249. He's getting sloppy or he knows we're closing in on him,

250. - and this is his final spree. - Hey, Sarge,

251. Yates got a parking ticket back in 2004, three blocks from here.

252. Fin and Amaro are on the way.

253. Okay, flood the zone.

254. (Fin) Unis canvassed the block.

255. Neighbors saw a male, white, Yates' age and height,

256. follow a woman into this house.

257. Hit it.

258. NYPD!

259. Everybody down.

260. You can't just come in here like that.

261. - What's going on? - Where is she?

262. She? Who? What is this about?

263. - Ma'am—ma'am! - Where's Nadia?

264. I don't know.

265. Sergeant, back off, we got him.

266. Back off. Turn around.

267. - Ma'am, are you all right? - I'm fine.

268. We're having lunch. What is this?

269. - You know this guy? - Greg?

270. He's my fiancé.

271. Come on.

272. - Hey. - You got him?

273. - Where is he? - He's in with Rollins.

274. He still hasn't told us where Nadia is?

275. Nope. We could use a bad cop in there.

276. I don't know what happened to Nadia.

277. You don't know? You kidnapped her.

278. Kidnapped? No, she offered me a ride.

279. Have you really not heard from her?

280. No wonder you're so worried.

281. Cut the crap. Where is she?

282. Dr. Yates,

283. tell me how you and Nadia...

284. Hooked up?

285. Well, I was a bit on edge.

286. I knew the Chicago cops were after me.

287. I thought I should visit the station,

288. maybe clear the air,

289. but I met Nadia there and she thought that was a bad idea.

290. Mm-hmm, and she, uh, she offered you a ride?

291. Yes, she said she needed to get out of town,

292. but she didn't want to drive alone.

293. I don't know, I just went with it.

294. From what I know about you, you don't really act on impulse.

295. As a surgeon, right, you can't.

296. You have to be methodical, thoughtful.

297. Is this an interrogation or a date?

298. - She's getting him to talk. - He's jerking her around.

299. Give her some time.

300. He's been getting away with this for 20 years.

301. And he's not gonna cave. The girlfriend.

302. Greg and I have been involved on and off for 19 years.

303. We met while he was at medical school.

304. (Amaro) Right, at Duke. - Yes, I was a freshman.

305. We moved to New York together.

306. That's a long time.

307. When did you two get engaged?

308. Just today, actually.

309. He never wanted to commit. He's a bit of a rolling stone,

310. but that kind of worked for me too.

311. (Lindsay) Did you ever live together?

312. No, I guess we both needed our space.

313. Did you ever wonder why he needed his space?

314. He's a doctor. He's busy with his practice.

315. He needs to unwind.

316. He likes to take hikes. He rides his bike.

317. - He goes rock climbing. - Susie...

318. Greg Yates is not who you think he is.

319. Look, these girls went missing at Duke,

320. in New York,

321. New Orleans, Chicago.

322. Girls who were raped,

323. bludgeoned,

324. burned.

325. All while Greg was living in those cities.

326. Nadia looked at me like a father figure.

327. She said she couldn't deal with the responsibility

328. of being everyone's good girl,

329. that she needed to spread her wings.

330. Dr. Yates, you were the last one with her.

331. You knew her mindset.

332. What do you think happened to her?

333. A pretty girl like that looking to party in New York?

334. I mean, it kind of depends on

335. who she fell in with, doesn't it?

336. I mean, where...

337. do you think this person would take her?

338. Oh, um...

339. well, he would probably take her to a remote location

340. where he could do whatever he wanted to her.

341. And after that?

342. Maybe he would take her body to a special place.

343. A sacred place.

344. A place where he could visit her

345. every once in a while.

346. Maybe...

347. defile her again, you know.

348. I can't imagine what you're going through right now.

349. It must be horrible thinking about Nadia's last moments,

350. how she must have suffered.

351. Your lives must be a living hell

352. wondering if you're ever even going to find the body.

353. I'm going in.

354. Just let Amanda do her job.

355. No, no, that is just not possible.

356. This is where he was right before

357. he came to your apartment. Look at it.

358. He bludgeoned this girl to death,

359. and that one's brain damaged.

360. - You're lying to me. - Am I?

361. Susie, why do you think I'm here?

362. He kidnapped a girl in Chicago, and we tracked him here.

363. No.

364. Nadia. He has her.

365. She's my friend.

366. On the drive here,

367. he bought an ice pick

368. and a shovel at a rest stop with a stolen credit card.

369. - Here. - We found this in his car

370. along with her blood and his DNA.

371. Now I know you're lying. He was at the beach.

372. A special place he likes to go. He told me so.

373. He had sand in his shoes. That's why I asked him about it.

374. He said he had gone there to mediate.

375. He decided he was going to ask me to marry him

376. while sitting on that beach.

