Fringe 1x16

1. "And the bear came across a fox.

2. And the fox said,

3. bear, bear, stop right there.

4. There's a monster up ahead.'"

5. Okay, bedtime.

6. No, no, this is the last book.

7. Oh, I thought that the last book

8. was the last book.

9. We are almost done.

10. You guys work well together, and I dot like it.

11. Hello... Hey, it's Peter.

12. Hi. What's wrong?

13. "What's wrong"?

14. Is there something wrong?

15. No. Why, what's wrong with you?

16. Uh, nothing.

17. I assumed there was an emergency.

18. Nope. No emergency.

19. What's up?

20. Nothing, I was actually calling for Rachel.

21. Is she there?

22. Yeah.

23. Actually, it's kinda stupid.

24. I can call back later if you guys

25. are in the middle of something.

26. No, no, she's right here.

27. Uh, Rach, it's for you.

28. It's Peter.

29. Hey.

30. Yeah, did you remember it or not?

31. Are you serious?

32. What is it?

33. Aunt Liv, can we keep on going?

34. Yeah.

35. All right, hold on.

36. Hold on a second.

37. Hold on.

38. Uh, "but I don't see any monster,"

39. the bear said.

40. And he kept walking.

41. "Because he didn't believe there was a monster up ahead."

42. Aunt Liv?

43. Yeah?

44. Monsters aren't real, right?

45. No, sweetheart.

46. They're not.

47. The cameras are dark.

48. Let's go. We gotta move.

49. I told you, relax. The alarm's disabled.

50. There might be a backup system.

51. No, there isn't.

52. I checked all the security.

53. Why don't you finish up in here?

54. I want to see what's behind this door.

55. Come on, Jonathan.

56. We've gotta get outta here.

57. Hold on a second.

58. Stop right there!

59. You should be arrested for what you do.

60. We let them all go. All of them.

61. These animals deserve better.

62. How would you like to be caged up and tortured?

63. Shame on you for what you do.

64. These are living creatures and you murder them.

65. You're a killer.

66. Get out now. All of you get out!

67. You should be arrested.

68. Experimenting on animals is a crime.

69. Somebody shut her up!

70. Let's go! Let's go!

71. Let's go. Come on!

72. Jonathan!

73. Let's go. Come on, go!

74. What the hell was that?

75. That thing, that thing grabbed that guy.

76. I'm freaking out, man.

77. What do we do? Do we call the police?

78. We can't leave Jonathan. We have to go back.

79. No, no, no.

80. This is crazy.

81. What is that?

82. I don't know! I can't see!

83. Chris?

84. What did that?

85. One cream, one sugar.

86. Thank you, Peter.

87. Peter, no!

88. Walter, we talked about sharing.

89. That's not to eat. You've ruined it.

90. It's an omelet.

91. It's not an omelet!

92. Oh, my... ugh!

93. Walter, why is there an ear in the omelet?

94. It was an experiment.

95. It was a protein-rich incubator.

96. It was growing.

97. It was growing? That's perfect.

98. No, it's not perfect. You just ruined it.

99. And you could have died, had you eaten it.

100. Hello? Really?

101. You know, maybe in the future

102. you could do me a favor and just put a sign

103. warning me not to confuse your toxic playthings

104. with breakfast.

105. Maybe you should get your own breakfast

106. and not poach mine.

107. Dad, that is hardly the point.

108. Remember yesterday when I nearly washed my face

109. in a sink full of acid?

110. Or three days ago you hooked gene up

111. to the solar panels and I nearly electrocuted myself.

112. This is a lab.

113. You're the one who should be careful.

114. I trust you look both ways when you cross the street.

115. Yeah, but the difference being that if I don't,

116. I'm the only one who gets flattened.

117. You, Walter, you live in a society

118. with other people.

119. Hey. What?

120. That was Olivia.

121. Local P.D. found the vehicle a couple hours ago.

122. Three bodies inside, two male, one female.

123. And the cause of death?

124. They appear to have been attacked by an animal,

125. but the coroner's never seen anything like it.

126. Whatever did this

127. doesn't appear to be indigenous to the area.

