Law & Order 1x13

1. by two separate yet equally important groups:

2. the police, who investigate crime

3. and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.

4. These are their stories.

5. The computer age.

6. They made mistakes before computers.

7. Mixing up a homicidal maniac

8. and a turnstile jumper?

9. "Bruno Walker" sounds like "Brutus Walker."

10. Yeah, only Brutus carries bigger guns.

11. Here, 2330 Saint Nicholas, apartment 4-D, Mills.

12. My money says we get nothing out of the girlfriend.

13. Really?

14. Where's the first place you'd go you get released early?

15. Plus, rumor has it, she's been hooking out of her apartment.

16. Oh, how entrepreneurial.

17. While her man's in the slam.

18. Officer Rennick, Miss Sandoval, you know this gentleman?

19. He came from Walker's girlfriend's apartment.

20. I never seen this guy.

21. Well, it ain't Walker, Brutus or Bruno.

22. You guys, take the roof.

23. Come on, upstairs.

24. This where your friend took a flyer?

25. He was the super's friend.

26. Hey, we're all friends here, honey.

27. What the hell happened?

28. Brutus grabs him by the neck and throws him out.

29. Don't even think about leaving.

30. Rennick?

31. Sandoval.

32. Oh, my God.

33. He's still alive.

34. Call the paramedics!

35. Sandoval!

36. Sandoval!

37. 10-13, 10-13, Police officer shot!

38. Police officer shot!

39. Captioning sponsored by NBC/Universal

40. Come on, people. Stay behind the tape.

41. My first week on the job, I come home

42. and my wife has The Telegram open to this item:

43. "Cop killed in Brooklyn outside a candy store."

44. Telegram? There used to be a lot of newspapers in New York.

45. Then they all started dying off.

46. Now, it's the cops.

47. How many this year so far?

48. Thirteen.

49. Let's keep it clear here, folks.

50. Body bag coming through here.

51. Come on, get back. Step back. Come on.

52. They couldn't resuscitate him.

53. You guys go ahead.

54. I'll be over in a minute.

55. You remember The Telegram?

56. What?

57. Nothing.

58. I saw the stretcher.

59. It happens.

60. Yeah.

61. Anything pop on Walker?

62. You believe in miracles?

63. I pray for them.

64. I pray some cop finds him in an alley

65. and can save the taxpayers the trouble of a trial.

66. If it was you and Walker in an alley

67. and no one else was there—

68. he didn't have a gun

69. and was going to give himself up?

70. I'd shoot him in the face.

71. You want the name of Walker's second-grade teacher?

72. First girl who let him lift her skirt?

73. His mother's cousin's friend's dry cleaner?

74. It's all here.

75. Turn the other cheek.

76. You believe in that?

77. Yeah, twice a year, Christmas and Easter, at church.

78. You hear Profaci?

79. What are you taking? A poll?

80. You agree with him?

81. Sandoval's supposed to meet us on 103rd street.

82. Talk about cold.

83. She loses a partner...

84. Hey, hey, hey, don't hold that against her.

85. Everyone deals with it differently.

86. They crossed over from that roof.

87. Walker?

88. Couldn't see him.

89. It was dark.

90. Maybe you saw some muzzle flashes, hmm?

91. Or a light in one of the stairwell doors being opened?

92. I guess I was looking the wrong way.

93. My call is Walker took these stairs down.

94. Now you and Rennick

95. when you came onto the roof,

96. were you together or did you split apart?

97. How many citations for bravery do you have, Logan?

98. I've got six.

99. No one's questioning your courage, Sandoval.

100. Except you.

101. Back off, Mike.

102. Let's go check with the super.

103. How do I know what goes on

104. in the middle of the night on the roof?

105. Do you guys know how many people

106. have died in this building over the years?

107. Mr. Jost...

108. One body we discovered because it had stinked.

109. Another— a baby— gets pushed down the incinerator chute.

110. These people are animals.

111. Look, could you help me out a little bit here?

112. No one likes it.

113. You don't. I don't.

114. The company that pays my salary don't.

115. But one thing they don't like neither,

116. they don't like it when the property

117. doesn't get taken care of.