377. What beach, Susie?

378. Susie said Yates sometimes took her to the main beach

379. in the summers.

380. There's no bodies out here. Too public.

381. You're right, this place is mobbed in the summer.

382. Yates did speculate that the killer

383. liked to come back and visit.

384. Maybe they're both playing us.

385. Someplace sacred.

386. Search the woods.

387. - Hey. - Was it her?

388. No, some old bones, a skull.

389. (Rollins) We got thigh bones, pelvic bones, a hand—

390. - All complete decomp. - They've been there for years.

391. My God.

392. (Halstead) Hey, Sarge.

393. We got her.

394. I'm sorry.

395. No...

396. Cover her up.

397. - Nadia Decotis. - Yeah.

398. She's the one you worked with?

399. - Yeah. - I'm sorry.

400. She was raped and tortured and killed

401. in a car that Yates dumped in Upper Manhattan.

402. He must have stolen another car

403. to transport her to his burial ground.

404. Burial ground? How many others?

405. Seven remains so far—they're working through the night.

406. - They're still digging. - The bodies have been there

407. for years. It's down to skulls and bones.

408. We're looking at dental records.

409. Two hits so far.

410. - to any of them? - No. Yates usually

411. chooses his victims at random, okay?

412. He either burned the bodies or he buried them.

413. He never left evidence.

414. Not even with the two vics in Queens?

415. There's no blood from them on his clothes or on his body.

416. He must have changed his clothes, washed himself.

417. None of his DNA is in their apartment.

418. Can the vic who survived ID him?

419. Brain damage.

420. I got a State's Attorney standing by in Chicago.

421. We can try Yates for his last two victims there.

422. You mean the one he burned, along with any evidence?

423. Or the one who apparently died

424. while Yates was walking in the park

425. with one of your detectives,

426. along with your whole squad there to alibi him.

427. Hold on, Barba. This might be something.

428. Nadia Decotis was not random.

429. This was a screw you to Chicago PD.

430. Do we even have any evidence

431. that puts Yates in the car with her?

432. Yes. We have forensics,

433. and we have footage of him driving.

434. Not to mention he admits it.

435. She's our best case, Nadia Decotis.

436. Nadia Decotis would be horrified to find me on trial

437. for her murder.

438. She was someone I grew close to.

439. In light of the serious charges I'm facing,

440. I've decided it's in my best interest

441. to represent myself.

442. Dr. Yates, are you sure?

443. You are entitled to competent counsel,

444. and Ms. Crane is an experienced attorney.

445. She is, but with all due respect,

446. it's my life at stake, not hers.

447. Very well. Trial will proceed

448. with Ms. Crane staying on as co-counsel.

449. As those autopsy and crime scene photos show,

450. Nadia Decotis had been struck repeatedly by a heavy object

451. in the head and chest,

452. suffering traumatic wounds pre-mortem.

453. She was then strangled.

454. There are also ligature marks on her wrist and ankles

455. indicating she had been bound.

456. Were there any signs of sexual assault?

457. Wounds and tears to her vagina and rectum

458. indicating violent penetration.

459. I see, thank you.

460. Doctor, forgive me, I am new at this.

461. But those wounds of the vagina and rectum,

462. are those the kinds of things

463. you might see in the body of an active prostitute?

464. - To some extent, but not— - To some extent.

465. Nothing further.

466. (Lindsay) Nadia loved her job.

467. She had really turned her life around.

468. She was studying criminology to become a police officer.

469. - That was her dream. - Her dream.

470. Did she ever tell you she wanted to throw it away

471. - and move to New York? - Absolutely not.

472. When she disappeared, I knew something had happened to her.

473. Objection. What the witness thinks she knows

474. can't be evidence, can it?

475. Sustained.

476. Detective Lindsay, when did you next see Ms. Decotis?

477. When we found her body in a shallow grave.

478. So something had happened to her.

479. I'm very sorry.

480. Detective Lindsay, did you meet Ms. Decotis

481. through friends, at a party,

482. a police benefit for widows and orphans—

483. - Your Honor— - Ask your question, Dr. Yates.

484. Well, how did you meet Ms. Decotis?

485. I arrested her.

486. For what?

487. She was working as an escort.

488. As a prostitute.

489. Was she on drugs?

490. She was addicted to heroin when I arrested her.

491. She really struggled for a time, but when she was ready,

492. she called me, and I brought her to rehab.

493. She had been clean and sober ever since.

494. - Are you sure? - Yes.

495. We became roommates.

496. I saw her every day for a year.

497. You sound very committed to her recovery.

498. I can see how you'd hate to think

499. that your little rescue project failed.

500. - Objection. - Sustained.

501. - You're done, Dr. Yates. - Okeydoke.

