1. Good evening.
Here's what's happening.
Copy !req
2. We're interrupting
our special broadcasting
Copy !req
3. to bring you
this special report.
Copy !req
4. Yesterday afternoon,
Copy !req
5. five Americans
were shot down
Copy !req
6. by other Americans
Copy !req
7. on the airstrip
at Port Kaituma, Guyana.
Copy !req
8. One of the dead,
Copy !req
9. Representative Leo Ryan
of California.
Copy !req
10. They'd gone
to investigate a cult
Copy !req
11. called the Peoples Temple,
headed by a man
Copy !req
12. known as
the Reverend Jim Jones,
Copy !req
13. and they were killed
by members of that cult.
Copy !req
14. Appalling as that was,
it did not prepare us
Copy !req
15. for what was to follow.
Copy !req
16. What you're
about to see
Copy !req
17. almost defies description,
Copy !req
18. and some of you
may not want to watch it.
Copy !req
19. Nine hundred ten died
Copy !req
20. in the poison ritual
of the Peoples Temple.
Copy !req
21. The word on everybody's lips
was shades of Auschwitz.
Copy !req
22. They found tremendous
quantities
Copy !req
23. of potassium cyanide poison
mixed with Kool-Aid.
Copy !req
24. The bodies seemed awful
and orderly,
Copy !req
25. not flung about like
corpses after a battle,
Copy !req
26. but neat, hand in hand
sometimes,
Copy !req
27. arms about
each other's shoulders.
Copy !req
28. Jones' victims
Copy !req
29. were our brothers
and sisters.
Copy !req
30. What was it
that caused them to leave
Copy !req
31. their Christian churches
and join Jones?
Copy !req
32. Why in the world
would so many people
Copy !req
33. agree to kill themselves?
Copy !req
34. You have never met a man
like Jim Jones before.
Copy !req
35. I am here!
Copy !req
36. The spirit of Christ
to set you free!
Copy !req
37. To deliver you
from your captivity.
Copy !req
38. Jim was really captivating.
Copy !req
39. He had this way of really
reaching into your emotions.
Copy !req
40. The community that
he had developed
Copy !req
41. in Peoples Temple was what
I'd been looking for all along.
Copy !req
42. It was full of life.
Copy !req
43. There was a message
of equality for all people.
Copy !req
44. You're going all over
the country,
Copy !req
45. taking the message of God
Copy !req
46. and carrying it out
to the masses.
Copy !req
47. The more power he got,
the darker the story got.
Copy !req
48. What my father was doing
was building
Copy !req
49. a little kingdom for himself.
Copy !req
50. Your whole life, it was all
based around the church.
Copy !req
51. There was a consequence
to any infraction.
Copy !req
52. You punk! You damn
gangland punk!
Copy !req
53. We were gonna be hunted down
and killed if we ever left.
Copy !req
54. There is something
seriously wrong here.
Copy !req
55. The leader has lost his mind.
Copy !req
56. People are being held here
against their will.
Copy !req
57. You bring those
kids back here!
Copy !req
58. This dark side...
Copy !req
59. Let's just be done with it.
Copy !req
60. Let's be done with
the agony of it.
Copy !req
61. will expand
and expand...
Copy !req
62. Hurry, my children, hurry.
Copy !req
63. until finally it explodes
in the Guyanese jungle.
Copy !req
64. The survivors of the
Jonestown suicide murders
Copy !req
65. were met by friends,
relatives,
Copy !req
66. and a handful of Peoples Temple
members from San Francisco.
Copy !req
67. Oh, no!
Copy !req
68. One of the biggest mysteries
Copy !req
69. in the Jonestown story is,
Copy !req
70. what kind of a leader
could order mass suicide
Copy !req
71. and be obeyed?
Copy !req
72. Who was Jim Jones
that grown-ups
Copy !req
73. would kill themselves
and their children for him?
Copy !req
74. I think there's an opinion
Copy !req
75. that these people that
went down there were off,
Copy !req
76. they were a little crazy,
Copy !req
77. they, um...
they weren't like us...
Copy !req
78. when all they were were people
who wanted a better life
Copy !req
79. and thought that they
were gonna get it
Copy !req
80. and worked
damn hard to get it.
Copy !req
81. Before joining
the Peoples Temple,
Copy !req
82. I was a teenager.
Copy !req
83. Just kind of a little lost soul
floating around.