118. Yo, Jack! Two people got killed here last night

119. and one of them was a cop.

120. So?

121. Never could figure out what all the fuss was about

122. when a cop gets killed.

123. You guys get paid to deal with scum.

124. What the hell do you think's

125. going to happen to you you do that?

126. Two weeks, three weeks from now, you'll be gone

127. but I'll still be here.

128. And so will the company that pays my salary.

129. Supplemented by a little procuring, of course.

130. Procuring? I don't know what that is, but you can't...

131. He doesn't know what the word means.

132. How about pimping, Jost?

133. Like in the Cassie Mills Elevator Service, Incorporated?

134. Just s soon as I finish cleaning up here

135. I got plenty of time.

136. It's a pretty nice jacket for somebody to throw away.

137. The kids hang around back here, making a mess.

138. They leave me alone.

139. I leave them alone. Know what I mean?

140. Someone left it last night?

141. Yeah.

142. Red.

143. Pass the ball, man. Pass the ball.

144. A wise ass.

145. Yo.

146. Hey, listen up, anyone recognize this jacket?

147. See, folks, what we got here is an entertainment situation.

148. Me and my colleagues over here are the entertainers.

149. And you folks, well, you're the entertainees.

150. Like Indiana Jones over here.

151. See, if you stop to watch baby bro

152. I figure you've been entertained, am I right?

153. So you might want to become part of the paying audience,

154. if you get my drift.

155. Baby brother needs a new pair of shoes.

156. Hey, hey, Red, Red.

157. I don't take food stamps.

158. I'll be right back.

159. You work this spot last night, Red?

160. Yeah, eight 82nd avenue.

161. Made some good money, too.

162. You can ask the lady in the restaurant.

163. She'll tell you.

164. After that?

165. Home.

166. But you stopped off

167. on 103rd street to blow a little weed, right?

168. And guess what— you left your jacket there.

169. That used to be my jacket.

170. And now?

171. It's my ex.

172. She kept missing rehearsal.

173. So I had to throw her out of the act, you know?

174. Guess what, Red.

175. You get to take us to her.

176. When we split up...

177. Kept it as a souvenir?

178. Oh, this old stuff.

179. Not so old.

180. You were wearing it last night.

181. On 103rd street and Saint Nicholas.

182. Yeah, back of #70.

183. Don't touch me!

184. Don't you touch me.

185. I don't let no man touch me.

186. Where did you get the gun, Revina?

187. I... I found it.

188. Take it easy.

189. I found it back of the apartment.

190. It's okay, Revina.

191. And I took it so no one would mess with me.

192. No one would ever mess with me again.

193. Put the gun down slowly.

194. It's okay.

195. Put it down slowly.

196. Nobody's going to mess with you.

197. Put it down.

198. So, ballistics says Rennick was killed with the same.32

199. That we took away from Revina Price.

200. And the gouge on the barrel happened

201. when the gun hit the pavement from the height.

202. Maybe.

203. You hate the Mets, right?

204. Almost as much as you hate the Yankees.

205. We don't agree about a lot of things.

206. All right, so, potahtoes, potatoes.

207. So, why do we agree

208. that something doesn't add up here?

209. All right, Walker shoots Rennick,

210. throws the gun off the roof.

211. How about Walker drops the gun

212. as he's walking down the fire escape?

213. Carmen— Greevey.

214. I want you to run some serial numbers

215. on a.32 S & W.

216. I keep hearing the zipper on Rennick's body bag.

217. Great. A 15-Year-old high school girl.

218. Some neighborhood kid.

219. She says she picked it up in back of the building.

220. Max, can I see you for a second?

221. Yeah.

222. The girl ever use guns? She got a record?

223. No, and she's got no motive to shoot a cop.

224. The problem is

225. her prints are on the gun, Brutus Walker's aren't.

226. So Walker tosses a guy out the window,

227. runs up to the roof, shoots Rennick

228. and then wipes the gun clean before he drops it?