128. Well, wherever it is indigenous to, I don't wanna live there.

129. Oh, interesting.

130. Some would say disgusting.

131. Whatever did this had enormous claws,

132. like those of a bear or of one of the big cats.

133. The spread of the digits, v-shaped.

134. It's too wide for one of those creatures.

135. Configuration closer to that of an eagle.

136. Of course much, much larger.

137. Hey, we're looking for big bird.

138. Don't be ridiculous.

139. Perhaps a pterodactyl.

140. Have evidence techs bag their I. Ds?

141. No, I don't think they were carrying any.

142. Maybe this is why.

143. That's a Brockhage lock pick gun,

144. they work great.

145. A little bulky for my taste, but...

146. Looks like these kids were out for more than a joyride.

147. Mmm, this is quite delicious.

148. Where did you get that?

149. In the car, uneaten.

150. What is the matter with you?

151. Oh, forgive my son.

152. He's been in a mood all day.

153. I just figured "don't eat the evidence", went without saying.

154. I assure you it has no bearing on the case.

155. Four drinks.

156. Three bodies.

157. There were four people in this group.

158. We're missing a body.

159. Have we searched the woods?

160. We had canine units canvass the area.

161. We didn't turn up any other bodies.

162. Well, maybe one of them got away and survived.

163. If they did, they could answer a lot of questions.

164. I'm gonna check local hospitals,

165. see if the emergency room has anything that lines up with an animal attack.

166. All this stuff is from Junkie Genie's.

167. It's a fast food joint up by M.I.T.

168. Food is crap.

169. But it's cheap, and it's open late.

170. So it's always filled with undergrads.

171. I thought you falsified your degree from M.I.T.

172. Yeah, Peter, why commit to anything

173. when you can just fake it?

174. I spent some nights there.

175. Maybe we should go through the student database

176. and see if we can I.D. any of the victims.

177. I understand Chris Hawkins lives here.

178. Olivia Dunham, FBI.

179. Yeah, um, Chris isn't here.

180. I know, but would you mind if I ask you a few questions?

181. I'm Carl.

182. And no, I would love it.

183. Come on in.

184. Thank you.

185. Oh, yeah, that isn't mine.

186. That was left here by a stranger.

187. Can I get you something?

188. Orange juice? Candy?

189. How 'bout some pants?

190. Yeah, I can do that.

191. So how well do you know Chris?

192. Oh, you know, okay.

193. Kinda,"Hey, how's it going?"Nice, whatever."

194. "What's for dinner?"

195. That kinda stuff.

196. Why, is he in some kind of trouble?

197. I'm not at liberty to say.

198. Oh, no, no, no.

199. Just 'cause he doesn't seem like the type,

200. you know, to get into FBI kinda trouble.

201. Why do you say that?

202. He's always making flyers, going to rallies.

203. You know, political.

204. So what kinda causes?

205. It's really just the one.

206. Uh, nimals forever, I think it's called.

207. Or, no, no, no. Animals first.

208. He was an animal rights activist?

209. Yeah, definitely.

210. He'd save anything with a beak or a claw.

211. Jeez.

212. Whatever got to him had some pretty nasty claws.

213. And some very large fangs.

214. What is that?

215. Punctures from the fangs

216. of most likely some type of viper.

217. So this thing had the claws of a lion

218. and the fangs of a snake?

219. It reminds me of a woman I once knew in Cleveland.

220. Walter, these punctures are over four inches apart.

221. And that would make this snake eight-feet long.

222. Her name was Harriet something.

223. How is everything?

224. Well, apparently you're looking for a lion-snake named Harriet.

225. Did you find anything at M.I.T.?

226. Yeah, the victims were all animal rights activists,

227. a group called "animals first."

228. So you think that they were breaking into labs that were doing animal testing?

229. And releasing the animals,

230. which would explain the burglary tools

231. and the lack of I.D.

232. It would, but it wouldn't explain

233. how whatever it is that these guys released

234. was able to rip a door off their car and kill 'em all.

235. Walter, have you got any idea what kind of animal

236. would be in a lab that could do this?

