1. I didn't put it in there.Copy !req
2. Mee-maw. Big ideas right here.Copy !req
3. Get out of there, Kanye.Copy !req
4. We got my man, Kanye.
Channel Zero.Copy !req
5. I wouldn't be here
if it wasn't for this man.Copy !req
6. - Coodie.
- Coodie on the camera.Copy !req
7. Is there room
for backpack rapperCopy !req
8. in Roc-A-Fella's Bentley Hit Parade?Copy !req
9. He's gonna be one of the greats.
Trust me. The next greats.Copy !req
10. When I do this album,
with God's blessings,Copy !req
11. it shouldn't be no way for me to lose.Copy !req
12. Kanye! Kanye! Kanye!Copy !req
13. And what's fucked up,Copy !req
14. is that when a nigga become great,
people get hate.Copy !req
15. Thought it was the music. I didn't know.Copy !req
16. I didn't know.
I lived and I breathed this shit.Copy !req
17. Who is it that you
would like to say, "I told you so?"Copy !req
18. Give it up for y'all niggas!
Kanye did it, from Chicago, motherfuckers.Copy !req
19. Hey, Kanye!Copy !req
20. It was like God saying,Copy !req
21. "I'm about to hand you the world."Copy !req
22. "Just know, at any time,
I could take it away from you."Copy !req
23. Belief is the powerCopy !req
24. that fuels your purpose.Copy !req
25. From where our story
first began in Chicago,Copy !req
26. to the dream that pushed him
to move to New York.Copy !req
27. My first year documenting Kanye WestCopy !req
28. was much more
than I could have ever imagined.Copy !req
29. And when he landed a deal
with Roc-A-Fella Records,Copy !req
30. the real work was about to begin.Copy !req
31. Thank y'all for coming.Copy !req
32. A lot of things going on in Roc-A-Fella.Copy !req
33. All right, so let's do some questions.Copy !req
34. I heard you mention
a new artist, Kanye West.Copy !req
35. What's some of your plans for him?Copy !req
36. I mean, Kanye is definitely a Roc-A-Fella.Copy !req
37. He's an entrepreneur.Copy !req
38. He's promoting himself as we speak.Copy !req
39. The lighting is great.Copy !req
40. Wanna share that look, fool?Copy !req
41. Face fat as fuck.Copy !req
42. Can you hold this for a second?Copy !req
43. Every time I see him,
he has somebody with him.Copy !req
44. He has a fucking camera with him.Copy !req
45. And he does really good music.Copy !req
46. Kanye, why don't you come up
and answer the question?Copy !req
47. Whatever he wants to do, he can do.Copy !req
48. Yo, I definitely think I'm bringing,
uh, an entire new marketCopy !req
49. to Roc-A-Fella. 'Cause I rap
the exact image that I look like.Copy !req
50. What I go through.
And a lot of people be like,Copy !req
51. "Damn. I actually go through that."Copy !req
52. I'm not in the streets like that.
I'm not really that rich.Copy !req
53. I'm driving this.
I'm driving that.Copy !req
54. Kanye, you about to get them keys.Copy !req
55. So you brought my man a Benz, huh?Copy !req
56. - His G-Wagon.
- Yeah.Copy !req
57. 12,000 a month?Copy !req
58. Because I went through
the struggle of being broke,Copy !req
59. I'm like anybody sitting here.Copy !req
60. I got to work him up to
the new car we're getting, the Maybach.Copy !req
61. It starts at 300.Copy !req
62. 300?Copy !req
63. He'll be able to
get it next year, for sure.Copy !req
64. 'Cause I feel like it's a market.Copy !req
65. I feel like we gonna go ten million
with what I've got to say.Copy !req
66. We should all give him
a big round of applause.Copy !req
67. Thing was, even though Kanye
was finally a Roc-A-Fella artist,Copy !req
68. it still felt like he was on the sidelineCopy !req
69. trying to figure out
how to get into the game.Copy !req
70. People know about the beats, but to me…Copy !req
71. I love doing beats. I ain't frontin',Copy !req
72. but that was like an internship for me.Copy !req
73. I ain't the number one producer.
I'm a rapper.Copy !req
74. Put me in the ranks of the rappers.Copy !req
75. He made it this far,
but he still had a lot to proveCopy !req
76. if he was ever gonna get
his moment to shine.Copy !req
77. Let's go!Copy !req
78. Let's go! Let's go!Copy !req
79. What're you saying, Ye?Copy !req
80. I don't know yet.Copy !req
81. - Cut.Copy !req
82. I'm saying
the best rapper-producer in the game.Copy !req
83. I'm cosigning here. Look, Gary.
"Big Face" Gary, Roc-A-Fella.Copy !req
84. I'm cosigning. Best rapper-producer
in the fucking game.Copy !req
85. It means nothing to be
the best rapper-producer—Copy !req
86. - It means a lot.
- It don't. 'Em niggas is weak.Copy !req
87. If you say "best rapper-producer,"
he get mad at me.Copy !req
88. I keep saying best rapper-producer.
He mad.Copy !req
89. No, man.
That's like saying, "best kid rapper."Copy !req
90. Or the "best female emcee."Copy !req
91. Well, Kan, they don't know about you.Copy !req
92. No.Copy !req
93. Wherever I'm at
with all the other rappers…Copy !req
94. If I'm the 50th rapper, I'm a rapper.Copy !req
95. Fuck producing.Copy !req
96. I'm two different persons—Copy !req
97. Wanna know about your beats?
Fuck your beats.Copy !req
98. I'm saying I do beats,
but I'm competing against these niggas.Copy !req
99. I ain't trying to compete
against no producers.Copy !req
100. I'm listening to what Hov doing.Copy !req
101. Can I get a beat?Copy !req
102. He's giving his beats now.Copy !req
103. Producer on our label,
I ain't get a beat from him yet.Copy !req
104. Hey, Peedi. C'mon man.Copy !req
105. This Peedi. This his first debut.Copy !req
106. The reality was,
a rapper like Peedi CrakkCopy !req
107. was a great fit for Roc-A-Fella's image.Copy !req
108. And deal or no deal,
the label still saw KanyeCopy !req
109. as a producer first.Copy !req
110. What's going on here?Copy !req
111. This song
gonna break Peedi Crakk wide open.Copy !req
112. Dame want his album already.Copy !req
113. My man Kanye
want to go to LA and work with him.Copy !req
114. Give him some heat.Copy !req
115. Well, me too!Copy !req
116. Okay. Well, we all going!Copy !req
117. We going to LA, Mac. We going to LA.Copy !req
118. But even though
the Roc was trying to box him in,Copy !req
119. Kanye made sure
to create opportunities for himself.Copy !req
120. So while Jay-Z was in the studio
working on Blueprint 2,Copy !req
121. Kanye asked Jay if he could spit a verseCopy !req
122. with the hopes
of being featured on the album.Copy !req
123. If he couldn't convince Jay-Z
that he can really rap,Copy !req
124. Roc-A-Fella might not ever
take him seriously as an artist.Copy !req
125. I gotta make it
closer together after that.Copy !req
126. How does the other one go?Copy !req
127. Just start over. Do it again. Do it again.Copy !req
128. That part in the middle?Copy !req
129. That rhyme right there is the shit.
It just needs a start.Copy !req
130. One more time. You started…
On the third one you started feeling it.Copy !req
131. Start from the top.Copy !req
132. You know what I'm saying? Feel that shit.Copy !req
133. - Yeah.
- That was it.Copy !req
134. That was it though.Copy !req
135. Aight.Copy !req
136. - You know what I'm saying?
- Yeah.Copy !req
137. Aight.Copy !req
138. The 30-minute assassin.Copy !req
139. Closed mouth don't get fed.Copy !req
140. You wouldn't have said nothing,
you wouldn't have been on that.Copy !req
141. Just a long-ass way from…Copy !req
142. fucking rapping in my mama's crib.Copy !req
143. For years, everybody told Kanye
to just stick to the beats.Copy !req
144. Now he had a featureCopy !req
145. with one of the greatest emcees
to ever touch the mic.Copy !req
146. Jay, whatchu got to say about Ye West?Copy !req
147. Ye West! Hot! Fire!Copy !req
148. - Put my money on him.