229. I don't know. It was cold.

230. Maybe he was wearing gloves.

231. How well do you shoot a gun with gloves on?

232. The serial number on the gun that shot Rennick?

233. Sold by Jovino's Gun Shop, West 17th, off Ninth.

234. Tell us about the robbery.

235. What did they take?

236. They took four pump shotguns and eight handguns.

237. Is this one of them?

238. Right make. Right model.

239. Looks pretty beat up, though.

240. Somebody wanted to see if it could bounce.

241. You got the serial number?

242. I got the serial numbers, too.

243. Old habit.

244. I used to be on the job before this happened.

245. The Three-Nine.

246. Did you ever work the South Bronx?

247. No, but I worked The Rug.

248. Brooklyn?

249. Ooh, that precinct was a real hellhole.

250. Late '60s.

251. Same here in the South Bronx.

252. They used to throw stuff at you from the windows on slow days.

253. Do you remember that coach that we used to have back then?

254. Hard to dodge in those tents

255. but thank God for the slow days

256. because on the days that weren't slow...

257. That what happened?

258. No, I was on foot patrol.

259. I was going down the subway to use the can in winter

260. and I hit an icy step.

261. Broken back?

262. Yeah.

263. Thanks for your help, Ross.

264. 20% off, anybody with a badge.

265. Boy, that is rough.

266. Yeah.

267. I don't think I'd make it like that in a wheelchair.

268. I'd rather go quick.

269. Like Rennick?

270. And what happens to the family?

271. Cassie, we need some answers

272. about Brutus.

273. I ain't talking no more about Brutus.

274. If he bothers you, you call us.

275. And what?

276. You meet me at the hospital?

277. You cops— you always saying, "cooperate, cooperate.

278. I'll make sure nothing happens to you."

279. And then, either you catch the guy or you don't.

280. You put him away or you don't.

281. And then it don't matter

282. because he gets out or he got friends.

283. Unless you are willing to walk two steps behind me

284. for the rest of my life, you can't make me safe.

285. No one's ever safe, Cassie.

286. You know, when I was a kid

287. my mama— she say— you do right and you be okay.

288. Well, I guess when you a kid, you got to believe that

289. or else you won't never grow up.

290. That don't look like none of Brutus' guns.

291. He like big ones.

292. Big ones.

293. Are you sure that's not his?

294. 'Cause you said he had a lot of guns.

295. Brutus had more guns than he had shoes

296. and, honey, he had shoes.

297. But if you want to be sure, go ask his sister.

298. More like his mama.

299. Anytime something went wrong, Brutus ran to her.

300. I guess even Brutus gets scared sometimes.

301. Brutus never had no trouble.

302. It was everyone who met him

303. had the trouble.

304. No. He doesn't have a gun.

305. He never did.

306. So he just pushed that slug into Cruz with his thumb?

307. She's not going to change.

308. Her brother's a saint.

309. In another hundred years

310. he'll be stuck on people's dashboards.

311. I got nothing to say.

312. Well, in case you change your mind...

313. No, I don't need that,

314. 'cause I ain't never going to see you guys again.

315. Yes, you are.

316. When you bury your cop-killer brother.

317. Listen good, my man.

318. When we nail Brutus and find out

319. you could have helped us and didn't

320. we'll be back and you'll go down for conspiracy.

321. Maybe accessory after the fact.

322. Brutus showed up at the store

323. right after he got loose from Rikers.

324. Made some calls.

325. I told Mavis to send him back, but she gave him her car keys.

326. I don't see how you can say Segovia and Eric Clapton

327. in the same breath.

328. Sandoval, hey, how you doing?

329. Take off the kid gloves, Greevey.

330. I'm not that fragile.

331. Hey, ease up, all right?

332. He's just asking you how you feel.

333. I can handle what I got to handle, okay?

334. You know, if you didn't just...

335. Easy, easy. If I didn't what, Logan?

336. If I didn't just lose my partner?

337. If I weren't in mourning?

338. Spit it out.

339. Hey, Sandoval.

340. Okay, I don't like you.

341. I didn't like you before Rennick was killed

342. and his being dead doesn't change that.

343. In fact...

344. What? If it had been Greevey, you'd be red-eyed and weepy?

345. No you wouldn't.

346. You'd be showing everyone how tough you are,

347. that you can handle it.

348. but because I'm a woman, if I'm not sobbing,

349. you think it doesn't hurt.