237. Well, judging by the wounds,

238. I'd say two or three different ones actually.

239. Right, a motley crew of lab animals got together

240. and decided to exact their revenge on mankind.

241. Astrid, let's look up labs in the area

242. that do research with animals and...

243. See if any of them reported break-ins.

244. Yep, I'm on it.

245. Thank you.

246. Oh, no.

247. This is unit 81 responding to the...

248. monster sighting on route 30.

249. Roger that, 81.

250. It's always a monster.

251. Monster must be housewife for raccoon.

252. You hear that?

253. Any leads on the fourth victim?

254. No.

255. What?

256. Nothing.

257. You called Rachel last night.

258. Anything important? Hardly.

259. You know that song "if you like pina coladas"?

260. We were trying to remember the name.

261. It turns out it's called escape.

262. So you two are friends now?

263. Does that bother you?

264. No.

265. Hey, Charlie, what's up?

266. Oh, good heavens.

267. Astrid, Charlie just called.

268. Animal control got a call from

269. a woman in Newton

270. who claims that she nearly hit a monster on route 30.

271. So I'm gonna go meet him there.

272. Will you call me if you find anything?

273. Ah, sure thing. Thanks.

274. Olivia.

275. Be careful.

276. Thank you, Walter.

277. What was that all about?

278. Nothing.

279. Just want her to be safe.

280. Hello?

281. This is Francis.

282. I need Medevac teams and backup sent to my location.

283. Charlie?

284. Charlie?

285. Charlie.

286. How bad is it?

287. I don't know.

288. Uh, I'm all right.

289. What was it?

290. Big.

291. What the heck is that?

292. Put the stinger in here, please.

293. Now, please, in here. Excellent.

294. Thank you.

295. Agent, I'd like you to get that eyed down at the hospital.

296. No, thanks.

297. It won't be necessary.

298. Agent Francis,

299. I'm told you were attacked by the beast.

300. Did it feel like? It hurt.

301. No, I mean the animal's dermis.

302. Was it rough like a rhinoceros?

303. I haven't felt any rhinos lately.

304. But, uh, it was course like sandpaper.

305. And the metasoma, the tail,

306. was it segmented like a scorpion?

307. I didn't get a good look at it.

308. It kept on knocking me on my ass.

309. Perhaps you did, you just can't remember.

310. Trauma can do that. I could hypnotize you...

311. Walter, I think that that's enough for the moment.

312. But it would be very helpful to identify the traits.

313. Are you okay? Did you take something?

314. Psychedelics?

315. No, not since thursday, no.

316. Walter, why don't you share what you're thinking?

317. I believe we may be dealing

318. With a transgenic species.

319. Which is what?

320. It's an animal creation.

321. Um, an organism made up of the genes

322. of multiple species.

323. The best of the best, as it were.

324. You're saying that you think the creature is man-made?

325. Accelerated darwinism.

326. Is that even possible?

327. In theory, yes.

328. Although one would have to solve many problems...

329. incompatible species,

330. massive mutual rejection,

331. similar to when a transplant recipient

332. rejects a donor organ.

333. And there's a reason for that.

334. Mixing a bunch of species to create a franken-rhino

335. is unnatural

336. and a really bad idea.

337. Dunham. Hey, it's me.

338. Is Charlie all right?

339. Yeah, he's okay.

340. Thank God.

341. Okay, um, you wanted me to look into any labs

342. that might house animals near the first crime scene.

343. And?

344. How can I help you, Agent Dunham?

345. Dr. Swift?

346. You could start by telling me what sort of work

347. you do here at Swift research.

348. Well, we're commissioned

349. by pharmaceutal and cosmetic companies

350. to test their products,

351. to make sure they're safe

352. before using them in human trials.

353. Oh, by testing them on animals first?

354. Well, it's an unfortunate but necessary step.

355. We feel it's better to have an animal

356. experience an allergic reaction

357. to a certain perfume so that you don't have to.

358. Uh, Dr. Swift,

359. are you aware that a group of college students

360. were attacked and killed near this facility last night?