- Aight.Copy !req
149. That cosign from Jay-Z was huge.Copy !req
150. And next, Dame Dash
had Kanye produce and rapCopy !req
151. on the single for Roc-A-Fella's
Paid in Full soundtrack.Copy !req
152. Goddamn, Kanye.
I bet niggas didn't know you could rap.Copy !req
153. This the producer on the Roc.
He rap better than most rappers!Copy !req
154. Now that he finally had
Jay-Z's and Dame's attention,Copy !req
155. Kanye was excited to keep working
on his debut album, The College Dropout.Copy !req
156. But first, Roc-A-Fella sent him to LA
to work on that music for Peedi Crakk.Copy !req
157. We thought it would be a quick trip.Copy !req
158. But then I got the news
that would change everything.Copy !req
159. Hip-hop producer Kanye West
was injured when his car crashedCopy !req
160. in West Hollywood, Los Angeles,
early Wednesday morning.Copy !req
161. Kanye was
driving back to his hotelCopy !req
162. after a late-night studio sessionCopy !req
163. when he crashed his car.Copy !req
164. And almost lost his life.Copy !req
165. With God's blessings…Copy !req
166. You need an angel
to watch over you.Copy !req
167. I was relieved
when Mama West called meCopy !req
168. and said that Kanye survived.Copy !req
169. But when she told me
he broke his jaw in three places…Copy !req
170. …I was afraid he would never rap again.Copy !req
171. I'm a motherfucking rapper.Copy !req
172. I got some songs in my heart.Copy !req
173. It felt like everything
he'd worked so hard for…Copy !req
174. was over.Copy !req
175. Kanye!Copy !req
176. A few weeks later,
Kanye called me.Copy !req
177. With his mouth wired shut.Copy !req
178. And I was shocked when he started rapping
a new song over the phone,Copy !req
179. called "Through the Wire."Copy !req
180. Because of the pain he was in,
the doctors had urged him not to travel.Copy !req
181. But they couldn't stop him from working.Copy !req
182. The way he saw it, the music he was making
for his album was life-changing.Copy !req
183. And he told me he needed me in LA.Copy !req
184. I was on a plane the next day.Copy !req
185. Before we get started,
we want to sendCopy !req
186. a shout-out to music producer Kanye West.Copy !req
187. He's fine, but he was in a car accident.
So we just want to send him our best.Copy !req
188. We hope he gets better soon.
And keeps doing those hot beats.Copy !req
189. I got some old-school shit.
We gonna make it look hot though.Copy !req
190. Yo, Greg.Copy !req
191. You want to just chill here?
We just going to the dentist.Copy !req
192. Do you want to chill here?
'Cause we going to the dentist!Copy !req
193. - My teeth are all fucked up.
- Mmm-mmm.Copy !req
194. Missing a bracket here.Copy !req
195. Oh, shit.Copy !req
196. I'm going to
this wack-ass dentist right now,Copy !req
197. which got referred to me
by Cedars-Sinai Hospital.Copy !req
198. - What's up, shorty?
- What type of camera is that?Copy !req
199. - Wait. A Canon—
- Canon GL1.Copy !req
200. You use MiniDVs?Copy !req
201. - Yeah.
- You good with Final Cut Pro?Copy !req
202. I mean…
Like, I'm not good at editing, but…Copy !req
203. - You good… Okay.
- But I…Copy !req
204. I'm a good director.Copy !req
205. Okay.Copy !req
206. Where your picture at, Kanye?Copy !req
207. I'm still working.Copy !req
208. - Why are you filming?
- This is my documentary.Copy !req
209. No. We're gonna take
the wires out for you, right?Copy !req
210. - Yeah.
- You're gonna film that?Copy !req
211. Yeah, what's wrong?Copy !req
212. - You cannot do that.
- Why not?Copy !req
213. - No. Because—
- It's illegal?Copy !req
214. Yeah.Copy !req
215. For real?Copy !req
216. Your jaw surgery should not be, um…Copy !req
217. cannot be done until your jaw heals,
which takes a couple of months.Copy !req
218. You told me three weeks last time.Copy !req
219. No. I did not say…Copy !req
220. Three weeks is…
Well, I mean, it's healed in terms of…Copy !req
221. It is sticking. But it's not healed enough
to rebreak the jaw to fix the teeth.Copy !req
222. You see what I'm saying?Copy !req
223. All right.Copy !req
224. - You're not "healed" healed.
- Yeah.Copy !req
225. In my opinion,
you should have physical therapyCopy !req
226. to get the jaw mobilized. That is job one.Copy !req
227. Because, unfortunately,
your jaw is broken way up high here.Copy !req
228. - All right.
- Okay?Copy !req
229. So if you don't mobilize it,
it's gonna get stuck.Copy !req
230. Let me see your bite.Copy !req
231. Let me just take a bite.Copy !req
232. I, uh…
I have a video shoot in January.Copy !req
233. You have video shoot
in January? Okay.Copy !req
234. I was supposed to have one in December,Copy !req
235. but will my mouth look somewhat normal?Copy !req
236. - Even though my bite is off.
- Well, that is not possible.Copy !req
237. That will not be possible.Copy !req
238. Bite. All the way.
Good. Keep it like that. Don't open.Copy !req
239. Okay.Copy !req
240. You won't be able
to get your jaw fixed in January.Copy !req
241. So, you know, I mean…Copy !req
242. You can have a video shoot.
You're having one now.Copy !req
243. Right?Copy !req
244. But I wanna have one when I look good.Copy !req
245. - You look pretty good.Copy !req
246. You look good enough.Copy !req
247. I wanna be to my fullest.Copy !req
248. - Okay? All right?
- All right.Copy !req
249. Your video period
can be a lot of the documentary.Copy !req
250. - We could do one—
- "Through the Wire."Copy !req
251. What I'm thinking is we do one right now.Copy !req
252. 'Cause, this little… Taking this off
looks like I'm taking the wires off.Copy !req
253. - You know what I'm saying?
- Yeah.Copy !req
254. It look like they putting 'em on.Copy !req
255. Yeah. You could put that shot and
that little talking there in the video.Copy !req
256. It could show him talking…Copy !req
257. Have little excerpts over the chorus part?Copy !req
258. - Mmm-hmm.
- Open a little bit for me.Copy !req
259. Believe me. The wider you open,
the less you feel.Copy !req
260. Just a little pinch here.Copy !req
261. Don't move. Relax. Relax your face.Copy !req
262. You okay?Copy !req
263. Almost done with the shots. Okay?Copy !req
264. "He crying on TV?"Copy !req
265. Yeah, crying on TV. What's this? You know?Copy !req
266. All your fans expect you not to cry.
Expect you to be brave. You know?Copy !req
267. Okay.Copy !req
268. Okay. We'll let you rest here for a while.Copy !req
269. I have to go, so the other doctor
will take it out for you. Okay?Copy !req
270. - That's pretty good.
- Hmm?Copy !req
271. Okay.Copy !req
272. I can't even talk.Copy !req
273. - Damn, your shit numb?
- Mmm-hmm.Copy !req
274. If you feel it,
let me know. Okay?Copy !req
275. You know what I'm saying?Copy !req
276. No.
We don't know what you're saying.Copy !req
277. It's coming out.Copy !req
278. Coming through.Copy !req
279. Okay.Copy !req
280. - Can I keep these?
- Yeah.Copy !req
281. Why don't we wash them off
and give them to you? All right?Copy !req
282. No. My mother wants
to keep the blood on them.Copy !req
283. - Hmm?
- My mama wants to keep the blood on them.Copy !req
284. - What for?
- That's just how she wants them.Copy !req
285. - Who?
- My mama. My mother.Copy !req
286. - Your who?