Copy !req
84. I was in
an interracial relationship.
Copy !req
85. My first wife
was African American.
Copy !req
86. Our relationship was not
embraced by family,
Copy !req
87. either hers or mine.
Copy !req
88. Sheryl and I were kind of
out in the world by ourself.
Copy !req
89. We had no support system
whatsoever
Copy !req
90. and felt very
isolated in the world,
Copy !req
91. and when we walked
into that temple,
Copy !req
92. it was full of... life.
Copy !req
93. Everyone was, uh...
was singing.
Copy !req
94. It was very alive,
it was very up,
Copy !req
95. and, you know,
people dancing in the spirit.
Copy !req
96. We were embraced
as an interracial couple,
Copy !req
97. and there was a message
of inclusivity.
Copy !req
98. There was a message
of equality for all people.
Copy !req
99. People were passionate,
people were engaged.
Copy !req
100. They were talking about
that there was
Copy !req
101. this injustice in the world
and, you know, discrimination,
Copy !req
102. and so that moved me.
Copy !req
103. I ended up in Peoples Temple
Copy !req
104. because my sister got involved
in heavy drugs,
Copy !req
105. and my mother just
not knowing where to turn.
Copy !req
106. So a friend of hers
told her,
Copy !req
107. there's this church that has
a drug rehab program for youth.
Copy !req
108. I felt like I was a— a part
of this incredible community
Copy !req
109. that put self aside because
there was a greater good,
Copy !req
110. and the greater good
was to ensure
Copy !req
111. that babies didn't
go to bed hungry,
Copy !req
112. that there was equality
for everyone.
Copy !req
113. I liked that.
I liked the thought
Copy !req
114. that I could actually
make a difference.
Copy !req
115. The first time I went
to a Peoples Temple meeting,
Copy !req
116. as soon as I walked in the door,
I felt like I was home.
Copy !req
117. In the summer of '66,
I volunteered to go to Vietnam.
Copy !req
118. I was 19 years old
Copy !req
119. and it really messed
with my head.
Copy !req
120. When I was discharged
from the Marine Corps,
Copy !req
121. I didn't really know
what to do with myself.
Copy !req
122. I was searching
spiritually.
Copy !req
123. The Peoples Temple was
a perfect kind of synthesis
Copy !req
124. of what I was feeling
at the time,
Copy !req
125. spiritually and politically.
Copy !req
126. And I still hadn't
even met Jim Jones yet.
Copy !req
127. There is, in fact,
somebody to respond
Copy !req
128. any time there is a need...
Copy !req
129. the man who is, in fact,
the Peoples Temple.
Copy !req
130. Let me present to you,
Reverend Jim Jones.
Copy !req
131. That's right!
Copy !req
132. Right!
Copy !req
133. Amen!
Copy !req
134. Yes!
Copy !req
135. Yes!
Copy !req
136. Jim was really captivating.
Copy !req
137. As a child, I just thought,
wow, here's a man
Copy !req
138. who has this speaking ability
that is dynamic.
Copy !req
139. Think of Martin Luther King
at his best,
Copy !req
140. in terms of oratory, you know,
and that's who Jones was.
Copy !req
141. He had this way of really
reaching your emotions.
Copy !req
142. He would address each,
kind of, grouping
Copy !req
143. within Peoples Temple
to get us engaged.
Copy !req
144. If you wanted him
to be a minister,
Copy !req
145. he would talk
about the Bible.
Copy !req
146. If you wanted him
to be political,
Copy !req
147. he was absolutely
gonna include that.
Copy !req
148. Yes.
Copy !req
149. And then there was
this other aspect
Copy !req
150. that we had never seen,
and that was the healings.
Copy !req
151. Oh, yes!
It's really true.
Copy !req
152. The idea that someone could call
someone out of the audience,
Copy !req
153. know about them,
Copy !req
154. and then heal them
of some ailment,
Copy !req
155. that was amazing.
Copy !req
156. I've never seen
anything like that.
Copy !req
157. During the course of my time
at the Peoples Temple,
Copy !req
158. I witnessed many,
many, many healings.
Copy !req
159. Come forth, my dear.
Copy !req
160. Stand up.
Copy !req
161. Take that step.
Take that step.