361. Attacked? By whom?

362. That's what we're trying to determine.

363. We believe these students may have been...

364. Are you okay?

365. Um, no, actually.

366. We're three days behind on a deadline.

367. You'll excuse me if I seem insensitive,

368. but what does this have to do with me and this lab?

369. We believe they were animal rights activists.

370. That they were killed after they broke in

371. and released animals from a facility

372. much like you have here.

373. So you're suggesting that a lab animal

374. is responsible?

375. Well, maybe one that was genetically altered?

376. Do you do any of that sort of work here?

377. No, Agent Dunham.

378. I told you we only test products.

379. And what's more, there was no break-in.

380. Doing some cleanup work?

381. Hundreds of animals in and out of here every week.

382. As I'm sure you can probably imagine,

383. the cleanup never ends.

384. Mind if I take a look?

385. Uh, not to be a rude host,

386. but you actually do need a warrant.

387. Understand, we deal with billion-dollar trade secrets,

388. and I am obligated

389. to respect my clients' confidentiality.

390. No, hmm?

391. How would we accomplish that?

392. Wait, damn it!

393. How can I concentrate

394. with you running around?

395. Walter, are you talking to me?

396. No, just thinking out loud.

397. Walter.

398. Walter, I need you to tell me

399. what exactly you would need to create a genetic hybrid

400. like, specific items,

401. so that I can see if Robert Swift's

402. bought any of it.

403. I would need some sodium bicarbonate

404. and a house in the country,

405. a place to be alone with my oughts.

406. Some mahler for the late nights.

407. And time.

408. A lot of time.

409. I know, it's like he's on another planet.

410. You've seen him. He's been like that all day.

411. But can you focus him?

412. Focusing walter is even at the best of times

413. just a matter of degrees.

414. Okay, fine.

415. Thank you.

416. Hey, Walter, I need you to step back

417. to the planet Earth for a second

418. and focus on something that isn't about you.

419. Peter...

420. I'm afraid this is about me,

421. about my work.

422. I found this book among my old files.

423. What is this, Walter?

424. Olivia, take a look at this.

425. Is this the creature?

426. No.

427. But I fear it's quite similar.

428. Where did you get this?

429. I tried to make it 20 years ago.

430. Are you saying you created this?

431. Not this one specifically.

432. My experiments were a failure.

433. You knew. You knew all along.

434. You knew that this was connected to your work,

435. and you knew you had information that could help us

436. but you kept it to yourself.

437. My creatures didn't survive.

438. Someone else must have finished my work.

439. Who, Walter? Who could have done this?

440. Twenty years ago, who were you working with?

441. Kelvin Genetics.

442. We were doing classified work for the U.S. Army.

443. I need a name, Walter. Uh, guys.

444. Do you remember anybody specific?

445. Guys.

446. This body is moving.

447. What?

448. They're still alive.

449. Quick, unzip it. They may be suffocating.

450. Oh, maggots! No, not maggots.

451. Larvae from the creature.

452. You mean that these are baby monsters?

453. Yes.

454. We must collect them.

455. Peter, a petri dish.

456. Make it a bucket.

457. I'm gonna be sick.

458. Two buckets.

459. Walter, how is this even possible?

460. The stinger.

461. It must carry the eggs.

462. It transfers them

463. to a suitable incubator.

464. What, you mean it plants the eggs

465. when it stings you?

466. Yeah. It's fascinating.

467. Oh, God. Charlie.

468. So far there have been three reported sightings

469. in the greater Boston area...

470. Two in Medford and one in Arlington.

471. Authorities advise if you see it or any other wild animal,

472. do not try to confront it yourself.

473. Do you hear this?

474. There's some kind of mountain lion on the loose.

475. Mountain lion?

476. Yeah, in Boston.

477. Where does a mountain lion come from in boston.

478. Maybe it escaped from the zoo.

479. Well, I doubt that,

480. otherwise they would just say so.

481. Local authorities advise

482. that if you do spot the mountain lion

483. that you should not try to approach it.

484. Well, baby, that's why you married me.

485. Why?

486. 'Cause I can protect you

487. from all the scary things that are out there.

