18. So for the last time this series,

19. my name is Steffan Powell.

20. And welcome to Doctor Who Unleashed unseen.

21. Filming on the 15th Doctor's first season

22. began on Monday, the 5th of December 2022,

23. with 18-year-old Millie Gibson

24. made up to play a 25-year-old Ruby Sunday

25. in the episode 73 Yards.

26. It ended on the TARDIS on Friday, the 14th of July 2023,

27. with the Doctor consigning Sutekh

28. to a fiery oblivion

29. in the final episode, Empire of Death.

30. In between, there were countless adventures and landmarks.

31. The first of those landmarks

32. was the very first scene of the season,

33. the opening of Space Babies,

34. when Ruby Sunday steps onto the TARDIS for the first time.

35. And in typical Doctor Who timey-wimey style,

36. it was actually filmed halfway through the shoot,

37. and Unleashed was there to capture the moment.

38. Right, it is the 16th of March, 2023.

39. The year is obviously important in Doctor Who

40. because it's all about time travel.

41. Anyway, that is the TARDIS.

42. Now, we film loads in the TARDIS, obviously,

43. but today is an especially important day

44. because they're about to start filming

45. the first scene of the first episode

46. of the brand-new series,

47. with Ncuti and Millie.

48. Let's go take a look.

49. All right, and set. OK.

50. Great, set, and three,

51. two, one, action!

52. Who are you?

53. Scott, we just hijacked you from the side of set. Yes.

54. First scene of the first episode of the new series. Mh-hm.

55. It's a big deal. It's massive.

56. It's... it's really, really exciting.

57. Um, we've shot a few episodes already, but, you know,

58. it's Ncuti and Millie, new series.

59. I'm the Doctor.

60. Come and have a look.

61. It's called the TARDIS.

62. It's all fresh and new and it's Doctor Who. Yeah.

63. And, three, two, one, button!

64. Need to nip down and just have a look at this. Yeah.

65. And see the rehearsal and see them do the first take,

66. because it feels like a historic moment.

67. It's, um, amazing.

68. There's been a lot of, uh, gasping and ooh-ing and ah-ing this morning.

69. But it's a fantastic scene and they're so good together.

70. The chemistry is brilliant. Yeah.

71. It's amazing to see.

72. This is obviously the start of a brand-new series of Doctor Who

73. and a brand-new era of Doctor Who, really, it feels like.

74. So, yeah, it's really important we get it right.

75. There's been a lot of meetings, a lot...

76. I mean, the building of this, um, TARDIS took a long time.

77. I mean, the amount of scaffolding behind you.

78. I think we've got every piece of scaffolding in South Wales

79. actually in this building.

80. And action!

81. Quite a long sequence, isn't it? It's long, it's long.

82. But I think that there's something...

83. I don't like to break up scenes like this

84. because I like to have the energy

85. and they're so young and they're so kind of dynamic and fun.

86. I like to keep that energy going.

87. So that's my preference as a director.

117. Ncuti and Millie have done quite a bit of stunt and wire work,

118. some of it pretty scary stuff.

119. Except sometimes it's not them at all.

129. In fairness, Ncuti loves to do his own stunts,

130. but the Whoniverse can't afford

131. to shut the shoot down for two months

132. like, say, Mission Impossible did

133. when Tom Cruise broke his ankle.

134. Instead Ncuti and Millie have stunt doubles.

135. Their names are Paul Joseph and Jessica Barfoot,

136. and I got to hang out with them on the set of The Church On Ruby Road.

137. What have you been up to today?

138. Today I was, uh, doing a stunt where

139. it's Ncuti running and jumping off of the rooftop

140. and grabbing onto the... onto the ladder to be taken up.

141. Three, two, one, action!

142. Jess was just chilling, I had to run and catch the ladder.

143. So you're saying Jess hasn't done any work today and you've been busy.

144. I mean, hanging around on the ladder is still quite hard, you know.

145. Yes, she has to catch me, pretty much. Yeah.

146. Make sure it is in the right angle for you.

147. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty good.

148. So when you do the jump, sometimes it's a little bit off,

149. so you've got to do another take.

150. Sometimes they want you to twist this way or that way.

151. Yeah. So, did it a few times and we got it in the end. It's great.

152. So none of this happens without the work you guys

153. have already done before today.

154. How does it work?

155. It's more training, like, we've both been working since,

156. well, basic... With me, like, four or five years old.

157. Yeah. Been learning how to fall over.

158. How to fall and not hurt yourself. Yeah.

159. Dynamics and all of that and the same with you.

160. Kind of the same-ish background.

161. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

162. So, you know, we train a lot to get on the stunt register. Yeah.

163. Um, and then you're kind of prepared for anything

164. so you can sometimes just rock up to a set,

165. ask what you're doing, and then go, "Right, let's get on with it then."

