1. I've never met anyone
in my entire life like Jules.Copy !req
2. Rue is in love
with Jules, I think.Copy !req
3. Hey, I'm Ethan.
- I'm Kat.Copy !req
4. You look different.Copy !req
5. I changed.Copy !req
6. 'Sup, Cass.Copy !req
7. You wanna ride the carousel?Copy !req
8. That's the guy from the motel.Copy !req
9. You're beautiful.
- Thank you.Copy !req
10. - That's Nate's dad?
- Yes. That's Nate's dad.Copy !req
11. Hey. Tyler?Copy !req
12. God, are you broken inside.Copy !req
13. I went through Nate's phone,
and it was weird.Copy !req
14. I need you to promise me that
you're not gonna tell a soul.Copy !req
15. I'm sorry I got so angry at you
before.Copy !req
16. Maddy knew who she was
from a very early age.Copy !req
17. For as long as Maddy could
remember, everybody loved her.Copy !req
18. She never knew exactly
what it was.Copy !req
19. She just knew that she had
something special,Copy !req
20. something intangible,Copy !req
21. something immeasurable.Copy !req
22. And it gave her confidence.Copy !req
23. That's why she loved pageantry,Copy !req
24. because you didn't have to be
the prettiest or the tallestCopy !req
25. or the blondest
or the whitest.Copy !req
26. You just had to have
fucking confidence.Copy !req
27. And she probably would have
gone on to win Miss Universe,Copy !req
28. - if it weren't for...
- (camera shutter clicks)Copy !req
29. - ... this guy.
- Newsman (on TV):
A beauty pageant coach,Copy !req
30. Marcus Cutler was arrested
todayCopy !req
31. on 18 counts
of child molestation.Copy !req
32. That's it. You're done.
No more pageants.
This is sick.Copy !req
33. Her dreams were dashed
by some random,Copy !req
34. 50-year-old creep
who didn't molest her,Copy !req
35. let alone even meet her.Copy !req
36. She refused to eat for a week
out of protest.Copy !req
37. Jenni (on TV):
Drama!Copy !req
38. But then she realized
how much she liked
not doing anything.Copy !req
39. Maddy would never
say it out loud,Copy !req
40. especially not today,
because everybody's
so political,Copy !req
41. but she never really had
any desire to have
a career... or job.Copy !req
42. She was just interested
in doing what she did,Copy !req
43. just, without school
and the other bullshit.Copy !req
44. Her mother was an esthetician.Copy !req
45. Which is a fancy way
of saying she gave
pedicures to rich people.Copy !req
46. And her dad was a drunk,Copy !req
47. who was always
pretending to hold jobs
longer than he did.Copy !req
48. She quickly realized
that there are two kinds
of people in the world:Copy !req
49. people who sit
in the chairs with
their feet in the footbath,Copy !req
50. and the people who kneel
in front of the footbath.Copy !req
51. She used to sit and study
the women who came in.Copy !req
52. She'd pay attention
to what they wore,Copy !req
53. what they'd talk about,Copy !req
54. and what she realized
was that none of them
actually did anything.Copy !req
55. I mean, they may have,
like, children to raiseCopy !req
56. or homes to decorate,
but at the end of the day,Copy !req
57. they literally did nothing.Copy !req
58. They literally did...Copy !req
59. nothing.Copy !req
60. And strangely,
none of them had confidence.Copy !req
61. She had had a thing
for Nate for a while,Copy !req
62. before he finally
asked her out.Copy !req
63. And at first,
he was a gentleman,Copy !req
64. like, flowers every day
kind of gentleman.Copy !req
65. - And he was smarter
than most guys.
- Nate: Maddy.Copy !req
66. - Plus, Nate, like,
really loved her.
- You're so sweet.Copy !req
67. I love you.Copy !req
68. I love you, too.Copy !req
69. And she did love Nate.Copy !req
70. She loved her relationship
with Nate.Copy !req
71. She was also
a really good girlfriend.Copy !req
72. Granted, she didn't always
tell the truth.Copy !req
73. You're a virgin?Copy !req
74. Because the truth-truth
is that when she was 14,Copy !req
75. on vacation
in Panama City Beach,Copy !req
76. she met a guy
who was, like, 40.Copy !req
77. Hey. You from around here?Copy !req
78. Which in retrospect
seems kind of rape-y and weird,Copy !req
79. but honestly,
she was the one
in control.Copy !req
80. - Yeah.
- Rue: She could tell
by looking in Nate's eyesCopy !req
81. - how much it meant to him.