488. And, uh, who's gonna protect you?

489. I told you, it's just a scrape.

490. Bad guy, broken bottle.

491. Ohh.

492. Nothing I haven't handled before a dozen times.

493. Who's that?

494. Liv. Charlie, hey.

495. What's up?

496. You okay?

497. Yeah, Charlie, um...

498. but you may not be.

499. Electro-conductive gel for the ultrasound.

500. Enough with the suspense.

501. What is it exactly that we're looking for?

502. I believe that the stinger we found in you

503. implanted the creature's embryos.

504. I think this is why the creature didn't eat you.

505. I think you may be carrying its offspring.

506. You trying to tell me that I'm pregnant?

507. We're hoping not.

508. So?

509. Ten times magnification.

510. Is that...

511. I'm afraid so.

512. One small piece of good fortune

513. is the creature doesn't mate

514. in the traditional way.

515. Thanks for that, Walter. That's great bedside manner.

516. So what do we do now?

517. I don't know.

518. I can't simply remove them.

519. They've already spread throughout his system.

520. Just give me a second. Astrid.

521. Walter.

522. Walter, calm down.

523. Liv, uh, the other victim.

524. How were these things actually born?

525. It doesn't matter

526. because, um, it's not gonna go that far.

527. Walter, there's gotta be something that you can do,

528. all right?

529. Hey, look at me. You can't check out right now.

530. We cannot let this man die.

531. Don't you think I know that, Peter?

532. I'm thinking, damn it.

533. Agent Farnsworth,

534. draw 25 milliliters of blood.

535. Peter, get some trichlorimide.

536. What are you gonna do?

537. Poison them.

538. This is gonna pinch just a little bit.

539. Careful, Peter, it's highly toxic.

540. If this doesn't work,

541. how much time do I have?

542. The last victim,

543. we figured 24 hours

544. after he was...

545. Knocked up.

546. Yeah.

547. So I have about 16 hours.

548. Slow down, honey.

549. Careful.

550. Okay, get your toy out.

551. Hello?

552. Hey, Catherine.

553. Whoa, whoa, slow down, honey. Be careful.

554. Have fun.

555. Hey, Catherine, sorry.

556. Oh, the house? Yeah. We saw it yesterday.?

557. I made a few calls for you.

558. This is what I was able to get the army

559. to declassify on Kelvin genetics.

560. Five lab assistants worked there

561. with Dr. Bishop and William Bell.

562. All of them now in the private sector,

563. none working in biogenetics as far as I can tell.

564. And Robert Swift?

565. No connection.

566. I've been through the missing persons records a dozen times.

567. There's nothing from any of the local hospitals either.

568. You're still thinking there was a fourth activist.

569. And if they're out there and impregnated,

570. then who knows how many more

571. of these things we're looking at.

572. Though presumably we'd have heard something by now.

573. Any more sightings?

574. Not any within the last ten hours.

575. Maybe it's gone.

576. Maybe it went into the river

577. or died from lack of proper food.

578. Agent Dunham, Peter Bishop's on line six.

579. Hey. It's bad news.

580. The poison killed the larvae,

581. But it's poisoned Charlie's blood too.

582. Have you spoken to Charlie?

583. Yeah, he's putting on a brave face

584. but he's not doing so well.

585. His blood pressure's down. His kidneys are failing.

586. I don't understand.

587. Walter thinks the larvae act like a parasite,

588. feeding off its host for nutrients.

589. They're killing him so that they can gestate.

590. Tell her, Peter, about the blood?

591. What blood?

592. Walter has a theory.

593. He thinks he knows a way to trigger the thing

594. to self-destructing.

595. how do we do that?

596. We have to transfuse Charlie with the creature's blood,

597. mix their mother's blood with his own.

598. That way maybe the larvae will think he's one of their own,

599. and stop feeding and die from starvation.

600. Which sounds crazy, I know.

601. But he seems to think it'll work.

602. Okay. Then that's what we'll do.

603. Bye.

604. What?

605. We need to find the creature.

606. It's got three bedrooms,

607. so if we want to have another baby

608. we'll be fine.

609. Oh, and, uh, the best part about it

610. is it's got this amazing yard.

