25. the seventh adventure of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor

31. Set against a Regency-era backdrop,

32. this episode might have a familiar feel if you like

33. another television series set in a similar historical period,

34. which we are most definitely not allowed to mention.

35. Bridgerton. Bridgerton.

36. Oh, my Bridgerton!

37. This is my actual dream! It's brilliant, isn't it?

38. This is Doctor Who meets Bridgerton.

39. If I'm any guess,

40. this will be the episode that everyone talks about.

41. So how would the Doctor describe it?

42. Sexy.

43. I don't know if I'm allowed to say that.

44. But it was full of passions, and passion.

45. You know, whenever you do Regency stuff,

46. it makes you walk and move and talk differently,

47. and so it's always nice playing with that.

48. We love our costume and make-up departments,

49. and they probably hate the fact that we love them

50. because the fact that we love them

51. means we work them to death.

52. So there's steam coming out of their ears because we're going,

53. "Let's do the Regency, let's have a ball.

54. "Let's have the ladies and the staff

55. "and the full pomp and ceremony of that period."

56. The dances, the movement, the choreography, the style of it.

57. We just wanted this to look lavish.

58. Throw in some bloodthirsty, body-snatching,

59. cosplaying alien birds,

60. and you've already got the makings of a Doctor Who classic.

61. But really, the heart of this episode

62. is a slow-burning pash between the Doctor

63. and a mysterious intergalactic bounty hunter...

64. .. Rogue.

65. My name is Jonathan Groff and I am playing Rogue.

66. The multi-award-winning star of shows such as Glee,

67. Hamilton and Frozen, Jonathan Groff comes

68. with a glitter of Hollywood superstardom.

69. You have those moments where they say,

70. "Shall we send the script to Jonathan Groff?"

71. And I'm like, "Yeah, go on, waste my time."

72. And he read it and loved it.

73. A superstar of a man.

74. So, Rogue is basically an alien bounty hunter.

75. So I've been thinking a lot about Han Solo from Star Wars.

76. Cut!

77. We find ourselves meeting in this world

78. and teaming up to destroy a common ally.

79. And in the process of that, open up to each other,

80. get a bit vulnerable

81. and have a connection

82. at the same time that we're having an adventure.

83. Nice to meet you. I'm the Doctor.

84. Just the Doctor?

85. Just Rogue?

86. This is a chance for the Doctor to sizzle.

87. We don't often do this, but it's like he meets someone

88. who is just on the same...

89. I mean, first of all they're enemies, then they're friends,

90. that classic, they go through classic rom-com structures,

91. the meet-cute and the arguing and the falling out,

92. then the coming together and then the sacrifice.

93. Fast mover.

94. OK.

95. There's this lonely souls meeting that happens

96. in the script that I was really moved by.

97. Let's argue across the stars.

98. It's just new sides to the Doctor.

99. So, he gets to flirt,

100. he gets to break his heart.

101. I'd like that.

102. Russell enlisted writer Kate Herron,

103. director and executive producer of Loki,

104. and her writing partner, Briony Redman,

105. to pen these new sides of the Doctor.

106. Out of the gate, I was like,

107. "Well, look, I love romance.

108. "Like, can we do, like, a queer romance?"

109. And he was like, "Absolutely."

110. So, yeah, so I think that was always, like,

111. I guess the centre of it for us

112. and, like, the heart of the story.

113. Ncuti's interpretation is so extroverted, so we were like,

114. "Well, let's make them a bit more of an introvert

115. because that will just be fun and, you know, opposites attract."

116. He's an incredible actor.

117. I Zoomed with him

118. and I guess that was like our kind of chemistry read.

119. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue

120. Now, this is a surprise.

121. And it was...

122. .. full of chemistry.

123. Mm-hm.

124. So you've got the right man for the job.

125. One particular scene that had to sizzle

126. was the intimate dance between Rogue and the Doctor.

127. We've got in the choreographer Jack Murphy,

128. who choreographs Bridgerton.