Copy !req
162. Move forward.
Move forward.
Copy !req
163. Walk briskly.
Walk, walk.
Copy !req
164. Even though I'm a skeptic,
I had to be convinced
Copy !req
165. because what's real is real,
what I could see, I could see.
Copy !req
166. He said, "In the name
of Christ, you're healed!"
Copy !req
167. And my pain was gone.
Copy !req
168. And now,
a year and a half later,
Copy !req
169. it's still gone,
and I praise God for that.
Copy !req
170. I'd been waiting all
this time since Vietnam
Copy !req
171. to contribute my energies
to something that I felt
Copy !req
172. was actually doing good.
Copy !req
173. I jumped in with both feet.
Copy !req
174. The one thing that I never
thought, never even dreamed of,
Copy !req
175. is that our biggest enemy
was the leader.
Copy !req
176. Now, will each of you
give a very fond embrace,
Copy !req
177. a salutary kiss,
a greeting to your neighbor.
Copy !req
178. Let's fill this atmosphere
with warmth and love.
Copy !req
179. It wasn't just Jim Jones
standing there.
Copy !req
180. It was really the ambiance
that he created around him.
Copy !req
181. His wife, Marceline, sitting
on stage, seemingly, you know,
Copy !req
182. mesmerized
by what he was saying.
Copy !req
183. And he'd always talked about
himself as a family man.
Copy !req
184. Jim had adopted kids of all
different races so, you know,
Copy !req
185. I was pretty sold that he was
a good dad and a good leader.
Copy !req
186. When the Jones'
decided to adopt,
Copy !req
187. they came up with the concept
of the rainbow family.
Copy !req
188. Let's try to vary our family
so we will be
Copy !req
189. the living embodiment
of how people of all races
Copy !req
190. come together
and belong together.
Copy !req
191. As the story goes,
my family went in
Copy !req
192. to adopt a baby girl,
and I guess,
Copy !req
193. from what my mother used
to tell me, I started crying.
Copy !req
194. My mother went over
to pick me up.
Copy !req
195. My father came over and saw this
black baby in his wife's arms.
Copy !req
196. They looked at the social worker
at the orphanage
Copy !req
197. and said, "Why can't
we adopt this child instead?"
Copy !req
198. And they kind of went,
"No, no, no, no, no.
Copy !req
199. That's a... That's
an African-American child."
Copy !req
200. And my father took this
political stance,
Copy !req
201. "No, I will adopt any child
that— that— that we want."
Copy !req
202. So, I probably should say
I never liked the title,
Copy !req
203. "the Rainbow Family."
Copy !req
204. We were a mixed bag, for sure,
especially for that time.
Copy !req
205. Now, in many respects,
that's lovely,
Copy !req
206. regardless of the motivation,
but what I felt
Copy !req
207. was that much of
what was created as a family
Copy !req
208. was done for show.
Copy !req
209. It's hard to know if Dad
really believed anything
Copy !req
210. or what he believed,
if he did.
Copy !req
211. My father was starved for
attention from a very early age,
Copy !req
212. and that never let up.
Copy !req
213. If anything,
it intensified.
Copy !req
214. Jim Jones is born and he's
raised in rural Indiana where,
Copy !req
215. back then, one of the main
purposes in life is to fit in,
Copy !req
216. to be like everybody else.
Copy !req
217. And from the time Jim Jones
is born, that doesn't happen.
Copy !req
218. Part of the problem
are his parents.
Copy !req
219. His father was destroyed
by World War I.
Copy !req
220. My Grandma Jones,
she wasn't around a lot.
Copy !req
221. So, my father wasn't being
nurtured in a way
Copy !req
222. that I feel
a child is best nurtured,
Copy !req
223. and I think he compensated
for that.
Copy !req
224. And so he sought
the approval of others
Copy !req
225. in a variety of ways.
Copy !req
226. In a small town like Lynn,
Copy !req
227. Jim was a little
on the weird side.
Copy !req
228. Jim had this flair
for the dramatic
Copy !req
229. and I— I think he enjoyed
being dramatic.
Copy !req
230. He would recruit
the other kids
Copy !req
231. to come to elaborate funerals
he's holding for roadkill.
Copy !req
232. I don't know whether it was
just for its own sake
Copy !req
233. or whether it was
to freak people out.