611. It's even got a tree house for Tuck.

612. Uh, Catherine, let me call you back.

613. Tuck!

614. Tuck, come out of there.

615. Tuck!

616. Medford, Waltham, Newton,

617. and an unconfirmed report of a giant snake

618. out of Watertown.

619. What are you thinking?

620. That it doesn't make sense.

621. I mean, something this big,

622. why aren't there more sightings?

623. This is just a mild sedative.

624. It might make you feel more relaxed.

625. Thanks.

626. You're welcome.

627. I'm sorry this has happened to you.

628. It's not your fault.

629. They didn't tell you.

630. Tell me what?

631. The creature,

632. where it came from.

633. Astrid, I need a schematic of the sewers,

634. section e-3 and f-5.

635. You've had a thought?

636. Yeah, I think it's traveling underground.

637. Here you go.

638. Thank you.

639. Look at that.

640. All the sightings are near major storm drains.

641. And each one of them large enough

642. to accommodate the creature.

643. That make sense.

644. If it's part tiger, then it would prefer dark.

645. And a python would seek out water.

646. So it's probably only surfacing to eat

647. or to mate.

648. What?

649. If it's traveling in the sewer,

650. Then we have nothing.

651. It could be anywhere.

652. Walter, it's okay. We're making progress.

653. No, it's not okay.

654. You tell agent Francis it's okay.

655. I'll go talk to him.

656. Hang on, hang on, hang on.

657. Hold him down, hold him down.

658. Charlie.

659. Lift his shirt.

660. They're getting bigger.

661. When?

662. Did you get any witness statements?

663. Okay, well, can you send me them

664. as soon as you get them?

665. Thank you.

666. Another sighting?

667. Yeah, this time in a public park off Hawthorne,

668. which is nowhere near any of the other places.

669. So there's no predictable pattern.

670. No, this thing could show up anytime, anywhere,

671. and we'll have no idea.

672. Hello.

673. Agent Dunham.

674. Hey, this is Carl Bussler from M.I.T.

675. What can I do for you, Carl?

676. Uh, you said to call if anything came up,

677. and I think maybe something might have.

678. What is it?

679. Uh, this kid Jonathan hasn't been in class

680. for the last few days.

681. And I don't know if he was friends with Chris or whatever,

682. but he was into all that animal rights stuff too.

683. Anyway, no one's seen him.

684. Okay, I'll look into it. What's his last name?

685. Uh, Swift. Jonathan Swift.

686. Miss.

687. You can't go back there.

688. Agent Dunham.

689. You lied to me.

690. I did?

691. You obstructed the course of a federal investigation

692. into the deaths of five people.

693. Will you excuse us for a minute?

694. Dr. Swift, you failed to tell me

695. that your son Jonathan was at M.I.T.

696. I'm not sure how that's relevant.

697. Three of his classmates were torn limb from limb

698. the other night, and he hasn't been seen since.

699. I would say that that would be very relevant.

700. I don't know how that happened,

701. but my son was not involved.

702. When was the last time you spoke to Jonathan?

703. A few days. He's very busy at school.

704. Yes, I know.

705. Politically active. Animals first.

706. He wasn't too fond of the work you did here, was he?

707. I really can't say.

708. Is this going somewhere, Agent Dunham?

709. Yes, a motive.

710. I believe that he found out about your studies,

711. that your lab was testing on animals,

712. and he and his friends broke in here two nights ago.

713. But what he didn't know

714. was that you do more than just test on animals.

715. You create them, dangerous genetic hybrids.

716. We're done here.

717. Any further questions,

718. you're gonna have to go through my attorney.

719. Dr. Swift, this thing has already killed five people

720. and infected one of our agents.

721. As we speak, his offspring is growing inside of him,

722. killing him.

723. Do you really want his death on your conscience?

724. Now your son is out there, maybe injured, maybe infected,

725. and I can help.

726. But you need to help me too.

727. It didn't kill five people.

728. Excuse me?

729. It was seven.

730. Hey, Swift broke.

731. He admitted that the hybrid came from his laboratory.

732. Apparently he was collaborating with a geneticist

733. called Cameron Deglmann.