- Like fully?Copy !req
82. Yeah.Copy !req
83. That she was
a hundred percent his.Copy !req
84. What about, like,
have you ever been fingered?Copy !req
85. Only my own.Copy !req
86. Plus,
it's not like anyone can feel
the fucking difference.Copy !req
87. But that's the thing
with guys like Nate.Copy !req
88. They don't actually
want a person.Copy !req
89. They want something
they can ownCopy !req
90. and possess.Copy !req
91. Like Sharon Stone in Casino.Copy !req
92. But the cool thing
about Sharon Stone
in CasinoCopy !req
93. is that she ran the fuck
over De Niro.Copy !req
94. I would fucking kill
for that coat.Copy !req
95. And she did the same
to Nate.Copy !req
96. How much do you think it costs?Copy !req
97. Seriously, Sharon Stone
in Casino was, like,Copy !req
98. Maddy's spirit animal.Copy !req
99. She also watched a lot of porn.Copy !req
100. Not because it turned her on
or anything, it didn't.Copy !req
101. But if you analyzed it
really closely,Copy !req
102. there were a ton
of really good secrets.Copy !req
103. Sometimes, during sex,Copy !req
104. she would imagine
she was a ventriloquistCopy !req
105. controlling her body—Copy !req
106. moving her hips
and arching her back
in just the right way.Copy !req
107. She wanted Nate to feel good
about the way he fucked.Copy !req
108. Because if you make a guy
feel confident and powerful,Copy !req
109. well, they'll do anything.Copy !req
110. - That one.
- I got you a present.Copy !req
111. Really?Copy !req
112. After dinner.
It's in the car.Copy !req
113. Oh, my God,
it's perfect!Copy !req
114. - I fucking love you.
- I fucking love you, too.Copy !req
115. She did worry about
the whole monogamy thing,
though.Copy !req
116. It's not like she ever
cheated-cheated.Copy !req
117. But every now and then,
she'd find herself in,
like, a gray area.Copy !req
118. I'll do anything
to fuck you.Copy !req
119. You're so sweet...
but no.Copy !req
120. Except for that DJ who said
he opened for Calvin Harris.Copy !req
121. And the stockbroker guy
with the family
who lived on Oak Street.Copy !req
122. - And hot dude who
ran the roller rink.
- (panting)Copy !req
123. But honestly,
those were all timesCopy !req
124. when Nate and her
were on a break.Copy !req
125. Plus, Nate could be
a real asshole.Copy !req
126. And sometimes,
Maddy fantasized
about punching Nate.Copy !req
127. But because of who
he was as a person,Copy !req
128. she was afraid
he'd hit her back.Copy !req
129. Especially because
he was coming to terms
with his sexuality.Copy !req
130. You're fucking
dead to me.Copy !req
131. It's, like, the root
of a lot of violence.Copy !req
132. And when she got home
that night,Copy !req
133. she felt sick to her stomach...Copy !req
134. like enough to throw up.Copy !req
135. It wasn't the violence
that scared her.Copy !req
136. It was the fact that she knew
no matter what he did,Copy !req
137. she'd still love him.Copy !req
138. Nothing in the world
comes close to opiates.Copy !req
139. A good ES 7.5 Vicodin?
Fuck.Copy !req
140. But honestly,
the best thing
I've ever hadCopy !req
141. is fentanyl.Copy !req
142. And there is not a thing
on the planet Earth
that compares to fentanyl.Copy !req
143. Except Jules.Copy !req
144. Jules is a close second.Copy !req
145. Jules, Jules, Jules.Copy !req
146. And then you know
what would be better?
Jules and fentanyl.Copy !req
147. But I can't do both,
'cause Jules won't have me.Copy !req
148. So for now, I'll choose Jules.Copy !req
149. - Rue, dinner's ready.
- Okay.Copy !req
150. - Are you coming?
- Yeah. No.Copy !req
151. Yeah. For— aah—
For dinner.Copy !req
152. - Just, uh, give me a second.
- Okay.Copy !req
153. You two have a good time
at the carnival?Copy !req
154. - Yeah, it was cool.
- It was all right.Copy !req
155. - Rue said you got sick
on the Gravitron.
- I don't want to talk about it.Copy !req
156. So...Copy !req
157. Jules slept over last night?Copy !req
158. Yeah. So?Copy !req
159. Are you two
in a relationship?Copy !req
160. I mean, yeah, kinda.Copy !req
161. It may not matter
what I think, but...Copy !req
162. I really like her.Copy !req
163. Yeah, me, too.Copy !req
164. Baby, just take your time.Copy !req
165. You've come a long way.Copy !req
166. You're delicate.Copy !req
167. - I'm not delicate.
- Yes, you are.Copy !req
168. It's fine, Mom.
We, um...Copy !req
169. We had a really
long conversation
about everything, and...Copy !req
170. we're just gonna
take things really,
really slow.Copy !req
171. Yo. Looks good.Copy !req
172. You ready?Copy !req
173. Um...Copy !req
174. How bad does it hurt?Copy !req
175. (mumbling):
It didn't hurt, like, at all.Copy !req
176. It's all good.
I've been doing this
for years.Copy !req
177. I love you, Rue,Copy !req
178. but there's no fucking way
I'm doing that.Copy !req
179. I didn't know what happened
the night Jules met Tyler.Copy !req
180. I knew it wasn't good,
but I was afraid to pry.Copy !req
181. And selfishly,
things had been
going really well.Copy !req
182. Show me exactly where
the holdup is.Copy !req
183. Granted, after the carnival,Copy !req
184. - things got really
fucking weird.
- (phone ringing)Copy !req
185. Hey, I gotta call you back.Copy !req
186. Slow down.Copy !req
187. Slow down. What's happened?Copy !req
188. I'll meet you out front.Copy !req
189. Officer Wilson:
Thank you for coming down,
Mr. Jacobs.Copy !req
190. Do you want to tell me
what's going on?Copy !req
191. Officer Wilson:
Let's talk when we get inside.Copy !req
192. - Marsha: Cal, you okay?