Copy !req
234. All the boys in Lynn,
during World War II,
Copy !req
235. started playing war games.
Copy !req
236. And they all wanted
to be Allied soldiers.
Copy !req
237. Except one.
Copy !req
238. Jim Jones was mesmerized
by the way Hitler...
Copy !req
239. could have a whole
audience enraptured,
Copy !req
240. stand up and perform,
and order people to do things,
Copy !req
241. and they would do it.
Copy !req
242. He was eccentric, and that could
be off-putting to some children.
Copy !req
243. He was very controlling
in his nature.
Copy !req
244. He did spend a— a fair amount
of time on his own.
Copy !req
245. He was left
to his own devices,
Copy !req
246. so where could he find
this community?
Copy !req
247. I think, with my father,
Copy !req
248. church was where he could
find solace, find peace.
Copy !req
249. The other boys want to play
baseball, ride their bikes.
Copy !req
250. Jim joins
five different churches.
Copy !req
251. And as a child, he saw
that in those church services,
Copy !req
252. there was one guy,
the guy that was talking,
Copy !req
253. that got all the attention.
Copy !req
254. My father was picking up
Copy !req
255. different components
of each religion.
Copy !req
256. But I do think you ought
to stand for the glory of God
Copy !req
257. if you're that dad-gum smart.
Copy !req
258. Baptist preacher
Copy !req
259. who would, you know,
slam the Bible down.
Copy !req
260. The Pentecostal person
talking in tongues,
Copy !req
261. you know, skipping up
and down the aisle.
Copy !req
262. Jim is not just watching the
people rolling on the floor.
Copy !req
263. He's paying attention
to these preachers.
Copy !req
264. What did they say?
Copy !req
265. How do they get people
built up to this point?
Copy !req
266. How does this minister
keep an audience enthralled?
Copy !req
267. It was a given.
Copy !req
268. Of course he's gonna
be a minister.
Copy !req
269. What else is this weird boy
gonna be?
Copy !req
270. His mother instilled in him
Copy !req
271. this concern for,
uh, the— the downtrodden,
Copy !req
272. the— the have-nots, and I think
that he genuinely felt
Copy !req
273. it was wrong
that people be judged
Copy !req
274. by the color of their skin
or their background
Copy !req
275. or what they come from.
Copy !req
276. His message resonated more
with African Americans.
Copy !req
277. They were so tired
of the Jim Crow laws.
Copy !req
278. Jones, in the black
community in Indianapolis,
Copy !req
279. becomes a hero.
Copy !req
280. But you could only go
so far in Indianapolis.
Copy !req
281. He was not gonna be
just a small town guy.
Copy !req
282. He wanted to be
more universally known.
Copy !req
283. He was not somebody committed
to the word of God or the Bible.
Copy !req
284. He wanted notoriety.
He wanted power.
Copy !req
285. Where is the power?
That's where I want to go.
Copy !req
286. California.
That's the place.
Copy !req
287. That's where you
can make things happen.
Copy !req
288. But he had to bring as many
of his followers as he could.
Copy !req
289. What's he gonna tell them
the reason they have to go?
Copy !req
290. We have to be prepared
to take our flight
Copy !req
291. in the case of Armageddon
Copy !req
292. that would spring forth
in a nuclear hell.
Copy !req
293. Jones starts prophesizing,
there's gonna be nuclear war.
Copy !req
294. Everyone living here
is going to die.
Copy !req
295. It's his excuse to get the hell
out of Indiana...
Copy !req
296. and it works.
Copy !req
297. In terms of a darker side
Copy !req
298. that would ultimately
end up being
Copy !req
299. the tragedy at Jonestown,
Copy !req
300. I think that that started,
actually, in California.
Copy !req
301. Regardless of what good works
the temple was involved in,
Copy !req
302. what my father
was doing was building
Copy !req
303. a little kingdom
for himself.
Copy !req
304. We got to Redwood Valley.
Copy !req
305. We had some resources and people
moved into the different homes.
Copy !req
306. And Jim had bought this home
Copy !req
307. with this big grape field
in front of it.
Copy !req
308. And shortly after, Jim had
the resources to build a church.
Copy !req
309. When they relocated
to Redwood Valley,
Copy !req
310. a new group of people
were attracted
Copy !req
311. to the preaching
of Jim Jones,
Copy !req
312. and this was this white,
educated elite.