- My mother.Copy !req
287. She saves this stuff.Copy !req
288. Feeling like
he had just a small window of timeCopy !req
289. to get his career to the next level,Copy !req
290. it was hard for Kanye to face the reality
that his recovery would take so long.Copy !req
291. Despite the frustration and pain,Copy !req
292. he was determined to make the best of it.Copy !req
293. Now picture this
with gums around it though.Copy !req
294. And then they're fangs.Copy !req
295. I'mma fuck this up right here.Copy !req
296. That's gonna come off.Copy !req
297. - Don't let go when you pull it out.
- That shit was shaked a lot.Copy !req
298. Hold on to it.Copy !req
299. - Yeah. It ain't gonna pop.
- Whoo!Copy !req
300. Man, we is big ballers.
We go out with the best.Copy !req
301. - How you doing?
- You guys ready?Copy !req
302. Let me get cheese fries
with Cajun fries under the cheese.Copy !req
303. With more cheese than normal.
A lot of cheese.Copy !req
304. Get me the mashed potatoes
with the country gravy.Copy !req
305. And that is all.Copy !req
306. I already eaten corn and potatoes today.Copy !req
307. Man, I lost a lot of weight. I feel good.Copy !req
308. I gotta be lifting
my shirt up around here.Copy !req
309. You know, I lost a lot of weight.Copy !req
310. - Let me see.
- Look.Copy !req
311. They played a nigga, dawg.Copy !req
312. I'm like,
"I'm motherfucking Coodie, nigga."Copy !req
313. "Channel motherfucking Zero."Copy !req
314. I'm like,
"Nigga, you don't know Channel Zero?"Copy !req
315. That motherfucker said, "No."Copy !req
316. I said, "Well, I was on BET."Copy !req
317. What's this nigga
doing right there?Copy !req
318. UCLA students right there.Copy !req
319. Let me see.
Y'all see A Beautiful Mind?Copy !req
320. Some more cheese?Copy !req
321. See, I can't really chew
'cause I was in an accident.Copy !req
322. - So they gotta melt this down some more.
- Melt it?Copy !req
323. Go over there
and get a magazine called Mass Appeal.Copy !req
324. Just take your time and fan through it
until you see a full page ad on him.Copy !req
325. And then you're gonna realize.Copy !req
326. We believe you!Copy !req
327. Find out who that dude is,Copy !req
328. 'cause we want y'all
to get the album when it comes out.Copy !req
329. For real.Copy !req
330. College students.Copy !req
331. Stay in school.
Don't drop out like Kanye did.Copy !req
332. Since I had gotten to LA,
I barely had time to put my bags downCopy !req
333. and we were already on the move.Copy !req
334. After the accident,Copy !req
335. Roc-A-Fella put The College Dropout
on the shelf.Copy !req
336. We didn't know when
they were going to release it.Copy !req
337. But Kanye was motivated more than ever.Copy !req
338. So he called in favors
to at least get the album recorded.Copy !req
339. We can load it up.
Track number two.Copy !req
340. Y'all have the light dimmed or something?Copy !req
341. - How do you say it? Kanye—
- Kanye.Copy !req
342. - Kanye?
- Yeah.Copy !req
343. You got a title for it?Copy !req
344. Um… Yeah. Call it "Slow Jamz."Copy !req
345. Hey, Foxx.
Tell him what your concept is, Kanye.Copy !req
346. - What?
- Here it is.Copy !req
347. My concept for the song…
They gonna say…Copy !req
348. The girls will be like,Copy !req
349. "I feel this concept and this rapping."Copy !req
350. "But sometimes I need, um…"Copy !req
351. "I need some slow shit.
I need some dusties."Copy !req
352. - "I need some…"
- Whoo!Copy !req
353. - We just got through talking about this!
- That's what I told him.Copy !req
354. That's the whole shit.Copy !req
355. Marvin Gaye. Luther Vandross. Whatever.Copy !req
356. Yeah. Feed me some more. Listen.Copy !req
357. She wants some Oran "Juice" Jones?
Wanna hit 'em with Oran "Juice" Jones?Copy !req
358. What we gonna hit 'em with?
How far we gonna go?Copy !req
359. We got Oran "Juice" Jones.
We got to hit the Keith Sweat.Copy !req
360. You say whatever
that comes to your mind.Copy !req
361. All right. I got it.Copy !req
362. It was amazing
to be filming at Jamie Foxx's houseCopy !req
363. while he laid down a hook for "Slow Jamz."Copy !req
364. Thank God he had his studio in his cribCopy !req
365. because Roc-A-Fella
wouldn't open up Kanye's recording budget.Copy !req
366. So to keep making his album,Copy !req
367. he had to borrow studio time
from other artists whenever he could.Copy !req
368. Uh, Pharrell's supposed
to give us ten minutes with Luda.Copy !req
369. - Yeah.
- Um…Copy !req
370. We haven't heard anything
about you guys using—Copy !req
371. You only have to let me
use one for ten minutes.Copy !req
372. - I have no idea what's going on.
- All right.Copy !req
373. How are you? Chilling?Copy !req
374. Yo, where's Luda at?Copy !req
375. He was in here.Copy !req
376. He might have moved back to the whip.
We're looking for him too.Copy !req
377. They said
in the back studio or somewhere?Copy !req
378. Ain't nobody in there.Copy !req
379. Usually, when I come here,
it would be Ludacris here.Copy !req
380. He be sitting there waiting for me.Copy !req
381. I don't know what's up
with this situation right here.Copy !req
382. Y'all have to look around.Copy !req
383. What's your name?Copy !req
384. - Aaron.
- I'm Kanye West.Copy !req
385. I'm a producer.
I produce for Roc-A-Fella. I did…Copy !req
386. You ever heard that song?Copy !req
387. Yeah. I produced all those joints.Copy !req
388. - Cool.
- Yeah.Copy !req
389. Damn, damn, damn!Copy !req
390. Oh! Nigga was stalling.Copy !req
391. Don't mind the cameras.Copy !req
392. I'm gonna do it in the studio.
I'm trying to finish writing.Copy !req
393. I'mma try and get a shot at it.Copy !req
394. - Tell Poon to come get me when he's ready.
- All right.Copy !req
395. I gotta get that shit, right?
'Cause when I say, uh…Copy !req
396. Kanye West, one of the top-notch producers
and top-notch rappers in the game.Copy !req
397. I ain't gonna lie to you.
He surprised the shit out of me.Copy !req
398. So believe that, man.Copy !req
399. Everybody know about his production.
They about to find out about his skills.Copy !req
400. And believe me, the nigga got skills.Copy !req
401. I ain't lying.
That's coming from me all day.Copy !req
402. Breathe in. Breathe out.Copy !req
403. - Say your name. Um…Copy !req
404. And this is Luda. Velvet Jones.Copy !req
405. Max Headroom.Copy !req
406. Bronze Bridges.Copy !req
407. Whatever the hell
you wanna call my stinking name.Copy !req
408. - All right, fam. I'll be back.
- Peace.Copy !req
409. All right, boy!Copy !req
410. I'mma see y'all.Copy !req
411. So, you said, uh, Pharrell…
They just doing other records right now?Copy !req
412. They might not
let us tape and shit.Copy !req
413. - Huh?
- Turn it off?Copy !req
414. Let it roll, man. Fuck it.
If they tell us to stop it we stop.Copy !req
415. What up, boy?Copy !req
416. - I can't wait to hear your shit, man.Copy !req
417. I'mma spit this one.
I can put one on for y'all.Copy !req
418. For "Me and My Girlfriend."
Know how 50 be taking that song?Copy !req
419. If I said…Copy !req
420. Nigga. I didn't know! I didn't know!Copy !req
421. I still do the emergency aisle
every so often,Copy !req
422. - so I feel you.