734. Oh. Well, where is this guy?

735. Uh, dead.

736. He was at the lab along with Swift's son

737. when the students released the creature.

738. So what is the link to kelvin genetics?

739. Well, that's the interesting part.

740. You get a pen.

741. Good news. That was Olivia.

742. Swift confessed.

743. Apparently this monster

744. has nothing to do with your work, Walter.

745. No?

746. Swift was working with a geneticist.

747. For years he was pursuing this work,

748. a cameron Deglmann.

749. Deglmann, of course.

750. Whoa, whoa, who's Deglmann?

751. A pioneer in hybridization.

752. Quite brilliant.

753. In fact it was his work

754. that inspired my research in the first place.

755. And it never even crossed your mind

756. that he might be involved?

757. He had a very forgettable face.

758. And in the more good news column,

759. Olivia was able to get the combination of animals

760. that went into the hybrid.

761. Oh, oh, go on.

762. Uh, heloderma suspectum.

763. Yes, a venomous lizard native to North America.

764. Also called the gila monster.

765. Megarhyssa macrurus.

766. Parasitic wasp. Interesting.

767. Desmodus rotundus and...

768. Wait, did you say desmodus rotundus?

769. Yeah. Why, what is that?

770. It's a type of bat.

771. Of course.

772. Why didn't I think of it before?

773. Their immune system.

774. Makes it a perfect candidate for genetic hybridization.

775. I'm lost.

776. Bats have an immune system

777. that's unique in the animal kingdom.

778. They can carry on hundreds of different diseases

779. without ever being affected.

780. That's the same system makes it possible

781. for the creature to mature

782. without rejecting its various parts.

783. The bat was the missing ingredient

784. that allowed the creature to survive.

785. So now that you know what it is,

786. can you help Charlie?

787. No.

788. We'll still need a specimen of the creature's blood.

789. Okay.

790. Okay, well, we know what it's made of.

791. We know that it moves through the sewer.

792. So can't we, I don't know,

793. like, bait it or something?

794. Just so I'm clear, are you actually suggesting

795. that we go down into the sewers

796. and wait for this thing to eat us?

797. Oh, no. Yes!

798. Yes. Oh, no.

799. No?

800. It's not interested in food. No.

801. But we do have something that it is interested in.

802. Bats are a highly maternal species.

803. They are quite protective of their young.

804. Walter, are you saying that we can lure this thing

805. by dangling those larvae in front of it?

806. Yes. But no.

807. Oh, great, this again.

808. It won't be necessary to be in front of it.

809. Bats are capable of seeking out their offspring

810. from miles away.

811. We've already determined

812. that it's traveling through the sewer systems.

813. So we just need to lure it from a central location.

814. Wonderful, so we're gonna antagonize this thing

815. into chasing us and then what, Walter?

816. Well, now that I have a better idea

817. of its biological makeup, I think I can kill it,

818. assuming that you can provide us

819. with 50-caliber incendiary rounds, Agent Dunham.

820. Well, that's not exactly FBI standard-issue, Walter.

821. Are you sure about this?

822. If my theory is correct

823. and the bat traits are dominant in the creature,

824. then yes, I believe we can successfully lure it.

825. Whether we can survive the encounter

826. is the more intriguing question.

827. Okay, we missing anything?

828. Could you carry these, son?

829. Sure thing.

830. Be careful.

831. You must be very gentle with them.

832. Right, 'cause we wouldn't want to hurt the monster babies.

833. You need anything?

834. A shot of J.D.

835. And a chaser of beer would be nice.

836. You know, hunting this thing in the sewers...

837. It's not a good idea, Liv.

838. You got a better idea?

839. Yeah.

840. Don't get hurt for me.

841. Well, that's not really very fair

842. considering you would do the same thing for me.

843. I'll be back soon, I promise.

844. You will call me if his condition changes.

845. I will.

846. We ready?

847. Ready as I'll ever be.

848. Walter, let's go.

849. Be right there, son.

850. Based on the schematics,

851. this will make a fine infiltration point.