Copy !req
313. The membership of Peoples Temple
at that point tripled.
Copy !req
314. My life changed when
I moved up to Redwood Valley.
Copy !req
315. It was really kind of nice,
having been raised in the city.
Copy !req
316. We were very busy with church
activities and duties,
Copy !req
317. and when you went to sleep,
you kind of felt
Copy !req
318. like you helped people
and accomplished something.
Copy !req
319. But there was something
that wasn't right.
Copy !req
320. Yes!
Copy !req
321. Oh, yeah! Amen!
Copy !req
322. I think Jim was
a power addict early on.
Copy !req
323. He was always watchful,
trying to think
Copy !req
324. how he could control
Peoples Temple members.
Copy !req
325. When Peoples Temple
has grown big enough,
Copy !req
326. Jones can start teaching
Copy !req
327. the real purpose
of Peoples Temple.
Copy !req
328. We were being introduced
to socialism.
Copy !req
329. Socialism meant that everybody
would have the same.
Copy !req
330. There would be
no starvation,
Copy !req
331. there would be no one going
without any clothes.
Copy !req
332. All the basic needs that a human
being is supposed to have,
Copy !req
333. they would have
under socialism.
Copy !req
334. He starts encouraging
communal living.
Copy !req
335. And let's say in a house
that might have been designed
Copy !req
336. for 6 people to live,
he'll put 12, 15, or even 20,
Copy !req
337. and they'll sleep on
mattresses on the floor.
Copy !req
338. That was so strange to me,
Copy !req
339. but it felt good
to sacrifice
Copy !req
340. because the sacrifice
was for the greater good.
Copy !req
341. No one realized that Jim
was using socialism
Copy !req
342. to bring people in
and control people.
Copy !req
343. This is a church that you're
either all the way in
Copy !req
344. or all the way out—
there's no in between.
Copy !req
345. And this church expected you
to give up everything.
Copy !req
346. He didn't want people
having sex,
Copy !req
347. you know, 'cause
you were supposed to
Copy !req
348. use your sexual energy
for the cause.
Copy !req
349. We were always asked to
further our commitment.
Copy !req
350. Are you willing to give up
your little, petty desires
Copy !req
351. and creature comforts,
or are you just full of hot air?
Copy !req
352. I don't own a car,
I don't own any new furniture,
Copy !req
353. I never buy
any new clothes,
Copy !req
354. I have never bought
a new pair of shoes in my life,
Copy !req
355. and that's why I am free!
Copy !req
356. You're not free!
You're a slave!
Copy !req
357. You're doing just exactly
what "the man" wants you to do.
Copy !req
358. Everything went
to Peoples Temple.
Copy !req
359. All the things that my mother
had— antiques, china,
Copy !req
360. and this beautiful home
in Ukiah.
Copy !req
361. My mother gave her house up
for Jim Jones.
Copy !req
362. The whole idea
of going communal
Copy !req
363. is that you start to cut down
on the outside influence.
Copy !req
364. Everybody is working
as much as possible.
Copy !req
365. Jones said
to one of his followers,
Copy !req
366. the key is, keep 'em poor,
keep 'em tired,
Copy !req
367. and they'll never leave.
Copy !req
368. Jones' spiel was that
family relationships
Copy !req
369. are the sickest
relationships of all.
Copy !req
370. So, the families
were separated.
Copy !req
371. I cared for four children,
myself, that were not mine.
Copy !req
372. They were someone
else's children.
Copy !req
373. Now Jones wants his followers
to refer to him
Copy !req
374. and Marceline
as father and mother.
Copy !req
375. Marceline loved the idea
they were a team,
Copy !req
376. they were working together.
Copy !req
377. He pretended he was
a family man,
Copy !req
378. but, you know, really
that was all a façade.
Copy !req
379. That was all the public persona.
Copy !req
380. Nothing is as it appears.
Copy !req
381. Most people had no idea
Jim was not being faithful.
Copy !req
382. He found another
long-term companion.
Copy !req
383. Her name was Carolyn Layton,
Copy !req
384. and Carolyn was absolutely
enraptured of Jim Jones.
Copy !req
385. The things
he was saying and doing
Copy !req
386. mirrored her beliefs.
