know Mandarin,
so hit me with something else.Copy !req
341. - Hey.Copy !req
342. How was practice?Copy !req
343. - Um, it was great at first.Copy !req
344. The, the guys were being
totally normal on the court.Copy !req
345. Uh, but then we got
into the locker room, and...Copy !req
346. I'm just so confused.Copy !req
347. Like, these guys
are supposed to be my friends.Copy !req
348. Why aren't you more upset about this?Copy !req
349. Like, you've been oddly quiet all day.Copy !req
350. - I, I mean, of course I'm upset.Copy !req
351. I'm just... I'm not surprised.Copy !req
352. Everyone thinks that coming out
is easy these days,Copy !req
353. but it's not.Copy !req
354. I mean, two days after I did,
my lab partner asked to switch desks.Copy !req
355. Said it's 'cause he couldn't
see the board from the back of the room,Copy !req
356. but everyone knew that was bullshit.Copy !req
357. And on top of everything,
you play sports,Copy !req
358. which is not exactly
the most evolved groupCopy !req
359. you could be a part of.Copy !req
360. - I don't know. Maybe I should just
change in the stupid extra office—Copy !req
361. - No. No, you're not doing that.Copy !req
362. You should be around people
who want you to be you.Copy !req
363. End of story.Copy !req
364. Uh-oh.
- What?Copy !req
365. - It's my ex.Copy !req
366. Texting about your ex.Copy !req
367. - Mia!Copy !req
368. Mia!Copy !req
369. Excuse me, do you mind
if I talk to my friend for a second?Copy !req
370. - Um, hello.Copy !req
371. I'm a woman with agency.Copy !req
372. You can ask me to talk to me.Copy !req
373. - I'm gonna go.
- Thanks.Copy !req
374. - You happy?Copy !req
375. - Come on.
Let's, let's take you back home.Copy !req
376. - Do you seriously think you can come hereCopy !req
377. and be my knight in shining armor?Copy !req
378. I'm a cool college kid at a
cool college party, and, um...Copy !req
379. - Okay, okay. Come on.
- Okay. Um...Copy !req
380. I do— I want to go home now.Copy !req
381. Not because you want me to.
Because I want to.Copy !req
382. Okay? Because I'm a woman with agency.Copy !req
383. - You told me that already.
But I'm telling you again.Copy !req
384. - Hey.
- Hey.Copy !req
385. - Uh, sorry I texted you so late.Copy !req
386. - That's okay.
I was up sneak-watching Euphoria.Copy !req
387. Then I googled
Zendaya red carpet looksCopy !req
388. and lost three hours of my life.Copy !req
389. - Ah. Well, we've all been there.Copy !req
390. - I'll grab my jacket
so we can go outside and talk.Copy !req
391. - Actually, uh, I don't need to talk.
I'm here to pay ya.Copy !req
392. Two-hundred dollars.Copy !req
393. - Wow. That was fast.Copy !req
394. - Yeah. I, uh, told Lake about my mom.Copy !req
395. And, uh, she helped me
with my homework hustle,Copy !req
396. so now I can pay the bills,
and give you this.Copy !req
397. - Oh. You told Lake everything?
- Yeah.Copy !req
398. Yeah, which I should have done
a long time ago.Copy !req
399. But, uh, you know,
it's good news for you, too, right?Copy !req
400. You don't have to spend
all that time listening to meCopy !req