350. You know, I'm just as much of a cop as you are, Logan,

351. and I am just as tough as you are.

352. And I got a dead partner

353. and my feelings about that are my own business.

354. Ask your partner.

355. Way I heard it, he was no barrel of laughs

356. when his partner bought it.

357. You lost a partner?

358. That was a long time ago.

359. Hey, hey, Max, wait a minute.

360. You didn't even mention it.

361. It wasn't relevant.

362. It was a long time ago.

363. He didn't observe procedure at a traffic stop.

364. Went over to the driver's window—

365. bammo.

366. That's all she wrote.

367. That's crap, Simpson.

368. I may'm not be as eloquent as Sergeant Greevey

369. but I'm afraid I'd have to agree with his assessment.

370. Walker thinks we got nothing better to do

371. than accuse him of shooting Rennick

372. so that we can execute him on sight?

373. Give me a break.

374. You know as well as I do

375. Walker's a dead man.

376. Hey, if he stays on the street, you're right.

377. If he's ready to surrender, we'll make sure he's safe.

378. He'll surrender if you give him immunity.

379. Immunity?

380. Why don't we give him a pension?

381. In exchange for information.

382. Rennick's pension.

383. He says he didn't kill Rennick.

384. Right, right.

385. The bullet in Rennick's neck and Rennick's death,

386. are just a coincidence, huh?

387. I may not know where he is,

388. or what he did or did not do, Detective,

389. but I do know what he told me on the telephone.

390. You want to make the deal, fine.

391. You don't, I'll communicate it to my client.

392. We're not in the habit of making blind deals

393. with cop-killers, Mr. Simpson. Good day.

394. And if it hadn't been a cop,

395. what would your decision be then?

396. Think about it.

397. Well?

398. Walker's driving around in his sister's car.

399. We called in a CB.

400. Walker's brother-in-law, Ray,

401. says he was talking on the phone.

402. I'm gonna need a subpoena to get those phone records.

403. What do you think about what Simpson said?

404. What?

405. That if it hadn't been a cop shot

406. would we be more likely to make a deal?

407. It was a cop.

408. Just go check the phone records.

409. See who he called, okay?

410. Laneer!

411. Very photogenic, Laneer.

412. You look just like your mug shots.

413. Even from the back.

414. Sergeant Greevey, Detective Logan.

415. I must have owed money in a previous life.

416. This ain't the Borscht Belt, Laneer.

417. Save the shtick.

418. The name Brutus Walker strike your funny bone, Laneer?

419. Can't say that it does.

420. Wrong answer.

421. Phone company says he called you from his sister's house.

422. I told him I couldn't do a thing for him.

423. You're still tap dancing, Kevin.

424. Man, you think I'm crazy?

425. I got four more months on parole.

426. I got a good job.

427. I'm happy on the outside.

428. I'm happy you're happy.

429. Do you want to bug my phone?

430. Go ahead.

431. You want to toss my place? Be my guest.

432. We got to take this call. Go on.

433. The car is registered to Walker's sister.

434. I double-checked it.

435. That's a two-base hit.

436. If Walker shows up, we got a home run.

437. Spotted it two hours ago.

438. No one's come near it.

439. Call in for a surveillance request.

440. Schermerhorn and Sullivan.

441. Wait a minute, wait a minute.

442. Sullivan and Brent.

443. Laneer's parole officer.

444. Said he works in a park at Sullivan and Brent.

445. That's right around the corner, next block.

446. We may have batted this one out of the park.

447. Call in for backup, a lot of backup.

448. No lights, no sirens.

449. Sector Adam calling Central K.

450. Quitting time, Brutus!

451. Nice disguise, though.

452. ( sighs ) You want me to run,

453. so you can shoot me and be a hero.

454. Disappointed?

455. Not yet, Walker.

456. Not yet.

457. We've charged Walker

458. with throwing Ramos out of Cassie Mill's window.

459. She's cooperating, and with her testimony,

460. I'm pushing for an early court date,

461. even though Walker's lawyer will try to stall.

462. Yeah, did you read a paper this morning?

463. The Times. Times, huh?

464. Well, I've read four.

465. They hardly mentioned the flying Ramos.

466. Paul, tell him who they mentioned.

467. Rennick. Rennick. Rennick.

468. New Yorkers don't always love their cops

469. but they hate the people who kill them.