129. A formidable, lovable rogue of a man.

130. As he worked with us, like, through the steps,

131. it didn't feel like we were learning the dance steps clinically,

132. like, he'd always root it in

133. some form of, like, artistic intent.

134. The choreography was very much about

135. the connection forming

136. and vibing between the two characters.

137. The day that we performed the dance

138. is so far my favourite day on set.

139. There's a moment in the dance where the lights go out

140. and it's a spotlight on the two of us dancing and I...

141. There was no-one else in the room but Ncuti.

142. It was really transformational

143. and took me to a completely different place with him.

144. Like, we were in the stars together dancing.

145. Performing it on the day

146. felt very nerve-racking, but electric.

147. Who's gonna blink? Who's going to be surprised?

148. In the story it makes perfect sense

149. because they are

150. trying to fight an enemy who live on drama,

151. who cosplay, who live on sensation

152. and appearance and reactions and scandal.

153. Oh, my ladies.

154. So they set out to create a scandal.

155. I don't think it's remotely scandalous.

156. I think it's simply beautiful to watch.

157. The episode ends with that kiss...

158. .. and Rogue sacrificing himself for Ruby.

159. But is this the end

160. for the Doctor's new-found love interest?

161. I hope we're seeing Rogue again.

162. Rogue tells the Doctor at the end of the episode to find him,

163. so it's totally up to the Doctor.

164. The ball is in his court, so to speak.

165. The storyline for this episode takes place across one evening,

166. but it took three weeks of night shoots

167. to get everything in the can.

168. It looks really pretty, doesn't it?

169. Facing lots of late starts and early finishes,

170. the Who crew needed to prepare themselves

171. for the challenges ahead.

172. For me, that means starting the night off

173. the best way I know - a good cup of builder's tea.

174. When they said that we were going to come and do nights,

175. I was quite cocky.

176. I was like, "Oh, that's easy, that's fine. I'm used to that."

177. It's actually quite hard work.

178. I'm flagging. I'm not so cocky now.

179. What's weird is they've just brought these giant cranes in

180. and they're massive.

181. They're so bright

182. that you forget that it's three o'clock in the morning.

183. It's like the middle of the afternoon.

184. So how's everyone coping?

185. Cut.

186. We've not been terrible. When we knew that

187. we were going to have three weeks night shoots,

188. it was like, "Oh, my word, this is going to be difficult."

189. But it's been...

190. We just get on with it.

191. I feel like everyone has smashed it.

192. So you don't change it up?

193. You just carry on as normal?

194. Just carry on as normal.

195. I'm a bit of a night owl anyway... Are you?

196. ..so it suits me fine. Yeah.

198. is always just quite atmospheric.

202. Turns out, though, Ncuti, the wisteria, the flowers,

203. they're not real. Fake flowers.

204. Really? I was a bit disappointed.

205. That's disappointing. I was disappointed with that.

210. how's everyone else preparing?

211. So, night shoot. Your first one?

212. It is my first night shoot, actually.

213. And how are you doing so far?

214. So far, I'm all right. Yeah?

215. Yeah, the key for me is layers.

216. It's all about your body temp.

217. That's what's keeping you going?

218. Yeah. I probably should have brought my hat today

219. because my ears are pretty cold right now. Yeah.

220. But it's not too bad.

257. for a Doctor Who night shoot.

260. the incredible prosthetics and costume departments.

271. And you've been in some pretty big shows.

303. I'm starting to think she made the whole thing up.

307. reveals what it really takes to turn into a Chuldur...

308. Three and a half to four hours,

309. and then about 45 minutes to take it all off.

310. ..I get measured up for my work experience...

311. Dressed up like someone who was living 200 years ago.

312. And spoiler alert...

315. But first...

316. Of course, a Regency drama is all about the look,

317. and to pull it off in all its pomp,

318. you need a lavish stately pile

319. filled with candelabras and candles,

320. peacocks and pineapples and party animals

321. fopping around in breeches and tail coats,

322. corsets and bodices.