- Yeah. Need a second.Copy !req
193. Now, what had happened was...Copy !req
194. that morning,
Maddy went to school.Copy !req
195. (chuckles)
What are you,
the Unabomber?Copy !req
196. What are you,
a dominatrix?Copy !req
197. - No.
- I didn't mean
for real, bitch.Copy !req
198. Obviously.Copy !req
199. But seriously,
are you okay?Copy !req
200. Yeah. I'm just
on my period.Copy !req
201. - Okay. Bye.
- Bye.Copy !req
202. And Maddy's first class
was Intro to Calc in room 202,Copy !req
203. which unfortunately
was in the upper left wing
of the school.Copy !req
204. Is the air conditioner,
like, not working?Copy !req
205. Ms.
It's broken. You could always
take off your hoodie.Copy !req
206. Now, if it was a normal day,Copy !req
207. Maddy would have just
taken off her hoodie.Copy !req
208. But since Nate choked her,Copy !req
209. Maddy woke up
three hours early,Copy !req
210. applied more concealer
than a burn victim,Copy !req
211. and tried her best to cover up.Copy !req
212. To compound the problem,Copy !req
213. she also suffered
from a drop in serotoninCopy !req
214. from the Molly she took
at the carnival, got depressed,Copy !req
215. and therefore hadn't had
anything to eat or drink
the entire weekend.Copy !req
216. Plus, she actually was
on her period.Copy !req
217. Maddy?Copy !req
218. Maddy?Copy !req
219. She's in here.Copy !req
220. I'm fine. Why is everyone,
like, so dramatic?Copy !req
221. Principal Hayes:
Obviously, you've been
through a lot this weekend.Copy !req
222. But my real concern
is the bruising on your neck.Copy !req
223. There is no bruising
on my neck.Copy !req
224. - Mm. Paramedics saw it.
- Yeah, well, they're lying.Copy !req
225. Madeleine, look.Copy !req
226. I understand that you
may be afraid to talk
about how you got hurt.Copy !req
227. But I want you to know
that it is not your fault.Copy !req
228. I'm trying to find
a really respectful
way to say this.Copy !req
229. But, um,
this doesn't concern you.Copy !req
230. It does concern me, Madeleine.Copy !req
231. You're 17 years old.Copy !req
232. If I suspect that
you're being abused,Copy !req
233. I'm mandated by law
to report it.Copy !req
234. (mutters):
Fuck.Copy !req
235. Was it someone you know?Copy !req
236. Was it Nate Jacobs?Copy !req
237. All I know is she,
like, knocked over
a giant pot of chiliCopy !req
238. and, like,
called his mother
the "C" word.Copy !req
239. I mean, he did, like,
grab her by the arm.Copy !req
240. Yo, straight up?
The chick's crazy.Copy !req
241. Do you know why
Nate and Maddy were fighting?Copy !req
242. Um, I don't wanna talk
until I get a lawyer.Copy !req
243. You're not being charged
with anything.Copy !req
244. (pops lips)
Look, Nate's gay.Copy !req
245. I'm being serious, Barbara.Copy !req
246. No, I'm telling you,
like, Nate's actually gay.Copy !req
247. That's why Maddy was upset.Copy !req
248. I don't know about the carnival,Copy !req
249. but I do know
she smashed some dude
in the pool at McKay's.Copy !req
250. Smashed?Copy !req
251. That's why he attacked
the new girl.Copy !req
252. What new girl?Copy !req
253. The one who cut herself.Copy !req
254. I have no idea what
you're talking about.Copy !req
255. Mr. Jacobs,
would you please
come with me?Copy !req
256. - What?
- Come with me.Copy !req
257. You wanna tell me
what the problem is?Copy !req
258. Don't worry. We will.Copy !req
259. What was that about?Copy !req
260. - Probably 'cause Nate
tried to kill Maddy.
- What?Copy !req
261. Well, 'cause she found
all that gay porn on his phone.Copy !req
262. - Who told you that?
- You did.Copy !req
263. - When?
- At the carnival.Copy !req
264. Okay, Lexi,
never repeat that,Copy !req
265. because literally
none of it's true.Copy !req
266. Uh...Copy !req
267. Daniel, I-I can't.
I'm sorry.Copy !req
268. I just— I'm—
I'm dating somebody,
and...Copy !req
269. I really don't want
to fuck it up.Copy !req
270. It's cool. Don't worry.Copy !req
271. I just like you.
I kind of thought
you liked me.Copy !req
272. I do, I just...Copy !req
273. I have a boyfriend.Copy !req
274. Please don't say anything.Copy !req
275. If I promise
not to say anything,Copy !req
276. can we hang out again?Copy !req
277. Woman (over projector):
reproductive health
and your total well beingCopy !req
278. in all aspects
of reproduction.Copy !req
279. For example,
physical, emotional...Copy !req
280. (whispers):
Hey. Did you get my texts?Copy !req
281. - No.
- Really?Copy !req
282. - Well, I sent you
a bunch of texts.