470. I want him convicted.

471. Let's slow down and do it right.

472. The press starts chewing on your heels, blame me.

473. Yeah. Starts chewing, huh?

474. It's a cop-killer we're talking about.

475. We let him walk,

476. I'll be deboned, butterflied, and flambéed.

477. I want this off the front page.

478. The Rennick case is going to take time to prepare.

479. Take time? That's a good euphemism.

480. All right, then it's going to take a lot of luck.

481. Lacking any evidence,

482. I'd say that was an optimistic assessment.

483. We've got Sandoval's statement.

484. That the roof was dark,

485. that they were shot at from ambush,

486. that she never saw clearly enough

487. to return any fire,

488. and that she didn't even see Walker's escape route.

489. Oh, I never said we could prove Walker was on the roof.

490. Why, Detective?

491. Because Brutus Walker was Cistal's cell mate.

492. Now, what did Cistal have when he was arrested?

493. Suspect had in his possession

494. four shotguns and seven handguns.

495. All of which were traced to Ross's gun store.

496. But Ross says there were eight handguns

497. stolen from his shop.

498. And when my husband reported the fender-bender he was in

499. to the insurance company,

500. he threw in the broken light

501. from six months before.

502. Ross has no reason to lie.

503. He even had the serial number of the eighth gun.

504. Just like the one that killed Rennick.

505. I know.

506. Are you planning

507. to charge Walker in this lifetime?

508. Maybe I should rephrase that.

509. 'Cause a lifetime in this city can be pretty short,

510. especially if you're a cop.

511. You think a badge makes one life

512. more valuable than another, Trent?

513. Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do.

514. All Brutus Walker wants is the opportunity

515. to speak with you.

516. Really? A discussion of Fifth Amendment rights?

517. Get serious, Stone.

518. How serious do you want it?

519. I am not interested in making any deal.

520. Hey, look, I'm just Walker's messenger.

521. Really?

522. Then don't call me

523. until his lawyer wants to get serious.

524. I'm going to show you something that may belong

525. to your ex-cell mate, Mr. Walker.

526. Do you recognize it?

527. It's a gun.

528. Very good, Cistal.

529. Can you spell "gun"?

530. Sure.

531. D-e-a-l.

532. Maybe we ought to trade seats.

533. I hear yours is getting a little hot lately.

534. If I were you,

535. I'd indict Brutus Walker like yesterday.

536. You passed the spelling test.

537. Obviously, you read the newspapers.

538. Can you count?

539. Part of the haul you took from Ross's shop.

540. You took eight guns.

541. You were picked up with seven.

542. It was that new math.

543. Let me guess.

544. I'll bet this is a ballistics report

545. that says the bullet that killed that cop

546. came from this gun.

547. And I'll bet you're going to ask me

548. if I sold Brutus that gun.

549. I can solve your problem and my problem all at once.

550. You just tell me

551. when and where I sold Walker that gun.

552. My guess is that you and I

553. won't be talking to each other about this case.

554. You're missing a bet, Stone.

555. I can give you whatever you need.

556. I don't think so.

557. Cistal's arrest 49s.

558. When the guns were recovered from Cistal's apartment,

559. all except our.32,

560. Rennick was one of the search party.

561. Was Sandoval there?

562. No, they weren't partnered up then.

563. Eight to five

564. Rennick helped himself to the gun.

565. Why?

566. It's untraceable.

567. A lot of old-timers carry drop pieces.

568. If they shoot someone, they say they had a gun

569. and they can't find it,

570. so they drop untraceable iron on them.

571. Up in Harlem once, they found some stiff

572. with six guns underneath him.

573. ( chuckles ) So what are you saying?

574. Rennick shot himself,

575. then dropped the.32 to implicate Walker?

576. I don't know what I'm saying.

577. No, that wasn't one of Pete's guns.

578. This is important, Mrs. Rennick.

579. He only had two.

580. His on-duty and one for off-duty.

581. A lot of cops keep an unofficial weapon.

582. No one minds it, really,

583. and a lot of wives don't even know about it.