- I didn't know.Copy !req
423. I didn't know.
I didn't know. I didn't know.Copy !req
424. I just thought it was the music.
I didn't know.Copy !req
425. I just thought it was the music.
I didn't know.Copy !req
426. I didn't know.Copy !req
427. You on some shit.Copy !req
428. This guy is like… I'm so impressed.Copy !req
429. Let me…Copy !req
430. Before I leave,
let me play "Through the Wire" for youCopy !req
431. to see your reaction.Copy !req
432. I want all y'all reactions.Copy !req
433. - No problem.
- It's talking about the accident.Copy !req
434. I made so many decisions sitting up
in that hospital for seven days.Copy !req
435. To just decipher
between the bullshit in my lifeCopy !req
436. and the direction I needed to go in.Copy !req
437. - My mouth was wired up at the time.Copy !req
438. Through the wire?Copy !req
439. "Through the Wire"?Copy !req
440. - Do you know that's what he was saying?
- Yeah. His shit was wired up.Copy !req
441. Did you get that in the beginning?Copy !req
442. He said he got to be rapping
through this wire. I heard it.Copy !req
443. Hey, hey…Copy !req
444. Nigga, that shit is phenomenal.Copy !req
445. - You think so?
- That shit is…Copy !req
446. - You got me.
- You one of my favorite artists.Copy !req
447. Oh, shit. Good looking.Copy !req
448. For real. That's real. That's real.Copy !req
449. And I only heard like two records.Copy !req
450. You gonna make it. And when you make it,
keep the same perspective.Copy !req
451. Still keep the same hunger.
You know what I mean?Copy !req
452. That hunger is to always be…Copy !req
453. "Man, I feel something.
I gotta go put it down."Copy !req
454. And you put it down.Copy !req
455. As long as you keep that…Copy !req
456. The conduit between
those two places clear,Copy !req
457. for that energy to come through,Copy !req
458. you gonna always be ill
for the rest of your life.Copy !req
459. I can tell when a nigga is really hot.Copy !req
460. But I can tell when they have
the potential to become complacent.Copy !req
461. Mmm-hmm.Copy !req
462. You do not have that.
But the only thing I'm saying is that…Copy !req
463. Once niggas tell you you hot,
still doubt yourself.Copy !req
464. Yeah.Copy !req
465. Very rarely do you encounterCopy !req
466. self-contained people.Copy !req
467. And not, "I can do everything myself."Copy !req
468. This man can do everything himself.Copy !req
469. That is truly gifted.Copy !req
470. The fact that this nigga choseCopy !req
471. to highlightCopy !req
472. this crazy, catastrophic thing
that happened to him about six weeks ago,Copy !req
473. that's real right there.Copy !req
474. He living it.Copy !req
475. - Hold on.Copy !req
476. The bling. This the bling ching.Copy !req
477. - Same punch.Copy !req
478. I feel like I'm the first of the hybridCopy !req
479. of the ice in a backpack.Copy !req
480. When I figured out… I had that accident
and I almost died and everything.Copy !req
481. So I was sitting up in a hospital bed
for the first seven days.Copy !req
482. And I was just be watching TV, man.Copy !req
483. I just came to some revelation.Copy !req
484. People were like,
"You almost died. What came from this?"Copy !req
485. And I just sit back and just decided
that I was gonna be the best…Copy !req
486. The best-dressed rapper in the game.Copy !req
487. Because I was watching nigga's gear.Copy !req
488. It's like crazy wack, you know?Copy !req
489. People used to tell me not to rap.Copy !req
490. Now, if I don't got the best voice
and I don't have this hard image,Copy !req
491. or I don't have a jail record or whatever.Copy !req
492. Some people are saying
these are reasons why I can't rap.Copy !req
493. Rap, for me, is just an extensionCopy !req
494. of the expression
I got from doing my music.Copy !req
495. I can only express about 50%.Copy !req
496. It's ideas that I have
that I can't make Jay-Z do.Copy !req
497. So I'm going there like,Copy !req
498. "How can even Kevin Liles
tell me that I can't be a rapper?"Copy !req
499. But he don't realize what I have in me.Copy !req
500. I have the ability to learn.Copy !req
501. I might not learn myself
up into DMX status by that time.Copy !req
502. But believe me,Copy !req
503. if I'm sitting in the studio with Jay-Z
and Ludacris and Scarface every day,Copy !req
504. you think I'mma learn?Copy !req
505. You think my beats sounded
like Blueprint when I started?Copy !req
506. I'm saying, this is the point I'm at.Copy !req
507. You can give me a deal for
200-something thousand dollars nowCopy !req
508. and I'mma make you $10 million later.