- Didn't get 'em.Copy !req
283. Well, it says, like,
delivered on my phone.Copy !req
284. Look, I really don't
want to talk about this
right now.Copy !req
285. What, are you for real?Copy !req
286. Did I, like, do something?Copy !req
287. I don't know, Ethan.
Did you?Copy !req
288. So the night of the carnival,
while fucking Luke Kasten,Copy !req
289. Kat had an epiphany.Copy !req
290. She was fucking Luke Kasten,Copy !req
291. Luke motherfucking Kasten.Copy !req
292. And for those
of you who didn't go
to East Highland...Copy !req
293. (sighs)
Luke Kasten was a fucking god.Copy !req
294. I mean, he graduated years ago
and people still talk about him.Copy !req
295. He has the biggest dick
I've ever seen,Copy !req
296. and I was looking at him
while he was fucking me.Copy !req
297. I could see his face
scrunching up when he was
coming all over my stomach,Copy !req
298. and I had this, like,
realization, you know,
like, this epiphany.Copy !req
299. That no matter how cool,
or, or sexyCopy !req
300. or, or smart
you think a guy is,Copy !req
301. they're actually just
fucking pathetic.Copy !req
302. It's true, KittenKween.Copy !req
303. (Kat laughs)
Oh.Copy !req
304. By the way,
if you wanna come,Copy !req
305. I put a body harness
on my Amazon wish list.Copy !req
306. I'm gonna need you
to buy it for me.Copy !req
307. Yes, KittenKween.Copy !req
308. - Kat:
Can I be honest with you?
- Johnny: Always.Copy !req
309. - Kat:
What I realize is that, like...
- Where are you going?Copy !req
310. my whole life,
all I've tried to do
is to take up less space.Copy !req
311. To the mall.Copy !req
312. Try to hide from guys,
like, who might, like,Copy !req
313. whisper to their friend
under their breath
as I walked by.Copy !req
314. I've spent my whole life
afraid people were gonna
find out that I was fat.Copy !req
315. But honestly,
who gives a shit?Copy !req
316. I'm so in awe of you,
KittenKween.Copy !req
317. There's nothing more
powerful than a fat girl
who doesn't give a fuck.Copy !req
318. Hey.Copy !req
319. - Thought you weren't
from around here.
- I'm not.Copy !req
320. I get off work at seven.
You wanna hang out?Copy !req
321. (whispering):
Why are you suddenly
being so mean?Copy !req
322. - You don't understand, Mommy.
He didn't do it.
- Then who did?Copy !req
323. - It wasn't Nate.
- Maddy, stop lying.Copy !req
324. - I'm not lying!
- I am not gonna let
the son of a bitchCopy !req
325. attack my daughter
and get away with it.Copy !req
326. - Right?
- Absolutely.Copy !req
327. - He needs to know
that there are consequences.
- Mom!Copy !req
328. - I would like to press charges.
- Well, you're not fucking
pressing charges!Copy !req
329. - I am gonna press charges.
- No, you're not pressing—Copy !req
330. - This is for your own good!
- No, you're not
pressing charges!Copy !req
331. - Principal Hayes:
O-Okay!
- (Maddy sobbing)Copy !req
332. I would like to press charges.Copy !req
333. - You okay, Mr. Jacobs?
- I'm fine.Copy !req
334. Principal Hayes:
Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs,Copy !req
335. thanks for getting here
so quickly.Copy !req
336. Officer Wilson:
So, it appears that your son
and Miss PerezCopy !req
337. had a physical altercation
on Saturday night,Copy !req
338. in which he allegedly
strangled her.Copy !req
339. - Marsha: What?
- Officer Wilson: There are
multiple eyewitnesses.Copy !req
340. Miss Perez has
extensive bruising,Copy !req
341. and the family
will be pressing charges.Copy !req
342. There must be some
misunderstanding.Copy !req
343. This doesn't sound like
something my son would do.Copy !req
344. I would like to talk
to the Perez family.Copy !req
345. Officer Wilson:
Actually, Mr. Jacobs,Copy !req
346. I think it'd be best
to speak to your sonCopy !req
347. before we take him
to the station.Copy !req
348. He's just this way.Copy !req
349. Did you do it?Copy !req
350. (softly):
Not really.Copy !req
351. Did you admit to it?Copy !req
352. No.Copy !req
353. Did you do it?Copy !req
354. No.Copy !req
355. (sighs)
Well, that's good to hear.Copy !req
356. Her family's gonna
press charges.Copy !req
357. - (whispers): Fuck.
- Hey.Copy !req
358. Listen to me.Copy !req
359. You need to stay composed.Copy !req
360. Don't get angry,
don't make a scene.Copy !req
361. You walk out of the school
with your head held high.Copy !req
362. Look at me.
Hey, look at me.Copy !req
363. What's about
to happen to you...Copy !req
364. to me, to our family...Copy !req
365. is not gonna be easy.Copy !req
366. You walk out first.
I'm right behind you.Copy !req
367. Go on.Copy !req
368. (whispers):
I love you.Copy !req
369. Okay, one: what was that about?Copy !req
370. Can we talk about
the fact that you fucked
Nate's dad?Copy !req
371. Rue, swear to God, like,
on your life that you will
never tell anyone.Copy !req
372. - That you fucked Nate's dad.