584. I knew everything about Pete. You did?

585. He talked to you a lot about the job, huh?

586. So?

587. These are great.

588. I have a few myself.

589. But this, this television...

590. this is nice.

591. It's expensive though.

592. Pete was always a good provider.

593. He always took the maximum overtime.

594. Who was on duty

595. when Rennick's locker was opened?

596. Me.

597. Find anything unusual?

598. Like what?

599. Rennick did his job.

600. He never complained.

601. And he always paid for his own cup of coffee.

602. Cragen's got the complete list.

603. Thanks.

604. I'll tell you one thing about Rennick.

605. What's that?

606. He didn't believe in plea bargains.

607. Sandoval?

608. Check the duty roster.

609. You got a new partner. Officer Sandoval,

610. I'm Paul Robinette from the DA's office.

611. I tried to reach you at home.

612. Yeah, I got your message.

613. Lou Bridges, my lawyer from the PBA

614. tells me not to talk to anyone

615. without him being there.

616. Says that includes the DA

617. Want to talk, clear it through him.

618. Am I missing something here?

619. Aren't we on the same side?

620. I got to change for roll call.

621. Look, Officer...

622. What, are you deaf or just stupid?

623. I told you, talk to Bridges!

624. Why don't you bastards just leave me alone, huh?

625. The Internal Affairs shooting team

626. has already closed the case.

627. That's not

628. the only issue here.

629. It is for me.

630. I had Rennick's payroll records sent over.

631. Not a minute of overtime.

632. Kid in college, new car...

633. that's a lot of mileage out of one paycheck.

634. So let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

635. Lotto.

636. Belmont, poker.

637. Ah, nobody's that lucky.

638. And if he was on somebody's pad,

639. what does that get us? I don't know.

640. Either way, he's still a dead cop

641. with expensive tastes.

642. I traced his new car.

643. Service, pick up line two.

644. It's terrible what happened to Rennick— terrible.

645. I hate to lose a customer that way.

646. So he wasn't a first-time buyer? Rennick?

647. ( chuckles ) Rennick was like the vernal equinox.

648. Every spring— robins, crocuses

649. and Rennick in here for a new car.

650. Did you carry the paper?

651. He'd trade in the old model, pay the difference in cash.

652. What a gent.

653. Yeah. They were coming in Friday.

654. I was having the cars detailed today.

655. Cars?

656. A blue wagon

657. and a white Corvette for the missus.

658. She didn't seem like the Corvette type.

659. Who are you kidding?

660. That foxy blonde?

661. Hell of a looker for a widow.

662. She may want the 'Vette yet.

663. Her name is Louisa Birken, a model.

664. Rennick told her he was undercover.

665. Beautiful. Case gets better and better.

666. Want to write the headline?

667. "Dead Cop in Love Nest With Model."

668. How did she meet him?

669. She was trying to find her way to Bloomingdale's.

670. And he came to the rescue?

671. Heidi and Peter, hand in hand ever since.

672. I'm meeting her this afternoon.

673. Do you mind explaining how this is going to help us

674. convict Brutus Walker?

675. I don't know, but it's not something I can ignore.

676. Rennick paid all the bills?

677. Rent, phone, food?

678. He liked to show his affection, he said.

679. Why did he do all this?

680. So you'd remember him when he wasn't around?

681. I know what you're thinking, and I know what this looks like,

682. but Peter really loved me.

683. How often did you see him?

684. Four or five times a week,

685. unless he was away on assignment.

686. Did he use the telephone much?

687. Mm-mm. No.

688. Did any people visit him at your apartment?

689. No.

690. Did you ever see him with this gun?

691. No.

692. I think he was married, but, uh...

693. but he said not.

694. So...

695. sometimes he would give me envelopes for me to keep.

696. What was in these envelopes?

697. Money.

698. You remember the dates that this happened?

699. Yeah.

700. Almost every case Rennick and Sandoval worked

701. checks against dates Louisa told us he gave her money to hold.

702. Drug raid, drug raid, drug raid, possession.

703. That's our friend, Walker.

704. Twice, both looked like clean collars.

705. Drug raid, b and e, dealer homicide.

706. Most of the time,

707. there was either drugs or money confiscated.