502. I tried my best, but he just made her sound—

503. Erin, it's not on you.

504. You just gonna let him get away with smearing Nadia like that?

505. There's a limit to how far he can go.

506. When he exceeds it, I'll object.

507. - You'll object? - Is there a problem?

508. There shouldn't be.

509. He's a murderer and a rapist.

510. We all know that, but no offense

511. to your legal acumen, the jury isn't privy to what we know.

512. They all see the same charming man

513. whose smile lured dozens of women to their deaths.

514. Liv, we need to prep. This is going to be hard on you.

515. I'm fine, we went over it. Just give me a second, okay?

516. Hey, maybe you don't want to be in there.

517. Yeah, I do.

518. A forensic exam found DNA from Ms. Decotis

519. and from the defendant in Detective Lindsay's car.

520. There was also blood from Ms. Decotis.

521. When you questioned the defendant about that car,

522. - what did he say? - He claimed that Ms. Decotis

523. invited him to drive with her here from Chicago.

524. Did he offer any explanation

525. for the presence of her blood in her car?

526. No, he did not.

527. He did, however, say he was sure that she must have suffered.

528. No doubt.

529. Thank you, Sergeant Benson.

530. You don't like me, do you, Sergeant?

531. - Objection. Relevance. - Sustained.

532. Dr. Yates, confine your questions to the case.

533. Okay, the case.

534. Sergeant Benson, you recently went to Chicago

535. to investigate another rape, murder, and arson, didn't you?

536. Yes, I did.

537. A murder similar to a case of yours from a dozen years ago

538. - in New York? - That's correct.

539. And you were looking for one suspect

540. in both of these murders.

541. Yes. You were that suspect.

542. You say that today, Sergeant,

543. but before I was arrested,

544. you had another suspect in mind, didn't you?

545. I was consulting with Chicago PD.

546. We were pursuing many leads.

547. Oh, I see, and... from your investigative notes,

548. was one of these leads a Dr. Will Halstead?

549. His name did come up.

550. Really? Well, why did SVU speak with him?

551. Because he knew another woman who had gone missing.

552. And did you suspect that the murderer

553. you were looking for was involved in that case?

554. Yes.

555. And then, Dr. Halstead shows up in Chicago

556. He even works in the same hospital as the Chicago victim.

557. Yes, that's why I went and spoke with Dr. Halstead.

558. He was ruled out by an alibi.

559. I see, and that alibi was confirmed, not by you,

560. but by the Intelligence Unit of the Chicago police,

561. isn't that right?

562. Yes.

563. A unit of the Chicago police

564. that includes Detective Jay Halstead,

565. who just happens to be the brother of Dr. Will Halstead.

566. Yes.

567. The suspect's brother conveniently cleared

568. your prime suspect,

569. and you let him go on his merry way

570. while looking for someone else to charge with murder.

571. Dr. Halstead was cleared because he didn't do it.

572. Interesting.

573. Did you ask him where he was

574. at the time Nadia Decotis went missing?

575. No, we did not.

576. I guess you didn't want to know.

577. - Objection. - Withdrawn.

578. No more questions.

579. My brother was in Chicago that day.

580. We could find a dozen witnesses.

581. Then the trial becomes about your brother and not Yates.

582. - He's smart. - He's scum.

583. He knows what he's doing.

584. He gets off on torture, even in court.

585. I ran into Nadia outside the police station.

586. She warned me about the Chicago PD.

587. She said they were looking for a patsy.

588. And that's when you decided to drive to New York

589. with Ms. Decotis?

590. No, I made that decision

591. when she told me what they were doing to her.

592. Which was what?

593. Her boss there, Sergeant Voight,

594. was making her have sex with him.

595. Objection, hearsay.

596. It's key to my defense, your Honor.

597. I wasn't kidnapping her. I was trying to help her escape.

598. If it goes to your state of mind, I'll allow it.

599. Your testimony can only reflect what you saw or experienced.

600. Why did you get in the car with Nadia Decotis, Dr. Yates?

601. I believed Sergeant Voight was raping her.

602. She wanted to get away, I helped her drive.

603. She was distraught at the abuse that she had suffered.

604. She wanted to get high. I tried to talk her out of it.

605. - Did you succeed? - Oh, I wish.

606. But as soon as we got to New York,

607. she said that she was going to get a fix.

608. - Objection. Hearsay. - Sustained.

609. What was your last impression of Nadia Decotis

610. based on what you witnessed?

611. She had a look in her eyes...

612. a look that I recognized from my medical practice.

613. She was jonesing.

614. I... I was afraid that she would prostitute herself

615. to get the money to buy heroin.

616. After all, that is the life she knew.

617. She got out of the car.

618. I never saw her again.

619. Thank you, sir.

620. So, Nadia Decotis told you she decided to flee Chicago?

621. - That's right. - Did she happen to tell you

622. why she decided to go at that very moment,

623. leaving behind $2,000 in a savings account,

624. all her clothes and other belongings,

625. the new friends she'd made, the Narcotics Anonymous group

626. she'd been attending faithfully?