- I'm serious!Copy !req
373. This is like, like,Copy !req
374. even if you decide
you hate me one day,Copy !req
375. like, you can never
tell anyone.Copy !req
376. How would I ever hate you?Copy !req
377. That's not the point.
Like...Copy !req
378. Seriously, this is some
go-to-your-grave shit.Copy !req
379. I promise.Copy !req
380. (mutters):
Okay.Copy !req
381. Do you think Nate knows?Copy !req
382. No. Why would Nate know?Copy !req
383. I don't know.
You went up to the chili booth
at the carnival.Copy !req
384. Did... he look like he knew?Copy !req
385. No, like, literally,
I didn't even notice.Copy !req
386. Nate's scary.Copy !req
387. The whole fucking family
is scary.Copy !req
388. I don't want to have
this conversation.Copy !req
389. You know what would be amazing?
If they paid you offCopy !req
390. with a bunch of money
and we do a bunch
of really cool shit.Copy !req
391. Rue, this isn't a joke.Copy !req
392. I don't know why
Jules didn't trust meCopy !req
393. or why she'd think
I'd ever hate her.Copy !req
394. There's literally
nothing in the worldCopy !req
395. that Jules could do
to make me upset.
I even told her that.Copy !req
396. - Jules: Yeah, right.
- No, for real. It's true.Copy !req
397. So, like, do you have
a lot of one-night stands?Copy !req
398. Um, define a lot.Copy !req
399. Um, like...Copy !req
400. - More than five.
- (chuckles) Yeah.Copy !req
401. More than ten.Copy !req
402. I don't know.Copy !req
403. More than 20.Copy !req
404. - Rue, why does it matter?
- It's just a question.Copy !req
405. Who cares?Copy !req
406. Is the sex, like, good?Copy !req
407. I don't know. It's, like,
it's not even the point,
you know?Copy !req
408. It's more about,
like, everything
that leads up to it.Copy !req
409. That's the good part.Copy !req
410. I mean, you've had
one-night stands, right?Copy !req
411. No.Copy !req
412. But you've, like,
hooked up with peopleCopy !req
413. - that you've just met, right?
- Uh, not— Not like that.
No. No.Copy !req
414. Wait. How many people
have you slept with?Copy !req
415. Not many.Copy !req
416. No, like, what's your number?Copy !req
417. Ugh, this is
so embarrassing.Copy !req
418. I had my first kiss
at the age of 12Copy !req
419. with a boy I didn't
really like, but...Copy !req
420. I just wanted
to get it over with.Copy !req
421. I gave four hand jobs
in eighth grade,Copy !req
422. two blow jobs in ninth,Copy !req
423. one of which I was
emotionally coerced into.Copy !req
424. I'm literally gonna
tell the entire school
that you sucked my dick,Copy !req
425. so you might as well
just suck my dick.Copy !req
426. Then there was that time
that Lexi got asked
to the freshman formalCopy !req
427. by Tucker Blake
and I tried to teach her
how to French kiss.Copy !req
428. Is this, like, really weird
and uncomfortable for you?Copy !req
429. Mm, no. Not really.Copy !req
430. Okay. Um, I'm gonna
get ready.Copy !req
431. Also, at 15,Copy !req
432. I ate two Xannie bars,
drank a beer, which is
super dangerous,Copy !req
433. and lost my virginity.Copy !req
434. - (exhales) Did you come?
- Yeah.Copy !req
435. Word.Copy !req
436. You look like
you came hard.Copy !req
437. All I know is, life is not
a Nicholas Sparks novel.Copy !req
438. - That's it?
- Yep. That's— That's it.Copy !req
439. Wait, so, like...
have you ever been in love?Copy !req
440. - (splatters)
- Fucking pigs!Copy !req
441. Fuck you!Copy !req
442. Hi, Maddy. I'm Detective Riley.
I understand this is traumatic,Copy !req
443. but you're gonna
have to cooperate.Copy !req
444. If you literally
step any closer,
I will fight you!Copy !req
445. Miss, this is procedure.
I need you to remove
your sweater now,Copy !req
446. and if you don't,
we will remove it for you.Copy !req
447. Really, bitch? How?Copy !req
448. - Maddy: You're fucking crazy!
- Officer Wilson: Calm down.Copy !req
449. Take a deep breath.
Take a deep breath.Copy !req
450. Come on, Maddy.
We don't want to hurt you.Copy !req
451. Get off of me!Copy !req
452. - Officer Wilson: Maddy, please.
- Detective Riley: Relax.Copy !req
453. - Officer: There we go.
- Detective Riley:
Thanks, guys. I got this.Copy !req
454. Detective Riley:
I know you're
really upset right now,Copy !req
455. - and you don't want
to hear this.
- (camera shutter clicks)Copy !req
456. But trust me, when I tell you
that the person that did this...Copy !req
457. - (camera shutter clicks)
- ... doesn't love you.Copy !req
458. Mm-hmm.Copy !req
459. So you grabbed her.Copy !req
460. I grabbed her by the arm
to drag her away.