708. Most the time?

709. Sometimes they came up empty-handed,

710. or so they said in their reports.

711. Meaning they sold the drugs and pocketed the cash.

712. I don't want to know this.

713. Nobody wants to know this.

714. Don't sink with this one.

715. Rennick was skimming before you were partners.

716. Look, I want you to quit hassling me.

717. Rennick's girlfriend, that's where his money went.

718. Where's yours?

719. Brooklyn Federal Savings.

720. I'm looking for more than $2,416.

721. Maybe it's in a shoe box somewhere, right?

722. My shift's going to start.

723. Sandoval...

724. if you are clean on this one, you're playing it all wrong.

725. Boy, that's quite a coincidence

726. running into District Attorney Schiff in the elevator.

727. It was a fortuitous coincidence.

728. You must have been riding that elevator for hours.

729. What are you selling?

730. Rennick was dirty.

731. Sounds like the Brooklyn Bridge to me.

732. Real dirty.

733. He killed a drug dealer.

734. I'm listening.

735. I don't see you taking out your checkbook.

736. You don't get it, do you, Simpson?

737. There's no deal on this one.

738. What's Walker's play?

739. So Walker's got a dead drug dealer

740. he wants to talk about?

741. What does Walker get out of it?

742. Satisfaction of being a good citizen.

743. Why are you being so unpleasant about this?

744. You think this is unpleasant?

745. You ever go over my head to Schiff again,

746. I'll show you how really unpleasant I can be.

747. Well, at least now we know Rennick killed a drug dealer.

748. All we do now is find out which one.

749. Then all we have to do is figure out who killed Rennick.

750. What was the name of that dealer homicide?

751. Powers, right? Ricky Powers.

752. Yeah, it was six weeks ago.

753. It was awful— screaming, cursing, shooting,

754. and then, Ricky's dead— sprawled all over the floor.

755. I thought he was a nice kid.

756. Poor Miss Perry was beside herself.

757. I mean, this isn't that type of building.

758. Does this look like a drug building?

759. Which apartment is Miss Perry's?

760. I can't believe poor little Ricky was selling narcotics.

761. Someone called 911, Miss Perry.

762. Well, it wasn't me.

763. I was too scared.

764. All that yelling...

765. You hear the man yelling who shot Ricky?

766. He said something like...

767. "Nobody short stops me."

768. Short weights.

769. Short weights.

770. Whatever that means.

771. Then, after a little, the police came—

772. man and a woman.

773. Ooh.

774. That's when my blood ran cold,

775. when they started talking, because the man cop...

776. it was the same voice.

777. He was the one that shot poor little Ricky.

778. It's your meeting, Brutus.

779. I must object to my client being shackled.

780. I'll make a note of that.

781. You have two minutes.

782. All the time you were saying no to Simpson,

783. I knew you'd talk to me.

784. 1:52.

785. All right, all right.

786. I found Ramos with Cassie.

787. She's my girl,

788. but I hardly touched him.

789. Hardly?

790. She's my girl.

791. When he saw me, he got up, he went over...

792. Now, let me guess, he got so shook up,

793. he tripped on a chair and fell out the window.

794. You must have been there.

795. So?

796. So?

797. I want a pass on Ramos.

798. And I'd like an evening in a Jacuzzi with Cybill Shepherd.

799. Hey, look, man.

800. Cassie will never testify against me.

801. Yesterday, the DEA picked her up with sale-weight.

802. All she wants is to play Lets Make a Deal.

803. That's a set-up.

804. You set her up!

805. Time's up.

806. You blew it, Stone.

807. You blew it big!

808. No way!

809. No way I'll give you the name of the guy who Rennick whacked.

810. You mean poor little Ricky?

811. Damn it, Stone,

812. if you knew that and there's no deal

813. what's the point of this meeting?

814. Education.

815. What is the nature of the emergency?

816. I want to report a shooting.

817. Dude's bleeding like a stuck pig.

818. Sure sounds like your voice to me, Brutus.

819. Doesn't take much to figure Rennick offed Ricky Powers.

820. Then, he made you call 911

821. so he could be the first car to respond.