166. Jessica got into stunt work through gymnastics and high diving.

167. Paul came to it as a world-renowned parkour athlete.

168. It was through doing those kind of jobs that I met some stunt guys

169. and they're like, "Oh, you should get onto the stunt register,

170. "you should get into stunts," and I was like,

171. "Hmm, let me have a look." And then I slowly

172. kind of transitioned into that.

173. Yeah. So, yeah.

174. Now, obviously parkour is very dangerous,

175. so please don't start jumping off things in the hope of

176. getting a stunt job on Doctor Who.

177. You'll just get exterminated.

178. Do you ever get scared?

179. No.

180. It's crazy to look back, but you kind of

181. do it before you think about it.

182. I get scared sometimes, but then you have to think about

183. all the training that you've done

184. and you're confident in your abilities.

185. And when you work with, like, really good safety teams

186. and stuff like that, you know you're in good hands.

187. It's nice for you this time, because you've actually got wires on,

188. whereas when you're doing parkour, you don't have any wires. Exactly.

189. So, actually, it's safer. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

190. The parkour was a lot more dangerous than this.

191. There was no safety things

192. when you're up on a rooftop doing parkour, so this is a breeze. Yeah.

193. Well, I wasn't going to give parkour a try - I am no gymnast.

194. And I didn't fancy jumping off a cliff either,

195. but I did like the look of those wires.

196. This might be... You might notice this is my first rodeo.

197. I've never put a... I've clearly not put a harness on before, have I?

198. Oh, it is tight. It's quite tight, isn't it? Yeah, it's got to be snug.

200. I shouldn't have had that burrito for breakfast.

229. When Millie and Ncuti were up there,

230. they were actually delivering lines and stuff

231. and having to, like, do action.

235. In episode four, 73 Yards, we meet Roger ap Gwilliam,

236. a fictional nuke-loving future Prime Minister from 2046.

239. he's interviewed by real-life journalist and presenter Amol Rajan.

240. Excuse me, I'm sorry,

241. are you saying that you actually want to fire a nuclear missile?

242. Amol presents today on Radio Four,

243. but you might also know him as the host of University Challenge,

244. who went viral online when he muttered the immortal phrase...

258. Ageing myself to look like this took a very, very long time

259. because obviously I'm a very young, handsome, tight-jawed guy

260. with a beard.

261. It took about two hours.

262. They put flecks of grey in my hair, they sha...

263. I've never had a tache before. I've never had a tache.

264. They shaved off my beard, which was quite shocking,

265. but it was worth it.

266. Amol is the latest in a long and noble line of

267. real-life news presenters to appear on Doctor Who.

268. Way back in 1966, Kenneth Kendall, a BBC news anchor, was the first.

269. The Ministry of Defence have just made the following announcement -

270. further attacks on London can be expected in the next 24 hours.

271. Fast-forward 40 years,

272. and Welsh broadcaster Jason Mohammad has appeared several times.

273. We're now getting confirmed reports of spaceships.

274. Bill Turnbull and Sian Williams appeared in 2011 episode

275. The Wedding Of River Song.

276. Lizo Mzimba appeared in Mona Lisa's Revenge.

277. Clyde Langer won first prize

278. in the gallery's Artists of the Future competition.

279. At the end of the 2018 webcast 'Twas The Night Before Christmas,

280. an animated Sophie Raworth popped up.

281. There have been multiple sightings of a police box in the sky.

282. And in 2021, Emily Maitlis appeared in The Revolution Of The Daleks.

283. They're calling him the saviour of humanity,

284. the man who stood up to the invaders on behalf of us all.

285. So, how do you get a news presenter gig on Doctor Who?

286. Asking for a friend.

287. I was approached to be part of Doctor Who

288. through the BBC news kind of hierarchy.

289. So, my main job is on BBC news and the kind of managing editor said,

290. "I've got this really top secret thing.

291. "You're going to have to sign a little form and not tell anyone."

292. So, I think I'm allowed to talk to you guys about it.

293. And he said, "Look, you're going to get a chance

294. "to play yourself in Doctor Who."

295. I obviously watch Doctor Who and I obviously said,

296. "Well, I'm not sure if I... I'm well up for it!"

297. And I was sent the script,

298. and this is - whisper it - the first time I've ever done any acting.

299. So I'm finding the whole experience absolutely exhilarating,

300. to be honest.

301. I mean, it's just... It's amazing.

302. I feel like a Hollywood A-lister, and I'm very much not.

315. But first, to film this season of Doctor Who,

316. over 50 different locations were used.

317. From rooftops to coastlines to manor houses,

318. each location has to be found, approved and secured for filming.

319. This is done by the locations team.

320. Back in October 2022, before filming had begun,

321. I spent the day doing work experience

322. with team boss Iwan Roberts.