I didn't choke her.Copy !req
461. I asked her why
she was acting that way.Copy !req
462. Like, I asked her
what she was doing.Copy !req
463. I don't want to get her
in any trouble, but she'd
taken a lot of drugs.Copy !req
464. What drugs?Copy !req
465. I don't want to get
her in trouble.Copy !req
466. She's not gonna get
in any trouble.Copy !req
467. Molly.Copy !req
468. As in MDMA?Copy !req
469. Yeah.Copy !req
470. But I don't know
if it was pure.Copy !req
471. Like, I don't—
I don't do drugs,
so I don't know.Copy !req
472. And after that conversation,
was that the last timeCopy !req
473. you spoke to Miss Perez
that evening?Copy !req
474. Yeah.Copy !req
475. Her and I don't have
the healthiest relationship.Copy !req
476. I know that.Copy !req
477. My dad's always telling me
that she's a distraction,
and he's right.Copy !req
478. I love her.Copy !req
479. You know, I really love her.
No matter...Copy !req
480. how crazy she acts,
no matter what she does,
I love her.Copy !req
481. It's kind of embarrassing
to admit, but, um...Copy !req
482. on the times when
we've broken up,Copy !req
483. I know for a fact
that she's been with
other guys.Copy !req
484. I don't know, I mean,
it's possible that
that night...Copy !req
485. Aah, it doesn't matter.Copy !req
486. - Detective:
What were you gonna say?
- It doesn't matter.Copy !req
487. I love Maddy.Copy !req
488. I'd never do anything
to hurt her.Copy !req
489. The fallout from Nate's assault
was swift...Copy !req
490. Principal Hayes (on phone):
I'm suspending your son until
the investigation is completed.Copy !req
491. Look, that
could take months.Copy !req
492. and harsh.Copy !req
493. East Highland football team
has a zero tolerance policy.Copy !req
494. I'm a survivor of abuse.Copy !req
495. It took me ten years
to admit that.Copy !req
496. Because the most insidious
symptom of abuseCopy !req
497. is the inability to admit
that what you're enduringCopy !req
498. is not normal,Copy !req
499. not okay, and not love.Copy !req
500. Those are the moments
that keep me up at night—Copy !req
501. thinking about all the times
that I ignored that,Copy !req
502. that voice in my head.Copy !req
503. You know, that told me,
"What are you doing?"Copy !req
504. And what happens in a month?
Six months? A year?Copy !req
505. When she moves away
and goes to college?Copy !req
506. When she tells you,
she just wants to be friends?Copy !req
507. - You mean "if."
- No, Rue. I mean "when."Copy !req
508. I mean, I don't know.
We talked about
living together.Copy !req
509. Like, if she goes to New York,
I'll just go with her.Copy !req
510. - I'll go anywhere she goes.
- I think you're missing
my point, Rue.Copy !req
511. Nothing in high school
lasts forever.Copy !req
512. You should meet her.Copy !req
513. Go ahead, Rue.Copy !req
514. Uh...Copy !req
515. Hey, everyone. I'm—
I'm Rue and I'm an addict.Copy !req
516. Hi, Rue.Copy !req
517. Uh...Copy !req
518. I guess I just wanted to,
uh, make amends with everyone.Copy !req
519. Because most every time
I've shared,Copy !req
520. I— I was lying.Copy !req
521. (sighs)
Yeah, every time
I collected a chip,Copy !req
522. whether it be 30 days
or 60 days or 90 days,Copy !req
523. I was lying.
(chuckles)Copy !req
524. Um...Copy !req
525. But... I met someone.Copy !req
526. And she's helped.Copy !req
527. And now I want to stay clean.Copy !req
528. And, shit, maybe that's—
Maybe that's me being selfish,Copy !req
529. you know, and Ali just
scared the shit out of me.Copy !req
530. 'Cause he told me that
it wasn't gonna last.
(laughs)Copy !req
531. And, fuck, you know what?Copy !req
532. Maybe you're right.Copy !req
533. But I really, really, really
hope you're wrong.Copy !req
534. 'Cause, uh, I've been clean
for 13 days.Copy !req
535. It's been okay.Copy !req
536. Um, I've actually been
really happy.Copy !req
537. So, um...Copy !req
538. Yeah, I don't know.
I guess that's why I wanted
to come here, and...Copy !req
539. tell you guys the truth.Copy !req
540. Uh, thank you.Copy !req
541. - (applause)
- Thank you.Copy !req
542. - Man 1: Welcome back.
- Man 2: Thank you, Rue.Copy !req
543. So, is this like a friend thing
with Rue or is it, like...Copy !req
544. I don't want
to talk about it.Copy !req
545. I was just wondering...Copy !req
546. are you two,
like, a thing?Copy !req
547. No, we're not a thing.
I don't know
what a thing is.Copy !req
548. 'Cause I've been thinking,
you know, if it was,Copy !req
549. if you two were a thing...Copy !req
550. We could all just do, like,
a family thing together.Copy !req
551. Maybe go out to dinner
or something.Copy !req
552. I don't want
to go to dinner
with you and Rue.Copy !req
553. - I'm sorry.
- Why? Because you're
embarrassed of me?Copy !req
554. Or is it because
you're a thing?Copy !req
555. - You're hilarious.