323. I honestly felt the prettiest I've ever felt.

324. I remember Pam, our costume designer,

325. said that yellow always works with blondes,

326. and it did.

327. I decided to put Millie in yellow

328. because she looks good in yellow and

329. not everybody can get away with it,

330. and it looks good on camera.

331. And in that set, because it was quite dark,

332. it popped, so it was quite nice.

333. Whenever you do Regency stuff and, like, period stuff,

334. it makes you walk and move and talk differently.

335. I just loved all those ruffles and my hair

336. and everything about that outfit.

337. So the waistcoat and the breeches are cream

338. and the coat, I wanted to have

339. something sort of deep in colour,

340. but quite rich in colour.

341. So I chose that sort of very deep, almost wine colour,

342. in velvet, so it was quite luxurious.

343. But at the same time, I was kind of aware

344. that Jon Pertwee also wore a...

345. I think the same colour of velvet jacket.

346. So there was a nod to an old Doctor.

347. It just felt wealthy.

348. I was like, "I want to look like I'm rich and I own land,"

349. and that's what I looked like, and so it was good.

350. But it wasn't just the main cast

351. that Pam and her team had to kit out.

352. There were also 73 supporting artists in this episode.

353. That's 73 Regency costumes, 73 pairs of Regency shoes,

354. and 73 Regency hairdos.

355. And the person in charge of corralling this army

356. of aristocratic extras is Mikey.

357. So, in 35 minutes, friends,

358. we're going to get the dancers lined up.

359. So if we can just prepare for that, that would be amazing.

360. Thank you.

361. So, today we're filming the beginning of episode six,

362. which is very exciting.

363. We've got lots of dancers, we've got lots of crowd,

364. we've got some musicians.

365. We've basically got a very big opening.

366. So, yeah, we've also got my ear going off at the moment.

367. One sec.

368. OK. Sorry. That will happen a lot.

369. It's 9am, and in just three hours' time,

370. we're recording the spectacular opening ball scene.

371. That might seem like plenty of time,

372. but with all those supporting artists and dancers to get ready,

373. Mikey and his team are up against it.

374. Helping Mikey and the other ADs

375. are a team of runners charged with getting

376. each of the performers ready for filming.

377. You've got Callum here, who's running the costume department,

378. we've got Simona a little bit further, who's doing make-up.

379. I am in charge of the dancers today.

380. The reality of it is having enough time

381. to get everyone through.

382. So, there's 60-odd people today.

383. That'll take us two hours, which is pretty good,

384. I'm going to say. For a period as well, it's pretty good.

385. Needs a lot of people on the top of their game.

386. And then we've also got to build in breakfast for everyone

387. in that as well. Very important.

388. So, we do build that time in.

389. Hold on. Did someone mention breakfast?

390. Basically what happens is you have to feed all the SAs

391. in half an hour. So there's always a bit of a hustle

392. to get everyone through as quick as possible.

393. Everyone has to wear bibs

394. so they can protect these lovely, lovely costumes.

395. Everyone's having a good time, aren't they, guys?

396. As you can see, we are very good at our jobs.

397. Whilst everyone's tucking in, I'd like to know

398. where all these supporting artists come from.

399. What will happen is we will get a script and it will say,

400. you know, we'll be in this time,

401. we'll need this amount of people.

402. We'll then go to the director and the director will say,

403. "I want," I don't know, "40 people in this, roughly..."

404. Yeah. .. and we'll talk to costume and make-up departments about,

405. you know, costume sizes. That's a really important thing...

406. Mm-hm. .. because a lot of these costumes aren't made here.

407. They're hired. And then they have to fit into those costumes. Yeah.

408. So that casting process goes out to

409. a bunch of agencies that we use. Yeah.

410. But there's also some street casting involved as well,

411. where we went out to lots of different dancing schools

412. and did lots of casting like that.

413. You've got jobbing supporting artists.

414. Some people use it as a job. Yeah. There are people that,

415. I've been casting people in the past on other productions

416. where I would literally spot them on the street and be like,

417. "Oh, my goodness, you're perfect"

418. and I'd just drop what I'm doing

419. and I would just run over to them

420. with a clipboard and a photograph

421. and take a photo of them. Wow.