Copy !req
387. As a young child,
I think I first started noticing
Copy !req
388. when Jim would leave at night
and come home in the morning.
Copy !req
389. His not being faithful...
Copy !req
390. it was just wrong.
Copy !req
391. I was mortified,
horrified by it.
Copy !req
392. That's when my esteem for him
gradually fell apart.
Copy !req
393. Eventually, I remember
my mother wanting a divorce.
Copy !req
394. She wanted the kids.
Copy !req
395. And Jim said,
Copy !req
396. you will die before you
take my kids away from me.
Copy !req
397. This dark side that appears
Copy !req
398. really for the first time
in Ukiah...
Copy !req
399. will expand and expand
Copy !req
400. until finally it explodes
in the Guyanese jungle.
Copy !req
401. Peoples Temple population
starts to grow,
Copy !req
402. and as it grows, so does
Jones' need for money.
Copy !req
403. Jim was looking
for more membership,
Copy !req
404. so, in about 1972, we started
bus trips around the country.
Copy !req
405. Peoples Temple buys a fleet
of Greyhound buses.
Copy !req
406. Jim Jones is gonna go
to the big cities
Copy !req
407. and he is going to
attract huge crowds,
Copy !req
408. get a lot of money,
Copy !req
409. and then he'll come back,
he can use that in Ukiah.
Copy !req
410. We would pass out leaflets,
speak to people,
Copy !req
411. try to get 'em
to the service
Copy !req
412. and tout the wonders of
Jim Jones and Peoples Temple.
Copy !req
413. As a teenager, wha— what
better life could you have?
Copy !req
414. You're hanging out
with all your friends,
Copy !req
415. you're going
all over the country
Copy !req
416. and taking the message of God
Copy !req
417. and carrying it out
to the masses.
Copy !req
418. Along the way,
people always joined.
Copy !req
419. A couple buses aren't filled.
Copy !req
420. That's so as people
want to join,
Copy !req
421. they can just get on the bus
and go with him.
Copy !req
422. And as his following grows,
Copy !req
423. they find peripheral ways
to make money.
Copy !req
424. They start selling pictures
that Jones has blessed.
Copy !req
425. This picture here
would sell for $5.
Copy !req
426. This is another picture
that he had for protection.
Copy !req
427. And if you don't have money
for the pictures,
Copy !req
428. give us your name
and address
Copy !req
429. and Reverend Jones
will bless a penny
Copy !req
430. and you'll be
in his prayers.
Copy !req
431. They market
all kinds of things.
Copy !req
432. Money comes pouring in.
Copy !req
433. Heavenly spirit! God!
Copy !req
434. The man is
a master entertainer.
Copy !req
435. Everything is planned
to the minute.
Copy !req
436. And then come the healings.
Copy !req
437. Sister Ingram,
you're concerned
Copy !req
438. about the losing...
Copy !req
439. the losing of your sight.
Copy !req
440. Take your glasses off.
Copy !req
441. You concentrate hard.
Copy !req
442. Three.
Copy !req
443. You've been feeling pain
here in the chest?
Copy !req
444. Yes.
Copy !req
445. Look at my face.
Copy !req
446. Where's your pain?
Copy !req
447. Everybody is out of their minds
with excitement,
Copy !req
448. and Jones has never
been more dramatic.
Copy !req
449. One time, a person
broke their leg,
Copy !req
450. so they were tooken to
the hospital and put a cast on.
Copy !req
451. The next service,
their name was called
Copy !req
452. and asked if they wanted
to walk again.
Copy !req
453. Hear this?
Copy !req
454. The cast was cut off
right in front of everybody.
Copy !req
455. You're seeing this woman
who's all of a sudden
Copy !req
456. running through the church,
and everyone's just excited
Copy !req
457. and, "Father's healed her!"
Copy !req
458. And then a big thing at the time
was removal of cancers.
Copy !req
459. You have a cancer!
I can tell!
Copy !req
460. Come forward!
I'm gonna heal you.
Copy !req
461. This Christian,
when she was in the church
Copy !req
462. of God and Christ,
no one could heal her.
Copy !req
463. Five times operated for cancer,
Copy !req
464. the doctors
sewed her up to die.
Copy !req
465. But I...
I said one day a year ago,
Copy !req
466. your time has come,
and she spit up the cancer.