- Yeah, I know.Copy !req
556. Is she still going
to meetings?Copy !req
557. That's great.Copy !req
558. You're a good influence.Copy !req
559. McKay had heard the news
about Nate.Copy !req
560. Had a bunch of dick pics
on his phone.Copy !req
561. And was, like, what,
sending them to other girls?Copy !req
562. No, McKay, it wasn't his dick.
It was other guys' dicks.Copy !req
563. I'm confused.
Who told you this?Copy !req
564. What dick pics?Copy !req
565. The ones you told me about,
on his phone.Copy !req
566. I don't know if your
brain is all scrambledCopy !req
567. from, like,
all the Molly you take,
but I never said that.Copy !req
568. If you spread a lie like that,
I will fucking come for you.Copy !req
569. We good?Copy !req
570. - Yeah.
- (locker slams)Copy !req
571. Anyway, look, Cassie,Copy !req
572. I'm really sorry about
what happened the other
night at the carnival.Copy !req
573. It's okay.Copy !req
574. No, I should have
said something to Nate.Copy !req
575. It just really hurt
my feelings.Copy !req
576. It made me feel like
you weren't proud
to be my boyfriend.Copy !req
577. Cass.Copy !req
578. Give me a kiss.Copy !req
579. I'm proud to be
your boyfriend,
trust me.Copy !req
580. I'm sorry, too.Copy !req
581. What do you got
to be sorry about?Copy !req
582. I love making music.Copy !req
583. Yeah, I mean,
but to be honest...
(clears throat)Copy !req
584. I don't think I'm,
like, good enough
yet to just do music.Copy !req
585. But that's, like, my dream,
you know or whatever.Copy !req
586. - What about you?
- What about me?Copy !req
587. You look like
you're creative
or something.Copy !req
588. Uh, you know?Copy !req
589. - Creative. (laughs)
- Yeah.Copy !req
590. I don't know. Just, like,
the way you dress and stuff.Copy !req
591. I just thought you might be
an artist or something.Copy !req
592. Look, if you wanna hook up,
we can hook up.Copy !req
593. Um... (chuckles)
I wasn't expecting that.Copy !req
594. Really?Copy !req
595. Yeah, I was just
making conversation.Copy !req
596. I mean, that's my point,
you don't really have to.Copy !req
597. Maddy wasn't doing well.Copy !req
598. Over the course
of the last five days,Copy !req
599. Maddy has sent Nate
a total of 273 text messages,Copy !req
600. none of which he answered.Copy !req
601. Plus, everyone in her life
was against her.Copy !req
602. - Who the fuck are
you to judge?
- (Sonia speaking Spanish)Copy !req
603. Seriously, Mom,
Dad has slept on the couch
since I was ten years old.Copy !req
604. I'm not.Copy !req
605. I'm just saying
love is a million things.Copy !req
606. Sometimes it feels good,
sometimes it doesn't.Copy !req
607. The one thing I know
is that Nate loves me
no matter what.Copy !req
608. He'd fucking kill for me
and I'd kill for him.Copy !req
609. It feels good to know
that there's one person
in this whole fucked-up worldCopy !req
610. who has my back.Copy !req
611. You think I want this?Copy !req
612. You live in the same house
and you don't even say
one word to each other.Copy !req
613. That's the difference
between me and you.Copy !req
614. Kat, I need to come over,
like, right now.Copy !req
615. - Kat (on phone): I'm not home.
- What? Where are you?Copy !req
616. - Kat (on phone):
With a... friend.
- Who?Copy !req
617. Kat (on phone):
It doesn't really matter.
I'm just, like,Copy !req
618. in the middle of something.
Can I call you back later?Copy !req
619. Well, can you blow them off,
please? I really need you
right now.Copy !req
620. Kat (on phone):
I— I can't. I gotta go.Copy !req
621. - Sorry about that.
- All good.Copy !req
622. Um...Copy !req
623. So, like...Copy !req
624. (grunts)
Oh!Copy !req
625. (grunts)
Shit.Copy !req
626. Mmm!Copy !req
627. (groans)
Fuck!Copy !req
628. (shudders):
Shit.Copy !req
629. Fuck.Copy !req
630. It was just...Copy !req
631. That was really good.Copy !req
632. Seriously, that was like...Copy !req
633. one of the best blow jobs
I've ever had.Copy !req
634. One more time, okay?
One more time!Copy !req
635. Rue seems really good.Copy !req
636. Yeah. She does.Copy !req
637. It's 'cause of you,
you know.Copy !req
638. - Um, I'm gonna go
to the bathroom.
- Okay.Copy !req
639. I'm so sorry
I'm late.Copy !req
640. My landlord is such
a fucking cocksucker. Ugh.Copy !req
641. You know that type of person
that, like, just tries to get
under your skinCopy !req
642. for, like, no reason?Copy !req
643. Whatever. You don't care.
I can breathe.Copy !req
644. Oh, my God.
You're actually hot?Copy !req
645. Can I, uh...
Would you like
a glass of champagne?Copy !req
646. Honey, no.
I don't do alcohol.Copy !req
647. You from around here?Copy !req
648. I'm from planet Venus, baby.Copy !req
649. I'm Minako.Copy !req
650. But the boys
call me Mina.Copy !req
651. I'm, um...
I just...Copy !req
652. - Will you please
stop the music?
- Jeez.Copy !req
653. What is up with you?Copy !req
654. - You want a popper?
- No.Copy !req
655. Well, then,
what do you want?Copy !req
656. I just want to talk
for a little bit.Copy !req
657. What do you want
to talk about?Copy !req
658. I've just had
a really long week.Copy !req
659. - Wife?