422. 90% of the time, everyone's really kind of

423. intrigued and up for it.

424. Yeah. 10% of the time they think I'm some weirdo

425. coming up to them on the street.

426. From finding their photo from an agent or whatever,

427. or just meeting them in real life, to them being stood

428. on the set looking amazing in these costumes,

429. it's really satisfying. Yeah. That is cool.

430. With everyone fed and watered, it's time for one last check

431. before the action begins.

432. OK, dancers, we're going to go to set,

433. so grab your stuff and we'll be on our way.

434. But in an episode about cosplay,

435. what does it actually feel like

436. dressing up for a costume drama?

437. Carl and Katie, here you are in your regalia.

438. How comfortable is the get-up, Katie?

439. Not so comfortable.

440. I'm wearing two corsets.

441. Well, you look fabulous, so it's OK.

442. There's one built in the dress

443. and you need the extra for this region... Yeah? Wow.

444. .. for the extra vavoom.

445. For the, for the, for the Regency look, shall we say? Yes.

446. Yeah. How about you, Carl? How are you finding it? You look fantastic.

447. I think most of the costume is very comfortable,

448. apart from the shoes can be

449. a bit draining after a whole day

450. of running around, walking around... Yeah.

451. ..in the same shoes.

452. Guys, we're about to send them up to set.

455. There we are. There's wrangling in action

457. Nice one. We're stepping on with the dancers.

458. Thanks, gang. Into our positions, friends.

460. It's more than just making sure

461. they're in the right place at the right time.

462. You're feeding those notes from the director.

463. Yes. So, we're the assistant directors,

464. so our job is to dress it, which is where we place

465. all the extras and supporting artists where they need to be,

466. and then we go for rehearsal

467. and then the director will say something like,

468. "Oh, can you tweak them? Can you build up their performance?"

469. or, "Can you dial it back?" Yeah.

470. We're running around essentially choreographing the extras,

471. so we try and get the best performances out of them as well.

472. And sometimes that's explaining to them in a big room of people

473. and we go, "Right, this is what's going to happen today.

474. "You need to do this and that."

475. But then when we get them on set, there's a lot more

476. precision involved because

477. we're kind of looking at what the camera is seeing. Yeah.

478. Standing by to rehearse, then.

479. So we then will go down to them and be like,

480. "Can you be a bit more sad?

481. "Can you find some tears or something?" Yeah.

482. That's quite a challenge.

483. And playback.

484. By the stroke of midday, Mikey and his team have managed

485. to get everyone in costume

486. and in position for the cameras to start rolling.

487. I'm quite happy with what we've done on this episode.

488. I think everyone looks really good. Yeah.

489. Pulling off. This is wonderful work.

490. Down the years, the Whoniverse has brought us

491. all manner of bothersome beasts.

492. And in this episode, the Doctor came face to beak

493. with a particularly foul race

494. of cosplaying feathered foes - the Chuldur.

495. What? By the Lord!

496. I've got quite a history on Doctor Who of using animals.

497. I've done rhinos and we've had cats, we've had pigs,

498. and here come the birds.

499. Here come the beautiful birds at their most flamboyant.

500. Attention, s'il vous plait!

501. Right at the very beginning I said,

502. "Do you know what we haven't done?

503. "We haven't done human beings in alien prosthetics

504. "walking around saying, "I will kill you, Doctor."

505. And so that's, I said, "Please can we do that?"

506. And I just thought birds were a lovely chance.

507. The colours, the ceremony,

508. the show, the flamboyance.

509. Just the beauty of birds.

510. You think of birds with their feathers as quite showy,

511. and they're quite dress-up aliens,

512. so it kind of makes sense that they go from feathers

513. to full-on outfit.

514. That is such a Doctor Who sentence, isn't it?

515. "Birds. They just love fancy dress."