Copy !req
467. You're healed.
Copy !req
468. People were jumping and happy
and I thought,
Copy !req
469. oh, my gosh,
she's healed of cancer.
Copy !req
470. I'm excited, the whole church
is just in a frenzy.
Copy !req
471. As time wore on,
Copy !req
472. I started questioning
the healings.
Copy !req
473. I should have known
that it was a lie.
Copy !req
474. And people died
because of that.
Copy !req
475. As time wore on,
Copy !req
476. I started questioning
the healings.
Copy !req
477. There was a rumor that there was
something nefarious going on.
Copy !req
478. The healing with the woman that
they cut the cast off
Copy !req
479. and she's running around...
Copy !req
480. they drugged her,
and they put the cast on her
Copy !req
481. while she was asleep.
Copy !req
482. So when she woke up,
Copy !req
483. they told her that
she had fallen.
Copy !req
484. They said,
oh, you broke your leg.
Copy !req
485. She had no recollection
of it at all.
Copy !req
486. Her leg was never broken.
Copy !req
487. The fake healings were a way
to attract people falsely.
Copy !req
488. Even though they were great
tools to get people to believe,
Copy !req
489. they were nefarious.
Copy !req
490. I personally know
someone's grandmother,
Copy !req
491. who Jim apparently
healed of cancer.
Copy !req
492. And then when cancer came back,
guess what she said?
Copy !req
493. "It must be because
I don't believe enough."
Copy !req
494. She wasn't
gonna get treatment.
Copy !req
495. She was just gonna
pray harder
Copy !req
496. and have more faith in Jim.
Copy !req
497. Well, she died of cancer.
Copy !req
498. And that's just one of,
I'm sure,
Copy !req
499. hundreds of stories.
Copy !req
500. This was one of those areas
where that should have been
Copy !req
501. a red flag
that I just ignored.
Copy !req
502. I'm not saying it's right,
Copy !req
503. but I believed the temple
was an opportunity
Copy !req
504. to create something
that was truly great.
Copy !req
505. And that's why I stayed
as long as I did.
Copy !req
506. The temple was set up so
no one could join the church
Copy !req
507. without first being checked out
thoroughly by Jones.
Copy !req
508. Everything required him
to be involved.
Copy !req
509. And the pressure got to him.
Copy !req
510. And Jones became
an abuser of drugs.
Copy !req
511. Jim Jones shared
with the congregation
Copy !req
512. that he had to take
something to keep him up
Copy !req
513. because he worked 24/7,
Copy !req
514. 24 hours a day for
the cause of socialism.
Copy !req
515. He needed amphetamines
to get up and keep going.
Copy !req
516. His schedule would last
Copy !req
517. from early in the morning
until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m.
Copy !req
518. So he was sleeping maybe
three or four hours a night.
Copy !req
519. And then,
when he could rest,
Copy !req
520. he had to take tranquilizers
to come down.
Copy !req
521. Yes!
Copy !req
522. Yeah!
Copy !req
523. I had no idea that
Jim was on drugs.
Copy !req
524. No idea at all.
Copy !req
525. Later, I would discover
the sunglasses
Copy !req
526. was because he was hiding
the way his eyes looked.
Copy !req
527. Everybody remembers that Jim
Jones always wore dark glasses.
Copy !req
528. It was one of his signature
appearance things.
Copy !req
529. And he told everyone
it was because
Copy !req
530. the spirit of the Lord
was so powerful in him,
Copy !req
531. if you looked directly
in his eyes,
Copy !req
532. you might
be burned on the spot.
Copy !req
533. But the real reason he did
was his eyes were so red
Copy !req
534. and watery and swollen
from the drug use.
Copy !req
535. As he was taking
more and more drugs,
Copy !req
536. you know,
his personality changed.
Copy !req
537. Behind the scenes,
Copy !req
538. Jim's narcissism
was just uncontained.
Copy !req
539. And he was surrounded
by mistresses.
Copy !req
540. The women that Jones
was having sex with
Copy !req
541. almost all considered it
an honor to do this for father.
Copy !req
542. He portrayed himself
as a martyr,
Copy !req
543. that he would have to have sex
with these different members
Copy !req
544. to solidify their alliance,
to solidify their loyalty.
Copy !req
545. He made a lot
of really crude remarks.
Copy !req
546. "If I need to
get you to socialism
Copy !req
547. on the tip of my,
I'll do it."