323. So, Iwan, what is your official title?

324. So, I'm Supervising Location Manager on the Doctor Who series.

325. So that basically means you get to come to really beautiful places

326. like this all of the time? Absolutely.

327. It's like being on a holiday all the time. All the time.

328. Well, a very cold and windy holiday.

329. Today, Iwan and I have been tasked with finding the perfect location

330. for the opening scene of 73 Yards - somewhere where the TARDIS can land.

331. Russell's script is clear -

332. Welsh coast - day, waves crashing on the rocks,

333. vast and endless.

334. Tick, tick, tick.

335. Well, this is very dramatic, isn't it?

336. It's very dramatic today, isn't it? Wow.

337. You don't necessarily want it to be like this, do you, Iwan,

338. when the full crew turn up?

339. Not really, no. The dramatic of it is great,

340. the wind, a little bit easier,

341. and the rain away would be good, you know? Yeah.

342. When you first saw the script,

343. did this place come immediately to mind?

344. It was one of the first places that came to mind, along with,

345. you know, we looked at another couple of places in Pembrokeshire,

346. in Cardigan, you know, and I feel this is a strong contender,

347. to be honest with you.

348. So, obviously the TARDIS has got to come here, Iwan.

349. Yeah. Where's it going to land?

350. So, basically, just between the steps and the first ridge,

351. down there, is where the TARDIS is going to materialise.

352. It's going to be probably around...

353. I'm the TARDIS.

354. That's the official way of figuring out

355. where the TARDIS goes. Brilliant.

356. There we go. It's a proper show, Doctor Who, eh?

357. So, Iwan, as well as finding dramatic, beautiful locations

358. like this one, there's a lot more to your job, though, right?

359. Number one is finding the best location we can.

360. Number two, we need to be able to get the vehicles

361. as close as we can to the services of the location.

362. Because we're a large crew, we're a crew of 50, 60 people -

363. maybe more - with, obviously, the trucks, the vans.

364. There's a lot to think about.

365. Obviously, as this is a good hour away from Cardiff -

366. well, an hour and 45 minutes from Cardiff -

367. the likelihood is that we're going to have to overnight the crew,

368. you know, locally.

369. Thankfully, that's not my job to organise that.

370. OK, just testing.

371. How far is 73 yards? Keep going.

372. It's quite far.

373. As well as having a landing pad for the TARDIS,

374. this location also needs to pass the 73 yards test.

375. And you're just standing there, are you?

376. I'm just standing here, yeah. OK. Go on.

377. Is that it? No, no, no, keep going.

378. A long way. Getting closer?

379. No, you're probably less than halfway.

380. Less than halfway? Less than halfway.

381. In the script, the woman,

382. the mysterious character who follows Ruby Sunday everywhere,

383. is always 73 yards away.

384. You're now halfway.

385. Halfway? Halfway.

386. 73 yards is 219ft or 66.7m.

387. Carry on! Are you sure?

388. Yeah, I'm sure.

389. Tape measure doesn't lie.

390. And every location in this episode had to have

391. a clear 73-yards line of sight between Ruby and the woman.

392. What's that like? That's good!

393. I'm in the gorse.

394. Don't go any further.

397. Good, there we are. Well, that's... There we go.

400. So, Rhossili is in the running.

401. But the major drawback of this location manager lark

402. is you can't just rock up and say, "Yeah, this one will do."

403. You've got to give the director a choice of locations.

404. Rhossili was the third location scouted,

405. but we've still got one more to go.

406. This is Dunraven Bay, Southerndown, just 12 miles from Wolf Studios,

407. and a familiar sight to all Whovians.

408. In 2006, it was where the tenth Doctor

409. parted with companion Rose Tyler, and a legendary location was born.

410. Where are we? Where did the gap come out?

411. We're in Norway. Norway, right.

412. It's called Darlig Ulv Stranden.

413. Dalek? DarLIG.

414. It's Norwegian for bad.

415. This translates as Bad Wolf Bay.

416. Two years later, we were back at Bad Wolf Bay

417. for the finale of series four.

418. Oh, fat lot of good this is -

419. back of beyond, bloody Norway.

420. In 2010, we had a new doctor, the 11th, and a new location,

421. the crash site of the starship Byzantium.

422. And two years after that, the doctor returned to Dunraven Bay

423. where he was attacked by pterodactyls.

424. And here we are in 2022, trying to work out if it's too recognisable

425. to be a location again.

426. So, this hasn't been seen on the show before?

427. It has been seen before, obviously from a lower level.

428. I don't think it's been seen from here. From up here? Mm.

429. But obviously, it's still very sort of recognisable, isn't it?

430. Yeah. And that's the issue we've got.

431. Yeah, and I suppose, if you know,

432. someone in the audience is going to, aren't they?

433. Oh, they're definitely going to know. Yeah.

434. So, where did we end up filming the clifftop scene for episode four?

435. Was it the familiar splendour of Dunraven Bay

436. or the windswept Rhossili?