516. They do! Yeah. It makes perfect sense.

517. Birds love fancy dress. Course they do.

518. And also, this is a very rare opportunity,

519. it's my first chance on Doctor Who

520. where every member of an alien species looks different.

521. All the Chuldur birds look different to each other,

522. and I love that. It's a family of birds.

523. Mark up.

524. This flock of shapeshifting baddies

525. are led by the sinister Duchess of Pemberton,

526. played by Impossible

527. and Game of Thrones actor Indira Varma.

528. Me, I get to be Regency Duchess of Pemberton

529. and then I change into weird Chuldur Duchess of Pemberton,

530. who then, they reveal their true selves

531. and they become these alien birds.

532. No! Find them!

533. And then when they become birds, it's just chaos.

534. And that was really fun.

535. But before the fun begins, how much time is spent

536. in the prosthetics chair?

537. Oh, not long. Just maybe

538. three and a half to four hours.

539. And then about 45 minutes to take it all off.

540. And don't I look fabulous?

541. So how are these cluckers brought to life?

542. Each bird has two technicians with them -

543. a make-up artist and an assistant for each of them,

544. which means we have 12 people,

545. as well as myself today.

546. It's gone from, you know,

547. digital sculpting to practical sculpting,

548. taking inspiration from birds of prey.

549. So many things were thought of, including the colour

550. of the birds' hands, you know, for the claws,

551. for it to have little, little gloves on.

552. And should they be the same colour,

553. should they kind of be similar

554. to the birds that we're trying to replicate?

555. Yeah, yeah. And a mammoth amount of feathers, no doubt.

556. Oh, my God, we're covered in feathers.

557. The workshop's like a giant nest right now.

558. It's absolutely bonkers.

559. I don't like it when people ask me

560. about what it feels like to be in it,

561. because it makes me think about it.

562. No, it's actually OK

563. because it's glued on to my skin.

564. There's no space in between

565. my skin and it to start getting itchy.

566. Well, it is quite disconcerting

567. speaking to you when you look like this.

568. Mm. Meant to.

569. Yeah. How does it feel?

570. And you've got the hands on as well. The hands are strange.

571. Yeah. Um, the hands...

572. Yeah. It's, look, it feels,

573. it's not the most comfortable feeling. Yeah.

574. Oh, Ruby Sunday.

575. I want to be you.

576. It's been great. It's been very funny.

577. You forget that you have it on sometimes.

578. I'll be walking around and, like,

579. people give you weird looks.

580. It actually keeps you warm.

581. Does it? Like, when it's on.

585. That's always so much fun to, as an actor, to play a villain

586. and explore that, that side of humanity.

606. round the neck. Dead giveaway. Yep. Straight away.

607. I'm going to go under your shirt now

608. and just measure what's called your natural waist.

609. So that's straight around... I've actually got

610. a suit fitting for a mate's wedding coming up.

611. What was my chest? Just so I can make a note.

612. It's 41. 41. OK, good.

613. Next up, arm length.

614. I think I've got quite short arms.

615. No... No, they're normal?

616. Absolutely an average length of arms.

617. Average. Hello.

618. And then outside leg.

619. So I'm going to go from,

620. let's go from where the breeches will probably sit,

621. which is there. And I'm going to go down to the knee,

622. which is there, just to check that we can get the right length. Yeah.

623. I'm really interested in the idea

624. this is more than just sticking clothes on people.

625. Mm-hm. It's about creating characters.

626. Exactly. And you can see I've got

627. three quite different looks here that I've pulled out.

628. Yeah. So this might be a good first option to try. That's quite cool.

629. It's kind of flamboyant aristocrat.

630. I think you can pull that off.

631. I don't think there's any flamboyant aristocrats

632. from Glanamman, but there we are. Could be the first.

633. You wait till you get it on. You might feel very differently.

634. Yeah, we'll see.

635. What else do I need to complete the aristocratic look?

636. I love the thought that these were all the rage back then.

637. Yeah, it was all about showing the shapely leg.

638. Was it?

639. Is that why? Yeah.