Copy !req
548. Each time he had sex
with somebody,
Copy !req
549. he did it as one
more notch in his belt
Copy !req
550. of how to become yet
more powerful.
Copy !req
551. Jones always said,
the ends justifies the means,
Copy !req
552. which means you can do
anything you need to do
Copy !req
553. to get to where
you wanna go
Copy !req
554. because the goal is
for the greater good.
Copy !req
555. So, no matter how you get there,
you get there,
Copy !req
556. which excuses anything,
any behaviors at all.
Copy !req
557. To all outward appearances,
Jones and Peoples Temple
Copy !req
558. had accomplished great things
and there was unlimited future.
Copy !req
559. But the lust for power
continues to grow.
Copy !req
560. He would create enemies
to bind his followers closer.
Copy !req
561. The government was out to get us
and it was a conspiracy.
Copy !req
562. Look at all the people
that have been killed,
Copy !req
563. look at all of our young people
who are in prison.
Copy !req
564. Actual events were used
Copy !req
565. to solidify his position,
Copy !req
566. and it was extremely effective
because there was truth to it.
Copy !req
567. I've just come in
from Washington,
Copy !req
568. just flew in on the plane
from the conference
Copy !req
569. with the top-notch leaders.
Copy !req
570. I listened to them talk
about planned takeovers.
Copy !req
571. I listened to them
to talk about it
Copy !req
572. like it was just an ordinary
Sunday school picnic.
Copy !req
573. Task force warns nation
Copy !req
574. to get ready for riots
Copy !req
575. and to get ready
for martial law.
Copy !req
576. They're gonna put
all the poor people away,
Copy !req
577. and they're gonna
come for you,
Copy !req
578. they're gonna come
for your children.
Copy !req
579. There was so much paranoia
about the ways
Copy !req
580. that law enforcement
was going to break up
Copy !req
581. the community
of Peoples Temple.
Copy !req
582. They looked
at themselves as people
Copy !req
583. who were being persecuted
from the outside.
Copy !req
584. We ended up going to church
more and more.
Copy !req
585. Before you knew it,
Copy !req
586. your whole life was all based
around the church.
Copy !req
587. Now we're in isolationist mode,
Copy !req
588. where Jim would tell us
that we were...
Copy !req
589. you know,
that black people
Copy !req
590. were gonna be put in
concentration camps.
Copy !req
591. Dictatorships that can come in
Copy !req
592. like they did
with the Japanese.
Copy !req
593. It's, "Aw, this country
won't ever do that."
Copy !req
594. It did it already!
Copy !req
595. He's tapping
into people's fears,
Copy !req
596. he's tapping into
people's insecurities.
Copy !req
597. The paranoia was real
in Peoples Temple.
Copy !req
598. Get ready for
identification marks
Copy !req
599. to be put on your body,
an identification number
Copy !req
600. even necessarily
tattooed on you.
Copy !req
601. You say, oh, America
wouldn't do that.
Copy !req
602. Don't talk to me about
what America would not do.
Copy !req
603. We've lived through Martin
being assassinated.
Copy !req
604. We've lived through
Malcolm being assassinated.
Copy !req
605. We lived through Robert Kennedy
being assassinated.
Copy !req
606. Assassination for leaders
Copy !req
607. was something
you thought about.
Copy !req
608. Jim would say that he was
getting death threats
Copy !req
609. because he was making
such a difference
Copy !req
610. and stirring up so much
controversy in the community
Copy !req
611. of bringing black people
and white people together
Copy !req
612. that he was a threat
to the status quo.
Copy !req
613. One Sunday service,
I was out in the parking lot,
Copy !req
614. talking to someone.
Copy !req
615. We're all out after church
and we're having festivities
Copy !req
616. and kids are playing
on the basketball court.
Copy !req
617. We got tables out for
the meal in between church.
Copy !req
618. Bright, sunny, beautiful day.
We were enjoying ourselves.
Copy !req
619. And then
all hell broke loose.
Copy !req
620. People were screaming,
father's shot!
Copy !req
621. There's blood flowing
from his chest.
Copy !req
622. Father's been shot,
and screams
Copy !req
623. and a lot of anguish,
people crying out.
Copy !req
624. There's someone trying to
assassinate Jim Jones.
Copy !req