627. She was desperate to get out.

628. - She didn't have her own car. - That's not the question.

629. She was supposed to go to a birthday party but she—

630. - Your Honor. - Jury will disregard.

631. Dr. Yates, limit your testimony

632. to answering only the questions you are asked.

633. Did Ms. Decotis know that CPD considered you its main suspect

634. in a series of brutal rape/murders?

635. Yes, but she also knew—

636. She knew her entire squad was looking for you,

637. and yet she asked you, of all people,

638. to drive halfway across the country with her?

639. Actually, withdrawn.

640. Nothing further.

641. Redirect, your Honor.

642. I'll allow.

643. Dr. Yates, do you have anything more to add?

644. Yes. My impression of Nadia Decotis' emotional state

645. when I got in the car with her

646. was that she was under Sergeant Voight's command.

647. She was traumatized by him tying her up—

648. Thank you, Doctor. Nothing further.

649. And brutally forcing himself inside of her, again and again.

650. Nothing further.

651. Thank you, Doctor.

652. Counselor, good job.

653. - Did you see what we saw? - The real Greg Yates?

654. I just hope the jury saw it.

655. They haven't yet. They will.

656. Dr. Warner, I just have a few more questions

657. about Ms. Decotis' injuries.

658. Your Honor, we've already heard from this M.E.

659. The defendant alleged the victim was a prostitute.

660. I'm entitled to refute.

661. Yes, you are. Proceed.

662. Um...

663. Did you find evidence in Ms. Decotis' body

664. of multiple sexual partners?

665. No, there was no DNA,

666. and the condom lubricant I found in her vagina and rectum

667. was the same brand.

668. So she was assaulted in both places by the same man.

669. It's likely.

670. Judging from the healing process,

671. both penetrations occurred around the same time.

672. Did you make a full catalogue of Ms. Decotis' injuries

673. as shown in these autopsy photos?

674. Yes. It was quite extensive.

675. Thank you, Doctor.

676. Cross-examine?

677. - No. - Yes.

678. Which is it?

679. Uh, yes, your Honor, I, uh...

680. I do have a few questions.

681. May I examine those photos?

682. Absolutely.

683. Dr. Yates, your questions?

684. Yes... yes.

685. Uh, Doctor,

686. could Ms. Decotis' injuries

687. have been caused by her prostitution?

688. It's unlikely.

689. She was savaged.

690. Savaged, you say. How so?

691. In addition to the blunt trauma and strangulation,

692. there were cuts on her nipples and external genitalia.

693. And her anal sphincter, was—was that torn?

694. Yes, it was.

695. And these injuries, though not fatal,

696. they would have been painful?

697. Very.

698. She died a slow death.

699. How long did she survive after the first attack started?

700. 30 minutes, maybe longer.

701. And she would have been in agony all through it?

702. Mr. Barba, not to put words in your mouth,

703. but I'm willing to entertain an objection if you have one.

704. I'm fine, your Honor.

705. Doctor, was she in a lot of pain?

706. Yes. I'm sure she was.

707. Were there signs of struggle?

708. Yes.

709. The skin was torn around the ligature marks.

710. What goes through a victim's head in their final moments?

711. Your Honor, may I please speak with my client?

712. - No, I'm not done here. - A short recess.

713. Sit down.

714. Back to Nadia. Would the terror,

715. the fear, have flooded her with adrenaline?

716. I can't answer that.

717. Would she have awareness

718. of what was going on?

719. Would she understand

720. that these were the final moments

721. of her life?

722. Come on, Doctor. We are both medical people.

723. Use your knowledge!

724. Or...

725. Or don't.

726. Members of the jury, have you reached a verdict?

727. We have, Your Honor.

728. On the charge of rape and sodomy in the first degree,

729. we find the defendant, Gregory Yates,

730. guilty.

731. On the charge of murder in the first degree,

732. we find the defendant guilty.

733. Dr. Yates, you will remain in custody pending sentencing.

734. Members of the jury,

735. the State of New York thanks you for your service.

736. Court is adjourned.

737. Nadia was family. We'll miss her.

738. To Nadia.

739. - To Nadia. - To Nadia.

740. Didn't see me coming, did you?

741. That's because you dropped your guard for a second.

742. I could end this right now, just...

743. snap your neck.

744. Strangle you.

745. You know better than anyone how quickly this can end.

746. You know what I figure?

747. What's the hurry?

748. I want you to feel what you made others feel.

749. The pain.

750. The fear.

751. Looking over your shoulder when you eat,

752. take a leak,

753. sleeping with both eyes open.

754. Someone will do to you what you did to Nadia.

755. It's coming.