Or you can wait. You know what I'm saying?Copy !req
509. 'Cause what Def Jam does…
They wait until you proving yourself.Copy !req
510. But waiting wasn't an option.Copy !req
511. We needed to get Roc-A-Fella's attention.Copy !req
512. And the best way to do thatCopy !req
513. was to get the world
to know Kanye's story.Copy !req
514. We knew a music video
for "Through the Wire" could do just that.Copy !req
515. One idea for the video
was for me to capture people's reactionsCopy !req
516. while Kanye rapped the song to them
for the first time.Copy !req
517. Did you get that? Hit record?Copy !req
518. Yeah.Copy !req
519. Now this is the video right here.Copy !req
520. This the video?Copy !req
521. Whoa, shit!Copy !req
522. Nigga, that ain't never been done before!Copy !req
523. That's big business.
That ain't never done before.Copy !req
524. You made me wanna get in an accident.Copy !req
525. Rapping about my broke arm.Copy !req
526. Always spitting!Copy !req
527. Man, you spitting better
than niggas with they mouth open.Copy !req
528. Me and DeRay
came up together doing comedy back home.Copy !req
529. Chicago is a big part
of all of our stories.Copy !req
530. And Kanye wanted
that energy felt on his album.Copy !req
531. You want me to specifically write a song
for the kids to sing for graduation?Copy !req
532. I was like, "I got the perfect song
for the kids to sing."Copy !req
533. Kanye,
can I talk to you for a minute?Copy !req
534. Think you about to do something for
the kids for graduation to sing?Copy !req
535. - Damn. He killed that, man.Copy !req
536. One thing
about us guys from the Chi,Copy !req
537. whenever we crossed paths in other cities,Copy !req
538. we did what we could
to help each other win.Copy !req
539. - Hey, fast-forward. Jay-Z already made it.Copy !req
540. Fast-forward to my man.Copy !req
541. Welcome to the stage, my boy.Copy !req
542. We started comedy together in Chicago.Copy !req
543. Coodie, y'all. Give it up for Cood.Copy !req
544. My mother was one of the strict-ass…Copy !req
545. My mother was so strict, we couldn't say
words that wasn't curse word.Copy !req
546. You all know?
We couldn't say words like "lie."Copy !req
547. - What we had to say? "Telling a story."Copy !req
548. We couldn't say "booty."Copy !req
549. We had to say "behind."Copy !req
550. We couldn't say "motherfucker."Copy !req
551. - Oh.Copy !req
552. We had to say "Daddy."Copy !req
553. Hey, y'all,
I just came over to guest, man.Copy !req
554. I got my man Kanye West.Copy !req
555. I'm directing his video.
We doing a documentary.Copy !req
556. He big-time, y'all. Show him love.Copy !req
557. My name Coodie. Peace out, man.Copy !req
558. I'm a lyric critic, right there.Copy !req
559. Especially… I be knowing if
they speaking from they soul in that.Copy !req
560. Or if they speaking from the books.
That's the whole point of this album.Copy !req
561. We came to your crib in Jersey.Copy !req
562. You was talking about maybe
you can do something on the song, right?Copy !req
563. I was thinking…
I'm in my Chicago mentality.Copy !req
564. I'm thinking
we'll hook some shit up for later on.Copy !req
565. That's just where my head was at.
That's the way I thought, you know?Copy !req
566. Coodie was like,
"We gotta act quick, dawg."Copy !req
567. So when Coodie made that call,Copy !req
568. I wasn't trying to find a way here
and then just sit in the studio.Copy !req
569. I need to write this shit right now.Copy !req
570. Kanye a vibe cat.
He almost run away from a plan.Copy !req
571. But if he in the studio
and he vibing and say,Copy !req
572. "I want this on there right now,"Copy !req
573. that's a motherfucker there
that provide that. It's done.Copy !req
574. Manager's like,Copy !req
575. "Why can't you
just record it on the Pro ToolsCopy !req
576. in, uh, New York and then send it off?"Copy !req
577. I was like, "Nah, nigga."Copy !req
578. Something been created out here.
He's like, "I got to be there."Copy !req
579. There's some type of
energy that's going on thatCopy !req
580. everybody that just walks in the studio…Copy !req
581. This shit just be coming
out incredible right now.Copy !req
582. Whoo!Copy !req
583. That shit is serious.Copy !req
584. Send those plaques, man.Copy !req
585. - Send the plaques, dawg.Copy !req
586. Send the plaques.Copy !req
587. Man. Crazy, dawg. Crazy.Copy !req
588. Everyone that was a part
of The College DropoutCopy !req
589. knew we were watching
the making of a classic album.Copy !req
590. We made sure
to enjoy every moment.Copy !req
591. But it was frustratingCopy !req
592. when Roc-A-Fella
kept refusing to commit to a release date.Copy !req
593. And without Dame Dash's support,
nothing was gonna change.Copy !req
594. I know Roots.Copy !req
595. There's my nigga.Copy !req
596. How are you?Copy !req
597. - What's the deal?
- Aight.Copy !req
598. Hey, Ashley. Tape him taping me.Copy !req
599. Why don't you stand right here
and then you can face all of us?Copy !req
600. Thanks.Copy !req
601. I'm glad y'all happy about it, though.Copy !req
602. I just want to see her do well,
you know?Copy !req
603. I'm down, so…Copy !req
604. If you're down, I'm down.Copy !req
605. - We got your lawyer's information.
- Yeah.Copy !req
606. That was some funny shit.Copy !req
607. He is right there.Copy !req
608. I'm gonna roll out.
Y'all can stay though.Copy !req
609. Come on, Bigg.Copy !req
610. We could all feel it.Copy !req
611. Kanye's album
wasn't a priority to Roc-A-Fella.Copy !req
612. Despite all the great music
he was creating,Copy !req
613. it felt like the accident
had killed all the momentumCopy !req
614. he had built with the Roc.Copy !req
615. Leaving him back
to making beats to support his career.Copy !req
616. Kanye, the song is coming together.Copy !req
617. Yeah, I mean,
these guys can do everything. I'm just…Copy !req
618. Where they at?
Do they have the room set up?Copy !req
619. Uh, they're back here. Let's see.Copy !req
620. Nappy Roots studio.Copy !req
621. With Kanye West.Copy !req
622. Fish Scales,
Prophet, Big V holding it down.Copy !req
623. - Bring it back.Copy !req
624. - What is this?
- Kanye's documentary.Copy !req
625. What is it anyway? What's it for?Copy !req
626. "Through the Wire." For the video,
we just use pieces of the documentary.Copy !req
627. - That's dope.
- Yeah.Copy !req
628. - We told him.
- Yeah.Copy !req
629. We got this part with Pharrell.
He hear the song and he just go crazy.Copy !req
630. Ran out the room
and start singing…Copy !req
631. "Through the wire."
But it looked ill on the camera.Copy !req
632. We got this one comedian DeRay, he's like,Copy !req
633. "Man, you made me
wanna get in an accident."Copy !req
634. Now that we had all the scenes
for the "Through the Wire" video,Copy !req
635. we needed help pulling off the vision.Copy !req
636. So we reached out to Chike Ozah,Copy !req
637. a director and graphic artist
who we met in the halls of MTV,Copy !req
638. to help us make it happen.Copy !req
639. Trying to do a good job
between me, Coodie and Kanye,Copy !req
640. that we're on the same exact page.Copy !req
641. I cannot find anyone
to redo my logo for me.Copy !req
642. I went to art school
and now I don't know any artists.Copy !req
643. Any artists.Copy !req
644. Let's look at the storyboards.Copy !req
645. See what we got.Copy !req
646. Silent in three, dawg.Copy !req
647. - Quiet on the set, please.Copy !req
648. Hey, light… Light, folks.Copy !req
649. Went for hours and hours
'cause he ran out of money and time.Copy !req
650. Gotta call it a wrap.Copy !req
651. No, we gotta get it right, Chike.
Come on. This is it. This is the one.Copy !req
652. That's how it go.Copy !req
653. - Chike.
- Yo.Copy !req
654. Was some old shot
of Pharrell. He dancing.Copy !req
655. Then it pull out.Copy !req
656. When it pull out like this Pharrell
will end up over there or something.Copy !req
657. 'Cause it's the motion that's…
And you see this.Copy !req
658. Action.Copy !req
659. Knowing he couldn't
rely on the label,Copy !req
660. Kanye did everything in his power
to build his own buzz.Copy !req
661. Um…Copy !req
662. Aight, this my demo for Def Poetry Jam.Copy !req
663. I'm gonna start off with this joint I got,
it's called "Self-Conscious."Copy !req
664. This my next selection.
It's called "Hey, Mama."Copy !req
665. And hopefully,
y'all can help me out with it.Copy !req
666. - Let's try it out.Copy !req
667. Man. Will you turn your phone off, man?Copy !req
668. More than money or fame,Copy !req
669. what Kanye wanted most
was for people to hear the musicCopy !req
670. that he was making for his album.Copy !req
671. So he decided
to put together his own mixtapesCopy !req
672. to get out to the streets.Copy !req
673. - Yeah. No doubt.Copy !req
674. - Peace.
- Thank you, cuh.Copy !req
675. - All right, thug.
- Mos, for sure.Copy !req
676. I'mma say one rap
while they leaving and shitCopy !req
677. 'cause I know you about to bounce.Copy !req
678. Wait a sec.Copy !req
679. - I love this nigga, man.Copy !req
680. I love this nigga right here, man.Copy !req
681. Yo, you should do that shit with me, then.Copy !req
682. I wanna do a whole joint with you, man.Copy !req
683. West and Def.Copy !req
684. - Mos West.
- Mos West.Copy !req
685. From Chicago, Illinois, please give it up
for the future of hip-hop, Kanye West.Copy !req
686. This morning,
I spent a lot of, um, time, like,Copy !req
687. trying to pick out my outfit
'cause I'm really into clothes.Copy !req
688. I'mma be
the best-dressed rapper out in the game.Copy !req
689. - So, uh, you know, I got my…Copy !req
690. I know. What?Copy !req
691. - A whole lotta…
- Hey, Mama.Copy !req
692. Ah…Copy !req
693. That's my favorite song.Copy !req
694. It sure is.Copy !req
695. Kanye, that was
so magnificent what you did.Copy !req
696. - For real?
- You snapped.Copy !req
697. I'm telling you. You did.Copy !req
698. - I was… Did you hear me?
- I did.Copy !req
699. I was like,
"Kanye! All right! Give it up!"Copy !req
700. You said some heavy
political stuff in between.Copy !req
701. Yeah. 'Cause then
everybody thought it was gonna be weak.Copy !req
702. But you said,
"I wanna be the best-dressed rapper."Copy !req
703. And then you came on
with another whole type of rap.Copy !req
704. About, you know, being self-conscious.Copy !req
705. Yeah.Copy !req
706. It was together.Copy !req
707. I was like, "Oh, snap."Copy !req
708. After filming for Def Poetry Jam,Copy !req
709. it felt like things were finally starting
to move in the right direction for Kanye.Copy !req
710. We were almost done
with the video for "Through the Wire."Copy !req
711. And with no budget,Copy !req
712. Chike was getting us in at MTV after hoursCopy !req
713. so we could
use their equipment to finish it.Copy !req
714. And I couldn't wait for Mama West
to see what we'd been working on.Copy !req
715. Yeah, it's where we shooting the video.Copy !req
716. Putting it down.Copy !req
717. That you on there, huh, Kanye?Copy !req
718. This my mother right here.Copy !req
719. - Hello.