437. Neither.

438. We ended up on a very, very cold week in January 2023,

439. just outside Tenby.

440. The location was magnificent,

441. and everyone agreed that all the effort to find the perfect place

442. was well worth it.

443. Between the end of 2022 and the summer of 2023,

444. the Unleashed team spent seven months on the set of Doctor Who,

445. and the cast and the crew went out of their way

446. to help us and make it all happen.

447. We have loved every single second of it.

448. Working on this show was the first time I'd properly been on the set

449. of a drama production, and I have learned things

450. about the way you make television that has left me gobsmacked.

451. So, here's my top five secrets from the set.

452. From the Space Babies spaceship to the Time Window chamber,

453. the production team have produced stunning set after stunning set

454. across the series.

455. This criminally talented gang

456. also commit fakery on an industrial scale.

457. For obvious health and safety reasons,

458. fake rooftops are built and deployed.

459. For the Maestro episode,

460. a faithfully reconstructed fake of the Abbey Road recording studios

461. was built in an old Cardiff school.

462. The famous Abbey Road zebra crossing wasn't the real deal.

463. It was a street in central Cardiff.

464. Then, in Rogue, the glamorous mansion

465. wasn't one location but three.

466. The dance scenes were filmed just outside Swansea,

467. at Margam Park.

468. Tredegar House, in Newport,

469. was where the Chuldur chased the Doctor and Rogue.

470. Now find them!

471. And Leigh Court, in Bristol,

472. provided the setting for the wedding scene.

473. Then it was all magicked into a seamless whole in the edit.

474. But as I found out in the orangery at Margam Park,

475. even what appears on the screen isn't altogether authentic.

476. Right, we know the art department is pretty special on Doctor Who,

477. and this room has been done up to look like the Regency ballroom,

478. and I'm here to find out what of it is real

479. and what of it is fake.

480. And joining us for our first ever episode of Real or Fake,

481. we have Shuaib.

509. Well, with the way this is going,

523. Oh, you can kind of see, actually, if you look up there.

525. When we started Unleashed, I was expecting monsters, planets,

526. tonnes of space travel.

527. What I wasn't expecting was quite so much gunk and gloop.

528. The Bogeyman - gallons of snot,

529. just gallons and gallons of the stuff.

530. And here's a secret to let you in on -

531. the Bogeyman's lair,

532. it might just be that Lenny Rush and I

533. played a very, very small part in its creation.

535. That's a bogey.

536. As for the Mantraps, nobody can accuse me of

537. not getting my hands dirty there.

538. Put your hand in there. Oh, hello. Here we go.

539. Oh, yeah.

540. Wow. Is this a silly question, Charlie?

541. Is there a technique to applying gloop?

542. The technique is mainly confidence.

543. I've seen too many people on set and the cameras are on them,

544. and they get too nervous. Yeah, yeah.

545. It's getting in there. It's having fun.

546. If you're not having fun doing this, you're not...

547. Don't mind me, I'm just getting in. There you go. Oh, come on.

548. This gooey gunk seems to come in all shapes and sizes.

549. Yeah, OK. If you want to dress that.

550. Pus pumps, slug slime sprayers, pots of grot.

551. Never mind science fiction, this is science nonfiction.

552. How much of this stuff have you used, do you reckon?

553. In the past two days, probably about 20 litres or so.

554. That's a lot of lube, isn't it?

555. Actually, a little bit more than that.

556. Now, one thing I didn't cover with Charlie was, what do you do now?

557. Do I wash it off, do I...?

558. Does anyone know where the bathroom is?

559. As many Whovians have already noted,

560. Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor is the first one

561. to wear a different costume for every episode.

562. However, if there's one item that has become synonymous

563. with the 15th Doctor, it's his super cool leather coat.

564. Even cooler, I discovered the coat has a stunt double.

565. So, this is the Doctor stunt coat... Yeah. .. and basically,

566. so, he's got a hero coat that is completely perfect,

567. and nothing goes wrong with it. A hero coat? Is that what you call it?

568. Yeah, we call it a hero coat. Oh, that's cool.

569. And this is a stunt coat, and then we've got a double hero coat.

570. Right, OK, so, why three coats for one character?

571. Because in this episode particularly,

572. there's a lot of flying,

573. so we've been having loads of harness work done.

574. So this is a stunt coat which is a size bigger... Right.

575. ..so that we can fit all the harnessing

576. and padding on underneath. Yeah.

577. So, this hides all of that stuff going on?

578. Yeah, it helps hide it, definitely, for VFX as well.

579. And then we cut pre-cut holes in it,

580. so, like, my finger's coming through there... Oh, yeah, OK.

581. ..at the back of the collar, to help the jerk vest come through.

582. And is this Velcro here? Yeah.