- No.Copy !req
660. - Kids?
- Yeah.Copy !req
661. Mm.Copy !req
662. - Boys or girls?
- Boys.Copy !req
663. Mm.Copy !req
664. Do you think this stuff
affects them?Copy !req
665. Even if they don't know it?Copy !req
666. I don't know.Copy !req
667. Do you think hiding it
creates the same thing
in them?Copy !req
668. Honey, I don't know.Copy !req
669. Everyone knows who I am.Copy !req
670. You know...Copy !req
671. I spent my whole life
trying to keep this
part of me separate.Copy !req
672. But I feel like it's
poisoned everything.Copy !req
673. I thought thatCopy !req
674. I was doing what was best
for everybody.Copy !req
675. And then,
I look at my boys, and...Copy !req
676. they have so much anger.Copy !req
677. Not just anger...Copy !req
678. but rage.Copy !req
679. And it scares me.Copy !req
680. Because... it's too late.Copy !req
681. It's always gonna be
inside them.Copy !req
682. All those problems
you have, baby...Copy !req
683. I'm here to fix it.Copy !req
684. All that bad energy...Copy !req
685. you can give it to me.Copy !req
686. I can handle it.Copy !req
687. You know, it seems like
we never do this anymore.Copy !req
688. Yeah.Copy !req
689. - You gonna spend the night?
- Uh, I should probably go home.Copy !req
690. Okay. Uh, well, is it cool
if I just go with you?Copy !req
691. Uh, yeah. Sure.Copy !req
692. What's up, bro?Copy !req
693. Yeah, I'm with her right now.
What's up?Copy !req
694. He says can you tell Maddy
to download Signal?Copy !req
695. - Woman (in car): Get off
the road, you fucking cunt!
- Fuck you!Copy !req
696. Christopher McKay's father
demanded excellence.Copy !req
697. Then he got to college
and he realized...Copy !req
698. he didn't stand a chance
of going pro.Copy !req
699. If we go to this party
and you dress like that,Copy !req
700. I ain't gon' ever hear
the end of it.Copy !req
701. The whole point of
Halloween is to look attractive.Copy !req
702. The situation with your son,Copy !req
703. a lot of people are talking.Copy !req
704. You need a plan.Copy !req
705. Every time I feel good,
I think it'll last forever.Copy !req
706. But it doesn't.Copy !req
707. I was drawn to Maddy
as a character because I knewCopy !req
708. she would pull me out
of my comfort zone.Copy !req
709. I think Maddy's
always been confident.Copy !req
710. Like when she was a little girl,Copy !req
711. she was winning pageant
after pageant.Copy !req
712. So, I think her confidence is
something that she's always had.Copy !req
713. Like I think Maddy definitely
runs Nate.Copy !req
714. She definitely gets
what she wants out of him,Copy !req
715. but in those moments where
he gets angry and violentCopy !req
716. and dark, she just...Copy !req
717. she's so weak,
and I think she's in pain.Copy !req
718. She's in a toxic,
abusive relationship.Copy !req
719. It wasn't
the violence that scared her.Copy !req
720. It was the fact that she knew
no matter what he did,Copy !req
721. she'd still love him.Copy !req
722. She thinks that what Nate
provides for herCopy !req
723. and does for her
is 100 times betterCopy !req
724. than what she's seen her dad do.Copy !req
725. Growing up
in a dysfunctional home,Copy !req
726. you can end up
in those relationshipsCopy !req
727. because they either seem normal
to you,Copy !req
728. or they seem better
than what you've seen at home.Copy !req
729. Maddy will do anything
in her powerCopy !req
730. not to end up like her parents.Copy !req
731. She doesn't want that life,
so she's— she's trying to findCopy !req
732. a way out in any way she can
and I think...Copy !req
733. that's where the relationship
with Nate comes in.Copy !req
734. I think she likes the idea
of it.Copy !req
735. So even though
he's hurting her, she just—Copy !req
736. she thinks it's better than
what she's grown up watching.Copy !req
737. Just saying love
is a million things!Copy !req
738. Sometimes, it feels good.
Sometimes, it doesn't.Copy !req
739. Trust me when I tell you
that the person that did thisCopy !req
740. doesn't love you.Copy !req
741. I think Maddy feels like
everyone's against her,Copy !req
742. and no one understands them.Copy !req
743. It feels like the lowest point
of her life,Copy !req
744. and even then, she's—
she's still rooting for Nate.Copy !req
745. She wants him to figure out
a plan.Copy !req
746. She wants him to be okay.Copy !req
747. She really feels like
they have this special bond,Copy !req
748. but it's— you know,
it's a dysfunctional young love.Copy !req
749. Working with Jacob
was incredible.Copy !req
750. I couldn't have asked
for a better scene partner.Copy !req
751. Those scenes are really intense,
and you know, it is—Copy !req
752. it's acting, but it's physical
and you know,Copy !req
753. you're pouring all
of your emotion into this.Copy !req
754. I think Maddy's searching forCopy !req
755. any bit of love,
any bit of hope.Copy !req
756. I think we want love sometimes
so bad,Copy !req
757. we stay in these relationshipsCopy !req
758. even when we know
they aren't right.Copy !req
759. But she doesn't want to admit
that to herself.Copy !req