- Hi. Nice to meet you.Copy !req
720. What's that you're doing, Kanye?Copy !req
721. Which one? Which video is this?Copy !req
722. - "Through the Wire."
- Oh, really?Copy !req
723. Hey, where's that one? The picture
that I took of him with the big jaw?Copy !req
724. That.Copy !req
725. That's my handiwork, isn't it, Kanye?Copy !req
726. - You took that picture?
- Yeah.Copy !req
727. - It's gonna get in there real nice.Copy !req
728. That's right on the part
about Tom Cruise from Vanilla Sky.Copy !req
729. That's when you on there.Copy !req
730. Can you make them…
You can't make them move some more?Copy !req
731. - Yeah.
- They gonna be moving more.Copy !req
732. It's off the beat of the song anyway.
We gotta track it to the song.Copy !req
733. There's me.Copy !req
734. Add more film grain to it
to make it look a little bit more like…Copy !req
735. Turn around, please.Copy !req
736. I need to do
a segmental osteotomyCopy !req
737. because his bite is not perfect.Copy !req
738. The only way to do that is to break
between the canines and the bicuspids.Copy !req
739. He's got plenty of room in there.Copy !req
740. - Yep.
- Or down here.Copy !req
741. We can schedule you for surgery,
but we have to plan on it ahead of time.Copy !req
742. So when do you want to do this?Copy !req
743. 6th of April?Copy !req
744. Well, it can't be that early.Copy !req
745. Give me a month or two of advance notice.Copy !req
746. For real?Copy !req
747. This is one of my main problems.Copy !req
748. - How far this sticks out.
- Hmm.Copy !req
749. And it didn't used to stick out like this.Copy !req
750. But we cannot bring that down.Copy !req
751. There's no way to bring it in?Copy !req
752. 'Cause this is messing me up.Copy !req
753. You know what I'm saying? Visually.Copy !req
754. 'Cause I'm an entertainer.Copy !req
755. I'm an attractive guy, and this is like…Copy !req
756. I'd have to cut over there.Copy !req
757. It would leave a scar.Copy !req
758. Have to cut over here.
But you'll have a scar here.Copy !req
759. - For real?
- And there's the nerves there. It's risky.Copy !req
760. You may end up losing facial expression.Copy !req
761. - I wouldn't do that.
- Wow.Copy !req
762. It had been
five months since the accident.Copy !req
763. And after working so hard
to get his career back on track,Copy !req
764. we were hoping for some good news.Copy !req
765. But the surgery Kanye neededCopy !req
766. would put him out of pocket
for way too long.Copy !req
767. With all the plans he had
for getting his album out,Copy !req
768. he decided not to get the surgery,Copy !req
769. knowing he couldn't afford to miss a beat.Copy !req
770. One, two, three, and…Copy !req
771. Don't go downward. All right? Right?Copy !req
772. Y'all sing your part one time.Copy !req
773. One, two, three and…Copy !req
774. No.Copy !req
775. Get the melody.Copy !req
776. Go and learn your parts.Copy !req
777. One, two three, and…Copy !req
778. All right. First, you still gotta
watch the timing on the…Copy !req
779. All right? Right there. Y'all doing okay.Copy !req
780. Let's watch that other note.Copy !req
781. I'm thinking, what if we did
unison for the first linesCopy !req
782. and then brought harmony
on the second half of the chorusCopy !req
783. and separated it? Like if you said…Copy !req
784. - Then everybody come in…Copy !req
785. Y'all holding it too long.Copy !req
786. - Watch this. All right?
- Somebody sang "it all."Copy !req
787. At "for a chance to be with you."Copy !req
788. One, two…Copy !req
789. All right. Good.Copy !req
790. Coodie!Copy !req
791. Excuse me, please. Quiet down!Copy !req
792. Can everybody see the screen?Copy !req
793. If you're standing up
and y'all too tall, cop a squat.Copy !req
794. This some real family shit.
This some old-school shit.Copy !req
795. I know y'all can relate.Copy !req
796. Man, I'm happy to see
that everybody came out on one day noticeCopy !req
797. and make me feel likeCopy !req
798. I got a lot of love
out here in New York City.Copy !req
799. Like how we got back in the Chi.Copy !req
800. And I don't know if you know this,Copy !req
801. but my album keeps on getting pushed back.Copy !req
802. All right.Copy !req
803. And I don't know if you know this,
but my marketing budget is now open.Copy !req
804. I don't know if you know this,Copy !req
805. but they actually haven't paidCopy !req
806. for me to even have
the black-and-white shotCopy !req
807. that people get
when they originally get signed.Copy !req
808. I got signed a year ago.Copy !req
809. I don't know if you know thatCopy !req
810. the reason why I make tracks at this pointCopy !req
811. is to have enough money
to pay for my T-shirts.Copy !req
812. Is to have enough money
to pay for my mixtapes.Copy !req
813. Damn. Can we close that door?Copy !req
814. What was that, fool?Copy !req
815. What up?Copy !req
816. Let me get my favorite part…Copy !req
817. I gotta get my woof on quick
and then we gonna set up the video.Copy !req
818. - Okay.
- Okay.Copy !req
819. Um…Copy !req
820. This video cost me.Copy !req
821. Me.Copy !req
822. $33,000.Copy !req
823. That I paid for out of my pocket.Copy !req
824. Started off with them telling me,
"We could do it for $8,000."Copy !req
825. We put this together to get the buzz going
so that I can get me a release date.Copy !req
826. You know what I mean?Copy !req
827. This is Coodie right here.
He shot all the footage.Copy !req
828. - Yeah, Coodie!Copy !req
829. This turnout…
All we did was two-way people.Copy !req
830. And we were expecting 30 people.Copy !req
831. And over 200 people ended up coming out.Copy !req
832. So, man, that's love out here.
I want everybody to give it up.Copy !req
833. A new video.Copy !req
834. What's the new video?Copy !req
835. It's yours, it's Kanye West's video.Copy !req
836. - Okay.
- Okay, can I get some change?Copy !req
837. After filming Kanye
for over a year…Copy !req
838. …after months of sneaking into MTV,Copy !req
839. after dedicating countless hours
to our first music video…Copy !req
840. That night, it felt like we made it.Copy !req
841. Dame saw the full vision at last.Copy !req
842. And soon, millions of people did too.Copy !req
843. Welcome back to TRL.Copy !req
844. This is the top 20 video countdown.Copy !req
845. You're watching BET's 106 & Park…Copy !req
846. - Kanye West.
- "Through the Wire."Copy !req
847. "Through the Wire"
would be one of the top music videosCopy !req
848. on the countdowns for weeks.Copy !req
849. And thanks to that,
Kanye got his release date.Copy !req
850. And Roc-A-Fella
opened up the budget for his album.Copy !req
851. And introducing this next artist,
I've got a story, I won't be up here long,Copy !req
852. but I want you to know
how we feel about this man at the Roc.Copy !req
853. When he used to come and make his beats,
he used to be like, "Yo, I rap."Copy !req
854. I'm not gonna lie,
I never paid much attention.Copy !req
855. I was like, "All right."Copy !req
856. "Stick to the beats, kid."
You know? That kind of thing?Copy !req
857. What I thought he was gonna doCopy !req
858. was make an album
and put a bunch of guests on it.Copy !req
859. But obviously,
he had something different in mind.Copy !req
860. I liked
that he never tried to be like anybody.Copy !req
861. He was intent on being original
and doing things his way.Copy !req
862. And on another level,
he's always controlled his own destiny.Copy !req
863. We had worked so hard
to introduce Kanye to the worldCopy !req
864. and now the world could understand why.Copy !req
865. Without further ado,
let's make some noise for Chi-Town's own…Copy !req
866. …my nigga, I'm proud of him, Kanye West.Copy !req
867. I thought the chorus was saying
"Jesus" in the background.Copy !req
868. Yo, Coodie.Copy !req
869. - That's what it is saying.