852. Nothing to see here, ma'am.

853. Just routine maintenance.

854. Smells great down here.

855. So what's next, Walter?

856. There's an intersection 100 feet down here

857. that will conduct the sound most effectively.

858. Nearly there.

859. The larvae are creating a vibration,

860. frequencies of sound,

861. detectable by bats,

862. and hopefully our guest of honor.

863. Well, now I know what it feels like

864. to be live bait.

865. Hey, come on, let's get into position.

866. Hello.

867. You just get in?

868. Hi.

869. I thought it might be you.

870. I just got in from the market.

871. I ran into Jody.

872. What is it?

873. Oh, uh, she just told me a really funny joke.

874. Tell me.

875. So the patient goes to his doctor

876. and he says,

877. "Doctor, if I give up wine, women, and song,

878. will I live longer?"

879. And the doctor says,

880. "Well, no.

881. But it'll feel longer."

882. You don't think that's funny.

883. I do.

884. No, you don't.

885. Are you gonna be home for dinner?

886. I don't know.

887. Okay, all right.

888. Well, I will see you when you get home.

889. And I love you, babe,

890. even more for laughing at that joke.

891. And I love you too.

892. Bye bye.

893. Frightening situation like this,

894. two things occur to me.

895. The first is a song. I used to sing to Rufus.

896. Our dog.

897. When he was young, he used to have night terrors.

898. Hey, Walter, think we can wait down here

899. to be mauled in silence, please?

900. Of course.

901. So what was the second thing?

902. Hmm?

903. You said two things occur to you.

904. Oh, the second thing.

905. I need to tinkle.

906. Could either of you direct me to the facilities?

907. The facilities?

908. You're in the sewer, Walter.

909. You're knee-deep in the facilities.

910. Quite right.

911. Excuse me.

912. Don't say that I never take you anywhere.

913. Walter, what the hell are you doing?

914. Hey, open this up right now.

915. I'm afraid I can't do that, Peter.

916. No one else is going to get hurt.

917. This thing is a mistake,

918. and I'm going to correct it alone.

919. Walter, hey!

920. Walter, you open this gate right now.

921. You were right, Peter.

922. I live in a society.

923. And I need to clean up after myself.

924. Walter, this is not your fault.

925. You did not do this.

926. No, but I could have.

927. I pursued the same science...

928. Walter, Walter, you're not prepared for this.

929. That thing could tear you apart.

930. That's right. I almost forgot.

931. I've already considered that possibility.

932. Walter, is that the trichlorimide?

933. No, no, no!

934. What are you doing?

935. That's gonna poison you.

936. Should the creature consume me,

937. it will only be poisoning itself.

938. Afterwards, you remove its blood

939. and save Agent Francis.

940. Walter, listen to me, I don't want you to do this.

941. Okay? Do you hear what I'm saying?

942. I do not want you to do this.

943. Should I live, there's an antidote in the lab,

944. which I should ingest within the hour.

945. So time is of the essence.

946. Walter.

947. Walter, stop right there.

948. Walter, come back here!

949. Stop right now!

950. Walter!

951. Selfish son of a bitch.

952. If he lives through this, I am gonna kill him myself.

953. Oh, dear God.

954. Walter!

955. Walter!

956. Ohh!

957. Are you okay?

958. Yes.

959. Although when I mentioned

960. that the poison would kill me within the hour,

961. did either of you happen to notice the time?

962. That's it then?

963. Now we wait.

964. Prepare Agent Francis for the ultrasound.

965. What?

966. Sonia and I,

967. we've been talking a lot lately

968. about having a baby.

969. Sorry, I gotta gel you up.

970. You were right.

971. What you said before about the consequences,

972. I don't think of them, never have.

973. Don't know if I can.

974. That's not who I am.

975. I know.

976. But you were brave today.

977. Yeah.

978. Check in on Agent Francis.

979. Let's look in on our little friends.

980. It didn't work.

981. Ever the pessimist.

982. Look.

983. They're dying.

984. What happens now?

985. Now you crap 'em out.

986. I didn't mean to wake you.

987. You feel good.

988. So do you.