822. How am I doing?

823. No immunity, no plea bargains.

824. Rennick hated plea bargains.

825. Oh, man, Rennick was a scum, man.

826. He was dirty the day he was born!

827. Hundreds of brothers wanted him dead!

828. There are, to say the least,

829. credibility gaps, inconsistencies.

830. Is there something you'd like to add?

831. I don't know— why don't you spell it out for me?

832. Fine. Rennick catches Walker holding

833. the day before he hits Ricky,

834. and he promises Walker that he'll let it slide

835. if Walker will make the 911 call from Ricky's apartment.

836. It was no problem.

837. Ricky's apartment was in your sector.

838. Rennick just drove the patrol car right there.

839. Rennick goes upstairs, shoots Ricky,

840. leaves, goes back down to the car.

841. Walker stays in the apartment, calls 911, then splits.

842. The call goes out.

843. You're the nearest unit.

844. You're the first ones on the scene,

845. and Rennick ends up writing all the reports

846. on a murder that he committed.

847. How am I doing?

848. You know those party favors,

849. the ones you put your fingers in at either end,

850. and the more you pull,

851. the harder it is to get them out?

852. The way to get free is to relax

853. and just let it go.

854. Confession is good for the soul, that it?

855. About a year ago,

856. I caught Rennick pocketing cash after we took down a dealer.

857. He offered me a cut, I told him I'd quit first.

858. Nicky...

859. I must advise you to remain silent.

860. He made all the "rotten job, rotten pay" arguments, and...

861. finally, said he'd stop.

862. But he didn't.

863. I always wanted to be a cop...

864. ever since I was six years old.

865. Rennick and I would go days without talking about it.

866. I think I really knew...

867. you know, inside...

868. I knew what was coming.

869. Did you know that he killed Ricky Powers?

870. It was like watching an accident.

871. Having a premonition, watching yourself

872. go through the motions to fulfill it.

873. I started taping things... for my own protection.

874. He knew I knew too much.

875. What?

876. Just kept one of those

877. microcassette recorders in my jacket.

878. I can't believe he never knew.

879. It was on the night we came up here.

880. Whole thing's on tape.

881. Gentlemen, I think maybe we should make a formal statement

882. after I've consulted with my client.

883. Rennick?

884. Rennick, where are you?

885. ( over speaker ): Rennicko! Rennick, I can't see you!

886. ( gasping ): Rennick!

887. I can't see you! ( recorder clicks )

888. Was this where Officer Rennick

889. pointed his weapon at you?

890. He just came over and took my piece.

891. Where was Walker?

892. He was well off the roof by that time.

893. And you didn't know Rennick's position?

894. I thought he'd gone around the access door toward Walker.

895. He was right behind me with his gun drawn.

896. Pete!

897. Oh, God.

898. Oh, my God.

899. She realized she was about to be the victim

900. of an accidental shooting, so she ran.

901. Rennick shot and missed.

902. And she had an ankle holster with a.32 in it.

903. She hit him in the neck with the first shot.

904. Where did she get the.32?

905. From Rennick,

906. when they first became partners.

907. Someday, he said she might need to stick it

908. in a dead scuzball's hands to save herself from the DA.

909. Nice favor. Yeah.

910. She sign the statement?

911. With her lawyer present.

912. Still have to go to the grand jury.

913. What are you going to ask for?

914. Justifiable homicide.

915. Total walk.

916. The only thing she's guilty of is bad judgment.

917. She should have turned the bastard in.

918. She's a good cop.

919. She's not totally cleared, she'll lose her job.

920. It's your call.

921. 99 Times out of 100, I stand in this grand jury room

922. and ask for an indictment

923. for permission to prove to a jury that someone's guilty

924. and that they ought to be punished.

925. And no crime cries out for punishment

926. more than the killing of a police officer.

927. However, not all homicides are crimes,

928. and the People believe the death of Officer Rennick

929. was a justifiable homicide

930. and that Officer Sandoval acted in self-defense.

931. Loyalty is an important quality among cops—

932. for partners, a kind of insurance,

933. a guarantee of trust

934. that they can depend on one another.

935. Today, I'll tell you about a young cop

936. whose partner violated that bond of loyalty.