- Okay!Copy !req
870. - Jesus walk.
- All right.Copy !req
871. - God show me…
- All right.Copy !req
872. You know I'mma
let y'all do mad videos, right?Copy !req
873. - Yeah.
- But "Jesus Walks"…Copy !req
874. Man, dawg.Copy !req
875. I gotta get Hype, man.Copy !req
876. - Hype?
- Yeah.Copy !req
877. I gotta get Hype Williams, dawg.Copy !req
878. - You know I love—
- Do what you gotta do.Copy !req
879. Dawg… The videos is dopeCopy !req
880. but I gotta get Hype to do
the 15 minute movie for this, dawg.Copy !req
881. That's what you gotta do,
you gotta do it.Copy !req
882. But you know I fuck with y'all, you know?Copy !req
883. - I fuck with you though.
- Hey.Copy !req
884. Make sure we cool, but, no.Copy !req
885. Man, I mean, but, G…Copy !req
886. I mean, if you think
he could do the job—Copy !req
887. I mean, you know Hype Williams.Copy !req
888. He like the Jay-Z of that shit.Copy !req
889. He like the Eminem.Copy !req
890. What do you think, though?Copy !req
891. I mean, I think we the next niggas,
you know what I'm saying?Copy !req
892. But the thing is… just…Copy !req
893. This is the next level shit,Copy !req
894. but this is Hype…Copy !req
895. That shit is Hype Williams.Copy !req
896. That's like
one of the old Hype Williams videos.Copy !req
897. - Those are…
- True.Copy !req
898. I mean…Copy !req
899. I just… Hey…Copy !req
900. I just…Copy !req
901. I'm gonna get the call like, "Coodie!"Copy !req
902. - "Fuck that…"
- Nigga fucked up.Copy !req
903. Nigga fucked the video up!Copy !req
904. "Hype done fucked it."Copy !req
905. "Coodie, fuck that."Copy !req
906. He's gonna get to the set.
Hype will have his own style.Copy !req
907. Kanye gonna be like,
"What the fuck is this?"Copy !req
908. "I wanted it to be like this."Copy !req
909. You know it's gonna happen…Copy !req
910. We gonna be flying out to Chicago
and making it right.Copy !req
911. - You're all gonna have on hoodies…
- Right.Copy !req
912. Wanna hear that one back? Play it back.Copy !req
913. The New Year
always brings change.Copy !req
914. It's everyone's chance to start over.Copy !req
915. To begin again.Copy !req
916. What's up, y'all?Copy !req
917. Oh, yeah, the cameraman is always here.
Happy New Year, cameraman!Copy !req
918. Happy New Year.Copy !req
919. This is the master bedroom.
This is the master bathroom.Copy !req
920. If y'all wondering who filming,
this is me right here.Copy !req
921. All of my sexy self. Got my glasses on.Copy !req
922. You know. A little something something.Copy !req
923. - Happy New Year!
- Happy New Year!Copy !req
924. - Happy New Year!
- Happy New Year!Copy !req
925. Happy New Year!Copy !req
926. Coodie Coo!Copy !req
927. Channel Zero still in effect, man…
Hustle Period. Uh, Mind State. Chi-Town.Copy !req
928. Man, it's real big. '04, baby. We made it.Copy !req
929. Have a prosperous New Year
that brings a lot of love,Copy !req
930. a lot of peace, a lot of money.Copy !req
931. Whatcha gonna do different this year
than last year?Copy !req
932. What am I gonna do this year
better than last year?Copy !req
933. How can I make it better?Copy !req
934. You're right.Copy !req
935. It's just gonna get better.Copy !req
936. It's just gonna get better.Copy !req
937. Everybody who's been with us,
like you, Coodie, like Greg.Copy !req
938. Where's Greg?Copy !req
939. Uh… Everybody who's been with Kanye.Copy !req
940. We're gonna make it. We're gonna do it.Copy !req
941. 2004 is gonna be our best year ever.Copy !req
942. And that's what our resolution is.Copy !req
943. To make this the best year that ever was
for everybody on the team.Copy !req
944. - Yeah!
- All right!Copy !req
945. - 2004!
- Happy New Year!Copy !req
946. - Happy New Year, everybody.
- All right.Copy !req
947. From this point on,
none of us knew exactly what to expect.Copy !req
948. - We got ten…
- Ten, nine, eight, seven…Copy !req
949. With the album
finally coming out…Copy !req
950. …it felt like
our lives were about to change.Copy !req
951. …two. One!Copy !req
952. Forever.Copy !req
953. Kanye!Copy !req
954. - Kanye!
- Kanye!Copy !req
955. - Who do you want?
- Kanye!Copy !req
956. - Who you came to see?
- Kanye!Copy !req
957. - Who do you wanna see?
- Kanye!Copy !req
958. - I can't hear you!
- Kanye!Copy !req
959. Silence!Copy !req
960. Our next guest
is an acclaimed record producerCopy !req
961. whose debut solo CD
is titled The College Dropout.Copy !req
962. Please welcome Kanye West, everyone.Copy !req
963. Instead of just producing,Copy !req
964. Kanye West is generating
the biggest buzz in the bizCopy !req
965. because he's writing
and recording his own hits.Copy !req
966. Part showman,
part businessman and all talent,Copy !req
967. rap artist Kanye West
will take center stage…Copy !req
968. …so hot right now.
Give it up for Kanye West.Copy !req
969. Tonight's musical guest.
Make some noiseCopy !req
970. for Kanye West.Copy !req
971. I used this entire album
as, uh, my rehabilitation.Copy !req
972. Instead of staying at the hotel,
I snuck in.Copy !req
973. And I made songs that inspired me.
Songs that gave me life.Copy !req
974. I feel like this album
was kind of like my angelCopy !req
975. that helped heal me.Copy !req
976. It revived my spirits.Copy !req
977. The impact of The College Dropout
forever changed the culture.Copy !req
978. But it felt like the bigger Kanye got,Copy !req
979. the further we grew apart.Copy !req
980. And when Kanye went on tour without me,Copy !req
981. I knew I needed to start
making time for myself.Copy !req
982. My mother and father are visiting.Copy !req
983. Go ahead, Daddy.Copy !req
984. Maybe this thing.
I get you all at this thing.Copy !req
985. Fine.Copy !req
986. One thing my mother and father taught meCopy !req
987. was that everything happens for a reason.Copy !req
988. So no matter what, always keep moving.Copy !req
989. With Kanye out on the road,Copy !req
990. other artists started reaching out
for me and Chike to direct their videos.Copy !req
991. - Look at your man, Coodie.Copy !req
992. Any videos we do,
we're writing that motherfucking shit.Copy !req
993. - That's how it goes. Tell 'em, Chike.
- Yes, sir.Copy !req
994. So, this is the first day, Coodie.Copy !req
995. The first day
of the John Legend Get Lifted album.Copy !req
996. Whoo!Copy !req
997. I'mma go out there
and I'mma do my thing.Copy !req
998. 'Cause I already know that
I ain't really doing this.Copy !req
999. It's God doing it. He directs.Copy !req
1000. So I'm just going to hold the cameraCopy !req
1001. and then he gonna be
like, "Point it over here."Copy !req
1002. And I'm like… "Point it over there."Copy !req
1003. "Point it over here."Copy !req
1004. Yeah. God is doing it.
God is directing this.Copy !req
1005. G-O-D.Copy !req
1006. While me and Chike
were making a name for ourselves,Copy !req
1007. Kanye's third single, "Jesus Walks,"
became a cultural phenomenon.Copy !req
1008. Before his accident,
I wrote a video idea for the song.Copy !req
1009. But Kanye was still set on
using more established directors.Copy !req
1010. Man, Coodie called me.Copy !req
1011. He was like, "We shooting 'Jesus Walks.'"Copy !req
1012. I'm like, "Didn't Kanye
already shoot 'Jesus Walks'?"Copy !req
1013. He was like, "He didn't like it."
I thought he saw another version.Copy !req
1014. "He didn't like that one either."
I'm like, "Whoa."Copy !req
1015. He's like, "We're gonna shoot
another one in Chicago."Copy !req
1016. I'm like, "Straight up? Word."
"Kanye wants you to play Jesus."Copy !req
1017. I'm like, "What?"Copy !req
1018. "Yeah, Dave Chappelle
didn't want to be Jesus."Copy !req
1019. So I'm like, "Straight up.
Why don't you get J. Ivy to do it?"Copy !req
1020. He was like,
"No. He don't want a Black Jesus."Copy !req
1021. "He want a mixed JesusCopy !req
1022. so he don't got to argue about
whether Jesus was Black or white."Copy !req
1023. I'm the only mixed kid, so, hey,
I got cast as Jesus. Bada boom, bada bing.Copy !req
1024. Acting debut.
Watch out, Denzel.Copy !req
1025. - So just follow them? That's all?
- Smooth move follow.Copy !req
1026. - Yeah.
- Okay.Copy !req
1027. - Where the…
- Be getting…Copy !req
1028. How do you wanna…
We should pull it on a backdrop.Copy !req
1029. On a different backdrop.Copy !req
1030. Let's do a quick run-through.
Go ahead. Dave, let's just do the move.Copy !req
1031. You gonna focus pull
all the way to Coodie over there?Copy !req
1032. - Jesus knows all.
- Let's just do a test. Go.Copy !req
1033. Jesus behind the camera.
That's what I'm talking about.Copy !req
1034. Jesus knows all.Copy !req
1035. Rolling. Action.Copy !req
1036. Kanye West is here.Copy !req
1037. His debut album,
The College Dropout, has earned himCopy !req
1038. ten Grammy nominations,
including Best New Artist,Copy !req
1039. Song of the Year,
Album of the Year and more.Copy !req
1040. I am pleased to have him here
at this table for the first timeCopy !req
1041. as we look ahead of the Grammys.Copy !req
1042. Hey.Copy !req
1043. I need you to help me clear this.
I got a Ray Charles sample.Copy !req
1044. You was fly from a young nigga.Copy !req
1045. If I told you this back in '98,
you wouldn't have believed it.Copy !req
1046. We gonna be on MTV
doing an interview with Puff.Copy !req
1047. That shit crazy, man.Copy !req
1048. We used to call him you, man.Copy !req
1049. - Yeah?
- Word. Yeah.Copy !req
1050. I see a lot of him in me.Copy !req
1051. For real.Copy !req
1052. A lot of me in him.
Vice-versa.Copy !req
1053. That's some real shit, man.Copy !req
1054. It's been incredible
to see him work. You know?Copy !req
1055. The way he works… I call him "Boy Genius."Copy !req
1056. "Little Quincy Jones."
You know what I'm saying?Copy !req
1057. You guys see? We got similar tastes.Copy !req
1058. What would be
the most meaningful thingCopy !req
1059. to happen Grammy night for you?Copy !req
1060. I always wanted the opportunity to speak.Copy !req
1061. Even if I lost.
Just give me a chance to speak.Copy !req
1062. That's all I want.Copy !req
1063. I just want to talk.
I wanna go up and thank people.Copy !req
1064. 'Cause I'm working on my speech
and, you know…Copy !req
1065. If I'm not able to say it
at the press room,Copy !req
1066. I'll have to say it in every interview
all the way completely through.Copy !req
1067. You both have a tendencyCopy !req
1068. to do a lot of talking,
but you guys deliver.Copy !req
1069. So it's okay.Copy !req
1070. - You know—
- Don't you love it, though?Copy !req
1071. Right?Copy !req
1072. What happened to the Muhammad Alis?Copy !req
1073. What happened to the rock stars
in the game?Copy !req
1074. What's up with all this, "Thank you"?Copy !req
1075. What are you supposed to do? Just bow?Copy !req
1076. "Thank you very much."Copy !req
1077. That's… Dawg!
I'm saying I came from nothing.Copy !req
1078. And right now,
I'm sitting next to Puff on MTV.Copy !req
1079. And I'm finna go home and call somebody,
like, "Dawg, do you know what I just did?"Copy !req
1080. It's to the point
where I can't even get credit for nothing.Copy !req
1081. I've been always trying…
I spent 400 bucks on thisCopy !req
1082. just to be like,
"Nigga, you ain't up on this."Copy !req
1083. You ain't up on this!Copy !req
1084. I'm in the studio with Puff!Copy !req
1085. What up, Ma?Copy !req
1086. - How you doing?
- Okay.Copy !req
1087. How are you doing? Nice to see you.Copy !req
1088. Okay.Copy !req
1089. Y'all got some big stuff going?Copy !req
1090. - Yeah.
- Great.Copy !req
1091. If someone
told you a year agoCopy !req
1092. that today you'd be sitting here
nominated for ten Grammy Awards,Copy !req
1093. would you have believed it?Copy !req
1094. No. What happened isCopy !req
1095. I actually told other people
and they didn't believe it.Copy !req
1096. We gonna lift you up
with the help of this year'sCopy !req
1097. most nominated artist, Kanye West…Copy !req
1098. I'm interested in how you,Copy !req
1099. and why you,
believe all of this has happened.Copy !req
1100. I just think it was in God's plan.Copy !req
1101. I think He just has me here for a reason.
That I have something to say.Copy !req
1102. And there's people
that might be better programmers,Copy !req
1103. better rappers, but where I think
I really won is I had the heart.Copy !req
1104. Heart was the first thing
I ever noticed about Kanye.Copy !req
1105. I always believed his purpose
would take him to these heights.Copy !req
1106. Motivated by faith, we climbed together.Copy !req
1107. And on this night,
Kanye arrived at the top of the mountain.Copy !req
1108. And the Grammy goes to…Copy !req
1109. The College Dropout, Kanye West.Copy !req
1110. Whoo!Copy !req
1111. When I had my accident…Copy !req
1112. I found out at that moment,Copy !req
1113. nothing in life is promised except death.Copy !req
1114. If you have the opportunity
to play this game of life,Copy !req
1115. you need to appreciate every moment.Copy !req
1116. A lot of people don't appreciate
their moment until it's passed.Copy !req
1117. Right now is my time and my moment.Copy !req
1118. Thanks to the fans,
thanks to the accident, thanks to God,Copy !req
1119. thanks to Roc-A-Fella,
Jay-Z, Dame Dash, G,Copy !req
1120. my mother, Rhymefest,
everyone that's helped me.Copy !req
1121. And I plan… I plan to celebrate.Copy !req
1122. I plan to celebrate and scream
and pop champagne every chance I get,Copy !req
1123. 'cause I'm at the Grammys, baby!Copy !req
1124. I know, I know.
Everybody asked me the question.Copy !req
1125. They want to know, "Well, Kanye…"Copy !req
1126. "I know he's going to wile out
and do something crazy."Copy !req
1127. Everybody wants to know
what I would do if I didn't win.Copy !req
1128. I guess we'll never know.Copy !req
1129. When I started
filming Kanye West,Copy !req
1130. the goal was to see how far
his dreams would take him.Copy !req
1131. Now that he dominated the Grammys,Copy !req
1132. I thought we had the ending
to the documentary.Copy !req
1133. But I had no idea
where life would take us next.Copy !req
1134. I had heard that you were
really out of control.Copy !req
1135. George Bush doesn't care
about Black people.Copy !req
1136. Taylor, I'mma let you finish,
but Beyoncé had…Copy !req
1137. You already got the answer!Copy !req
1138. For 400 years? That sounds like a choice.Copy !req
1139. Mr. Kanye West.Copy !req
1140. You a genius!Copy !req
1141. I just told you
who I thought I was…Copy !req
1142. A god!Copy !req
1143. Kanye! Kanye!Copy !req
1144. Don't tweet that?Copy !req
